ABOUT THE POOLS FAQ’s - Can You Change the Hours of Operation Hours of Operation Recreation Excellence is very pleased to work with the City of Lethbridge in the delivery of aquatic services within the community of Lethbridge. On occasion our staff get asked if the facilities hours of operation could be adjusted. In particular, we do get asked if the facilities could open earlier on some days. While we are not opposed to adjusting operational schedules it should be noted that the City of Lethbridge has and does place a lot of effort into researching facility use and the schedules that exist within the Aquatic Centres in Lethbridge have been developed in an effort to best reflect the needs of the community. It is our mandate to operate the Aquatic Facilities in a way that provides as much flexibility as possible while remaining fiscally responsible to the City of Lethbridge and the tax payers of the community. This does not mean that the hours of operation cannot be reviewed from time to time - in fact they are reviewed regularly... and it does not mean that we do not want to hear suggestions regarding the programming and hours of operation because we do. Our goal is to serve well in all aspects of the operation of the facilities and to maintain fiscal responsibility to the community of Lethbridge in doing so.

Time Air Fifty years ago, history was made when Stubb Ross’s Time Air began. On 16 May 1966, the Lethbridge Herald shared: “Inaugural Trip Carries Press, Lethbridge Air Service Begins Twice-Daily Flights.” The inaugural flight had five passengers and was held one month after approvals for the new company were given. The time gave the company the opportunity to purchase a new airplane and make booking and office arrangements.

in 1991, the Lethbridge Herald noted that “From the meagre beginnings of one plane and three employees, Time Air is a success story and not a pipe-dream of a man who flew with his head in the clouds.” At that time, the company had personnel of 1400 and a fleet of 25 aircraft.

In May 1966 there were two departures daily from Lethbridge at 7:10 am and 5:00 pm and two departures from Calgary at 8:20 am and 6:10 pm. The flight was 45 minutes long and the first flight was in a Beechcraft Model 18. In 1969 the company was renamed Time Airways Ltd. By late 1970 Time Air was flying not only to Calgary but also to Edmonton, Medicine Hat and Red Deer. A few years later service was expanded to Grande Prairie.

Stubb Ross did not live to see his legacy. He retired in 1984 and passed away in 1987. Stubb Ross Road at the airport is named in his honour; he was also named Lethbridge’s Honourary Citizen of the Year in 1986 and is represented on the Eventually Time Air amalgamated with masonry sculpture outside Lethbridge PWA Corp though Time Air operated as a City Hall. separate entity. Pronghorn Antelope Did you know?     

   

Pronghorn Antelope are indigenous to interior western and central North America. They stand 81-104 cm (32-41in.) high at the shoulder and weigh 40-65 kg (88-143 lb). Females are the same height as males, but weigh a bit less. Their body temperature is 38°C (100°F).

Did You Know?

Pronghorn favor arid grasslands, grassy brushlands and semidesert regions. Their primary food is sagebrush and forbs. Pronghorns form mixed-sex herds during winter months. In early spring the herds break up. Females group together, young males form bachelor groups and mature males become solitary.

32

Pronghorn breed in mid-September. They have a gestation period of 7-8 months, longer than typical North American ungulates. Pronghorns give birth in mid to late May. They usually have their fawns within a few days of each other. Birthing at the same time may ensure chances for survival of the fawns as predators can’t be everywhere at once. Twin fawns are common. Sources: aep.alberta.ca/ & en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pronghorn

Explore our events calendar for a list of upcoming speakers and field trips at www.NatureLethbridge.ca

Pronghorns date back over 20 million years ago. It is the only surviving member of the family Antilocapridae. The Pronghorn’s closest living relatives are giraffes. Pronghorns are not true antelope. True antelope have permanent, unbranched horns. Horns of the pronghorn are branched, or pronged. The outer sheath, or horn, is composed mainly of hair and shed every year. Pronghorns have very large eyes with a 320° field of vision. Pronghorns are the fastest land mammal in the Western Hemisphere. They can hit speeds of 88 km/h and can run 56km/h for 6 km. A Pronghorn’s lifespan is usually up to 10 years, rarely 15 years. South eastern Alberta is the northern limit of their North American range.

What is physical literacy and where did it go? Although physical literacy has many definitions, we like to describe it as “the ability to move with confidence and competence in a wide variety of activities and environments.” For a young child, being physically literate is often just as important as reading and writing. So why aren’t our children playing and developing these skills as frequently anymore? There are many reasons, but a huge factor is screen time. Technology has taken a huge toll on unstructured free play in our children. Just under seven percent of Canadian youth achieve the recommended guideline of 60 minutes of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity per day, at least six days a week. So how can we change this mentality and get our children moving and playing? First, we need to encourage them to get outside and play. Second, we should start joining in their play, especially if there are no other kids around for them to play with. And lastly, we shouldn't force them to play structured games. Let kids have fun playing traditional games, and encourage them to come up with their own twist on the rules. Need ideas? Here are a few games we love to play:
