Keeping the kids warm this Winter The snow has arrived early this year and if you’re a parent your children probably can’t wait to get outside to go sledging or make a snowman, despite the chill. Don’t miss this opportunity to see them enjoy outdoor play! Encourage an adventurous spirit, safe in the knowledge that you are keeping them warm this winter with our top tips Keep your children fueled up. Whether they are off to school or going out to play set them up with a hot meal before they face the elements. It doesn’t need to be anything fancy; homemade soup or cheese and baked beans on toast will do fine as a warming snack, at breakfast time give them porridge with honey (both beans and oats are a great source of slow release energy) Wrap up. This may seem obvious but there are some very simple ways to protect your children from the harsh weather this winter buy investing in some specialist clothing. Thermal

items are easy to find so before they go out in freezing conditions wrap them up in thermal varieties of underwear (vests, leggings and tights), socks, scarves and gloves or mittens. Mittens can be more warming than gloves so if you can persuade your little angels that they can still make a great snowman with mittens on then do so. If you have salopettes from a previous skiing holiday don’t be afraid to put them to good use and always dress children in an appropriate coat that covers them to at least the hip area. Layer clothing in order that heat may get trapped between each item, and tuck vests into pants or trousers rather than pulling over the outside Be sure they have Headwear. Make sure that hats cover your children‘s ears as this will really make a difference when trying to keep heat in. ‘Deer stalkers’ or hats with earflaps are fantastic for this and you can get some gorgeous cute ear muffs which little girls love in their favourite colours

Make sure feet are covered with waterproof footwear in the snow. Wellies with thermal socks are a great option, or even better get them some snow boots. For longer walks or play away from home fill a flask with hot chocolate or soup to keep them feeling snug. Children will accept almost any kind of soup from a flask cup when out in the cold because it’s so novel, so take advantage by making a homemade vegetable variety and filling them full of vitamins, fibre and nutrients. They will love warming their hands on the cup too. Invest in some reusable hand warmers. These clever little gel packs are usually available from camping shops. They are fab for freezing conditions and can be used again and again. Just click to activate and some will stay warm for up to 24 hrs!

The Power of Hearing For many people, hearing loss is a natural part of the aging process, and the onset is so gradual they aren’t aware that their hearing is deteriorating. Hearing loss can also be caused by ear infections, genetic medical conditions, illness, traumatic injury or prolonged exposure to noise.

YOU’RE NOT ALONE

A COMMON PROBLEM

TODAY’S HEARING INSTRUMENTS ARE DIFFERENT

Hearing loss is one of the world’s most common health problems, it is also one of the most ignored problems, and this is unfortunate because hearing loss and its many psychological side effects are highly treatable.

HEARING WITHOUT UNDERSTANDING Hearing loss is not like listening to sounds with the volume turned down. Instead, you may notice that certain spoken sounds - like sh, th and f - are more difficult to hear than others. That’s why people with hearing loss often say they can hear people talking but can’t understand what is being said.

If you’re suffering with an untreated hearing loss, you may feel isolated and frustrated - like you’re missing out on life. Those around you may be feeling frustrated too. It’s important to know you’re not alone. Approximately 1 in 10 people experiences some degree of hearing loss. Happily, about 90% of these people can be helped with the use of hearing instruments.

Today there’s a whole new class of hearing instruments. Digital technology is providing hearing instrument wearers with far better sound quality, reduced background noise and greater customisation capabilities. Today’s hearing instruments also look better than traditional hearing instruments, with a wide range of discreet styles and sizes to fit your lifestyle. If you think you have a hearing loss or would like more information about the signs of hearing loss, talk to a hearing healthcare professional. We’re here to help.

THE PROBLEM CAN GROW While most hearing losses do not cause physical pain, they can lead to social and psychological problems. These include: breakdown of communication, social isolation, employment difficulties, depression, frustration and loss of self-esteem. Untreated hearing loss in children can delay the development of speech, language and learning skills.

Keep your hair looking good in the winter Avoiding the problem? Frosty mornings and For those with an oily scalp, wash wintry gales wreak the scalp and roots only or use a dry shampoo and wash the scalp only. havoc with our hair, which can look lank and Don’t over rinse your hair until it’s squeaky because this means the lacklustre until spring. conditioning agents and natural oils A total of 95 per cent of British people suffer from unsightly hair and 33 per cent lack the energy to style their hair during the cold, dark months.

Dry hair Dry, straw-like hair is a common problem – the result of cold, windy weather, low humidity and extreme temperature changes, exacerbated by central heating and over-use of heated hair styling appliances.

have been stripped out, making hair brittle and prone to splitting.

Conditioners Condition your hair after every wash and, for very dry hair, condition your hair between washes. Try also using a pre-shampoo treatment or mask every week to keep your hair supple and moist. To make your own, combine half a mashed avocado, one egg yolk and five tablespoons of coconut milk. Gently massage into the scalp and leave for 15 to 20 minutes before rinsing.

Cool rinses Rinse your hair with tepid water, but switch to cool water for the final rinse, which seals the cuticle and prevents the hair becoming brittle. Wash your hair the night before to avoid going out with damp hair to prevent split ends. Reduce friction on the hair by wearing hats that let air circulate because heavy hats can lift the cuticle and strip the hair of moisture.

Low heat Avoid using a hairdryer because the heat vaporises the water beneath the cuticle, which dries the hair. If you have to use the hairdryer, use the nozzle attachment, put it on its coolest setting, hold it at least 12 inches away, and apply a protective, anti-frizz serum product beforehand. But during winter, it’s best to leave your hair to dry naturally or pat or gently squeeze the hair. But do not rub it dry because this lifts the cuticles, leading to further moisture loss. Don’t over brush or comb because this damages hair cuticles, causing them to weaken and break.

Tips use styles during the winter months that avoid heat appliances. If you want curly hair, wash it the night before, apply leave-in conditioner and plait it before going to bed. Remove the plaits in the morning and you will achieve nice, wavy hair. Or use non-metallic hair clips to create curls. For straight, fine hair use non-heated, plastic rollers and a moisturising styling product to protect the hair. For thick, straight hair, twist your hair back in a loose ponytail and use one big, non metallic clip to fasten it. ‘If you do have to use a heated appliance, make sure you use moisturising styling sprays and heat defence protectors which smooth down the hair cuticle and protect before styling.’

Winter Warmers

Cauliflower, Broccoli and Mustard Soup Cauliflower, Broccoli, Mustard Soup is the perfect soup recipe for a cold winters night. What could be better than a bowl of hot soup and crusty bread to keep the chill out? Old favorite, cauliflower, matches up with broccoli, mustard and cheese to create a filling soup sufficient to eat as a main course or a smaller portion for a starter.

Ingredients n 50g / 2oz unsalted butter n 1 large clove garlic, finely chopped n ½ tsp dry English mustard powder n 1 medium cauliflower n 1 small head broccoli n 1 litre/ 2 pints vegetable stock n 1 large potato, peeled and cubed n 1 tbsp wholegrain mustard n 50ml / 4 tbsp crème fraiche n Sea salt and black pepper

Carrot & Ginger soup

Prep Time: 10 minutes Cook Time: 25 minutes Total Time: 35 minutes Preparation

Carrot and Ginger Soup brightens a winter’s day but is also perfect in the lighter months. This Carrot and Ginger Soup Recipe is packed with healthy fresh, carrots and warming, tingling spices of ginger and a light sprinkling of curry powder which gives it a slight kick.

In a large saucepan or stock pot melt the butter, add the onion and cook slowly until translucent, stirring constantly. Add the garlic and cook for a further 2 minutes taking care not to burn. Stir in the mustard powder. Meanwhile, remove the leaves from the cauliflower and cut into florets and steam with the broccoli until almost tender. Add to the onion, and cover with vegetable stock. Add the potato and bring to the boil, then simmer for 15 minutes or until the potato is cooked. Purée the soup in a food processor, return to the pan, adding the mustard and crème fraiche. Bring back to the boil, reduce the heat and simmer for 5 minutes. Season to taste with sea salt and black pepper.

To serve Place 50g/ 2 oz of grated cheese in the centre of a warmed soup bowl. Surround with the soup and top with croutons.

This soup freezes well, so make a large batch. The carrots give the soup a lovely sweetness, so children really like it and its good for part of the 5-a-day. It is quite a filling soup, so you could serve it for lunch as a snack meal with cheese and fruit afterwards.

Ingredients n 1 ½ lbs/700g carrots, peeled and chopped n 2 medium onions, peeled and roughly chopped n 1 clove garlic, peeled and crushed n 3 tbsp extra virgin olive oil n 1 tsp powdered ginger n 1 tsp medium curry powder n 3 pints /1.6 litres chicken or vegetable stock n Sea salt and black pepper n Rind of 1 lemon, finely shredded

Booking that British Summer Holiday Remember last summer? Remember that sun? It’s difficult to imagine right now, I know, but for many people who took a summer holiday in Britain last year it was truly glorious. The million-pound question is: will it do it again in 2015? As we can never know the answer until it’s too, perhaps a more pertinent question is: why take a summer holiday in Britain at all? Several reasons spring immediately to mind. When the weather is lovely in this country, you feel almost tearful with gratitude. It elevates the everyday. Also, anyone who has seen the vast sandflats and huge skies of eastern England, or the rugged Outer Hebrides, or the pretty

out of the window some years ago, we have been flummoxed by hot springs, wet summers, warm winters and glorious autumns, sometimes the other way around, and sometimes all four in a single day. The penny has finally dropped that a variegated climate demands a variegated holiday offering, and most British destinations have stepped up to the plate.

The Village Green 1910. which was the heart of the village. Recreational activies such as Maypole dancing and quoits were a regular sight and once at the top of the green was a pond. In 1939-1945 a public air-raid shelter was dug into the green, but was never used as it filled with water.

Focus on Walbottle Walbottle - is a small village situated on the line of the Roman Wall. The village name was recorded in 1176 as Walbotl derived from the Old English Botl (building). Bede, in his Ecclesiastical History of the English People, refers to a royal estate called Ad Murum near the Roman Wall where, in 653 AD, the King of the Middle Angles, Peada, and the King of the East Saxons, Sigeberht, were both baptised into the Christian faith by Bishop Finan, having been persuaded to do so by King Oswy of Northumbria. Historians have identified Ad Murum with Walbottle. Roman remains have also been found in the vicinity and The site of Roman Milecastle number 10 is situated along with Turret 9B within Walbottle village opposite Hawthorn Terrace.

Walbottle village is bounded to the west by Wallbottle Dene and the east by the village of Bulcher, named after the Field Marshal Blucher of Prussia who combined with the Duke of Wellington to defeat Napoleon at the Battle of Waterloo 1812-1814. Two pits named after the allied generals were first sunk around this time. The Heart of the Village is the Village green - one of only a handful left in Newcastle. Originally it had its duckpond, and later a pant (communal water supply) and horse trough. Now the green is grassed over and forms a lovely feature from

which can be seen magnificent views up and over the Tyne Valley. Walbottle have had a number of famous residents, Both George Stephenson and Timothy Hackworth, who can fairly be called the joint fathers of steam railways, worked at Walbottle Colliery in the early 19th century. At the same time the engineer at the Walbottle colliery, was Robert Hawthorn, an ingenious and enterprising engineer who financed his two sons to open the well known Hawthorn Leslie works in Newcastle. Hawthorn Terrace and Hawthorn Street were named after him.

The main local industries of the time were coal mining and Agriculture, the coal mines named the Duke, Blucher and Coronation pits being the best known. There were also three farms within the village boundaries - The Village or Colliery Farm, Fell house farm and Dene head farm.

1.

To the south of the village ran the railway track from Callerton to Lemington Staiths which still can be seen. Further south stood the Brickworks and sand quarry while to the North East of the village green was the stone quarry owned by the Duke of Northumberland- as was all the land and property in the village. Stone from the quarry was transported from walbottle to the Dukes residence in Middlesex (Syon House) via the Tyne and Thames and used as the facing stones on the property. Walbottle has made its contribution to the world. Now with the passing of the coal and steel industries it has been returned to being a pleasant country village with the only village green in the Newcastle district. Local people are keen that it remains the peaceful village it is.

Walbottle Dene - The Rush hour, 1918 The Throckley-Walbottle boundary was situated approximately 150 yards west of the view shown. Trees were planted by the 1st Duke of Northumberland in 1766. Newburn Urban District Council were given the area by the 9th Duke Of Northumberland in 1932.

In this picture you can see the The Engine Inn 1912 (it was originally called the Locomotive Engine), which is now known as The Smithy’s. It stands ona site once occupied by a stationairy steam engine used to haul waggons up the Walbottle incline on their way to the Collierys.

Real Guide to Losing Weight Whether you’ve just hopped on the train to weight loss or you’ve been riding the journey for some time, a little inspiration and helpful tips can make all the difference in keeping you on track. And who better to get advice from than those who are on the same healthy path? We have researched different articles to find different peoples experiences and advise – you’re sure to appreciate their heartfelt and effective tips. 1. The first thing to do is to make a change and don’t look back. “Start! Talking never lost a pound!” said Chris.

8. Don’t worry about the number on the scale (Pete said to throw it out!); just focus on being healthy and moving every day. 9. Slow and steady wins the race! Take it one day at a time. Aim for a pound or two a week.

15. Always have healthy snacks on hand; Emma said, “embrace fruits and vegetables as snacks.” 16. “Hold yourself accountable but have fun and stay positive!” Along the same lines, Teresa shared, “Be consistent and be kind to yourself.”

10. The 80/20 diet was key for Sara. “Follow an 80/20 plan for the week so 20 percent of the time you can ‘treat’ yourself and 80 percent of the time, you are good.” 11. Do it for yourself and no one else. 2. Set small, reasonable, and attainable goals; these add up and make a big difference in the long run. 3. Motivate yourself by finding ways to celebrate your victories!

17. Get enough sleep.

4. Everything in moderation. “Balance is key. Depriving yourself of everything you love only leads to binges later,” said Lesley. 5. Put it down on paper! Plan out your meals, snacks, and workouts, too.

12. Cardio isn’t enough; strength training will change the way you look.

6. Don’t be afraid to sweat! Do 30 to 45 minutes of cardio five times a week, and vary your workouts.

13. Gemma makes an excellent point: “Remember to focus on the best version of your body, not anyone else’s.”

7. Some say to count calories, while others say to just eat smaller portions. What is clear is keeping an eye on the foods you eat.

14. It’s amazing how many people said to “eat clean” and “drink lots of water.”

18. “Make it about a lifestyle change vs. a temporary fix.” Find healthy foods and exercise that you enjoy - diets and forced exercise do not work. Create healthy habits, not restrictions. 19. Get support and find friends who are going on this journey too. 20. The overall message here was “never give up,” and they agreed with Steve who said, “Just because your willpower wanes for a minute, it doesn’t mean the whole day is a wash. Start over and don’t get down on yourself.” Tomorrow is a new day for a fresh start.

February - The Cruel Month One of this month’s cruellest tricks is to offer brief mild moments that can lull you into a false sense of security, so you think it’s time to get sowing. Hold back, as even the hardiest seeds will struggle to get going outside. If in doubt, wait, as what’s sown today will be outstripped in growth by its March cousins.

Vegetable garden Start sowing broad beans and early peas. The safest method is to start off in pots or trays indoors. Once the seedlings are strong, harden them off and then plant out. In sheltered spots, sow radish, spinach, peas and parsnips outside. Sow slightly more shallowly than you would normally, as wet ground rots seeds. Continue to dig over and manure soils as they become workable. Carry on chitting (that is, sprouting) seed potatoes somewhere light and cool. Force rhubarb plants for an early crop. Plant new rhubarb crowns now. If the ground is workable, plant out Jerusalem artichoke tubers, spring cabbage plugs, shallots and onions sets.

Under glass Sow Onions, Celeriac, leeks, globe artichokes, celery and celeriac now under glass. You can either sow into pots and plant out the seedlings into the ground when large enough Sow greenhouse peppers, tomatoes and aubergines at the end of the month. In cold frames, greenhouses or polytunnels, sow beetroot, broad beans, summer and autumn cabbage, carrots, kales, lettuce and spring onions. These can all be sown in trays to be planted out towards the end of March.

Order your seeds and plug plants online now. Having a garden plan drawn up will help you decide the quantities you need. Order your onion sets and asparagus crowns now ready for planting in the spring. Order flower bulbs for summer colour such as Lily of the Valley , Lilies and Gladioli in preparation for spring planting.

ARTIFICIAL GRASS C U LT I VAT E D T U R F

Start sowing bedding plants such as impatiens, violas and pansies in a heated propagator. Transplant when seedlings are forming their third or fourth leaf.

Flower garden Continue to mulch in the flower garden while you can still get between plants before spring growth starts. Mulch to a depth of at least 6in deep to suppress weeds. Prune autumn-fruiting raspberries. One method is to cut back all the growth to an inch long stub and mulch. If you want to extend your picking season, cut half back and leave half to give you extra early fruit. Prune your apple trees and pear trees whilst they’re still dormant. Leave plum trees, cherry trees and apricots until the summer. Prune blackcurrants, bushes, gooseberries and redcurrants to maintain a productive framework. Currant bushes can also still be planted between now and the spring. Protect the blossoms of apricots, peaches and nectarines. These stone fruit trees can also be planted now.

From your Armchair Plan your vegetable plot for this year to ensure good crop rotation and prevent pests and diseases building up in the soil.

Top tips to keep your skin looking gorgeous in winter Winter is here and along with the cool breeze, it also brings along a few skin problems. People experience irritation, hardness and roughness of skin. Incidents of itchy skin due to dryness and contact allergies due to detergents and chemicals also increase in this season. Cold temperatures result in poor blood circulation and widened capillaries and as a result, the skin suffers. But the cold alone isn’t responsible for this. The drop in humidity in addition to the use of heaters indoors also results in drying out the skin. Here are some skincare tips that will help you deal with winter beauty woes.

Bathe with lukewarm water Winter is the time when your skin and hair need maximum attention. Though the idea of piping hot water is very tempting, stick to a lukewarm water bath every day. Make sure you use a mild non-drying soap or a moisturising soap to prevent your skin from getting dry and itchy.

Keep your skin moisturised Choose a good, oil-based moisturiser to keep the skin moisturised and soft. Pay special attention to the exposed parts (and the most affected areas) like your hands, nails, feet and lips. Keep them well moisturised at all times. Use a lip balm to keep your lips soft and supple. Lip balm with SPF works better. Even those who have oily skin must use light moisturising lotions after cleansing to keep the skin soft.

Eating a healthy diet full of nutrients and vitamins is the best way to keep your hair and skin from looking and feeling healthy. Eating an unbalanced diet will leave your body lacking in the nutrition needed for keeping your skin and hair looking great. Eating well will also make you feel great too! If you have trouble with maintaining a balanced diet then take multivitamins, but remember that this is not an effective replacement for the real thing.

Use a good sunscreen

Drink lots of water People tend to drink less water during winters but it is highly important to hydrate your skin from within. Carry a bottle of water with you whenever you step outside. Herbal tea is also a great remedy to moisturise your skin from within. Don’t leave your skin thirsty. Drink more water and help your skin retain its shine.

Eat a balanced diet

Do not lick your lips Winter is the season of chapped lips and licking them will make them more chapped. Instead, use a good lip balm, preferably which contains tea tree oil as it helps heal painful cracks.

People like to enjoy the sun during winters but little do they know that exposure to the sun can harm their skin in winter too. Use a sunscreen of SPF 15 or more when you step out in the open. In fact, it should be a part of your daily routine throughout the year. Don’t say goodbye to your sunscreen just because summer is over.

Winter Driving Before you set out: n Check tyres for adequate tread. Poor tyres will not grip when driving on snow and ice. If you live in an area where snow is common it might be worth changing to winter tyres with deeper tread n Use a good quality screenwash that protects down to at least -35 to prevent the water from freezing. If you don’t, your windscreen wipers could be rendered useless in extreme conditions

n Use lukewarm water or de-icer to defrost the outside of your vehicle. You should never use hot or boiling water n Make sure any auto wiper control is switched off before turning the ignition on as this could blow the wiper control fuse if they are frozen to the screen n Be prepared for every eventuality by ensuring that your car is equipped with the following: demisting pad, torch (wind-up so you don’t run out of battery),

spare screenwash, de-icer, ice scraper, blanket, shovel, phone charger, map and a square of carpet that you can use to put under your drive wheels should you get stuck in the snow. n Remove snow from the top of your car. Otherwise breaking sharply could cause snow to fall onto the windscreen and hamper your vision or another driver’s

39

The following tips should always be followed when driving in the snow: n It’s important to accelerate gently, use low revs and change up to a higher gear as quickly as possible. You may need to move off in second gear as this will help reduce wheel slip

n You may need to leave as much as 10 times the normal recommended gap between you and the car in front n If you do encounter a skid, steer gently into it - for example, if the rear of the car is sliding to the right, steer to the right. Do not take your hands off the steering wheel or stamp your foot on the brakes n If the road has not been gritted, be wary of driving in the wheeltracks or other vehicles as

compressed snow is likely to be more icy than fresh snow n Controls such as the brakes, as well as the steering, accelerator and even gear changing should be operated smoothly and slowly n Sunglasses can help to reduce the glare of low winter sun on the snow n Keep your speed down and allow more time to stop and steer

Don’t Freeze This Winter Don’t freeze up this winter During spells of severely cold weather it is possible for water pipes in your home to freeze which may lead to a burst pipe when the thaw sets in. This can cause inconvenience and damage to your home and belongings. We outline some simple precautions to reduce the risk of frozen pipes or deal with situations where pipes burst.

Help to prevent your pipes from freezing n Keep your home as warm as possible, even when you are out, by setting the central heating to come on for short periods throughout the day. n Open the doors to the sink unit to allow warmer air to circulate round the pipes. n Allow warm air to circulate round the house by slightly opening doors to all rooms and minimising drafts from outside. n If you are away from home, ensure that the central heating comes on for regular short intervals and ask someone to check regularly for frozen pipes.

Dealing with frozen pipes n Turn the water supply off at the stopcock n Protect everything around the pipe that appears to be frozen to avoid damage if it bursts n Open the tap nearest to the part of the pipe you think is frozen so the water can flow through when it has thawed. n Thaw the ice in the pipe with a hot water bottle or hairdryer (taking care to keep it well away from any water), beginning from the tap end and working back towards the cold water tank. n Never use a heat gun or blow torch;

Find your stopcock The stopcock is used for turning off and on the cold water system in your home.It is important that you know where the stopcock is and that it is working. When you turn the stopcock in a clockwise direction the water supply will be shut off.

What should I do if I have no water? If your water supply fails, the problem may be a burst pipe in your home or there may be a leak in the mains system outside your home. If there is cold water at the cold tap in the kitchen then the mains supply is working.

If you have a burst pipe n Turn off the water by turning the stopcock clockwise ,this will stop any more water getting into the water pipes. If the burst pipe is on the main water system the rush of water will stop after a short while n Turn on all the cold taps and catch the water in the bath or sink to use for flushing the toilet later. n Block the escaping water with thick cloths like towels. n If the water has come into contact with electrical fittings the electricity should be turned off at the mains, if it is safe to do so. If water has come into contact with the Mains Box, do not attempt to touch and do not use any electrical equipment in the house. n Turn off your gas or oil heating systems; n Make sure that you have a number of a Plumber
