Blaydon Through the Years The town of Blaydon is essentially an industrial area and is not more than two centuries old. Indeed in the 1760’s there was little here but a few farms and a cottage or two. In the latter part of the same century a smelting works was set up and from that time the industrial growth of the area was assured. Modern Blaydon stands hard by the Tyne with the main Gateshead to Hexham road. Between this main road and the river is the railway and, beyond it, in a bend of the Tyne is the industrial district of Blaydon Haughs. The main part of the town lies south of the railway and here, around Wesley Place, Tyne Street and Shibdon Road are the shopping districts, the town’s entertainments and several places of worship. Proposals have been formulated for the revitalisation of the town of
Blaydon by bringing up to present day standards the main roads which go through the town. namely, the A.695 and the A.6081. The existing shopping centre is being replaced by a completely new town centre incorporating modern shops and business premises which will prove an attraction, not only for the residents of the town, but also for the residents of a wide surrounding area. In the nearby Blaydon cemetery is the grave and a statue of one of the greatest reformers in Blaydon’s
annals. He was Tommy Ramsey who was one of the founders of the Durham Miners’ Association. He died in 1873. His statue shows him with a roll of handbills and the rattle which he used to call miners to his meetings. The inscription below pays tribute to his long and self sacrificing labours for the lot of the miners. A pleasant feature of Blaydon are the Shibdon Pleasure Grounds which spread over an eminence behind the town looking out towards the Tyne Valley. Here are flower beds and

smooth lawns whilst bowling greens, tennis courts and children’s play area are provided. To the east, and forming the urban district boundary, is the Derwent, a river which joins the Tyne at Derwenthaugh, a low lying area with coal staiths and jetties on the riverside. A mile inland and not far from Blaydon is Axwell Park, once the home of the Clavering family. Sir Thomas Clavering, the 7th baronet, built Axwell Hall, a mansion designed by James Payne. The Claverings were Stuart supporters in the Civil War but at the Jacobite Rebellions of 1715 and 1745 they upheld the House of Hanover. In fact, the family kept watch on their neighbour Lord Widdrington at Stella Hall and informed the Government of his preparations for the rebellions. The last (10th) baronet died in 1893
and Axwell Hall is now in use as an approved school. Much of the park has been developed for residential purposes, and the Axwell Park Estate, as it is known, is one of the most pleasant residential areas on Tyneside. However the reed-edged lake and much woodland survives of the fringe on the River Derwent Lastly, it would not be right to finish
this note with- out mention of Blaydon’s song Blaydon Races or the anthem of Tyneside as it is known. It was written by Geordie Ridley, a Tyneside music hall singer. in 1862. two years before his death. Most of the places mentioned in the song have, of course, long since gone including the racecourse which is now part of the site of Stella South Power Station.

Kid’s Healthy Eating Do 8 Enjoy their food – Getting children involved in shopping and cooking and making mealtimes fun can develop their interest in food and healthy eating. 8 Eat a balanced diet consisting of a mixture of different foods – foods contain different nutrients so children eating a varied diet are more likely to be getting all the nutrients they need. 8 Eat plenty of starchy foods – such as breads, cereals, pasta, rice, potatoes, couscous and plantains. These should be the main sources of energy for children making up about a third of their diet. 8 Eat plenty of fruit and vegetables – five or more servings a day are recommended for good health, raw,
fresh, dried, canned and frozen all count. 8 Eat moderate amounts of meat, fish and alternatives such as beans, lentils, nuts or soya products – provide at least one portion with each meal. 8 Eat moderate amounts of milk and dairy products – lower fat versions (e.g. of cheese, milk and yogurt) contain as much calcium and are often a good choice.
Don’t 8 Not eat too many foods that contain a lot of fat – such as fried foods, pastries, pies, crisps, biscuits, chocolate, butter and other spreads, oil and mayonnaise. Look for
lower fat options and opt for baking or grilling rather than frying. 8 Not eat snacks or drinks that contain a lot of sugar too often – as this can damage teeth and may fill children up so they are not hungry at mealtimes. 8 Cut back on salt – there is no need to add salt to children’s food.

How To look After Your Hair This Summer Keep Conditioning
Just as your body needs water to survive, your hair must replenish its moisture to stay healthy. “Conditioner for hair is like water for the body: You’re always going to need it. To rehydrate without wetting, spritz a dry conditioner on thirsty ends every two days. Use a conditioner with essential oils which will add goodness back in. Give your hair a break from blowouts and embrace summer’s casual braids, ponytails, and buns. Even an undone style will still look chic if hair appears shiny and healthy, we recommend substituting your styling
cream with a conditioner to smooth hair and hydrate.
Lower The Heat
The summertime is ideal for air-drying hair to reveal its natural texture, but if you must blowdry, make sure you’re using a nozzle. If you don’t use a nozzle, there’s no protection—the metal mechanism is right next to your hair. Blowdry the hair on your arm. If it’s burning your skin, it’ll burn your hair.”
Get Better Bedhead
Knots can lead to splitting and breakage, which may explain why your hair seems to stop growing
at a certain point. To avoid tangles and help each strand reach its full potential tie up your hair before bed: “Flop your hair forward and gather it as though it’s a pineapple on top of your head. When we sleep, we roll around so much, but a nighttime up do puts your hair to rest.”
Seal Your Color
Heat and sun oxidize hair color, making it look dry and fried. To seal in color and hydration we recommend a keratin treatments. “They build a protein shield that makes hair easier to style—it’s less fluffy, frizzy, and vulnerable to heat and oxidation.”

Corbridge & Hexham at a Glance Corbridge
As far back as 1827 Corbridge was rated as a shopper’s paradise, a reputation it retains today. A wander along Corbridge’s pretty high street with its plethora of small shops with their decorated fronts will tempt you to linger longer. Once a garrison town for Roman soldiers and a safe crossing place over the Tyne, houses here are built with stone hewn from the Roman town of Corstopitum, where today’s Corbridge grew from. View the remains of this ancient Roman Site on the outskirts of the village.

Hexham
Once the haunt of marauding Vikings 1300 years ago, nowadays Hexham proudly holds the title of England’s favourite market town – as voted by Country Life magazine The town centre here is filled with winding streets with Hexham Abbey, the keystone of Hexham’s assets, at its hub. This flourishing place of worship was founded by the Northumbrian saint and bishop Wilfrid in 674.

Hexham Farmers One of the easiest ways of finding a wide range of locally produced foods is a visit to Hexham Farmers’ Market in the very heart of the town. The farmers’ market takes place in the historic Market Place every second and fourth Saturday of the month, starting at 9am and finishing at 2pm. You can get a wide range of every day foods at Hexham Farmers’ Market, all produced within 50 miles of the town and with many of the ingredients of products also locally produced. For instance, if you buy meat from one of the farmers at the market, the animals will have grazed fields in the area and plums used for making plum jam will have been grown locally. All producers pride themselves in what they do and aim to give you the highest quality. They
are always happy to talk to you about their products and the way they make them. Getting regular shopping at Hexham Farmers’ Market doesn’t have to be expensive either. A couple of years ago the market organisers challenged a local cook to produce a two course meal for four people for just £10 and he managed to do so, not just once but twice! The farmers’ market focuses on seasonal foods too, so you won’t find soft fruits for sale in winter, and as a result the products do change with seasons. You can find out more about Hexham Farmers’ Market from the website
www.hexhamfarmersmarket.co.uk, and you can keep in touch by liking the market on Facebook or following it on Twitter.

Gardening jobs for July Get a bumper vegetable Feed your lawn For many of us the lawn is the harvest centrepiece to the garden that sets off Now’s the time to reap of lot of what you’ve sown, but remember there’s still time to plant extra crops. 8 Catch veg while it’s at its peak and harvest it regularly rather than leaving it to go woody or bittertasting. 8 Limit tomato growth by pinching out the growing tip of your cordon tomato plant when it reaches the roof of the greenhouse. Pinch out the side-shoots as they develop. 8 Veg to sow outdoors in July include beetroot, carrots, dwarf French beans, lettuce, radishes and runner beans.
everything else. 8 As long as there is no drought, it’s worth feeding the lawn regularly. 8 During dry weather, raise the blades on your lawn mower to allow the grass to grow a little bit longer. This will keep it greener and help it retain moisture.
Encourage late-summer flowers
8 Give them a boost after pruning with a good soak of water and some tomato feed. 8 Exploit plants’ desperate need to set seed by removing blooms as they fade. This will encourage them to produce more flowers to replace them. 8 Remember that plants in containers are dependent on you for their water as they’ll get little benefit from any rain. Give them a good soak at least once a day in sunny weather.
8 Cut back early-flowering perennials to the ground and they will send up fresh leaves and maybe even the bonus of some extra late-summer flowers.

Gardening jobs for August Towards the end of the month, even containers which had slow-release fertiliser added to the compost at planting time will start to run out of steam, so begin feeding once a week with a tomato food.
Raise mower blades in dry spells 8 During dry weather, raise the blades on your lawnmower to allow the grass to grow a little bit longer. This will keep it greener and help retain moisture. 8 Don’t panic if your grass does turn brown as it will soon green up again when the rain eventually returns.
Trim hedges 8 Midsummer is when most of us tackle our hedges as the new growth begins to make them look untidy. If you’re using a hedge trimmer, start at the bottom of each side and work upwards in smooth, continuous swathes. Cut the top last.
Cut back strawberries 8 If you don’t want to create new strawberry plants using runners, it’s a good idea to cut back plants after they finish fruiting or they’ll spread very quickly.
leaves will soon appear, so don’t worry if your plants look a bit bare after you prune them.
Harvest veg 8 Catch veg while it’s at its peak and harvest it regularly rather than leaving it to go woody or bitter-tasting. 8 You can still sow veg, such as: spring cabbages, beetroot, lettuce, oriental greens, spring onions and salad leaves.
8 Remove any straw mulch and take out any weeds. New strawberry

Choosing the Right Gym 1.Location, Location
If you choose a gym on the other side of town, will you really make it there consistently to work out? Often, a gym located somewhere between your home and office (or school) is best.
2. Hours
Is the gym open when you’ll use it most? While some gyms are open 24 hours a day, others are closed on weekends
3. Members
Everyone responds differently to those around them, and you should keep this in mind before you choose a gym. You should feel relaxed in your exercise enivironment, not embarrassed or intimidated.
4. Staff
The staff members of the gym should be supportive and courteous, they are there to help you make the most of your workouts. Before selecting a gym, ask about the certifications of the staff members. Are they qualified to guide you through your fitness routine?
5. Cleanliness
This may or may not be obvious on your first trip to the gym, so keep your eyes peeled. Make sure that towels are available to wipe off the equipment after each use. Also, look to see if staff members enforce this standard of hygiene. Look at the toilets, sinks, and showers themselves to see that they’re properly maintained.
6. Equipment
Take a good look around. Are there enough of the “popular” machines to go around, or do members have to wait in line to use them Make sure that there are a wide variety of machines, but don’t be intimidated by new ones. Notice whether or not instructions and pictures are posted on the machines, or if staff is available to help you.
7. Classes
Ask to see the schedule of fitness classes offered at the gym. Make sure that the classes you WANT to take are offered at the times you can attend, and find out if you need to show up early to reserve a spot. If group classes are the staple of your exercise

program, find out if the gym charges extra for classes before you join.
8. Fees
Cost is probably the deciding factor when choosing a gym. Many gyms have a sign-up fee, but these are often waived during certain promotions. Take a look at the payment schedule. Do you pay each month, or do you have to commit yourself to an entire year as a member? Can you cancel without penalty? And ultimately, does a gym fit into your budget? When it comes down to joining a Gym, you may feel like you’re signing your life away—if you aren’t informed and prepared. Be picky! Shop around, talk to friends, and take the tours until you find a place that meets all (or most) of your expectations at a reasonable price. After all, finding the right gym can be the key to a healthy lifestyle.

BODY WORLDS Vital - The Exhibition of Real Human Bodies 17 May - 2 Nov Life Science Centre, Times Square, Newcastle Upon Tyne NE1 4EP 0191 2438210 For the first time in the UK: BODY WORLDS Vital - at the Life Science Centre, Newcastle-upon-Tyne. BODY WORLDS Vital, an aweinspiring journey through the human body, celebrating its complexity, beauty and potential, makes its UK debut at the Life Science Centre, Newcastle, in May 2014.
Mariner 9 10 May - 7 Sept Laing Art Gallery, New Bridge Street, Newcastle Upon Tyne NE1 8AG 0191 2327734 Mariner 9 is internationally acclaimed artist Kelly Richardson’s breathtaking video art installation. The work is a spectacular twelve metre-long panorama of Mars set hundreds of years in the future, battered by dust storms and littered with the debris of our missions to unlock the secrets of the Red Planet. Taking NASA’s own imagery and technical data of the Martian landscape, and using Terragen, a complex scenery generation software used by the film and gaming industries, Kelly has created an uber-realistic red planet, minutely replicating its distinctive geology, weather patterns and soundscape to make a mindblowing, incredibly immersive experience that you won’t want to miss. Mariner 9 was commissioned by Tyneside Cinema, supported using public funding by Arts Council England. The exhibition is supported by Art AV.
Over 38 million people have experienced BODY WORLDS in over 90 cities world-wide including Tokyo, New York, Los Angeles and Mexico City- now here’s YOUR chance to see it in Newcastle. BODY WORLDS Vital brings together a collection of real human bodies, specimens, organs and body slices which have been willed by donors and preserved through plastination, a ground-breaking method for specimen preservation invented by Dr. Gunther von Hagens. This is a rare opportunity to experience a truly unique exhibition that helps us to understand the wonder, sophistication and fragility of our own bodies.

MISHKA & SKI
JENNI, TUCKA, NIPPER
OZZI
Give a Pet a Home Mishka (right) and Ski (left) are two gorgeous golden oldies. Mishka is 12 years old and Ski is 10 years and they are mother and daughter. They entered RSPCA care in March 2014 as part of a cruelty investigation. They had been left at an allotment and were in an emaciated condition when found. The girls have recently been made available for rehoming and have been moved to Newcastle Branch. They are very closely bonded to each other and it is essential that they find a home together. They are looking for owners who have experience of owning Huskies or other similar breeds. They are both very sweet natured dogs and love human company. Mishka is the more laid back of the two, the brains behind everything! whereas Ski is more outgoing and loves to have lots of cuddles, she is also the more vocal and enjoys singing in her spare time. Both girls can be strong on the lead at times but generally walk
very well together. They have both had basic training and can do most commands. Both are very good at ’paw’ and Mishka can even wave too. These lovely girls are desperate to find a home soon where they can spend their retirement years. Despite their age they are full of life and energy and are still looking for a relatively active home and owner to keep them occupied. They would also love to find an owner who can spend most of the day with them if possible and can live with children over 13 years of age. Ozzi is a handsome 2 year old black and white domestic short haired cat. He entered RSPCA care in April 2014 after being found as an injured stray. He had an abscess on his face which was treated at a local vet and has now fully healed. Unfortunately for Ozzi he was not microchipped or wearing a collar and we were therefore unable to locate his owner,
so he is now looking for a new home. Ozzi is a friendly boy who loves to be stroked andlikes to sit on your knee for a cuddle. He is friendly towards the other cats in the cattery and so would possibly settle with another cat in his newhome. He requires outdoor access and can live with children of any age. Jenni is a beautiful 14 week old female domestic short haired kitten. She entered RSPCA care in May 2014 as a result of a report to our cruelty line. Jenni, Tucka and Nipper were found living in a shed and we believe they were most likely born there. They were extremely nervous of people when they first arrived and have spent the last few weeks in a foster home where they are receiving lots of socialisation. Jenni is the most playful of the three kittens and enjoys having her chin tickled, Nipper is the most confident and first to investigate new things
39
CHLOE and Tucka is the little nervous boy who lets his siblings take the lead. They are all making good progress but are looking for patient and understanding owners who have time and experience to help them to gain confidence and realise the world isn’t as scary as they currently think it is. Due to their nervous nature all three kittens are looking for adult only homes and will need to remain as indoor cats until they have grown in confidence. They would benefit from living with a confident cat but would rather not live with dogs. Chloe is an 18 month old black and white lurcher. She entered RSPCA care in April 2013 as part of a cruelty case and was transferred to Newcastle Branch in December 2013 due to lack of interest in her when she was released for rehoming. Chloe is an energetic dog who is still very puppy-like. She is looking for
JAMIE experienced dog owners who can provide her with the training she requires to teach her some good manners as she can be quite jumpy and mouthy at times. Chloe loves to play with toys and really enjoys going for walks too. She has spent some time in a foster home which she thoroughly enjoys but is hoping to find a real home soon. Chloe is sociable with other dogs and needs to find an adult-only household (18+ years) as she is not suitable to live with children. Chloe would rather find an owner who is home most of the day or where she could perhaps go to work with them as she is not keen on being left for long periods of time. Jamie is handsome 2 year old domestic short haired cat. He entered RSPCA care in February 2014 after being handed into a local vets as a stray in poor condition.

Jamie has settled well and is ready to find a new home. He has a friendly temperament and loves to be stroked, he purrs happily to show his enjoyment. He doesn’t mind being picked up but this is more on his terms. Jamie is looking for a home where he will be able to be out and about as he’s used to having space to explore. He would be happiest in a home of his own, without other cats and would be fine to live with children over 10 years of age. If you are looking to adopt one of our animals, please contact Sarah Vasey (Rehoming co ordinator) on 07973 952575. Viewings are by appointment only and the office hours are 10-3 pm

Why Choose a Pre-Payment Funeral plan? A Pre-Payment funeral plan is a secure and cost-effective way of ensuring that your funeral is arranged and paid for in advance at today’s prices, giving you security and enjoying your life. It’s a thoughtful way to make things easier for your family at one of the most distressing times. You’ll have arranged everything in advance: chosen your funeral director, specified your wishes and taken care of the funeral costs.
you have the reassurance that your money is protected. Your money is invested to ensure that, whatever happens, there will be sufficient funds available for your funeral to take place as specified – providing protection against inflation, rising costs.
A funeral plan lets you fix the cost of your funeral director’s services at today’ prices. There will be nothing more to pay for these services, no matter how much costs rise.
The funeral directors are often familyrun businesses who have served their communities for generations. They answer to you, not to corporate managers or shareholders, which means you receive a local, personal service when it matters most.

How To Find A Good Tradesman 1. Be Clear What you Want Done
3. Don’t use “Knock at the Door” Traders
description of the job to be done, the cost and any VAT.
Before calling anyone, make sure you know what you want them to do. You’ll be doing yourself a favour too because the clearer you are, the easier it is for the builder, plumber or whoever to quote accurately.
Just don’t ! If someone knocks and tells you they’ve spotted a problem with your roof, chimney, gutters etc and can fix it for you, just thank them politely for pointing it out - then get a reputable tradesman to come and have a look.
5. Follow up References
2. Recommendations Good tradesmen get a lot of their work through recommendations from previous customers. So it makes sense to tap into that when you respond to their advertisement ask them if they have any references of previous work. Ask the appropriate trade body for a list of recommended tradesmen in your area.
4. Get 3 Quotes Getting three quotes for the same work gives means you’ll know if one is wildly different. Make it clear you want a quote and not an estimate. A quote is a fixed price for the job and an estimate is really only an approximate guide. The quotes should be on headed paper with their details, a full
Ask for references from previous customers. Any decent tradesman will be perfectly happy to supply these. Make sure you follow them up by giving them a call.
6. Is the Work Guaranteed Ask about the warranty they give for their work and how they deal with this. You need to know that if anything goes wrong they’ll come back and sort it out quickly and properly.
7. Decide Who to Employ Decide who you want to do the job but don’t base this solely on the price.

Who are you happiest with. Did they come across as professional and knowledgeable? Did they welcome questions and give you clear answers. Did you find it easy to get on with them.
8. Agree the Job in Writing Once you’ve decided, agree the job in writing. This should detail the work, the time it will take and when it will be completed, any access and storage arrangements, and the payment details. For larger jobs it’s reasonable to make stage payments as the work progresses. If it needs to be broken down of what is being paid for and look round the job to make sure it tallies.
9. Keep their Business Card One good tradesman tends to
know others in the area and you never know what other jobs you may need doing later. They get to know each other via previous jobs, previous customers and local builders and trade merchants. And, they’ll know who’s good (and who not to use!) Being able to give them a call and ask for a recommendation is really useful.
10. Making Changes and Tackling Problems 16
Avoid making changes once it has all been agreed. If you have to make changes, get the extent and the cost agreed in writing. If you have any concerns as the job moves along, say so straight away. Leaving a problem will only make matters worse. Don’t be shy, talk to them as soon as possible. Apart from that, keep out of their way and a mid morning and mid afternoon cuppa won’t go amiss However, though !
