Ten “To Do’s” For Homeowners (NAPS)—It’s time to check around the house to make sure things are operating efficiently. Here are 10 often-overlooked tasks to add to your home-cleaning list: 1. Check AC: Have your air-conditioning system tuned up to lower energy bills and ensure the system is running at its manufacturer-rated efficiency. 2. Check Water Heater: If your water heater is more than five years old, check it for signs of leakage or rusting at the bottom. 3. Fertilize Lawn: Apply a high-nitrogen fertilizer once in the spring and again in the fall. 4. Check Refrigerator: Clean the refrigerator’s condenser coil with a long-handled bottle brush and a vacuum cleaner with an attachment hose to remove dust and lint that could shut down the unit by causing it to overheat. 5. Clean Gutters: Clean the gutters so the

rainwater flows easily off the roof. Clearing leaves prevents water from pooling in areas and attracting mosquitoes. 6. Organize Closets: Wash or dry-clean clothes before storing them in a zippered sweater or blanket bag or in a plastic bin. 7. Clean Carpets: Vacuum carpets and shampoo with a spray foam or powder, or rent a steamer from the hardware store for a deeper clean. 8. Wash Exterior Windows: Pick a cloudy day to wash exterior windows. Too much sun dries the cleaning solution too quickly and creates streaks. 9. File Important Documents: Store warranties, operating manuals and other documents in hanging files, folders or binders for easy access. 10. Check Batteries: The average home is filled with battery-operated devices—from flashlights to smoke detectors to cordless

phones. Don’t forget to test those devices and replace the batteries with fresh ones. Test smoke alarms once per month and change the batteries at least twice per year. Ensure there is at least one working smoke alarm on every level of your home, particularly in or near sleeping areas. According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, about 3,000 people in the U.S. lose their lives in residential fires every year. The Winkel Funeral Home is a second generation Otsego business. This well-known business, previously located at 117 E. Orleans St., was purchased by Raymond and Bernadine Winkel in l956. They also provided an ambulance service. The business merged with the present 207 E. Allegan St. location in l964. In l968, Raymond and Bernadine added an addition to the building. Their son, Jim, and Jo Ann Winkel came into the business in l972. Ray retired in l984. The building itself dates back to l880. Some historical pictures on display at the funeral home include a picture of one of the first horsedrawn hearses in Allegan County. This long time local business, which employs two full-time funeral directors and their wives, and eight part-time employees, is known for its

will celebrate their 70th wedding anniversary and their 90th birthdays this year. After meeting at Plainwell High School as teenagers, they decided to marry on October 24, 1942, in Kalamazoo, Michigan. The next 70 years they spent farming the family farm and participating in the community and their church, which they continue today. They have six children. They all reside in the Doster area. They are Rita (John) Wells, George Scott (Sue) Doster, Millard (Nancy) Doster, Jade (Bill) Harrington, Kim (Nancy) Doster and Mark Doster. To round out their family they have 14 grandchildren, 2 step grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren and 1 step great-grandchild.

Duane passed away Wednesday, October 17, 2012 in Kalamazoo. Duane was born February 3, 1934 in Ferrysburg, Michigan to John and Grace (Ruiter) Kuiper. In 1951 he graduated from West Michigan Christian High School and in 1960, he graduated from Western Michigan University. He served in the Air Force during the Korean War. Duane and Pam together with Eugene Zelmanski were the owners and operators of the Lighthouse Restaurant in Otsego from 1975 to 1990. He initiated the concept, helped design and organized the founding of Prairiewood Golf Course. He enjoyed playing ping pong with grandson Tyler, fishing and golfing. On June 30, 1972 in Otsego he married Pamela S. Hutchinson, who survives. Also surviving are 7 children, Cindy (Andrew) Parenteau of Elk, Washington, Mark (Peg) Kuiper of Cooper, Robert (Trish) Kuiper of Vicksburg, Karen Kuiper of Otsego, Matt Kuiper of Vicksburg, Michael (Angelique) Kuiper of Otsego, Doug (Katie) Kuiper of Troy; 14 grandchildren; 7 great grandchildren; 1 sister Nancy VandenBosch of Spring Lake. He was preceded in death by a brother Jack Kuiper and 2 sisters Sally Swartz and Doris Wezeman. In accordance with his wishes, cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held Tuesday at 11:00 am at the First Congregational Church of Otsego. Private burial will be at Mountain Home Cemetery. Contributions in memory of Duane may be made to Rose Arbor Hospice or North Point Church or First Congregational Church. Arrangements by Winkel Funeral Home, Otsego. Charles Howard Beardsley passed away on September 27, 2012. He was preceded in death by his parents, Howard and Eupha Beardsley. Surviving are son Robert (Carrie) Beardsley of Portage and daughter Cindy (Ted) Murankus of Florida, brother Eugene (Pat) Beardsley of Kalamazoo and sister Jenny (Dale) Hayward of Scotts; six grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
