ABOUT THE POOLS - NEW CHANGES

Our top priority is to provide a safe and enjoyable experience at our facilities. Safety is paramount when it comes to pools and waterslides, and taking necessary precautions can greatly minimize the chances of accidents and injuries. This summer, our Recreation Excellence leadership team aims to emphasize the importance of implementing proper safety measures, waterslide rules, preventing contamination, and following facility policies.

Water slides add a huge element of fun to swimming pools, but to ensure the good times last, safety must always be the first consideration. In accordance with the manufacturer rules and best practices the waterslides are ONE RIDER SLIDES, the slider must be 42 inches tall and able to ride in a supine position.

Why am I not allowed to ride double with my child on the waterslide?

The force and speed of a double rider can cause riders to be ejected from the slide or lose control during the ride and collide with each other. The increased speed may make it more difficult to control movements and react to unexpected situations, leading to injuries and accidents.

In the event of an emergency or if one rider becomes distressed or disoriented during the ride, the presence of a second rider can complicate the situation. It may be challenging to provide immediate assistance or evacuate both riders safely, potentially delaying rescue efforts and increasing the risk of further harm.

We appreciate your understanding as we make great efforts to ensure all guests enjoy a safe ride on the waterslides.

Can I use the Splash Pad area with my kids?

The slides are for children 10 years of age and younger. Parents are more than welcome to assist their children on the splash pad structure; however, parents are not permitted to ride down the slide on the splash pad structure.

What is a safety check?

Staff will inspect the pool basin for hazards and contamination. Safety checks are conducted at 3:30pm and 6:30pm and require everyone to come out of the water and stay behind the “yellow line” for 10 – 15 minutes. We recommend taking this time to hydrate, re-apply sunscreen, or use the washroom.

What is a bag check?

Our facility strictly enforces policies and rules, such as bag checks, to maintain a secure environment for all visitors. Conducting bag checks at entry helps prevent prohibited and restricted items from entering the premises, to ensure our guests have a safe and fun overall experience.

Why can’t I go swimming right after eating food?

We advise you to wait at least 15 – 20 minutes after eating before you enter the pool. This allows your body to properly digest food and prevent fecal and vomit contaminations. By following these guidelines, we can collectively maintain a clean and healthy swimming environment for everyone to enjoy.

How can I find out more information?

You are welcome to send us an email at leth@recreationexcellence.com or contact our facility for any further questions you may have.

Dempsey Gibbons Fight in Shelby, 1923

On 4 July 1923, Shelby, Montana, hosted the world-title boxing match between Jack Dempsey and Tommy Gibbons.

Shelby had great hopes and expectations for the fight believing the match would bring riches and pres tige to the community. A 40,000 -seat arena was constructed and thousands were expected to come to Shelby from across North America. When the fight was finally called in the 15th round, the event was a financial disaster for Shelby.

How was Lethbridge involved in the event?

In the 5 July 1923, Lethbridge Daily Herald , C.F. Steele shared some of the ways southern Alberta was involved, with musical entertainment, beer, and more:

“Alberta was numerously represented at the Glorious Fourth spree at Shelby. The southern ranges contributed most of the horses and cattle for Ray Knight’s rodeo. Joe Healy and his Blood Indians led the natives in the street parade and Alberta beer struggled through

the long hot hours of Wednesday to keep the throats of the crowd wet….

Attractions come and go, but the Kilties go on forever. The Lethbridge Pipe Band was the hit of the day pulling the attention of weary sightseers when everything else failed to get the faintest trace of a smile. The Lethbridge band was a knockout, but it is a crying shame that this city sent them to the centre of the sporting world without a tag or a sign indicating that they hailed form Lethbridge. ”

Steele also noted that Art Baalim was seen at numerous locations in Shelby during the event. This wasn’t surprising as “A.G. Ba alim had control of the fight tickets for all of western Canada.” (7 September 2002, Lethbridge Herald )

Several southern Albertans made their way to Shelby to view the fight and shared memories of it over the years.

Oh, and in case you were wondering, Dempsey won the fight and retained his title.

Suitcases for Kids

Children and teens can be faced with quickly packing up their precious belongings when having to move to a different home into foster care Whatever the reason, this process can be traumatic. A suitcase can be an essential item that can restore dignity and hope You can help these children sort through their feelings and provide a little security.

Newcomer Girls Club Base Camp for Newcomer Children

For many newcomer youth, settling into a new place comes with significant challenges, especially for our newcomer girls. It is crucial that these youth develop confidence and a positive sense of identity

We provide a free, safe space where newcomer girls can feel nurtured and mentored, and be encouraged to be active members of their communities.

We want to help each young person successfully connect with their community

We provide an immersive and engaging environment where newcomer children develop and maintain English skills through a variety of fun activities, arts and crafts, and sports.

Meet The Cedar Waxwing

Cedar Waxwings ( Bombycilla cedrorum) are sleek, masked birds with unusual red, waxy deposits at the tips of their secondary feathers. They are cinnamon-coloured, with grayish wings and tails and yellow terminal tail-bands and got their names from their fascination for cedar fruits.

Cedar Waxwings have a lisping cry when feeding in flocks. They have two common calls: a high -pitched, trilled bzeeeee and a sighing whistle.

They are one of the few North American birds that specialize in eating fruit.

Cedar Waxwings eat in shifts. One group will eat first and then moves out of the way for the next group. This is very polite behaviour compared to most birds. Sometimes they can become drunk from eating fermented berries.

As social birds, a group of them is known as "ear-full" or "museum".

Cedar Waxwings are quick fliers and can fly at a speed of 40 km/h.

BE FIT FOR LIFE Take Time to Stretch

Enjoy a Whole Range of Benefits from Just Stretching

We all have some tight spots on our body - maybe it's our hamstrings, hips, upper back or shoulders. The fact is that our daily lives rarely promote good mobility - we simply sit and slouch too much!

Taking a little time to stretch brings a host of benefits including improved mobility, better posture, reduced muslce and joint pain, reduced headaches and stress, and improved breathing and blood flow.

Here are some ideas for incorporating some stretching into daily life:

- Take a walk and get your whole body moving: Swing your arms, do shoulder circles, lean your ear towards your shoulder, hug each knee to your tummy, kick your legs out straight or exaggerate twisting at your waist as you walk.

- Join a yoga or tai chi class. There are offerings around Lethbrdige Parks this summer. Check out the Interfaith Food Bank, Nordbridge Seniors or Nikka Yuko Garden websites for more info.

For more information, call 403-382-6919 or go to lethbridgecollege.ca/befitforlife

- Simply stretch - focus on the backs of your legs, the fronts of your hips and opening up through the front of your shoulders and chest. Try to hold your stretches for 30 seconds and keep them comfortable! Did You Know?

Fun Outdoor Games for Kids

No Equipment Needed

This article from Active for Life includes many favourite no-equipment outdoor games for kids. This list includes traditional games, fun variations on old-time favourites, and some new activities. Whether you’re looking for outdoor games for a big group or just a few, this list is a great go-to guide for fun active outdoor games that you can set up on the spur of the moment, no gear or equipment necessary! There are 9 different 'tag' games, running games, and several options for toddlers and preschoolers We picked 'The Captain is Coming' as a classic favourite to remind you of, and share the rules and commands so you could play too.

The Captain is Coming

This game starts by designating one player as “the Captain.” This player is captain of the ship and will shout out commands that the other players must follow. The last player to do the command is eliminated from the game until only one player remains. Before starting the game, use real or imaginary markers to designate the different sides of the ship: front (bow), back (stern), left side (port) and right side (starboard). Make sure all the players know the names and directions of the sides of the ship, as well as what the other commands mean It helps to do a couple practice runs. It’s also a good idea to start with a handful of commands and add more commands to increase the complexity of the game

Bow: Run to the front of the ship

Stern: Run to the back of the ship

Port: Run to the left side of the ship

Starboard: Run to the right side of the ship

Captain’s coming: Run to the captain and salute

Hit the deck: Lie on the ground.

Scrub the deck: Pretend to scrub the ground

Climb the rigging: Pretend to climb a rope.

Dig for treasure: Pretend to dig

Cannonballs: Crouch down and cover your ears.

Submarine: Lay on back and stick up one leg

Three men in a lifeboat: Three players stand together and pretend to row a boat.

People in Sport A R S E N S T E B L E T S K Y I

Hello, I am Arsen Stebletskyi. I am a Ukrainian who has moved with my family to Canada to start rebuilding our life.

I started working out when I was 7. I was inspired by my father, who does not know life without sports After 5 years of wrestling in my hometown, I was invited to one of the strongest sections of wrestling in the western part of Ukraine. I was the youngest athlete training there. It was there that I acquired the skills of discipline and worked a lot on my wrestling abilities, and was very hard on myself.

After a difficult situation in Ukraine, my family and I had to move to Canada I am very happy with it. My new coach, Shawn Daye-Finley, has already given me a lot of advice both on and off the mat, and after that I started to enjoy wrestling even more. Every day I improve myself and do not use the word lazy in my life I am working full time for a landscaping company and coach wrestling when I am not training I see a future here through sport.

It’s important for sport to embody equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) to ensure all participants feel welcome, included and have equal access to sport. The People in Sport stories feature individuals in sport representing populations that have generally faced barriers to participation
