Ornamental Gutters Rain and precipitation diversion has been a part of homebuilding for centuries upon centuries. In the Vail Valley, it’s also an art form. by Kimberly Nicoletti
W
ater is such an essential part of life, it has influenced nearly every aspect of our lives, from how we travel, to how we build our homes. Though often overlooked, gutters are an important example of how water — namely, its management — has led homebuilders to invent, and reinvent again and

again, better and more beautiful ways to channel the fluid substance so necessary for life, yet also so threatening to the very foundation of our shelters. As early as 47 A.D., the Romans honored the importance of controlling water — particularly the dirty kind. They revered the goddess of drains and sewers, named Cloacina. In 1066, when
the Normans invaded England, they restored the country’s homes and churches, which led them to install both gutters and decorative gargoyles to repel water from foundations. During the Middle Ages, the most frequent cases that came to authorities’ attention involved gutter disputes, due to cramped quarters and poor building conditions.
By the 18th century, American homes, especially high-end ones, featured built-in, cedar gutters with metal canals. Since then, gutter design and durability have improved drastically. Ornamental gutters Nationwide, 70 percent of homeowners use seamless aluminum gutters, with various colors

Like most advancements in civilization, even before builders perfected gutter technology, they began making it aesthetically pleasing.
painted or baked on, according to gutters.com, but in the Vail Valley, homeowners like to fancy-up their water-diversion techniques, and they usually do it in the form of copper and zinc. In fact, neighborhoods like Bachelor Gulch and Cordillera require copper gutters. In addition to pleasing visuals, copper delivers a much better lifetime product — about 100 years, compared to alloy products, which hold up for about 40, said Jim Farrell, owner of Vail Valley Gutters. And, as far as seamless goes, he is one of the few gutter installers in the state who can manufacture continuous metal gutters; he has manufactured copper gutters measuring well over 100 feet. Continuous gutters lack seams, which often cause leaks. Copper gutters begin shiny, and some homeowners pay experts to buff them as long as they can maintain the shine, but, in Vail Valley’s dry environment, the copper becomes brown, like an old penny, within a year, Farrell said.
In other climates, such as on the East Coast, copper turns green — think Statue of Liberty — and as it turns out, professionals can add various chemicals to copper gutters to accelerate certain types of patinas. Specific chemicals will turn the copper various shades of green, blue and even pink. The patina remains about the same once the chemical is applied. Farrell has seen some homeowners apply polyurethane to their gutters in an attempt to protect the color, but he avoids polyurethane, as it can spider out with temperature fluctuations. Though copper is the most popular ornamental gutter, a number of Vail Valley homeowners, especially those who prefer modern, contemporary or even industrial looks, chose zinc gutters. Zinc gutters cost about the same as copper; they just deliver a different aesthetic. In terms of style, gutters come in a variety of shapes and sizes normally ranging from 4 to 6

Extra adornments From the actual gutter, homeowners can accentuate with conductor heads, ornamental outlets, gutter medallions, ornamental hangers and downspout brackets, and even gargoyles. Conductor heads, also known as collector boxes, are often custom fabricated, and range in styles from fleur-de-lis or a medieval turret with an embossed lion, to an industrial-looking, sleek zinc box. Farrell prefers to use conductor heads when two or three downspouts come together; the conductor head is more aesthetically pleasing than a Y-shaped convergence of gutters. Gutter medallions in the form of leaves, shells and flowers can enhance the visual appearance of gutters, while ornamental outlets add a touch of elegance while also
funneling leaves to avoid gutter clogging. Ornamental copper hangers are built stronger these days and employ screws rather than nuts and bolts, the latter of which are more vulnerable to fail, Farrell said. Even downspout brackets come in styles ranging from fleur-de-lis to trefoil, or scroll and ball. And, for areas of the home that experience low volumes of water and don’t need large downspouts, gargoyles still come into play — only now they come in the form of not just dragons, but also eagles, lions, sea serpents, hounds and more. chasing soul Local designer Nancy Sanford personifies rooms in her quest for spaces with soul by Nancy Sanford
I
n the course of creating a good interior design, I tend to personify rooms. In many ways, they are similar to people and have similar attributes, sometimes even soul. Soul can mean a variety of things to different people. To me, it’s a feeling, not something that

can be calculated. It is abstract and subjective. A soulful room has a design that is so right it sings beautifully. Everything seems to be in harmony. I can’t really explain this. I just sense it. Nonetheless, I thought it might be an interesting exercise to explain — and demystify — the
design of a soulful room. The way I see it, soul consists of three abstract sub-categories: Substance Personality Mood Substance Appreciating and understanding
soul requires delving below the surface. For example, vignettes at furniture stores are pleasing and some customers purchase the entire configuration as is. Everything is sized perfectly and colored appropriately. But, although the room is filled up with furniture, art and acces-

garden days are coming There’s snow on the ground, but it’s still time to think about this year’s garden by becky garber

eed catalogs were mailed long ago and the online business is already booming. If you haven’t started planning this year’s garden, then grab something warm to drink, cozy up to the fire with your laptop and anticipate spring! How much and when to order? For most home gardeners, one or two seed packets per variety are all you’ll need. To have the best selection in seeds, place your order soon. Popular varieties will sell out, so be an early bird if you want to catch the best seed. Can I use any of this past season’s leftover seeds? While some plant varieties will

produce seeds that will last for centuries, they are generally the exception. Anasazi beans collected from the cliff dwellings in southwestern Colorado that were planted soon after discovery are good to grow. Beans, grain and corn are generally longer-lived than other plants — but the hybridized versions we use predominately today don’t have a prolonged shelf life. Best rule of thumb is to check the expiration date on old seed bags and toss expired seeds. If you have leftover seeds from past seasons that are questionable, then you can check them out with a pre-season germination test. Plant a couple seeds of each variety indoors in a sand or

Presidential Retreat The Beaver Creek home of Vail’s ‘First Family’ has had an extensive renovation, but it all comes with the presidential seal of approval

hen people walk into President Gerald Ford’s former home, one of the first things they see is the 18-inch, granite presidential seal engraved into the limestone hallway floor. Oddly enough, it wasn’t always there; Kevin Hayes, president of West

Point Investment Corporation, installed it during his approximately $4 million renovation, when he purchased the home in early 2007, after Ford’s death. “The president would never do that; he was just too humble,” Hayes says. But Hayes wanted to honor Ford. “When you walk in
and see the presidential seal, it’s a wow moment. You realize who used to live here.” Ford and his wife last visited their Beaver Creek home, which they built in 1983, in July 2006. Ford made the trip from his home in California against doctor’s orders because he wanted
to take in Beaver Creek’s mountain views one more time, Hayes explains. The combination of Ford’s heart condition and the high elevation caused him to leave abruptly and check into the Mayo Clinic, where he received a stint; after that, the Fords decided to sell. They

listed it December 22, and Hayes had it under contract by 3 p.m. December 26; the president died two hours later. Though that year the Vail Valley lost what Beth Slifer, of Slifer Designs, calls the valley’s No. 1 citizens and “our First Family,” their home at 65 Elk Track Court still remains — in its modernized form — for anyone to short-term rent through Triumph Mountain Properties. Hayes transformed the once separate-entrance apartment where secret service officials, as well as the president’s and first lady’s secretaries stayed, into a billiard and game room. Visible from the Strawberry Park chair lift, it now houses one of Ford’s blue ski jackets and a pair of his K2 skis. Hayes said people could always tell when the president was in Beaver Creek because the secret service’s black automobiles, with

their embedded police lights in the grills, always backed into the driveway for a quick escape. Before Hayes purchased the home, rumors spread about the freestanding structure in the back of the home; people said that’s where the secret service stayed, walking to and from the main home through tunnels. As it turns out, there are no tunnels, and the separate structure houses Ford’s lap pool, where he unfailingly swam twice a day, while Betty rode her stationary bike, located next to the pool.

Though Hayes updated the home extensively (for example, he nearly doubled the size of the kitchen), he preserved certain items. The Fords owned two dining room tables — a small one for the two of them, and a larger one for entertaining. Hayes refinished the larger one, which hosted distinguished guests such as Presidents Bill Clinton and George Bush, Vice President Quayle, and Henry Kissinger, and it now sits in the kitchen. But perhaps the most notable historical part of the home hides under a rug in Ford’s original office. Hayes placed a desk where Ford sat at his own desk (most of Ford’s furniture was auctioned off when he died, to support the Vail Valley Foundation) in a small atrium just off a large, opulent office. Hayes replaced the flooring but preserved a 3' by 5' area of

the original, tan, 12” by 12” ceramic tile, which bears the marks of Ford’s chair, where he rocked back and forth and scored the tile. “It’s like a mini-museum,” Hayes says, “with a great family vacation component to it.”

Real Estate’s Sweet Spot Between rising sale prices and competitive mortgage rates, Vail Valley real estate is looking up.

lthough it may be easier said than done when it comes to something as personal as real estate, it’s important to strive for. The Vail Board of REALTORS (VBR) has released the December 2013 Monthly Snapshot of market conditions in the Vail Valley and even though there are some notable negative numbers to

address, more importantly, the positives are where they should be and are holding steady for a stabilizing market. December may have closed with lackluster results, but 2013 was a good year for Colorado and the Vail Valley overall. The number of homes for sale during the busy holiday month was down compared to the same time
last year, as was the number of closings, but the average sales price was definitely up and holding in certain key price points. In fact, these 2013 key price points were better than 2012. Not to mention, foreclosures continue to decline and homes are spending slightly less time on the market. Gone are the days of price drop after price drop and
300 days on the market. Sellers are getting the prices they ask for in a reasonable amount of time — when appropriately priced — and buyers are still getting great mortgage rates. How long will these trends last? Hopefully throughout 2014 as the job market remains stable, the stock market continues to rise, and consumers gain back

their confidence. Throughout 2013, some community pockets in the Vail Valley experienced what seemed like the good ol’ days with multiple-offer situations and higher prices than expected, catching some buyers off guard. How could this be? When you own in a desirable location with world-class, year-round recreation and top quality infrastructure, this really shouldn’t come as a surprise. Kyle Denton, Vail real estate professional with Ascent/ Sotheby’s International Realty, feels that the December market conditions are simply a great example of the effects of supply and demand. “Low December inventory
in the right direction and trends are the catalyst for savvy real estate transactions.” Budd also recommends that, “Buyers have their local real estate professional provide specific insight into the neighborhood markets of interest for more detailed information.” Per Budd’s advice, the best plan of attack if you are thinking of selling or buying real estate in the Vail Valley is to contact your broker. Buyers should put together their “wish list” and ideal price point to discuss with their broker. These professionals network and stay on top of properties that are coming to the market — ones not listed in the MLS yet. Sellers, let your brokers know your timeframe

Takeaway: With buyer confidence up and prices holding steady, sellers remain cautious in bringing their homes to the market. In a resort area like the Vail Valley, this could be for a myriad of reasons. Some of the reasons may be rentals by absentee owners, concerns on market values, mortgage status etc. However, make no mistake: Sellers are keeping an eye on the rising market prices and percent of list price received, and there could be more homes coming to market in the near future with an even more positive outlook for a hearty summer selling season.

S paci o u sne ss. T ran q ui li t y. B re at h . Mi n d f u l ne ss. For centuries, the Asian tradition of home décor has honed the art of living in harmony with exterior and interior landscapes. The practice of feng shui extensively details the flow of energy and how every aspect, from a dwelling’s design and placement on the land to the location of a vase, supports or constricts chi — life energy flow. Like religions, various feng shui schools of thought prescribe a variety of different actions to remedy stagnant energy and promote healthier flow. Some may even seemingly contradict each other, wherein one practitioner calls for the use of the color red in one direction of the dwelling and another calls for red in another; as generations passed and translations evolved, specific prescriptions changed and adapted to modern conditions, such as adjusting to the practice of building homes near busy roads. But one thing remains constant: Asian aesthetics — with or without a specific regime of feng shui — emphasize living in balance internally and externally, much the way Native Americans lived in harmony with the Western environment, weaving in a sense of simplicity, respect of land resources and attunement to nature.

Generally speaking, the Asian aesthetic relies on simple lines, sparing details, warm woods, and brilliant colors, such as reds and yellows. “It imbues a space with a sense of calm and quiet and simplicity,” said Susan Bristol, co-owner of Asian Village in Edwards. From a home’s structural style and location on the lot, to its interior design, guiding principles involve balance and symmetry. And, even when a home is designed without using traditional feng shui tenets, a well-planned floor plan tends to naturally lend itself to a sense of harmony. “If it’s good design and well
conceived and intuitive, all those things work well,” said Kyle Webb, owner of K.H. Webb Architects. Like most architects, he designs homes to draw people through space; they literally create movement through a series of well-designed entryways, doors, windows, walls and the like. Feng shui acts in a similar way; it arranges space to open pathways in which energy flows naturally, like water easily rolling down a graded river.

Bristol and UnChu Ring, owners of Asian Village, followed feng shui design principles in designing their store, and Bristol
said customers regularly comment on how pleasantly different their interior feels. “It seems to create a good flow of chi,” Bristol said. They painted their walls according to one school of feng shui thought — red on the south “fame” wall and imperial yellow on the east. They placed the jewelry display in the “metal” corner and organized other items similarly. But for their clients, they simply suggest common sense when it comes to Asian design. “Most people don’t get into feng shui — it’s a little bit mystical for our lifestyle, and you can go overboard. It’s more important to have a space livable,” Bristol
said, adding: “Asian design stresses an awareness that everything has an energy. You don’t want to jumble things together. You want to create a sense of flow.” Asian Village specializes in importing Chinese pieces from the 18th and 19th centuries. Each piece is carefully preserved with lacquer but otherwise untouched. Antique Chinese furniture features mortise and tenon construction, a method of holding wooden corners together not with nails or screws but rather with intersecting wooden joints. Some furniture also features intricate hand paintings. Much of it contains some kind of “double duty” function that is “good for storage, as well as beauty,” Bristol said. The pieces come with certificates of authenticity and information about the period and location in which they originated. Many times, a craftsman fabricated a piece for a particular person who desired unique little secret doors or cubbyholes, creating even more intrigue. “It adds a sense of history and mystery to a home,” Bristol said. “Other cultures bring such interest to life — a totally different kind of beauty than we have in either traditional or contemporary American furniture Asian objects add a new visual rhythm to the home.” Mountain homeowners sometimes use Asian furniture as accent pieces, sometimes clustering multiple pieces for a stunning effect. For instance, long, narrow altar and painting tables fit well behind oversized sofas. A row of square stools can make a nice sitting area in front of a fireplace, and multiple side tables can enhance a living room scenario. “Kang tables, measuring 20-inches high, also make great coffee tables,” Bristol said.

Framed pieces, such as ancient locks used on chests, or Asian screens, are simple ways to infuse Asian mystery into a home. “You can have a totally modern home or a totally traditional one and give it a little Asian accent with wall pieces,” Bristol said. And, red, yellow or black walls are not necessary to “go Asian.” In fact, most ancient Chinese homes were whitewashed, so the rich, dark furnishings and vibrant statuary Asians used were originally designed to stand out against white. Nancy Sanford, owner of Nancy Sanford Interiors in Vail and Denver, incorporated a lifetime collection of one of her clients’ Asian antiques by building display areas that highlighted the religious symbolism while also melding with surrounding décor and furnishings. She built three layers of cabinets, reinforced with steel, to hold 17th-century statues, backed by grass-cloth wallpaper.

The earthly element of Asian aesthetics helps intertwine Eastern and Western styles. For instance, Sanford’s use of grass-cloth wallpaper complemented the mountain environment not only in terms of its natural fibers, but also with its texture. Likewise, Asian Village sells 18th- and 19thcentury baskets, which add texture throughout a home. “They were an important part of everyday life in China,” Bristol said. “They’ve survived this long — even during the Cultural Revolution — because of their functionality, because they were used. These things go so well in the mountains with their warm, earthy feel.” Asian craftsmanship also complements mountain styles. “The most important is the handmade quality — it’s made from the earth, not machine-made,” Sanford said about both sophisticated Asian and mountain pieces, adding that handmade Asian furniture goes well with chenille fabrics, stone accents and wooden floors, such as the rosewood she used with her Asian collector client. Fine silks also work well, though they tend to be fragile and sensitive to ultraviolet rays, so they make better bedding and pillows than window coverings. “What I love about Asian furnishings, whether it be antique, or current, is they fit into practically any design style,” said Marilyn Heaney, project manager for Slifer Designs in Edwards. Carved wooden furniture with wrought-iron hardware lends itself to a rustic mountain theme, Heaney said. In addition, the “use of dark wood and red high64

lights the feel of the mountains,” Sanford said. “It’s elegant but casual. It intuitively makes sense.” When designing an Asianthemed home, or simply adding Asian accents, homeowners need not stick to only antiques. A plethora of contemporary pieces,
from art to furniture, still maintains traditional craftsmanship and clean lines. The key lies in finding “elements that are simple, with attention to detail,” Bristol said. Asian Village carries handblown glass vases and simple aluminum trays made in America and traditionally crafted tableware from Japan and America. Each item should be placed with clarity of function in mind. For example, a well-placed vase on a table can attract the eye to an expansive mountain view outside a window. In this way, it acts not only as an object of décor, but also one of purpose. “When you enter a house, there are certain things that lead you comfortably in,” Bristol said. “Your path can be enhanced by placement of furniture, and accent pieces can guide your vision.” Ultimately, Asian accents not only highlight the beauty of a home, but they also create a sanctuary, where Eastern tranquility and art meet Western spaciousness and a sense of home sweet home.

ommitments to create and maintain a shipshape home, successful career and happy family often fills more than every minute, so sometimes it’s your own wellness that takes the backseat. Keep your health in check and your jean size, too, simply by integrating fitness into the comforts of your own home. “Every gym user is very unique in their workout regimens, and so it is really important to listen to the client and understand exactly how they intend to use their space,” explains Fiona Edwards, designer for Studio 80 interior design in Eagle. Studio 80 has helped to develop a number of home fitness centers in the area, including one that integrated a custom-designed child play area, made of upholstered tree wall cutouts—a potentially redundant room that was made into a playground for adult fitness and childhood fun. “Behind the wall are tumbling mattresses and blocks, so that the kids can play and expend some energy inside, too,” Edwards explains. Individual needs and desires are very different for everybody, especially when it comes to exercise routines, but creating a home gym gives you free reign to build a fitness facility to cater to the movement of every one of your muscles. “Of all the rooms in a home, this is one of the most customizable, and so the owner should use this to his or her advantage,” Edwards says. Outfit Your Fitness There are a lot of exciting features that can be added to a home gym — all tailored to what you are looking for in your fitness. Comfort should be a key consideration, Edwards explains, as well as being able to control elements such as lighting, window shades, heat and ventilation. Include entertainment

components, especially if you like to have access to television, movies and music during your workouts. Music hookups and remotecontrolled features can be what put that extra “Jock Jam” in your step, or maybe an ambiance that creates a more mellow muscle memory. “Perhaps the room is more of a soothing yoga/meditation space, and needs to reflect this intention with the ability to turn the lights down low and play soothing music,” she says. “If the space is both functional and comfortable, it is more likely that the owner will use it.” Luke Charles, fitness trainer at The Ritz-Carlton resort and residences in Vail, says that a gym, in a home or otherwise, should be like an effective diet: getting the maximum amount of
nutrition per every calorie consumed, just as an efficient daily workout routine can be weighed by energy used (calories burned) — achieved best with the right tools, exercises and motivation. Charles suggests getting a combination of equipment to get your fitness center started. Start by touching all the bases of a well-rounded routine: cardio movement, as well as weight bearing and agility exercises, and perhaps a yoga mat and props, depending on personal regimens. First, find a favorite cardio machine — a treadmill, spin bike, elliptical or rower — whatever will help to bring you the most motivation. Charles says to also to get free weights, a cable machine, Smith machine (a weight training machine with steel rails), and an

Although Edwards says hiring a personal trainer to come to your home is optional, she does recommend investing in structural tools for the room to help you make your program more precise, and, ultimately, effective. “It useful to install purpose designed flooring, such as a rubber surface which will be slip resistant, bacteria resistant and easy to clean,” says Edwards. She also says to include mirrors in the room to check posture, form and technique, while creating the illusion of a bigger area. And if seeing is believing, mirrors are also a great way for individuals
to see their own progress, and to keep them accountable and motivated for their workouts. While lofty fitness goals are always good, home fitness centers are not meant to change your workout routines, but rather to make them more convenient. You can always set reasonable goals, with movements you enjoy, for results that are rewarding for health, wellness, fun and fulfillment. “Be realistic in how you expect to use the space,” Edwards explains. “Don’t put a punch bag in the room if you have never boxed in your life.” Although equipment plays a
key role, design aesthetics are an important element for this space as well. “While the function of a home fitness space is of the utmost importance, don’t overlook its design and decoration,” Edwards says. To set up the space with a great view will be preferable for some, while others may like to personalize the area with inspiring artwork and phrases, or by adding plants, Edwards says. “A drab, uninspirational space is hardly going to entice the owner to use it,” she adds. “A splash of color on the walls can help to energize the room.”

here’s no place like home, especially in the Colorado mountains. The beauty of every season always
makes it easy to nestle in, but winter months are the perfect time to invite the bliss inside.
“To create a cozy feeling upon entering, you must consider many things, starting with the envelope of your home,” explains Terry Mutter, owner of TM Design Inc. in Vail “The finishes on the floors, wall, trim, etc. all tell a story and should be carried throughout the home. Natural elements such as stone and wood, as well as warm paint colors are essential.”
room,” she says. “If you walk into a room and you are kicking things, then there’s too much stuff. Have just enough so that it doesn’t feel bland.” Lorentzen describes creating a cozy home as “trying to draw into a little shell and cuddle up.” She

Wrapped In Warmth
While dim lighting and darker wall colors are the keys to cozy, Lorentzen says the presence of a fire will bring true warmth into the living room. “If you don’t have a fireplace, you can get free-standing fire elements,” she says. “This takes lighting to a whole new level, and fires give rooms a real sense of comfort.”
First Impressions
Mutter says the entrance to your home creates a first impression. In the entryway, she suggests soft lighting and an area rug with warm colors, as well as a few more personal pieces. “A small table highlighting a floral arrangement and a smiling family photo greeting your guests are pleasant ways for them to start the journey,” she says. Liz Lorentzen, designer at Greenauer Design Group in Vail, says a mud room may be necessary, but it should be kept separate from the entryway. If you don’t have a coat closet, you can add hooks and a bench for aesthetic organization. Clutter is much different than cozy, she explains. “I think cozy is when you have just enough accessories to feel like there are things in the

says she always looks to lighting to dictate mood, and that it’s important to be able to drop lighting to make any room more intimate. “If the entrance to a home, or any room in it, has a tall ceiling, you can drop a bigger chandelier to give the impression of a lower ceiling,” she says. “In a mud

should have meaning or memories to the family,” she says. “And candles can add a wonderful sparkle.” Large and comfortable seating sets the tone for quality conversations, and rugs, throws and pillows are all important accessories to create cozy. “It’s good to have warm throws laying around because it’s winter and you’ll want to wrap yourself up,” says Lorentzen. “If you have a place to set things, coffee table books are fun to look at if you have guests in town.”
Culinary Comfort
Mutter calls the kitchen the “heartbeat of the home,” where every sense is actively engaged. “When designing the kitchen, the layout is very important,” she says. “An island provides many opportunities to entertain and to have intimate family time, and a small soft seating area with a fireplace is also really nice to have nearby.” Finishes should be emphasized here as well, Mutter says, as the counter tops, cabinets, flooring, back splash and hardware all provide a backdrop to the feeling of the home. Fabrics in the kitchen can help to soften the space, since it’s filled with an abundance of hardware and kitchen tools. Lorentzen suggests have upholstered chairs or bar seats. “Mix up the materials so there are more textures for the eyes,” she says. “For the windows, you usually can’t have drapery,

but you can do some other type of window shade like Roman shades.” Bowls of fruit and flowers are pieces of life and vitality that can add a nice touch in the kitchen. “Accessories can be used in the kitchen to add character and interest,” says Mutter. “Just make sure it doesn’t get too cluttered.”
Stay A While
Towels and floor mats can give a bathroom ever-changing color options. Lorentzen says to provide warm robes for guests, and to have towel colors that can change with the seasons. “Sometimes, bringing in some kind of natural décor, like flowers, sticks or pine can help to break up the starkness of a bathroom,” she says. Mutter says since almost every guest visits the powder room, it’s important for it to be welcoming and comfortable. “A beautiful mirror and sink are a great way to start,” she explains. “Then add an element of surprise with an interesting sculpture or art piece, or a table with flowers,

candles or artifacts that complement the rest of the house.” “When designing a bedroom or guest room, you must consider who will be in these rooms and then create around age, gender, etc.,” Mutter says. “To make it cozy, you need to add elements that are sensitive to your guests or family members — a nice closet, a fluffy warm bed with beautiful colors on the bedding and window treatments are a perfect start.” Mutter says a chair, lighting and storage are useful items in any bedroom, and accessories and artwork should be meaningful. Lorentzen recommends highlighting a favorite piece of art by using it to develop a color scheme in a room. “You can always paint a bathroom or bedroom a warmer color,” she adds. “Sometimes, people are afraid to go too dark, but if you pick a color a little farther down the chart it can be nice. Darker colors can make rooms seem smaller, but when you are trying to create cozy, that’s what you want.”
