The range of music extends from sacred music to Annie Lennox and Elvis, with some barbershop tunes in between.

Rehearsals, led by director Sian Winstanley, make use of sheet music as well as “teachtracks” so that singers do not require sightreading skills to join in.

One of Glasgow’s leading choirs will be coming back to its roots to play a concert in Helensburgh this month. The City of Glasgow Chorus will perform on March 7 at 7pm at St Michael and All Angels Church. The programme will include the Faure Requiem, with soloists Ellen Mawhinney and Colin Murray, and short choruses from well-known oratorios. History reveals that the Chorus was founded by Graham Taylor MBE, who conducted the Helensburgh Dorian Choir from 1978 to 1982. He left then to establish another chorus which evolved into the City of Glasgow Chorus. See www.cityofglasgowchorus. org for more information and tickets will be available at the door or from the church.

It’s hoped that a selection of bands will come forward to play on the days that the ship is “in steam, so as to offer a boosted visitor experience. There will also be guides on board ready to give tours and talk about the history of the ship, as well as a new merchandise shop. The Maid is an example of Clydebuilt ship engineering and boasts a beautiful art deco inspired interior. Already a much-loved feature

Helensburgh’s remarkable contribution to Team GB’s sailing team for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics continues with another call up. Former Lomond School pupil Anna Burnet from Shandon has become the third Burgh sailor to be confirmed for the British sailing squad in Japan. Both Charlotte Dobson, who competes in the 49er FX, and Luke Patience, who sails in the 470 Men’s, are from Helensburgh and have already been named as part of the team. The dance teacher was notified by letter in November that she would be receiving the award but had to keep it a secret until the beginning of January when the list was officially released to the public. 'WE NEED A PARKING SOLUTION' Late News Vivien Dance of the Chamber, which works closely with Helensburgh’s Community Council, delivered a presentation recently on last year’s Town Audit. It highlighted that Helensburgh’s town centre continues to perform above average compared to similar sized towns.

Helensburgh Pier Car Park

The Helensburgh and Lomond Chamber of Commerce has joined retailers in the town in calling for a parking solution. As work starts on the new seafront development, town businesses have highlighted there is a lack of parking provision for tour buses in the town centre, which they say will adversely affect many retailers. The Chamber has subsequently identified a need for alternative parking, with the council suggesting Craigendoran Avenue or Rhu Road Higher, both distant from the town centre.

Discussions about the possibility of two or more bus bays on East Princes Street, near the former gasometer site, are also ongoing. In addition, it’s claimed there is a need for more than two bus bays and sufficient disabled bays in the new development, which will include a new leisure facility incorporating a swimming pool. Meanwhile, chief executive

The Helensburgh Community Planning Group also invited Vivien to talk about the audit and the Chamber was invited to join the group to represent the business community.

The Chamber, which holds monthly meetings with invited speakers, is keen to welcome additional members. A spokesperson said: “The Chamber needs more members and resources in order to continue to be the voice of local business. Our meetings, at which information is shared and issues of concern aired, provide ideal networking opportunities.“

As has been recently highlighted, suicide sadly remains a significant risk in our communities. People continue to die as a result of feeling isolated, helpless and cornered, despite often appearing to maintain an outward appearance of coping with life, even looking successful. For many years it has been a taboo subject, leaving those behind with a sense of shame or guilt. People struggle to find the words to talk about it, with the result that the risks become magnified.

GPs are trained to talk about these difficult subjects, and offer help to those who may be considering suicide, or families and friends suffering from the after-effects which people carry with them for many years. There is no shame in talking about this and there are many people around who want to help. Often simply sharing worries and anxieties will start to lift people out of their dark thoughts, and begin a recovery. Speak to your doctor, nurse or phone the Samaritans or NHS24 if you need help. There will always be an answer.

Ministry of Defence Marine Approval for Construction Projects Gabion Basket Repair – Douglas Pier, Lochgoilhead. Notice is hereby given that the Defence Infrastructure Organisation (DIO), “the applicant”, has applied for approval to carry out marine construction works at MoD Lochgoil, Douglas Pier, Lochgoilhead, Argyll & Bute, PA24 8AE The Ministry of Defence (MOD) is the key decision-making authority for this project because under Schedule 5 of The Scotland Act (1998), Defence is a Reserved Matter, and therefore the marine licensing provisions of the Marine (Scotland) Act 2010 (MSA) do not apply (MSA, section 34)1. This is an established position between the MOD and the Scottish Government. To ensure good practice and compliance with EC Directives and other international commitments, the Secretary of State for Defence’s ‘Health, Safety and Environmental Protection (HS&EP) in Defence’ policy statement requires that: “Where Defence has exemptions, derogations or dis-applications from HS&EP legislation we will maintain Departmental arrangements that produce outcomes that are, so far as reasonably practicable, at least as good as those required by UK legislation”. Therefore, the MOD intends to undertake a process which mirrors the marine licensing and EIA processes that would be required for non-defence marine construction projects in Scotland. Copies of the application, including plans showing the location, the proposed works in more detail and presenting an analysis of the environmental implications, are available for inspection free of charge at the following addresses, and by mail on request from smmcqueen@qinetiq.com: The Post Office, Main Road, Lochgoilhead, Cairndow, Argyll, PA24 8AQ and MoD Lochgoil, Douglas Pier, Lochgoilhead, Argyll & Bute, PA24 8AE Any representations or Queries should be made in writing to the applicant by email to: smmqueen@quinetiq.com or by post to Mrs S M McQueen, MoD DG Range, Greenisle, Rosneath, Helensburgh, Argyll & Bute, G84 0QT, identifying the proposed works and specifying grounds for objection or support, not later than 7th March 2020. The MoD may consider representations received after this date. Representations should be dated and clearly state the name (in block capitals) and the full return email or postal address of those making the representation. Subsequent submission by the applicant of additional information will be publicised in the same way as the current application. Representations regarding the additional information should be made in the same way as detailed above. Having considered the application and any representations, the MoD may grant approval unconditionally or subject to conditions; or refuse the application. The decision will be notified to all those who make representations and be available from smmcqueen@qinetiq.com

Happiest Day of your life? Some people know exactly what sort of wedding they aim to have – may even have planned it for years – while others fret over details large and small as the Big Day draws ever closer. Will it be a “cast of thousands” big production at some splendid Scottish baronial pile, or an intimate affair for a dozen people? Registry office or local pub – or how about a floating wedding on board a paddle steamer? Is it going to be a church wedding, or one where a celebrant plays a leading role?

The only problem with the infinite variety of ways in which you can celebrate what should be the most important day of your life is the difficulty of making final decisions– from where to have the actual ceremony to where you choose to stage your reception (and of course dovetailing the whole procedure with, in most

Outdoor weddings in Scotland are “Russian roulette” at any time of year, but Spring showers may not be a problem if you’ve a great venue lined up with plenty indoors to keep everyone amused. Time is the one element you have to watch most carefully, because while you may have a beautiful dress chosen and fitted, a reception booked, and all the rest of the logistics of getting bridesmaids sorted with dresses and food sorted to cater for special diets – and all the rest of it – may have to be signed and sealed by a specific date. However you manage things, be prepared to take advice but always ensure both of you approve every single important detail, and that way you should be guaranteed a truly happy day you will look back on with pleasure for the rest of your days.

Legal Aid is a crucial part of Scottish society and our legal system. Essentially, it is public funding that’s is available through the Scottish Legal Aid Board (SLAB) to allow people to be provided legal advice and assistance or representation on a variety of civil and criminal matters concerning Scots law. It is available to people over the age of sixteen, but also importantly, to those under sixteen who require it and are capable of providing instructions to a solicitor. There are, of course, restrictions to financial eligibility depending on any savings you may have and also your weekly disposable income. The level of your weekly

disposable income may result in funding being made available but with a contribution also payable by you. There are certain state benefits which will automatically qualify an applicant for Legal Aid. Interestingly, SLAB indicate that 75% of Scottish adults would qualify for civil legal aid. Although this is likely to be with a contribution. However, that contribution is usually paid by way of monthly instalments and ensures that access to legal advice is affordable to those who require it. It is always worthwhile asking your solicitor for further advice regarding your own particular set of circumstances and whether you would qualify for Legal Aid.

SUMMER

DIARY DATE

ORATORIO SINGS ORFF AND DOVE Helensburgh Oratorio Choir will perform a double bill with both adults and children on stage this month. The concert will take place in Helensburgh Parish Church on Sunday March 22 from 7.30pm.

Winter may not yet have disappeared, but it’s time to add Helensburgh’s Summer Festival to your diary. This popular annual event will take place from 10am to 4pm in Colquhoun Square on August 8 this year and promises more of the summery fun that has made it a firm favourite locally. In addition to arts, crafts and local food producers’ stalls, there will be music and sideshows to entertain the crowds, as well as information displays from local organisations. There are also plans for plenty of street food to be on offer, too. Prospective stall holders should contact Stall Hire Scotland via its website stallhirescotland.co.uk.

EAT CAKE AND RAISE FUNDS A local association of arts and crafts members is inviting people to eat cake, drink tea and raise funds for a poignant charity. The Helensburgh & Lomond Artisans Association is hosting a pop-up tearoom at Helensburgh Parish Church Hall on March 28, from 10.30am to 3pm. All profits will be donated to Children’s Hospice Association Scotland (CHAS). Angela Coates, co-chair of HLAA, said: “We made the decision two years ago to run a pop-up tearoom while still having our regular craft fairs. “We chose CHAS because we wanted to support Robin House in Balloch. We did quite well in the first year and raised a couple of hundred pounds.

“Last year, we were delighted to raise a lot more, £975, through the sale of teas, coffees and cake, as well as raffled items and generous donations. This year we hope to do the same again.” All the cakes in the pop-up tearoom are made by the two chairs of HLAA, Angela and Heather Little, and there will be a range of crafts on sale, too. HLAA comprises a group of local artisans who believe that much can be gained from small craft and artisan businesses working together. It is a non-profit making association. The group provides support and

advice to fellow artisans and hosts regular craft fairs for members to sell their work. They offer advice on how to market and advertise products for sale. The craft fairs are held at least monthly in Helensburgh Parish Church Hall, as well as in other locations throughout the year, with a range of stalls hosted by jewellers, sewers, potters and artists, to name a few. New members are always welcome and can enquire about joining HLAA. For further information see helensburghartisans.co.uk and www.facebook.com/ HelloArtisans.

THE MATCH OF THE YEAR JOB VACANCY A New Year tradition continued in Cardross as married men and single men went head-to-head on the football pitch.

Since 1994, the game – which this year took place on January 2 – has been marked with the post-match presentation of the Drew Purdie Memorial Cup. The married men have won 14 times and the single men on 10 occasions. Players can be from Cardross, whether they live there or have a “reasonable connection” to the village, perhaps through partners, friends or family.

Duties include organising and overseeing the magazine distribution for all our monthly publications. This will involve employing & scheduling staff to complete deliveries and manage our checking processes to ensure our commitment to deliver to all homes in the area.

Married versus Single at Cardross Station Park

Watched by a crowd of wannabe football experts, it was the experience of the married men that shone through as they lifted the trophy for the first time in six years with a resounding 8-2 victory.

Afterwards, the teams headed This year, almost 30 men laced up to the Cardross Inn for a night of food, drink and entertainment their boots for a game that was played in monsoon-like conditions and to discuss the big talking at the village’s Station Park pitch. points of the afternoon’s match.

Ian Purdie, part of the organising committee for the game, said: “The game has been played in every weather condition over the years, including sleet, snow, rain or frost, and, of course, rain.

Must have good organisational skills Be computer literate Good phone manner Have good attention to detail Driving license required Job is based in Helensburgh

“But the people of the village always turn out to either watch or play the popular game. We hope the traditional match continues to take place for a long time yet.”
