ABOUT THE POOLS - NEW CHANGES

Our top priority is to provide a safe and enjoyable experience at our facilities. Safety is paramount when it comes to pools and waterslides, and taking necessary precautions can greatly minimize the chances of accidents and injuries. This summer, our Recreation Excellence leadership team aims to emphasize the importance of implementing proper safety measures, waterslide rules, preventing contamination, and following facility policies.

Water slides add a huge element of fun to swimming pools, but to ensure the good times last, safety must always be the first consideration. In accordance with the manufacturer rules and best practices the waterslides are ONE RIDER SLIDES, the slider must be 42 inches tall and able to ride in a supine position.

Why am I not allowed to ride double with my child on the waterslide?

The force and speed of a double rider can cause riders to be ejected from the slide or lose control during the ride and collide with each other. The increased speed may make it more difficult to control movements and react to unexpected situations, leading to injuries and accidents.

In the event of an emergency or if one rider becomes distressed or disoriented during the ride, the presence of a second rider can complicate the situation. It may be challenging to provide immediate assistance or evacuate both riders safely, potentially delaying rescue efforts and increasing the risk of further harm.

We appreciate your understanding as we make great efforts to ensure all guests enjoy a safe ride on the waterslides.

Can I use the Splash Pad area with my kids?

The slides are for children 10 years of age and younger. Parents are more than welcome to assist their children on the splash pad structure; however, parents are not permitted to ride down the slide on the splash pad structure.

What is a safety check?

Staff will inspect the pool basin for hazards and contamination. Safety checks are conducted at 3:30pm and 6:30pm and require everyone to come out of the water and stay behind the “yellow line” for 10 – 15 minutes. We recommend taking this time to hydrate, re-apply sunscreen, or use the washroom.

What is a bag check?

Our facility strictly enforces policies and rules, such as bag checks, to maintain a secure environment for all visitors. Conducting bag checks at entry helps prevent prohibited and restricted items from entering the premises, to ensure our guests have a safe and fun overall experience.

Why can’t I go swimming right after eating food?

We advise you to wait at least 15 – 20 minutes after eating before you enter the pool. This allows your body to properly digest food and prevent fecal and vomit contaminations. By following these guidelines, we can collectively maintain a clean and healthy swimming environment for everyone to enjoy.

How can I find out more information?

You are welcome to send us an email at leth@recreationexcellence.com or contact our facility for any further questions you may have.

Allied Arts Council formed, 195 8

Happy 65 th to the Allied Arts Council.

The Allied Arts Council of Lethbridge was established in 1958 with the plan to encourage, coordinate and promote the arts in Lethbridge & area. The original executive was Dr. Van Christou (president), Ted Godwin (vice -president), Jessie Baalim (secretary) and David Howell (treasurer).

In 1983, on the 25 th anniversary of the council, the City of Lethbridge declared April 10 to 16, 1983, “Allied Arts Council Week”.

For the council’s 50th anniversary, the artwork titled Sphere of Social Consensus and Influence was unveiled on 7 Street South near the Council’s office. The piece, created by Carl Granzow, shared the names of the 16 founding organizations of the Allied Arts Council.

Waking Death: Art & Culture Event Series

Contemplations on death, impermanence, grief, and ghosts can deepen an understanding of our intertwined livingness. The Waking Death: Arts & Culture Event Series focuses on these evocative themes, bringing together artists, guest speakers, and audiences to re ect on our shared mortality while focusing on the unique resources and spaces that arts & culture can provide. Events will take place at Casa, Galt Museum, Southern Alberta Art Gallery, and ULethbridge throughout September 9 to October 28, 2023, and will be free and accessible to the public with generous support from the Canada Council of the Arts, City of Lethbridge, Allied Arts Council, Casa, and the University of Lethbridge.

The series is produced by a multidisciplinary trio of artists – Annie Martin, Shanell Papp, and Mia van Leeuwen. Through their combined interests and e orts, they have curated a program of events that represent a diverse and polyphonic range of re ections on the vast subject of death. They hope that the series will o er the Lethbridge community a space for creative, critical, and empowered re ections

The Waking Death group exhibition at Casa presents a range of perspectives and imaginings from local and national artists including David Garneau, Faye Heavyshield, Mary Kavanagh, Don Gill, Adrian Stimson, Bryce Singer, Shanell Papp, and Kasia Sosnowski. In addition, a series of events will feature lm screenings, knowledge sharing, and a line-up of performances that present a diverse range of voices and bodies, and will include o erings of ritual, play, celebration, and song attending to death, grief, and ghosts. Event highlights include a keynote address by Rebecca Many Grey Horses that will re ect on Blackfoot perspectives on death & dying, followed by a panel discussion (Sept 16).

A lm screening series featuring BioFilm Productions decadent display of decay in Wrought (Sept 20) and a performance series with new works by Adrian Stimson, Migueltzinta Solis, Mia van Leeuwen, and the Lethbridge premiere of Halifax-based new music vocalist and composer Janice Isabel Jackson who will perform the song cycle O Death (lyrics Annie Martin, music Janice Jackson) and her new mini-opera Penelope Ghost Walker (Oct 14). For a full list of events and participating artists and speakers please visit www.wakingdeath.ca

“Sweet Sweet ” Yellow Warbler

Did You Know?

Male Yellow Warblers

(Setophaga petechia) perch high in tall shrubs or trees whistling a “sweet, sweet, sweet, I’m so sweet” sounding song. These tunes can be repeated up to ten times a minute.

They help keep insect populations in control by eating caterpillars and beetles, as well as a variety of other organisms.

The Yellow Warbler is usually 12 - 13 cm in length with a wingspan of 16 - 20 cm.

Even though both sexes are bright yellow, male birds tend to have red streaks on their chest.

Yellow Warblers build their nests in a vertical fork of a small tree or shrub, usually within 3 meters of the ground. When defending their habitat, they make a hissing sound to scare off the intruder.

They can take off flying instantly, with their wings going straight back until perpendicular to the body. These birds are so tiny, they can be caught in a spider’s web.

How to find

ADAPTIVE AND INCLUSIVE PROGRAMS if your child has additional support needs

This article excerpt was published in the Lethbridge Sport Council online magazine --> lethbridgesportcouncil ca/sportmatters

Having inclusive and adaptive recreational programs available is so important because it can help your child develop independence, build friendships, and increase confidence, all while having fun.

While the words “adaptive” and “inclusive” are often interchanged when promoting programs for children with disabilities, they’re not the same Adaptive programs are modified to make a program more accessible, while inclusive programs permit children with disabilities to join the same program. If you’re keen on one type of program over another, be sure to ask the sport organization or program supervisor which is used

Take a deep dive into the program and scan the interpersonal skills of the instructor: How do they manage conflict? How do they treat the children? What type of teaching or coaching style do they use? All children are unique and their needs differ What one child might benefit from, another might not and that’s normal. Trial and error is a common way of getting into a new sport, especially for children with differing abilities. Take a look at the physical environment: Can your child access the change rooms, bathrooms, and main rooms being used? Are there harsh lights or loud music playing? Will your child have challenges in accessing this environment? If a child is uncomfortable being in a space, they won’t enjoy it as much as they could, even if the program seems perfect. Look into the program support structure: What is the ratio of support staff? Are aids allowed to accompany a child?

Look at the difficulty and the adaptability: Would your child have trouble playing these games and practicing these skills? Would they find the rules or lengthy instructions draining? If they cannot keep up, can the program or lessons be modified to better suit their needs?
