REFLECTION: This stor y is about keeping the Sabbath day holy and r ight before God On a Sabbath day Jesus was invited to a traditional evening meal at a Phar isee’s house This was a pr ivate dinner par ty and there was a cr ippled man who was also invited that night The owner of the house set the stage to condemn Jesus for healing on the Sabbath day Just as predicted, Jesus touched the man and healed him This act of love and kindness was seen as a violation of the Sabbath law, so an argument pursued So why are we lear ning this stor y and what is the pur pose? As a Chr istian who has been blessed with God’s word, we understand that to receive the Good News of Jesus’ saving grace, we need to submit to the authority of God as our Lord and Creator In this stor y they do not submit, but are defiant By defying Jesus’ love for the man they defy the Law of love You see, the Law of God was given so we would come to know our sinful nature and why our lives are filled with miser y Romans 3:20 For no one can ever be made right with God by doing what the law commands The law simply shows us how sinful we are Jesus clearly teaches the summation of the law when he says in Matthew 22:37 40 “You must love the Lord your God with all your hear t, all your soul and all your mind This is the first and greatest commandment A second is equally impor tant: Love your neighbor as yourself The entire law and all the demands of the prophets are based on these two com mandments ” It is obvious the trap set by the Pharisees was not an act of loving God or a sick neighbor
