100 Years of the Poppy as the Flower of Remembrance On 5 July 1921, the Great War Veterans Association (a forerunner of the Legion) adopted the poppy as the flower of remembrance. Lethbridgians were informed in September that they should wear a red poppy on Armistice Day in Memory of Fallen Heroes. It was noted that buying and wearing a poppy would accomplish several worthy objectives. Internationally, funds went to support French war orphans and widows, while in Lethbridge money was used to support family members of those who had died during the war. The poppy was to be worn to show that the brave deeds of those who had served in the war had not been forgotten.

The tradition of wearing a poppy on Remembrance Day continues to this day and it continues to honour those who served and especially those who died for their country. Money raised through the sale of poppies is still used to support veterans and veterans causes. This year, on the 100th anniversary of the poppy being chosen as the flower of remembrance, purchase and wear a poppy and continue the long legacy of honouring those who have served.

The poppies sold in Lethbridge in 1921 were made by widows and orphans in France and were sold through the IODE (Imperial Order Daughters of the Empire).

arts in lethbridge arts feature Lethbridge Symphony Orchestra The Lethbridge Symphony Orchestra (LSO) began in 1961 with Albert Rodnunsky as its first conductor. By 1972, professional violinist Norbert Boehm was hired; he is beginning his 48th season with the LSO in 2021, having anchored the orchestra as concertmaster since 1976. In 1978, a core of resident professional string players formed Musaeus, the LSO’s resident string quartet, supported by then Music Director Stewart Grant. The LSO’s current Music Director, Glenn Klassen, was appointed in 2003 and is leading the LSO into its 60th season. The symphony has survived venue moves, changes of personnel, challenging financial times, branding evolutions, and now a global pandemic, to remain the welcoming and inclusive organization whose concerts continue to evoke joy, stimulate growth, and promote learning. This year’s concerts include guest artists Iliana Matos on guitar, Adam Mason on marimba, Bradley Parker on piano, Vox Musica, the Chinook Chamber Singers, Neil Cockburn (playing Southminster Church’s Casavant organ which is over 100 years old), Ronelle Schaufele (viola)

and Nigel Boehm (cello) – and yes, Nigel is Norbert’s son, carrying on the family tradition of making music. Musaeus will play two special family concerts in partnership with the Galt Museum in October and March. The LSO’s eagerly-anticipated annual fundraising gala, Love Notes, is slated for mid-February 2022. Ticket holders will be treated to a lovely evening in the Lethbridge Signature Sandman ball room, enjoying a wonderful dinner catered by Prime Catering while celebrating 60 years of classical orchestral music. That evening the LSO will be playing tunes harking back to the 1960’s when it all began. Bring your dancing shoes; the “Swingin’ 60s” fundraising gala will be an event you won’t want to miss. What’s happening next you ask? To find out, sign up for the LSO’s newsletter by sending an email to hello@lethbridgesymphony.org , check out the LSO’s website lethbridgesymphony.org or call the office at (403) 328-6808. Get ready to enjoy a first-class orchestra producing memorable musical experiences for audiences of all ages. Come for the music – stay for the experiences.

The White-tailed Deer

Photo: albertafarmexpress.ca

Photo: wildlifeprojectgc.weebly.com

The White-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) is a great jumper and runner. It can reach speeds of up to 58 km/h. Like a cow, the deer's stomach has four compartments. This allows food to be processed more efficiently and can feed on things that other mammals cannot process.

The life span of a Whitetailed deer can be up to 14 years in captivity. In the wild, their life span is about 4 or 5 years. Predators and the harsh elements of nature play a role in this. The opposite of dogs, White-tailed deer only wag Nature Lethbridge on Instagram

their tails when they are startled. The raising of its tail vertically is called flagging. In addition to sending a warning, flagging also helps other members of the herd locate each other.

For more information:

Deer have perfectly healthy vision and hearing, but they rely mainly on their sense of smell for protection. They can smell you coming from (quite literally) miles away.

The proper term for deer being most active at dawn and dusk is called crepuscular. The only time this will change is if the temperature drops into the single digits or lower. Then, the prime active hours will be midday.

Connect with our Land New Coulee Plant Walk Highlights Blackfoot History The land where Lethbridge College sits has been home to the Blackfoot people for thousands of years, providing sustenance and spiritual connections for generations. Now, those who walk the coulees surrounding the college’s campus can learn about the importance of the plants native to the area, with the creation of the Iissksiniip (Coming to Know and Learn) Coulee Walk. The walk begins on the west side of the Lethbridge College campus, behind the Cullen Residence buildings, and tours around the top of the coulees, exploring traditional plants found in the area, their uses and shares some of the traditional creation stories of the Siksikaitsitapi, the Blackfoot Confederacy. While enjoying the beautiful views and fresh air, you're invited to consider your own place on these traditional lands and to reflect on how shared connections with the plants that grow and waters that flow upon it can bring people together in the spirit of reconciliation.

KEY BENEFITS OF PARKS AND OPEN SPACE IN LETHBRIDGE

“Our kids need parks”

The International Play Association states that, “play is fundamental to all aspects of child development and is a key component in preserving community and culture, in the broadest sense.”

Did You Know?

While all residents benefit from the availability of quality park spaces, a significant amount of attention has been focused on the benefits that result from children and youth being able to play and interact in outdoor settings.

50

Children who play regularly in natural environments show more advanced motor fitness, including coordination, balance and agility, and they are sick less often. They show improved cognitive development by their awareness, reasoning and observational skills. Children who play outdoors in green space often score higher on tests of concentration and self-discipline. The greener, the better the scores. Outdoor environments are also important to children’s development of independence and autonomy. For references and more information please visit: https://www.lethbridge.ca/parkbenefits
