St. Patrick’s Cemetery One hundred and thirty years ago, St. Patrick’s Cemetery, on 6 Avenue North, had its start. In December 1886, Frank Greer, who died of consumption (Tuberculosis), was the first burial. There are many unmarked graves in St. Patrick’s. In 1961 a monument was placed to commemorate those buried prior to 1910 and who did not have headstones or markers. Frank Greer’s is one of the many unmarked graves in the cemetery.

There is also a monument to the miners killed in the Coalhurst Mine Disaster of 1935. Ten of the sixteen miners who lost their lives in the explosion are buried in St. Patrick’s. This monument was unveiled in 1937; money for the monument was raised through public subscriptions. A near identical monument is in Mountain View Cemetery where the other six miners are buried. While St. Patrick’s is operated as one cemetery, there are Catholic, Protestant and Chinese sections in the cemetery.

arts in lethbridge arts feature Chinook Woodturning Guild Members of the Chinook Woodturning Guild, based here in Lethbridge, are assisting in the international program, Beads of Courage by making individually turned wooden treasure boxes and lidded bowls. Beads of Courage is a program dedicated to children coping with serious illness by helping them to record, tell and own their story of courage through the use of beads. The Chinook Woodturning Guild creates and donates one-of-a-kind vessels that are given to these children as a special place to store their beads. As well as working with children’s charities, the Chinook Woodturning Guild provides educational opportunities, demonstrations, and camaraderie. They will be participating this month in the annual Christmas at Casa holiday market. Regular guild meetings are held on the third Thursday of the month at Casa at 7:00pm. If you are interested in joing the guild or learning more please visit chinookwoodturning.org for more information.

Snow Goose The Lethbridge Naturalists’ Society Join us to learn more about your natural world! Upcoming Events

Lethbridge is located along the central flyway—a major migration corridor for birds like snow geese. Every year we are fortunate to be able to experience the staging of snow geese heading south on their fall migration. “Watching

huge flocks of Snow Geese swirl down from the sky, amid a cacophony of honking, is a little like standing inside a snow globe. These loud, white-and-black geese can cover the ground in a snowy blanket as they eat their way across fallow cornfields or wetlands.” - AllAboutBirds.org Upon witnessing a mass of 100,000 or more snow geese it is not surprising to learn that snow geese are among the most abundant waterfowl on the continent! Groups of thousands of snow geese have already been spotted on lakes South of Lethbridge. Join us on our annual field trip to witness the snow geese migration or take a journey to see for yourself by visiting Tyrell Lake, Stirling Lake, or Chin Lake from mid-October to earlyNovember. Become a Better Hockey Player… Play More Soccer Hockey is not just a sport in Canada, it's a part of our culture. Many Canadian children aspire to be the next “great one” and parents support this dream by enrolling them in as as many hockey specific training programs as they can. Hockey has turned into a yearlong season, with summer training and conditioning camps often taking precedent over other activities and sports. Would you believe that playing less hockey and participating in other sports can have a greater effect on an athlete's performance and development? Although some sports like gymnastics require early specialization, most sports don’t. Before the age of 12, children should participate in a variety of different activities and sports. This helps them develop a wide range of fundamental movement skills that will help them become competent and confident movers, which can translate to lifelong physical activity participation. Most of today’s elite athletes did not specialize in their sports until after the age of 12!

For more information call 403-382-6919 or go to lethbridgecollege.ca/befitforlife

Did You Know?

The reality is a very small percentage of children will reach elite status within a sport. Exposing them to a variety of sports and activities will increase their chances of them finding activities they enjoy doing and can continue to enjoy throughout their lives. Learn more about Canada's Long Term Athlete Development Model by visiting www.canadiansportforlife.ca and encourage your child to try new things this winter!
