Local News | April 2020
GETTING TO GRIPS WITH THE VIRUS As this issue went to press a whole host of public and private organisations were making their plans to deal with the Coronavirus pandemic, with a strong focus on helping the most vulnerable. West Dunbartonshire Council has been working on the mechanics of how best to address its myriad responsibilities since it first became obvious the country is facing an enormous challenge, and it has a daily news and advice update at www.west-dunbarton. gov.uk/coronavirus?fbclid=IwAR 3IX7guriqBtu-8jzLdIBgEoUogwi UqYHwe_7mDnbILzXHS3Nk1sG qDjSw. West Dunbartonshire Council Facebook is also a good place to check on a daily basis as the situation continues to rapidly evolve. The area’s hard-working Y sort it team promptly made the difficult but necessary decision to close its youth centre and take other measures to adapt to the radically changed circumstances we now face. The Y sort it team will now be working from home, providing
uPVC POLISHING
support via emails, social media and telephone support, and will be coordinating with local partners and community organisations to provide emergency provisions. Manager Gillian Kirkwood said: “We will be taking calls as normal on 0141 941 3308, but there may be a delay in getting back to you. “You will also still be able to contact us on info@ysortit.com or any of our Social media channels. We will make sure someone will always get back to you”. You can check for updates on Facebook @Y sort it West Dunbartonshire; Twitter – @ Ysortit and Instagram – @ysortit. Meanwhile the Vale of Leven Coronavirus assistance and support Facebook page is a good way of staying in touch with local developments – it’s at www.facebook.com/ groups/645507389543663.
One contributor points out that while many are obviously in self-isolation that needn’t involve staying indoors all the time, as (particularly with the weather improving) there are unlimited opportunities for cycling and healthy walks – no crowds or other significant risk so long as you follow all the standard advice. There is also plenty of local banter, some of it very well informed, about all sorts of local shopping issues, how to deal with reporting symptoms – and much more.
One post asks people to treat retail workers with respect – some have experienced abuse – and where possible to send one person per family and (again where possible) no kids. West Dunbartonshire Community Foodshare Facebook is also an excellent source of up to the minute information on a variety of issues. The one message that comes over most strongly from all this endeavour is: “Think of the elderly and the vulnerable, who need our support most of all”.

Last month the area in focus was Balmaha, and on May 21 it’s the A82 at Loch Lomond – and help would be greatly appreciated. The volunteer Make a Difference days are organised to encourage everyone to come and volunteer for a day, meet new people and contribute to “making the wider national park area an amazing place to experience”. Also involved in the effort are The Oak Tree Inn at Balmaha, Forest Holidays and Luss Estates. Events include activity such as cutting back overgrown vegetation and invasive nonnative shrubs, litter picking and beach cleans, path and ditch clearing.

The Friends of Loch Lomond and the Trossachs’ regular “clean-up” events are already well underway, in partnership with the National Park.
Given the deluge of tourism traffic in the summer months there is always room for improvement, and the work carried out by the volunteers helps ensure the National Park
Make a Difference Volunteers
remains a natural resource in excellent condition. Last year the team certainly made a difference to a bocage-like tangle of rhododendrons which had blocked some of the nicest views of the loch – a task which by its nature has to be repeated every so often. Getting rid of litter left by inconsiderate visitors (despite all the warnings, the provision of “smart” bins and notices galore) is another key task which often needs to be addressed. It might not sound a lot of fun, but there’s camaraderie a-plenty,
and the added bonus (particularly now the weather is starting to improve) that all of these sessions take place in beautiful surroundings. At each location, a light lunch will be provided as well as any necessary tools and high vis jackets and gloves, although you’re also advised to wear comfortable outdoor clothing and appropriate footwear. Just contact the Friends at info@ lochlomondtrossachs.org.uk or 01389 727761 if you or your family/organisation would like to go along, or find out more.

The move is reckoned set to save local families hundreds of pounds per year, and will be phased in at schools across the area over the next two years, costing £950,000 investment in 2020/21. Disposal of some land assets is being planned as a means of levering the funds necessary for various plans designed to help local families. Council leader Jonathan McColl said: “Significant progress has been made over the last year to enhance our communities and support our residents. “We have completed the infrastructure for a new district
“To balance the budget the Council will progress with a number of sensible efficiencies such as being more efficient in how we deliver services to reflect how we meet the needs of the public. “The council will also be disposing of surplus land and buildings to generate funds to support ongoing investment.”

PRAISE FOR GOOD SAMARITANS Council employees John Ross and Ross Mackenzie are probably tired of hearing about it by now, but their prompt action to aid a pensioner who nearly died deserves full credit. It's always about 6.30am so there aren't many other people about. “It was still dark that morning, but up ahead I could see Malcolm's dog and it looked as though it was guarding something.

John Ross and Ross Mackenzie
They were walking to work when they saw 67-year-old Malcolm MacFarlane collapsed on the ground in Crosslet Road and covered in blood.
(which happened late last year) has praised the two for saving his life.
They helped to clean his wound and summoned help, later finding that in hospital it was discovered he was suffering from a blood clot.
John and Ross insist they “just did what any person would have done” in the situation, but things could have been very different if these two Good Samaritans hadn’t happened to be there at just the right time.
Malcolm, who has since made a full recovery after the incident
John said: “I see Malcolm most mornings out walking his dog.
“As I got closer, I saw that it was him, and he was lying on the ground, slumped against the fence and covered in blood. He'd obviously hurt himself when he fell. He was drifting in and out of consciousness and he didn’t know where he was. “He was taken to hospital, and we later found out that he had actually been suffering from a blood clot which had travelled from his leg to his lung. If it had gotten any further, then it could have killed him.” Ross said: “I’m just glad we were there to call for assistance and get him the treatment he deserved. Malcolm has called and thanked us for our help, but we are just both glad he has made a full recovery.”

RED CARD OVER BLUE BADGES The move has been backed by the Stirling Area Access Panel (SAAP), a local organisation which works to improve the local accessible environment. Chairman Robert Dick, said: “We fully support the council enforcing Blue Badge parking as, routinely, it is blatantly abused by other motorists, particularly in off-street locations like supermarkets, schools and railway stations.
Drymen and district readers who have suffered from a long-standing problem that affects disabled people in every part of the country will be pleased to hear that action is on the way. We’re talking about disabled parking abuse, and in particular local terms the fact that the local authority issued no less than 1,100 tickets to offending drivers in 2019. Now it is launching a campaign which will see enforcement officers closely monitoring disabled bays over the coming months. Environment and housing committee convener Councillor Jim Thomson said: “It is completely unacceptable that a small minority
“Parking in a bay designed for Blue Badge holders prevents them from carrying out day-to-day activities, accessing essential services and living independent lives. “This campaign will demonstrate our zero-tolerance to this kind of selfish behaviour and highlight why these spaces are vital for disabled drivers.”

PLANS FOR A RENTON CAMPUS A newbuild Renton Education Campus was among ambitious plans outlined in last month’s review of priority projects for local schools. The masterplan takes in all schools and early learning and childcare centres in West Dunbartonshire and identifies the spending required on buildings in future, and takes into account key factors such as present condition and the current and future school roll. The next phase will deliver a new build Renton Education Campus incorporating the existing primary school, language unit and provision of a new 0-5 early years establishment, which is set to open in 2021.

Chief Education Officer Laura Mason said: “Over the last five years, the council has invested £66.6m to provide enhanced learning environments for thousands of young people. “The Learning Estate Strategy for 2020 -2030 focuses on the
continued delivery of 21st century learning environments which fully meet the needs of individual young people and the wider community both now and in the future. “This is the initial stage in what would be an extensive process involving submission of a funding application to the Scottish Government.” The unfolding plan obviously has major implications for local youngsters in the years ahead, and the prospect of new facilities geared to the education needs of the future.
TAKE CARE OF MENTAL HEALTH The Covid-19 outbreak will affect people in different ways but many will feel anxious or stressed about the situation. In addition, extended periods at home in isolation will add to many people’s mental health issues. There is a range of advice to help you to stay mindfully strong. Take breaks from watching, reading or listening to news stories, including social media. Hearing about the pandemic repeatedly can be upsetting. Make time to unwind by doing yoga, meditating, reading a book or listening to calming music. Stay connected with others. Talk with people you trust on-line or on the phone about your concerns and how you are feeling.

Thousands of volunteers across the UK have set up groups to assist those who are most vulnerable during the Covid-19 pandemic. Self-quarantine can be a difficult experience for those who struggle with their mobility, health problems and those living on their own. The help groups offer their time to run errands for those in need, such as to buy groceries and pick up prescriptions, and also to chat on the phone if people are anxious or lonely. A UK-wide #viralkindness campaign has also been launched by a woman in Cornwall. Becky Wass came up with the idea to create shareable cards that allow people to offer help to their neighbours.

DON’T FALL FOR THE VIRUS FRAUD Local residents are being warned not to be duped by cynical scams that are already said to have cost victims more than £800,000 across the UK. The Scottish Business Resilience Centre is highlighting fraud attempts which exploit the fears of COVID-19 by sending out coronavirus-themed phishing emails which falsely claim to be from a reliable source.
for as much as £15,000 in one case.
In fact they aim to gain personal information and financial details, and to trick people into opening malicious attachments.
Ian Stephen, Head of Business Resilience with the SBRC, said: “It was a matter of time before coronavirus was used as a trigger, with scams likely to to rise in numbers as the disease continues to spread across the globe.
The emails claim affiliation with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the World Health Organisation (WHO). The scammers claim to be able to provide the recipient with a list of people in their region affected by coronavirus, should the recipient click on a link to access the information. However, the links lead to a malicious website – or alternatively victims may be asked to make a payment in Bitcoin. Multiple victims have also attempted to purchase protective face masks from fraudulent sellers
Although the majority of people would ignore these emails, it is feared the panic surrounding coronavirus may persuade some they are genuine.
“By doing simple things such as checking the address of the email sender, or by checking the URL link before visiting the website, users can significantly reduce the risks of being caught out.” For information on how to update your devices and protect them from the latest threats visit: www.ncsc.gov.uk/guidance/ securing-your-devices.
“Don’t be complacent either. These fraudulent emails are often highly convincing, but they do present tell-tale signs about their true nature which can act as strong warning signs.

There’s no shortage of advice about this weather, from the UK Government, the Scottish Government and the NHS – but local companies arguably need something more focused. That’s exactly what Dunbartonshire Chamber of Commerce has produced in the form of a no-nonsense guide aimed at companies who naturally want to protect their business and employees from the ongoing threat of Coronavirus, without resorting to blind panic or overkill. In essence it might be summed up by the oft-repeated phrase hope for the best but prepare for the worst, and high on its list of essential must-do’s is the need to maintain a business continuity plan – and maybe to consider updating it or revising it in the light of continually changing circumstances.
one with everyone present it will solve a lot of problems before they even need to be considered. Another key theme is flexibility – if one member of staff is off ill might another be available, with training, as a temporary replacement? To use the old cliché it is not rocket science, but on the other hand seeing a pragmatic and easy to understand way of marshalling your resources against future challenges is simultaneously useful and reassuring. None of this amounts to over-
reaction or hysteria, and is plain common sense, outlining both the obvious moves you can make and some other more oblique ways of ensuring your business plans for the year are as robustly protected as anything can be in an uncertain world. The Chamber also has the resources of its membership to rely on, which collectively represents a major pool of expertise and proven ability to arrive at problemsolving solutions. You can access the Chamber’s guide at www. dunbartonshirechamber.co.uk/ news-and-events/posts/2020/ march/what-can-i-do-to-protectmy-business-from-the-impacts-ofcoronavirus/?fbclid=IwAR00I5Qu gfoCzYnvdhvQiJqIkBsGH4sCaeRlI 91Agwwy_iL-khh7w5FImTM.
The Chamber’s guide also centres heavily on the importance of support and the desirability of finding novel but sensible solutions – for example if you can stage a video-linked meeting or conference instead of a physical

This month: COMMUNITY SPIRIT…
Orthokeratology
With coronavirus spreading rapidly, and numbers of people affected by the virus expected to rise sharply, all NHS workers are working extra hard to make sure that those requiring attention can get help when needed.
Overnight Vision Correction
Ortho-K contact lenses offer the same visual correction as laser surgery, without any invasive procedure. And unlike surgery, any changes to your vision can be reversed, as your eyes will always return to normal. Nocturnal Ortho-K Lenses are unique contact lenses that take away your short sight (up to -4.50D) while you sleep. They do this by gently changing the shape of your eye in a controlled way. All contact lenses even dailies change your eye in this way but Nocturnal™ Lenses are made to suit your eye precisely and enhance the affect to correct your eyesight. So, when you wake up you will take out your lenses and have clear vision all day! Nocturnal™ Lenses are cheaper than the monthly cost of some daily disposable contact lenses.
Examples include receptionists, delivery drivers, hospital porters and managers, as well as nurses, doctors and other clinicians.
You could experience a different lifestyle feeling free from most of the hassles of normal contact lenses. Nocturnal™ wearers no longer experience problems with hay fever, dryness, air conditioning, wind, dust or slippage… leaving you free to focus on enjoying a modern, active lifestyle.
Times like this allow us to recognise the important contribution all the team members can make, especially when working to the top of their abilities.

this in living memory, we are having to be creative about our approach, and behind the scenes a lot of work is going in GP Practices and hospitals to keep up with a rapidly changing situation. This can all be very unsettling for patients, with many consultations taking place over the phone or by video, and receptionists being trained to ask more questions, and give advice, than previously. However please be aware that patient care remains our biggest priority, and that we rely on the community to be considerate to one another at these difficult times.

THE CAMPING SEASON IS OPEN Wild camping is a thing of the past, but while the major changes brought in at the National Park are fairly recent not everyone has got the message. Camping season is upon us and this summer you may be considering a camping break, as in the less heavily used spots there really is a chance to get away from it all at a time when more urban forms of entertainment and relaxation are increasingly restricted. But most of us have seen the carnage the more thoughtless campers used to create in the past, some of it unmentionable, and for that reason a rigorous control regime was introduced which sets limits on where and how you can pitch your tent.
by the minority, who treat the area’s prime recreation asset with contempt and spoil it for everyone else. The old easygoing approach to camping is no longer sustainable, perhaps at least partly due to the increasing numbers arriving in the summer months. While organised campsites are not everyone’s cup of tea they do come with the advantage of clearly set-out rules, and are part of a wider plan to weed out the troublemakers and litter louts.

Working with the
Home & Garden Projects | April 2020 who likes the ornamental side of things, in which case you may be studying what landscape gardeners have to offer, and of course there’s a whole range of excellent gardening services you can easily access in the immediate local area. It doesn’t have to be either/or, when it comes to home and garden, as there is nothing to stop you pursuing several themes in both spaces simultaneously. These days domestic indoor and outdoor spaces tend to be increasingly closely inter-related in the more imaginative design schemes. Yours may well take into account factors including home security both inside and out, professional services that could include, for example, the supply and cleaning of blinds - and also carpet and upholstery cleaning – the basis of any ambitious plan will be a list of the must-have services you’ll need to bring the project to fruition. That will include a good painting
and decorating service to ensure the fabric of those significant improvements are finished to perfection.
SIMS
You may want to explore the planning consent ramifications of attractive new features such as decking, which if deployed in a way that’s sympathetic to the general look of your garden can be a very welcome addition. Meanwhile other features you might consider that are at once novel and practical might include the garden “Wendy House” – we’re not talking about a children’s play area (although that, of course, is another option), but rather the sort of free standing mini-conservatory that can be set aside as your own “me space”, and which in flatpack form can be surprisingly inexpensive. These and other interesting features can easily slot into a well thought-out plan capable of transforming your domestic environment.
GAS CENTRAL HEATING ENGINEERS
If an important home project is going to demand a significant budget you’re well advised to consult a mortgage and financial advice consultant, because the corollary is that by adding value to your home you are gaining not only an improvement you can enjoy but also an enhanced investment for the years ahead. If you are the sort of person who is intrigued by the myriad possibilities presented by home and garden redesign the good news is that success is simply down to planning, budget, and the amount of effort you want to commit to the whole project – helped along by people you can rely upon to deliver excellent results in every relevant department.

April 2020 | Legal Matters
COS SERVICES ARE NOW ONLINE As this issue was going to press the Scottish Government was advising people to minimise social contact by avoiding crowded areas and public gatherings – and that includes religious services. So a Church of Scotland task group has asked “in the strongest possible terms” that all gatherings for worship should cease until further notice, and is suggesting people turn to online services, TV and radio as a substitute. Dumbarton’s Riverside Church has been flagging up the alternatives, so that as many people as possible who want to keep the continuity of worship going can do so safely – but of course you should contact your own denominational place of worship to find how they are addressing the problems, and what special measures may be applicable during April and beyond. Sunday broadcasts of a weekly
service take place on BBC Radio 4, and also on BBC Radio Scotland; other radio stations are available. There are also church services in various forms streaming online at www. churchofscotland. org.uk/worship/ services-online and lusschurch.com/ stream.html. Dumbarton Riverside Church, meanwhile, posted the message: “If you know of anyone who needs support of any kind please do get in touch to discuss options for an appropriate response - call the church office on 01389 726688, email office@ dumbartonriverside.org.uk or via Facebook”.
Legal Matters with Gill Bowman BA LLB from Cairns Brown Solicitors
This month: SCOTTISH LEGAL AID During this unprecedented time of Covid-19 I thought it would be of assistance to remind people about the availability of financial assistance for legal issues from the Scottish Legal Aid Board (SLAB) and the application process. Public funding is available through SLAB for individuals to receive legal advice and assistance, or representation, for civil and criminal matters concerning Scots law. Legal Aid is available to individuals over the age of sixteen and also those under sixteen years of age who are able to provide legal instructions to a solicitor. There are, of course, restrictions to financial eligibility, depending on any savings you may have
and also your weekly disposable income. According to SLAB, 75% of Scottish adults would qualify for civil legal aid. It may be that this would be with a contribution. However, that contribution is usually paid by way of monthly instalments and ensures that access to legal advice is affordable to those who require it. At this time, face to face appointments with a solicitor may not be possible and as a result SLAB have allowed for Legal aid applications to be lodged without the requirement of signature by the applicant. We suggest you contact your own solicitor for further guidance if you do require legal assistance and are unable to personally attend for an appointment.

AREA HAS HAPPIEST HASHTAGS! West Dunbartonshire was recently the surprise winner of the title “happiest place in the UK” – but only according to a survey from a marketing agency. Ahead of International Day of Happiness on March 20 it tracked popular positive hashtags in more than 1,000 tweets over a seven day period, and scaled the results against each city's population to “reveal the happiest and unhappiest places in the UK”. West Dunbartonshire came out on top with the highest average of happy tweets per person, followed by Yorkshire and the Humber and Norfolk. Four of the top ten happiest places were in Scotland, with Falkirk, the
Highlands and Edinburgh also featured. Down at the bottom of the ranking was the City of London, Essex and Lancashire, which had the fewest positive tweets per person. The firm, Blueclaw, notes: “In fact, the North generally seems more content than the South, with a staggering 80 per cent of the lowest ranking places situated down South. “Breaking down the most popular tracked hashtags in each area reveals that social media users in
London are more likely to tweet about positive success, while those in the Wirral, Merseyside, like to document when they’re feeling happy or getting good vibes.” However while it may show that local people ping the peppiest social media messages the exercise doesn’t really tell us anything about wider society – in fact places including Orkney and East Dunbartonshire regularly score
well for general quality of life indicators. Where West Dunbartonshire really does score is in its unrivalled access to areas of natural beauty, with an endless choice of stunning destinations within reach of the sort residents in the dense thickets of suburban schemes in Greater London can only dream about. That is surely something to feel happy about – whether or not you ever feel like taking to social media to tell anyone.

‘PLEASE KEEP US KILTWALKING’ bit of fun that raises useful funds for charities – in these straitened times it is a lifeline that has garnered impressive support across the community.
GET SOME FRESH AIR
That being the case, this month’s event is off, but it’s certainly not over.
As we went to press the advice from experts was to try to get outdoors for regular exercise where possible. If you have been infected by Covid-19 or you are selfisolating because someone close to you is infected you should be very cautious about spending time outdoors with other people.
This year’s Glasgow Kiltwalk has been postponed indefinitely for all the obvious reasons – but key mover Sir Tom Hunter has launched a special appeal to supporters.
For those still well, accessing quiet trails or hills and mountains that you are familiar with is a good idea. It is important not to go anywhere or do anything new or excessive that might lead to an accident because this will add strain to an already overstretched medical service. Commonsense is paramount but fresh air is good for you.
The starting point of The Kiltwalk 2019 in Glasgow Green
He is in the agonising position of having to disappoint potentially hundreds of walkers and also find a way through the problem that will keep the funds it raises for charities coming in. In the light of the current situation, organisers have made the difficult but well-considered decision to postpone the Glasgow Kiltwalk on April 26. The health and well-being of the

public and the Kiltwalk community is at the forefront of this decision which is line with Government and NHS advice.
Sir Tom says: “We aim to restage the Glasgow Kiltwalk as soon as possible, however that looks like a long time away for charities in need of much support right now. “So our Number One objective is to raise funds now and get them to those who need it most as quickly as possible. “So firstly, if you can, please keep registering and fundraising for all of our walks. “Secondly, please keep registering and fundraising for the Glasgow Kiltwalk and we will add the 50% Hunter Foundation bonus to your fundraising totals as of 31st of March and pay the funds out as quickly as we can to your charities.” You can keep up to date with the Kiltwalk appeal’s progress now and in the testing weeks ahead at www.thekiltwalk.co.uk/news.

WEST DUNBARTONSHIRE
SOLVING PROBLEMS: TRANSFORMING LIVES The Citizens Advice Bureau service in West Dunbartonshire celebrates its 50th anniversary next year (Dumbarton CAB was set up by a group of volunteers in 1971) but for the first time ever it will be forced to close its drop-in service for an extended period of time, such is the impact of Coronavirus. However, Joe McCormack, Chief Executive Officer, is determined that the CAB will continue to assist the many people who use its services.
Joe said: “This is a very worrying time for many people: if you’re older, then you’re being told you’re at risk; if you have an underlying health condition, you’re being told you’re at risk; if you’ve been abroad recently, you’re being told you’re at risk; if you’ve been at any large group events; you’re being told you’re at risk. It’s a terrifying message but one that people can’t afford to ignore. “Like many agencies, we’re having to withdraw our face to face services until we’ve been told its safe. That doesn’t mean we’re not available to provide a service. It only changes the ways in which we advise and assist. In the coming weeks people can contact us using the details below”

Claiming Benefits
Employment Rights
It’s clear that people face uncertainty due to the COVID-19 outbreak and have a need for reliable information but often there are a lot of well-intentioned but misleading stories circulating.
Gareth King, Operations Manager at WDCAB, said: “It can be difficult sometimes to work out what benefit it is best to claim. WDCAB can assist if you phone or use the contact us page on our website. We can still carry out a benefit check but we do require information about your household circumstances, income (possibly for the previous year as well), housing costs, council tax and savings. If it’s a new claim for Universal Credit, our Help to Claim Advisers can provide support.”
John Falconer, Manager at Clydebank CAB, said: “Many companies are finding it difficult in the current climate and some sectors, e.g. bars, restaurants, hotels, etc., are looking at laying off staff, putting staff on short time working or paying off staff completely. People do still have employment rights in this difficult environment and WDCAB staff can assist if you contact us through the contact us page on our website or by telephone.”

We had our bathroom fitted recently and love it! Had looked at a few bathroom shops and wasn't too keen on buying the products and arranging our own fitter but these guys do everything as a package. When we visited the store the only problem was narrowing it down as I saw loads that I liked. The price was quoted in store (with no pressure) and when Richard came out to measure up and ensure everything would fit there was no change to the price. The guys were in and out in 3 days and the work was perfect. On third day I came home from work to find the finished bathroom and not even a speck of dust left behind. Would 100% recommend. Also the price was really competitive. Definitely with a look!

TIPS FOR SUCCESSFUL HOME WORKING For some people, the distractions of TV, social media and even doing household chores will affect their productive day. Try to be strict with yourself and stick to your work tasks as you would in the office. Leave the rest of the entertainment and tasks for after work.
With many thousands of people now working from home amid the coronavirus outbreak, we share some tips for success. The aim is to try to avoid the stresses, both mentally and physically, of sharing your new work space with other people, whether your partner, other adults or children. If you live alone, finding the peace and space to work in your home environment will not be so difficult but there will be other potential issues, such as loneliness, anxiety and too many distractions.Try to stay in touch with colleagues virtually.
It is important to find a space – a room where you can shut the door if possible – to work. If you need to work at a computer, you should try to set it up as you would at work. Think how you are sitting as you use your computer. There are plenty of help guides online. Take regular breaks from your screen and don’t be tempted to spend these breaks staring at your computer for longer
in a bid to consume news and information. Draw up a working timetable. This is especially important if you have children at home. Can you take it in turns with your partner to work and look after the kids? If you have older children, show them your new work timetable and tell them why it needs to be respected. Try to stick to your usual routine and encourage your kids to do the same. See our article about useful resources for activities for children on page 30.
Make it clear to other people in the house that when you are in your home office or office space, you are working. They should respect your need for quiet and to concentrate. Wearing headphones and playing calming background music might help. If people need to ask you something, you can request they do so by text, Whatsapp or another on-line message service. This way you can keep work and home life as separate as possible. While working from home might be difficult for many people, you can rejoice in small silver linings, such as leaving the office clothes in the wardrobe and not bothering to brush your hair.

STEELE’S RALLYING CALL TO SONS A SERVICE THAT PUTS PEOPLE FIRST Many elderly people can certainly do with a helping hand these days, and one group doing more than most to provide just that is Lomond and Clyde Care and Repair.
Dumbarton FC has obviously been hit hard, along with every other club in Scotland, but chairman John Steele wants all fans to keep closely in touch with developments.
The charity offers advice, repair and security help for the over60’s and disabled residents in West Dunbartonshire – and, via the social work team, both advice and assistance to help them improve or adapt their homes.
He said of the current situation: “We realise that this is an unprecedented situation which is relevant to the health and wellbeing of us all. “This matters more than any game of football, and realistically the decision was the only one possible. “Even though we are out of match action until we are told otherwise, your support remains vital to the club as much as ever”. He added: “We are currently in discussions about how to manage the situation during the enforced break, and will keep you posted on what our plans are and how you can be part of them.
“In the meantime, while your scarves can stay on their pegs for the next while, we look forward to retaining your continued support. Your input remains hugely important.
Its fully qualified tradesmen carry out minor repairs free – you only pay for materials – and happily carry out small but essential tasks, like putting up a shelf or changing a lightbulb, which can be hazardous for some. Service manager Elizabeth Eadie explains: “Our main aim is to help
elderly or disabled residents feel as safe and secure as we possibly can and help them retain as much independence as possible. “We don’t want people ever to get caught out by a bogus caller, or someone who is going to take advantage, so we are proud to be on hand to offer help and support.” Lomond and Clyde Care and Repair also offers a home safety security audit. To find out more about Lomond and Clyde Care and Repair, or to make a donation to the charity, call 01389 734188.
“Most of all, though, we hope you will stay safe and well as the COVID-19 outbreak continues to rule our day-today lives.” You can keep up to speed with news from Dumbarton FC at www.dumbartonfootballclub. com.

SEARCH FOR THE BRUCE’S HOME TIPS FOR STAYING FIT AT HOME Staying at home indoors for weeks during the Covid-19 crisis it is important to stay as fit and healthy as you can. Here are some useful tips for home-based fitness. Climb the stairs: Stair climbing works your heart, lungs and leg muscles. Push walls: Pushing against something that won't move while you also don't move creates an isometric contraction of the muscle, which helps to maintain muscle mass. Lift weights: Use a rucksack filled with books to do squats and lunges or utilise food products such as tins of beans for arms based exercises. E-classes: There are a host of on-line fitness workouts and yoga sessions to be found on-line.
We know that after an action-packed life of warfare and high politics King Robert I of Scotland (“the Bruce”) retired to somewhere near Dumbarton – possibly Cardross – but exactly where? That is a vexed question, and one which if ever definitely proved, or even found, would push the Dumbarton area massively up the list of most important must-see sites in the whole of Scotland.
the Bruce’s most important allies, notably the House of Somerled, that is its derivative Clan Donald, and also the powerful MacRuaridhs and their fleet of galleys.
There are many theories, and this month’s Lennox Heritage Society examines some of the most fascinating – while tracing some of the great events of his era which shaped Scottish history during its most turbulent years.
These days we might think of somewhere like Cardross as out of the way, but in the 14th century it was both largely Gaelic speaking and closely linked to Celtic communities in places as diverse as Galloway and Ireland.
We know, for example, that he maintained a birlinn, or West Highland galley, at this residence – which may have been some sort of country retreat along the lines of a Russian dacha rather than a spectacular palace. He may even have spent some leisurely hours engaged in a spot of fishing. But there was much more to it than that, because the Clyde was the maritime superhighway of medieval Scotland, linking Central Scotland with the heartlands of

Paul Hunter and Sarah Home will shed more light on the fascinating what-ifs of this supposed “retirement home” at the Society talk, keep an eye out on their facebook page for the rescheduled date.
From his out-of-town residence King Robert would receive a continual stream of information from all of his Gaelic allies through messages and envoys arriving by boat – and
COVID-19 HEALTH ADVICE With the UK in high alert because of the Covid-19 pandemic, it’s vital that we all remain vigilant to the latest health advice. The advice by NHS Scotland and the UK government as we went to press was to stay at home if you have coronavirus symptoms, including a high temperature and a new continuous cough. You should not go to a GP surgery, pharmacy or hospital and you do not need to contact 111 to tell them you're staying at home. If you have symptoms, you should stay at home for seven days. if you live with other people, they should stay at home for 14 days from the day the first person got symptoms. If you live with someone who is 70 or over, has a long-term condition, is pregnant or has a weakened immune system, you
should try to find somewhere else for them to stay for 14 days. You should only seek advice via NHS 111 online if you feel you cannot cope with your symptoms at home, your condition gets worse or your symptoms do not get better after seven days. To avoid catching and spreading the coronavirus, the public should aim to avoid socialising
as much as possible, especially in indoor places. This is particularly important for people who are aged 70 or over, have a longterm health condition, or are pregnant. The key actions to take include washing your hands with soap and water often; covering your mouth and nose with a tissue or your sleeve (not your hands)

when you cough or sneeze; putting used tissues in the bin immediately and washing your hands afterwards; avoiding close contact with people who have symptoms of coronavirus; only travelling on public transport if you need to; and working from home if you can. Hope for the best... but we must prepare for the worst.
N
obody likes to think about their own mortality, and that's why so many people go without basic estate planning documents like Wills and Powers of Attorney! Unfortunately, it can take an event like a funeral, or relative going into care as a wake-up call to make us act to protect ourselves and our families. With the world in the grip of the coronavirus many of our Clients tell us that they have now been forced to consider securing their finances and welfare. Although, the most important thing for us all to do right now is take proper care of ourselves and our nearest and dearest, we must consider being proactive in arranging important documents. Most people are only too aware of the consequences of not having a Will in place. Making sure that your assets will pass to the loved ones you want to receive them after your death is critical during crisis times. You don't want to make things any more difficult than they need to be, and avoiding costly and time-consuming processes like probate takes on heightened importance when your family might end up confined to their homes in a quarantine situation.
Tony Marchi, principal at ILAWSScotland says: “A Will is something almost everyone knows they need however, some people are still unaware of the importance of granting Power of Attorney and, among those who are aware, there is a common misconception that they don’t need to appoint an attorney as they still have full capacity.” However, you can only grant a Power of Attorney if you have capacity. If you have an accident or an ongoing medical problem, which leaves you incapable of looking after your own affairs, it’s too late. Several regions in Scotland, through the NHS, have now formally announced that if you are un able to make your own medical decisions, then your spouse of family will not be allowed to make them for you without a Power of Attorney in place. A recent campaign in partnership between a number of Health and Social Care Partnerships in Scotland, including the three in Tayside have taken to television advertising to try to get the message across. Sally Wilson, who is working on the project with colleagues in Tayside said, “Many people are unaware that
without Power of Attorney you cannot act for your husband, wife, mother, father or anyone else should they lose capacity.” Tony adds: “Incapacity in many peoples eyes involves something very serious along the lines of Dementia, Alzheimer’s or commas, however, something as simple as you being too medicated or you having
too high a temperature is enough for you to be declared incapax (incapacitated).” Power of Attorney also allows, with your permission, someone else to be able to handle your financial affairs if you are too ill or unable to get out and about. This includes paying bills, dealing with the bank, insurances and pensions.
Right now the message couldn’t be clearer. We all hope for the best, but it’s just prudent to ensure that we and our families are properly protected. Important Facts

CAST CALL OUT FOR TV SHOW A popular TV show has announced it is casting in Glasgow for a forthcoming series.
KEEPING UP TO DATE LOCAL INFORMATION
Couples Come Dine With Me, which is broadcast on Channel 4, is keen to receive applications for the 2020 series. The show, which was first broadcast in 2014, sees three couples competing for a chance to win a prize of £1000. Couples Come Dine With Me is set to return this year, although no filming will take place while the Covid-19 crisis is on-going.
All casting will take place remotely. To apply, see itvuk.etribez. com/ag/itvmultistory/ cdwmcouples6/welcome.html and complete the form. A spokesperson from the company that creates the show said: “We are really keen to hear from couples who would like to play a part in the next Couples Come Dine with Me series.
“We hope to get the cast ready to go so when everything is calmer in relation to the virus pandemic so we can then start filming as soon as possible.” Couples Come Dine With Me features couples working together to plan a perfect dinner. From deciding the menu and entertainment to table arrangement, they compete with other teams to win the highest scores and the prize.

10K SERIES ‘LATER THIS YEAR’ Local runners will be disappointed by news that a series of three popular 10k events has been postponed. However, organisers of this year’s Babcock 10k Series are keen to reschedule the road races that take place in and around Glasgow. The races had been due to take place next month, including the Babcock Helensburgh 10k on Thursday May 7 and the Babcock Dumbarton 10k on May 14, both at at 7.30pm, as well as the Babcock Shettleston 10k in Glasgow on Sunday May 31 at 10am. Organisers hope that the series, which has been affected by the impact of the coronavirus pandemic, will now take place in September. A spokesperson for the 10k series said: “The decision to postpone the three races was taken based upon advice from the Scottish Government and, in turn, from Scottish Athletics.
“It also takes into account the fact that local authorities have cancelled all bookings for their facilities for the foreseeable future, as well as the need to protect the resources of medical service providers and the emergency services for greater priorities.” All entries for the 10k races can be carried forward to the new dates and anyone unable to take
part as a result of the change in dates can request a refund or a rollover to next year’s series. A 10k remains a great goal for people of all fitness levels. Hopefully, people will still be able to get outdoors for training runs or maybe you have access to a treadmill indoors. Your Community Advertiser has published training programmes
to suit beginner, intermediate and advanced runners. The programmes, written by GB Olympic marathon runner Sonia Samuels, offer a 10-week build up to running a 10k. See www. communityadvertiser.co.uk/ training.html Keep an eye on babcock10kseries.co.uk for further information about the new race dates.

EMERGENCY TRAIN TIMETABLES Train service providers have issued a revised timetable to allow for the provision of transport for people delivering essential services.
TAKE A WALK ON THE WILD SIDE Starting on May 1 RSPB Scotland Loch Lomond begins a whole programme of exclusive walking tours at High Wards Farm at Gartocharn, with plenty to see and do. Those taking part will have their own guide to help them spot the myriad forms of local wildlife while discovering the unique history and management of the reserve. If you’ve a specific interest – birdlife, most obviously, but it could be insects, frogs, etc - your guide will tailor the experience for you, or alternatively you can enjoy just taking in the detail of “a little bit of everything”. You'll get behind the scenes access to some of the areas normally difficult to get to and your guide will be able to answer your
DELIVERY STAFF WANTED Deliver once a month in your area Good rates of pay Various runs, various hours
questions so that you can “discover RSPB Loch Lomond your way”. Anyone interested in taking part in what will be an excursion of three to four hours is asked to book around a fortnight in advance, to avoid disappointment – so this month is the ideal time to get in touch.
Amid the Covid-19 crisis, staff availability in ScotRail and Network Rail Scotland has been affected, as well as customer demand, which means that changes to the timetable were deemed necessary. It was explained that the timetable that will operate for customers represents significant change from the normal daily timetable, with a specific focus to deliver an effective public transport service for key workers. Reducing the number of trains in service creates opportunities for additional cleaning activities on trains, and in depots, and allows more targeted cleaning at stations.
