A brief history....

The Community Shoppers Guide was founded and published in 1940 by Howard Bargwell. He did all the work by hand. The paper was distributed once a month to approximately 1000 Otsego residents for free. The paper changed ownership through the years, and was bought in 1945 by Grant “Mack” Bennett. He increased circulation into Plainwell and delivery to once a week, distributing to approximately 3500 residents.

In 1970 computerized typesetting was offered and purchased to improve the publication. Circulation was increased to 8500 residents. In 1974, due to the high costs of the postal service, the Community Shoppers Guide started its own delivery system. In 1975 it relocated to the Downtown Otsego office that it is currently in now. Ron Bennett, Mack’s son, took over ownership in the early 1980s. Then, Ron’s son, Marty Bennett, took over in the early 2000s.

Evelyn Pearl Shook, passed away, Thursday, December 22, 2022, at Stanford Lodge in Plainwell She was born May 5, 1928 in Detroit, her parents were Wilber and Nancy Orris She really enjoyed being part of a large family as she had 11 brothers and sisters Pearl moved with her family to Martin, MI, at a young age She graduated as co-valedictorian from Martin High School Pearl was a ‘lifetime” member of the Martin Methodist Church She married Melville Shook on October 28, 1953 Together they owned Martin Variety Store for 25 years They adopted their daughter, Janet in 1963 Surviving are her daughter, Janet (David) Clark; granddaughter, Carla along with many nieces and nephews She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and siblings, Helen, David, Vernon, Herbert, Warren, Alice, Mary, Wilma, Dorothy, Robert and Ralph Contributions in memory of Pearl may be made to the Martin Methodist Church

Ed passed away Thursday, December 29, 2022 in Allegan He was born July 13, 1931 in Kalamazoo, the son of Theodore & Mildred (Williamson) Hill Ed proudly served his country in the U S Army during the Korean War For almost 43 years Ed worked for James River until his retirement in 1993 In his free time he enjoyed hunting, fishing, hiking, backpacking, photography, woodworking, shooting skeet and playing the guitar and organ On November 16, 1951 in Cannonsburg, MI he married Beatrice Lewis who preceded him in 2021 Surviving are his children, Edward (Ann) Hill Jr , Ronald (Char) Hill, Debbie Marculis and Gene Hill all of Otsego; 10 grandchildren; several great and great-great-grandchildren and sister, Nyla (Paul Ullrey) Merrill He was preceded in death by his parents, wife and brother, Theodore Hill Jr Friends may visit with Ed’s family starting at 10:00 A M , Monday, January 2, 2023, at the Winkel Funeral Home, Otsego, until the time of the funeral service at 11:00 A M , with Ed’s sister, Nyla Merrill officiating Cremation will follow Contributions in memory of Ed may be made to Wings of Hope Hospice

Marilyn passed away, Friday, December 23, 2022, at Borgess Hospital in Kalamazoo She was born June 3, 1938 in Hopkins, the daughter of Leon and Edna (Cooley) Arnsman For over 27 years Marilyn worked for General Motors She enjoyed playing cards, doing puzzles, camping and traveling, working in her flower gardens, spending the winters in Florida and taking care of her family She liked working with the youth and was active in the choir at her church in Florida She was also a member of Lakeland Reformed Church in Vicksburg and the Otsego VFW Post #3030 Ladies Auxiliary On December 19, 1999, in Vicksburg, she married David G Crotser who survives Also surviving are her children, Sue Ellen (Robert Morgan) Meisheri of Arizona, Beth Gudith Wood of Texas and Julie (Gary) Wheeler of Otsego; step-children, David (Laura) Crotser of Indiana and Colleen Crotser of Portage; 15 grandchildren; many great-grandchildren; siblings, LeeDale “Pete” (Peggy) Arnsman, Jim (Rita) Arnsman, Richard (Caroline) Arnsman and Margaret Vanderveen; sistersin-law, Mary Ann Arnsman, Gitta Arnsman and Joyce Kruithoff along with many nieces and nephews She was preceded in death by her parents, son, Roger Gudith and siblings, Betty Kruithoff, Delbert, Fredrick “Fritz” and Raymond Arnsman A funeral service took place on December 27, 2022 at the Winkel Funeral Home, Otsego, with Pastor Stephen Burrow officiating Burial followed at Mountain Home Cemetery in Otsego Contributions in memory of Marilyn may be made to the Church of God in Otsego, Alzheimer’s Foundation of America or Lakeland Reformed Church in Vicksburg

Carl passed away Sunday, December 25, 2022 at his home Carl was born December 25, 1945 in Otsego to Carl and Irma (Rowe) Kling He was a 1964 Otsego High School graduate Carl proudly served in his country in the Navy during the Viet Nam War After serving his country he worked for Gibson Guitar until it closed then he owned and operated Carl’s Hair Cellar for 38 years In his leisure time he enjoyed traveling the US, riding his beloved Gold Wing motorcycle; was a member of golf leagues for many years; enjoyed playing cards and games and loved woodworking Surviving are his companion of 11 years Shirley Hayse; his sons, Ryan (Kelly Haverstick) Kling of MA and Michael Kling of Sturgis; 2 grandsons, Mitch (Megan) Kling and Kyle Kling; 2 great grandchildren, Alyana & Hunter; his brother, Bruce (Melinda) Kling and niece and nephew Gary and Beth and many extended family members He was preceded in death by his parents and by Lynn Valerie (Wagoner) Kling, his wife of 33 years Friends may meet with Carl’s family on Thursday, January 5, 2023 from 5-8 P M at the Winkel Funeral Home, Otsego Private burial of ashes will be at Mt Home Cemetery at a later time Contributions in memory of Carl may be made to St Jude Children’s Hospital

Muriel entered eternal rest Wednesday, December 21, 2022 Muriel was born May 22, 1927 at Forest Hill, MI to Earl and Augusta (Deline) Michael She was united in marriage to Robert Lee Raycraft on August 17, 1947 in Pleasant Valley, MI They celebrated life together for 64 years before his passing in 2011 They wintered for many years in Zephyrhills, FL and enjoyed travel and camping with family and friends throughout their married life They built their retirement home on a 79-acre farm in Alamo Township when Mr Raycraft retired from The Upjohn Company in 1977 Muriel was a gifted seamstress, crafter and gardener and a long-time member of Grace Harbor Church, formerly known as the Westwood Church of God She is survived by a daughter Cindra (Robert) Froman of Kalamazoo and a son, Mark (Jeri) Raycraft of Stevensville, MI; a grandson Kenneth (Lorien Cunningham) Dyke, granddaughters Laine (Ben) Allen of Grand Rapids; Lauren Raycraft of San Diego, CA; Caroline (Richard) Collier, Kalamazoo and Stephanie (Shawn) Mcelvain, Kalamazoo; seven great-grandchildren; a brother James (Roberta) Michael, St Louis, MI; sisters Carla DeMott, Middlebury, IN and JoAnne Peet, Alma, MI and a sister-in-law, MaryAnn Raycraft, Longmont, CO; and many nieces and nephews She was preceded in death by a son, Timothy Raycraft, and a grandson, Matthew Dyke Visitation and funeral service took place at Winkel Funeral Home, Otsego on December 28, 2022 Rev William Ferguson officiated Interment followed at Alamo Center Cemetery

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has released a new National Broadband Map

Since high-speed internet is not available to nearly half a million homes in Michigan, we are continuing to urge every Michigander to check their home and business address on the preliminary broadband map to ensure it accurately reflects their level of internet access Our office is working to challenge the map too, but it’s impor tant for everyone across the state to know how to view and challenge the map

Here’s how to access the FCC broadband map:

Go to https://broadbandmap fcc gov/ Type in an address and see if the repor ted coverage is accurate You can access the site from a computer or a mobile device

Residents can submit a challenge by clicking “Location Challenge” if the location of their home or business is missing or incorrect, or “Availability Challenge” if the internet service information is incorrect

Residents should visit the website of any internet service provider that claims to serve their location and use the website's "Check Availability" or similar tool to determine if the provider can serve their location If they can't, a screenshot of their website can be submitted to the F CC as evidence for an Availability Challenge

The FCC also allows local governments, tribal governments and other stakeholders to file bulk challenges for multiple locations on behalf of their communities Governmental entities can access the underlying broadband serviceable location fabric that forms the foundation for the address locations on the map

Our team is encourag ing consumers, communities and any others with a stake in broadband availability to submit challenges to the FCC map if a discrepancy is found Having an accurate federal map will ensure that Michigan receives its equitable share of federal funding to achieve universal broadband availability for all Michiganders To ensure an accurate map is used for funding decisions, all challenges must be submitted by January 13, 2023

Proceeds will go towards medical bills and his prosthetic needs It will help enable him to walk and be as mobile as possible His goal is to resume working part time Eddy Holmes from Otsego's class of 1977 was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at an early age In 2010 due to complications from loss of circulation his left leg was amputated above the knee He didn t let it slow him down and resumed operating heavy equipment

November 2022 he was admitted to Bronson Methodist Hospital with severe pain in his right foot He under went 3 surgeries to open his arteries to no avail His right leg was amputated November 28th The doctors were able to secure a bed for him at Mar y Free Bed hospital for rehabilitation

However it was denied by his insurance and he was sent home a week after the surger y Eddy is a fighter but he needs our help We thank you in advance for helping him meet his goals

As we begin a new year it is good to remember that we believe in a God who makes all things new The first big event was when God created the wor ld (Genesis 1) The final event will be when God makes “A new heaven and a new ear th (Revelation 21:1-4) We are living in between these two life-giving and life-changing events

This brings us to the possibility of being new persons in Jesus Christ as follows:

1 We can have a new perspective

This may be called a new mind-set or attitude We begin to see persons and situations through the eyes of Chr ist We can star t each day by filling our mind with thoughts of Chr ist We can join the Psalmist in praying, “Satisfy us in the mor ning with your unfailing love that we may sing for joy and be glad all our days” (Psalm 90:14)

2 We can have a new purpose

A new perspective gives us a new pur pose God has a pur pose for our lives Our pur pose is to do God’s will and glor ify Him in all that we say and do Over the years I have known many who found meaning and pur pose in a personal relationship with Jesus Chr ist The only way to find meaning in life is to know the One who created it

3 We can have a new power

When God changes a life, God always begins on the inside The Chr istian life is nothing less than allowing Chr ist to live within us (Colossians 1:27) The only thing God requires is a willing spir it and obedient hear t
