Helensburgh’s favourite feline fundraiser has added another £100 to the Community Advertiser George-O-Meter charity campaign. With likes on Facebook now having passed 3,900, it means George and the Burgh’s supportive businesses have raised a total of £400 for Cats Protection and Alzheimer Scotland’s Dementia Resource Centre in Helensburgh. This month’s generous donor is Hood Skip Hire, with its buff skips and their red and white marks a familiar sight for all manner of recycling, clearance and construction projects.
George’s latest antics have included receiving penpal letters from fans in the US and ambushing Helensburgh resident Ian Douglas and his dog Skye at Tesco. Ian wrote an apology for trespassing at George’s favourite store.

George also had an encounter with local dog walker Wendy Robinson, who was thrilled to finally meet him, and he has been spotted checking out BT’s Openreach work.

Here are some useful tips for home-based fitness. Climb the stairs: Stair climbing works your heart, lungs and leg muscles. Push walls: Pushing against something that won't move while you also don't move creates an isometric contraction of the muscle, which helps to maintain muscle mass. Lift weights: Use a rucksack filled with books to do squats and lunges or utilise food products such as tins of beans for arms based exercises. E-classes: There are a host of on-line fitness workouts and yoga sessions to be found on-line.

With the UK in high alert because of the Covid-19 pandemic, it’s vital that we all remain vigilant to the latest health advice. The advice by NHS Scotland and the UK government as we went to press was to stay at home if you have coronavirus symptoms, including a high temperature and a new continuous cough. You should not go to a GP surgery, pharmacy or hospital and you do not need to contact 111 to tell them you're staying at home. If you have symptoms, you should stay at home for seven days. if you live with other people, they should stay at home for 14 days from the day the first person got symptoms.
If you live with someone who is 70 or over, has a long-term condition, is pregnant or has a weakened immune system, you should try to find somewhere else for them to stay for 14 days. You should only seek advice via NHS 111 online if you feel you cannot cope with your symptoms at home, your condition gets worse or your symptoms do not get better after seven days. To avoid catching and spreading the coronavirus, the public should aim to avoid socialising as much as possible, especially in
The key actions to take include washing your hands with soap and water often; covering your mouth and nose with a tissue or your sleeve (not your hands) when you cough or sneeze; putting used tissues in the bin immediately and washing your hands afterwards; avoiding close contact with people who have symptoms of coronavirus; only travelling on public transport if you need to; and working from home if you can. See www.hps.scot.nhs.uk for the latest advice.

SPRING CONCERT PREMIERE
A new song about an eccentric Portincaple couple, Susie and Jimmy Reid who lived in an upturned boat, has been created as part of a forthcoming concert by the Peninsula Choir. The song, Susie’s Castle, has been composed by Stephen Adam with words by choir member Eleanor Ironside. The concert was planned for this month (April 18) at Cove Burgh Hall but it is likely to be affected by the Covid-19 situation.
EMERGENCY TRAIN TIMETABLES Train service providers have issued a revised timetable to allow for the provision of transport for people delivering essential services. Amid the Covid-19 crisis, staff availability in ScotRail and Network Rail Scotland has been affected, as well as customer demand, which means that changes to the timetable were deemed necessary.
affected by the impact of the coronavirus, revising services also accommodates infrastructure changes and allows safety critical roles to be performed across the country.
It was explained that the timetable that will operate for customers represents significant change from the normal daily timetable, with a specific focus to deliver an effective public transport service for key workers.
It is believed that the service level will deliver more than enough seats to meet the current demand levels and the timetable will be kept under regular review to react to any further developments.
Reducing the number of trains in service creates opportunities for additional cleaning activities on trains, and in depots, and allows more targeted cleaning at stations. With more railway staff being
David Simpson, ScotRail Operations Director, said: “We are facing an unprecedented challenge on Scotland’s Railway and the revised timetable will help to provide a critical service for the key workers across the country.
Please keep an eye on coveburghhall.org.uk to find out when – and if – the concert will be rescheduled.

TRUST’S WORK FOR WALKERS A voluntary group is keen to encourage more people to head out for a walk, run or bike ride on local trails in 2020. Over the past 15 years, the Helensburgh and District Access Trust has worked to surface – and re-surface – many local paths, as well as creating bridges, erecting signposts and repairing drainage issues. In addition, they have produced several good resources for discovering the trails, such as a local Footpath Map and a Three Lochs Way booklet, which gives a detailed guide to the route from Balloch to Inveruglas. The trust’s newest publication is a Scotways leaflet to explain the access rights of walkers. Norman Rodger, a trustee of the
group, said: “Thanks to the work of volunteers and the leaflets and guides, the paths can be used year round. We hope that these paths will be used by more people for the benefit of their health, including walkers, joggers and mountain bikers.” The trust is also keen to hear from anyone locally who would like to volunteer to help with on-going work. Use of the paths means they require constant attention, such as renewing surfaces, clearing blocked drains and cutting back overgrowing vegetation. Norman said: “Anyone can help
with our work, even if they can only do the minimum of physical work. The more people we have the easier the manual work becomes.” The trust has benefitted from support form the council and the Community Payback Team in getting and spreading road scalpings. Grants from national and local sources, such as SNH and the Round Table, have allowed for larger scale work to be undertaken. To donate to the trust see: threelochsway.co.uk/about-us/ donate.

U-TURN ON CENTRE CLOSURE A local outdoor education facility has been saved from closure after a council U-turn.
TAKE CARE OF MENTAL HEALTH The Covid-19 outbreak will affect people in different ways but many will feel anxious or stressed about the situation. In addition, extended periods at home in isolation will add to many people’s mental health issues.
Staff at Blairvadach Outdoor Education Centre, on the shore of Gare Loch in Rhu, had been told the facility would close to save costs as part of Glasgow City Council's budget. The centre offers week-long residential courses for Glasgow pupils so they can experience outdoor activities. However, a public outcry saw a petition to save the centre gather 12,000 signatures. Now it has been reported that Blairvadach, which was opened in 1974, has been saved following the Scottish government's budget deal with the Scottish Green Party, which means an extra £95 million will be given to local authorities. Glasgow council's £10.6 million share has given Blairvadach a lifeline. But Chris Cunningham, the council's convener for

education, said the centre's future was "not sustainable under present arrangements". He said: “Simply saving Blairvadach for another year is not enough in itself. We now have the time and space to explore alternatives to its current arrangements. “What they may be is something we'll have to work through but we're already exploring what options are best to deliver the investment Blairvadach needs for both residential and outdoor learning.”
There is a range of advice to help you to stay mindfully strong. Take breaks from watching, reading or listening to news stories, including social media. Hearing about the pandemic repeatedly can be upsetting. Make time to unwind by doing yoga, meditating, reading a book or listening to calming music. Stay connected with others. Talk with people you trust on-line or on the phone about your concerns and how you are feeling.

GET SOME FRESH AIR As we went to press the advice from experts was to try to get outdoors for regular exercise where possible. If you have been infected by Covid-19 or you are selfisolating because someone close to you is infected you should be very cautious about spending time outdoors with other people. For those still well, accessing quiet trails or hills and mountains that you are familiar with is a good idea. It is important not to go anywhere or do anything new or excessive that might lead to an accident because this will add strain to an already overstretched medical service. Commonsense is paramount but fresh air is good for you.

Come to see the beautiful flowering magnolias
A woodland garden in Rhu is keen to encourage people to see their beautiful flowering magnolias this month. Mike and Sue Thornley, the owners of private Glenarn Gardens, believe the huge tree magnolias will be at their most stunning around Easter time. This winter, Sue and Mike report that they have been clearing some areas where trees have come down to make room for new plantings and to give increased protection against the winds. The gardens are described as having a Himalayan atmosphere. They are also famous for a collection of rhododendrons. Glenarn was established in the

Scotland’s National Chef and winner of MasterChef the Professionals, Gary Maclean, was one of the judges. Royal Navy chefs from Clyde, Devonport and Portsmouth went head-to-head to serve a three-
course meal in front of a panel of expert judges. The winning Clyde team cooked pollock with curried mussels to start, followed by duck breast with roasted root vegetables. They completed the meal with a dessert of caramelised pear and gorgonzola ice-cream. Submariner chef Nathan Elson said: “As a team we were really

Examples include receptionists, delivery drivers, hospital porters and managers, as well as nurses, doctors and other clinicians. Times like this allow us to recognise the important contribution all the team members can make, especially when working to the top of their abilities. As we have never experienced anything like
this in living memory, we are having to be creative about our approach, and behind the scenes a lot of work is going in GP Practices and hospitals to keep up with a rapidly changing situation. This can all be very unsettling for patients, with many consultations taking place over the phone or by video, and receptionists being trained to ask more questions, and give advice, than previously. However please be aware that patient care remains our biggest priority, and that we rely on the community to be considerate to one another at these difficult times.

HCWG BIDS FOR LAND
HCWG has submitted two applications to Scottish Ministers, one for Castle Woods and the other for former woodland at Cumberland Avenue, both in Helensburgh. EGG-STRAVAGANZA
OF FACTS
Easter is considered the most important and oldest festival of the Christian Church, celebrating the resurrection of Christ and held between March 21 and April 25. Over the centuries, many Easter traditions have developed, including eating chocolate eggs, dyeing and decorating eggs, egg hunts, hot cross buns and the Easter bunny.
Here are 13 interesting facts and fun statistics related to Easter. 1. Historians think that Easter was named after a festival celebrating Eostre and the coming of spring. Her sacred symbols are thought to have been the hare and the egg. 2. The American tradition of the Easter bunny delivering decorated eggs to well-behaved children is actually thought
to have originated in Germany during the Middle Ages. Dutch settlers in Pennsylvania brought the bunny to the United States in the 1700s. 3. The Guinness World record for the tallest chocolate Easter egg is held by Italy. The egg measured 10.39 m and was recorded at Le

LOCAL INFORMATION In light of the recent Coronavirus situation, most local councils have set up dedicated support pages on their main websites, with the aim of bringing communities the most up to date and relevant information, and to provide support for responses in a safe manner. These are updated continuously, reflecting current events and the ever changing local and national government advice. Please visit your local councils support page if you are needing any support, as these all provide direction to any services that are remaining open to provide their resources if in need. Your local website can be found at www.argyll-bute. gov.uk/coronavirus-helpand-advice.
SHEENAH WINS TOP ACCOLADE A woman from Cardross has won a prestigious national award for her service to the community. Sheenah Nelson has been honoured by Rotary in Great Britain and Ireland with a Champions of Change award. Champions of Change are part of Rotary’s Champions Awards, which annually recognise the outstanding humanitarian and community service of volunteers. Sheenah, who is a member of Helensburgh Garelochside Rotary Club, is among 12 winners nationwide. Sheenah is recognised for her tireless campaigning to make the public aware of the need to take action and improve survival rates following heart attacks and cardiac arrests.
During this unprecedented time of Covid-19 I thought it would be of assistance to remind people about the availability of financial assistance for legal issues from the Scottish Legal Aid Board (SLAB) and the application process. Public funding is available through SLAB for individuals to receive legal advice and assistance, or representation, for civil and criminal matters concerning Scots law. Legal Aid is available to individuals over the age of sixteen and also those under sixteen years of age who are able to provide legal instructions to a solicitor. There are, of course, restrictions to financial eligibility, depending on any savings you may have
and also your weekly disposable income. According to SLAB, 75% of Scottish adults would qualify for civil legal aid. It may be that this would be with a contribution. However, that contribution is usually paid by way of monthly instalments and ensures that access to legal advice is affordable to those who require it. At this time, face to face appointments with a solicitor may not be possible and as a result SLAB have allowed for Legal aid applications to be lodged without the requirement of signature by the applicant. We suggest you contact your own solicitor for further guidance if you do require legal assistance and are unable to personally attend for an appointment.

PARK CALL FOR VOLUNTEERS The Friends of Hermitage Park are keen to encourage budding gardeners to volunteer for a variety of regular events this summer.
New “Sundays with Stewart” will take place every second Sunday and, from early May, there will be a “Wednesday Weeders” group, too.
In addition, Hermitage Primary School’s Forest School has been working hard to prepare the flower beds in the park every week since January.
After a period of restoration, the park in Helensburgh requires a wide range of gardening work to provide year-round colour and beauty.
All ages and abilities are welcome to join the volunteer sessions and full training is provided. Tasks are allocated to suit to age and ability.
The Friends are also open to ideas from local groups that want to incorporate a gardening session into their activities.
The spokesperson added: “The sessions are a great opportunity for people to learn gardening skills, as well as contributing to developing and helping plant up the park.”
For the dates and times of the gardening volunteer work parties contact the Friends via their Facebook page “Helensburgh Hermitage Park”. You can also email: fionabakerrhu@gmail.com.
A spokesperson for the Friends said: “After the seemingly unending construction work at the park, we are excited to finally reach the point where we can get on with replanting.
“There is an awful lot to do with the development of the kitchen garden and planting the orchard, as well as digging, weeding and planting up flower beds; planting the tropical and Japanese gardens; and developing the pond and bog gardens.” Volunteers can join Friends’ Action Days on the afternoon of the third Thursday every month.

Thousands of volunteers across the UK have set up groups to assist those who are most vulnerable during the Covid-19 pandemic. Self-quarantine can be a difficult experience for those who struggle with their mobility, health problems and those living on their own. The help groups offer their time to run errands for those in need, such as to buy groceries and pick up prescriptions, and also to chat on the phone if people are anxious or lonely. A UK-wide #viralkindness campaign has also been launched by a woman in Cornwall. Becky Wass came up with the idea to create shareable cards that allow people to offer help to their neighbours. The postcards read: “Hello! If you are self-isolating, I can help.” The cards have spaces for a name, address, phone number and possible tasks that the
recipient might need help with. In Scotland, a support service has been set up and with a website, www.viralkindness. scot. Many help groups have been launched on Facebook and also via Whatsapp messages. A group called Helping Helensburgh has been formed to help those in self-isolation because of the Covid-19 pandemic.
The group has been set up by a group of friends on Facebook and can be utilised like a noticeboard. Requests by local people for help should be posted on the page – please do not post personal details – and someone will respond with help. If you have the time to help, why not set up you own support network and contact your neighbours to see if they need support?

TIPS FOR SUCCESSFUL HOME WORKING For some people, the distractions of TV, social media and even doing household chores will affect their productive day. Try to be strict with yourself and stick to your work tasks as you would in the office. Leave the rest of the entertainment and tasks for after work.
With many thousands of people now working from home amid the coronavirus outbreak, we share some tips for success. The aim is to try to avoid the stresses, both mentally and physically, of sharing your new work space with other people, whether your partner, other adults or children. If you live alone, finding the peace and space to work in your home environment will not be so difficult but there will be other potential issues, such as loneliness, anxiety and too many distractions.Try to stay in touch with colleagues virtually.
It is important to find a space – a room where you can shut the door if possible – to work. If you need to work at a computer, you should try to set it up as you would at work. Think how you are sitting as you use your computer. There are plenty of help guides online. Take regular breaks from your screen and don’t be tempted to spend these breaks staring at your computer for longer
in a bid to consume news and information. Draw up a working timetable. This is especially important if you have children at home. Can you take it in turns with your partner to work and look after the kids? If you have older children, show them your new work timetable and tell them why it needs to be respected. Try to stick to your usual routine and encourage your kids to do the same. See our article about useful resources for activities for children on page 22.
Make it clear to other people in the house that when you are in your home office or office space, you are working. They should respect your need for quiet and to concentrate. Wearing headphones and playing calming background music might help. If people need to ask you something, you can request they do so by text, Whatsapp or another on-line message service. This way you can keep work and home life as separate as possible. While working from home might be difficult for many people, you can rejoice in small silver linings, such as leaving the office clothes in the wardrobe and not bothering to brush your hair.

SCOUTS PUT ON A DISPLAY They report: “Our objectives include showing the general public why Scouting remains popular with young people – and the opportunities it makes available. “We also want to show how an organisation as big as the Scouts can evolve to reflect changing popular culture and modern technology without changing its main activities and values. And we are keen to inspire our members, both young and old, to continue to build the movement and particularly to play a part in International Scouting.”
and District, it is estimated that more than 7000 young people in the area have become Cubs and Scouts.
The exhibition, which is hoped will open soon in the main hall at the Clyde Street Centre, will reveal the way the movement has evolved, while also celebrating Scouting today.
As part of the exhibition, there will be a continuous display of photos from 1913 to today. The year and location of some of these are vague and the organisers will be pleased to hear from anyone who has any information on them. Similarly they will be grateful for more old photographs, artefacts or memories of Scouting from more than 50 years ago.
Over that time, Scouting has changed with new programmes, badges, activities and uniforms.
The organisers are Sandy Kerr and Geoff Riddington, both senior figures in local Scouting.
For more information please email Riddington89@hotmail. com.
The evolution of the uniform and scouting for all
A new heritage display that aims to showcase the movement of Scouting in Helensburgh and District is set to launch this summer. The free exhibition, hosted by Helensburgh Heritage Society, will look back at 110 years of the Scout and Cubs' movement locally. Ever since the first Scout patrols were formed in Helensburgh
However, the core activities of camping and service remain almost unchanged.

BLOWING AWAY THE REST A Helensburgh musician is set to take Japan by storm after reaching the final of an esteemed international trombone competition. Angus Butt, 20, who attended Hermitage Academy, will perform in the International Trombone Association Quartet Competition Final. He beat hundreds of other musicians in the preliminary video rounds and made the final three with his band members who make up “Bone-afide”. The group, including musicians who are all studying at top institutions in London, will go up against quartets from Norway and Japan in the final in Osaka this July. Angus, currently in third year at the Royal Academy of Music in London, has performed in a number of countries across the world but has never visited Japan. He said: “I was very surprised and excited when I found out that we

had made the final. Japan is an incredible country that I’ve always wanted to visit. To be in the final of an international competition will make the trip even better.” Music has long been part of Angus’s life. He said: “Music was always been around me. It was just a hobby when I was younger but from the age of 13 I became more curious about the world of music.”
Music has also taken Angus all over the world. He has toured China, Oman, Russia, Canada, Cuba and most of Europe.
will receive money from our institutions and we are also putting on many fundraising concerts.”
The group are in need of funds to make the trip. Angus said: “The competition does not pay for any expenses, including accommodation and travel, so the quartet has to find £5000 to get there and back. We

‘PLEASE KEEP US KILTWALKING’ This year’s Glasgow Kiltwalk has been postponed indefinitely for all the obvious reasons – but key mover Sir Tom Hunter has launched a special appeal to supporters. He is in the agonising position of having to disappoint potentially hundreds of walkers and also find a way through the problem that will keep the funds it raises for charities coming in.
However all registrations and fundraising will carry over to the new date as “we are acutely aware of the impact of the Kiltwalk fundraising on your chosen charities”.
In the light of the current situation, organisers have made the difficult but well-considered decision to postpone the Glasgow Kiltwalk on April 26.
Sir Tom and the organising team know the event is more than just a bit of fun that raises useful funds for charities – in these straitened times it is a lifeline that has garnered impressive support across the community.
The health and well-being of the public and the Kiltwalk community is at the forefront of this decision which is line with Government and NHS advice.
That being the case, this month’s event is off, but it’s certainly not over. Sir Tom says: “We aim to restage

the Glasgow Kiltwalk as soon as possible, however that looks like a long time away for charities in need of much support right now. “So our Number One objective is to raise funds now and get them to those who need it most as quickly as possible. “So firstly, if you can, please keep registering and fundraising for all of our walks.
“Secondly, please keep registering and fundraising for the Glasgow Kiltwalk and we will add the 50% Hunter Foundation bonus to your fundraising totals as of 31st of March and pay the funds out as quickly as we can to your charities.” You can keep up to date with the Kiltwalk appeal’s progress now and in the testing weeks ahead at www.thekiltwalk.co.uk/news.

THE CAMPING SEASON IS OPEN Wild camping is a thing of the past, but while the major changes brought in at the National Park are fairly recent not everyone has got the message. Camping season is upon us and this summer you may be considering a camping break, as in the less heavily used spots there really is a chance to get away from it all at a time when more urban forms of entertainment and relaxation are increasingly restricted. But most of us have seen the carnage the more thoughtless campers used to create in the past, some of it unmentionable, and for that reason a rigorous
control regime was introduced which sets limits on where and how you can pitch your tent. There’s a whole argument about freedom of movement, with many perfectly responsible people furious that what used to be a largely restriction-free pursuit is now closely monitored and managed. As against that the Park authorities can point to the damage done by the minority, who treat the area’s prime

recreation asset with contempt and spoil it for everyone else. The old easygoing approach to camping is no longer sustainable, perhaps at least partly due to the increasing numbers arriving in the summer months. While organised campsites are not everyone’s cup of tea they do come with the advantage of clearly set-out rules, and are part of a wider plan to weed out the troublemakers and litter louts. The arguments will continue, but
the regime is in force, and the camping booking season for the reason running to September is now open. Campers are asked to consider planning their trip to the National Park by booking their permit area of campsite pitch at Loch Chon, Loch Achray or Inchcalloch in advance. From start to finish Richard, Martin and team were fantastic. I remember on the first day of one of several meetings saying to Martin how refreshing their approach to the sale was and that was what sealed our business. They are honest and professional. The fit was completed in the three days as promised and the team were superb. Absolutely delighted with the outcome. There were minor teething problems but the speed at which my calls were dealt with and the team got things sorted was first class service. Would highly recommend.

DON’T FALL FOR THE VIRUS FRAUD
SUPERMARKET SHUTS
Local residents are being warned not to be duped by cynical scams that are already said to have cost victims more than £800,000 across the UK. “By doing simple things such as checking the address of the email sender, or by checking the URL link before visiting the website, users can significantly reduce the risks of being caught out.”
The Scottish Business Resilience Centre is highlighting fraud attempts which exploit the fears of COVID-19 by sending out coronavirus-themed phishing emails which falsely claim to be from a reliable source.
for as much as £15,000 in one case.
In fact they aim to gain personal information and financial details, and to trick people into opening malicious attachments.
Ian Stephen, Head of Business Resilience with the SBRC, said: “It was a matter of time before coronavirus was used as a trigger, with scams likely to to rise in numbers as the disease continues to spread across the globe.
Although the majority of people would ignore these emails, it is feared the panic surrounding coronavirus may persuade some they are genuine.
The emails claim affiliation with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the World Health Organisation (WHO). The scammers claim to be able to provide the recipient with a list of people in their region affected by coronavirus, should the recipient click on a link to access the information. However, the links lead to a malicious website – or alternatively victims may be asked to make a payment in Bitcoin. Multiple victims have also attempted to purchase protective face masks from fraudulent sellers

Waitrose in Helensburgh is to close with more than 120 full and part-time jobs affected. The move has come after the John Lewis Partnership confirmed it had taken the decision to sell its lease on the store. Two stores in England will also shut. Waitrose and Partners’ regional manager Peter Ibbotson said: “The sale of our shop in Helensburgh is not something we take lightly.
“Don’t be complacent either. These fraudulent emails are often highly convincing, but they do present tell-tale signs about their true nature which can act as strong warning signs.
“But we’ve sadly not been able to find a way to make the shop commercially sustainable in the longterm.” The company has not confirmed who has bought the lease.

10K SERIES ‘LATER THIS YEAR’ Local runners will be disappointed by news that a series of three popular 10k events has been postponed. However, organisers of this year’s Babcock 10k Series are keen to reschedule the road races that take place in and around Glasgow. The races had been due to take place next month, including the Babcock Helensburgh 10k on Thursday May 7 and the Babcock Dumbarton 10k on May 14, both at at 7.30pm, as well as the Babcock Shettleston 10k in Glasgow on Sunday May 31 at 10am. Organisers hope that the series, which has been affected by the impact of the coronavirus pandemic, will now take place in September. A spokesperson for the 10k series said: “The decision to postpone the three races was taken based upon advice from the Scottish Government and, in turn, from Scottish Athletics.
“It also takes into account the fact that local authorities have cancelled all bookings for their facilities for the foreseeable future, as well as the need to protect the resources of medical service providers and the emergency services for greater priorities.” All entries for the 10k races can be carried forward to the new dates and anyone unable to take
part as a result of the change in dates can request a refund or a rollover to next year’s series. A 10k remains a great goal for people of all fitness levels. Hopefully, people will still be able to get outdoors for training runs or maybe you have access to a treadmill indoors. Your Community Advertiser has published training programmes
to suit beginner, intermediate and advanced runners. The programmes, written by GB Olympic marathon runner Sonia Samuels, offer a 10-week build up to running a 10k. See www. communityadvertiser.co.uk/ training.html Keep an eye on babcock10kseries.co.uk for further information about the new race dates.

Hope for the best... but we must prepare for the worst.
N
obody likes to think about their own mortality, and that's why so many people go without basic estate planning documents like Wills and Powers of Attorney! Unfortunately, it can take an event like a funeral, or relative going into care as a wake-up call to make us act to protect ourselves and our families. With the world in the grip of the coronavirus many of our Clients tell us that they have now been forced to consider securing their finances and welfare. Although, the most important thing for us all to do right now is take proper care of ourselves and our nearest and dearest, we must consider being proactive in arranging important documents. Most people are only too aware of the consequences of not having a Will in place. Making sure that your assets will pass to the loved ones you want to receive them after your death is critical during crisis times. You don't want to make things any more difficult than they need to be, and avoiding costly and time-consuming processes like probate takes on heightened importance when your family might end up confined to their homes in a quarantine situation.
Tony Marchi, principal at ILAWSScotland says: “A Will is something almost everyone knows they need however, some people are still unaware of the importance of granting Power of Attorney and, among those who are aware, there is a common misconception that they don’t need to appoint an attorney as they still have full capacity.” However, you can only grant a Power of Attorney if you have capacity. If you have an accident or an ongoing medical problem, which leaves you incapable of looking after your own affairs, it’s too late. Several regions in Scotland, through the NHS, have now formally announced that if you are unable to make your own medical decisions, then your spouse of family will not be allowed to make them for you without a Power of Attorney in place. A recent campaign in partnership between a number of Health and Social Care Partnerships in Scotland, including the three in Tayside have taken to television advertising to try to get the message across. Sally Wilson, who is working on the project with colleagues in Tayside said, “Many people are unaware that
without Power of Attorney you cannot act for your husband, wife, mother, father or anyone else should they lose capacity.” Tony adds: “Incapacity in many peoples eyes involves something very serious along the lines of Dementia, Alzheimer’s or comas, however, something as simple as you being too medicated or you having
too high a temperature is enough for you to be declared incapax (incapacitated).” Power of Attorney also allows, with your permission, someone else to be able to handle your financial affairs if you are too ill or unable to get out and about. This includes paying bills, dealing with the bank, insurances and pensions.
Right now the message couldn’t be clearer. We all hope for the best, but it’s just prudent to ensure that we and our families are properly protected. Important Facts
