editor’s letter

over half of this entire issue), it’s old movies, it’s fellow photographers and creatives, stunning landscapes when traveling and the people crossing our paths along the way. For me, all of those things play a part but mostly it’s witnessing unselfish acts of devotion and support. It is that that finds a way to add to beauty to the moments in my life and feed my creative bug. This month I had the privilege of working with Mr. Elgort himself on “Denim and my Whistle” which features Kira, one of my favorite models, wearing this seasons best denim and a symbol of protest, a whistle by Falling Whistles. Falling Whistles organization rehabilitates children that are inside the worlds deadliest war. Their team is army in itself and they are literally making the weapon of the children put on the front lines of war as human barricades, the whistle, their voice. The mission? To advocate for peace and the end of the war in Congo. For about a year now, my whistle has become my only everyday accessory other than my great grandmother’s ring (which I haven’t taken off since I’m 16), and has become the catalyst for activism on the part of others and myself. I never would have thought a whistle would have the influence to change my life for the better, but it has. I would love to hear what has influenced positive change in your life. It’s worth celebrating!

Zoe Joeright Codi Barbini Currently, a third year Fine Art student at the California Institute of the Arts, majoring in Photography. Art has been a life long passion but her love for photography began when she was hired as the still photographer on an independent horror film at age 15. Her photographs were used as the film’s one-sheet. Since then, her work has been published in Signature L.A. Magazine, The Collective magazine, The LA Times Blog, and others. She is constantly striving for artistic expression, one which blurs the lines between the art and the commercial. www.wherescodi.com. © Collective Magazine 2010

Fashion Stylist Zoe Joeright knew from an early age that she would one day pursue a career in fashion. Born and raised in Massachusetts, Zoe has become one of the leading stylists in Los Angeles because of her eye for detail, professionalism, and passion. After college, Zoe moved to New York and worked in costume design for numerous Off-Broadway productions. Following New York, Zoe moved to Southern California to pursue a freelance career that would allow her to utilize her fashion design and costume background. She has since worked in major magazines, advertising campaigns and celebrity editorials around the world.

Ellinor Stigle’s passion for literature, poetry and dance is a driving force behind her photography. This result in a soft and romantic style of imagery with an eerie undertone, full of emotion and sensitivity. Born and raised in Stockholm, Sweden. Her love for photography and big dreams brought her to New York to study at the International Center of Photography. Immediately after graduating from the General Studies program she was invited to partake in her first group show, which introduced her to the art world in New York where she continue to make guest appearances. She lives in downtown New York where she lives with her husband and their little boxer puppy Kloe.

The landscape is a frame, a body, a home, a feeling. Across Landscapes is using the landscape as an idea rather than something that is concrete. The landscape should exist as an extensive mental viewpoint. Pairing these portraits with more abstract images, pairing images that seem still, with ones that are full of motion, expression and anxiety, result in a unique psychological union.

She drifts languorously in the apartment, the summer heat - a heavy, foggy veil that puts sweat on her back and images in her head, pictures of days spent in other cities; nights spent in the arms with such importance and now whose detail fades into soft edges, the harder she looks, the less sharp they become, now just the crinkled edge of a photograph barely seen, squinting, one level down.. Places that had a meaning once resonating like a bronze colored cup bouncing on the white tile floor in another apartment left years before-so tempting, strong, intriguing and yet not quite understood, not quite comprehensible, not quite clear‌ Š Collective Magazine 2010

Kate Nauta

When Kate Nauta strides into a room, people take notice. Aside from the long lean physique, clear skin, and sharp features she has a rare entangled strength and steely gaze that builds visual potential with each glance; the kind to make directors stutter apparently genuine promises about leading roles... If she looks familiar, it’s because after finding some success as a model, she then was ‘discovered’ by Luc Besson - and starred in Transporter 2 - where

girl with the machine guns’. But it’s a different time now; the harsh bleached hair is gone, replaced by a mild tint of light strawberry brunette. There is also more to Kate than a charming way with fully automatic weapons. ‘I’m giving everything to my music now’, she told me at our first meeting. And I tried to keep myself from being skeptical. Yes, she has a remarkable ease and strength with the camera, and has had successes in acting - but singing as well?

“Come to my car and listen to this.” She said. “I’ve been working with Lenny [Kravitz] on this, a song I wrote about my brother and his struggle with Crystal-Meth.”

We walked to the car, and I got in as she rummaged through discs and then turned on the sound. All I can say, is you have got to hear this girl sing. You are going to hear this girl sing. “We did that in 2 takes.” She told me. “I just kind of hit it.” When you do hear Kate sing, there is a modern flute-sweet principal voice where she spends a lot of time. But then there is this immense volcanic rawness that comes out now and then, and you find yourself waiting for it to appear again. The contrast between the two voices carries the song forward. You have to struggle to forget how she looks, to believe that this big underneath sound can actually come from her its defies logic.

HERE AGAIN

The song I heard was plaintive, haunting - and catchy. Her voice opens up into such rough fullness at those points that it makes you wonder what she could do in the style of a Joan Jett or a Pat Benatar. She’d kill it…no guns necessary. When the music has stopped, it leaves you wondering where exactly all this force comes from. Evidently from far down, farther than she used to reach in modeling, or even acting. “In truth, the music is so intertwined with my faith, they are not even my words.” She tells me, somewhat surprised at what she has just Silk Wrap, Chan Luu

“The cry of my heart is my music.” She says. The truth starts flowing, in her intense and direct style. “This [music] is the only thing I have cared about. Things have been handed to me before - the acting, the modeling. This has not been handed to me.” She pauses, reflecting on her relationship with her new career. “I’m humbled. I realize what it is to have and not to have, and I want to do this, to fulfill this - music is that, my voice is that - what I’ve been called on to do.” “I put aside acting this year.” She says, “I went into hiding to write this album. It’s been emotionally difficult; it’s raw. There’s nothing certain about tomorrow - and it’s the most vulnerable and fragile I’ve ever been.” And yet, her path is clear to her. She knows singing is what she most wants to do.

And that started the collaboration again. The new Kate came with her full game to our photo-shoot. She has clearly come a long way from her old feelings about modeling, as she definitely gave 100% to make the images as strong as possible. Evidently the fallout from being ‘humbled’ has led to new awareness and presence in all of her work. She now has the control, the power and the subtlety in her transmission to make the pictures really work, and call to mind another level of narrative that’s just out of reach, or unstated, left

Viva mayr

hardcore – starting your morning not with the traditional coffee, but with a glass of water with a healthy dose of Epsom Salts… which is basically liquid plumber for your insides. Breakfast, lunch and dinner are completely regimented and prescribed by the doctor and his staff on Day One. Nothing is to be eaten after 7pm, and moreover, nothing raw after 3pm. And one of the biggest dictates? Chew each bite 40 times. “You need to allow your body to digest the food otherwise you overeat,” he states, adding that while eating, there’s no drinking – not even water. When one is used to eating late night, combined with a glass of wine or two, this is not exactly a little slice of heaven, despite the view that Viva Mayr has to offer akin to The Sound of Music. In essence: Dr. Stossier abdicates no alcohol, no caffeine, no sugar - no fun. But this is the only way to clear the toxins from our systems. “Look, this therapy is not like walking in the park, you will have reactions – it’s very intense. If you’re not aware of the things you have going on in your body and you can freak out. But then after the first few days, automatically you feel better and better as the days go on.”Of course, there are tales of cheaters – those who come to Viva but hide their candy and alcohol stash in the safe supplied in each room, in an effort to sneak eat but not get caught by the housekeeping staff. “I don’t understand why someone would come here to see us and get healthy, and do that to themselves,” mulls Stossier.

Viva mayr

What he requires is two to three weeks to re-educate your subconscious. “It is sort of brainwashing, but in a good way,” laughs the doctor. While his mood is upbeat and lyrical, his attitude is very serious. This is the investment of a lifetime, as far as he is concerned. “People that come here and take the time, we have studies that show after two years they are 50% better inside and out – than when they came here.” These are doctrines and ideals to take to the table (excuse the pun) for the rest of our lives. “It’s not a question of how old we become, it’s more how we become old,” according to Stossier. A grass roots movement always starts out slowly, and gains followers one by one. The doctor knows it’s a tall order to try to re-educate the majority of the Western World in their eating habits and make them stick, but he’s willing to try - one willing and able body – and mind -- at a time.

INFLUENCE to INNOVATION You don’t have to be an icon, celebrity, politician, coach, or champion of a cause to be influential or innovative. In fact, all you have to do is be yourself. The most common thing a lot of people do is copy other people’s actions, attitudes, styles, and behaviors and follow the crowd because it seems like the safest and easiest thing to do at the time. Take a step back. Shouldn’t you be striving to stand out from the crowd? Keep following the crowd and that’s exactly where you’ll end up – as another statistic who went through life without making any significant contributions or leaving any sort of lasting legacy.

wonderful self with the world – are you on board? Regardless of what you decide to do, a third of the people will like you, a third of the people will hate you, and a third of the people don’t care enough to know you’re even around. Stop wasting time trying to please the crowd and convert the haters, and start to trust your own instincts and believe you were born to be great! Be yourself and show the world you’re As poet and playwright T.S. Eliot once said, proud of the way you are! So be yourself, take care of yourself, and continue to establish and define yourself in everything you do. There’s only one you and no one can tell you you’re doing it wrong!!

Only those who risk going too far can possibly find out how far one can go.

What energy source powers the brave innovators among us to attempt to change the world? Freedom from groupthink! The first step to being an innovator and influencer is to free yourself from the pressures of society, stop caring what other people think about you, and have an unwavering belief in yourself. Starting today, have the confidence to swim against the current and be who you are with no apologies. Starting right now, you’re going to start sharing your true

Keep in mind, there’s a big difference between being yourself and being rude. You are entitled to your opinions, dreams, and preferences, but please respect that everyone else is in the exact same boat.

final word

Nevertheless, every time you agree with someone else just to appease them or avoid an argument, you’re sacrificing sharing a piece of your wonderful self with the world. Whether it’s your sense of style or a wild and crazy innovative business idea you have, if your way of doing something strays from the crowd, it’s probably worth pursuing, so don’t hide your uniqueness. Instead, be proud of it! Need a new outlet for your passion? Start a blog. It’s free and you’ll be surprised at how many people appreciate you just for being you. If you’re clever, you can even find a way to monetize your brand and passions and be paid…..just for being you!

You have greatness within you; be brave enough to share it with the world!!
