Welcome to the October 2015 RecreaƟon & Culture Guide As nature starts to put on her autumn show with the changing of the colours of the leaves, the air becomes crisper and winter coats make another appearance. Between enjoying Ɵme with family during Thanksgiving and celebraƟng “All Hallows’ Eve”, all signs point to the transiƟon from summer to fall. This transiƟon brings with it a wide variety of acƟviƟes and events which can be found in this month’s RecreaƟon & Culture Guide. Spanning the arts and culture to sporƟng events there is something for everyone. You can plan your month in advance and have something to look forward to! There are many talents in our great city. These talents are shared when people sign up for classes to learn something new, or share their own knowledge and skills with others. We are currently looking for Part Time Instructors to join our dynamic Instruction Team. Applicants must have a current Water Safety Instructor award and be available to work evenings and Satuday mornings. Aquatic Pass Program Choices Recreation Swim Pass - Passes are available for both 3 and 6 month terms - This pass includes admission to recreation swim programs only (Open Swim & Family Swim). - Valid locations include: Nicholas Sheran Pool, Stan Siwik Pool, Fritz Sick Pool, Henderson Pool & Westminster Pool. - This pass includes use of the weight room, hot tub and sauna ONLY during recreation swim programs. Fitness Advantage Swim Pass - Passes are available for both 3 and 6 month terms - This pass includes admission to all recreation swim programs (Open Swim & Family Swim) PLUS all fitness aquatic programs (AquaFit, AquaJog, Waterfit, Condition Swim and Lane Swim). - Valid locations include: Nicholas Sheran Pool, Stan Siwik Pool, Fritz Sick Pool, Henderson Pool, Westminster Pool & designated YWCA Fitness classes. - This pass includes ANYTIME use of the weight room, hot tub and sauna ONLY during regular facility hours at Nicholas Sheran and Stan Siwik Pools. - This pass includes fitness classes at the YWCA during scheduled public times (DOES NOT include Health Club privileges). - For a Family Fitness Advantage pass, all members must be able to participate fully in all aspects of the fitness activity and not require adult supervision. - This pass provides a 50% discount on daily (drop in) admission rates to the 1st Choice Savings Centre for Sport & Wellness at the U of L. Registrations can be made by phone or in person - neither method takes precedent over the other Registration is on a first come first served basis Participants may register in a maximum of two (2) classes/session Participants may waitlist in any class Preparing to Register If you do not have an account you will need the following: - Name & birth date of account holder (Adult) - Name & birth date of participants - Home address, phone # and postal code - Program level, session & time. - Course # and alternatives if first choice is full - Payment information incl 3 digit # on credit cards for phone registrations Fees Fees must be paid in full at the time of registration. Payment can be made by Cash, Debit, Visa, MasterCard, Rec Ex Gift Card and cheque. Please make cheques payable to Recreation Excellence. Post dated cheques will not be accepted. A $25 charge will be applied to all NSF cheques. Only Visa and MasterCard will be taken for phone registrations

- Withdrawals received more than ten (10) business days prior to the start of the lesson set or course will not be subject to a withdrawal fee. - Withdrawals made between three (3) and ten (10) business days prior to the lesson start date will be subject to a 10% withdrawal fee. The remaining balance may be left on your account for future use or a refund may be requested. Refunds of less than $5.00 will remain on the account. - You may withdraw and re-register into another program without penalty prior to three (3) business days before the lesson start date. - No refunds will be given if withdrawal is within three (3) business days of the lesson start date.

All transfers are subject to availability and may be made without penalty up to three (3) business days (Mon-Fri) prior to the lesson start date. Transfers made by Recreation Excellence will not incur a penalty. Any resulting increase in program fees due to the transfer must be paid by the customer at the time of transfer.

Medical / Relocation Withdrawals for medical / relocation reasons are permitted with no penalty prior to the lesson start date. Refunds for withdrawal after the lesson start date will result in a pro-rated refund or credit on account. Proof of medical / relocation must be provided within two (2) weeks of notification of withdrawal for refunds or credits to be issued.

Cancellations Programs with insufficient registration are subject to cancellation. Customers will be notified as soon as a decision regarding cancellation has been made. All efforts will be made to accomodate any registrants displaced by cancellations. A full refund or credit to account will be issued for courses cancelled by Recreation Excellence.

Visit Cards / Passes Passes are available in both 3 and 6 month terms. Passes are non-transferable which means others cannot use them. Refunds for passes are granted only for medical or relocation reasons. Proof of medical and proof of relocation must be provided in each case for a refund to be issued. All requests must be made before the pass expiry date. Refunds will be pro-rated for the unused portion of the pass. Passes are valid at all pools so extensions will not be granted for Annual Shutdowns. Visit cards are transferable and do not expire. They are non-refundable

Lost or Stolen Cards At the request of the card holder lost or stolen cards will be replaced. A $6.00 lost card fee will apply (does not include GST).

Recreation Excellence makes public safety its top priority in the facilities we operate. Due to the advances in technology along with the ease of which things can be posted on the internet the following policy is in place for the use of electronic recording equipment in the facilities we operate in order to protect the privacy of our patrons as much as possible. MEDIA Media personnel must have permission from the Assistant General Manager or General Manager to be in the facility. An agenda as to what they are filming or taking pictures of must be provided. All patrons / staff members must be made aware that filming / picture taking is occurring in the facility. In addition the media must receive permission from any patrons / staff members that they will be filming / taking pictures of (documentation required). The Facility Manager will be made aware that the media will be in the facility and staff members are not permitted to speak to the media on behalf of the facility or Recreation Excellence unless authorized to do so. PUBLIC The use of any type of electronic recording equipment, including but not limited to, cell phones, cameras, video recorders, tablets, computers etc. is strictly prohibited in any of the change rooms within the facility. Patrons must get permission to take pictures / video in the rest of the facility. The patron will be made aware that they can only take pictures / video of those who have provided consent. The patron will identify to staff those who they are filming and staff may verify with those patrons if necessary.

Soccer Soccer likely dates in Lethbridge from the 1880s. Michael Hoyland, who wrote a book called A Century of Soccer in Southern Alberta, wrote the “first known soccer games, or football as it was called, was in 1880 at Lethbridge, although the game may have arrived with the North West Mounted Police six years earlier.” While the date of 1880 is questionable (Lethbridge as a community wasn’t in existence in 1880), it suggests Lethbridge was one of the first communities in southern Alberta to play soccer.

Games were played in Galt Gardens and many people came to watch. Soccer remained very popular and there were numerous organized teams. Many of the teams were created along ethnic lines,

such as the Shamrocks and Sons of England teams. The 1930s saw the best known of all the soccer teams to come from Lethbridge – the Lethbridge Supinas. The Supinas, established in 1932 by North Lethbridge merchant Nick Supina, played at the Adams Park on 13 Street North. They played on a field of dirt and prairie grass; however, the stands held 500 people and were regularly full.

The Supinas won the Alberta championship in 1932, 1934 and 1935. The team was inducted into the Lethbridge Sports Hall of Fame.

Bats have had a long relationship with people. Bats have been characters in our stories and myths and ancient legends, often representing evil—a representation they do not deserve.

Fortunately a more understanding and appreciative view of bats emerged in recent years. Social attitudes towards these magnificent animals have improved now that we recognize:

Bats provide environmentally-friendly insect control; Bats play a critical role in pollinating a wide range of plant species; Bats are natural elements in many ecosystems and play an important role as predators of a variety of flying insects, many of which are pests for people, crops or forests;

In Alberta, it is illegal to molest, disturb, or destroy bat hibernacula between September 1 and April 30. While bats are not protected by law in the province, they are a true indicator of environmental health and play a number of key roles in natural ecosystems. Their presence should be encouraged. Interpretation of the returning sound waves (the echo) allows the bat to determine the distance, speed, direction, texture, and size of an object.

This system of echo-location is extremely precise and individual bats have a remarkable ability to identify their own signals and avoid confusion even when surrounded by thousands of other echo-locating bats.

Walk to School: learning through locomotion It’s October, and autumn is in full swing. The weather is cooling off, but that doesn’t mean we can’t get outside and enjoy some fresh air. October is International Walk to School Month (IWALK, 2013). As part of the Active and Safe Routes to School (ASRTS) program, IWALK is challenging students to embrace active transport and walk to school in October. In May of this year, the Active Healthy Kids Canada revealed its report card for physical activity for children and youth. Did they make the grade? Not even close. Canadian youth received a D grade for active transportation, and a D- for overall physical activity (Active Healthy Kids Canada, 2013). It is recommended that children and youth get 60 minutes of activity a day, and a brisk walk to school is a great way to get some of that time in. In a recent TEDx talk in Regina, Jennifer Keesmaat, the executive director for the City of Toronto pointed out that in 1969, only 12 per cent of the population was driven to school. Today, only 12 per cent of the population walks to school. She suggests that walking to school provides a rite of passage for children. In addition, they learn problem solving skills, learn to navigate their community and are more likely to be active throughout the day. There are also environmental benefits when children walk to school, and Walking to school allows children to become autonomous adults. Here are some Be Fit for Life approved tips for a successful commute: • Understand the rules of the road • Form a Walking School Bus, where a group of students is led by a designated adult. • Make the journey a little more fun and try a pedometer challenge. In accordance with City of Lethbridge Cemetery Bylaw 5004

FALL & WINTER Cemetery Hours - from October 1st to March 31st the cemetery gates will remain open between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m.



Flowers, funeral designs or floral pieces will be permitted on a grave the day of the burial and for a period of five calendar days.



No glass encased wreath or any stand, holder, vase, receptacle, jar, bottle or pot made of glass or other breakable material is allowed on any graves in the cemetery. This type of material creates a hazard for our mowing and snow removal crews and could cause serious injury.



In accordance with the Provincial Cemeteries Act, no person shall be in a cemetery during the hours of darkness.



The Cemetery Administrative Office is located in Mountain View Cemetery, 1210 Scenic Drive South. Open weekdays 8:00 a.m. to Noon and 1:00 to 4:30 p.m. Records for all four City Cemeteries are maintained at this location (Archmount, Mountain View, Royal View Memorial and St. Patrick’s).

Heart of Our City Activity Grant The Heart of Our City Activity Grant provides funds to Lethbridge organizations to host events that help to create an exciting and vibrant downtown, and to attract audiences to the Heart of Our City.

2016 Application Deadline: 30th of November at 4:30 pm

Projects are eligible for up to $10,000 annually but cannot be receiving funds from other City of Lethbridge sources.

Shinny Hockey

Beginner Skate: A slower-paced time for people to practice their skating basics. Skating aids are allowed during this skate. Helmets are recommended. Family Skate: A special time for parents and children (17 yrs. of age & under) to enjoy a skate together. Parent & Tot Skate: Free Fun time for parents & pre-school children to learn how to skate. Helmets are recommended. Public Skate: A skate open to everyone to enjoy. Senior Skate: A skate open for everyone 55 years and over.

Youth Shinny Hockey: For ages 5 to 15 years, shinny hockey is played with a sponge puck with no body contact and no slap shots. Play is on half ice and is coordinated by Ice Marshals. Players require a hockey stick, skates and a helmet. Adult Shinny Hockey: Informal hockey for adults is played with a hard puck with no body contact or slap shots. It is played on full ice and is self-supervised. Protective equipment is required. Senior Shinny Hockey: Senior shinny hockey is for adults 55 and over with no body contact and no slap shots. Protective equipment is required.

NOON HOUR AQUAFIT Enjoy a workout which is invigorating and refreshing, yet low impact. This class combines cardiovascular fitness and muscular strength to provide you with a fun water workout suitable for all ages and fitness levels.

MEDITATIVE YOGA Previous experience in at least 2 beginner yoga classes is recommended.

KAYAKING PRACTICE Drop-in for some water fun and practice your kayaking skills at your own leisure. Kayaks and paddles are provided.
