ABOUT THE POOLS What is happening at our pools this season? The Recreation Excellence leadership team is excited to present to you exciting improvements for the new year. The Stan Siwik Family Leisure Pool, Nicholas Sheran Family Leisure Pool, Fritz Sick Pool, and Henderson Outdoor Pool are community treasures that serve the people of Lethbridge and Southern Alberta. Our team is committed to providing the community our best customer service, clean and safe facilities and activities geared towards all ages. What are the improved programs? • U18 Rec Swim - A swim time geared towards youth! It’s the perfect opportunity to swim, socialize, and have fun in the water with your friends. Everyone is welcome! • Sensory Swim - Inclusive approach to activities that recognizes and caters to the specific sensory needs of individuals. • Swim & Splash - Family play time in the tots pool for toddlers and preschoolers! What do you offer for fit and jog classes? What can I do during leisure swim? Nicholas Sheran offers a total of 9 weekly aqua fit classes, ensuring you stay active and fit, while Stan Siwik provides 8 weekly aqua jog classes, for those looking to exercise in the deeper end of the pool. Fritz Sick offers a wide array of classes from aqua jog and aqua fit to aqua Zumba and senior aqua fit. What is leisure swim, you ask? It’s a time for you to swim at your own comfortable and leisurely pace. It’s also an excellent way to get a gentle form of exercise. Float, tread water, or swim as slow or as fast as you like – it’s all about relaxation and enjoyment. Can I rent the facility for an event? You certainly can! We offer private facility rentals at a great price, available outside of our normal hours of operation.

Community & Family Support Services Aquatics

Do you offer any other courses aside from swimming lessons? We sure do! Stan Siwik and Fritz Sick Pool offer Canadian Swim Patrol. The Canadian Swim Patrol program consists of Rookie Patrol, Ranger Patrol, and Star Patrol. Structured the same as a swimming lesson, these courses are an excellent introductory to lifeguard knowledge and skills.

4

Stan Siwik also offers in-house courses whether you’re looking to register or recertify, we’ve got you covered. Mark your calendars for November 14th as our lesson and advanced course registration will be open at 9:00am! Our mission is to make sure our community is up to date on Alberta’s Health and Safety Standards. The Alberta Occupational Health and Safety Code has undergone changes in its Part 11 (standard first aid) section, effective from March 31, 2023. Standard First Aid is Intermediate First Aid, the new names are in line with the CSA Standard Z1210-17 23. The changes were made to ensure that the names of the courses are consistent with the national standard. How can I find out more information? Our website RecEx.ca/Lethbridge has detailed information on programming, schedules, fees and frequently asked questions you might find helpful. The building was quickly put into use. In June 1924, the building hosted “distinguished Chinese visitors” Chu Yook, Tom Yu and Paul S. Yen, who were visiting the local branch, while on a fundraising tour for a large headquarters in Shanghai.

Over its 100 years, this two-story brick and wood frame building has been used for a wide variety of activities including housing, banquets, meeting space, providing rooms for Chinese language schools and a great deal more.

In October 1924, the local organization hosted the district convention of the Chinese Masons. For the convention, the local club hosted representatives from 60 clubs from across Canada. The photograph shows members of the Chinese Free Masons posed in front of this building in 1924.

“A very elaborate tea was served through the afternoon, with the ladies presented with button-holes and the men with cigars. The hall was decorated with streamers, Chinese lanterns, etc.” (13 Oct 1924, Lethbridge Herald)

Theatre Outré Theatre Outré is unusual, unexpected, startling, subversive, bizarre, bold, extravagant, and evocative. Theatre Outré creates, produces, and presents theatre that is queer in either form or subject, an alternative to what is offered in the mainstream. They strive to entertain and provoke audiences by combining new works or reimagining classical canonical plays through an Outré lens. Programming and operations are motivated by the following guiding principles: providing an uncensored, uplifting, and uncompromising voice to those in our community who are often considered to exist beyond the fringes of social propriety, sexual norms and gendered expectations. The goal is to make a concerted effort to employ Queer (2SLGBTQIA+) artists, artists who choose to live, work or study in the Lethbridge area, and Albertan artists. They strive to make their work and the artists that they hire known to communities outside of Lethbridge through tours and other forms of inter-community outreach. Theatre Outré is a leading outlet for alternative and Queer theatre in Alberta and the producer of the hugely successful Quaint, Quirky & QUEER Cabaret & Festival.

The scholarship provides financial support to a student pursuing study in the field of Theatre Production Design and Management and/or Media Production and Design at a recognized Canadian post-secondary educational institution. Application is open to Canadian students who were born, raised or are presently residing in the geographic area from the County of Warner, west to the British Columbian border and Vulcan County south of the United States border. Deadline: March 31 For more information and applications visit our website.

STRANGE/FAMILIAR archival photo provided by Theatre Outré

Over the past decade, Theatre Outré has valued the development of new Queer stories and produced several world-premiere original works including 333 by Jay Whitehead, Like Orpheus by Brett Dahl, How to Leave and Strange/Familiar by Liam Monaghan, Where the Two-Spirit Lives by Marshall Vielle and has co-produced productions with Theatre BSMT, New West Theatre, DaPoPo Theatre, and is a frequent feature at the International Dublin Gay Theatre. Liam Monaghan was also the recipient of the Alberta Playwrights Network Sharon Pollock Prize for the most outstanding unproduced play by an Alberta writer for his play Strange/Familiar, which Outré premiered this June. Although this has been a tremendous year of transitions, letting go of their venue, Didi’s PlauHaus and bringing on two exciting new team members, Brett Dahl as Artistic Director and Brent Clarke as the new General Manager - Theatre Outré, has still been busy. You can see the exhibit Acting Out: Celebrating Local Queer Theatre History at the Galt Museum until mid-February. As well as the return of Quaint, Quirky, and QUEER Festival and Cabaret this spring! Stay tuned for news of the premier of the Like Orpheus short film, which the company has been developing for the past two years, based on the award-winning hit play of the same name. Theatre Outré also produces a series of Queer Improv (or Queer-Prov) shows through ImpromptOu at Good Times Comedy Bar.

Survival Strategy - Hibernation Did You Know?

During hibernation, the heart rates and breathing slow down, and the body temperature drops. Animals that are true hibernators wake up every few weeks to pass waste and eat.

True hibernation only occurs in relatively small mammals, the largest mammal to hibernate, in Canada, is the marmot. Hibernation requires internal energy reserves in the form of adipose tissue and hibernators typically feed intensively before winter, building up their fat stores.

Squirrels don’t hibernate, as they can’t build up enough body fat. In winter, they sleep up to 20 hours/day and only go out in the early morning or late afternoon to snack.

Helen Schuler Nature Centre Winter Hours:

In North America, a species of wood frog can survive being frozen and thawed several times a season due to a unique natural substance in their blood.

Hibernation is a way for certain wildlife to survive cold and dark winters without having to forage for food or migrate to warmer locations. Instead, their metabolism is turned down to save energy.

PLAY FOR LIFE

A Playbook to get every kid in the game. The Aspen Institute Project Play created a document, Sport For All, Play for life. A Playbook to get every kid in the game. The Aspen Institute wants all children to have the opportunity to be active through sports. As part of this goal, the suggested model is for every child to be physically literate by age 12.

1. Ask kids what they want! 9 out of 10 children say “fun” is the main reason they participate in sports 2. Reintroduce free play Let kids play on their own terms and they will 3. Encourage sport sampling More options mean more kids will find a sport they like 4. Revitalize in-town leagues Children need a better pathway in sports than ‘up or out’ 5. Think small Fields of dreams are great- but innovate and they will come 6. Design for development Kids need a new measure of success: personal improvement 7. Train all coaches A good coach sees the potential in every child 8. Emphasize prevention Better equipping coaches to prevent injury may help keep kids safer and ease parents’ concerns In the full report, the Aspen Institute provides ideas for each of these strategies whether you are a National Sport Organization, community recreation group, pediatrician, school or parent! Scan with a smartphone to see the sport for all resources.

THIS INFORMATION IS AN EXCERPT FROM A RESOURCE ON THE LETHBRIDGE SPORT COUNCIL WEBSITE BASED ON INFORMATION FROM TGE ASPEN INSTITUTE (ASPENINSTITUTE.ORG) The Aspen Institute is a global nonprofit organization committed to realizing a free, just, and equitable society. Founded in 1949, the Institute drives change through dialogue, leadership, and action to help solve the most important challenges facing the United States and the world.

The mission of the Lethbridge Sport Council is to provide leadership and a collective voice for sport in Lethbridge.

Community Did you know? & Family Support Services

*** START TIMES CANNOT BE REQUESTED AS TIMES WILL ROTATE THROUGHOUT THE SEASON *** Sessions will be scheduled during the Victoria Day long weekend (Monday evening)

*** Days, Start times & locations are subject to change and are provided as a guideline only. Season to start on Monday April 22, 2024 and be complete by Saturday June 22, 2024*** U4-U6 Timbits: An introduction to soccer. All sessions ran by LSA Staff Coaches, with activities based around players exploring the soccer ball and getting comfortable with an invasion sport. Some small sided scrimmages may be played, but this environment is purely about the players gaining their first touches of a soccer ball.

U7-9 Fundamental: Individual development is paramount by building a love of the ball. Sessions will challenge players creative side as well introduce them to skills needed in the game such as dribbling, passing and shooting. Scrimmages will be played, but no scores will be kept, and all players will be asked to experience all positions of a soccer match (goalkeeper, defender, midfielder, striker). U11-13 Learning The Game: This age is classed as ‘The Golden Age Of Learning’ where skills learnt in the earlier stages are now enhanced as well as an introduction to the tactical side of the game. Scrimmages will be played and although scores will be kept during the game, coaches and players are asked to keep games meaningful, competitive and to avoid blowouts at all costs. There will be no league standings. U15-U18 Excel In The Game: Utilizing the technical understanding and tactical skills learnt in the previous three phases to excel in the game. Like the previous 'Learning the Game' phase, coaches are asked to avoid blowouts and keep games competitive throughout.

Before going skating, visit lethbridge.ca/ lakeice for current ice conditions!

Community Did you know? & Family Support Services

Lethbridge has four designated skating areas: Henderson Lake, Nicholas Sheran Lake and Legacy Park (Northwest Pond and East Pond) The ice conditions are checked at least once a week and updated online. Ice fishing is not permitted in designated skating areas or storm ponds. It is dangerous to walk, play or skate on storm ponds. Although the pond may look frozen, the ice may not be safe. Water levels can fluctuate, causing air pockets under the ice.
