Recreation & Culture Guide Coordinated by the City of Lethbridge, Recreation & Culture Department Printed in Canada
Welcome to the July 2016 Recreation & Culture Guide Thank goodness the days get longer in the summer. It gives us a chance to pack in all the fun things there are to see and do. This year promises to be a particularly exciting summer season with big events and new facilities. Lethbridge will welcome hundreds of participants, families and friends to what is shaping up to be an amazing Southern Alberta Summer Games, July 6 - 9. This grassroots community event has loads of activities and volunteer opportunities for all ages. Come out and cheer on the competitors! I know many of us have been anxiously awaiting the reopening of Henderson Pool. This will no doubt be a premier summer attraction for residents and visitors. I can’t think of a better way to make the most of a hot summer day than by enjoying our amazing new water park. Jump in and have fun! Our Canada Day celebrations, Dragon Boat Festival, Heritage Days and of course Whoop-up Days are all great family fun highlights throughout the summer months. Before the kids head back to school, Lethbridge will welcome the world to watch amazing cyclists tackle a tough course through our city. Plan to bring the family out to watch as the Tour of Alberta comes to town.

ABOUT THE POOLS FAQ’s - Prevention of Pool Contaminations
What is Contamination and why is the pool closed?
Contamination can be blood, feces or vomit. AHS has regulations regarding these contaminations that we follow in order to keep our clients as safe as possible from illness. Patrons are asked to leave the contaminated body of water and to shower before entering another body of water so that it is not contaminated as well. The length of time a pool is closed depends on a variety of factors but can be from 30min to more than 12hrs.
What is the cost of a contamination?
The obvious cost is lost time for swimming to all patrons. On average the pools see 40+ contaminations each year which results in over a week’s worth of lost time in the pool. Other costs include chemicals, loss of income to staff and lost revenue.
How can we help to reduce the chance of a contamination?
There are several ways to help reduce the chances - Do not eat before or during your swim. Plan to eat after. - Go to the bathroom before your swim and take frequent bathroom breaks during the swim - Babys and toddlers who are not completely potty trained and individuals suffering from incontinence must wear a “Swim” diaper. Additionally at Henderson Outdoor Pool this year a plastic pool pant must also be worn over the Swim diaper. These are available for purchase at reception. - Do Not come to the pool if you are ill or suffering from diarrhea. Please wait 2 weeks after symptoms subside before returning to the pool We would like to keep the pools open as much as possible so please help us by following these guidelines. Here’s to a great summer!

Henderson Golf Course
In 1916 plans were developed for a municipal golf course at Henderson Park. In July 1916 a committee was created to make final arrangements for a golf course south of Henderson Lake. The plans were for a 9-hole course initially and to later expand it to 18-holes. One of the reasons the golf course was planned was that it was felt that a city without a public golf course could not be considered fully modern and that a public golf course was necessary in order to ensure that the sport was accessible to all. By August 1916 the course was ready for use. By the spring of 1917, plans were under way to more create a more formal group to operate and maintain the course. The
Municipal Golf Club was formed in March 1917. Member of Parliament (later Senator) William Buchanan and Mayor Hardie were named Honourary Presidents of the club and S.J. Shepherd was first president. Membership was $5 for the season with women’s membership at $3. The club was renamed Lethbridge Golf Club in 1925 and then Henderson Lake Golf Club in 1961. The photograph shows golfing at Henderson Lake Golf Course on New Year’s Day 1917.

Epic Art Film Camp is an opportunity for youth to build filmmaking fundamentals. In this camp, students experience every step of filmmaking from start to finish. Students develop a concept, write a script, create sets and costumes, perform, and shoot a film. They also learn how to edit and add basic visual effects. This film experience is student-driven, developing skills students can apply to other filmmaking projects.
Art In Motion explores how the world around us influences contemporary art. Using a wide array of media, campers will have the opportunity to paint, photograph, draw, sculpt, and explore other forms of 2D and 3D art making techniques. SAAG’s downtown park setting provides a perfect opportunity to get outside and visit other cultural institutions in Lethbridge. The Rotary Centennial Fountain in Galt Gardens will be a fun diversion at lunch breaks!

Each day we will have snack time in addition to some fun in the sun at the Rotary Centennial Fountain.
Register your young ones in the popular Coulees & Culture camp this summer! Campers have the opportunity to learn, play and grow as they spend a day with these participating institutions: Galt Museum & Archives, Helen Schuler Nature Centre, New West Theatre, Fort Whoop-Up, and Southern Alberta Art Gallery. Campers will participate in activities inspired by theatre, art, nature, local history and everything in between as they are introduced to Lethbridge’s varied cultural resources.

arts in lethbridge arts feature South Country Fair What began as a camping weekend for several local folk clubs in 1986 and intended for organizers to get to know each other better, has morphed into an annual 3-day event. The organizers are still trying to get to know one another, but The Fair seems to be doing quite well. The mission of South Country Fair has always been to expand cultural horizons in Southern Alberta by giving residents the opportunity to experience a diversity of music, spoken word, media art and performance art in the context of a three-day, camping-style, old-world, outdoor, folk music festival. South Country Fair feels a lot like coming home to many regular attendees and is an integral part of the summer arts festivals. An event not to be missed, the 30th edition of SCF is July 15, 16, and 17 in the Fish and Game Park in Fort Macleod. For information and tickets, please visit southcountryfair.com or call 403-388-4414.

Stonefly Nymph Did you know?
As water flows over rocks, a protective boundary layer, about 1-4 mm thick, is formed where the velocity of the current falls dramatically. Water molecules do not slide at a constant speed over the substrate at the bottom of the river. They are slowed down from frictional forces. Depending on the type of substrate, the vertical difference between the two flow speeds (known as the boundary layer) may be thinner or thicker. A flattened body shape (like that of a stonefly nymph shown above and in the video on display at the Helen Schuler Nature Centre) allows an aquatic insect to live in this boundary layer and not be carried away by the current. The space behind the rock (downstream) will have eddies and back flows that slow the current. Small particles carried in the current are dropped in this area making a perfect spot for macro-invertebrates to feed. Sources: Helen Schuler Nature Centre River Valley exhibit guidelines

Stoneflies are an indicator species. Their presence indicates healthy water!
They live along the bottom of the river on rocky, stone or gravely substrate.
Stonefly larvae have sharp claws that allow them to hold to and crawl on the bottom of fast flowing streams.
Their flattened body shape helps them to stay in place with current.
There are many different species of stoneflies. Some are carnivorous, most are omnivores. As herbivores or detritivores, stoneflies become an important link in the food chain. As they say, these little aquatic insects are the conversion factor! They take plant material and turn it into fish (when they get eaten!)

Risky Play - Is it Worth the Risk? As a parent, we naturally want to protect our children and prevent them from becoming injured. When it comes to playing outdoors, however, does being too protective actually hinder a child's development and increase their risk of injury and disease as they age? We need to continue to love and protect our children, but it is also important to give them space and allow them to take age-appropriate risks while engaging in active outdoor play. This means allowing children to run fast, climb high, play rough and explore alone. You'll find that children are actually pretty good judges of what their bodies can and cannot physically do. Letting them explore these boundaries for themselves will teach them to recognize, evaluate and manage risk as they grow and develop. Risky play is essential to healthy child development and helps develop physical literacy too, which will lead to a longer, healthier and happier life.

Did You Know?
As an adult, you need to decide what an age appropriate risk is for your child. Naturally, you wouldn’t let a two year-old child play outside alone, but you could let them crawl up on a log if they are inclined to. Once you have decided on this, your next step is backwards! Step back and let your child explore and interact with their environment. Expect some bumps and bruises along the way. It’s all part of the process and is worth the risk for long term health!
