Choosing a nursery Cradling your newborn, it’s hard to believe that your bundle of soft flesh will ever even vaguely resemble the hulking great school kids up the road. Sooner rather than later, however, you too will become an active participant in the Great British obsession of education, education, education.
Staff ratios State nursery schools and classes have a minimum ratio of two adults to 2026 children. One must be a qualified teacher, the other a qualified nursery assistant. Private day nurseries ususally have a higher ratio of staff, whose qualifications depend on the ages of the children. For under-fives, nursery schooling takes over from general childcare from the age of around two and a half in the private sector, and three and a half in state pre-school units. So, scarcely is the babe out of nappies before the agonising begins - where to send our precious little mites to start their way in the big, wide world? You’re under no legal obligation to send your child to nursery - keep them at home if that’s what suits you. But if it doesn’t and you’ve ruled out an all-day childminder, then your choices are between: Playgroups - or preschool groups run in the local community, for a few hours a day (you may be expected to help out once a week)
Private nursery schools State nursery school or nursery unit of a primary school
Community Buzz 01.indd 4
The childcare you choose will obviously depend both on your child and whether you work so need your child to be looked after for a certain number of hours a day. Playgroups usually offer shorter hours and parents are more heavily involved than in nurseries.
Finding a nursery With the exception of workplace nurseries, your starting point to search online for nurseries (or other forms of childcare) with vacancies should be ChildcareLink or Directgov. Your GP or health visitor may also know of nurseries in your area, plus there will be information in your local phone directory and library. Failing all that, you can, of course, ask on Mumsnet Talk and check the listings on your Mumsnet Local site.
Different educational philosophies A range of educational labels is attached even at the preschool stage, particularly in the private sector. Montessori schools aim to develop the child’s whole personality and attach particular importance to the child’s appreciation of their surroundings. Steiner schools’ stated aim is to foster imagination and creativity; they don’t introduce formal education before the age of six, concentrating on creative play rather than the ‘three Rs’ from around four years old.
What to look for when choosing a nursery Many parents send their children to a playgroup or nursery because they think it’s good preparation for school. “My son went to a lovely caring playgroup at two and a half. No ‘school’ atmosphere - lots of cuddles, very cherishing. Then at three and a half he did a year at the nursery attached to his school. That was great too, as he got to meet all his cohort for reception and he was ‘ready’ by then for the schooltype feel of the nursery.” morocco At the age of two or three, your child may still seem small but they’ll be on the Early Years Foundation Stage ladder and the government has plans for them to learn all sorts of things. There are lots of different types of nurseries – big ones, small ones, ones owned by national corporations, small independent nurseries, council-run nurseries, and nurseries that may be affiliated to local schools. Each will offer something different, and what meets your needs will depend on your family and your requirements. It’s worth booking appointments to view a selection of nurseries so that you can meet the staff and see how the nurseries are run. Most Mumsnetters agree that it’s caring and confident staff who make all the difference. “Bottom line really is the feel of the place. The nursery my son is in had

Memories ...Newburn Newburn was originally considered to have preeminence over Newcastle, as Newburn was the first point up from the mouth of the river that was fordable.
Community Buzz 01.indd 8
20/05/2014 11:13
9 The Romans marked this ford with a framework of stones, and built a fort to command the crossing. The village has other Roman connections, with the route of Hadrian’s Wall cutting across its northern half, before running toward Throckley. From the eighth century, Newburn was a royal vill or town, and Newcastle didn’t become a more important settlement until Plantagenet times. Between 1332 and 1974 the Percy family were associated with Newburn, and Hugh Percy was the last to inherit Newburn Manor House, which was built in the 16th century. Also in the village at this time was Newburn Hall, which was built in the 15th century.
A monument commemorating the Battle of Newburn is at Newburn Country Park. On 28 August 1640, the Battle of Newburn took place. The Scottish Covenanters, led by Alexander Leslie, 1st Earl of Leven planted guns at Newburn to protect them while fording the river, after which they defeated the English on south side of the river at Stellahaugh, and subsequently occupied Newcastle upon Tyne. The Scottish claim this occupation to have been the prologue to the English Civil War. The name of
Scotswood, one of the manufacturing villages between Newburn and the city, commemorates one of their positions. Newburn and nearby Lemington had always been considered among the greenest areas of Newcastle, and in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, the majority of vegetables supplied to local markets came from Newburn and Hexham. Prior to the early 19th century, the majority of employment in the Newburn area was for fishermen, keelmen and miners.

10 The district has many associations with the early development of the railway. The famous engineer George Stephenson, who was born in Wylam a few miles to the west of Newburn, was twice married in Newburn Church, where his remains are interred, and worked in the Water Row pit in Newburn. The village is also the birthplace of an earlier steam pioneer William Hedley, whose first locomotive Puffing Billy was built in 1812, two years prior to his rival’s first locomotive. A gravestone in Newburn churchyard marks his death in 1843. In 1822 John Spencer established Newburn Steelworks in a small mill for grinding files, on the Dewley Burn in the north of Newburn. Over the course of next
Community Buzz 01.indd 10
hundred or so years his mill grew to take over much of Newburn as the demand for steel boomed with the growth of railways and other industries. By the late 19th century, the works had spread to the east of the village along the banks of the Tyne to such an extent Newburn Hall was “embedded” in them. In 1916 the mill had a weekly output of 1,500 tons. Steel plates for the liner Mauretania were made by Spencers. However the industry was hit hard by the depression after the First World War and the steel works closed between 1924 and 1926, despite a large effort to raise £75,000 needed to save the works. The works’ large number of 130-foot (40 m) high chimneys were demolished in 1933. A number of buildings connected
with the works still stand today, although with new uses, including two large sheds which are now owned by H. Pringle, used as a large indoor scrapyard, and offices. In the 1850s, the Newburn Brickworks was built as part of the North Wallbottle and Blucher Colliery Company. The works were situated near Spencer’s early mill in the north of Newburn. It was connected to the colliery at Blucher by a small railway, which continued onto the staithes at Lemington. Newburn bricks were mainly used for industrial buildings such as sewers, tunnels and arches. The works closed in 1965 and demolished in 1979 to make way for a council run recycling centre.

Why it is important to make a will Whether or not you consider you have many possessions or much money. It is important to make a will because:if you die without a will, there are certain rules which dictate how the money, property or possessions should be allocated. This may not be the way that you would have wished your money and possessions to be distributed n
n unmarried
partners and partners who have not registered a civil partnership cannot inherit from each other unless there is a will, so the death of one partner may create serious financial problems for the remaining partner n if
you have children, you will need to make a will so that arrangements for the children can be made if either one or both parents die
n it may be possible to reduce
the amount of tax payable on the inheritance if advice is taken in advance and a will is made. n if
your circumstances have changed, it is important that you make a will to ensure that your money and possessions are distributed according to your wishes. To save time and reduce costs you should give some thought to the major points which you want included in your will. You should consider such things as:-
who should look after any children under 18 n
how much money and what property and possessions you have, for example, property, savings, occupational and personal pensions, insurance policies, bank and building society accounts, shares n
It’s never too soon but often too late.

who you want to benefit from your will. You should make a list of all the people to whom you wish to leave money or possessions. These people are known as beneficiaries. You also needs to consider whether you wish to leave any money to charity n
who is going to be the executors of your will, the person who will sort out the estate and carry out your wishes as set out in the will. n

15 Financial Matters Pensions
But, as we are all living for longer, the pension age is starting to rise and is likely to reach at least 68 for all men and women just setting out on their working life .
Parents are twice as likely to talk to their children about the birds and the bees than they are about pensions, according to a government survey. A lack of awareness about saving for retirement is among the reasons for millions of people not saving enough to pay for the lifestyle their expect when they grow old.
To get a full state pension you need to have paid National Insurance contributions - usually deducted from your pay packet - for 30 years.
So what should be considered when starting to save for a pension?
Correct. Pensioners do get more from the benefits system but this still means money can be tight for many years, even if you have worked for your whole life.
What is the basic state pension? This is the income which the state provides to people who have reached pension age. At the moment, it is up to ÂŁ113.10 a week.
Community Buzz 01.indd 15
You can use a pensions calculator to work out how much to save. Pensions experts say that you should topup the pension provision from the state with a workplace pension or a private pension speak to a reputable independent financial advisor to get the best advice.
That does not sound like much to live on?
So does it pay to start saving early? It certainly does, especially because compound interest means if you save regularly from a young age, you will be better off than if you save more later in life.

Problems in the chain when buying or selling a home are common However, there are things you can do to help the home buying process go smoothly.
Buying a home for the first time First-time buyers hold a strong position and will regarded as a good bet since you have none of the problems for example chains, this should help you get a good buy. But don’t make the mistake of bidding too low as this may lead to resentment by the seller and you may be gazumped. Establish how quick the seller wants to move and does that fit with your circumstances, if they are in a hurry you may get a better buy. Also dont forget to communicate with the buyer or their estate agent, dont just go off on holiday, or ignore paperwork if you dont understand it, raise the concerns with either the estate agent or your solicitor immediately.

How To:
To help you narrow down your decision, here are some questions to ask yourself.
Choose Your Wedding Dress
How Does it Fit?
This dress will be photographed, and that picture then beautifully framed and proudly hung on your wall, it’s important to get it right. It’s also only a dress, and it’s a large part of the experience .
How it fits your body, and the season and theme of your wedding .Winter wedding needs heavier fabrics, like satin, summer weddings -lighter. What colour & style is the groom wearing? Think about all these factors as they influence the fabric, length and style of your dress.
Research & Budget The first thing you need to do is some research exploring decide your style Strapless? Sleeves? Bolero? What colour White, Silk, Diamond or ivory, bling? Buy Magazines. According to experts 10% of your total budget is about right.
Does it Flatter My Shape? Not every dress is going to suit every bride, find something that accentuates your best assets, while cleverly disguising the bits you’re not
so happy about. A dress looks vastly different on the hanger, keep an open mind try a few on.
Which Colour Should I Pick? There’s the traditional white route, then your skin tone will dictate the particular shade you choose. Fair skin suits ivory or antique white, medium-toned works with diamond white, olive with champagne, and dark skinned brides wear bright whites beautifully.

Ma’ida - Table Spread WE LOVE it when we go out for an Indian meal at Ma’ida Table Spread it’s something special. Usually it is Ma’ida and with them being connoisseurs of that style of cooking, we are more than happy to follow their lead. Invariably we all end up ordering more than we could possibly devour, but we all taste each other’s to sample as much as we can. Ma’ida Table Spread in Walbottle, offers a deliciously different dining experience in the most elegant of settings.
Community Buzz 01.indd 24
The name Ma’ida simply means table spread of food, dining table or banquet. The cuisine is truly Asian with a real emphasis on using the healthiest and freshest ingredients. Milestone Hall, the converted building where the restaurant is housed, has been completely refurbished. It now has state-of-theart fixtures and fittings, including the striking and relaxing art feature reception walls filled with flowing water and a bubble wall inside the dining area.
It is a light, clean, airy and welcoming space, providing a relaxing and inviting atmosphere and the staff are all really welcoming and attentive. Mohammed leads the front of house and is the brains behind the decor and installations. He wants to encourage a calm atmosphere and that even goes as far as the ergonomically designed seating and it definitely works!
20/05/2014 11:13
25
The cuisine is based around Bangladeshi and North West Asian recipes and incorporates many fusion dishes from various parts of India. Alcohol is not on sale on the premises, but diners can bring their own wine or beer, we found ourselves bringing in a couple of bottles of wine in cooler jackets it was a great different experience the first time we visited Ma’ida. Truth be told, you don’t need any booze, as the non-alcoholic offerings are a delight, from the mocktails to the lassi – a kind of soured yoghurt drink. The mango-flavoured one is tremendous. In fact, the non-sale of alcohol may even add appeal to those guests that prioritise the enjoyment of the food with a family-friendly atmosphere. The menu is terrific. The fish tikka (£5.50) of fish marinated in Tandoori spices and herbs had a great warmth to it, as did the wonderful crab piri piri (£4.90). We couldn’t fault the paneer tikka (£4.90) – Indian vegetarian cheese marinated in tandoori spices and
Community Buzz 01.indd 25
grilled – or the golda chingree baza (£4.90) dish of giant king prawns in spices and lime juice wrapped in spinach and then deep fried. The mains selection is perhaps the best I have seen in an Indian and you can have any dish as hot or mild as you like my husband ordered his to a unique mild tasty flavour, Hariali which is chicken breast marinated and barbecued in the tandoori, cooked with Hara sauce (made from fresh crushed garlic, ginger, green chillies it had a distinctive green colour and was spiced just right . We all recommend the Ma’ida Stuffed Chicken which was filled with spicy potato, and spices and then cooked slowly, Mohammed told me that these were made fresh every morning (£10.90) . My chicken pakora did the business and the dish has a unique tangy flavour (as stated on the menu). my friends staple of lamb tikka masala was replaced by mango ajwa (£9 .90) – chicken with mango pulp and cream (which is now her new favourite).
The Kandahari – a favourite in Afghanistan – consists of spicy sheek kebabs while the uree bisi chicken (£10.90) is cooked with runner beans and green chilli. I cannot compliment the meals enough. Every bite was a delight and a joy for the taste buds I just wish I had more space to sample other dishes! The rice dishes were a treat too, as were the sundries we tucked into the chopped salad that came with the papadums was the best I have tried it took all my will power not to fill up on those first. That said, we did somehow find room to try out a selection of desserts which were as tasty as what had gone before. Ma’ida offers a unique take on Asian food and dining. It deserves to be a huge success it has become. Ma’ida are open 5.30-11.00pm everyday at Hexham Road Walbottle. NE15 9SR 0191 267 0987 www.maidatablespread.com

The Basics of Triple Glazing Letting in light was once the sole function of a window but no longer. Glazing is now expected to contribute towards the thermal properties of our homes and triple glazing outperforms the rest. Originally devised for the harsh winters of Canada and Scandinavian countries, triple glazing could reduce the heat loss through the windows by a third more than efficient double glazing, and the sound insulation is improved too. By 2016 new homes are intended to be zero carbon, so what are you waiting for?
Why Choose Triple Glazing? The main benefit is in thermal insulation. As the house will stay warmer, less energy will be used in heating it - good for the environment and for your pocket. Juliet Wood of Jones Architects, specialists in projects with low environmental impact, used triple glazing in her own new build home. ‘We were restricted on window sizes at the rear of our building because it overlooks a school, so designed the house with a huge, opening roof light above the living room and mezzanine bedroom area. The roof light was made in the UK and framed in steel for structural strength. Triple glazing was the best option, allowing us maximum size without excessive heat loss. Another benefit is that the sound insulation is much improved.’
Community Buzz 01.indd 28
Where Can I Use Triple Glazing? Use it for windows, doors, roof lights or a wall of glass. Triple glazed units weigh more than double glazing, this isn’t a problem in vertical glazing, such as windows, where the walls and lintels can easily carry the weight. ‘If you’re including large patio doors, or sliding, folding doors, the system provider will adjust the frame size for the extra weight of the glazing. If you’re considering a large roof light, your structural engineer will size the joists and glazing bars accordingly.’
How Does Triple Glazing Work?
through the window slightly, but the amount is negligible, especially if you’re using the glazing in a large area; the trade off is that because the thermal performance improves, you can have a bigger surface of glass.’ To improve the energy values, lowemissivity metallic coatings can be added. These reflect back some of the heat back into the house which would otherwise be lost through the glazing. As the coatings are soft - they can be made of gold they’re put on the inner surfaces to prevent them being scratched. The glass can also be toughened, as it is for windscreens, so that if broken it forms small pieces without sharp edges, or laminated, which if damaged may crack but should hold together.
It’s the club sandwich of window design. While double glazing consists of two layers of glass with an air gap between them, triple glazing gives you three layers of glass and two air gaps. Just as with double glazing, the glass can be treated to make it more energy efficient, and the air gap can be filled with an inert gas such as argon, to help to reduce the heat loss.
What Are The Glazing Options? Adding an extra layer of glass doesn’t make your home noticeably darker. ‘Each layer of glass does diminish the light transmittance

Want to speed up fat burning while doing nothing? Give these 6 super foods a whirl. They’ll help boost your metabolism AND burn up calories.
Green Tea
Brown rice
This popular refreshment is said to inhibit fat absorption and keep your blood sugar levels stable. Have at least four cups a day and you’ll probably notice that it helps curb your appetite, too.
Your body burns this grain slowly so it helps to keep you satisfied for longer because your blood sugar is kept at an even level. Brown rice also contains a powerful combination of B vitamins essential for fat burning, and helps clear liver congestion, too.
Chilli Just as this spice can set alight your taste buds and make your eyes and nose run, it spices things up on the inside, too. Chillies and peppers contain capsaicin, a chemical that gets the system racing and makes your body more likely to burn calories than convert them to fat. Some studies suggest your body is 25% more efficient at burning fat for up to 3 hours after eating capsaicin-containing foods.
Pineapple The iodine in this tropical fruit is great for keeping the thyroid gland healthy. The thyroid controls how quickly your body burns energy – simply explained, if it’s under-active you’ll be fatigued and prone to putting on weight; over-active and you’ll be nervy and slim.
Salmon & sunflower seeds Both of these are examples of foods that contain zinc; zinc is needed for Leptin to work properly. Leptin is a hormone that regulates how we use energy; it’s the gatekeeper of the body’s metabolism. The high protein count in both salmon and sunflower seeds will keep you satisfied for longer and help you maintain a healthy blood sugar level. It’s a nice thought that you can lose weight while in an armchair, but to really boost your metabolism you will need to exercise more. Muscles take more energy to maintain than fat, so exercising hard to firm up your body will release more fat to maintain them.
Ginger This woody spice creates bodily heat that kick starts your fat burning system. Avoid ginger too close to bedtime when you want to calm down as it’s a stimulant. Grate it into soups, curries and salads (go easy – it’s strong) or chop up a few slices and gently simmer in water for a reviving, spicy drink.

The work is a spectacular twelve metre-long panorama of Mars set hundreds of years in the future, battered by dust storms and littered with the debris of our missions to unlock the secrets of the Red Planet. Taking NASA’s own imagery and technical data of the Martian landscape, and using Terragen, a complex scenery generation software used by the film and gaming industries, Kelly has created an uber-realistic red planet, minutely replicating its distinctive geology, weather patterns and soundscape to make a mind-blowing, incredibly immersive experience that you won’t want to miss. May & June Gardening Calender Grow cut Flowers Buying cut flowers can be costly, so why not try growing your own in the garden? Whether you give them a dedicated space or mix them into a border display, it’s easy to raise lots of flowers for a constant supply of fresh blooms Most flowering plants prefer a sunny spot with well drained, fertile soil and some shelter from strong winds that could flatten stems or
damage blooms. An allotment has traditionally been used for growing dahlias and chrysanthemums in long-serried rows, but if you’ve only got a small garden, this isn’t possible. However, many perennial flowers and bulbs can be grown in a border, while half hardy annuals can be grown wherever there’s an empty space.
What to grow?
Half hardy annuals
These flowers are among the easiest you can grow. Sow seed directly into the soil, or in seed trays between March and May, and you’ll quickly have a supply of flowers. Among the best for cutting are the tobacco plants, including Nicotiana alata ‘Lime Green’, which has acid green blooms and N. sylvestris, whose stately white flowers look wonderful in a vase.

Zinnias come in lots of hot colours, including pink, orange and red, while snapdragons and tithonia (Mexican sunflower) are also worth growing. Cosmos has striking flowers - try ‘Purity’ for its white blooms and ‘Dazzler’ for its shocking pink tone. For something unusual, cleome or the spider flower is hard to beat. Among the best is white ‘Helen Campbell’.
Biennials These flowers need sowing between May and July, and will flower the next year. Perhaps the best biennials for cutting are wallflowers - there are many different varieties in lots of different shades. Erysimum cheiri ‘Fire King’, has orange flowers and Erysimum ‘Blood Red’, very dark red blooms.
Sweet Williams also make good cut-and-come-again flowers Dianthus barbatus ‘Nigricans’ has spikes of dark purple flowers.
Perennials These will provide you with lots of flowers, year after year. For long and prolific flower production, These will provide you with lots of flowers, year after year. For long and prolific flower production, dahlias are hard to beat and can be grown en-masse or dotted into a border.

6 Ways to burn calories at home We all have days when there’s no time to get to the gym. So we wondered: Which close-to-home cardio activities blast fat fastest? Wonder no more. Here are the top seven fat-and-calorie burners, from Los Angeles–based celeb trainer Ramona Braganza, who has helped shape the amazing bodies of stars like Jessica Alba, Halle Berry, and Anne Hathaway. Try any one of these, and you’ll boost your metabolism for up to a whole day afterward. One small workout, one giant
1 Roller skating
Burns 425 calories in 30 minutes Skating is numero uno on our list when it comes to blasting fat and calories. The big burn stems from the side-to-side movement of your thigh and butt muscles. And your core gets involved in a big way to keep you balanced. What’s more, you get all these benefits without putting too much stress on your knees and other joints. Skate at a strong, steady pace. (Don’t forget your helmet, wrist guards, and knee and elbow pads.)
Boost the burn: Alternate fast and slow intervals, or take to the hills there’s plenty round here.
3 Skipping
Burns 340 calories in 30 minutes You knew this workout had to be high on the list. After all, it’s one of pro boxers’ favorite ways to train. To get the most from each jump, use a rope with handles that reach to just under your armpits when you stand on the middle of it, and follow these topform tips: Jump with your feet slightly apart and body upright, and keep your jumps low to the ground. Don’t have a skipping rope? You’ll get the same benefits by doing the movements rope-free. Boost the burn: Frequently switch up your speed (slow, fast) and style (jumping with one foot, then two feet), or jump rope while you jog.
Boost the burn: Alternate one minute of hard skating with one minute of medium-paced strokes
4 Hula hooping
2 Running
Beyoncé hoops to keep her body beautiful. To do it yourself, grab an adult-sized hoop (they’re larger and heavier than kids’ hoops, making them easier to spin); you’ll know you have the right size if it reaches your chest when you stand it up in front of you. Simply keep it going around your waist. To start, stand with one foot in front of the other and shift your weight back and forth (versus around in a circle). And don’t worry if you’re less than perfect at first; you’ll still knock off major calories, plus get better every time you spin.
Burns 374 calories in 30 minutes The typical runner’s shape is sleek and lean, and there’s a reason for that: The major running muscles—legs, butt, core—happen to be the biggest calorie-and-fatburning muscles in your body. To get the most out of each stride, swing your arms close to your body, don’t lean forward, and keep your feet low to the ground. To lessen impact, land on the middle of your foot, then roll through to your toes.

5 Dancing Burns 221 calories in 30 minutes This may not be the biggest calorie-burner in the bunch, but it’s still an excellent—and fun!—metabolism booster. (Just look at Kelly Osbourne, who jump-started her amazing 42-pound loss on Dancing with the Stars.) The key is to keep the tempo high, choosing songs with fast rhythms like Latin or Bollywood, and don’t rest between songs. Try Braganza’s favourite trick: Download a workout’s worth of your favourite tunes. Begin with an upbeat inspirational song (think “Just Dance” by Lady Gaga), then move on to songs with increasingly faster tempos. Slow the beat toward the end to cool down. Boost the burn: Use your arms! Raise them in the air and move them to the beat
6 Walking vigorously
Burns 170 calories in 30 minutes That’s right, walking actually made our list. Full disclosure, though: A leisurely stroll with a friend won’t cut it. You should be walking briskly enough that it’s difficult to keep up a steady conversation. To get the most from your biggest calorie-burning muscles—legs, bum, and core—take short, quick steps, keep your torso upright, and pump your arms back and forth (not side to side) in time with your stride. With each step, land on your heel and roll through to your toes. Boost the burn: Alternate two minutes of brisk strides with one minute of as-fast-as-you-can-go walking (or jogging).

Create a headboard that’s personal to you 1. Make chalk marks on the wall at the edges and top of the bed and mark the height of where you’d like the headboard to be. Once marked, move the bed out of the way. 2. Measure from the floor to the top of the proposed headboard, then make a mark at the halfway point, equidistant from the marks at the bed edges. Tie a pencil to a length of string, hold pencil at the top mark and the string at the centre mark and draw a circle on the wall. Fill the circle in with Chartreuse Mix Feature Wall paint and leave to dry.

3. To make the cross, use a spirit level to make tramline marks on the wall around 7cm apart, both vertically and horizontally. Stick masking tape along the marks, ensuring the intersection corners are neat. 4. Paint the cross using Scrumptious Feature Wall paint, going slightly over the masking tape then wait for the paint to dry before removing the tape.

Choosing a good garage Car services are a fundamental part of looking after your vehicle. A service will not only help your car run at its optimum, it will make your vehicle more efficient which could save you money and be safer to drive. It is important to have a service carried out ny a trained mechanic as they could spot damage early and prevent further costs if something were to go wrong with your car. It is unlikely that you will be able to spot any potential problems yourself. Follow the tips below to make sure you get the best service
Prepare notes Write down your car’s model, age, mileage, engine size, fuel type and registration number. Check the owners’ handbook for which service you require (for example, 12,000-mile or 1-year service) and the main tasks included.
Community Buzz 01.indd 46
Decide what needs changing (such as engine oil, oil filter, spark plugs, air filter), and what needs checking (such as brakes, tyres, lights, suspension, and so on).
Shop around Costs even vary between franchised dealers, so don’t just return to the one where you bought your car. You can now get your car serviced at a non-franchised garage without invalidating your warranty, so check out local garages for prices too.
If you do go to an independent garage, ensure it is VAT-registered and make sure the parts and fluids used are genuine manufacturer products. Get receipts and part serial numbers to prove this. Check what the quote includes Make sure it includes all parts, labour and VAT.
Keep the book stamped Ask whether the garage will stamp the service book and, if your car has a service warning light or reminder, whether it will reset this after servicing.
