Jesus often used parables to give us a word picture of how God wor ks in our lives In the Parable of the Sower, Jesus uses the image of a far mer planting seed in his field First, the soil must be prepared Then the seed is planted The rain helps the seed to grow When conditions are r ight, the har vest is assured
This is how God wor ks in the life of a believer
First the soil of our lives is prepared Then God plants the seed of the gospel (God’s Word) in our lives It is up to us to allow the Word to grow Here are four ways people receive the Word The first three hinder growth
PATH SOIL (Mark 4:4)
The path soil was hard and cr usty The seed did not lodge in it at all A closed mind will not grow spir itually
ROCKY SOIL (Mark 4:5, 6)
The rocky soil was a thin layer of good soil on a thick layer of rock The seed would sprout up quickly but die because there was no way to get its roots down deep A person who is not rooted in God’s Word cannot grow spir itually
THORNY SOIL (Mark 4:7)

Jim passed away Wednesday, Octo ber 5, 2022 at his home in Otsego He was born August 28, 1945 in Plainwell, the son of Neil and Virginia (Bushee) Misner Jim graduated from Otsego High School in 1963 He proudly served his country in the U S Army as a mechanic from 1966 1968 He earned his Bachelor of Science degree from Western Michigan University He owned Weber Motor Sales in Allegan until he received his Master’s in Education from Grand Valley State University in 1989 Jim began teaching at Dumont Lake Juvenile Facility and went on to be Tran sition Coordinator at AAESA for 19 years until his retire ment In his free time Jim enjoyed camping and metal detecting He was a member of the Otsego American Legion and Otsego United Methodist Church where he was an active reader and loved bible study For 28 years he was married to Theresa Boysen and on May 8, 1999 he married Kathleen Barton who passed away in 2017 Surviving are his children, Brian (Jill) Misner, Neil (Kate) Misner and Shawn (Shawn) Kolhoff; step children, Amy (Brian) Dole and Adam Strong; many grandchildren and great grandchildren; brother, Howard (Melissa) Misner; brother in law, Gary Shook and his cat, Ruby He was preceded in death by his par ents; wife, Kathy; daughter in law, Amy; sister, Sondra Shook and by his 4 legged girl, Sophie Friends may meet with Jim’s family from 5 8 PM, Friday, October 7, 2022 at the Winkel Funeral Home, Otsego A funeral service will take place at 11:00 A M , Saturday, October 8, 2022, at the Otsego United Methodist Church with Pastor Jeremy Africa, Pastor Joe Shaler and Pastor Dan Minor officiating Military Honors by Otsego VFW Post #3030 Cremation will follow In lieu of flowers contri butions in memory of Jim may be made to the Otsego Veterans Memorial

passed away peacefully at her home on the 25th of Septem ber 2022 Sally was born on March 16, 1936 to Clarence and Sarah (Gearhart) Wollen haupt Sally was a devoted mom who was loving, gener ous, and kind She willingly gave her time to others and openly shared her beautiful smiles and warm hugs Sally was determined, some would say stubborn She always wanted to pay the tab and insisted on carrying the heaviest bag You always ate, whether hungry or not Sally loved horses, the lakeshore, gardening, the changing colors of fall, and especially spending time with family She had a superior work ethic, yet was happiest when working outside covered head to toe in dirt with sweat dripping from her brow Over the years, Sally spent countless hours tending to her yard and flower gardens She will be greatly missed by her chil dren Scott Hendrixson (Deb), Carla (Gary) Steinke, Chriss (Ken) McCulloch; grandchildren Scott Hendrix son, Jr , Samantha (Chris) LeBlanc, Jerey (Corey) Steinke, Jill Steinke (AJ); great grandchildren Caleb Hendrixson and Emma Steinke, special niece Pam Fuller, former spouse Irwin “Gus” Hendrixson, many nieces, nephews, and friends Sally was preceded in death by her parents, sisters Irene Nichols, Wilma Gre gory and Mary Drainer, companion Leon Holmes We are grateful for the guidance and sympathetic sup port provided by Wings of Hope Hospice, Allegan

Roger H. NEWMAN AGE 87 OTSEGO MI
Heaven’s sports teams cheered the arrival of Roger Newman to their ranks on the morning of Sep tember 25, 2022 An athlete of note for the vast majority of his life, his loved ones are quite sure he pole vaulted his way over the pearly gates, nailed the landing, and is already on the tennis court running drills for anyone with an interest in the game Born in Wisconsin 87 years ago, Roger, his parents Howard and Hazel, and younger sister Margaret moved to Allegan, Michigan when he was fifteen Howard bought Skogmo’s Department Store in nearby Otsego shortly thereafter, modeling a career in retail that Roger would later emulate Roger’s lifelong love of sports solidified at Allegan High School, where he lettered in four sports, and eventually was inducted to the Allegan Athletics Hall of Fame Roger earned his bachelor’s degree from Western Michigan University, playing basketball for the Broncos and for a short time leading the nation with his stellar free throw percent age He served his country by enlisting in the Army and loved to tell people about another recruit with whom he shared a long ship journey to Germany, Elvis Presley Upon his return stateside, Roger began a ca reer in teaching, first in Otsego, then Portage Public Schools One fateful day at Otsego High School a stu dent teacher named Georgia Sheldon caught his eye and he never looked away They were married in 1965, the same year he received his Master’s Degree in Counseling from WMU A few years later they wel comed their son Marc, followed by their daughter Marcy Roger was a natural at fatherhood and his in terest and involvement in his kids’ lives never waned, whether it was the hours spent on various sports fields with Marc, or chaperoning and driving on school trips and competitions with Marcy In 1976 Roger surprised Georgia by expressing his interest in buying his par ents’ store building and continuing to run a department store there As a team they founded Newman’s De partment Store which was a vibrant business they would run together for the next 15 years and later tran sition to the Otsego Antiques Mall Roger was a fixture downtown and in the community at large, active in the Chamber of Commerce, an elected member of the Ot sego City Commission, an engaged participant in the Kalamazoo River cleanup planning, and a tennis coach at Otsego High School Roger always loved to travel and enjoyed planning routes that wouldn’t take him the same way twice Many family vacations were em barked upon with Rog behind the wheel of a motor home He had a passion for waterways, and had a dream of paddling from Vicksburg, Michigan to Vicks burg, Mississippi The dream was never realized, but the planning brought him much pleasure Roger also traveled to compete in various Senior Olympics com petitions both at the state and national level Into his seventies he could be found bringing home gold and other medals in the high jump, long jump, pole vault and tennis A crowning achievement was his bronze medal win in the high jump at the National Senior Olympics in Tucson, Arizona He leaves behind a family forever grateful for his world class decency, his smile, and his absolute, multi faceted and unconditional love and support He is survived by his wife of 57 years Georgia, his kids Marc and Marcy, their spouses Pan rada and Pete, grandkids Nico and Ruby, his sister Margaret and several nieces, nephews and cousins

Janet Elaine (Long) Fulton was born May 21, 1936 in Eaton Rapids, Michigan to Ellen Jane Long Janet passed peacefully at home to be with Jesus and her hus band Richard on October 2, 2022 She graduated from Eaton Rapids High School and Central Michigan Univer sity She started her career as a teacher, and was the “J” in Plainwell’s R&J News Agency, helped found Cooper’s Center Inn restaurant, and established Little People’s Preschool and Day Care, along with 50+ years as an active member, teacher, and volunteer at both the Plainwell United Methodist and Empire United Methodist church She is survived by both her sisters, Mary Ellen (T Ashton) Fredenberg and Anna Marie (John) Pelham, her daughter Susan (Wayne) Walker, her son, Richard ‘Dick’ Fulton and her daughter in heart Judi Fulton, along with six grandchildren, Roddy, Mark, Taylor, Ellie, Sydney, and Noah, 5 step grandchildren and 3 step great grandchildren, and numerous in laws, nieces, and nephews Janet was an avid knitter and was constantly knitting or crocheting prayer shawls, scarves, blankets and sweaters for Christian projects in need around the world She may perhaps be best remembered as one of your or your children’s Sunday School or Vacation Bible School teachers Janet will be laid to rest next to Richard in Cooper Township Con tributions in memory of Janet may be made to the Plainwell First United Methodist Church “Free Commu nity Lunch” or to any food pantry in your local neigh borhood
