These days, luxury-home owners prefer more unique kitchen countertops than the granite they’ve seen for about a decade in home after home. “Granite has become very common, so people are looking for something different,” said Deb Davis, co-owner of

Select Surfaces in Avon. She said today’s homeowners desire more contemporary, solid designs, with clean looks, as opposed to the veins and “busyness” that characterize granite. Fortunately, there are plenty of options on the market, from composites to metal and glass.
Quartz composites These days, many Vail Valley homeowners opt for quartz composites. These countertops are man-made of 90-95 percent of ground quartz — the strongest element found in natural granite slabs.
But the biggest draw for demand stems from the fact that various manufacturers, like Cambria, Zodiaq and Silestone, each offer more than 40 colors and styles. And unlike granite, which contains veining and other natural occurring elements that can look “busy,”

rather than simple and modern, quartz composites remain consistent in color and any pattern a homeowner may choose. “That is where the push is really going into — the solid surface,” said Anita Harvey, office manager of AG Masonry, which serves the Vail Valley. But like any countertop, quartz composites come with pros and cons. They lend a sleek, modern look to homes (and homeowners can easily see any spots that need cleaning, whereas sometimes kitchen grime can remain hidden within granite designs). They’re relatively maintenance free, not requiring any sealants upon, or after, installation. Some come in larger slabs than granite, because the material flexes a bit more, so installers may be able to get away with fewer seams, depending upon a kitchen’s design. And, many quartz countertops earn certification for their low VOCs (volatile organic compounds) from the GreenGuard Environmental Institute, an independent agency that measures chemical emissions. The downside: 5 to 10 percent of the product contains resins, which cannot tolerate heat. That means homeowners must be careful about placing any hot pans or plates onto the counter. The resins are also petroleum based, and most companies mine or manufacture their products outside the United States, accord-

However, Cambria is a family-owned company that both mines and makes its countertops in the United States. Glass While homeowners have incorporated glass into backsplashes to add extra flair for years, many are taking the shiny material to a new level by installing full glass countertops; in fact, glass countertops are some of the
most exquisite, high-end products available for kitchens. Thick glass countertops are non-porous, making them resistant to stains and bacteria. Pure glass countertops tend to result in an open and uncluttered kitchen appearance. Homeowners can choose a glossy, contemporary finish, imbedded texture finishes or colored glass, oftentimes, in which manufacturers paint the glass on its underside. Installing LED lights enhances the aesthetics of glass. White

lighting, as well as hues like cold white, red, amber, fuchsia, blue, cyan and green add a whole new dimension to your kitchen countertop, raised bar or both. For an environmentally friendly version, Vetrazzo produces recycled glass countertops, made of 85 percent glass and 15 percent modified Portland White Cement. The composite resists damage more than natural stones like soapstone or marble. But, if you’re looking for a uniform look, recycled glass products may not be the way to go; random pieces of glass that differ from the main slab are the norm, so it’s best to view an entire specific slab before committing to it. Like granite or any solid surface, glass can chip, though manufacturers boast a durability that rivals other common countertops. Copper and zinc Copper countertops can add a warmer look than stainless steel in kitchens, and, like zinc, they are naturally antibacterial. Copper and zinc are often hammered for extra texture, and then fused to wood. One quality of the metals includes their patina; over time, their appearance transforms in sheen and color. Though homeowners can’t prevent acidic foods and etching from discoloring the cooper, they can apply a light coat of olive oil to minimize stains. Zinc also reacts to everything from water and fingerprints to acidic foods like lemon and tomatoes. The

soft metal is also prone to dents and scratches. Many homeowners embrace these ever-changing patterns, which can actually make the countertop look like it’s decades old, rather than months old, but if you’re looking or a polished look, consider another material. Oftentimes, copper and zinc countertops contain fewer seams than stone slabs, because installers can integrate natural breaks into cooktops, sinks and corners. However, it’s important to know that at about 8 feet, copper can begin to distort more easily. Marble Marble and limestone make gorgeous countertops, but like copper and zinc, they’re finicky, and not as durable as granite or quartz composites when it comes to scratches and stains. “A lot of people want marble, but it’s not recommended, because it’s so porous,” Harvey said. “It soaks up stains and oils.” But for careful cooks, marble may still be a solid option. And, choosing a matte (less shiny) finish can make the patina look quite interesting. In marble’s clean, shiny form, it definitely dresses up kitchens. Though marble has some natural veins and variations, many slabs provide a bright,

white, classic look not available in granite or soapstone. Marble is also a pastry chef’s dram: It’s naturally cool and doesn’t conduct heat well, so rolling out dough is a breeze. Builders have used limestone in floors and wall tile for decades, but just recently have they begun installing limestone countertops. Homeowners embrace the look for its muted quality; the earthy, muted tones allow it to blend in naturally with other décor. Limestone offers a fairly wide range of colors and textures, and installers can mold it more easily than other countertop materials. The downside is, like wood, limestone is porous. That means scratches and stains can build up, especially if the countertops aren’t sealed properly, and hot pots will scorch the surface. Plus, citrus, vinegars and other acids wreak havoc. Like marble, honed finishes, which actually resemble what limestone looks like when it’s quarried, hide imperfections better than polished limestone. After studying the pros and cons of each, it all comes down to one thing, as R.C. Bailey, of Mr. B Countertops, points out: Personal preference.

LATIN LOVERS The village plays an enormous role in creating a sense of community, an essential aspect of Latin American culture.

For decades, Vail has been a popular destination for Latin Americans. People like Eustaquio Cortina’s uncle and father-in-law, originally from Mexico, were some of the first to recognize Vail’s appeal. They came to Vail when the mountain first opened, but because it was such a small town, particularly one without a clinic, they ended up helping develop Aspen. A couple years later, once Vail Valley Medical Center firmly established itself, they returned to Vail “because of the nature of the small town,” Cortina said. “Even though Vail was underdeveloped, there was interest (from Mexicans),” said Ric Soto, who grew up in Cuba and specializes in the Latin market at Slifer, Smith and Frampton. Vail Mountain, with its quality terrain and snow, was always the No. 1 attraction, Cortina said, but eventually, its village, with more restaurants, stores and activities, made Vail even more sought-after. “When Vail (was first) established, its base with the Mexican population really began to blossom,” said Michael Slevin of Prudential Colorado Properties. As Vail grew, visitors from other Spanish-speaking countries began to introduce their families and friends to Vail. Wordof-mouth played an important role in Vail’s expansion, because activities, including where to vacation, revolve around extended family and friends. “They say, ‘Let’s go skiing,’ and

For example, last year, it spon-
sored a travel expo in Uruguay to help spread the word. Village ease Beyond the mountain, a few other factors play into Vail’s popularity in the Latin American market. To begin with, easy accessibility, with direct flights from Miami to Eagle County Airport, as well as one-stop routes through Dallas and Houston, make Vail

a practical place to vacation. Its safety also plays a large role. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a sense of security,â&#x20AC;? Cortina said, explaining how kids can conveniently catch a bus to ski or see a movie with their friends. â&#x20AC;&#x153;In Mexico, everything is so difficult. Friends live far away â&#x20AC;&#x201D; one can be in the south and one can be in the north â&#x20AC;&#x201D; in Vail, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s just a bus (ride) away.â&#x20AC;? The residents and merchants of Vail also have encouraged Latin Americans by befriending them. â&#x20AC;&#x153;What Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve heard over and over and over is how welcome they feel and how they feel appreciated here by staff and business owners,â&#x20AC;? Soto said. In general, Vailâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s big picture, from the people to the activities, draws Latin Americans. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Recreation outside of skiing â&#x20AC;&#x201D; the shopping and dining â&#x20AC;&#x201D; it all equates to as great a vacation experience as you can have ... the wonderful boutiques and restaurants cater to affluent clientele â&#x20AC;Ś there is a sophistication thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s matched by the clientele.â&#x20AC;? And, like many other ski resorts, the townâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s summer appeal has expanded, with activities ranging from golf
and biking to family friendly-festivals and live music. What Latin Americans bring While Vail has provided its beauty, recreation, safety and accessibility to Latin Americans, the population also has contributed to the Vail Valley, both socially and economically. In terms of dollars, the Latin American community tends to spend a large amount in restaurants, shops and property. Soto said they contribute well to the economy when vacationing because they eat out every day. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a very obvious financial impact,â&#x20AC;? he said, adding that itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s more noticeable because theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re probably the largest international group. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The Latin Americans and Mexicans have invested in Vail; itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a significant part of the market,â&#x20AC;? Cortina said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;They go more to good restaurants. They like to purchase good quality of everything. Theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re not the Walmarts. Theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re not the brown baggers who bring lunch to the mountain. They like to go out to the mountain and enjoy.â&#x20AC;? But itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s much more than the positive financial impact that locals enjoy; itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s the Latin Americans themselves. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s beautiful to see the congregation of family and friends coming to Vail to reignite friendships,â&#x20AC;? Slevin said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;It adds a wonderful dimension of culture. It brings diversity to the community, and I think thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s quite healthy.â&#x20AC;? In addition to vacationing Latinos, he also sees more families from Latin America staying and raising their kids. â&#x20AC;&#x153;It has transformed even the way the schools look. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a nice mix,â&#x20AC;? he said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;It brings culture â&#x20AC;Ś It provides new perspectives in a world where weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re all connected.â&#x20AC;?

When Vail Mountain opened in December of 1962 there were two ski-lifts, nine ski runs, and $5 would buy a lift ticket. The Vail Valley’s real estate market is mirroring the nation’s with increasing sales and decreasing number of properties for sale. The National Association of REALTORS® announced a 4.5 percent increase in the January Pending Home Sales Index over December and a 9.5 percent increase over January 2012. The pending sales index is forward looking indicator of the United States housing market produced by the National Association of REALTORS®. The Colorado Association of REALTORS® recently released information showing a continued recovery of the real estate markets in the state’s mountain resort communities. Vail and Beaver Creek are among the most sought-after communities as inventories of available real estate and the time properties spend on the market continue to decline. Beaver Creek desirable to those seeking to buy a vacation home? The answers are likely as diverse as the people who call Vail and Beaver Creek their second home. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The Vail Valley has continued to provide a great guest experience for decades,â&#x20AC;? says Chris Romer, President and CEO of the Vail Valley Partnership. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Net promoter scores taken from guests continue to rise, lending credence to the activities, events, and overall experiences that we provide. Our most recent economic study, which came out at the end of February, shows positive growth for the Vail Valley on virtually all metrics that we track.â&#x20AC;? The Vail and Beaver Creek brands are strong, and are truly household names among mountain-resort enthusiasts. Vail and Beaver Creek: Pioneers in family ski fun By Kimberly Nicoletti
n the 1980s, the owners of Vail Resort had a “goofy” vision: partner with Disney to bring costumed characters, including Sport Goofy, and family fun to ski resorts. By 1986, they began touring with Sport Goofy and other characters throughout the East, introducing families to the ski culture in cities like Baltimore, Philadelphia and New York. At home, the theatrical characters played with kids in ski school and on the mountain. The kids’ characters acted as one of those “intangibles,” which makes all the difference in a family ski vacation. “(Vail owners) were insightful enough to see it’s more than the bottom line,” said Brian Hall, who has partnered with the resort by working with theatrical kids’ productions, through his company Blue Creek Productions. “The intangibles can build strong memories, which has made them successful … (kids) form a kinship to Vail because they’re involved, they’re invested and they have great memories.”

Vail adventure “Families have always been a big part of the Vail experience, both on and off the mountain,” said Sara Lococo, a spokesperson for Vail. “Families reconnect and celebrate here year after year and generation after generation, so it’s important to provide a well-rounded experience for kids and adults in order for the whole family to make the most out of their time together in Vail.” One way Vail ensures families get in enough playtime is through Adventure Ridge, a mountain amusement park that offers tubing, ski biking, kids’ snowmobiling, ice skating, snowshoeing, a bungee trampoline, nature nights, a family-oriented restaurant and more. Adventure Ridge opened in 1996, creating a hub where families can experience winter activities beyond skiing.

“They were the first to ever do this — now they all do this, design and build interactive fun zones,” Hall said. In addition to keeping hardy skiers and riders active after the lifts close, Adventure Ridge introduces the excitement of snow to plenty of people who have never seen the frozen white stuff before, said general manager Jeff Althage. One kid who lingers in Althage’s memory is Blake, who grew up in Florida. “Blake was unfortunately sick with cancer … and he had never been on the snow before, so we took him to Adventure Ridge to go tubing for the first time,” Althage said. “He was thrilled to be in Vail and on the snow, and was grinning from ear to ear as he lapped the tubing lanes.” The tubing experience includes lively music and a covered lift that sweeps people up the hill, before they come careening down. “I think what kids love most about Adventure Ridge is that they get to have fun independently,” Althage said. “They can be set free to enjoy the activities, and parents can be at ease knowing our attendants are keeping a watchful eye on everything. Kids may come from ski school, 46

where they’re being instructed on what to do all day, and at Adventure Ridge, they are able to just let loose and have fun.” And, like all good family attractions, Adventure Ridge doesn’t just cater to kids. Tubing allows parents to join in on the adrenaline rush in a safe manner, and ski biking has become a favorite activity for parents. And even guests who aren’t parents can’t help but love watching little kids jump on a mini snowmobile, built just for little tykes, and
safety, from chairlift operators helping little kids onto chairs, to the mountain safety team working “to make every aspect of skiing and snowboarding at Vail a world-class experience, even for the youngest guests,” Lococo said. “Families can ride the lift together to the top, choose their own way down, and find the whole group back at the bottom of the same lift, ready to do it all over again.” Nine Kids Adventure Zones spread across the front side of

cruise the Blizzard Speedway. “Adventure Ridge definitely takes the stress out of what to do with kids on vacation,” Althage said. Of course, Vail’s family experience doesn’t begin, or end, with Adventure Ridge. Vail employees are trained to infuse fun with
the mountain. Wooden corbels or archways mark the entrances, which lead youngsters in and out of trees, around banked corners and through features like Coyote’s Den, a 50-footlong teepee-like structure. “It’s important for a place like Vail Mountain to provide
the same amount of excitement for kids that it does for adults,” Lococo said. Off the mountain, families can remain active with everything from bowling or visiting the Colorado Ski and Snowboard Museum to eating at family-friendly restaurants like Blue Moose Pizza and Cinebistro, where guests can enjoy dinner and a movie. Beaver Creek loves kids Over the holidays, Winterfest transformed Beaver Creek into a winter wonderland. Old Man Winter helped kids’ wishes come true with his wish stick, while elves frolicked about with characters like the Snow Dragon. The theatrical event captured nearly every kids’ imagination, and a few kids even became stars on stage. Such was the case with a little boy, who was just about 3 years old. Every day, he visited Hall, checking out Winterlund as it evolved. On the fifth day, Hall went up to the boy and asked him what he was eating. “A PanCake,” the boy replied, munching on his crepe as he “popped” his “P” and over-annunciated the “C.” He kept repeating “PanCake,” so Hall took the opportunity to create some improv theater.

“Hey, would you like to help me tell a story?” Hall asked. When the boy agreed, he lifted him onto the ledge of the stage and began to tell a story about a boy who loved to eat pancakes. Hall peppered the story generously with the word “pancake,” each time letting the boy say the word into the microphone. Of course, the little boy lived happily ever after, eating — that’s right — “PanCakes.” The story entertained about 60 spectators. “Little things like that happen all the time,” Hall said about his time with kids at Beaver Creek. “Those type of moments, you can’t (force). You have to have the right situation, the right atmosphere, the right scenario.” Hall “sets the stage,” so to speak, for the magic to happen, but only authentic love for kids allows “buy in.” “Vail and Beaver Creek
sincerely want to help families have a good time,” Hall said. “They have a long-term commitment to do it, to do it well and to do it consistently for the life of their resort.” Over President’s Weekend, Hall witnessed a group of 30 Russians screaming “Yea, USA!” and taking pictures with the Prezfest characters, including Teddy Roosevelt and Uncle Sam. Now Hall is gearing up for Springfest, which begins with Irish music and dancers celebrating St. Patrick’s Day and continues with oversized flowers and giant ladybugs and spiders on stage. The second week harkens back to simpler days, when hula hoop contests, pie eating and water balloon tosses ruled the day. The festival ends with the Easter Bunny and a huge Easter egg hunt. Even when festivals aren’t taking place, Beaver Creek’s central village makes it conducive to

Weekly family programming offers something new every day of the week, from disco skating and Tuesday afternoon snowshoe tours to Thursday Night Lights, a glow-stick ski down followed by fireworks. “Beaver Creek Loves Kids and Beaver Creek Loves Teens Too took off and have grown tremendously over the past few years after recognizing that as a resort we had an even greater opportunity to animate the village and provide families with even more memorable experiences during peak times and typically the only time schoolage kids can visit,” Brown said. To make skiing easier, ski school and other amenities have been strategically located. And, Beaver Creek’s Ski School “is known as the Ivy League of ski schools,” said spokesperson Jen Brown, pointing out that instructors speak a variety of languages and specialty programs (like Ski Girls Rock), as well as the Buckaroo Gondola, which whisks kids to specially contoured terrain to facilitate learning. Ripperoo entertains kids while parents register them for classes during peak times. Beaver Creek also offers
beginner terrain on top of the mountain, so kids can get a full mountain experience. And, like Vail, Beaver Creek offers a tubing hill, as well as Marmot Maze. On and off the hill, staff members go the extra mile to help families, from giving directions and providing sunscreen and tissues to carrying kids’ skis. “A ski vacation can be a bit cumbersome, so they try to make it easy to get you, your children and their gear to the slopes,” Hall said. “It’s all hands on deck after a ski day to help you get back to your car or condo so the whole thing is fun.” And, of course, there’s the infamous cookie time, when both kids and adults get free chocolate chip cookies at the end of the day. (They go through 500,000 cookies a year.) Ambassadors also hand out postcards — and even mail them for guests. “When building a resort, yes, you have buildings, golf courses, restaurants and ski terrain, but what you’re really building are experiences,” Hall said. “If you neglect the personal touch — the entertainment for kids — then you’re not going all the way … Vail and Beaver Creek have a sincere desire to spend time with families.”

“Perfect” is a tall order when it comes to any room in a house, especially the room that serves as everyone’s main hangout. It’s an even taller order for a house of people that occupy any given room. “What makes the perfect family room? I guess the perfect family,” jokes Eddy Doumas, Principal Designer at Worth Interiors. “OK, so maybe no family is perfect … but you need a group of people who like to hang out together. Otherwise you’d be planning family rooms with 10-foot-straight vertical couches with people sitting at either end.” Luckily designers build family rooms for people that at least try to like each other. This means that the first thing to consider is how many people will be hanging out there, and in the spirit of harmony, each individual should have ample space. Head count/seat count “You want to make sure you have really comfortable seating for however many people are going to be using the space. You don’t want to pack people in,” says Dallas Lyon of Lyon Design Group. “But the furniture needs to be comfortable for the space.” Comfort is the overarching theme for the family room, in which case, you don’t want four people wedged onto the center couch. “It’s important everyone has their own seat, a cushion on the sectional, a spot for everybody and hopefully not too many middle spots. Nobody wants to sit in the middle one,” Doumas points out. “The corner of the sectional where two people can cuddle up is obviously the prime

spot, but you want everyone to have a comfortable seat.” Obviously you can’t have too many couches and a room full of cozy arms chairs would resemble a therapy group. Local designers are big fans of sectional couches in the family room; however, abundant as they are and as classy as they look, leather sectionals are at the bottom of the list. Don’t overdo the leather “Leather can be cold. You kind of slide around on it. It doesn’t have as much give as a fabric cushion,” Lyon says. “When I sit down to watch a movie, I want to be comfortable. I want to feel like I’m in my bed. A leather base on the sectional or leather pillows can be OK. I might do
a couple of leather chairs. But a big leather sectional is not as comfortable as a soft fabric one.” While most people agree that plush cushions you can sink into are more comfortable than sticky leather, everyone’s idea of comfort is different, which lends itself to a wide berth when building any room in the couch. In the family room, however, another element of comfort comes in the ability to have places to set your munchies. “For a comfortable family room, you want to throw in the interesting and different side tables, coffee tables — a convenient place to have snacks and drinks,” says Vicki Glotzer, Design Director for Worth Homes.

Snack space Naturally, you don’t want the person sitting in the armchair in the corner, passing his or her bowl of popcorn over to a spot on the only coffee table. Much like a place to sit, everyone needs their own little area to spread out. Keeping with the theme of comfort, when it comes to coffee tables, elegant and fragile are not great characteristics for the centerpiece of the family room. “Coffee tables need to be pretty sturdy,” Doumas says. “Not only are people drinking and munching on them, but they put their feet up so I would avoid glass. Big ottomans with trays are nice, too.” Lights and action You’re watching a movie, playing Monopoly, cards or trivia and it’s obvious. You want to put your feet up.

Ottomans, loveseats, the coveted corner on the sectional, even a recliner (they’re making a comeback) — family rooms need to be built for stretching out. They also need to be designed for an assortment of activities — knitting, watching a movie or having a romantic glass of wine — each of which lends itself to a specific kind of lighting situation. “You want to have two or three lighting options,” Lyon says. “You want to be able to dim the lights if you want to watch a movie, make them brighter if you’re playing games, you want to be flexible.” Flexible lighting also means
more than one light switch and preferably indirect lighting. “The windows can help out in the day time if you’re fortunate to have a lot of outside light, otherwise it’s nice to have a boom floor lamp. Dimmable lights are crucial,” Glotzer says. If the family room is hosting an all-day movie marathon, blackout shades are necessary for the windows. Also, when it comes to movie-watching, speakers, surround sound and all other forms of media, don’t forget that the family room is the pulse and true hub of the entire house, so you don’t want

to scrimp on your electronics. “If you’re watching movies, you could be in there for hours. The electronics need to be up-to-date and state-of-the-art. If you have a big screen TV and surround sound, you want to make sure it’s good quality and professionally installed,” says Lyon, who works with a handful of wiring specialists for exactly that. She also tends to throw a dark color or two into her painting scheme to add to the coziness, sometimes in unexpected places. Color schemes “It’s about tying it all together,” she explains. “A red ceiling is pretty risky. I take more risks with color and paint because most people are afraid of color. If you’re going to do it, balance it with the room, so the colors have a red in it. The family room that I did the red ceiling in was a really large space with no windows and a flat ceiling. The built-in on the wall-to-wall with copper accents was the focal point of the room. The color has a grounding effect. It’s not like you walk in and say, ‘oh my God, the ceiling is red.’” Lyon says she prefers built-ins
to wall-mounted media setups in order to keep all the media nicely contained in one unit. Regardless of your personal preference, the television and/or a fireplace is the focal point of the family room and all the furniture should be appropriately configured around it. All eyes this way … “Some rooms will have a fireplace, so if you can incorporate the TV into the same space as the fireplace, that’s a great set up,” Glotzer says. “Sometimes you don’t have that luxury. Let’s say you have a fireplace in a corner of a room. You have to think how can you arrange the TV or media area close enough to the fireplace.” Finally, speaking of focal points, there should not be too many. The family heirlooms and historic gaudy centerpieces, for example, are better kept in a great room or living room. “No knickknacks on the coffee table or unnecessary decorations,” Lyon says. “Remember, the key theme is comfort. You want to have a couple of ottomans you can float around, some soft throws and pillows.” Aesthetically pleasing and flowing nicely with other rooms are, of course, desirable characteristics in a family room. But more than any other place, keep in mind that you’re going to be spending a whole lot of time relaxing here. “The family room is pretty much the most used space in the home next to the kitchen,” Doumas says. “You want a sense of entry and a striking great room, but where you’re really living is the top priority.”

The innovators idway through a conversation about his architectural philosophy and artistic influences, local architect Jack Snow spoke about getting his pilot’s license so he could fly a plane to his new work sites, which now extend far beyond the Vail Valley. He offered a few matter-of-fact reasons to explain why having a pilot’s license was necessary to his career, but the excitement in his voice belied such practicality. Sure, flying a plane allows Snow to get from point A to point B. But one gets the sense that this man’s work benefits far more from seeing the earth from a different perspective than from the increased mobility flying allows him as a busy architect trying to get quickly from one job site to another. The swooping lines and smooth, sculpted forms that surface in his work give that sense, as well. Snow and his wife, Sally Brainerd, established RKD Architects, Inc. in Vail in 1989. Since then, the small firm has designed numerous innovative residential and commercial spaces in the Vail Valley, Summit County and beyond — Tahoe, Telluride, Big Sky, San Francisco and Edina, Minnesota, to name a few. What doesn’t emerge in these projects is an established style; rather, what surfaces in them is the work of a person who ideologically puts a few sticks of dynamite next to an established style and lets it explode into an artistic frenzy.

“I torture every carpenter as much as I can,” Snow jokes, talking about his penchant for sloping walls and sculpted, flowing forms. “RKD’s tagline is ‘sculpted from the elements,’ and even though we’re coming up with novel things, none of it is unrecognizable or in your face in an off-putting way. A final product might be something that no one’s ever thought of or seen before, but you look at it and think: that just fits here.” Creating spaces that fit within their natural surroundings is a hallmark of RKD’s design, and Snow cites British sculptor Andy Goldsworthy as one of his inspirations in this regard. Goldsworthy considers “raw nature” his artistic medium, often creating works out of stones or leaves or sand, knowing that they will eventually be whisked away by waves or dispersed by the wind. RKD builds its clients’ wants and needs into its designs, but Snow also seeks to create something that’s site-specific and fitting within its environmental context. The Green Fin House in Edina,
Minnesota exemplifies RKD’s sculpted-from-the-elements ethic and Snow’s unique artistic approach. His genius sketch of the home and its environmentally-friendly, or “green,” features are what give the Green Fin House its name. Snow scratched some simple black lines on a piece of white paper to represent his idea for the place. What emerged in his conception of this tear down, re-build home is a stunningly balanced form with angled glass walls — and what looks like a huge, sculpted fin cutting a path to the front door. The Green Fin Home is stocked with an array of innovative, environmentally-minded features including a solar hot-water system, a cistern system for irrigating the yard and a green roof for conserving water and growing herbs and vegetables. The masonry for the home was sourced locally, and the wood on the floor and ceilings was reclaimed from a flooded forest and recycled from old whisky barrels, respectively. Snow, who also designs furniture, often juxtaposes heavy
and light elements in his work. In the Green Fin home, chunky stone walls bump up against enormous, slanting walls of glass. And in his Rocky Mountain Residence, a curved wood terrace lightens the heaviness of the exterior’s concrete blocks, bringing to mind the sculpted elegance of an Eames chair. Although each of his homes morph into strikingly different structures, Snow admits that a common DNA defines them. The nucleotide bases for his designs aren’t adenine, cytosine, guanine, and thymine; his double helix depends instead on sculpture, balance, natural harmony and an evocative spirit. BEYOND THE YODEL Kyle Webb of the Vail-based K.H. Webb architecture firm also is moving beyond what he considers to be an established style in order to embrace the things that define his work: a natural palette of materials; a clean, of-the-land approach; and site-appropriate design. “Everyone has some idea about what architects in the mountains

scious effort overall, and we try to see what people are willing to do. The solution might cost more in the short term, but the end result feels better for everyone.” should be doing,” says Webb. “But I don’t think that every building around here needs to yodel. We take the time to get to know our clients and have realized that people are coming to us because they’re innovators, too. They want a home that takes them beyond what’s typical for this area.” Webb’s current work extends from Nicaragua to Los Angeles to Connecticut, but he still enjoys the freedom of working within the limits of the Town of Vail, which has more relaxed codes than other planned communities in the area. In this way, Webb avoids creating within the bounds of a clearly-defined or homogeneous style to craft one unique home after another. And at the heart of each project, Webb puts his respect for the land first. “Sustainability starts with how we treat our sites,” Webb says. “We could cut into the land and pump it full of concrete, but whenever possible, I try to create something that fits within its natural surroundings. I look at what’s there and then maximize the land instead of cramming a pre-planned design onto a space that it doesn’t fit.” With such an ethic in mind, Webb has concocted several inventive solutions. In a Vail home named 2010 Home of the Year by Mountain Living magazine, Webb designed
a living room that seems to leap from the backside of the house. A cantilevered terrace juts out towards a wide-open view of the Gore Range and extends over a swimming pool. But he didn’t just design the home this way because it would look cool. He invented these features as a way to build around a tricky slope on the lot without leveling it. Webb admits that while the word sustainability seems to be en vogue, it’s something he’s always embraced. And it’s ultimately up to clients to determine how far they’re willing to go. “We ask them what they want. And if it’s more natural light, more solar gain, green or recycled materials, or any other
LESS IS MORE In his effort to create functional, livable spaces, architect Mike Foster has seen a shift from the “bigger is better” mentality towards a focus on smaller, more intimate homes that contain the same — or an even higher — level of detail than that of their much larger predecessors. Foster began working with the Vail-based Triumph Development in 2007 to complete The Willows, a 19-unit condominium project. He worked with the initial design but then remained involved with the project until all of the owners moved in. Foster found it highly rewarding and insightful from a design perspective to be involved with a project from the time that the first

environmentally-conscious effort, we’re right there with them,” Web says. This attitude has allowed him to design homes that reclaim gray water for irrigation and use an array of local, reclaimed and recycled materials. “We make a con-

The Town of Vail, Vail Valley Medical Center, The Steadman Clinic and the Steadman Philippon Research Institute (SPRI) hired Triumph to develop a new municipal building in Vail that will house chambers for the Town Council and municipal offices, a new medical office building for Vail Valley Medical Center, The Steadman Clinic and SPRI. Foster will be the project’s managing architect, and he envisions a new pedestrian bridge that will connect doctors with their examination rooms in the new building and their operating tables across the road at the Vail Valley Medical Center. From Mike Foster’s less-ismore sentiment to Kyle Webb’s site-specific designs to Jack Snow’s sculpted, elemental forms, one common theme emerges. Each of these architect-innovators takes a single, simple idea and transforms it into a singular reality. Each in his own way, these architects embody what pioneering French pilot, artist, and writer Antoine de Saint-Exupéry meant when he said, “Perfection is achieved not when there is nothing more to add, but when there is nothing left to take away.”
