n Stir in the flour until the mixture comes together as a dough.
n Roll the dough out on a lightly floured work surface to a thickness of 1cm/½in.
n Using biscuit cutters or a glass, cut biscuits out of the dough and carefully place onto the baking
tray. To make into Christmas tree decorations, carefully make a hole in the top of the biscuit using a straw.
n Bake the biscuits for 8-10 minutes, or until pale goldenbrown. Set aside to harden for 5 minutes, then cool on a wire rack.
n For the icing, sift the icing sugar into a large mixing bowl and stir in enough water to create a smooth mixture. Stir in the food colouring.
n Carefully spread the icing onto the biscuits using a knife and sprinkle over the glitter. Set aside until the icing hardens.

The Do’s and Dont’s Of The Office Christmas Party Here are some fantastic venues for your Christmas Party - after you have booked yours, and before you go we are going to give you some of the Do’s and Dont’s that we all have seen or done before. Do… Make the most of the canapés! Champagne and canapé receptions are great for getting you warmed up for your Christmas partying, but sip it slowly and keep your stomach lined as it’s just the beginning of your party and there’s plenty more to come. Keep your conversation light and make small talk. Ask about your colleague’s family and their upcoming plans for Christmas and New Year. Avoid that colleague who you have fancied all year and haven’t had the guts to tell them all year - it will end in tears Remember you’re there as a reward for a year of hard work, it’s still a party so relax, smile and enjoy yourself!
CB 3.indd 20
Don’t… Post embarrassing photos of colleagues to Facebook or Twitter. It can only end in tears when they realise an embarrassing photo is out there to like and comment on! Don’t corner your Boss for an hour to give them a summary of ALL the great work you’ve done this year! You and them are there to mingle with everyone and enjoy themselves too. Definitely don’t tell that boss or colleague what you really think of them and how you would do their job better.
Don’t feel sorry for the office creep and snog them under the mistletoe - as per the aforementioned Facebook and Twitter your colleagues will have that photo to post and remind you about just before every future Christmas party. Finally, DON’T demand a pay rise, hand in your notice, phone in sick or turn up late the morning after! Take it from us, we have seen enough Christmas Parties to know how to make the most of them. The main thing to remember is that you’re there to have fun!
Leave too early, the fun and surprises never end at a Christmas party so don’t risk missing out on anything.

Rocking out at The Marquis Local Business Man David Bennison, has realised a dream that most men have but don’t get to do. He has taken over his local pub and is transforming it with knowledge gleamed from his favourite experiences when travelling the world. David spent around 14 years of his career travelling the world and exporting products manufacture in the North East. On David’s travels he was fortunate enough to experience many different styles of food, flavours, and appearances. “When I was travelling overseas, I used to miss the cosy ambience of the Marquis of Granby and the company of my fellow Geordies as opposed to pretentious restaurants full of false people.” As David has other business interests, he will not be working in the bar so he was brought back Peter Thompson who was the previous Manager and ran the pub successfully for a number of years. David said that “Peter always had a smile on his face and his humour
was very dry, he’s a nice down to earth bloke who takes great pride in the quality and presentation of all the drinks”
fish themselves so they can cook it exactly to their liking.
Having been recently refurbished by Star Pubs and Bars (formerly S&N Pubs) David is now putting his own stamp on the family pub and restaurant, which is on the A692 between Lobley Hill and Sunniside.
“I first tried a steak cooked on a rock in Seoul Korea and thought it was really special, I’ve always wanted a restaurant where I could offer it. Probably more associated with restaurants offering fine dining however I thought why not offer this at the Marquis. I don’t need to charge silly prices and it’s a fun way of dining. Having said that any customers who would like steaks cooked for them, we will be happy to oblige”. Another feature of the menu is freshly made pizzas where the customers can seen them being made, they will be New York’s style with any toppings, there will also be pizza rings with a choice of pasta or salad in the middle. There are still the old favourites available with a 2 course lunch offer and the traditional Sunday roast.
David has created his own brand of food called Hot Rock Grill, the new menu will have a variety of well-presented dishes but as the name suggests some of the dishes are served on a hot rock where the customer cooks either steak or
The bar will be a focus as well as many customers just like to have relaxing drink, with no airs or graces, just excellent ingredients, & service. They are on the main road & hope that locals and passers by will start to drop in.
For the Restaurant David has brought in a head chef, Gabriel Bejenaru. David met Gabriel by chance one night whilst dining out and immediately loved his passion for food. David said “Gabriel loves what he does and is very creative. I was so impressed with him I instantly offered him the job of heading up the food side of the Marquis and after a couple of meetings he thankfully agree to join the team”.

The foolproof guide to cooking turkey Even confident cooks worry about getting the turkey roasted just right – no need with this advice from the delicious. test kitchen
n The easiest way to ensure the turkey is cooked is to use a digital meat thermometer, available from cook shops, Ebay or amazon.co.uk. Stick the thermometer into the thickest parts of the breast and leg. If it reads 70°C or over for 2 minutes, the turkey is done.
n Don’t worry if your turkey is cooked long before you’re planning to serve Christmas lunch – it will sit happily (and stay warm) for up to 2 hours, resting on a serving plate loosely covered with foil. In fact, it will taste all the better for this interlude.
n Take the turkey out of the fridge an hour or two before you plan to cook. It will cook more evenly from room temperature.
A more intuitive way to check is to stick a skewer into the thickest parts of the breast and leg. If the juices run clear with no traces of pink, it’s ready. For cooking an important meal, though, a meat thermometer really is best.
n For ease of cooking and fantastic flavour, choose a quality, fresh, free-range turkey. Most Turkeys that are purchase come with full cooking instructions.
n The cooking time depends on the size and type of bird. For a fresh, 5kg free-range bird for 6-8 people, plan on 2-2½ hours.

Top 10 Tips for a Debt Free Xmas We are now well into the festive season and although it can be a time for giving, it’s all too easy to overspend, as there are many tempting offers and pressures to buy! Planning, budgeting and organisation is key to avoid getting into debt at Christmas and beyond, if your spending becomes out of control it can become a problem not only for Christmas but also after.
Plan early for Christmas Be realistic and budget, work out how much you are going to spend
on each person and stick to it. Manage expectations as to what you or Santa can give.
Don’t forget every day bills
Keep things simple If you can afford to pay for goods outright, don’t be persuaded to take out extended credit agreements.
Shop around
Your rent/mortgage, utility bills, food bills and other existing debts still have to be paid and the consequences can be severe if they’re not.
Try as many different places as possible to find the best price. Buy what you want and not what other people say you need.
Don’t bank on an overdraft If you do need more money, don’t just run up an overdraft without talking to your bank first- it will work out much more expensive

Buy safe to be safe
Start to plan for Next Year
Whatever the deal, whatever the temptation, don’t buy from unauthorised traders and don’t borrow from unauthorised lenders.
Once Christmas is over, it’s worth looking at what you did well and what you didn’t. Learn from your mistakes and start planning how you will do things differently next year.
Read the small print Check for hidden extras in any credit agreement. Work out the total amount payable. Ensure that the monthly instalments are within your budget before signing
Do your own credit checks If you are going to use a credit card, shop around and compare terms.
Be organised There’s a lot to remember at Christmas. If you’ve borrowed money don’t forget that it won’t be long before you have to make a payment. Make sure you pay on time, even if it is only the minimum, or you will be faced with additional charges.

Jolly holly napkins It’s so rewarding to create a table setting from items gathered from the garden. Spray a few rosemary sprigs and twigs with white paint, tuck in some bright berries (hypericum or deciduous holly), then tie with string.
Peek-a-boo centrepiece If you’re creating a tall table decoration, it’s important not to block the view of facing guests. Fill a few vases put white sand or salt crystals in the bottom and fill with fir cone leaves berries and holly.
Hang ‘em high Here’s a trick if your table is narrow and you need to save space for platters of food: buy a tall champagne or wine glass put it on a round mirror and fill it with coloured baubles that match your colour scheme then put small fairy lights around the edge for a stunning look
Short and sweet For smaller tables, simplicity rules: Use a lager/pilsner glass filled with colour water and flowers for a beautiful simplistic look To advertise in Community Buzz email enquiries@thecommunitybuzz.co.uk or call 0191 267 1434

Jobs To Do In The Greenhouse Remove last remaining spent crops and clean and disinfect the greenhouse. Insulation will be needed to help keep the greenhouse frost free when using a greenhouse heater. Regularly inspect plants for pest and disease. Don’t forget ventilation may be required in the warm autumn days. Maintain air movement in the greenhouse and conservatory even in the cold to prevent the build up of fungal disease.
Remove faded flowers, yellowing leaves and dead leaves to stop the development of disease within the greenhouse.

RETURN RETURN TO TO THE THE CLASSICS CLASSICS
Don’t get caught out this winter By carrying out a few simple checks before the cold weather really sets in could prevent you having to spend hours in the freezing cold or worse. From checking your oil to packing a torch, here are some top tips to ensure you don’t grind to a halt in the cold this year.
Preparing your car
handbook or get a local garage to check the strength. Screenwash – windscreen washer fluid and anti-freeze are more crucial during the winter, so ensure that this is well topped-up before the cold weather arrives. Use a screenwash that protects down to at least -10C. Oil – As at any time of year, checking your oil level regularly is an easy way to reduce your risk of engine problems. This is the single most important vehicle maintenance check that you can do.
Car Battery – cold weather, coupled with increased use of lights, wipers and heating, can wear down your car’s battery during the winter. If your battery is over four years old it could begin to become temperamental so get it checked
Wiper blades – check that your windscreen wiper blades are up to the task of dealing with heavy rain or snow before setting off on your journey. Replacing them is cheap and simple and could prove vital in getting you to your destination during poor conditions.
Coolant – ensure that coolant is between the minimum and maximum markers. It is also important that there is sufficient anti-freeze in the coolant. If you’re uncertain, have a look at your
Tyres – fitting winter tyres to your car will make it much betterequipped to cope with hazardous driving conditions. However, even if you stick with your regular tyres,
you must make sure they’re up to scratch, check the pressure of each tyre regularly and also ensure there is adequate tread depth. And don’t forget to check the spare as well.
Packing your car We all know that even the best-laid plans can sometimes go awry, So it’s best to be prepared for every eventuality by ensuring that your car is equipped with the following in case you run into any trouble during the winter months: De-misting pad Torch (ideally wind-up so you never run out of battery)

If you are lucky enough to own a Jaguar V8, be it an XJ8 or XK8, or if you are thinking of buying one, the one thing a secondhand buyer should realise is that, like a cam belt on normal cars, with age, timing chains will need replacing at 65,000. Hopefully these have been done and receipts and service history will show this. If not, hopefully this was reflected in the purchase price, as it is costly, but will prevent fatal engine damage which is more costly and sometimes results in scrapping the vehicle! Once done, the engine is good for

60-70 - a lifetime for some people. On early models, tensioners were plastic and cooling towers the same, and water pumps commonly failed. Such common problems on these models normally caused extreme damage to the engine. Some give a warning rattle, some don`t some just break. So even if it is low mileage, it is probably best to check, given some of these cars are 18 years old. It is better to be safe than sorry. For advice on all aspects of jaguars, contact me.

Memories of Throckley Throckley is a village, located approximately 8 miles west of Newcastle upon Tyne. Hadrian’s Wall passes through the village, its course traced by the village’s main road, Hexham Road. The Radcliffes, Earls of Derwentwater, are recorded as being the owners of Throckley until about 1750 when estates were vested in trustess of Greenwich hospital and later transferred to the Lord of the Admiralty
CB 3.indd 36
Throckley has always been a coal mining village, coal having been worked through the shallow workings or bell pits for centuries. In 1867 the Throckley Coal Company was formed, much deeper mining was begun. Coal was raised from the
Isabella Colliery in 1869, a further shaft, the Derwentwater, being sunk nearby in 1878. The Maria Colliery which was a shallow mine was developed as a deep mine in about 1906, The Throckley Retort Brick and Clay Company, owned by the

Stephenson family, was bought out by the Throckley Coal company in 1905. The Bricks from the newly formed brickworks were packed into trucks and transported to Lemington point via the colliery ‘Wagonway’. Attached to the back of the trucks was a ‘Dandy Car’ a truck designed to allow a horse to ride on it down to the staiths then to pull the empty trucks back to the Brickyard.
1.
The Social life of the village improved in 1908 with the introduction of a working men’s club in a house in Stephenson Terrace, owned by George Curwen a garage proprietor, who also owned the land on which it was built, this allowed him to bypass the coal company policy which forbade public houses in the village A Co-operative Store was established in 1887 and around 1914 the tramway system was extended from the City to Throckley Road Ends. The first Picture Palace in the village stood on an area behind Field Terrace, which is now a car park next to Sainsburys.
2.
The History of Throckley would not be complete without reference to George Stepehnson. At eight years of age he came with his parents to live at Dewley Burn. He was employed by Gracie Ainslie of Dewley Farm at 2d a day to herd cows, ensuring that they did not stray onto the colliery wagonway

10 tips to keep your home warm Here are our top ten tips that’ll keep you warm and protect your home from the jaws of winter.
7. Tree trimming
1. Keep your pipes toasty
8. No entry for draughts
Burst pipes are common during winter due to rapid freezing and thawing, potentially causing massive damage. Make sure that your pipes all have a foam lagging on them, which will reduce the heat lost and insulate the pipes to stop them from freezing.
Those chilly winter breezes are wily things, and they’ll try everything they can to slip through the nooks and crannies of your home. Check the edges of your doors and windows for draughts, and seal these gaps with selfadhesive draught strips.
2. Get your boiler looked at
9. Sort out your home insurance
A poorly maintained boiler wastes more energy and costs more, So make sure that you get your boiler serviced before winter.
Check to make sure that your home insurance policy is up to scratch and that you’re covered for winter-related damage. If it comes to sorting out water damage to your Christmas presents or fixing a leaky roof, you’ll be glad you had the right cover in place.
3. Insulation - more than just a woolly jumper About a quarter of the heat in your house is lost through the roof, so having good loft and wall cavity insulation could keep the house warm with less energy used
4. Bleed the radiators If your radiators are colder at the top than they are at the bottom, then you need to bleed your radiators, so grab a towel and your special key and bleed that radiator!
5. Switch energy suppliers If your bills are still high despite these improvements, give your energy supplier a call and see if you can be put onto a more appropriate energy tariff. If that’s not good enough you can look for a supplier that’ll offer you a bigger discount.
6. Guttering With the onset of Autumn the leaves will start falling and gutters and drainpipes will start to get filled with loose foliage. Blocked gutters can cause water to build up and run into your roof and down your walls, get them cleaned out ready for winter.
CB 3.indd 42
You know who’s to blame for your guttering getting clogged up with leaves? It’s those trees, so take a stand and get them trimmed away from the house.
10. Bonus tip Stock up on hot chocolate. It doesn’t matter if it’s pouring down with freezing cold rain, in the middle of a blizzard or gale force winds, sitting down on the sofa with a mug of hot chocolate in winter is one of the best feelings ever.

A Dog is for Life not Just for Christmas Annie is beautiful 2 year old Akita Crossbreed. She entered RSPCA care in June 2014 due to concerns for her welfare. Annie was living with her six siblings and her owner was unable to meet all of their welfare needs. Annie is a friendly girl who can be a little nervous when she first meets new people but once she knows you she is playful and sweet natured. She loves human attention is an affectionate girl who loves to give cuddles and kisses. Annie has had no basic training and so will need to attend obedience classes with her new owner. She gets on well with the other dogs here at the centre but has been quite under socialised and so is quite puppy like in alot of her behaviour in general. Annie is looking for a home with children over 10 years of age and preferably with adopters who have experience with Akitas or similar breeds.
Sasha is a delightful 8 year old female Rottweiler. She entered RSPCA care in August 2014 after being abandoned in a property. Poor Sasha was emaciated when she was found and had untreated flea allergic dermatitis which had left her almost completely bald.
