Lethbridge’s Early TV History As of this November, the people of Lethbridge have been enjoying TV for 60 years. The CJLH-TV station opened on 20 November 1955.
The station was a CBC affiliate and 2/3 of its programming was from the networks. However, the shows had to be delivered via kinescope and was seen in Lethbridge a few days, or even a week, after they had originated in Toronto, Montreal, Vancouver or the US.
The station, broadcast on Channel 7 and with Norman Botterill as General Manager, was the only signal available at the time. The tower for the station was at that time at the far north of Lethbridge. The call letters provide clues as to who was behind the new station. The CJ was for CJOC radio; the LH for Lethbridge Herald. One-third of the programming was local programs. Local programming covered the news, weather and sports. There was also the “Remember When” program hosted by Harry Baalim which used slides, photographs, artifacts and guests to help tell local history. Through many changes, the channel continues today as Global TV.

The Lethbridge Scottish Country Dance Club was formed in 1981. Unlike Highland Dancing, Scottish Country Dancing is social dancing not solo dancing. A Scottish Country Dance involves 3 or 4 couples forming a set. Dancers are opposite their partner and beside other couples, so that all couples rotate through the different positions in the set. It is enjoyed all over the world not just in Scotland. Come and dance to the music of Scotland at Casa in the ATB Community Room, November 3, 10 and 17 from 7:00-9:00 PM. $25 for 3 sessions. Joining Forces Again for Christmas www. ChristmasHope.ca Once again, Interfaith Food Bank, Lethbridge Food Bank and Salvation Army will join forces to ensure that less fortunate members of our community get everything they need for a Merry Christmas. Because we share clientele, we will work together to serve over 1700 households this Christmas, making the most of our resources and eliminating the duplication of services. This year we expect to assist as many as 2500 adults and 1700 children. Christmas Hampers - Christmas Hampers will be standardized and will include day to day food and holiday goodies, regardless of which agency clients access. Visit our joint website, www.ChristmasHope.ca for our wishlist items. Food and Toy Collections and Fund-raising— Each agency will be required to recruit support from within the community to come up with all of the supplies and resources required for this joint project. Donors can contribute at any location and we will arrange for proper distribution. Please note: While we are working together on this Christmas Project, we still have requirements to meet on an individual organization basis. Food and Cash donations should be made to your charity of choice.

Fall Flights Did you know? Over the centuries, people have come up with interesting names for flocks of different types of birds. A flock of geese, for instance, is called a “skein” when in flight and a “gaggle” when on the ground. Similarly, a group of mallards is referred to as a “sord” when in flight and a “brace” when on the water. Here are some other interesting group names for birds: Snow Geese migration in November at Tyrell Lake

Migration is the long distance movement of animals

between two areas. It usually occurs during different seasons of the year and is primarily triggered by food availability. Here in Lethbridge our most well known migrants are birds.
30
No maps? No Roads? No problem! Instinct, landmarks, stars, and the sun, are all used by birds as navigation aids. The master mechanism of migration however, is thought to be the use of magnetic fields. Crystals of magnetite in the heads of some birds act like a built-in compass enabling orientation without any visual clues!
