ABOUT THE POOLS What is happening at our pools this season? The Recreation Excellence leadership team is excited to present to you exciting improvements for the new year. The Stan Siwik Family Leisure Pool, Nicholas Sheran Family Leisure Pool, Fritz Sick Pool, and Henderson Outdoor Pool are community treasures that serve the people of Lethbridge and Southern Alberta. Our team is committed to providing the community our best customer service, clean and safe facilities and activities geared towards all ages. What are the improved programs? •
U18 Rec Swim - A swim time geared towards youth! It’s the perfect opportunity to swim, socialize, and have fun in the water with your friends. Everyone is welcome!
•
Sensory Swim - Inclusive approach to activities that recognizes and caters to the specific sensory needs of individuals.
•
Swim & Splash - Family play time in the tots pool for toddlers and preschoolers!
What do you offer for fit and jog classes? What can I do during leisure swim? Nicholas Sheran offers a total of 9 weekly aqua fit classes, ensuring you stay active and fit, while Stan Siwik provides 8 weekly aqua jog classes, for those looking to exercise in the deeper end of the pool. Fritz Sick offers a wide array of classes from aqua jog and aqua fit to aqua Zumba and senior aqua fit. What is leisure swim, you ask? It’s a time for you to swim at your own comfortable and leisurely pace. It’s also an excellent way to get a gentle form of exercise. Float, tread water, or swim as slow or as fast as you like – it’s all about relaxation and enjoyment. Can I rent the facility for an event? You certainly can! We offer private facility rentals at a great price, available outside of our normal hours of operation.
Community & Family Support Services Aquatics
Do you offer any other courses aside from swimming lessons? We sure do! Stan Siwik and Fritz Sick Pool offer Canadian Swim Patrol. The Canadian Swim Patrol program consists of Rookie Patrol, Ranger Patrol, and Star Patrol. Structured the same as a swimming lesson, these courses are an excellent introductory to lifeguard knowledge and skills.

Stan Siwik also offers in-house courses whether you’re looking to register or recertify, we’ve got you covered. Mark your calendars for November 14th as our lesson and advanced course registration will be open at 9:00am! Our mission is to make sure our community is up to date on Alberta’s Health and Safety Standards. The Alberta Occupational Health and Safety Code has undergone changes in its Part 11 (standard first aid) section, effective from March 31, 2023. Standard First Aid is Intermediate First Aid, the new names are in line with the CSA Standard Z1210-17 23. The changes were made to ensure that the names of the courses are consistent with the national standard. How can I find out more information? Our website RecEx.ca/Lethbridge has detailed information on programming, schedules, fees and frequently asked questions you might find helpful. Unveiling of High Level Bridge Cairn, 1949 On 10 January 1949, 75 years ago, the cairn near the High Level Bridge was unveiled.
The cairn still exists, though it has been moved south of the bridge.
The cairn was constructed by the Lethbridge Junior Chamber of Commerce.
It reads: “Rising 307 feet from the valley floor this bridge over which runs the Canadian Pacific Railway through the Crows Nest Pass spans the valley in one mile and forty seven feet. Completed in 1909 it is the longest highest bridge of its type in the world.”
It was unveiled by John Ivan MacKay of Winnipeg, the Canadian Pacific Railway’s general manager for the prairie region, and Dr. D.A. Rylands, president of the Lethbridge Junior Chamber of Commerce.
Community Did you know? & Family Support Services
The Junior Chamber of Commerce erected the cairn to mark the High Level Bridge (which was 40 years old when the cairn was placed) and included information on the bridge, such as its length and height.

arts feature Casa Artist in Residence (AiR) Program The Casa Artist in Residence (AiR) program has been growing steadily over the last ten years with the program’s inception coinciding with the building’s opening. The residency program provides an opportunity for artists from many different disciplines to pursue their practice in a supportive, concentrated, community-based atmosphere. Being open to artists with diverse experience levels, backgrounds and a variety of media including those in or recently graduated from undergraduate programs allows for an inclusive variety of artists working in the building. Workshops, installations, open houses, and artist talks are part of AiR community engagement element of the program. These opportunities allow for the community to engage meaningfully with artists and are generally free or low to remove barriers to participation.

Her work will meld together family history and stories from her mother and grandmother and the surroundings of southern Alberta. Kitagawa will give an Artist Talk at the Bunka Centre at Nikka Yuko Japanese Garden on January 24 at 7:00pm. Entry to the Artist Talk is free. You can also visit Kitagawa in the studio for an Open House on January 27 from 7:00pm to 9:00pm during the opening night of The Gallery at Casa’s January Exhibitions. What is a Bufflehead? Photo: Sandy Paiement
Did You Know?
Photo: Jim Moodie
Photo: Larry Cusick
They are one of six species of cavity-nesting ducks in Alberta. Buffleheads have evolved their small size to fit in the nesting cavity of their "metabiotic" host, a woodpecker or the northern flicker. Due to their small size, they are highly active, undertaking dives almost continuously. They are capable of diving to depths of up to 30 feet to forage for food. Helen Schuler Nature Centre Winter Hours:
Open Daily 1:00pm – 4:00pm
Buffleheads have a distinctive vocalization; they don't sound like the usual "quack quack quack“ duck. Their vocabulary consists mostly of throaty "grrks", squeaky whistles, chattering, and guttural "cuk cuk cuks". The name "bufflehead" is derived from "buffalo-head", for the male’s distinct and puffy head shape. Buffleheads stand out as one of the few monogamous duck species globally.

RACISM IN SPORT
What Coaches Can Do About Racial Discrimination
As a coach, there are several ways to address racism in sport. Four ways coaches can address racism is: 1. Raise awareness. To raise widespread awareness, coaches must educate themselves and be willing to share their knowledge and perspectives with all stakeholders 2. Offer support. Offer emotional and social support by letting participants know they aren't alone and that you support their decisions. Truly supporting your participants means advocating for them and acting on their behalf. 3. Challenge the status quo. Each sport has certain official criteria and policies as well as informal or unwritten rules. These rules may put some racialized participants at a disadvantage in competition. Talk with other coaches and administrators about how to make changes. 4. Question the system. Challenge the system by respectfully responding those who may be acting on individual, racialized biases, or unwritten rules. Help them understand that the ideals upon which criteria are based were created when there were few racialized participants, coaches or judges in the sport. Emphasize that changes will create more inclusive sporting environments. Scan with a smartphone to see the sport for all resources.
The resource goes on to include 4 ways coaches can address their own biases and be open to learning, and 6 reasons why it is important to include antiracism policies within your organizations current policies.
THIS INFORMATION IS AN EXCERPT FROM A RESOURCE ON THE LETHBRIDGE SPORT COUNCIL WEBSITE BASED ON INFORMATION FROM ANTI-RACISM IN SPORT (ANTIRACISMINSPORT.CA) The Anti-Racism in Sport Call to Action Accord was developed from the findings of the Exploring Experiences of Racism and Anti-Racism in Sport in Winnipeg Research Project, The mission of the Lethbridge Sport Council is to provide leadership and a collective voice for sport in Lethbridge.
Community Did you know? & Family Support Services
Everyone has a role to play in making sport anti-racist. There are tools, resources, and supports to address racism in sport. Anti-racism in Sport is a campaign which seeks to increase, promote, and engage in discussions on anti-racism in sport.
