Tradition, with a twist
‘The Souk at Qaryat Al Beri’ is a unique venue and the first of its kind in Abu Dhabi. Built on two levels, The Souk is an interesting fusion of Arabian architecture with a Venetian theme, which together reflects traditional Arab hospitality. Water canals meander through The Souk and nearby properties with abra boats ferrying hotel guests from the Shangri-La Hotel to various locations. Several restaurants and coffee shops have alfresco dining terraces that overlook the waters and afford a view of the picturesque landscape.

PASSION FOR PRECISION ——— Innovation and craftsmanship is at the heart of every Montblanc timepiece
With a rich heritage that dates back centuries, Montblanc has crafted a legacy that’s built on the foundation of precision. From the pinnacle of writing instruments to the global appeal of the historic Meisterstück 149, it was only a matter of time before their craftsmanship embraced another time-honoured craft, watchmaking. Montblanc Montre S.A. was established in Le Locle in 1997. It reflected this inherent philosophy of master craftsmanship and its first timepiece, to the delight of connoisseurs, was also a Meisterstück. Many more breakthroughs followed. Montblanc brought movement manufacturer Minerva into its fold a few years later, the first Montblanc manufactured movement was released in 2008 and, in 2011, the Tourbillon Bi-Cylindrique, the world’s first wristwatch to feature a tourbillon with two cylindrical balance springs, was proudly unveiled. And that’s just a few of the maison’s many achievements. “A sense of heritage, craftsmanship and a pioneering spirit is at the core of everything Montblanc does. As a maison, it is driven by the vision of distinction and a dedication for the highest quality, ultimate performance, true innovation and the finest craftsmanship – qualities which are intrinsic to each of our categories,” says Eric Vergnes, president of Montblanc Middle East, India and Africa. “In 2010 we developed and built the ExoTourbillon automatic calibre MB M29.24 movement exclusively in-house, placing the balance wheel outside of the rotating cage of the tourbillon for the first time ever. This is a movement that features heavily in our latest collections, saving 30 percent more energy and allowing precision
timekeeping performance. Over the years, we have developed a reputation for excellence and craftsmanship. Our skilled watchmakers have mastered every variety of chronograph technology, while meticulous testing guarantees the high quality of movements so that every single part of a Montblanc watch functions flawlessly and harmoniously, long after it has left our Swiss manufacture,” adds Vergnes, who says that it remains important for Montblanc to continue referencing the past. “With over 150 years of uninterrupted Swiss watchmaking heritage through our manufactures, Montblanc is committed to preserving traditional watchmaking at the highest level, and creating innovative timepieces of the utmost precision, perfection and durability, all the while expressing the core values upon which the Minerva manufacture was founded in 1858. “So much of our watchmaking history is deeply rooted in the Minerva heritage, which has been a part of Montblanc since 2010. For the very same reason of cherishing our heritage, we reference our past watchmaking by modernising some of our historical timepieces, like the 1858 Collection.” 2016 was a significant year for the maison as it celebrated its 110th anniversary with the launch of several beautiful pieces. “The Villeret Tourbillon Cylindrique Pocket Watch & Navigator 110 Years Edition is one I’m particularly fond of as not many manufacturers are making pocket watches these days, so it felt like a courageous choice for Montblanc. A highly collectable one of a kind

design, it combines a nautical clock with a pocket watch, and represents the highest level of traditional craftsmanship with hand-engraving, hand-painting and Grand Feu enamelling,” explains Vergnes. Drawing inspiration from the height of Mont Blanc mountain, which peaks at 4,810 metres, the Montblanc 4810 collection of timepieces also stands out in style. In fact, Vergnes believes it also features a truly ‘timeless’ model that every aficionado should own – the Montblanc 4810 Orbis Terrarum. “It interprets one of the most contemporary and useful complications – the world time functions – in a beautifully new and innovative way. This recognisable design tells the time in 24 time zones in an intelligent and intuitive manner, thanks to a manufacture complication developed in-house by Montblanc’s master watchmakers. With the dial constructed from multiple layers of sapphire crystal discs and displaying the continents as viewed from the North Pole, it is a truly functional piece of art.” Vergnes also admits there’s increasing recognition of high complication pieces and larger sizes in women’s timepieces: “You will see this reflected in our new Boheme ExoTourbillon collection – the first female timepiece to include the maison’s exclusive in-house patented ExoTourbillon – which honours today’s sophisticated and independent ladies with the height of horological excellence.” This year, the Montblanc 1858 Collection reinterprets the famous Minerva military chronographs from the 1930s, with distinct designs
and vintage-inspired timepieces that use bronze for the first time. As Montblanc prepares to unveil more masterpieces at the Salon International de La Haute Horlogerie (SIHH) this month, enthusiasts may wonder about the direction of Monblanc, especially as smart wearable technology remains one of the most talked about topics. Vergnes reaffirms that Montblanc will forever remain committed to the art of craftsmanship. “The arrival of smartwatches are a new addition to the watch industry, although, in terms of trends, I am not sure how long it will last, or how deep it will run. I believe a deep appreciation for the craftsmanship of traditional Swiss watchmaking and classic mechanical luxury watches will not dissipate anytime soon with true horological enthusiasts.” Vergnes goes on to insist: “Montblanc is relevant to today’s collector and while we are conscious of new technologies, it will not be the sole driving force behind our timepieces – exceptional craftsmanship is, and this will continue.” —— Discover the latest Montblanc timepieces at the flagship boutique in The Galleria at Al Maryah Island. Aficionados can now admire an exclusive edition of the Lange 1 Time Zone, released in a rich honey gold. It was fittingly unveiled on October 25 last year, a date that recalls the presentation of the first Lange collection 22 years ago in the Dresden residential palace – and the limited 100-watch edition features a subtle detail: on the rotating city ring, Central European Time is represented by Dresden.

Don’t let its looks fool you – this is one of the most complicated datetracking watches, complete with a perpetual calendar and precision indications of the date, day of the week, month and phases of the moon. In fact, you’ll only need to correct the date before March 1 in the year 2100, a non-leap year that appears three centuries out of four.

STRIKE A CHORD ——— International concert series Abu Dhabi Classics hits all the right notes with the capital’s music aficionados
Now in full swing, the Abu Dhabi Classics has been delighting classical music enthusiasts across the UAE with its compelling line-up of world-class performers and musicians since its launch night in October 2016. Praised for encouraging a cultural dialogue in the region, the event’s concerts play to record audiences every year at spectacular venues across the city with this year’s performances based around the seasonal theme of ‘One Thousand and One Nights’. The eight-month long series kicked off on October 6, with Emirates Palace playing host to The West Australian Symphony Orchestra (WASO). The orchestra’s debut visit to the capital featured a night dedicated to 19th century German composer Richard Wagner in front of a 900 strong audience. Speaking after the opening night, HE Mohamed Khalifa Al Mubarak, Chairman, Abu Dhabi Tourism & Culture Authority (TCA Abu Dhabi), said: “Witnessing such a wonderful and inspirational performance from a world class ensemble of musicians to launch our Abu Dhabi music programme season was a privilege for me and everyone else in attendance. One of TCA Abu Dhabi’s key
mandates is to engage the community in diverse artistic expressions, to host in Abu Dhabi performing arts experts and to conduct educational workshops for our youth.” Taking place at grand locations across the capital, the remainder of the schedule promises to bring this year’s season to another inspiring end. This month, acclaimed Spanish conductor, musician and composer Jordi Savall returns to the emirate to continue his musical tribute to famed Arabian explorer Ibn Battuta. Following on from the successful world premiere of Ibn Battuta: The voyager of Islam, From Morocco to Afghanistan (13141336), which Savall debuted at the 2014 Abu Dhabi Classics, this year brings the sequel concert, entitled Ibn Battuta: The voyager of Islam, From Afghanistan to China (1336-1346) to the Emirates Palace Auditorium on January 13. Then on January 15, Savall travels to the beautiful Bin Hamooda Fort in Al Ain Oasis for his second performance of this highly anticipated series. Later in the month, on January 20, Abu Dhabi Theatre welcomes the brilliant musical duo of
French violinist Renaud Capuçon and pianist David Fray. Guests can look forward to a night of Bach and Beethoven sonatas from these celebrated artists. Other festival highlights include the Vienna State Opera Gala Evening on February 8. Hailed as one of the most prestigious orchestras in the world, the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra will perform, for one night only, in the capital, one of the Vienna State Opera’s seasonal highlights, the Mozart masterpiece Don Giovanni. The 2016/2017 edition of Abu Dhabi Classics then draws to a close with the spectacular Toulouse Symphony Orchestra featuring Tugan Sokhiev and Edgar Moreau with the Music of 1001 Nights by Ravel, Nielsen and Saint-Saëns. Inspired by the majestic tales drawn from 1001 Nights, the orchestra, under Sokhiev’s direction, will perform pieces that bring the characters and settings of this well-known story to life. This final concert will take place at the Emirates Palace Auditorium.

GOURMET FLAIR ——— Executive chef Cladys Magagna takes culinary charge at Fairmont Bab Al Bahr
Sleek and modern, Fairmont Bab Al Bahr combines luxe facilities with a tranquil beachfront location. Also home to some of the capital’s most well known celebrity restaurants, think Frankie’s Italian Restaurant & Bar and Marco Pierre White Steakhouse & Grill, visitors can look forward to a firstclass culinary experience. On hand to ensure the property’s gastronomic offerings live up to these high expectations, Italian chef Cladys Magagna takes his responsibilities, at the property he’s been based at for the past four years, very seriously. “First of all, as an executive chef responsible for over 90 chefs I have to ensure that I provide an environment in which each individual can interact respectfully and work together as a team. Secondly. I need to ensure the consistency of our signature restaurants, so we can retain the loyalty of our guests, which is very important as there are always other competitors around the corner.” Bringing a wealth of experience to his position at Fairmont Bab Al Bahr, Magagna, who holds a masters degree in Food and Beverage Management & Hospitality Marketing from Cornell University in New York, reveals: “I’ve been working professionally in the culinary industry for the past 20 years, spending the last 10 years in four Fairmont Hotels and Resorts’ properties based in Bermuda, Mexico and UAE. Since 2012 I’ve had the opportunity to live here in this amazing city and I’ve noticed that, over the years, the dining scene in Abu Dhabi has undergone a rapid transformation. Now, with the range of international restaurants opening up, the capital has incredible options that cater to all sorts of palates. Which is exactly why as a chef you need to remain constantly innovative. “When it comes to creating new dishes, I start by opening my recipes database where I have over 4,000 recipes saved. I also browse through websites like Pinterest and review the recent product lists from our suppliers. Using a combination of these three components I have come out with some pretty great dishes. I also support the purchasing of ingredients with high nutritional value.”
“At Fairmont Bab Al Bahr, all the signature dishes we’ve created in our award-winning restaurants have gained popularity thanks to the guests who return time and time again with amazing feedback. Some of our guests have described the steaks at Marco Pierre White as the most flavourful they have ever had. This is thanks largely to our natural and fresh herbs seasoning that gives the meat a unique flavour once its been grilled. At Frankie’s we have a reputation for being the best Italian restaurant in Abu Dhabi and our Sicilian black cod is truly a gourmet experience.” Chatting about the influences of his Italian heritage, Magagna says: “It is unimaginable for me cook any dish without an Italian influence. My inspiration to become a chef comes from my homeland, my culture and the love my family shares for food. I truly believe that inspiration comes naturally from within. Yes, it may be triggered by a certain aroma or vision but ultimately it comes from within you.” Talking us through some of his top dishes, Magagna reveals: “It is so difficult for me to prioritise only a few dishes. However, if I have to pick, first is the broil bone marrow we serve at Marco Pierre White. Second would be the crispy soft shell crab and finally the fettuccine alfredo di lelio from Frankie’s, which dates back to 1914. I choose these three as I always have such great feedback on each of these dishes.” Coming up there’s plenty for new and returning guests to look forward to. “We are increasing our dining offering with a brand new Japanese restaurant serving a high-end selection of sushi and a shabu-shabu hot pot dishes that will be second to none in Abu Dhabi. In addition to that we are building a brand new sports bar featuring a large variety of draft beer and top quality bar food. And last but not least is our new Spanish restaurant Puesta del Sol, located by the sea offering stunning views of Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque.” —— To book at table at one of the restaurants at Fairmont Bab Al Bahr, contact: 02 6543333

As diners around the world eagerly seek out its exotic combination of flavours, visitors to Abu Dhabi will discover authentic Thai fare that whole-heartedly embraces Thailand’s wonderful vibrancy and sense of tradition. One of our top picks for Thai dining is Pachaylen at Eastern Mangroves Hotel & Spa by Anantara. From the glorious gold finishes and pops of royal purple to the impeccable service and artfully presented dishes, every element has been designed to leave a lasting impression. Diners begin the evening with Pachaylen’s welcome miang kham – an elegant wooden box filled with zesty seasonings like lime, chilli and dried shrimp which diners can fold into a wild betel leaf, creating a deliciously explosive mouthful of Thai flavours. There’s plenty more to follow, with signatures such as slow-cooked lamb shank massaman curry and pad Thai khoong sodd. 7

—— Japan’s diverse cultural identity is especially evident in its eclectic range of cuisine. Often striking a rare balance between traditionalism and modernity, influences stem from local customs and geographical locations as each region brings something unique to the table. Nestled within Venetian Village, Inakaya offers authentic Japanese robata-yaki style cooking – robata meaning ‘around a sunken hearth’ and yaki meaning ‘grilling’. A must for diners looking for a little joviality with their meal, pull up a seat along the main counter and enjoy the showmanship of the grill masters in action as you dine on succulent cuts enthusiastically served straight to your plate on long wooden paddles. The menu’s robata ingredients range from juicy Kobe beef and free-range chicken to melt-in-your-mouth black cod fillet and king crab leg. So there’s certainly more than enough to tempt the palate. Adjoining The Ritz-Carlton Abu Dhabi, Grand Canal, and adjacent to Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque,Venetian Village’s al fresco promenade affords glorious waterside views, so now is also the perfect time to take advantage of the capital’s cooler climes and admire the great views from the terrace.

The sheer amount of Lebanese eateries in not only the capital but also in the UAE is awe-inspiring and it’s highly recommended that those new to the region give this captivating cuisine a try. Situated within the prestigious Jumeirah at Etihad Towers, Li Beirut prides itself on giving traditional Lebanese dishes a contemporary spin. Here diners can expect to feast upon enchanting flavours like foie gras kebbeh with walnut chutney and almond purée, as well as pan seared diver scallops with crab harra to start, mains include zaatar-crusted rack of lamb with sweet potato boulangère and the restaurant’s speciality Arabic mixed grill. All these dishes can be found on the chef’s signature à la carte menu or if you and your companions would like to try a variety of dishes, there are several set menus that highlight some of the restaurant’s best offerings.

Tucked away on the first f loor of Dalma Mall you’ll find Feathers Fashion, a high-end accessories boutique specialising in fine jewellery, wallets, pens and handbags. The brainchild of Emirati entrepreneur Khalid Basaeed, Feathers Fashion is the first ever homegrown luxury goods brand and it has taken the UAE shopping scene by storm. “The concept behind Feathers Fashion is to reflect the culture of the UAE. The heart of the brand is local, from the raw materials we use to the Arabian pattern designs. Our products make wonderful gifts and mementos, because you won’t find these pieces anywhere else in the world,” explains Basaeed. We love the camel leather wallets and funky watches here. A labour of love is perhaps the best way to describe multi-brand boutique, LA Rags at Al Seef Village Mall on Salam Street. The California-inspired fashion store, which started life in the living room of part-time designer and personal shopper Salma Saad, was originally called Mirabelle Boutique, but was re-branded when the store moved premises and introduced menswear to its range. MINBART
The first of its kind in Abu Dhabi, Minbart is a boutique and gallery at Al Raha Beach that acts as a creative platform for artists and designers to display their pieces. “There are lots of creative communities around and they were lacking a platform to showcase their work – hence the idea for Minbart was born,” says founder and owner, Sheikha Alia Al Qassimi. The Forge holds all things meaty at the heart of its culinary philosophy. Promoting an impressively global feel, menu highlights of French Charolais beef, Spanish Iberico beef, Canadian veal, Australian Wagyu Tomahawk and Welsh lamb, are served alongside a choice of plump lobster tail, foie gras or bone marrow. For a twist on an old favourite, the chef also recommends the ‘Wow’ Wagyu beef burger decadently dressed with pan-fried duck liver and truffle sauce. Located within The Ritz-Carlton Abu Dhabi, Grand Canal, the venue itself radiates a refined sense of style with plush interiors and warm lighting. Hailing from the sunny shores of Los Angeles, BOA Steakhouse proudly keeps much of its focus on American-inspired dishes and fabulous prime mid-western cuts. Think succulent rib-eyes and 35-day dry aged New York Strip. The restaurant’s turf section is peppered with premium grills, including the Blackmore Wagyu with a marble score of 9+ and Master Kobe beef as well as an impressive Porterhouse weighing in at a hefty 670 grammes. All cuts are offered with either a rub, such as tri-peppercorn, or you can pair your steak with homemade sauces including BOA’s signature J1. With so much to tempt the taste buds it’s understandable that you may struggle to whittle down your choice so opt for the Friday brunch packed with some of the best-loved dishes. Contact: 02 6411500
As the youngest chef to ever be awarded three Michelin stars, the Marco Pierre White name is synonymous with a certain standard of fine dining. And in a city that’s become a haven for celebrity chefs, this seasoned venue still stands out amongst the crowd. Nestled within the luxurious Fairmont Bab Al Bahr, diners are sure to find themselves enticed by the menu’s many delicacies, starting with appetisers of seared foie gras, soft shell crab and fresh Kelly oysters. Of course, if it’s the meaty mains you’re after, take your pick from the likes of 9+ marble Master Kobe beef, Wagyu Chateaubriand and the sizable one kilogramme cowboy steak for two. And don’t leave without trying the famed sticky toffee pudding. Contact: 02 6543238

GO FOR GREEK
The popularity of Greek eateries certainly seems to be on the rise in the region, with many foodies lapping up the vivacious flavours flooding in from the Greek Isles. One of the first Greek restaurants in the capital, Acropolis is as loved for its warm and inviting atmosphere as it is for its tasty, authentic Mediterranean fare. Nestled within Le Méridien Abu Dhabi’s quaint Méridien Village, it’s reminiscent of a traditional Greek taverna, complete with blue gingham check tablecloths and a lovely al fresco terrace. Much like the setting, the menu, according to executive chef, Patrick Van Velzen, has been designed to “reflect the friendliness and generosity of the Greeks”. Discover wholesome dishes such as rich mousaka and hearty stifado beef stew. Meat-lovers can take their pick from chunky grilled cuts, all of which go perfectly with the restaurant’s homemade tzatziki and traditional choriatiki Greek salad. Contact: 02 6440348

When you think of Spanish cuisine it’s hard not to think of tapas. Small yet hearty, these dishes are a great way to enjoy tasty Spanish classics such as spicy chorizo and manchego cheese, slow cooked beef in red wine, crispy patatas bravas and the muchloved egg and potato omelette – tortilla de patata tradicional. Fortunately for fans of this wonderfully social cuisine, Bravo at Sheraton Abu Dhabi Hotel & Resort delivers on all culinary counts. The eclectic menu also boasts four different types of paella, including paella negra de calamar’s seafood celebration of Spanish rice brimming with calamari, shrimps and mussels. Bravo’s famed rich, custardy crema Catalana is then the perfect way to bring your Spanish feast to an end. The venue itself also hosts regular tapas and sangria promotions and live Flamenco music making it the ideal hangout to catch up with friends and family. Contact: 02 6725149
With an emphasis on robust, fresh ingredients, flavours that sing with undeniable vibrancy and a culinary philosophy that heartily promotes lively family get-togethers, it’s easy to see why Italian cuisine has endeared itself into the hearts of food aficionados from all walks of life. Savour all the charm and authenticity you’ve come to love about this scrumptious cuisine with a visit to Bocca at Hilton Abu Dhabi. To start, the antipasti selection is seriously tempting. Tuck into plump buffalo burrata, truffle tapenade carpaccio and the ever-popular vitello tonnato – thinly sliced veal with tuna tartar. For mains, you can’t fault the tantalising seafood linguine with a hint of chilli or the succulent veal escallops with Parma ham, sage and Romanesco broccoli. Finally round off your meal with a silky pannacotta that’s made with camel milk for a unique regional twist. Contact: 02 6924160

EMIRATES PALACE The iconic palace takes pride of place at the tip of the Abu Dhabi Corniche and embodies the luxury lifestyle the capital has cultivated. Until recently, the most expensive hotel ever to be built, the impressive structure is richly adorned with precious materials. Twelve different shades of marble can be spotted in the cavernous atrium, while the central dome holds dual records as both the largest in the world and the greatest gilded expanse ever created in one building.

ASK THE CONCIERGE
Sanjeev Kumar, concierge at Al Raha Beach Hotel, shares his top tips for exploring the emirate
1
Abu Dhabi, the capital of the United Arab Emirates, is a wonderfully dynamic city that offers various attractions, adventures and leisure options for every type of visitor to enjoy – whether you’re here as a family or staying for business. Situated along the beautiful Arabian Gulf, the capital, in addition to its five-star offerings and modern towers, is still very much steeped in the rich cultural history of its past. Discover more about the region and its many interesting traditions with a visit to places such as Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque. This impressive venue is open to all religions and provides unique insight into Islamic faith and Arabian architecture. Another top place to visit is Heritage Village. Located along the Corniche Breakwater, the venue showcases recreated Bedouin homes as well as arts and crafts from the past. Abu Dhabi Falcon Hospital is then great for bird lovers and provides visitors the chance to learn more about the UAE’s national bird. There is also plenty of choice for those keen on an action-packed holiday. Head out into the

golden desert where you can drive over the majestic sand dunes in a dune buggy, or quad bike, or try a desert safari with a feast of local cuisine served under the stars. Yas Marina Circuit is also great for adrenaline seekers. Get behind the wheel of a race car and tear around one of the world’s most famous Formula 1 tracks, home of the Formula 1 Etihad Airways Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. In the evening, I’d suggest booking a dhow dinner cruise during which you can enjoy sunset views of the city’s magical waterways, a regional and international buffet and live entertainment. A stroll along the capital’s picturesque Corniche is another great way to admire the sunset. If shopping is on your itinerary, you’ll be pleased to discover Abu Dhabi is home to several world-class malls. For designer labels and luxury shopping The Galleria on Al Maryah Island and Avenue at Etihad Towers are both top choices. A visit to Yas Mall is also a must as it offers everything from great retail brands to family entertainment. The mall is also linked to Ferrari World Abu Dhabi, the world’s first indoor Ferrari-inspired theme park with recordbreaking roller coasters and thrilling rides. Dining in the capital is remarkably diverse and Al Raha Beach Hotel offers a great variety, from sports action and a pub atmosphere at McGettigan’s to premium drinks and live piano playing at the Black Pearl Bar. For couples who would like to enjoy a romantic dining experience I’d highly recommend La Piscine. The candle lit tables, poolside location and beachfront views certainly make for a memorable night. Another favourite is Azur, the hotel’s popular Mediterranean restaurant that’s renowned for its great food and service. 3
