✫✫✫✫✫✫✫✫✫✫✫✫✫✫✫✫✫✫✫✫✫ Dear Otsego City Voter, Next Tuesday, November 8th, is election day in the City of Otsego where we will elect four of the five members of the city commission for the next two years. In this election, Commissioner Misner is running unopposed for a two year partial term. There are five candidates running for three seats on the next commission. The two candidates receiving the highest vote totals will be elected to four year terms. The candidate receiving the third highest total will be elected to a two year term. All will join Commissioner Wieber who is not up for election this year. The new commission will choose the mayor for the next two years at their organizational meeting on November 14th. It is the type of election that is often overlooked by a majority of the voters, but its outcome is very important to the future of the city.

There are three things I would ask you to consider: 1. First of all, vote next Tuesday. However things turn out, it will be better for the city if the results really do represent the majority of the voters. 2. I would ask your support for my reelection. This will be my third and likely last term on the commission if I am successful. It is my personal goal in the next two or four years to prepare Otsego for the future by engaging new people in the process who will be ready to assist in moving our city forward. 3. I encourage you also to support Cyndi Trobeck, who was appointed to fill a vacant seat on the commission last year, and is now running for a full term. She has a long history of community involvement and has been an outstanding addition to the commission. I also hope you will vote for Stacy Rogers for the seat being vacated by long term commissioner Joel Thompson. She has been active in Rotary, the Chamber of Commerce, and this year was the co-chairperson of our very successful Creative Arts Festival. She is part of the future I was talking about above and I believe she will be a wonderful commissioner.

Preparing Your Car For Winter By Craig W. Armstrong When you're a kid, winter is great. You get to make snowmen, snow angels, snow forts and have snowball fights. Plus there's the pinnacle of all winter activities...the snow day! But when you grow up and you have to go to work in a blizzard, winter can become a pain in the neck. If you've ever driven in the snow, you know it's an art. You get better with practice, but it's always a challenge. The one thing that can make it easier is to make sure your car is prepared. Let's start with the oil. Did you have it changed when you were supposed to? If you did, good for you, but you also need to make sure your car has the right kind of oil. Oil's job is to lubricate your engine's moving parts and suspend contaminates, keeping them away from the engine. In cold temperatures, oil thickens.

Therefore, you need to make sure the oil you are using will remain thin enough to do its job. The first place to find out which viscosity (or weight) you should be using is the owner's manual. If it doesn't have the information, stop by your local auto supply store. Someone there will know what's best for your car and winter driving. Next make sure your tires are properly inflated. This is a good idea all year around, but it is especially important in the winter. You want your tires properly inflated and working at their best to ensure your safety and that of your passengers. Open the hood and check your belts and hoses.You may not be a mechanic but you can tell if a rubber belt is frayed or damaged. If so, have it replaced. Don't Let Your Tires Tire By Craig W. Armstrong We know what they are and we know what they do, but do we know how to take care of them? Most of us don't think about our tires until they are flat, but not only will proper tire maintenance save you money, it could save your life. Check your tire pressure regularly-monthly and before long trips. You can purchase a traditional pencil gauge or an easy-to-read digital gauge. (Public pressure gauges are subject to abuse and may not be reliable.) Check all four tires when they're "cold" (before startup) or after the car has set for at least three hours. Be sure to occasionally check your spare tire also. You will find the recommended psi (pounds per square inch) in the vehicle owner's manual or on the driver's side doorjamb; some vehicles may also have the information inside the fuel hatch filler flap or the glove compartment door. DO NOT rely on the pressure indicated on the tire; that is the maximum psi and does not take into account driving conditions and situations (speed, load, etc.). Your tire gauge will tell you how much pressure is in the tire. If it's under the recommendation, add some air...BUT DON'T OVERINFLATE. Because air expands when it's hot and contracts when it's cold, it's best to inflate your tires in the morning before the day's heat. Underinflated tires have greater friction with the road, causing your car to work harder and be less fuel-efficient; underinflation also causes unnecessary wear on tires.

Next check the wear on your tires. If the wear is excessive, you will see a smoothness that has replaced tread. A way to check tread wear is to enlist the help of our 16th president. Place a penny into the tire's groove with Lincoln's head upside down and facing toward you. If you can see the top of "honest Abe's" head, it's time for a new tire. Any tread depth less than 1/16 inch is not only dangerous but is illegal in many states Another way to keep your tires in good working order is to rotate them every 5,000 to 6,000 miles. Rotating your tires allows them to wear more evenly. If the tires are original to your vehicle, your owner's manual will tell you when to rotate. If they are replacements, the shop that installed them will recommend a schedule. Being aware of the age of your tires is essential for safety. Because aged tires can deteriorate from the inside, it is recommended that tires over six years old not be used. Federal regulations require that a DOT Tire Identification Number be branded on the tire's sidewall. At the end of the ID number is the week and year of the tire's production: 2309 or 239 means the 23rd week of 2009. Be aware of the age of your tires and replace accordingly. These simple tips require little time when compared to the consequences of ignoring them. Proper tire maintenance is just one more step toward making sure your vehicle runs properly and safely.

Most of us know that regular maintenance is key to a well-running vehicle. That's why we get our oil changed, have our tires rotated and so forth. Another important part of the regular maintenance schedule is the tune-up. Because the internal workings of vehicles have changed so much over the years, the definition of a tune-up may vary from the simple replacement of spark plugs to the complete overhaul of several areas within the vehicle. Most experts agree that the best tune-ups involve an inspection of several areas, including the battery, engine mechanical, powertrain control, fuel, ignition and emissions. Not every shop defines a tune-up in this way, however. Generally, the more involved the tune-up, the more it costs. When scheduling a tune-up, it is important that you find out what it will entail and how much it will cost. Be wary of really low estimates; chances are the shop is pushing for your business and the final bill for the tune-up will be much higher.

The best shops understand that not all drivers know what a tune-up is and request one on the assumption that it will fix whatever is wrong with their vehicle. They will ask why you think your vehicle needs a tune-up and go from there. You may discover that what you really need are new battery cables rather than new spark plugs. Once you have several estimates, sit down and compare them. Select the shop whose estimate includes a fairly thorough inspection at a fair price. You want to make sure that when you drive away from the shop your vehicle is running smoothly and efficiently. The term "tune-up" means different things to different people. Keep that in mind as you shop around for estimates. Know what you are getting before you take your vehicle in, and if you are getting a tune-up for any reason other than maintenance issues, relay that information to the shop. If you don't, you could end up paying for a tune-up plus a repair.

Playing Charades With Your Mechanic By Craig W. Armstrong "It's like a muffled squeak followed by a highpitched bong, and sometimes it just hums. It almost sounds like it's humming that old ABBA song...oh, I can't remember the name of it, but it sounds like that." Is this how you explain to your mechanic the noise your vehicle is making? Have you ever used the word "galonk"? Have you ever imitated a Madagascar hissing cockroach when describing a noise or mentioned anything about what it would sound like if someone squeezed a duck...really hard? If you answered yes to any of these questions, you probably need help conveying troublesome sounds coming from your vehicle. Cars and trucks make lots of sounds; some are normal and some are a definite indication that something is not functioning properly. Most people have a good idea of which sounds are normal and which ones need to be checked out. The important thing is to be as accurate as possible when describing those abnormal noises to your mechanic. Like doctors, mechanics need to

have a reasonable and thorough explanation of the "patient's" symptoms; they will rely on you to give them that information. Be able to explain when you hear the noise. Is it at start-up or when you turn off the vehicle, when you are going uphill or around a curve, when you're braking or when the

gears shift? Be specific in your explanation. Next describe the location of the sound. Rather than using the terms "right" or "left" side of the vehicle, you can avoid confusion by referring to the "driver's side" and the "passenger's side." Is the noise coming from the engine, underneath the car, from the rear,

around the tires? You may even want to draw a diagram indicating the troublesome spot. Often a mechanic will test-drive your vehicle and listen for sounds so they can accurately diagnose the problem, but how many times have you taken in your car and it won't make the noise or "do that thing" for the mechanic? The main way to avoid this frustration is to be an expert, prepared witness. Explain any and all known "maladies" associated with the noise. There may be vibration or leaking fluid. Explain where you feel the vibration-in the steering wheel, under your feet, etc. Indicate the location of any leak and the color of the fluid if possible. Are there any other noticeable differences in how the vehicle is riding or handling? To repeat: Be thorough and specific in your explanation. Mechanics expect a certain amount of charades from customers (and they probably enjoy them sometimes), but accuracy in your explanation will help them do a better job of repairing your vehicle and getting you back on the road faster.

Gasoline By The Numbers by Craig W. Armstrong Living with today's economy can be a challenge. Prices go up but paychecks often stay the same; making ends meet can be tough. One way to confront this problem is with math. You may consider math another four-letter word. However, better understanding where your hard-earned money is going can help you keep your finances in line...and that takes simple math. One cost that fluctuates a great deal is the cost of gasoline. One week it's high and the next week it's probably higher. If you know the mileage your vehicle is getting, however, you might be able to make adjustments and save a few bucks. Like keeping your home clean, vigilance is the key. Clean out your car once a week. If you spend any time in your car you are going to accumulate "stuff" during the course of a week. To keep these items from taking over the interior, you can throw them away, organize

them in the car or move them out of the car. Although manufacturers indicate a vehicle's city/highway MPG (miles per gallon), those numbers will fluctuate based on the driver and driving conditions. So how do you accurately figure the mileage you are getting with your vehicle? First, prepare a worksheet to record data; you can use a notebook or a computergenerated spreadsheet. Whichever you choose, make sure you have a column for each of the following: Date (on which you purchase gas), Odometer Reading, Miles Traveled, Gallons and MPG (Miles Per Gallon). (For budgeting purposes, you may want to keep a record of Amount you spent for gas also.) Now head to the gas station and fill up your tank. Be sure to use the lock on the nozzle handle so that the pump shuts off automatically when the tank is full. Do not top off the tank. Before you leave the gas station, record the

date and the odometer reading and set your trip meter. The next step is easy...just drive. When your fuel gauge registers about a quarter of a tank, head back to the gas station and fill up again. This time, record both your Odometer Reading and the number of Gallons (found on the pump) used to fill up your vehicle. You can find Miles Traveled in two ways.You can look at your trip meter (if it hasn't been accidentally reset) or you can subtract your current odometer reading from the original reading you logged on your worksheet. For example, if your first odometer reading was 46,526 and your current reading is 46,852, you have traveled (46,852 minus 46,526) 326 miles. Next divide the miles you have traveled by the number of gallons of gas you just used-let's say 15.2, 326 divided by 15.2-and you'll have your miles per gallon. In this case, your MPG is 21.4. However, this reading is accurate for only this tank of gas. You will want to average several fill-ups to get an accurate idea of your vehicle's MPG. Averaging is easy; just add your miles per gallon notations and divide by the number of notations listed. For example, if you have recorded four MPG figures on your sheet, 21.4, 20.8, 22.7, 19.7, add them all together for 84.6. Now divide that number by four and you have your average, 21.2 miles per gallon. So, what do you do with those numbers? See if you can improve your gas mileage. How? The first thing is by performing simple maintenance. Are the tires properly inflated? Do you have the oil changed regularly? Is the air filter clean? Next consider your driving habits. Do you let your vehicle idle for long periods of time? Do you often drive in stop-and-go traffic? Are you a "speed demon"? Do you start quickly and stop suddenly? Making adjustments and then checking your MPG will let you know how much you are saving at the pump. The process will take minimal time, but once you get the hang of it, you might find it fun‚ imagine that, saving money while having fun with math.

There are some things that cannot be put off. Back in the year l915, Dr. Clarence E. Macartney (one of the great preachers of the twentieth century) delivered a sermon on the above topic from his pulpit at First Presbyterian Church in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He repeated that sermon every year for nearly forty years with wonderful results. One example was a medical student who heard that sermon but the words “Come before winter” stayed on his mind. He needed to study, but he first wrote a letter to his mother whom he had been neglecting. He went out and mailed it. The very next day, he received a telegram informing him that his mother was dying. It was a long trip home. She died before he could get home, but under her pillow he found the letter he had written. It had meant so much to her. Here is the context. As he sat in a jail cell at Rome, Apostle Paul realized he did not have long to

live. He knew he would probably be executed. Even if his life were spared, his body was tired and frail. So he wrote two letters to his close friend Timothy. In that dreary cold jail he remembers an old coat he had left in Troas. He asks Timothy to pick it up and bring it to him. He tells him to bring some books he had also left behind. He comes to the end of the letter with those words of urgency “… come before winter.” When winter came navigation was closed in the Mediterranean. If Timothy did not come before winter, it would be too late. It is not known whether or not Timothy came to his dear friend. The message is clear: If you need to say “I love you” or “I’m sorry” or “thank you” to someone; do it now. If you need to say “yes” to God; do it now. While you’re at it, call a veteran today and thank them for serving our country. Peace to you, and please join us for worship this Sunday in a church “where Jesus’ love is lived.”
