We might live on the other side of the world from Asia, but when it comes to interior design, Chinese- and Japanese-inspired décor can be found in stores and homes from coast to coast. “A big trend today is for clean lines and minimalist design as opposed to overstuffed furniture,” says Julie Holzman of Holzman Interiors in New York. “That simplified look lends itself to incorporating modern Asian elements.” While Asian design has been around for centuries, the latest boost in popularity may be due to the increase in international travel by Americans. “People are seeing firsthand how beautiful other cultures’ influences can be,” says Olga Adler, an interior designer and owner of Olga Adler Interiors, based in Connecticut. “As a result, they are much more open to bringing items with a global influence into their own home.” Each Asian country now has a wide range of current styles that mirror other nations – but the tra-

Komal Sheth of Spaces Designed, an interior design firm in New York. “The deep and rich tones balanced with elements of nature bring happiness and peace to a home, giving it great flow and comfort.” Décor Elements While different Asian countries have different design elements, there are some features that are viewed as classically Asian. “Red and black lacquer is one of the more obvious trademarks of Asian décor,” Adler says. “The lacquer happens when furniture is coated in layer upon layer of paint, resulting in a very shiny finish.” There are also a lot of nature-related themes. “Bamboo furniture is really popular, whether it’s real bamboo or
another type of wood that’s carved to look like bamboo stalks,” Adler says. “And silks that have floral patterns, like cherry blossoms, are typically used throughout the entire home.” Getting the Look Done wrong, an overload of Asian décor can make the style feel forced. “An ethnic influence is best when hinted at,” says Jim Walters, designer at J.P. Walters Design in San Diego. “Introduce an Asian element with a few pieces of furniture, wall décor, garden accents or tabletop accessories.” Just two or three items can give an entire room an Asian feeling. “Think about adding accessories, like a hand-painted silk screen or small lacquered jewelry box,” Adler suggests.
Plan Your Luxury Vacation With Us Today “Or maybe a small glazed garden stool that is used indoors as a side table.” Restraint is important, Adler warns. “It’s not about making your room look like the Asian wing of a museum; it’s about weaving elements into your existing décor so that it looks effortless.” Because Asian décor is so recognizable, one or two wellpicked pieces can give the whole room a different personality. “Change up accessories, say by hanging up a scroll with Chinese characters on a wall or adding pillows with a bold red Asian pattern on them to your sofa,” Holzman says. “They are inexpensive swaps but give the room a very Asian look.” Choosing a Style With its eclectic look,
Asian-inspired décor is perfect for mixing and matching. “Try using an Oriental rug as a way to ground your space,” Sheth says. “This will lead you in the right direction of color, pattern and texture without you making every piece in the room have an Asian influence.” Each Asian country has its unique style, so use your own home’s existing décor to help choose which Asian influence to adopt. “If you live in a modern, minimalist home, look at Japanese décor that tends to be more simple and streamlined,” Adler suggests. “If, on the other hand, you have a more traditional home, Chinese furniture and accessories tend to be more ornate.” © CTW Features

Lay the Foundation After you have a budget and wish list, there are several design stages and elements to consider that differ from indoor kitchen design. The first is the foundation. An existing patio made of level concrete or stone may provide adequate support for all the appliances without any structural changes. A deck, on the other hand, may need additional support for a safe installation. Consider location and climate to determine your foundation and construction technique. A local builder or contractor should have a better idea of how much supported is needed. For instance, in the Chicago area, Tim Rourke of EdgeBrick Outdoor Kitchens uses sturdy brick-and-mortar construction, with footings to the frost line. “In some climates, you can just build a frame and attach brick laminate,” he says. Materials and Layout Some manufacturers are putting faux-wood grains on stainless steel cabinets, while others, like NatureKast, make cabinets out of high-density resin that has “the rich look of real wood without all the maintenance,” says Jean Ehmke, founder, JeanE Kitchen and Bath Design, Raleigh, N.C. A polished countertop will reveal every water spot, “so go for a flat or weathered finish,” Ehmke advises.
Hursthouse advises against black countertops, which will get too hot in the sun. The heat is a factor for grills, too. Incorporate shade trees or shade structures as well as “creature comforts” like overhead fans and misters, he says. “Design the space so people can interact with the person cooking or grilling,” Hursthouse says, keeping in mind that grills generate heat and smoke. Appliance Applications When designing an outdoor kitchen, the first steps are determining your budget and which appliances fit in with your lifestyle.

West Vail “Any appliances short of a microwave that you have inside, we can put outside,” Hursthouse says. “They make pizza ovens and kegerators and even outdoor deep fryers. But choose appropriately. Don’t put a double oven outside if you don’t use the one inside.” The required seasonal maintenance on certain outdoor appliances may make you think twice about including them. While many come with guarantees, expect to replace corroded or worn-out parts every few years. In colder climates, appliances hooked to waterlines, such as sinks and dishwashers, must be winterized.
Indoor-Outdoor Flow While an outdoor kitchen can feel like a getaway, don’t forget how the space interacts with the indoors. For instance, “You don’t want to look out the window and see this big grill obstructing your great garden space,” Hursthouse says. Access is important, too, considering how much prep work is done inside. Hursthouse recommends a French door and a landing, if the door leads to steps. “If you’re not careful, you might fall and end up with your face in a platter of ribs,” he says. © CTW Features

PUT IT ON THE SHELF Custom libraries are deeply personal collections of books that reflect their owners’ interests and passions. By Kelly Paton

Books are transformative — a room filled with them can be a magical place. The word library, to most, conjures up the image of a large building filled with countless volumes on all subjects and librarians shushing overly talkative patrons. But for some the word evokes the image of a favorite room. And though we live in a world where reading a book increasingly means

doing so on an e-reader or tablet, there are still many people to whom the physical collection of books is an essential part of life. Movies and television would lead us to believe that a private library is a dusty collection of tomes housed in a museum-like room in a home of Gatsby-esque opulence. But a private library can take on any number of forms, from a prized set of titles that
is treated with the utmost care to a much-used and well-worn collection of children’s books. It may exist in a central room of the home or office, or it might spread throughout the entire house and even across multiple locations. Private libraries may be as small as just a few books, or they may be made up of many thousands. At its core, the cultivation of a private library is driven by
one of two motivations: a passion for reading and the written word or the desire to create a certain aesthetic in the home. While these two motivations are not mutually exclusive by any means, someone who is truly passionate about a particular subject or author may not necessarily be concerned that the spines of the books on the shelf are all in the same color family.

American novelist Walter Mosely said, “a man’s bookcase will tell you everything you’ll ever need to know about him,” which is a view shared by Nicole Magistro, owner and book buyer at The Bookworm of Edwards. “When you walk into someone’s home and you can see their book collection, you can learn a lot about them,” Magistro muses from the cozy café within The Bookworm, the Vail Valley’s most notable community bookseller. Magistro and her team work with clients to cultivate content-centric private libraries in a number of ways: adding books to an existing collection, assisting people in building a personal library from scratch or working with corporate clients to build libraries in a place of business, such as the library in the lobby of the Westin Riverfront Resort & Spa in Avon. For Magistro, the most important part of the process is sitting down with clients to understand their goals for the library. “Our expertise is really being able to help people focus on what titles they want to make their library meaningful and part of who they are — a reflection of what their reading or intellectual life is,” Magistro says. Magistro’s clients are all passionate about reading, but that is often where the similarities end. Each library is a unique collection of titles that reflects the particular interests of its owners. Eagle resident GiGi Barrie’s home library is comprised of more than 7,500 books, and that number is still growing. As an artist, Barrie’s collection consists of a large number or art and design books, but beyond that the subjects of the books in her library run the gamut from fiction and non-fiction to history, current events and everything in between. “I never go anywhere without at book. I guess you could call me a bibliophile,” she says, laughing. “I’ve always 32

been a curious person. I love to learn about new things and I am constantly reading.” When she and her husband moved into their home in Eagle Ranch, they designated one room that would become the library. Barrie had the entire room outfitted with custom bookshelves, which were built so that her books can be stacked two deep to accommodate the size of her collection. The room is a sanctuary in the home where Barrie spends a considerable amount of time. Furnished with couches for relaxing and a beautiful round table where she displays books that are most special to her, the library is a central hub in her house. In the Kitchen “I like to cook,” is the response from Chris Randall when asked what inspired the home library in his Lake Creek residence. Spread throughout numerous rooms in the house, but concentrated in the kitchen on a series of beautiful custom-built bookcases, Randall’s library is comprised in large part of a vast collection of cookbooks. More than 300 of them. “I am constantly adding to my collection in spite of the fact that my wife has forbidden me from buying any more books,” Randall jokes.
Though cookbooks are a very big part of his library, Randall has an interest in all sorts of books, noting that perhaps the most meaningful book in his library is a first edition of “The Reivers” by William Faulkner. The love of books and the collecting of them is a legacy left to him by his parents, whose own home library included of number of rare and valuable first-edition Faulkner and Hemingway novels. “My parents were big book collectors and traders, always looking to get rarer and rarer editions of books,” says Randall. “The house was literally floor to ceiling books.” American Fiction Mark Noble started collecting books the year he graduated from college. Since that time, Noble has amassed a library of rare and first-edition fiction novels that is both valuable and enviable. His collection is based on books that he likes to read, and his preference has always been for American fiction writers who have written during his lifetime. Through many years of living abroad and traveling the world, his preference has expanded to include a number of foreign fiction writers and even a few non-fiction authors. For his favorite writers, he has en-
deavored to collect a first edition of every book they have written, many of which are signed by the authors. Noble’s favorite book in his collection is Norman Mailer’s “The Naked and the Dead.” “I wrote my undergrad thesis on Norman Mailer and he has always been one of my favorite authors. I have almost a complete collection of his works lacking only a few magazine articles and limited-distribution essays,” Noble says. “This book is also one of my most valuable, worth around $5,000 these days. I paid $45 for it years ago. I do not pay too much attention to the values, as this is not a financial investment for me, but something more.” Noble’s library, now close to 2,000 books, was faithfully dragged along on many moves since he started collecting in 1973, including a move overseas. The library has become cumbersome to travel with and now resides in his second home in Arrowhead, where he and his family spend a number of weeks each year. Noble is always adding to his library and is currently working on finding early works from two authors: Elmore Leonard and Dean Koontz. Embellished Covers People have long touted that it

is bad practice to judge a book by its cover. But when building a library based mainly on the aesthetic that it will lend to a home, the cover is exactly what determines which books will be included in the collection. These types of libraries are often the charge of interior designers, and there are a few ways to go about building them. Numerous booksellers sell books “by the foot” based on a particular aesthetic. Often times, however, in order to compile a collection of books that all fit within the parameters of a specific look, many of the books may be entirely unknown titles and often times they are in foreign languages. But what about someone who wants a library that fits the look of their home and is comprised of books they actually want to read? Many by-the-foot retailers will source books based on specific subject or time periods, but it is unlikely that the purchaser will have the option to select the titles they will receive. That’s where Thatcher Wine of Boulder-based Juniper Books comes in. Wine invented the custom book jacket and launched it into the market in 2010. Through this method, Wine has created a niche for himself as an artist who is able to take a collection books with mixed colors and bindings and turn them into a beautiful piece of art that brings life to the shelf. Wine can take a collection of books and create custom leather jackets that perfectly fit each book in the collection and unerringly match the look and feel of his client’s home, as he did recently for a home in Red Sky Ranch. While Wine admits that many of his clients are not picky about what is inside the books on their shelves — hundreds of bargain-priced copies of the same bestseller from last year will do the job when they are all wrapped in beautiful, matching white vellum or a set of jackets that display a unique artwork. But Wine’s work also allows him to take a carefully curated collection of books and turn them into
a visually cohesive compilation. “Books are very personal and we all have reasons for buying certain books and deciding what to keep on our shelves,” Wine says. “I like working with families and helping them achieve something with their libraries that they didn’t necessarily think was possible — a very personalized collection of books that reflects their personalities and interests and also looks like it belongs in their home from a design perspective.” Since starting his business, Wine has had the opportunity to work on a number of high-profile projects, including a custom library created for the Architectural Digest Green Room at the 84th Annual Academy Awards in 2012. The result was a breathtaking collection that displayed some of the bestknown scenes from the history of film as artwork along the spines of entertainment biographies and books about film. Another of Wine’s favorite projects came about when he was asked by a client to help curate a collection of Jack London books and design custom jackets to cover them. Once he had a complete collection of early edition London novels, he commissioned Colorado artist Mario Miguel Echevarria to create custom artwork that reflected the adventurous nature of the author’s life. The resulting collection is undeniably beautiful and meaningful. No matter the reason for its creation, be it aesthetic or love of the written word, a privately cultivated library is a true treasure. As Cicero put it, “a room without books is like a body without a soul.”

AS VALLEY-WIDE REAL ESTATE MARKET IMPROVES, SELLERS’ POSITION ALSO IMPROVES
As the national real estate market recovers, so does the Vail Valley market. Buyers are moving quickly to purchase homes and take advantage of continued low mortgage rates and sellers, many of whom have been waiting for the right time to list their home, are coming off the sidelines and listing their properties. In fact, the Vail Board of REALTORS® (VBR) second quarter 2013 Quarterly Indicators Report shows that for the first time in recent history, local MLS listings are increasing as more owners recognize that the market is ripe and record low inventories are being consumed quickly — especially in certain price ranges. “We’ve seen a lot of activity in the $750,000-and-below price range recently,” says Julie Retzlaff, Chairperson of the Vail Board of REALTORS®. “Buyers are taking advantage of mortgage rates and the fact that this market segment is very fluid right now.” It’s widely accepted that the bottom of the real estate market has passed and many buyers are feeling a sense of urgency to purchase while rates remain low and before home prices climb. Further, though new listings are on the rise, there are still limited options based on some commonly sought criteria. A potential seller is currently in the stronger position if he or she has been waiting until the

right time to list their home and see the return that they want. “In many cases that time is now,” says Michael Routh, MLS Director for VBR and a local REALTOR. “Though there are
countless reasons why owners may have been hesitant to list a home, many concerns are being alleviated by the current market. Most notably, there are many interested buyers right now with
few options to choose from. That, coupled with the increasing sales prices commanded by sellers, makes this a good time to sell a home that you may have been hesitant to list in recent years.” Routh also notes that the days of limited inventory may be fleeting as investors who bought at the bottom of the market will recognize the opportunity to see returns and begin to list and sell their investment properties. As the supply of homes on the market becomes greater, the market will become more competitive. For potential sellers who have been considering listing their more expensive home, bringing a fresh listing to market during this time is often a smart move.” Gardner and many of his peers believe that while the sales activity in the $3 million and above segment has not been as active as that in the $750,000 and below segment, that trend may be about to change. “Many would-be buyers of multi-million dollar real estate have been investing their money in the stock market and seeing returns that exceed that which would have been realized in real estate during the same time period,” adds Gardner. “As the economy continues to stabilize, I predict that many of those investors will return to purchasing real estate, increasing the demand for luxury homes in the Vail Valley.”

couple decades ago, faux painting became a victim of the do-it-yourself movement; the term became a catch-all for amateurs taking carpet squares, rags and sponges and making all kinds of patterns upon their walls. Meanwhile, professionals kept up with the latest techniques, and then the economic downturn hit, forcing the best of the best to continue to hone their skills. Now that the economy is turning around, expert faux finishers and decorative wall artists are able to showcase what they’ve learned, practiced and mastered over the years.

How faux began to fail When the economy tanked, one of the first things to decline for homeowners was spending disposable income on decorative wall art. “Part of the problem when the economy hit was faux painting was taken out of bids because it was more of a discretionary expense,” said Jim Gannon of Vail Valley Decorative and General Painting. “It’s expensive, and a lot of people don’t know what they’re getting because the terminology over the years has been use in the wrong way … on HGTV, people see the beginning and the end, but they don’t see the prep work, so it looks easier.” He said faux painting started

Reinvention of faux With the combination of a bad reputation and an even worse economy, “everybody had to change their game,” said Joe Wakeman of Norlin-Wakeman studios. So professionals began to accent one wall or so,
out as a hobby, with people decorating a box, mirror or frame, then applying the technique to walls, but the problem came with keeping wall edges wet enough to blend well, especially in this dry climate. Once the do-ityourself fad portrayed faux painting as easy – and actually resulted in a less than desired product, many home designers began to look down on the technique, hardly viewing it as a high art. Plus, most finishes resulted from experimentation, where people wrote down their steps and introduced a new finish. He said that in the Vail Valley, unfortunately, sophisticated faux finishes exist in “very limited areas … there are more bad faux finishes than there are good because the guys doing it didn’t know what

rather than an entire home. As a result, professionals began to “reinvent themselves,” Wakeman said, and in the process, become more like fine artists, instead of “painters.” Rather than simply ragging or sponging, experts began recreating materials, such as marble – and even bas relief effects, on walls. Painters who simply took a week training and called themselves faux artists have, by now, mostly fallen out of the market because they didn’t possess the background skills to survive as professional tradesmen. And the do-it-yourself kits usually resulted in an effect “downright unattractive,” he said. “Nowadays, we try to be more intentional,” Wakeman said. “We still recreate materials.”

But, in the last few years, it has leaned toward more functional art, rather than pure decoration, he added. For instance, homeowners began to desire camo-blending: camouflaging unattractive cover plates in a room or applying attractive cabinet grains to salvage – and give a second life to – kitchen cabinets, rather than throwing them out; some examples included toning wood grain, or adding imagery, such as decorative pine cones to accent mountain décor. “We began to do much smaller things – focus on a wall or a room or an item rather than doing a whole house -which lends itself to a greater degree of artistry because you’re not creating a consistent look or finish throughout the whole house,” he said. As a result, faux finishes became more artistic by adding additional layers, or aesthetics, and the cost decreased, which also helped pique homeowners’ interest in “faux painting.” Now that faux painting has become, essentially, true wall art, homeowners are showing more interest again – and they have many more options to choose from. And faux painters still offer older techniques: Chipped antique stripping, which involves applying full-bodied glaze stripes, then chipping and scrapping the paint to give it an aged look. Color washing uses thin washes of glaze over a base color. Dragging creates a textured appearance. Glazing often achieves an Old World, or Tuscan, look. Stenciling can be very subtle rather than in-your-face. As Swanepoel Painting in the Vail Valley points out, organic earth clay finishes are a nice complement to the Green Build movement. And then there are plastering techniques, such as Venetian plastering, which gives walls the appearance of natural stone or marble by applying layers of plaster. And fresco involves fine art talent, because
it results in murals painted on plaster walls or ceilings; one example is the work of Michelangelo at the Sistine Chapel. The best decorative wall art are those that take days, if not weeks, to complete. One of the latest trends involves handmade wall coverings, which is a new take on the old idea of wallpaper. For this technique, artistic painters create a pattern on liner paper; the practice allows for more color options and textures, Wakeman said. Bonnie Norlin-Wakeman, who received her degree as a fine artist, is now creating bas relief wall art using plaster and other techniques. Her most popular offering is aspen trees in entry ways, which she says are perfect locations because they’re often very tall walls and “there’s not a lot you can do with them (otherwise) to make a statement,” she said. Because the three-dimensional aspen trees make such a statement, they become “an architecture form instead of an art piece, because they’re custom

Check out the edging. Paws cut by the steel edging that separates grass areas from bed areas is one of the most common of all pet injuries. Sharp steel edging is also dangerous for kids if they step or fall on it. Better options: edging with a rounded edge on top, poured concrete, bricks or pavers. Strange but true: many dogs eat rocks! • If you use river rock as mulch and your dog swallows them, you’re looking at a life-threatening situation and serious surgery. Crushed granite is also small enough to be eaten and its sharp edges can cut paws and feet. • Bark and wood mulches often trigger undesirable chewing and this light-weight mulch is easily kicked out of beds. Better option: cobble. About the size of a large baked potato, these rounded rocks are too big for dogs to eat or kick out of beds. Don’t park your dog on the deck. Dark wood decking gets extremely hot and dogs left on decks all day have suffered heat strokes. Splinters hurt paws and feet. Water features are good for dogs if the kids are old enough to play safely around them. Dogs perspire through their feet, so walking through the water is cooling. They also provide an ongoing source of water for hot days; be sure water cleaners are non-toxic. What about plants? Weeds are more than an unsightly. Prickly ones like thistle are painful. Some weeds, like purslane, are toxic to dogs. Gardening tip: Don’t weed in front of the dog. It teaches him to dig and pull up plants, which can ruin the yard and might make him sick. Wild mushrooms that tend to erupt after rainy periods can be toxic so deal with them quickly. Don’t rake or mow them as that spreads the spores. Wear a disposable glove, pick them and dispose of them in a bag that goes in the trash. Never compost mushrooms.

Common landscape plants that are toxic to pets Many plants and even some that are edible to humans are toxic to pets. Avoid these plants if your dog is
prone to digging up or chewing on plant material: • Foxglove/digitalis can cause heart failure. Is toxic to humans and pets. • Lilies. Easter lily, tiger lily, day lily, lily of the val-
ley and Asiatic or Oriental lily are know to be toxic to cats — and perhaps dogs. • Spring bulbs. Daffodil foliage will cause gastrointestinal upset, but the bulb itself can cause seizures. Most spring-flowering bulbs are toxic if the dog digs them up and chews them. Plant them in the front yard. • Iris rhizomes at the base of the plant. • Tall ornamental grasses. Dogs often eat these plants and the sharp grass blades cut their stomachs.

Toxic fruits and veggies Some of our common edibles aren’t suitable for pets. • Onions: mature and green onions, garlic and leeks, both raw and cooked, are toxic to dogs. • Rhubarb. • Hops are toxic, so if you grow them for home-brewed beer, be aware. • Chamomile, which some gardeners grow for tea, is another pet toxin. • Grapes are very toxic to dogs and that includes dried grapes — i.e., raisins. • Seeds of stone fruits such as peaches, cherries and apricots contain cyanide, which can poison pets. Notice whether your pet eats fallen fruit and how much, then check with your vet. Composting tip: If you compost, use an enclosed tumbler bin as the smell attracts animals.
