Welcome to the January 2022 Recreation & Culture Guide

A Message from Mayor Blaine Hyggen

Welcome to 2022, Lethbridge! I truly hope everyone made it through 2021 with some renewed optimism leading into this coming year. I am excited for our residents to participate in their favourite activities – or to find new ones. Either way, the Recreation and Culture Guide is the perfect destination to find out what is available in City of Lethbridge facilities. This Guide will help you explore information on events, programs, clubs, leagues, teams and classes that will be taking place in January and beyond. Unsurprisingly, after what I hope was a great holiday time for everyone, there always seems to be a January rush on fitness. Please be patient during this time as others may have different goals than yourself. I am personally excited to continue physical activities this year as I find it to be a great and direct way to assist with my mental health, as well. The two go hand-in-hand and it can’t be overstated how important both are towards reaching your overall health goals. After the success of the Mayor’s Community Hockey Challenge in December, I also look forward to creating some new ‘Mayor’s Challenge’ initiatives this year. Stay tuned! Happy New Year, Lethbridge! Let’s make 2022 one to remember. Be healthy and be happy. Mayor Blaine Hyggen

Happy 100 th to the Lethbridge Public Library Building/SAAG building In January 1922, the Lethbridge Public Library building in Galt Gardens was opened to the public. The city chose not to have a formal ceremony for the opening of the new building.

located on the main floor was the “librarians enclosure with desk.” The children’s room of the library was in the basement. In addition to children’s books, the area also had a children’s lecture room. This room was also available for small public meetings. In the basement was also a workroom where books were repaired. When built, the library had book cases to accommodate approximately 12,500 volumes. There was also a case of magazines and a newspaper rack. In the 1950s, an expansion was constructed onto the original building and the building served as the location of the Public Library until 1974.

The Lethbridge Daily Herald did take the opportunity to share a description of the interior of the new building. The west side of the main floor was reserved for adults and was divided into reading and reference departments. Also

Today the building, with another recent expansion, serves as the home of the Southern Alberta Art Gallery.

Fierce & Elusive – The Wolverine Front

Back

Did You Know?

Photo: Castanet.net

The wolverine (Gulo gulo) is a powerful animal that resembles a small bear but is actually the largest member of the Mustelidae (weasel) family.

Anatomically, the wolverine is a stocky and muscular animal. With short legs, broad and rounded head, small eyes and short rounded ears. Though its legs are short, its large, fivetoed paws and plantigrade posture facilitate movement through deep snow.

Did You Know?

Wolverines have thick, dark, oily fur, which is highly hydrophobic, making them resistant to frost.

They are solitary creatures that need a lot of room to roam and may travel 24 kilometres (15 miles) in a day in search of food. A male wolverine will range over an area of between 600 - 1000 km2.

The wolverine’s poor eyesight is compensated by their excellent senses of hearing and smell. The latter one allows it to detect a carcass lying 6 meters (20 feet) under the snow.

Furthermore, this species possesses special upper molars in the back of their mouth that are rotated 90 degrees inward, allowing them to tear apart the flesh of their prey quickly.

Winter Walking Keep or Start a Walking Program this Winter While hibernation may seem to be the natural response to snow, cooler temperatures and less daylight, walking is still a great activity to embrace this winter! Dress Right - Good footwear that grips, a windproof jacket, long underwear, mittens, scarf, toque or a buff will help keep you comfortable. Be Visible - Bright colours, clothing with reflective strips or even a small light will help keep you visible to traffic, especially if you're out past dark. Add some poles - Try a pair of walking poles - you can borrow some from the library with your library card. Not only will they help you with balance, they enhance the benefits from your walk! Try some Snowshoes - Also available to borrow from the library, give them a try when the snow gets deep. Make Walking an Adventure - Look for tracks in the snow around Helen Schuler Nature Centre or take in your neighbourhood Christmas lights. JUST KEEP MOVING to enjoy a host of health benefits for mind, body and spirit!
