PROGRAMS

In-person courses, semi-private courses, and workshops are offered in a variety of mediums at the Bemis School of Art. The semi-private offerings allow for a limited number of students to receive personalized instruction.

Military Artistic Healing classes are offered in-person as well as virtually for greater access for veterans, active-duty military personnel, and their spouses.

Offsite and travel classes are offered in partnership and collaboration with other organizations. Students attending offsite and travel classes or workshops must follow the COVID-19 guidelines provided by the host businesses.

Bemis School of Art

Bemis has a parking lot for registered students on the north side of the building off Cache La Poudre. Please make sure to pick up a permit for Bemis School of Art at the front desk on your first day of class. Bemis permits are good during your registered class time only. Please note that permits do not guarantee space in the parking lot.

If there is no parking available in the lot, there is street parking available at the base of the hill and around Monument Valley Park and Mesa Road. Please be aware of city permit parking signage along Cache La Poudre between the hours of 7 a.m.–5 p.m. Monday–Friday. Parking on Cache la Poudre requires a permit from the city. Bemis parking permits are not honored for on-street parking.

Whatever your artistic interest, age, or skill level, the Fine Arts Center’s Bemis School of Art has classes to drive your passions. Build community with other artists while exploring and developing your artistic skills.

Youth – Arts education cultivates the entire child, developing literacy, intuition, reasoning, imagination, and dexterity while allowing space for creative expression.

To provide quality art education, the Fine Arts Center’s Bemis School of Art applies the Colorado Model Content Standards for Visual Arts to all youth classes.

Adult – Adult courses range in experience level from absolute beginner courses aimed at building fundamental skills to advanced courses designed to allow experienced artists to hone their skills.

Military – Thanks to grants and individual donations, Military Artistic Healing classes are offered in a variety of mediums at no charge to military veterans, active-duty military, and their families.

Accessibility – We are happy to accommodate students with accessibility needs. Please call (719) 475-2444.

Visiting Artists – We are proud to offer classes and workshops by visiting and regional professional artists. Past artists have included Cochiti Pueblo potter, Virgil Ortiz, Sundance award–winning filmmaker Tom Shepard, Laguna Pueblo potter and poet Max Early, and Loving Vincent painter and animator Dena Peterson.

Plein Air – This symbol designates a class that takes place outside ‘in the open air,’ not at the Bemis School of Art campus.

SUPPLIES

Supplies will be provided for youth classes unless otherwise noted. Students enrolled in adult classes must provide their own supplies. Each course’s supply list may be found on the corresponding course webpage at artschool.csfineartscenter.org/ classes. There may be instructors who opt to provide specialty supplies for an additional materials fee payable to them on the first day of class. This option will be noted in the corresponding course description.

Please read all registration procedures and related policies carefully. You may register online or by phone. Full payment is due upon enrollment. Checks, cash, money orders, and all major credit cards are accepted.

Registration should be made as soon as possible. Class sizes are limited and spaces are filled on a first-come, first-served basis.

TUITION ASSISTANCE

The Fine Arts Center’s Bemis School of Art offers limited full and partial tuition assistance to youth and adult students with demonstrated financial need. Visit fac.coloradocollege.edu/art-school to request assistance or to donate to the fund.

CLASS LEVELS

Level A – All levels welcome.

Level 0 – This class is for the true beginner with no prior experience in the medium.

Level I – This class is for those with some familiarity with the medium. This could include informal use of the medium outside of the classroom.

Level II – This class is for those who have taken at least one class in the medium. Students should be comfortable with the basics of how to use and manipulate the medium.

Level III – This class is for those who have significant experience in the medium –2-3 or more classes or a year or more of experience.

Level IV – This class is for those with advanced skill or knowledge in the medium. This could include four or more classes or several years of experience. Students should be highly motivated and self–directed. Some classes in this level will require a portfolio review and/or approval by the instructor.

Registration implies the responsible party understands the course levels above and has selected a course that matches their skill level. Students who are identified as being enrolled in a class above their actual level will be encouraged to move into a class that better fits their level of skills.

Introduction to the Elements of Art

This class is for children who enjoy their art classes in school and would appreciate greater freedom in what they create. The course will cover the 7 Elements of Art and the 12 Principles of Design, then guide students along a basic art creation process. By the end of the course, each student will have an art piece to share and present in front of their classmates. Supplies will be provided.

Boxes and Treasures

Instructor: Alyson Blanton

Have you always been fascinated by treasures no one understands and need a special place for them? In this class we will construct clay boxes of differing sizes and shapes using various techniques to hold our special objects. We will also make our own treasures out of clay and other materials to place within our special box. Come construct, sculpt, and paint with us; there will be an equal emphasis on product and process. Supplies will be provided.

Painted Sculptures

Instructor:

Zandra Zieman-Foster

Create animal sculptures inspired by the Oaxacan-painted animals of Mexico. You will learn about color theory, rhythm, repetition, and how to mix colors. You will then apply these skills to a variety of projects including painting, pattern making, and sculpture. Sculptures will be made with wood in the shape of an animal or something else of your choosing. Supplies will be provided.

The Mountain that Loved a Bird

Instructor: Linda Sagastume

Explore making art using painted papers and collaging them in the style of Eric Carle who illustrated The Mountain that Loved a Bird. Bold colors and shapes will come together to create pictures inspired by the illustrations in this book. A fun and playful approach will be encouraged as well as the freedom for creative expression. Supplies will be provided.

Art and Acting in the Forest

Enjoy outstanding arts education with instructors from the Fine Art Center’s Bemis School of Art set in the lush forest at the 400acre La Foret Conference and Retreat Center. The FAC’s partnership with La Foret has a long history. Alice Bemis Taylor, one of the three benefactresses of the Fine Arts Center, had her summer home at La Foret. The Taylor Memorial Chapel, built in 1929, was designed by the Fine Art Center’s architect, John Gaw Meem.

Stretch your imagination! Experience a variety of artistic styles and techniques, including painting, printmaking, and mixed-media art while exploring elements of composition and design. Cultivate your acting skills, voice, movement, and characterization with theater games, mime, and improvisation. Art and acting will come together on Fridays with a special showcase performance and art exhibit for friends and family.

La Foret staff will provide swimming in the afternoon, so bring your swimsuit, towel, and sunscreen. Each student should bring lunch and snacks and should be prepared for a variety of activities and weather. No open-toed shoes or sandals. Students may arrive after 8:50 a.m.

La Foret is a licensed childcare organization and requires several forms for your child’s protection (Camp Health Form and Certificate of Immunization). Some require a doctor’s signature. All the forms must be completed and given to La Foret prior to the first day of camp. Your child cannot participate until the paperwork is received. All forms can be found on the Bemis School of Art website.

This course is a fun way to learn new drawing skills and how to train your eyes to really see. There is no “can’t” in this introduction to drawing course – only “I can!” You will be guided on how to render an object, bringing depth into your work. Explore how to use color and source of light to make your ideas come to life. Fundamentals of Acrylic Painting

Acrylic painting is a fun, vibrant, and a fast-drying way to express yourself. Learn some basic drawing and painting techniques such as: composition, building up the volume of an object, rendering techniques, a variety of brush strokes, bringing a light source into your paintings, layering, introduction into color theory, and so much more! Practice these techniques by working with still life references, landscape paintings, and more. 3D Sculpture

This fun introduction into 3D sculpture design is a unique and exciting way to explore your creative side using traditional and non-traditional art methods and materials. Bemis ArtTrax: Drawing

Bemis ArtTrax is a new curriculum created to provide equitable and accessible pathways to the arts. ArtTrax courses introduce the fundamental concepts of painting, drawing, and sculpting through a series of engaging exercises. Emphasis is not on producing finished works of art but rather on developing a basic skill set through practice and repetition. No prior knowledge or experience in the medium is needed or expected for level I classes. The courses then proceed sequentially, each level building upon what was previously presented. Whether you are just getting started or have never drawn before, this course will give you all the tools and skills you need to begin your drawing practice! Colored Pencil Sampler

This fun, colored pencil workshop will lighten the heavy handed. You will explore color through colored pencils with blending techniques like burnishing, as well as explore how to bring a light source into your work. Enameling on Granite Ware

Camp dinnerware known as “granite ware” makes an easyto-enamel substrate for further enameling (powdered glass fused to the surface). We’ll create designs for a circular form, then apply enamels on six-inch-diameter plates, fuse them to the plate by firing for a few minutes, and repeat the process in many successive layers. Enameling: Rhapsody in Blues

In this workshop, we’ll create compositions that maximize the various qualities of blue glass fired to metals, including transparent blues on silver foil, mixes and gradations of opaque blues, and overlays of transparents on opaques. Jewelry Production & Lost Wax Casting

Advanced jewelry makers – this class is for you! Experience different ways to work with wax including wax modeling, carving wax, wax sheet construction, applying textures to wax, and metal to wax weight calculation. Spruing for casting and metal flow, investing for casting to achieve solid porosity free castings. To complete the project, you will also learn how to finish, polish, adjust size, hang balance for pendants, earring placement, and weight the pieces. Depending on time and student’s ability, stone setting may also be explored.

Please note that casting will be done off site at the instructor’s studio; more information will be shared on the first day of class. The instructor will show how to use flexible shaft tools. Meow, hoot, woof! The possibilities are many when it comes to the Peyote stitch. Why not challenge your peyote skills to stitch up a whimsical cat, dog, or owl mini pouch necklace? This particular odd count tubular peyote method starts by building both sides of the pouch from the bottom up, from one line of strung beads. In addition, learn the twisted herringbone stitch to make a fun strap to complete the necklace. Ears, feet, and tails can be added for more details, as well as face design. Throwing Off the Hump

Level II – This class is for those who have taken at least one class in the medium. Students should be comfortable with the basics of how to use and manipulate the medium.

Rough center only once, fine center just the top, then throw off the hump! Learn to throw multiple repeated shapes; mugs, tea bowls, small plates and bowls, hollow ornaments, mortars and pestles, and spoon rests. Learn how to remove the pot from the hump and then how to trim that pot. You will be able to modify the form while still on the hump. Get creative and find more possibilities for throwing off the hump. Various glazing processes will be explored to finish off your works of art. Supply list online. 16–Adult

POLICIES & WAIVERS

Registration implies the responsible party understands and agrees to the following policies and waivers.

POLICIES

General

• The FAC’s Bemis School of Art reserves the right to change class instructors when necessary.

• Use of studios for commercial production work is not allowed.

• Studios are reserved for the use of registered students only.

• Tuition fees are for the entire course as scheduled regardless of attendance. No refunds or make up classes will be given for absences. We do not pro-rate tuition.

• Students should register for courses within the level range (listed above) that accurately matches their skill level.

• Parents must arrive to pick up their children on time. A childcare fee may be assessed for children waiting for more than 15 minutes.

• The FAC’s Bemis School of Art reserves the right to refuse enrollment to participants with a history of unacceptable behavior.

• Disorderly conduct or misbehavior while on Fine Arts Center grounds will not be allowed and may result in suspension from class(es).

• Suspension due to misconduct does not release the student/parent from financial obligation to the FAC. Parents must arrange for child’s transportation home immediately (as applicable).

• Students should refrain from attending class if they are feeling unwell.

Withdrawals, Refunds, and Transfers

• Tuition fees are for the entire course as scheduled regardless of attendance. No refunds or make-up classes will be given for absences. We do not pro-rate tuition.

• Notice of withdrawal must be received by the Bemis front desk staff by phone (719) 475-2444 or email bemis@coloradocollege.edu no later than one week prior to the first day of class.

• No refunds will be given to participants who elect to withdraw from a class once it has begun.

• There is a $10 withdrawal fee for Fine Arts Center members and a $20 withdrawal fee for nonmembers if notice of withdrawal is given a week prior to the class start date.

• Failure to attend sessions or notification to the instructor will not be regarded as an official notice of withdrawal.

• Request for a course transfer must be received by the Bemis front desk staff by phone (719) 4752444 or email bemis@coloradocollege.edu no later than one week prior to the first day of class.

• Participants may transfer classes one time per semester. Each additional course transfer will incur a $10 transfer fee.

• Checks returned are not honored for any reason and will be subject to a $15 NSF charge and subject to prosecution to the fullest extent of the law.

Course Cancellations and Changes

The Bemis School of Art reserves the right to cancel, combine, or reschedule classes. If it is necessary to cancel a class for any reason, all registered participants will be informed as soon as possible and given the opportunity to transfer into another class. If a participant does not wish to transfer into another class, they may instead opt to receive a gift card to use toward any future Bemis School of Art course or a refund in the method in which they originally paid (card, cash, or check).

WAIVERS

Publicity Waiver

Unless informed otherwise in writing, the Bemis School of Art considers photographs taken of students and their artwork to be permissible for publication in Colorado College, Fine Arts Center, and Bemis School of Art informational and promotional publications, including websites and social media.

Medical Care Waiver

In the event of illness or injury, the staff of the Bemis School of Art will act as the agent in obtaining medical care for registered students and have permission to contact the participant’s emergency contact(s) on file.

VIRTUAL POLICIES

Students registered for virtual courses are expected to conduct themselves as if participating in an on–site Bemis course. As a virtual course registrant, Bemis asks that you please be aware of your surroundings during virtual class sessions. Ensure your Zoom camera background is simple and clear of any foot traffic, including family members moving in and out of view, bright backlighting, or anything else that would be distracting to fellow students and the instructor. If need be, you can choose to turn off your camera in Zoom and turn it back on when you’re ready.

VIRTUAL WAIVER

By registering for a Bemis School of Art virtual course, you are acknowledging that instructors and fellow students of said course may be able to view everything in the line of sight of all shared camera video during live Zoom sessions. Virtual courses may be recorded for quality assurance and promotional publications, including websites and social media.
