ABOUT THE POOLS FAQ’s - Annual Maintenance Why are the Pools shut down for Annual Maintenance The simple answer to this question is that the pools are shutdown in an effort to reduce the chances of an unexpected shutdown during regular operation of the facilities throughout the rest of the year and to keep the facilities in the best possible operating condition. Does this mean that there won’t be breakdowns outside of Annual Maintenance - unfortunately we cannot guarantee that there will be no equipment malfunctions the rest of the year as Fritz Sick, Nicholas Sheran and Stan Siwik pools are relatively old facilities. Annual Maintenance is the best way to minimize the chances of breakdowns. During shutdown all equipment that is critical to the operation of the pool is serviced such as pumps, filters and chlorination systems. The pools are drained and cleaned (painted in the case of Fritz Sick and Stan Siwik). Other repairs and general maintenance of the remainder of the facility are also completed. Annual Shutdowns are scheduled to have the least impact on programs such as lessons, swim clubs etc so dates are strategically placed between lesson sets. Having safe water & safe facilities (clean & sanitary) is critical to the operation of the pools as Alberta Health Services conducts stringent water tests and regular inspections of the facilities to ensure that they are safe for the public. Recreation Excellence’s role is to work with the City to ensure this happens. Routine maintenance along with Annual Shutdowns helps to ensure that we are complying with all AHS guidelines.

Battery Point and Immortal Flame Fifty years ago – in 1966 – two monuments were unveiled to honour Lethbridge’s soldiers – Battery Point Monument at Henderson Park and the Immortal Flame (Eternal Flame) at Mountain View Cemetery.

The Immortal Flame was lit on 27 December 1966. It was created as a joint partnership of the General Stewart Branch of the Royal Canadian Legion; the Lethbridge branch of the Army, Navy and Air Force Veterans; and the City of Lethbridge. The Flame was a Diamond Jubilee project celebrating the 60th

anniversary of the incorporation of the City. More than 200 people were at the lighting of the flame. Bill Kergan MC’ed the event and General Stewart lit the flame.

The Battery Point Monument was unveiled in June 1966 by First World War veterans Dave Gill and George Sylvester. The memorial is near where the 25th Battery planted trees in memory of their comrades who died in World War One.

Once again, Interfaith Food Bank, Lethbridge Food Bank and Salvation Army will join forces to ensure that less fortunate members of our community get everything they need for a Merry Christmas. Because we share clientele, we will work together to serve over 2200 households this Christmas, making the most of our resources and eliminating the duplication of services. Community Services

Because everyone deserves a Merry Christmas…

Christmas Hampers: We are collecting supplies for our regular monthly food allotments and Christmas Meals, which include turkey/ham and all the fixings. You can contribute by donating the supplies necessary for building hampers, or by offering a cash donation - $150 will cover supplies for a medium family, $200 will take care of a large family.

Adopt-A-Family Program: Choose to adopt a family this Christmas, and do their shopping for them! Donors contact

Interfaith Food Bank to be matched with a family, then purchase all necessary supplies and drop off the bundle of cheer at Interfaith for us to distribute. For those who choose to shop – please contact Interfaith for a list of items to include with your bundle. For those who do not have time to shop – we will do the work for you; simply make a donation designated for one of the following: Family of 2 - $150; Family of 3-4 - $200; Family of 5-6 - $250; Family of 7-8 - $300

Under the Tree Toy & Gift Program: Put a tree up in your office, church, school or business and encourage others to

bring food, toys, goodies, or stocking stuffers for children 17 years and under. No room for a tree? We will provide you with a decorative bin to collect items on behalf of Interfaith Food Bank, and will even pick it up when it is full. Please do not wrap gifts, and we would like to have bins returned between December 5-9th. Encourage others to be a “Secret Santa” for families in need. For more ideas of how you can help to address hunger and poverty in our community, visit www.interfaithfoodbank.ca, or contact our office by calling 403-320-8779.

Christmas Bird Count Did you know?  

  

  

Conservation was in its beginning stages around that era, and many observers and scientists were becoming concerned about declining bird populations. Beginning on Christmas Day 1900, ornithologist Frank M. Chapman, an early officer in the then nascent Audubon Society, proposed a new holiday tradition – a “Christmas Bird Census” – that would count birds during the holidays rather than hunt them. So began the Christmas Bird Count.” Source: www.audubon.org/conservation/science/christmas-bird-count

Explore our events calendar for a list of upcoming speakers and field trips at www.NatureLethbridge.ca

This year the Lethbridge Christmas Bird Count will be Sunday, December 18th Are you interested in taking part in the Christmas Bird Count?

More information can be found on the Audubon or Bird Studies Canada websites or you can contact the Lethbridge CBC Compiler: Ken Orich korich@telusplanet.net (403) 381-2351

Did You Know?

“Prior to the turn of the 20th century, people engaged in a holiday tradition known as the Christmas “Side Hunt”: They would choose sides and go afield with their guns; whoever brought in the biggest pile of feathered (and furred) quarry won.

This year is the 117th annual Christmas Bird Count. Each count takes place in the same established 15-mile (24km) wide diameter circle every year. Every CBC is done by willing and dedicated volunteers. CBCs are a critical part of Citizen Science. Data provided helps researchers, biologists and wildlife agencies to study the long-term health and status of bird populations across North America. Lethbridge CBC averages 42 different species per count with 49 species counted in 2015. 20,882 Canada Geese were counted in 2015. Mallards, Pigeons, Magpies, Chickadees, Starlings, Bohemian Waxwings, House Finches and House Sparrows are some of the most frequent birds counted.

Wellness over the holidays Although the holidays are supposed to be relaxing and filled with love and joy, we often forget to take a step back and just relax. To make sure you take some time to focus on your own personal health and wellness this season, the Be Fit for Life Centre is challenging you to focus on completing 12 days of wellness this month. Over the next 12 days, we challenge you to complete one positive task from each of the following four categories: Nutrition, Kindness, Mental Health, and Exercise. Here are some ideas for each category: Nutrition: Eat a full breakfast, try a smoothie, drink eight glasses of water, or eat three servings of veggies. Kindness: Donate blood, volunteer, call a friend, send a thoughtful message, or make someone laugh. Mental Health: Read a book for 30 minutes, say three positive things, go for a massage, have supper with an old friend, take 30 minutes to yourself, or take five minutes of self-reflection. Exercise: Do 15 minutes of stretching, try a new fitness class, do ten burpees or hold a plank for one minute.

Happy holidays from the Be Fit For Life center!

For more information call 403-382-6919 or go to lethbridgecollege.ca/befitforlife

As much as we love spoiling our friends and family, we cannot forgot about ourselves. We hope that you take few minutes over the holidays to focus on your own wellness and reconnect with yourself.
