Adding value to your Home Go for a loft conversion The easiest way to get an extra bedroom and bathroom. The key thing is to make sure access to the loft is easy and that the conversion fits the rest of the house, rather than looking grafted on. You will have to strengthen the floor joists, which will raise the floor level, so make sure you leave yourself with sufficient ceiling height to stand up in.

Build a conservatory

flow by installing the same flooring throughout downstairs.

Change the windows Modern windows can not only save you money in heating costs but can add value to your property. Make sure that whatever you decide to do should suit the age and style of the original property.

Concentrate on the kitchen The kitchen has now become the showpiece area of the home. We don’t just cook in it, we do homework in it, we watch television in it and hold dinner parties there. The number one priority is creating a handsome and efficient work surface and ensuring easy access between three point - the sink, fridge and cooker (kitchen firms

Extending your living space is always a good idea, but the danger is that your conservatory ends up looking like something stuck on the back. Make sure the conservatory matches the rest of the house. You can enhance the feeling of space and

have got surprisingly good at drawing up designs). Install equipment that is as up to date as possible, so it won’t look outmoded in 10 years.

Do the bathroom next The secret for a bathroom is to keep things simple. You don’t need to do a lot with the room, it’s all about the features that you put in, such as a set of new taps, a heated chrome towel rail, a power shower, a glass screen instead of a shower curtain.

Bring the garden indoors Glass doors are a good idea, as is outdoor lighting. View the garden as another room; install decking. Pave over the front garden especially if parking is of a premium.

Get rid of the garage And turn it into living space. The fact is, 90 per cent of British garages don’t contain a car. They are a wasted asset.

Refurbish the front door Does it look smart? If not, buy a new doorknob (£35), brass letterbox (£25) or a stainless steel house number (£5-£25). Take a look at other people’s front doors you can get some great ideas that way.

The Remaining Glasshouse containing around two million bricks this is now a listed building.

Focus on Lemington Lemington, Bell’s Close and Sugley were adjacent villages which developed in the nineteenth century around the new industries which took advantage of the coal and clay deposits as well as the nearby water transport. In 1787 the Northumberland Glass Company erected four glasshouses on land by the River Tyne, leased from the Duke of Northumberland. Within ten years, four huge brick cones had been added to increase the variety of glass products from the factory. Initially only flat glass was produced from the four large glass cones. From 1833 to 1845 the Glassworks was operated by Joseph Lamb & Sons but shortly after this date there was a

depression in the glass trade and full scale operations were not reinstated until 1898 when George Sowerby, the famous glassmaker, took over. By 1837 all but the largest of the cones was demolished. In 1993 the only remaining cone was restored and conserved as a protected industrial monument being only one of four such surviving cones in the country. In 1797 the Tyne Iron Works was established in Lemington but in 1869

it was taken over by John Spencer & Sons and restarted as the Tyne Haematite Iron Company in 1871 using Spanish ore. The furnaces finally closed in 1886 and in 1903 the Newcastle & district Lighting Company erected a power station on the site. Lemington Staithes and Lemington Point were the termination of many coal wagonways including the Wylam and Wallbottle wagonways. The coal

In 1876 with the opening of the railways a ‘new’ Lemington developed ‘up the bank’ north of the railway line. In the same year the Tyne Commissioners cut a new channel in the river near Blaydon and the entrance to Lemington Loop was cut off and silted up. This area is now called ‘The Gut’. Continuous dredging was needed to keep the staithes

Holy Saviour Church was originally called Sugley Parish Church when it was built in 1837. It was designed by Benjamin Green and is unusual because it is oriented north-south, rather than east-west, to avoid an unused pit shaft underneath it. There were three churches in the area. 1838 a Weslyan Chapel was built by the Keelmen who ferried the stone form Heworth in Gateshead and in 1868 St. George’s Roman Catholic Church was built with an attached school, which is still in use.

Spring clean your Home De-cluttering tips

A good de-clutter does wonders for the soul - not only will the house look tidier but you’ll be able to enjoy a more relaxing, stress-free home that seems orderly and light when you look around. You don’t need to be exceptionally ruthless but it does help if you can detach yourself from things and be honest about what you are/aren’t using. The following tips will help you get started:If you’re the sentimental type that dislikes throwing things out, the best course of action is to get a big box and store things up in the loft, alternatively, find a cupboard/drawer/shelf for it that it can live happily on without invading any floor space. If items are broken set yourself a deadline to get them fixed, if you don’t meet it, throw them away or pass them on to somebody else.

Store toys in wicker baskets or storage boxes with lids. A lid means you can put everything away at the end of the night and enjoy a few toy-free hours before you head off to bed.

uplift your entire home and give you an immense feeling of satisfaction. The good news is you don›t need to spray the house with chemicals to keep it clean

Recycle any clothes you’ve outgrown and organise draws and wardrobes so you can find trousers, shirts, jumpers, underwear etc more easily. It also helps to have a designated school drawer to make getting ready for school that little bit easier.

Have a place for everything - keeping everything in a designated place is no mean feat, but boy is it worth it! Not only will you have no problem finding them next time but it will help prevent losing all those very easily lost things.

Buy a shoe rack and encourage the family to put their shoes there when they come home, not only will they be able to find them again in the morning but it will also prevent them hanging around in different rooms and being kicked under beds where you can’t find them.

Keep things organised - being well organised can make home life easier and less stressful.

Clean!

Giving your shelves, cupboards, walls and floors a jolly good clean can

Tackle one room at a time - start downstairs and stick to one room at a time. Tackling the whole house head on will leave you exhausted and you’re more likely to forget where you’ve put things. Take your time and don’t expect to get it all done in one day, it’s better to do it slowly

and thoroughly in order to do a good job. Get the entire family involved this isn’t a one man job - it’s important to involve the whole family as you go through each room. Tackling the house together will give a greater sense of satisfaction once you’re done and help children to understand the importance of living in a clean, organised home.

Recycling

Recycling is a wonderfully easy and earth-friendly way to get rid of unwanted items - not only will they be given a new lease of life in a brand new home but you’ll also be preventing them from going to landfill, earning you and your family one big green brownie point. There are various ways to recycle, including the following: Charity shops - local charity shops survive by selling on your unwanted items and are

an essential way to raise funds for UK and worldwide charity projects. All you need to do is bag up your clothes, shoes, toys and accessories and take them on down to the charity shop during opening hours. Some shops also take books, CD›s and kitchen crockery so if you want to add these items in, it›s worth checking to see if they accept them. Sell them online - providing the items you want to dispose of are in good condition, there is no reason why you can›t sell them. Online auction sites are a good bet as is the ever popular Car boot/garage sale- sales are a great way to get the kids involved; not only will it incentivise them to have a good clear out but it will help them earn a few pounds for their money box too. Check the local paper for up-coming boot sales or pick a sunny weekend to hold your own garage sale.

Spring Gardening Spring is a busy time in the garden and as always the weather can be so unpredictable from a heat wave to ground frosts, so its best to be prepared.

supports for herbaceous plants such as peonies, delphiniums and oriental poppies that would otherwise flop. Make your own using hazel or birch twigs for a natural look that will fade into the border as your plants grow.

Tender veg and bedding plants will need to be protected by cloches and fleece. Slugs and Snail will be out in force so make sure your new seedlings are protected.

Plant hardier summer bulbs and unsprouted dahlia tubers.

The fruit garden is one area where there is not a lot to do in April other than admire the blossom and ponder the harvest en route!

Sow hardy annuals such as nasturtium and calendula in drifts - clashing colours just don’t matter in a garden, but remember to plant taller plants behind shorter ones.

Plant strawberry plants in planters or hanging baskets for a pretty and delicious crop this summer.

Bulbs, flowers & containers Protect new spring shoots from frosts and slugs. Sprinkle general purpose fertiliser on beds and borders and erect

Carry on lifting and dividing overgrown clumps of perennials and split polyanthus plants once they have finished flowering.

Sow sweet peas outdoors (soak the seeds overnight to improve germination) and plant out those raised under cover.

Feed your pots and containers and brighten them up with cheery primroses, violas, pots of spring bulbs and spring heathers. Packing them densely in single colours makes for a stunning display - or try combinations like cream and regal purple for a striking impact.

Fruit

Protect fruit trees and gooseberries with netting; birds love developing fruit buds and your entire crop can disappear with astonishing speed unless protected!

Check your rhubarb; harvest it if it has grown, or if it is still in its infancy, keep the forcer on. To encourage faster growth, cover the forcer with horse manure; the heat will produce even more dramatic results as it rots down.

Vegetables The centres are now full of plantlets of vegetables, salads and herbs. For those that find growing from seed daunting, this is the ideal solution! Remember many need hardening off so be wary about planting them straight outside. Many vegetable crops can be sown as seed this month - check the instructions on the packet and plant away! Broad beans, carrots, lettuces, spinach, salad leaves, leeks and chard are just a few ideas to get your healthy, cheap and home-grown food underway! Traditionalists plant potatoes on Good Friday - plant first and second earlies first, main crop by the middle

of the month. Plant shallots, garlic and onion sets as well as asparagus crowns in welldrained soil. If you have a frost-free greenhouse,

Healthy Habits You know that healthy habits make sense, but did you ever stop to think why you practice them? Research shows that the impact of good health on your quality of life is far-reaching, regardless of your age, sex, or physical ability. Check out these five qualities that good health promotes. Controls Weight Eating right and exercising regularly can help you avoid excess weight gain and maintain a healthy weight. You can obtain benefits of exercise by being active in simple ways throughout the day. For example, walk instead of driving vehicle or take the stairs instead of the elevator. Eating a low-fat diet can also help control weight. When you start the day with a healthy breakfast, you help avoid hunger spasms that could send you running to the fast food before lunch. We all know that incorporating or five a day of fruits and vegetables-which are low in calories and high in nutrients--in to your diet to help with weight control.

Improves Mood Doing right by your body pays off for your mind as well. Eating a healthy diet as well as exercising can lead to a better physique, so you may also feel better about your appearance, which can boost your confidence and selfesteem. Short-term results of exercise include decreased stress and ability to think better. It’s not just diet and exercise that lead to improved mood, another healthy habit that leads to better mental health is making social connections. Whether it’s volunteering, joining

a club, or attending a movie, communal activities help improve mood and mental functioning by keeping the mind active and serotonin levels balanced.

Combats Diseases Healthy habits can help prevent certain health conditions--such as heart disease, stroke, and high blood pressure--by boosting high-density lipoprotein (HDL), or “good,” cholesterol and decreasing unhealthy triglycerides. This combination keeps your blood flowing smoothly, decreasing your risk of cardiovascular diseases. Regular physical activity and proper diet can help you prevent or manage a wide range of other health problems, including metabolic syndrome, diabetes, depression, certain types of cancer, and arthritis.

Boosts Energy We’ve all experienced the energy drop that comes from eating foods high in sugar and saturated fats. When you eat a balanced diet including whole grains, lean meats, low-fat dairy products, and fruits and vegetables, your body has the fuel that it needs to manage your energy level. Regular physical exercise also improves muscle strength and boosts endurance, giving you more energy. Exercise helps deliver oxygen and

nutrients to your tissues and gets your cardiovascular system working more efficiently so that you have more energy to go about your daily activities. It also helps boost energy by promoting better sleep--helping you fall asleep faster and deepening your sleep.

Improves Longevity When you practice healthy habits, you boost your chances of a longer life. By just walking just 30 minutes each day significantly reduced their chances of dying prematurely, compared with those who exercised infrequently. Looking forward to more time with loved ones is reason enough to keep walking.

Peanut Butter Banana Ice Cream This is a yummy recipe that is ‘lowish’ in calories (about 300 calories per serving) serves 4. Its also extremely easy to make, with a base of frozen banana Peanut Butter and Seasoning, it makes a tasty treat!

Ingredients n 3 large, ripe bananas n 3 tablespoons natural peanut butter n ¼ teaspoon vanilla extract n a super teeny-tiny dash of cinnamon n sea salt to taste n roasted peanuts for topping

Instructions Cut the bananas into small chunks and freeze until solid, at least 1-2 hours. Transfer the bananas to a very strong blender and blend until smooth and creamy. This will take a few minutes and may require periodic pauses and adjustments. It’s very loud and intense since the bananas are frozen, similar to adding ice cubes to a blender. Within a few minutes, you should be seeing a thick, creamy icecreamy mixture in the blender. Add the peanut butter, vanilla extract, cinnamon, sea salt, and anything else

you might like in there (chocolate chips are good). Pulse the blender quickly to stir the ingredients, when everything is mixed, serve immediately. Top with additional peanut butter and crushed roasted peanuts.

Notes You can put this back in the freezer to eat part of it later, but the consistency loses some of its wonderful velvetyness when you re-freeze it, so just eat the whole thing now. I command it. If you absolutely must exercise self control and save the rest for later, running it through the blender again before serving might help.

Motorists Can Save Fuel and Money ... and the environment by making small changes to their driving, the Institute of Advanced Motorists says. The Safety Charity’s Chief Examiner, Peter Rodger, argues that: “There are many simple ways to improve” fuel economy and that “everyone is capable of achieving them”. Even reducing consumption by a modest (say) 5% could equate to significant savings over time.

Tips To Save Fuel Here are a series of easy to follow tips that help motorists drive efficiently. They relate to reading the road, speed, using the transmission, parking techniques, when to switch off the engine, minimising the vehicle’s mass and fuel types.

“Use alternative green fuels that contribute to the reduction in CO2 emissions if possible. Remember never fill the tank right up as this also reduces fuel efficiency.

If it is safe to do so, switch off your engine when you are stuck in a long queue. However, ensure that you remain alert and prepare for traffic to resume.

Extending your planning and observational skills will help you approach hazards - including roundabouts and junctions - a lot more smoothly without having to brake sharply and accelerate too often. The earlier you plan ahead, the sooner you can prepare to slow down if you need to.

Where possible, reverse into a parking bay so when you drive off again you can do so easily. It’s far more efficient and improves visibility.

Making sure you keep to the speed limit not only ensures you avoid the risk of incurring a fine, but also ensures you reduce fuel consumption by up to 25%. If you drive a manual car use block gear changes on deceleration. For example, go straight into second gear from fifth gear if possible and appropriate – this will save a lot more fuel.

Heavy items in your car boot or a roof rack can also increase drag and therefore lower fuel economy – avoid weighing your car down with items you’ll never need. Ask yourself if you really need to drive, especially on short journeys where you can walk or cycle. Avoid short journeys as your engine stays cold when you drive less than two miles and your car will produce 60 per cent more pollution than a warm engine.
