ABOUT THE POOLS What is happening at our pools this season? The Recreation Excellence leadership team is excited to present to you exciting improvements for the new year. The Stan Siwik Family Leisure Pool, Nicholas Sheran Family Leisure Pool, Fritz Sick Pool, and Henderson Outdoor Pool are community treasures that serve the people of Lethbridge and Southern Alberta. Our team is committed to providing the community our best customer service, clean and safe facilities and activities geared towards all ages. What are the improved programs? • U18 Rec Swim - A swim time geared towards youth! It’s the perfect opportunity to swim, socialize, and have fun in the water with your friends. Everyone is welcome! • Sensory Swim - Inclusive approach to activities that recognizes and caters to the specific sensory needs of individuals. • Swim & Splash - Family play time in the tots pool for toddlers and preschoolers! What do you offer for fit and jog classes? What can I do during leisure swim? Nicholas Sheran offers a total of 9 weekly aqua fit classes, ensuring you stay active and fit, while Stan Siwik provides 8 weekly aqua jog classes, for those looking to exercise in the deeper end of the pool. Fritz Sick offers a wide array of classes from aqua jog and aqua fit to aqua Zumba and senior aqua fit. What is leisure swim, you ask? It’s a time for you to swim at your own comfortable and leisurely pace. It’s also an excellent way to get a gentle form of exercise. Float, tread water, or swim as slow or as fast as you like – it’s all about relaxation and enjoyment. Can I rent the facility for an event? You certainly can! We offer private facility rentals at a great price, available outside of our normal hours of operation. Do you offer any other courses aside from swimming lessons? We sure do! Stan Siwik and Fritz Sick Pool offer Canadian Swim Patrol. The Canadian Swim Patrol program consists of Rookie Patrol, Ranger Patrol, and Star Patrol. Structured the same as a swimming lesson, these courses are an excellent introductory to lifeguard knowledge and skills. Stan Siwik also offers in-house courses whether you’re looking to register or recertify, we’ve got you covered. Mark your calendars for November 14th as our lesson and advanced course registration will be open at 9:00am!

Our mission is to make sure our community is up to date on Alberta’s Health and Safety Standards. The Alberta Occupational Health and Safety Code has undergone changes in its Part 11 (standard first aid) section, effective from March 31, 2023. Standard First Aid is Intermediate First Aid, the new names are in line with the CSA Standard Z1210-17 23. The changes were made to ensure that the names of the courses are consistent with the national standard.

Equity, Diversity and Inclusion How Does Improving EDI Make Sport Better?

ViaSport British Columbia is working to create a more inclusive sport culture in BC. They work to raise awareness around inclusion in sport and disseminate effective practices. As part of their initiatives and campaigns, they highlight how improving Equity, Diversity and Inclusion makes sport better! EDI Encourages Participation When teams and organizations embrace diversity and inclusion, it encourages people from different backgrounds to participate. This can increase engagement and membership in your sport. EDI Promotes Fairness Environments that are fair and address barriers to participation help eliminate discrimination and biases that can impact experience in sport. Equitable practices can bolster access to facilities, equipment and training across different sports. EDI Builds Community Diversity in sport fosters understanding, respect, and unity that transcends the playing field. EDI Enhances Teamwork and Innovation Diversity and inclusion boost innovation, problem solving, and the overall sporting experience through a broader range of perspectives, skills and ideas. EDI Promotes Role Models Sport organizations that promote EDI create role models suited for a variety of backgrounds. This inspires members of equitydeserving groups to participate. Develop a EDI Policy Establish Diverse Leadership Provide EDI Training Foster Inclusive Communication Provide accessible facilities and resources Lead by example Develop a data collection strategy Engage with equity-deserving groups

PEOPLE IN SPORT Braeson Schacher

Braeson Schacher is a 28 year old personal trainer, cross fitter and adaptive athlete. He has been in adaptive sports for about 8 years now, following a bilateral below-knee amputation, and is still finding new avenues to explore. He participates in many adaptive sports but is fortunate enough to compete in and represent Canada on the National Adaptive Waterski team. He recently competed in his first worlds this past September at Sacramento California. He has also entered and placed in the top 10 worldwide in the multi extremity division in the CrossFit open and will continue training hard and pushing himself. This past year, Braeson was named the recipient of the 2023 WSWC (Water Ski and Wakeboard Canada) Male Adaptive Development Athlete of the Year. The point is not necessarily to do cross fit or be a power lifter. The point is to get moving and to enjoy movement and to find out what we are capable of physically. So if you love it and you progressed at it, awesome, but if that wasn’t your avenue, that doesn’t mean that there isn’t some other type of activity you might enjoy. It’s important for sport to embody equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) to ensure all participants feel welcome, included and have equal access to sport. The People in Sport stories feature individuals in sport representing populations that have generally faced barriers to participation.

All sessions ran by LSA Staff Coaches, with activities based around players exploring the soccer ball and getting comfortable with an invasion sport. Some small sided scrimmages may be played, but this environment is purely about the players gaining their first touches of a soccer ball.

Recreation

U7-9 Fundamental: Individual development is paramount by building a love of the ball. Sessions will challenge players creative side as well introduce them to skills needed in the game such as dribbling, passing and shooting. Scrimmages will be played, but no scores will be kept, and all players will be asked to experience all positions of a soccer match (goalkeeper, defender, midfielder, striker).

38

U11-13 Learning The Game: This age is classed as ‘The Golden Age Of Learning’ where skills learnt in the earlier stages are now enhanced as well as an introduction to the tactical side of the game. Scrimmages will be played and although scores will be kept during the game, coaches and players are asked to keep games meaningful, competitive and to avoid blowouts at all costs. There will be no league standings. U15-U18 Excel In The Game: Utilizing the technical understanding and tactical skills learnt in the previous three phases to excel in the game. Like the previous 'Learning the Game' phase, coaches are asked to avoid blowouts and keep games competitive throughout.
