For the Birds – Discovering the Joys of Your Own Bird Feeder by Deena Schmalz
Deena Schmalz moved to Western Colorado as a newlywed from California (she married a Delta County native). Through her adventures of experiencing both the simple aspects and larger wonders of what Western Colorado has to offer, she wrote a series of articles under the column heading of Bloom Where You Are Planted – A Transplants Guide to Exploring the Western Slope. We hope you enjoy her perspective of life in our corner of beautiful Colorado! Several years back, I was having lunch at a friend’s house when I discovered the joys of watching all the activity at her birdfeeder. The simple wooden feeder stood on a post just a few feet from her kitchen window. As I sat there as the table, I was thoroughly entertained by the feathered creatures that were also enjoying their noontime meal. My husband and I discussed getting our own bird feeder, possibly even building one, but the plan never came to fruition. A few years later however, he surprised me with the gift of a cedar bird feeder. He installed a
post in the yard outside of our kitchen window and carefully attached the feeder to the top. We filled it with seed and then went inside, sat at our table and waited. Within 45 minutes, we had our first visitors. I couldn’t believe how many birds were in our neighborhood that were looking for an easy and tasty meal. Soon we had several varieties of birds regularly visiting our seed feeder. And it got a lot noisier around our house too, but in a good way. The symphony of avian songs that floated through our windows proved to be more soothing than distracting. After spending many hours watching my birds while sipping coffee or eating a snack, I decided I wanted to get to know them a little better. I mean, how well could I really know them if I didn’t even know their names? So the following spring, off we went to Wild Birds Unlimited in Grand Junction to find a bird identification guide. What an amazing collection of everything a backyard birder could need! After perusing several books, my husband and I decided on the Birds of Colorado Field Guide by Stan Tekiela. I highly recommend it. It contains full color photographs of 130 species of birds that either live in or migrate through Colorado. It is divided by bird color and is arranged from smallest to largest bird in each color category. It also has migration patterns for each bird on a map of the state as well as interesting facts about the habits of each species. Now with my guide in hand, I was able to identify all of the birds in my yard. Some are daily visitors, such as the common House Sparrow and Mourning Dove. Others are seasonal visitors, like the Dark-Eyed Juncos that only visit during the cold days of winter. And some birds are just one-day visitors, only stopping to eat and rest on their way to some unknown destination. One of these was the beautiful, strikingly blue Lazuli Bunting. There was no mistaking him because he’s on the cover of my guide. I wish he’d come again for another visit; there’s always plenty of room at the feeder for one more.

Since I’ve had my bird guide, I have identified over 24 different species just in my own yard. That’s a lot of birds! Some days everybody’s in the mood to eat at the same time and there can be up to 60 birds around my feeders. Yes, I said feeders. My collection has now grown to include four seed feeders and two nectar feeders for the little hummers (that’s what birders affectionately call hummingbirds). Watching the antics of my feathered friends is so relaxing and is a great antidote for the stresses of daily life. It’s also a very easy and inexpensive hobby to maintain. You can set up a feeder in your own yard for less than $20 and it only takes a few dollars a week to keep it full of wild birdseed. Well, I’ve come to the end of my space and I haven’t even started on the entertaining personalities and habits of all the birds that visit my yard. I guess that will have to wait for another story, another day.

Finding the Right Real Estate Agent By Sam Erickson Picking a real estate agent is one of the most important things you can do when buying a home. The agent will find you homes to look at, negotiate with the other party and eventually close the deal. They will help guide you through the process with their years of experience. Because they are so essential to a successful search, it’s worth your time and effort to pick someone you can really work with who has the expertise to shepherd you successfully through the process. What do you look for? The right real estate agent is not necessarily someone you would want to spend time with. What you are doing is establishing a business relationship, not a friendship. As such, open communication is essential. You should be comfortable asking questions, and the agent should be willing to accommodate your requests. Remember, it’s your money, so picking someone who is going to get you the best deal is always your best option. Nothing beats experience and knowledge of the market, so try to find someone that is an expert in the area where you are looking and has been in the field for some time. Some agents specialize in buying houses and some specialize in selling houses, so choose the right one for your needs.
Your best option is to get a referral from a friend or family member who has had recent experience with an agent. They can give you the positive and the negative aspects of the agent. If you can’t get a referral or you’ve exhausted those options, one great way to meet several different agents is to attend open houses. You can briefly interact with an agent and get some idea about their personality without any commitment at all. If you time things right, you can meet with several different agents in the same day. You can also get a feel for how they will treat prospective customers for your home. Be wary of anyone who tries to rush you into paperwork. Before selecting a real estate agent—and definitely before signing any kind of paperwork—try to sit down with several and interview them. You can learn a lot about someone by the way that they interact on the phone and treat you from the start. Agents will take a percentage of your final sale, so be wary of anyone that is trying to encourage you to spend more money than you are interested in. There are many agents in the market today with varying skills and abilities, and the home buying process can often be a long one. If your agent isn’t working out, you may choose someone else to represent you. Getting Ready For Your Home Purchase By Sam Erickson Homeownership is back on the rise, and you might be thinking about putting down some roots and taking on a mortgage. It can be a daunting task, but following a few simple steps can help put you in the best position to be successful with your home purchase. First, check into your credit score. Even a small problem like an old, unpaid traffic ticket can reduce the credit score and can easily be taken care of. It’s best to tackle this problem several months before you start seriously looking to buy a home. Do a home finance audit. A home is a major commitment. Along with the actual mortgage come insurance, property taxes and any home repairs. You can’t just call a landlord in the middle of the night to fix a problem; you’ll be responsible. One easy way to do this is assiduously to track all of your income and expenses for two weeks, including small things like an extra coffee and even your tips. This will let you know if there is any wiggle room in your finances where you can cut back to increase savings or make payments on a house. If you are already at the edge of your spending range, you may need to cut your spending or increase your income in order to afford a home. Buying a home you can’t actually afford will leave you stressed out each month and may lead to things like missing payments or even foreclosure in the long run. If you’re not prepared, it may be best to wait. Do your research. There are a lot of things you’ll have to research in order to be an informed buyer. First, you’ll need to build a team of trusted people to help you with your home purchase. This includes a real estate agent, a mortgage broker or lender, and a home inspector. In addition to researching your team, you’ll
want to do a lot of research on the market. Individual home markets differ, and knowing what the trends are in your market can give you the tools to make an advantageous offer. You’ll also want to research neighborhoods. Things like schools, access to public transportation, crime rates and resale value in homes can make a big difference in your quality of life and in your long-term investment. Finally, get pre-approved for a loan. A pre-approval—which is different than a pre-qualification—is a guarantee from a lender that you will be able to acquire a loan in that amount. This is key with sellers, particularly those who are choosing from multiple offers. It provides them with assurance that your deal won’t fall through. A home is the biggest purchase most people make in their life. As such, it deserves extra time, attention and research to make sure that you make the right decision. The Colorado National Monument rises 2,000 feet above the valley floor and covers 32 square miles of rugged terrain. It was established as a park by President Taft in 1911 and today is managed by the National Park Service. It is a wonderland for outdoor enthusiasts. There’s one campground and picnic areas are located in various places throughout the park. There are also miles by Deena Schmalz of hiking trails ranging in difficulty from short and flat to steep trails rated for expert climbers. The steep canyon walls are a big draw for rock climbers as well. One of the giant stone monoliths that is a favorite of climbers is Independence Monument. This tower in the sky usually has at least one group a day that works their way to the top. In fact, while we were admiring that very spot, we saw movement on the flat top of Independence Monument and only with the help of a zoom lens could we make out the individual climbers celebrating at the summit. It was amazing how tiny they were in comparison to the stone giant. But for those less hearty souls, like myself, the best part of the Monument is just driving through it along Rim Rock Drive. This 23-mile road takes you along the edge of the canyons and the scenery changes around every curve. The beautiful, sheer canyon walls are striped with colors of red, beige, orange and black that seem to shift with the light after each passing cloud. But perhaps even more spectacular than the canyons are the unique variety of rock formations that crop up from the valley floor. Just when you think you’ve seen the best monolith, the next bend in the road provides an even more breathtaking view. There are more than a dozen overlooks and pullouts along Rim Rock Drive where you can get out and walk just a short distance to the canyon’s edge. What I like most about the Monument is that these canyons really allow you to get up-close and personal with them. They’re not so vast or so deep as to be overwhelming. Another special treat during spring is all of the wildflowers. I never knew the desert could be so green with blooming plants! If there is an especially wet spring, those tenacious little plants can really put on a showy display, and photo-worthy flowers can be seen all the way through the beginning of June. But any time of year, this park makes a great day trip. Allow an hour for driving the canyon rim from end to end, and then extra time for taking in the vistas and snapping pictures. The Visitor Center is on the west end of the park and they offer exhibits, books and short films to help you get more acquainted with the area, as well as walks and talks with the Park Rangers. So go ahead and make the drive to the Monument. As my mom said, “It was well worth the trip.” For directions, entrance fees and Visitor Center hours, please visit www.nps.gov/colm.
An Afternoon Drive Through the Monument

And that’s just what my family thought too when we took them to the Monument for the first time a few weeks ago. My parents were here from out-of-state for a short visit and we had a Saturday afternoon with no definite plans, so off we went to Grand Junction. The Monument rises majestically along the southern edge of the Grand Valley. As you drive through Grand Junction, you may glance at the cliffs above the Redlands and think, “Hmmm, that’s nice,” and not really have any idea of the natural wonder that is camouflaged among those towering rocks.
