MILNGAVIE’S COLIN WINS TOP ACCOLADE Photographs © Colin Prior
Ben Lomond, Loch Lomond and the Trossachs National Park
The Cobbler and Ben Ime
A world-acclaimed landscape photographer who was born in Milngavie has been honoured with a prestigious Scottish award. Colin Prior has won the Scottish Award for Excellence in Mountain Culture 2020. The award, which is nominated by the public and his peers, is presented each year by the Fort William Mountain Festival. Previous accolades have gone to legendary mountaineer Hamish MacInnes and presenter and author Cameron McNeish. Colin Prior, 61, who now lives in Glasgow, is most famous for his landscape photography of Scotland. He discovered photography aged 23 through a fascination with the natural world. Having very little photography experience, Colin created a portfolio of images of Scotland’s
coastline and the Red Sea. He was surprised to win "best newcomer to underwater photography" in the Camera Beneath the Waves competition in 1981. Since then, he has gained a huge audience and his work has been showcased internationally. He has seven books to his name and has worked on TV documentaries featuring photography, mountains and travel. His passion for mountains and wild places is shared with others through photography workshops and tuition. Colin once said of his photography: “To know a mountain is to understand its rhythms and

then become part of them. To photograph mountains successfully demands what the Arctic Inuit refer to as ‘quinuituq’ which translated means ‘deep patience’ – literally waiting hours for one second, or in my case, years for one second."
“Colin’s work graces the walls of so many of our homes and allows us to feel and be a part of the outdoors where perhaps some are unable to go or once visited. We’re proud to welcome Colin into the Festival Ambassador Hall of Fame family.”
This year’s award is sponsored by JAHAMA Highland Estates. Chief operating officer Julia Stoddart said: “We are delighted that Colin Prior has been recognised for his inspirational work.”
See https://colinprior.co.uk.
Rod Pashley, chairman of The Highland Mountain Culture Association, organisers of last month’s Fort William Mountain Festival, said: “You’ve only got to look at the breadth of stunning landscape work that Colin has produced over the years to know the visual impact he has made on so many who love and admire our Scottish landscapes and beyond.

Grace (second left) takes the silver medal
Isla (centre) with her gold medal
MEDALS FOR SKI SISTERS Two young skiing sisters from Bearsden have returned home from the Anglo-Scottish Championships in Italy with a clutch of trophies. Grace and Isla Cameron raced in the alpine resort of Pila against skiers from Scotland and England in January. Eight-year-old Isla won gold in the slalom and silver in the Giant Slalom (GS). She also won the overall fastest under-10 girls’ category. Meanwhile Grace, 12, won silver in the slalom and was fourth in GS in the under-12 category. The sisters both started skiing aged two and then began lessons at Bearsden Ski Club (BSC) when they were four. They are now part of the club’s race team. Dad Donald said: “It was at Glencoe on snow that the girls’

passion grew for skiing. My wife and I found ourselves travelling the length and breadth of Scotland feeding their love of the sport and competing in the Scottish Alpine race circuit.” Podiums followed at each Scottish ski resort, with further success on dry ski slopes around Glasgow. Donald said: “The girls have also trained abroad in the Austrian and Italian Alps when school and parents allow and they currently train with Glasgow Ski Racing abroad.”
BUILDING
Two years ago, Grace, who attends Bearsden Academy, achieved two podiums in the English Alpine Championships in Italy. Last year, the family toured and competed in the GBR Summer Series around the UK’s ski slopes. The girls came home with two dozen medals. This season Grace and Isla, who is a pupil at St Nicholas' Primary, hope to continue to compete in the Alps, including the English Alpine Championship in Italy. Isla said: “I love going fast and racing is so much fun. I like winning.” Grace enjoys skiing because it offers the opportunity for adventures. She said: “I like skiing with my family and making new friends. I love racing and competing.”

AUSTEN NOVEL ON STAGE 12 WEEK COURSE STARTS THURSDAY, 19 MARCH 7PM-8:15 PM At the beautiful Kilmardinny House, Bearsden G61 3NN. Free Parking Learn life-long yoga skills to help you to improved comfort and health. The Kilmardinny Players will be staging Jane Austin's Sense and Sensibility this month
A local amateur dramatics group is in the final weeks of rehearsing for their spring performance of a Jane Austen classic. The Kilmardinny Players will stage Sense and Sensibility at Kilmardinny House Arts Centre on Bearsden on Thursday and Friday, March 26 and 27, at 7.30pm and then on Saturday March 28 at 2pm. Christina Dowers, chair of the Players, said: “Jane Austen’s novels have a timeless appeal. We have been enjoying the wit and irony of the plot of Jane Austen’s first published work, Sense and Sensibility, during rehearsals of this adaptation for the stage by Roger Parsley and Andy Graham.” The cast includes Elinor Dashwood played by Jenny Ryall;
Marianne Dashwood by Michelle Muirhead; Aunt Jennings by Christina; Lucy Steele by Jane MacConnacher; Colonel Brandon by Paul Cockcroft; Edward Ferrars by David Hutchinson and Willoughby by David Maclean. The play is directed by Lisa Colquhoun and Christina. Austen’s books have been adapted for stage, screen and television many times over the years. For example, an Andrew Davies’ adaptation of Pride and Prejudice was screened on TV in 1995 with Colin Firth as Mr Darcy.
Venetian • Wooden Venetian Perfect Fit Blinds • Pleated Blinds
Late last year, TV viewers enjoyed another Davies’ adaptation of Jane Austen’s Sanditon, which was an unfinished novel left at her death consisting of only 12 chapters. Fans of Austen tuned in to watch all eight episodes of this final novel. Most recently, a special 2020 Valentine’s release date saw Autumn de Wilde directing a new film of Emma at our cinemas. Christina said: “There is even a portrait of Jane Austen on Bank of England £10 notes. We hope that as many local people as possible will come along to see our latest performance this month.” Tickets can be reserved on our website at www. kilmardinnyplayers.org.

JOIN FREE MUSIC PROJECT Youngsters in East Dunbartonshire have the opportunity to sign up to a free musical programme during the Easter holidays. Milngavie Music Club and McOpera Outreach have partnered to organise the exciting project, which takes place in Milngavie from April 14 to 17. The youngsters, across a range of musical abilities, will have the chance to perform alongside some of the most talented young people in Milngavie Music Club’s programme of events, including re-creating Paul Hindemith’s 1930 mini-opera, Let’s Build a Town. Sue Baxendale, project manager at McOpera, revealed there are two opportunities to take part in the free holiday programme. She said “First, there are 40 places for children aged P7 to S1 to make music with the club. The kids will have fun learning skills in singing, acting, music and movement games. No prior experience is required. “Secondly, talented young wind players - flutes, oboes, clarinets,
bassoons and horns – have the chance to play alongside professional musicians from McOpera. They will work on music composed for this combination of instruments and also form the orchestra for a concert at Cairns Church on April 17.” The outreach programme has become an integral part of the activity of Milngavie Music Club. Hugh Macdonald, MMC president, said: “Since its foundation in 1942, Milngavie Music Club's mission has been to bring world class classical musicians to perform in our local community.
“The joy of working with McOpera on these outreach projects has been that they have extended our vision to a wider cross-section of the community, bringing talented youngsters into contact with professionals and great music in the most creative and stimulating way.” Hinrichsen Foundation and a Scotmid Community Grant will support the project. To apply for a place or ask for more information, contact suebaxendale.mcopera@gmail. com or call 07791 332420 or see www.milngaviemusic.org.

A Paisley care home is leading pioneering research into improving the care of people with dementia and sight loss. Jenny’s Well, in Hawkhead Road,Paisley is one of Scotland’s two specialist care homes for sight loss run by the charity Royal Blind. The 54-bedroom home opened in October 2017 and offers nursing care to older people with sight loss, including those with other medical needs. The home is equipped with lifeenhancing elements for older people with sight loss, including tactile signage, lighting which reduces glare, a sensory garden and onsite hairdressers and beauty treatment rooms.
Now Royal Blind has been awarded £20,000 for the project by the Life Changes Trust to research what activities in care homes people with sight loss and dementia find most rewarding, and how activities can be tailored to their needs. The team will work with residents to develop other activities that are suited to people with sight loss and dementia and share their findings with the wider care community. Morag Francis, Head of Care for Older People for Royal Blind, said:
Transform your Conservatory into an ALL YEAR round Sunroom
“Sight loss and dementia both require tailored approaches to care to ensure people living with the conditions receive the support they need. "If couples, close relatives and friends wish to move in together, only one of them needs to meet the home’s sight loss criteria." Morag added: “I would encourage anyone who is concerned about a loved one who is an older person and has a vision impairment to get in touch with the team at Jenny’s Well and see how we can help them.” Find out more about Jenny’s Well at www.jennyswell.org or call 0800 024 8973.

Hundreds of gymnasts from a local club took part in a poignant event to raise funds for the Beatson Cancer Charity. The 280 members of Allander Gymnastics Club organised the fundraiser in memory of former president and head coach Chris Rankin, who passed away last year. They were delighted to hand over a cheque for £8,928.20 to the Glasgow-based cause, which supports people affected by cancer. Jane Mclaughlin, head coach at Allander GC, said: “Chris's wish was for the club was to organise an event to raise money for Beatson Cancer Charity because he was very grateful for the care he received.
“We were very pleased by how much we have raised with our club event in December and recently his daughter Aileen and the club were able to hand over a cheque for £8,928.20 to the charity. “Chris's family were also delighted to have raised so much money in his memory.
“incredible support”. He said: "On behalf of Beatson Cancer Charity I would like to thank Allander Gymnastics Club. Without the club’s generosity, we couldn’t support the 8000 new patients and their families who walk through the doors of the Beatson West of Scotland Cancer Centre every year. “Because of this, we can say to all those patients and families, ‘We’re with you’.”
“The club would like to thank everyone involved in the event, gymnasts, coaches, judges, parents, helpers and those who donated prizes.”
Allander GC was established in 1977 and offers coaching for children aged five to 16. The club meets at Allander Leisure centre in bearsden.

March 2020 | What's Up Doc?
TAP YOUR WAY TO BETTER FITNESS What's Up Doc? with Dr Nick Dunn
This month: REACHING OUT FOR HELP... As has been recently highlighted, suicide sadly remains a significant risk in our communities.
TAPfit, a new dance fitness programme, takes place in Milngavie Town Hall
A new style of exercise class has launched in Milngavie – and the first class is free. TAPfit is a dance fitness programme that uses “Feet Beats”, which slip over shoes or trainers, to create an instant tap shoe. The classes comprise a mixture of basic tap steps and aerobic dance, as well as utilising resistance arm toners. The dance teacher is Rachel Ballard, who is delighted to be bringing TAPfit to the area. She said: “TAPfit is great fun and fantastic for all fitness levels. It increases muscle power, flexibility, balance and toning, as well as burning lots of calories.” Rachel reports that the classes are sociable, too. She said: “I love the
inclusiveness of TAPfit and it can be taught in a variety of settings, such as to dementia friendly groups, in elderly care homes or groups for young adults with additional support needs.” Research reveals the benefits of TAPfit, including a physical therapy tool to aid co-ordination, movement, timing and mobility, as well as reducing cognitive decline. TAPfit takes place in Milngavie Town Hall on Thursdays, from 7.30pm to 8.30pm. After the first free class it’s £5 for a drop-in session or £20 for a five-class booking. See www.dance-rs.com.
People continue to die as a result of feeling isolated, helpless and cornered, despite often appearing to maintain an outward appearance of coping with life, even looking successful. For many years it has been a taboo subject, leaving those behind with a sense of shame or guilt. People struggle to find the words to talk about it, with the result that the risks become magnified.
GPs are trained to talk about these difficult subjects, and offer help to those who may be considering suicide, or families and friends suffering from the after-effects which people carry with them for many years. There is no shame in talking about this and there are many people around who want to help. Often simply sharing worries and anxieties will start to lift people out of their dark thoughts, and begin a recovery. Speak to your doctor, nurse or phone the Samaritans or NHS24 if you need help. There will always be an answer.

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) focuses on challenging and changing unhelpful cognitive distortions and behaviours and has been shown to be effective for a wide range of problems. I work with individuals who are struggling with difficulties such as anxiety disorders, depression, sleep issues, eating disorders, grief, trauma and addiction and they want someone to hear their story non judgementally, empathetically and assist them with movement to change. I also work as an Alcohol Counsellor in an addiction service and in the NHS as a Telephone Cognitive Behavioural Psychotherapist, where I treat patients who are presenting with low mood, depression and anxiety. If you are struggling with your mental health, please contact me either by phone or email. I provide a free 30-minute telephone consultation. This allows you to assess if CBT would be the best therapy for you.

Planning the
Happiest Day of your life?
Some people know exactly what sort of wedding they aim to have – may even have planned it for years – while others fret over details large and small as the Big Day draws ever closer. Will it be a “cast of thousands” big production at some splendid Scottish baronial pile, or an intimate affair for a dozen people? Registry office or local pub – or how about a floating wedding on board a paddle steamer? Is it going to be a church wedding, or one where a celebrant plays a leading role?
The only problem with the infinite variety of ways in which you can celebrate what should be the most important day of your life is the difficulty of making final decisions– from where to have the actual ceremony to where you choose to stage your reception (and of course dovetailing the whole procedure with, in most cases, a honeymoon break immediately afterwards).
It may sound tiresomely sexist in this day and age, but in Scottish culture organising a wedding does seem to be overwhelmingly a female thing, with the men confining their role in proceedings to the obligatory trips to dress hire shops for kilts or whatever other ensemble they manage to agree upon (but it’s usually the full Bonnie Prince Charlie, even for people who never wear the kilt for any other kind of occasion).

The Criminal Injuries Compensation Authority, originally set up in 1964, is a government agency offering compensation to victims of violent crime in the UK. The Authority’s office is in Glasgow’s financial services district, and over 300 staff are employed there. The Authority deals with around 40,000 applications every year paying out up to £200 million pounds to victims of crime. Applications require to be made within 2 years from the date of the injury. Time limits are only extended in exceptional circumstances and in the case applicants who are children. The injury sustained must have been caused by a crime of violence and the crime must be reported to the police before a claim is made.
Compensation awards will be restricted if the applicant has criminal convictions. Applicants also require to fully co-operated with the Police, prosecuting authorities and with the CICA. In 1996, a schedule or tariff of levels of compensation was set down by Parliament. The tariff lists more than 400 different types of injury each injury attracting a set level of compensation. There are 25 levels of compensation arranging from £1000 to £250,000. Most claims are dealt with without the need for a Tribunal Hearing. However, a Tribunal Hearing can be requested in the event of the refusal of an application or to challenge the tariff level applied. Information on the scheme can be found on the government website www.gov.uk

CAN WE HELP YOU WITH YOUR COUNCIL TAX? • You may be able to claim an exemption • You may be able to claim a discount • You may be able to claim a reduction • You may be able to claim a discount and a reduction If you get an exemption from council tax, you normally won’t have to pay anything to your council tax and water and sewerage charges, unless you are on a water meter.
If you get a discount on your council tax, you will have to pay something to both your council tax and water and sewerage charges. (e.g. For a single occupancy discount you may have to pay 75% of the council tax charge and 75% of the water and sewerage charges) If you get a council tax reduction the amount you will have to pay depends on your savings and income. Even if you get a council tax reduction because of low income and savings you will still have to pay for at least 75% of the water and sewerage charges.

Touch is important for everyone; it is an essential part of well-being. From the moment we are born, a gentle touch calms us down and lets us know someone cares.
Some amazing benefits of Human Touch :
A lack of human touch has psychological and emotional consequences. Elderly living alone or in long-term care are amongst the most vulnerable, particularly those living with dementia. Most of the touch received is from CAREgivers carrying out personal care, although gentle in manner this can be associated with tasks and procedures.
• Faster recovery from illness and live longer • Fights stress induced illnesses • Balances nervous system • Relieves pain • Boosts immune system • Increase empathy and understanding • Provides non-verbal communication • Provided a strong display of love and support • Reduces anxiety, depression and agitated behaviour
The touch elders seek is informal, emotional, conveying warmth, concern, security, encouragement and comfort. Regular warm, genuine gentle touch can have a huge impact on the elderly.
Ways to harness the power of touch can be so simple – a hug, holding hands, rubbing lotion on dry hands and arms, a gentle stroke of the hand whilst escorting them can turn someone’s day around.

A free guided trail run heads along a local trail and around a reservoir this month. The run – not a race! – will be led by Wild Stag Trail Adventures on Sunday March 29 and starts from Edenmill Farm Shop car park on Stockiemuir Road, near Blanefield, at 9.30am sharp.
Wild Stag founder Janis Mcarthur said: “This is a sociable run and it’s free to come along. It’s not ideal for complete beginner runners but it’s fine for people who are new to trail running. The route is undulating but has lovely views.”
The route is around six miles (10k) and undulating so you should be able to comfortably manage 5k to 10k. The pace will be “social and chatty” at 10 to 12 minutes per mile.
Runners are advised to come prepared for the weather. Dogs are welcome but must be kept on a lead at all times.
The route is on tracks and trails and follows a section of the coast-to-coast John Muir Way, with a loop around Burncrooks Reservoir.
The event will finish with a cuppa afterwards in the Edenmill Farm Shop café. See Wild Stag Trail Adventures on Facebook to indicate that you will be going along.

SCOTLAND’S FIRST AUTISM SHOW Scotland's first ever expo for people & families affected by Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) has been announced for 3 and 4 April 2020. Set to be held in Glasgow's Crowne Plaza, the event has been organised by parents who run a local charity, the Vale of Leven Autism and Asperger’s Forum (VOLAAF). Scotland's Autism Show will feature exhibitors, expert talks and workshops, for people with autism, their families, friends and professionals. This is a free event and offers the chance to access information, support, guidance, tools and education. VOLAAF is based in the West of Scotland and provides support to families pre- and post-diagnosis, who have children affected by ASD. Everyone involved with the charity is a parent or carer of children with autism. The charity is ran entirely by volunteers.
Suzanne Gillies, chairperson of VOLAAF said: ”Our charity was founded because there is very little practical help or support extended to families. This is where we step in - we provide a safe place for children to come and be themselves, as well as support groups for parents and family members. ”With many children in Scotland having an autism spectrum disorder diagnosis, we were

amazed that there has never been an event where parents, carers and professionals could access support and information under one roof. We decided to take up the challenge and launch our own. We have exhibitors, speakers and workshops booked in so we hope that our show, which is free to attend, will help as many people as possible.” Scotland's Autism Show will run on Friday 3rd and Saturday 4th April, from 9am – 6pm at the Crowne Plaza in Glasgow. RAINBOW FLAG IS RAISED TAKING ACTION TO SAVE LIBRARY
Joint Council leaders raised the flag at the Southbank marina HQ
A rainbow flag was raised in the region last month in support of the LGBT+ community. LGBT History Month is celebrated in the UK each year in February and East Dunbartonshire Council took the opportunity to focus on the eradication of all prejudice towards homophobia, biphobia and transphobia. The Joint Council leaders raised the flag at the Southbank Marina HQ. Joint Council leader Vaughan Moody said, "We're proud to raise the Rainbow flag to show our support for the LGBT+ community here in East Dunbartonshire. "We want to show that we believe in equal rights and equal treatment for everyone in our community and demonstrate our commitment

to eliminating all forms of discrimination and prejudice throughout this area." Joint Council leader Andrew Polson added: “We want to send a message to all of the LGBT+ community that they are valued and no-one should experience prejudice or hate for who they are. "By flying the flag in LGBT History month we are demonstrating our support and it's a reminder that everyone has a role to play in making sure there is no discrimination." The library is under threat as part of council budget savings. The group staged a “love of books” community action and invited locals to add a heart to railings on Maxwell Road to celebrate their favourite book. They have also launched a community film campaign. The short interviews are being posted on Facebook and sent directly to councillors. It’s also hoped that residents will attend the Supporters of Westerton Library AGM on March 16. See “Supporters of Westerton Library” on Facebook.
Here’s what some of our customers had to say about our work: “We had our shower room completely refurbished and are delighted with the finished product. It was very clear from start to finish that Stephen is passionate about his job, the quality of workmanship is first class and we have no hesitation in recommending this company. We would definitely use them again.” Mr and Mrs Q (Helensburgh)

It was important to me to have someone I could trust in my home when I was at work. The guys just got on with things, dealt with the unexpected when it arose and always left my house tidy and clean for me to come home to. What more could you want?” Dr. Jennifer Brown (Craigton)

NEW LOOK FOR COUNCIL WEBSITE
Local residents have been instrumental in the creation of a new-look website for East Dunbartonshire Council. A survey, both on-line and via the users of the Community Hubs, gave people the chance to voice their opinions about the old site.
“We listened to the views of our online visitors and they have been taken on board in the new look design.
These helped in the process of designing the new website with key changes, such as layout, site navigation and the grouping of information.
“We have also introduced new functions which are intended to make the site easier to use.”
An accessibility audit is now being carried out on the updated design to inform the next stage of improvements. Council leader Andrew Polson said: “Website technology and functionality is rapidly changing and a refresh of the council website was due.
Council Leader Vaughan Moody added: “The updated design not only looks great but should make it easier for visitors to find what they are looking for quickly. “We are committed to digital transformation and the website is a key tool for our residents to be able to engage with the council at their convenience.” See: www.eastdunbarton.gov.uk
