COVID-19 HEALTH ADVICE

COVID-19 CRISIS With the UK in high alert because of the Covid-19 pandemic, it’s vital that we all remain vigilant to the latest health advice. The advice by NHS Scotland and the UK government as we went to press was to stay at home if you have coronavirus symptoms, including a high temperature and a new continuous cough. You should not go to a GP surgery, pharmacy or hospital and you do not need to contact 111 to tell them you're staying at home. If you have symptoms, you should stay at home for seven days. If you live with other people, they should stay at home for 14 days from the day the first person got symptoms.

If you live with someone who is 70 or over, has a long-term condition, is pregnant or has a weakened immune system, you should try to find somewhere else for them to stay for 14 days. You should only seek advice via NHS 111 online if you feel you cannot cope with your symptoms at home, your condition gets worse or your symptoms do not get better after seven days. To avoid catching and spreading the coronavirus, the public should aim to avoid socialising as much as possible, especially in

indoor places. This is particularly important for people who are aged 70 or over, have a long-term health condition, or are pregnant. The key actions to take include washing your hands with soap and water often; covering your mouth and nose with a tissue or your sleeve (not your hands) when you cough or sneeze; putting used tissues in the bin immediately and washing your hands afterwards; avoiding close contact with people who have symptoms of coronavirus; only travelling on public transport if you need to; and working from home if you can. See www.hps.scot.nhs.uk for the latest advice.

With the Covid-19 situation unfolding as we researched, wrote and published your latest Community Magazine, we have done our best to make sure that articles are as up to date and as informative as possible. However, many events and group meetings will be postponed or cancelled in line with the ever-changing UK and Scottish government directives. We would like to apologise if any information published is misleading or incorrect. If in doubt about events or meetings, please contact the organiser or check their website for further details.

KEEPING UP JOIN WITH HELPING HANDS TO DATE LOCAL INFORMATION In light of the recent Coronavirus situation, most local councils have set up dedicated support pages on their main websites, with the aim of bringing communities the most up to date and relevant information, and to provide support for responses in a safe manner. These are updated continuously, reflecting current events and the ever changing local and national government advice. Please visit your local councils support page if you are needing any support, as these all provide direction to any services that are remaining open to provide their resources if in need. Your local website can be found at www. eastrenfrewshire.gov.uk/ article/10655/Coronavirusinformation

A charity that aims to improve health and wellbeing and reduce loneliness and isolation in the community is looking for volunteers. Mearns Kirk Helping Hands relies on volunteer support to run a variety of groups and sessions based at Mearns Kirk Church Halls in Newton Mearns. Opportunities include roles such as drivers, home bakers, kitchen help, group leaders, administration, IT and website support, promotion and marketing. The groups that are held regularly include a Friendship Club, a Lunch Club for People Living with Dementia and a Men’s Breakfast Club, as well as a bereavement group and a cancer support group.

Vicky Attwood, project manager at Mearns Kirk Helping Hands, said: “With only two staff members, the charity relies on volunteers to run all the clubs and activities. “There is a wide variety of roles for volunteers and we offer induction training and rolespecific training. “Our volunteers tell us that there are many benefits to helping with the charity’s work. They report a sense of purpose, the enjoyment of being part of something worthwhile and the rewards for giving back to their community.

Volunteers also meet new people and learn new skills.” Mearns Kirk Helping Hands was established in 2016 and is funded through the Robertson Trust and Impact Funding partners. In the past, the charity has benefitted from funds support from the Asda Community Foundation and Whitelee Windfarm at Eaglesham. They welcome donations. Vicky added: “The charity aims to support as many people as possible in the community. We hope that people will come forward to volunteer.” See https://mkhelpinghands.org. uk and “Mearns Kirk Helping Hands” on Facebook.

HELPING YOUR NEIGHBOUR

ADVERTISE

Thousands of volunteers across the UK have set up groups to assist those who are most vulnerable during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Self-quarantine can be a difficult experience for those who struggle with their mobility, health problems and those living on their own. The help groups offer their time to run errands for those in need, such as to buy groceries and pick up prescriptions, and also to chat on the phone if people are anxious or lonely. A UK-wide #viralkindness campaign has also been launched by a woman in Cornwall. Becky Wass came up with the idea to create shareable cards that allow people to offer help to their neighbours. The postcards read: “Hello! If you are self-isolating, I can help.” The cards have spaces for a name, address, phone number and possible tasks that the recipient might need help with. In Scotland, a support service has been set up and with a website,

www.viralkindness.scot. Many help groups have been launched on Facebook and also via Whatsapp messages. Locally, in East Renfrewshire, a Facebook group has been assisting those affected by the coronavirus. The East Renfrewshire SelfIsolation Supporters is a community group of volunteers based in Newton Mearns. To get help, you simply use the messaging service on their

Facebook group, or ask someone to do this for you. St Bridget's Roman Catholic Church, Eaglesham, also has a team of volunteers who will be happy to deliver shopping or medications to those in isolation. See their Facebook page for further information. If you have the time to help, why not set up you own support network and contact your neighbours to see if they need support?

£1M SUPPORT FROM WAITROSE

Dan said: “The summer week was really fun and we learned about lighting cues and setting everything up behind the scenes. I’m really interested in the technical side of theatre.

Waitrose has created a £1 million Community Support Fund to be used as direct aid for local communities. Help includes additional local delivery services to support people isolated in their homes, delivering essential items to local care homes and community groups and donating products to create care packages for customers to share with vulnerable neighbours. Since March 20, Waitrose shops will dedicate the first hour of opening as a priority shopping time for the elderly, the vulnerable and those who look after them. NEW LOCAL AUTISM BRANCH

GET SOME FRESH AIR As we went to press the advice from experts was to try to get outdoors for regular exercise where possible. If you have been infected by Covid-19 or you are self-isolating because someone close to you is infected you should be very cautious about spending time outdoors with other people. For those still well, accessing quiet trails or hills and mountains that you are familiar with is a good idea. It is important not to go anywhere or do anything new or excessive that might lead to an accident because this will add strain to an already overstretched medical service. Commonsense is paramount but fresh air is good for you.

The new committee welcomed Kirsten Oswald MSP (centre) to their official launch at Williamwood Parish Church

The new National Austistic Society East Renfrewshire Branch had a great turnout at their official launch last month

A new organisation has been created in East Renfrewshire to offer support to adults and children with autism. The National Autistic Society East Renfrewshire Branch was officially launched at Williamwood Parish Church in Clarkston last month.

A virtual reality headset was available to demonstrate what it is like for someone with autism to visit a supermarket.

The local branch aims to improve awareness of autism across the region and ensure there are good local services, as well as advice, for people living with autism.

In Scotland, there are thought to be more than 50,000 people with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), according to Scottish Government findings.

At the launch, which was attended by Kirsten Oswald MSP, questionnaires were filled in about what the group could do for those with autism in East Renfrewshire.

In East Renfrewshire, there is a dedicated Autism Diagnostic Team, which is responsible for diagnosing young people and adults. It uses the World Health Organisation (WHO) definition

of ASD in its decision making process: “ASD refers to a range of conditions characterised by some degree of impaired social behaviour, communication and language, and a narrow range of interests and activities that are both unique to the individual and carried out repetitively.” One mum-of-two, who attended the launch event, said: “As a parent it’s great to have somewhere to go for advice, help and support.” World Autism Awareness Day is an internationally recognised day on April 2 each year. The new branch is keen to hear from those who have autism, or their parents. See www.facebook.com/ naseastrenfrewshirebranch.

READING RESOURCES ONLINE

Readers in East Renfrewshire can gain free access to thousands of magazines and newspapers, thanks to the launch of a new digital service. East Renfrewshire Culture and Leisure had introduced Pressreader for library users, giving access to over 7000 worldwide magazines and newspapers from the comfort of their own home. Library Development Officer Gillian Hamilton said: “Many people will be staying indoors and looking for extra reading resources and Pressreader is very intuitive. We hope this will help those feeling isolated or staying home just now.” More details can be found on the library website: www.ercultureandleisure.org/ emagazines.

NEW MACMILLAN EXERCISE CLASS

A physical activity programme for people living with cancer has introduced a new class in the local area. Macmillan Move More is for people with cancer, as well as their family or carers, and offers a programme of gentle exercise classes and walks across East Renfrewshire. People with cancer are advised to avoid being inactive. Research shows that physical activity can help to manage some of the side effects of cancer treatment, for example, reducing fatigue, stress and anxiety and improving low mood, depression, bone health, cardiovascular health and muscle strength. Exercising, even gentle exercise, also helps with weight management and lowers our chances of developing other

health problems, such as high blood pressure, heart disease, kidney disease, diabetes, stroke or even a new cancer. The new Move More Gentle Movement class takes place at Giffnock Library on Mondays from 2pm to 3pm. Other classes locally include Macmillan Friendly Walks on Mondays at 10am in Newton Mearns and Gentle Movement on Tuesdays at 10m in Clarkston Halls. Before attending a session, participants should contact the Move More coordinator Helen Harrison on 07867 441489. Also see: www.ercultureandleisure. org/article/10227/Move-More.

SUPPORT FOR CANCER PATIENTS

A charity is keen to highlight a range of free services on offer to patients living with cancer. TRACTion Cancer Support provides a range of resources and therapies for people with head, neck and gastric cancers, including those that affect the pharynx, larynx, thyroid and oesophagus. The Thornliebank-based charity can provide cookbooks, recipes, massage therapies, a makeup service and art therapy. They also encourage people to attend Macmillan Move More “Gentle Movement” exercise sessions in Giffnock Library. TIPS FOR SUCCESSFUL HOME WORKING For some people, the distractions of TV, social media and even doing household chores will affect their productive day. Try to be strict with yourself and stick to your work tasks as you would in the office. Leave the rest of the entertainment and tasks for after work.

With many thousands of people now working from home amid the coronavirus outbreak, we share some tips for success. The aim is to try to avoid the stresses, both mentally and physically, of sharing your new work space with other people, whether your partner, other adults or children. If you live alone, finding the peace and space to work in your home environment will not be so difficult but there will be other potential issues, such as loneliness, anxiety and too many distractions.Try to stay in touch with colleagues virtually.

in a bid to consume news and information.

It is important to find a space – a room where you can shut the door if possible – to work. If you need to work at a computer, you should try to set it up as you would at work. Think how you are sitting as you use your computer. There are plenty of help guides online. Take regular breaks from your screen and don’t be tempted to spend these breaks staring at your computer for longer

Draw up a working timetable. This is especially important if you have children at home. Can you take it in turns with your partner to work and look after the kids? If you have older children, show them your new work timetable and tell them why it needs to be respected. Try to stick to your usual routine and encourage your kids to do the same. See our article about useful resources for activities for children on page18.

Make it clear to other people in the house that when you are in your home office or office space, you are working. They should respect your need for quiet and to concentrate. Wearing headphones and playing calming background music might help. If people need to ask you something, you can request they do so by text, Whatsapp or another on-line message service. This way you can keep work and home life as separate as possible. While working from home might be difficult for many people, you can rejoice in small silver linings, such as leaving the office clothes in the wardrobe and not bothering to brush your hair.

FITNESS FIRST FOR EXPECTANT MUMS

What's Up Doc? with Dr Nick Dunn

This month: COMMUNITY SPIRIT…

East Renfrewshire Culture and Leisure have introduced aquanatal classes for pregnant woman

A programme of new fitness classes has been launched for expectant mums. East Renfrewshire Culture and Leisure has introduced aquanatal sessions for pregnant women. There are also Exercise for Two classes at Barrhead Foundry, where participants can bring their babies along to a fitness class. One of the aquanatal instructors is Clare Wilson, of Newton Mearns. With coronavirus spreading rapidly, and numbers of people affected by the virus expected to rise sharply, all NHS workers are working extra hard to make sure that those requiring attention can get help when needed. Examples include receptionists, delivery drivers, hospital porters and managers, as well as nurses, doctors and other clinicians. Times like this allow us to recognise the important contribution all the team members can make, especially when working to the top of their abilities.

this in living memory, we are having to be creative about our approach, and behind the scenes a lot of work is going on in GP Practices and hospitals to keep up with a rapidly changing situation. This can all be very unsettling for patients, with many consultations taking place over the phone or by video, and receptionists being trained to ask more questions, and give advice, than previously. However please be aware that patient care remains our biggest priority, and that we rely on the community to be considerate to one another at these difficult times.

BETTER ACCESS TO JUSTICE FOR VICTIMS OF ACCIDENTS

Incoming Scottish legislation will greatly improve access to justice in 2020 for victims of accidents seeking compensation for their injuries and losses. At present when injured claimants raise a court action against the party believed to be responsible, they face being liable for the legal expenses of the defending party if they ultimately lose their case. This liability for legal expenses can be very considerable, and whilst sometimes this risk can be covered by insurance, insurance policies are not always available, carry various exclusion clauses, and can be expensive.

successful Defender will not normally be able to recover any legal expenses from the claimant even if the claimant loses the case at trial. Instead, the claimant will only be liable to a successful Defender:-

Under the incoming legislation (exact date of commencement awaited) personal injury claimants will benefit from Qualified One-way Costs Shifting (“QOCS”). Under QOCS, a

(a) Where fraudulent conduct by the claimant, (b) Where claimant has behaved in a manifestly unreasonable manner, or

These tests are expected to be difficult for Defenders to establish.

To find out more please contact

The imminent introduction of QOCS is expected substantially to improve access to justice for claimants. Currently, many deserving claims are rejected by wealthy employers and/ or insurers, and are then abandoned by claimants fearful of the risks of proceeding with litigation. With the new legislation, QOCS and the reduced risks for claimants, however, solicitors will have greater scope to advise claimants to press on into litigation to secure justice and compensation due for their injuries and losses. Anyone injured in an accident (whether at work, in a road accident or in a public/private place) is advised to instruct specialist personal injury claim solicitors as soon as possible. Dallas McMillan’s Personal Injury team is headed by Gordon Bell and David McElroy, two Law Society Of Scotland Accredited Specialists in Personal Injury. THE CAMPING SEASON IS OPEN damage done by the minority, who treat the area’s prime recreation asset with contempt and spoil it for everyone else. The old easygoing approach to camping is no longer sustainable, perhaps at least partly due to the increasing numbers arriving in the summer months.

Wild camping is a thing of the past, but while the major changes brought in at the National Park are fairly recent not everyone has got the message. Camping season is upon us and this summer you may be considering a camping break, as in the less heavily used spots there really is a chance to get away from it all at a time when more urban forms of entertainment and relaxation are increasingly restricted. But most of us have seen the carnage the more thoughtless campers used to create in the past, some of it unmentionable,

and for that reason a rigorous control regime was introduced which sets limits on where and how you can pitch your tent. There’s a whole argument about freedom of movement, with many perfectly responsible people furious that what used to be a largely restriction-free pursuit is now closely monitored and managed. As against that the Park authorities can point to the

While organised campsites are not everyone’s cup of tea they do come with the advantage of clearly set-out rules, and are part of a wider plan to weed out the troublemakers and litter louts. The arguments will continue, but the regime is in force, and the camping booking season for the reason running to September is now open. Campers are asked to consider planning their trip to the National Park by booking their permit area of campsite pitch at Loch Chon, Loch Achray or Inchcalloch in advance. EMERGENCY TRAIN TIMETABLES LET’S HEAR

YOUR STORIES

We hope you are enjoying your Newton Mearns, Clarkston and Busby Community Magazine.

Train service providers have issued a revised timetable to allow for the provision of transport for people delivering essential services. Amid the Covid-19 crisis, staff availability in ScotRail and Network Rail Scotland has been affected, as well as customer demand, which means that changes to the timetable were deemed necessary. It was explained that the timetable that will operate for customers represents significant change from the normal daily timetable, with a specific focus

to deliver an effective public transport service for key workers. Reducing the number of trains in service creates opportunities for additional cleaning activities on trains, and in depots, and allows more targeted cleaning at stations. With more railway staff being affected by the impact of the coronavirus, revising services also accommodates

infrastructure changes and allows safety critical roles to be performed across the country. It is believed that the service level will deliver more than enough seats to meet the current demand levels and the timetable will be kept under regular review to react to any further developments. David Simpson, ScotRail Operations Director, said: “We are facing an unprecedented challenge on Scotland’s Railway and the revised timetable will help to provide a critical service for the key workers across the country.”

PUPILS ENJOY #WBD2020 Meanwhile, at Eaglesham Primary school, pupils wore their pyjamas to school and took in their favourite book and a prop. The school bell also rang every hour to remind pupils to read for a few minutes throughout the day. One class, P3.2, also created book buddies. They made a front cover for their book, which the book buddy could hold. At Giffnock Primary an array of different book themes and characters were spotted in the school on World Book Day.

Above: Eaglesham Primary pupils made book buddies. Inset: Draw-a-long session at Giffnock Primary

Thousands of primary school pupils in East Renfrewshire enjoyed a wide array of activities and fun on World Book Day 2020. The event, organised annually by the National Literacy Trust, celebrates authors, illustrators, books and reading. This year’s World Book Day took place on March 5. At Isobel Mair School in Newton Mearns, pupils in Class Orkney used their creative skills to produce a movie based on a children’s book, Alice in Wonderland.

At Kirkhill PS, also in Newton Mearns, Primary 7 had a visit from local author, SF Mazhar, who has penned books including the Power of Four series and Elementals. Children and teachers dressed up in book-themed outfits for World Book Day at Carolside PS in Clarkston.

Children also wrote their own stories and some in P4 enjoyed reading about Time Machine Adventures in the dark with their torches. Others read books in dens they had created. A class of pupils took part in a draw-a-long session with Tom Fletcher, one of the UK’s best-selling authors for children. See www.worldbookday.com to find out more about how you can encourage children to read more.

BRINGING BOOKS TO LIFE Author Breea Keenan and illustrator David Nichol helped to bring World Book Day to life at Busby Nursery and Primary. The duo presented children's book Nessie's Selfie to the nursery children and Primary One. They talked about Scottish book characters, concept art and creative writing. Jackie Toman, of Busby Nursery, said: "The children were so engaged by the story of Dawn, who struggles to make friends and her amazing meeting with Nessie. “The fabulous, colourful illustrations and the rhythm and flow of the rhyming content in this book about friendship made the storytelling session inclusive, relevant and fun.”

AN

EGG-STRAVAGANZA OF FACTS

Easter is considered the most important and oldest festival of the Christian Church, celebrating the resurrection of Christ and held between March 21 and April 25. Over the centuries, many Easter traditions have developed, including eating chocolate eggs, dyeing and decorating eggs, egg hunts, hot cross buns and the Easter bunny.

1. Historians think that Easter was named after a festival celebrating Eostre and the coming of spring. Her sacred symbols are thought to have been the hare and the egg.

Here are 13 interesting facts and fun statistics related to Easter.

2. The American tradition of the Easter bunny delivering decorated eggs to well-

behaved children is actually thought to have originated in Germany during the Middle Ages. Dutch settlers in Pennsylvania brought the bunny to the United States in the 1700s. 3. The Guinness World record for the tallest chocolate Easter egg is held by Italy. The egg measured 10.39 m and was recorded at Le Acciaierie Shopping

Centre, in Cortenuova, on April 16, 2011.

The egg weighed 7,200kg and had a circumference of 19.6m at its widest point.

4. The largest decorated Easter egg was 15.02m tall and 8.72m in diameter, and was created in Pomerode, Santa Catarina, Brazil, on March 9, 2019. This giant egg was created

10K SERIES ‘LATER THIS YEAR’ Local runners will be disappointed by news that a series of three popular 10k events has been postponed. However, organisers of this year’s Babcock 10k Series are keen to reschedule the road races that take place in and around Glasgow. The races had been due to take place next month including, the Babcock Helensburgh 10k on Thursday May 7 and the Babcock Dumbarton 10k on May 14, both at at 7.30pm, as well as the Babcock Shettleston 10k in Glasgow on Sunday May 31 at 10am. Organisers hope that the series, which has been affected by the impact of the coronavirus pandemic, will now take place in September. A spokesperson for the 10k series said: “The decision to postpone the three races was taken based upon advice from the Scottish Government and, in turn. from Scottish Athletics.

“It also takes into account the fact that local authorities have cancelled all bookings for their facilities for the foreseeable future, as well as the need to protect the resources of medical service providers and the emergency services for greater priorities.” All entries for the 10k races can be carried forward to the new dates and anyone unable to take part as a result of the

change in dates can request a refund or a rollover to next year’s series. A 10k remains a great goal for people of all fitness levels. Hopefully, people will still be able to get outdoors for training runs or maybe you have access to a treadmill indoors. Your Community Magazine has published training

Hope for the best... but we must prepare for the worst.

N

obody likes to think about their own mortality, and that's why so many people go without basic estate planning documents like Wills and Powers of Attorney! Unfortunately, it can take an event like a funeral, or relative going into care as a wake-up call to make us act to protect ourselves and our families. With the world in the grip of the coronavirus many of our Clients tell us that they have now been forced to consider securing their finances and welfare. Although, the most important thing for us all to do right now is take proper care of ourselves and our nearest and dearest, we must consider being proactive in arranging important documents. Most people are only too aware of the consequences of not having a Will in place. Making sure that your assets will pass to the loved ones you want to receive them after your death is critical during crisis times. You don't want to make things any more difficult than they need to be, and avoiding costly and time-consuming processes like probate takes on heightened importance when your family might end up confined to their homes in a quarantine situation.

Tony Marchi, principal at ILAWSScotland says: “A Will is something almost everyone knows they need however, some people are still unaware of the importance of granting Power of Attorney and, among those who are aware, there is a common misconception that they don’t need to appoint an attorney as they still have full capacity.” However, you can only grant a Power of Attorney if you have capacity. If you have an accident or an ongoing medical problem, which leaves you incapable of looking after your own affairs, it’s too late. Several regions in Scotland, through the NHS, have now formally announced that if you are unable to make your own medical decisions, then your spouse of family will not be allowed to make them for you without a Power of Attorney in place. A recent campaign in partnership between a number of Health and Social Care Partnerships in Scotland, including the three in Tayside have taken to television advertising to try to get the message across. Sally Wilson, who is working on the project with colleagues in Tayside said, “Many people are unaware that

without Power of Attorney you cannot act for your husband, wife, mother, father or anyone else should they lose capacity.” Tony adds: “Incapacity in many peoples eyes involves something very serious along the lines of Dementia, Alzheimer’s or comas, however, something as simple as you being too medicated or you having

too high a temperature is enough for you to be declared incapax (incapacitated).” Power of Attorney also allows, with your permission, someone else to be able to handle your financial affairs if you are too ill or unable to get out and about. This includes paying bills, dealing with the bank, insurances and pensions.

Right now the message couldn’t be clearer. We all hope for the best, but it’s just prudent to ensure that we and our families are properly protected. Important Facts

Since the outbreak of Coronavirus, many of our Clients have asked for clarity about our procedures whilst we carry out your essential work. For clarity, they are as follows: 1. Home and office visits remain in place for any Client within our usual business areas.

TV HOLLY WILL SING AGAIN

Senior Savvy with Tasnim Rehman

This month: TIPS FOR PROTECTING YOUR HANDS Your hands and the skin that protects them take a beating every day. Some tips on keeping your hands strong, supple and healthy.

1: USE BUT AVOID OVERUSE OF ANTIBACTERIAL SOAP Holly Scally, left, singing with fellow contestant Trinity-Lee on The Voice

Teenage singer Holly Scally has vowed: “It’s not the end, it’s just the beginning,” after her last appearance on talent show, The Voice. Holly made it through to The Battles round of the ITV show, which was broadcast in March after “blind auditions” sent the teenager from Newton Mearns through. She was sent home by coach Meghan Trainor after a duet with fellow contestant Trinity-Lee. The pair sung Keep Holding On by Avril Lavigne before Meghan, fellow coaches Will.i.am, Olly Murs and Sir Tom Jones, and a live audience. However, Holly – who was visibly upset on the show – is not giving up on her dream. In fact, she has already been approached by an

agent and she has been asked to sing at a number of weddings. She says she may apply for next year’s show. Holly, who attends St Ninian’s High School, said: “I’m so happy for Trinity but I am still disappointed. But this is not the end, it’s just the beginning.” Mum Gillian, who was in the audience, said: “She did brilliantly but she wasn’t chosen at the Battle. She was mainly disappointed that people were rooting for her and she wasn’t put through. She is fine about it and is definitely going to continue singing.”

Antibacterial soaps and frequent hand washing are necessary to prevent the spread of germs and airborne illnesses, however, a bar of mild soap is just as effective as antibacterial soaps for removing germs and can keep your skin from becoming irritated. Take your time while washing – no less than 20 seconds.

2: PAT THEM DRY After washing your hands with warm water and a mild soap, be sure to pat them dry with an absorbent towel. Pat gently to remove with any excess water that would allow germs or bacteria to hang out on your hands, as this is irritating to the skin, especially with frequent washing.

3: USE HAND SANITISER ONLY WHEN NEEDED Hand sanitizers are useful when no access to a sink or warm water. However, many sanitizers are alcohol-based and can be irritating to your skin. Alcohol strips away natural oils, leaving them unprotected and susceptible to dryness and cracking.

4: AVOID EXTREME HEAT Exchange hot water to warm instead so as not to dehydrate.

CAST CALL OUT FOR TV SHOW

Legal Matters with Gill Bowman BA LLB

This month: SCOTTISH LEGAL AID

A popular TV show has announced it is casting in Glasgow for a forthcoming series. Couples Come Dine With Me, which is broadcast on Channel 4, is keen to receive applications for the 2020 series. The show, which was first broadcast in 2014, sees three couples competing for a chance to win a prize of £1000. Couples Come Dine With Me is set to return this year, although no filming will take place while the Covid-19 crisis is on-going. All casting will take place remotely. To apply, see itvuk.etribez. com/ag/itvmultistory/ cdwmcouples6/welcome.html and complete the form.

A spokesperson from the company that creates the show said: “We are really keen to hear from couples who would like to play a part in the next Couples Come Dine with Me series. “We hope to get the cast ready to go so when everything is calmer in relation to the virus pandemic so we can then start filming as soon as possible.” Couples Come Dine With Me features couples working together to plan a perfect dinner. From deciding the menu and entertainment to table arrangement, they compete with other teams to win the highest scores and the prize.

During this unprecedented time of Covid-19 I thought it would be of assistance to remind people about the availability of financial assistance for legal issues from the Scottish Legal Aid Board (SLAB) and the application process. Public funding is available through SLAB for individuals to receive legal advice and assistance, or representation, for civil and criminal matters concerning Scots law. Legal Aid is available to individuals over the age of sixteen and also those under sixteen years of age who are able to provide legal instructions to a solicitor. There are, of course, restrictions to financial eligibility, depending on any savings you may have

and also your weekly disposable income. According to SLAB, 75% of Scottish adults would qualify for civil legal aid. It may be that this would be with a contribution. However, that contribution is usually paid by way of monthly instalments and ensures that access to legal advice is affordable to those who require it. At this time, face to face appointments with a solicitor may not be possible and as a result SLAB have allowed for Legal aid applications to be lodged without the requirement of signature by the applicant. We suggest you contact your own solicitor for further guidance if you do require legal assistance and are unable to personally attend for an appointment.

An initiative to tackle loneliness in the community is rolling out a new programme of “Happy to Chat” groups. Tomorrow’s Older People East Renfrewshire has launched two Happy to Chat meet-ups recently. The first is earmarked for Mondays from 10.30am to 11.30am at Orchard Park Hotel in Giffnock. The newest group is Happy to Chat Wednesdays from 10.30am to 11.30am at The Overlee in Clarkston.

While groups are likely to be on hold during the Covid-19 crisis, they will be restarted as soon as they can. Over previous months, Tomorrow’s Older People has developed a network of Happy to Chat meeting points in cafes and pubs across the region. These places are for anyone to meet

Here are some useful tips for home-based fitness. Climb the stairs: Stair climbing works your heart, lungs and leg muscles.

Maria added: “The Happy to Chat Mondays and Wednesdays group will take this movement a step further by asking local businesses to host informal, weekly get-togethers.

Push walls: Pushing against something that won't move while you also don't move creates an isometric contraction of the muscle, which helps to maintain muscle mass.

“They are open to people of any age who feel they want to meet new people, make new connections or just enjoy a chat over a cuppa.”

Lift weights: Use a rucksack filled with books to do squats and lunges or utilise food products such as tins of beans for arms based exercises.

Tomorrow’s Older People initiative is supported through Voluntary Action East Renfrewshire.

E-classes: There are a host of on-line fitness workouts and yoga sessions to be found on-line.

CAREER MONTH WAS A SUCCESS

ARE YOU THE BEST? Local shops are being invited to enter an annual competition that recognises independent retailers on UK high streets. Britain’s Best Small Shops Awards is inviting nominations. Once entries are collated, members of the public will be able to cast their votes before industry experts create a shortlist. Thirty of the most impressive applications will be invited to attend the awards ceremony at the House of Commons in November. The only Scottish store to be shortlisted in 2019 was The Orry Mill, a contemporary yarn shop in Eaglesham. To enter, visit www.indieretail. uk/best-small-shops.

Pupils at an East Renfrewshire school were inspired by professionals during its annual Career Month. Eaglesham Primary and nursery invited a number of people working in different industries to the school for the annual monthlong event that is designed to introduce pupils to various career options. A police officer, firefighter, engineer, doctor, sales development manager and journalist were among a number of special guests who spoke to hundreds of pupils during Career Month. The participants revealed the qualities needed to do their role, as well as sharing some of the most exciting parts of their work. They were then quizzed by the

youngsters on their jobs and how they got there. The aim was to educate and inspire pupils about the range of options available to them. Stephanie Fry, acting principal teacher at Eaglesham Primary, said: “The idea of Career Month is for children to not only hear about different jobs but the different pathways people took after leaving school.” Pupils also completed a test to find out which careers suited their personalities. Career Month was part of the Developing the Young Workforce programme, which better prepares children and young people for the world of work.

SUPPORT FOR OUTDOOR SPACE

A community group in Clarkston has launched a Crowdfunding campaign in a bid to make their outdoor space more accessible. Off Grid Community runs an outdoor playgroup for toddlers, after-school care for children and groups for children with additional support needs. They are hoping to raise funds to make their woodland area more wheelchair and reducedmobility friendly. A spokesperson said: "We already have a small wheelchair-friendly area, but we have bigger plans. "If we meet our target we want to create growing and sensory spaces." CLUB TO MARK 100TH YEAR

Mearns Bowling Club are celebrating their centenary this year

An historic bowling club in Newton Mearns will be celebrating a landmark anniversary this year with a special ceremony. Members of Mearns Bowling Club, located at the Old Cross on Ayr Road, had hoped to mark their centenary this month but because of the Covid-19 situation they plan to arrange a date when it is safe to do so. The event will include several dignatories plus a speech by the Honorary Centenary President John Cossar and the raising of the club’s centenary flag.

Currently, the club is closed but on reopening they will be offering a free first year of membership to encourage new members of all ages to join up. John, 89, has been associated with the club since 1956. His father, Bert, became president in 1960 and John followed in his steps in 1980. John said: “Our club was established in 1920 and has

given 100 years of service to the community. It has been a great source of enjoyment, sporting challenges and friendship for its members and their friends and family. “Bowls offers a healthy activity for all ages and our club has a wonderful camaraderie. Once the new season starts and when it is safe for it to happen, we would very much like to see new people, including children, men and women, coming along to find out more about the sport.”

The bowling club has planned a programme of events in its 100th year, as well as all the usual practice events, internal competitions and competitions against other clubs. It is normally open daily for members throughout the summer. The club and bar are also available for private events, such as weddings and birthday parties. DANDY’S NEW DISPENSERS The deli is encouraging local residents to support their sustainable project and has also asked customers to tell them if there are any other items they would like to see stocked in the dispensers.

TAKE CARE OF MENTAL HEALTH The Covid-19 outbreak will affect people in different ways but many will feel anxious or stressed about the situation. In addition, extended periods at home in isolation will add to many people’s mental health issues. There is a range of advice to help you to stay mindfully strong. Take breaks from watching, reading or listening to news stories, including social media. Hearing about the pandemic repeatedly can be upsetting. Make time to unwind by doing yoga, meditating, reading a book or listening to calming music. Stay connected with others. Talk with people you trust on-line or on the phone about your concerns and how you are feeling.

Phillipa added: “The demand is not just for foods but also refillable washing-up liquid, laundry detergent, shampoo and other toiletries, and we have branched out into this area too.

Phillipa, owner of Dandy's Delicatessen, hopes that their new dispensers will encourage more sustainable shopping

A Clarkston store has introduced bulk food dispensers in a bid to encourage more people to shop more sustainably. Customers at Dandy’s Delicatessen on Busby Road can bring their own containers, bottles or jars – or use the shop’s paper bags or reusable cotton drawstring bags – to stock up on a range of everyday products, from porridge and rice to pasta and couscous. There are also toiletries available, including laundry liquid and handwash. Owner Phillipa MacColl said the milk vending machine, which was introduced earlier this year, is also proving popular with locals.

She explained: “We hope to enable people to cut down on packaging and also cut down on food waste. So far we have been really pleased with the uptake. “The feedback has also been extremely positive, as people are really keen to change their shopping habits towards going waste free. It also tends to work out cheaper if people shop this way because we are able to offer very competitive pricing.”

“The Friendly soap range has been extremely popular since we introduced that. This includes shampoo and conditioner bars, soap, cleansing and shaving bars, which are all free from cruelty, parabens, sulphates, plastic and palm oil.” The bulk food dispensers were funded by the waste prevention implementation fund from Zero Waste Scotland. To stay updated on new stock and initiatives, follow Dandy’s Delicatessen on Facebook at: www.facebook.com/dandysdeli.
