Some of the most gorgeous scenery can be found right here at home. Equally as impressive as the physical splendor are the unparalleled opportunities for winter recreation. The entire Western Slope is a playground for snowboarders and downhill and cross-country skiers, with trails and peaks galore. Snowmobilers delight in the hundreds of acres of terrain and an annual average of 35 feet of snow. Some other favored winter recreation includes ice fishing, sled dog racing and snowshoeing. Ice Fishing On the “land of 1,000 lakes,” there is no place better to dip your line into one of the many well-stocked lakes than on Grand Mesa. One favored by local fishermen is Ward Lake, a watery home of rainbow, brook, brown and cutthroat trout. Ice fishing is perfect for an afternoon of solitude, or, for fun, why not enter the third annual Ice Fishing Contest on Feb. 7? The competition, which is open to both kids and adults, will be held at Island Lake, 16 miles north of Cedaredge. For tournament information and registration, call 970-856-6961. Crawford State Park is known for it's stock of perch and crappie, and is also home to a Northern Pike or two, as well as largemouth bass. When the lake is frozen over, there is no place more serene at which to spend the day

fishing leisurely. Once ice forms, the ice fishing at Blue Mesa Reservoir is another excellent destination. Solid, safe ice usually forms on most of the lake in late January; check conditions before heading out at BlueMesaFishing.com. Once there, expect cold temps but hot fishing – rainbows ranging up to 20 inches are just one fun catch you may land. Take the time to find a pocket of fish, either in the open water on a boat or at the safe, closer-to-shore ice patches – you won’t be disappointed! Sled Dog Racing One of the most exciting winter sports to watch is the grace and athleticism of a sled dog team. Head to Grand Mesa in Feb. 7-8 and watch teams perform in the annual Grand Mesa Summit Challenge. Racing will be teams of four, six or eight dogs, and teams of one or two skijor races (the rider skis while the dogs help pull). Teams come from all over Colorado as well as a few other western states, in the hopes of qualifying for the world championship races held in Alaska. It is an exhilarating experience to see a team of dogs running for the pure joy of running. The race takes place at the Mesa Top Trail, 20 miles north of Cedaredge. Snowshoeing Grand Mesa is also home to some worldclass trails for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing. Over 32 miles of both backcountry and groomed trails are maintained by the Grand Mesa Nordic Council. Snowshoers, however, are encouraged to explore the mesa off-trail. Not that adventurous? Try shoeing the Mesa Lakes, Ward Lake or Griffith Lake trails.

For a special treat and an all-ages, all-abilities winter outing, why not try one of the ranger-led snowshoe walks in the Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park? Experience winter's splendor at the park in the open meadows and along the rim of the canyon. Snowshoes are available for use at no charge. Snowmobiling Some of the state's best snowmobiling takes place on the Black Mesa, about 20 miles south of Crawford. There is something for every type of snowmobile enthusiast on Black Mesa: groomed trails for beginners and those looking for a Sunday drive-type of ride, or, for the more adventurous, acres upon acres of ungroomed land, with small hills and valleys perfect for taking the machine for a spin. More than great powder, though, is the scenery. You and your machine will glide over snow, some of the nearly 500 inches that fall on Black Mesa in a typical year, at an elevation of 10,500 feet, surrounded by lush forest. One of the most gorgeous rides is up to Baldy Mountain Reservoir, a destination popular with many locals.
