E D I T O R ’S N O T E —— Welcome to our special issue dedicated to all things haute horology. As the Salon International de la Haute Horlogerie takes place in Geneva this month, it’s the ideal time to celebrate some of the world’s finest timepiece designers and their creations. When it comes to crafting high-end complications, Audemars Piguet is without parallel. From its home in the centre of Swiss watchmaking, the company’s artisans have led the way with extraordinary designs and stunning movements. For three decades, passionate watchmaker Giulio Papi has been the man behind many of Audemars Piguet’s innovations. Concierge talks to the watchmaker on page 32. A local success story, Ahmed Seddiqi & Sons has carved a name for itself as one of the region’s foremost watch retailers, setting a new standard when it comes to bringing Swiss timepieces to the region. Decades in the making, the family run firm now looks to the next generation to carry on the proud legacy. Turn to page 37 for an interview with Mohammed Seddiqi where he fondly remembers his grandfather Ahmed Seddiqi. We also delve into the world of independent watchmaking with one of the industry’s most exciting new watchmaking houses, Greubel Forsey. Turn to page 48 for an interview with co-founder Stephen Forsey. Elsewhere in the issue, we take to the skies on a hot air balloon ride for our photo essay on page 58, and on page 83, we explore some of the city’s most exciting new dining destinations as the new year begins.

IN THE MOVEMENT ——— Concierge meets Giulio Papi, the man who has spent three decades crafting some of Audemars Piguet’s greatest pieces

When it comes to high-end complications, Audemars Piguet stands apart. Setting the standard amongst a very exclusive club of the world’s greatest timepiece creators, an illustrious 140-year history has seen the company craft an extraordinary portfolio of complex pieces. From its home at the heart of Swiss watchmaking, in the Vallée de Joux, innovations have gone on to become icons. Central to that work is Giulio Papi, who has for more than 30 years been responsible for the minute repeaters, escapements, tourbillons and perpetual calendars that have not only earned him a formidable reputation among his peers, but helped shape the future of watchmaking. An early fascination for all things mechanical set Papi on a path that in the Swiss watchmaking city of La Chaux-de-Fonds, was sure to head in one direction. “When I was a child, I loved mechanical things, such as wheels, car engines, bikes, planes, anything that was mechanical. From there, watchmaking was a natural step. To me, a watch is like a little machine,” says Papi. In 1980, he enrolled at La Chaux-de-Fonds’ watchmaking school, where he completed an eight-year programme in half the time.

“I was the only one in my classroom, as no-one else wanted to learn watchmaking at the time. Japanese quartz watches were strong and a lot of people lost their jobs, no one believed in mechanical watches anymore. But I still loved them, this was my passion and I wanted to learn as much as I could. I remember spending long hours with my teachers who taught me so much, from how to calculate and design and how to use machines, to assembly, polishing and making tools,” says Papi. Papi started as an apprentice at Audemars Piguet, and had the chance to realise his dreams working on complex timepieces. “Audemars Piguet is of course well known for its complicated watches. My first job there was to make an open-worked watch. I learned all the secrets of polishing, bevelling and satining. There was a lot to learn but I was quick. After 18 months, I went to the human resources office and asked to work on complicated watches. They were astonished, and while they thought my request was ‘cute’ for a young boy like me, they told me I’d have to wait 20 years. I couldn’t believe it, the only thing I could think to do was to launch my own manufacture,” says Papi.

——

Challenging watchmaking’s status quo, Papi and his Audemars Piguet colleague Dominique Renaud struck out on their own in 1986. Operations began from their apartment in La Chaux-de-Fonds, and the Renaud et Papi workshop was born. “We built the workshop in my apartment, and that’s where it all started. I then bought a computer, and created software for watch calculations. This really changed things for us, by making the process much easier. There is so much formula in watchmaking, if you change something, you have to constantly recalculate, and by hand, that takes a lot of time. In the past, working out calculations by hand would mean you could only make a new complication every 10 years. My software completely changed that and was a revolution at the time. We had a lot of interest and successes early on that gave us a good start. “Opportunities started coming our way and we decided to build our own manufacture, but for that we had to buy machines and hire other watchmakers. We needed money and went to the bank, but they didn’t believe in us.” Marking a return to the duo’s watchmaking roots, Audemars Piguet stepped in and offered to buy a sizeable stake in the fledgling business. In 1992, the company merged with Audemars Piguet to become Audemars Piguet Renaud et Papi (APRP), as it is known today. “We went to Audemars Piguet for help because we loved working with them, their wristwatches are truly classical, complicated pieces. We agreed, but for us an important point was that we had to be able to manage the manufacture and keep our own strategies, like using computers and modern machines. We asked them to believe in us. “At that time old watchmakers were convinced that the only way to make a complicated watch was to use paper and pencil, and to use traditional machines. But we wanted to use a mixture of technology and craftsmanship. I use machines because they are constant and the precision is high, but behind that I need exceptional craftsmen. If you don’t understand how to do the same work by hand, how to polish, how to cut, then you won’t succeed,” says Papi.

At the last count, there are more than 160 people hard at work with Papi in the R&D department of Audemars Piguet. It’s very much a traditional manufacture, where the focus is firmly on hand work. “My philosophy is well-done work, and a clean, well-ordered workshop. It sends a good message to the workers. There is a difference between a ‘marketing’ manufacture where everything is made to show off and maybe nothing works well, and a manufacture which looks good, but is also an efficient machine,” says Papi. The manufacture’s achievements are many, contributing to some of the most stunning models from Audemars Piguet in recent years. Standouts include the Royal Oak Perpetual Calendar, adding a complication to the signature timepiece, first released in 1972 with a striking octagonal bezel and Grande Tapisserie dial. The Millenary collection for women showcases a stunning movement at the heart of a unique oval dial. And recent release, the Royal Oak Perpetual Calendar in Yellow Gold is a stunning pre-SIHH (Salon International de la Haute Horlogerie) 2016 novelty. What Papi is most proud of however is Audemars Piguet’s new minute repeater to be launched during SIHH 2016 this month. He says: “We worked on the acoustic quality of the minute repeater, to increase the volume and improve the quality of its sound. It’s a very hard thing to do, because when you try to increase the volume, you normally decrease the quality of the sound.” Looking to future developments, he adds: “I hope people continue to appreciate that the best quality is made by hand. Hand working brings the creativity of each person to the fore. A luxury watch, in my opinion, is a fusion of that.”

A FAMILY AFFAIR ——— Luxury watch retailer Ahmed Seddiqi & Sons is one of Dubai’s greatest homegrown success stories

More than 65 years ago, Emirati businessman Ahmed Qasim Seddiqi started a small company in Dubai that was to become one of the region’s most important watch and jewellery retailers. At the very heart of the thriving business, then and still to this day, is a commitment to keep the firm a family concern in a bid to honour the impressive legacy of its founder. “My grandfather passed away in 2008. We were all very close to him, growing up I would go and visit him everyday with my father,” explains Mohammed Abdulmagied Seddiqi, chief commercial officer of Seddiqi Holding. “His dream was to see his children and his grandchildren happy, aside from growing his business, his main target in life was to see everyone happy. I’m sure that before he passed away he was proud of what we have done and achieved in his name.”

“WE HAVE ALWAYS FOLLOWED WHAT OUR GR ANDFATHER TAUGHT US, ALL OF US IN THE FA MILY, HE WAS AN INSPIR ATION AND A TEACHER”

Ahmed Seddiqi opened his first showroom in Dubai in 1950, spurred on by his passion for high-quality Swiss watches. His many years spent travelling and collecting timepieces saw his purchases attract interest from likeminded local watch enthusiasts and the business quickly grew. From the beginning, the fledgling concern was built by the family, and Ahmed Seddiqi’s passion and dedication has served as a major inspiration for his children and grandchildren as they too enter the business. Mohammed says: “His influence on me has been great. From a young age I had passion for watches and on holidays from school I would go with my grandfather to his old showroom. It was amazing, to watch his way of dealing with people. His approach was basically not like a business relationship – but as all Dubai was at the time – a matter of establishing friendly relationships, building trust with people, and maintaining a good image. This is the basis of our company still – to be trusted, to give the right products and the best service that we can. “We have always followed what our grandfather taught us, all of us in the family, he was an inspiration and a teacher. Today my father and uncle are our teachers, but we see a lot of our grandfather in them, it’s a heritage that is passed on. “With the growth of Dubai, Ahmed Seddiqi & Sons grew. Today we carry more than 50 brands under our umbrella with more than 65 stores in the UAE - and we love it. It’s still a strictly family business. The chairman and vice-chairman are my father and my uncle, and we have eight family members who are 100 percent involved in the business, each one handling a different area.” Since its inception, Ahmed Seddiqi & Sons has played an integral role in bringing an impressive roster of premium brands to the UAE. Swiss watch brand West End became their first partner during the 1940s. Rolex was another significant acquisition in the 1950s, setting in place a motion that would see Ahmed Seddiqi & Sons develop long-standing relationships with a host of high-profile brands including Chopard, Corum, Patek Philippe, Piaget, A. Lange & Söhne, Hublot, IWC Schaffhausen and TAG Heuer, among many others. Perhaps a natural next step then for the company came last year with the inaugural Dubai Watch Week in October. The event, organised by Ahmed Seddiqi

& Sons, brought together leading lights, experts and enthusiasts from the watchmaking industry worldwide, all under one roof at Dubai International Financial Centre. It was such a success, Mohammed is hopeful the event could become an annual fixture. He says: “Personally, I think it would be a great idea to have the event on an annual basis. As long as we have the support of the royal family in Dubai and all of our sponsors, it can be done. Showing them what we have delivered last year will give us a stronger base to do it even better next time round. “The event is really all about education, to build awareness of what goes into fine watchmaking worldwide. The feedback we got from it was good, for watch lovers, for art lovers and for people who appreciate luxury, it was the right place to be. “For many of the watchmakers and creatives who attended, they are something of an endangered species in the watch industry. If we loose these skilled people, their craft is something that might not come back again, bearing in mind that these individuals keep the traditions of watchmaking alive today.” Looking to the future for watchmaking and the family-run business, Mohammed hopes to see future Seddiqi generations take the helm. He says: “I would like my own children to one day join the family business. My children visited the opening exhibition at Dubai Watch Week and it was great to show them what we had been working on. They love watches so it’s good to feed that passion from now onwards. “In the years to come, as a business we’d like to grow more, and maybe one day expand out with the UAE. It’s also very important that this company remains a family business. We have the fourth generation already working in it, hopefully we will see the fifth and sixth as well, we are waiting for that. With the spirit that we have in the family we believe that hopefully things will go well and we’ll do it.”

Today we carry more than 50 brands under our umbrella with more than 65 stores in the UAE – and we love it. It’s still a strictly family business. The chairman and vice-chairman are my father and my uncle, and we have eight family members who are 100 percent involved in the business

Built for adventure, Breitling’s new Avenger Blackbird boasts a list of exceptional features including rugged carbon coating, a large screw-locked crown with non-slip grip and the ability to remain water resistant up to 200m. The dial stands out with luminous hour markers and hands, along with a red border framing the date window. Famed for crafting watches for professionals, Breitling models are fitted with chronometer-certified movements, which are the ultimate token of precision. The Dubai Mall, 04 3882281

One of the highlights at Baselworld last year was Hublot’s avant-garde MP-12 Key of Time Skeleton. Presenting a non-conformist approach to time, the model’s HUB 9012 movement can vary how time is measured by speeding it up or slowing it down. This means that when on the speed up position (four times faster), real time is shown to pass in a quarter of an hour on the dial, and vice versa when in slow down mode. The Italian watch brand boasts a rich maritime heritage supplying instruments to the Royal Italian Navy. The Radiomir line has been in existence since 1936 and gets its name from a radium-based powder that gives luminosity to the dials. The new Radiomir Black Seal 8 Days Acciaio pays homage to its past with a stainless steel 45mm case and a minimalist dial displaying hours, minutes and small seconds, while also boasting water resistance of about 100m and a power reserve of eight days. The new RM 003 Tourbillon Yas Marina NTPT Dual Time Zone has been on our radar all summer. The trademarked NTPT carbon is a new material for watch cases which was originally developed for the sails of racing yachts and has also been used in the Formula 1 car chassis for the last two seasons. We’ve set our sights on the stylish TAG Heuer Formula 1 Chronograph, marking the 30th anniversary of the partnership between TAG Heuer and McLaren. Sporting a fiery ‘rocket red’ design, inspired by McLaren’s 1985 campaign, its quartz chronograph movement is accurate to a tenth of a second, displayed on the small counter at 6 o’clock, with the chronograph minute counter at 9 o’clock and the current seconds counter at 3 o’clock. Limited to 5,000 pieces. Ahmed Seddiqi & Sons, Mall of the Emirates, 04 3411211

French pilot Louis Blériot’s cross-Channel flight in 1909 made history and Zenith’s onboard instruments contributed to the feat, which is what makes the Pilot Type 20 Hommage à Louis Blériot all the more special. The dramatic dial is made from a deep grey meteorite – a fragment of the Muonionalusta asteroid – and features a natural motif of interlacing ribbons. It’s not just a pretty face though, as it boasts a number of technical feats including water resistant to 30m. Limited to five pieces. The Dubai Mall, 04 339104

PASSION & PRECISION ——— Greubel Forsey is emerging as a force to be reckoned with in the world of watchmaking

Founded just over a decade ago, Greubel Forsey already lays claim to producing the best timepiece in the world – Tourbillon 24 Secondes Vision. It won the Aiguille d’Or Grand Prix award, the most coveted distinction in the industry, at the 2015 Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Genève, earning the boutique watchmaker a whole new level of prestige. Greubel Forsey is the brainchild of talented watchmakers Robert Greubel and Stephen Forsey who first met in the 1990s when they shared a workbench at Renaud et Papi, lending their expertise to complicated mechanical movements. In 2004 they decided to launch Greubel Forsey, a brand that is today regarded by many as a prime example of fine Swiss watchmaking. “We didn’t have an objective to start a watch brand. What we wanted to do was explore different ideas in a mechanical watch and different mechanisms, and try to improve their performance,” explains co-founder Stephen Forsey. Once they discovered that their approach was completely unique and different from what was available in the market, it motivated them to go further. Their first invention, launched in 2004, was the complex Double Tourbillon 30° mechanism where one tourbillon – inclined at 30° and rotating in 60 seconds – operated inside another tourbillon that

rotated every four minutes. This invention was used in a number of timepieces including the renowned DT30° Vision watch where the complex mechanics were proudly visible on the dial. “With the first timepiece, we had a whole bunch of ideas but the challenges were more focused on getting the quality we wanted, as well as the reliability and performance to satisfy collectors. We really had no idea of the size or scale of the market or how widespread the collectors could be, so there were many things we didn’t know then that are much clearer today,” explains Forsey. Today Greubel Forsey produces extremely limited quantities –only about 100 watches a year – laying testament to its commitment to fine craftsmanship. Each model is an example of technical brilliance with a nod to traditional methods of hand finishing. The company caused a stir at last year’s Salon International de la Haute Horlogerie (SIHH) with the reveal of the Tourbillon 24 Secondes Vision – the smallest, thinnest, and most accessible Greubel Forsey timepiece in production, and one that’s recently won top honours in watchmaking with an Aiguille d’Or award. “We are not a brand that is driven by the market. Of course we listen to our collectors but we have our own strategy and mission and with the

Tourbillon 24 Secondes Vision, we really wanted to present a slimmer case. We set ourselves a new challenge to reduce the height of the movement by 2.5mm without sacrificing any technical performance and, at the same time, we wanted to revive traditional methods with engraved dials and ovenfired enamelled indices. It’s very interesting because it’s 10 percent more accessible than our previous entry level edition and yet it’s full of detail and fine hand finishing. “We don’t want to give too much away about 2016 but we always want to offer original and exciting creations, and if we can be more accessible, in our own dimensions, to a slightly wider audience and offer something of great value then we are more than happy to do so. But it will be many, many moons before you see a large scale offering from Greubel Forsey.”

Despite such a pioneering approach, the brand’s commitment to traditional watchmaking still shines through thanks to their work with the Time æon Foundation. With the aim of preserving the art of watchmaking, Time æon is founded by Greubel, Forsey and several other watchmakers from Europe including Philippe Dufour. “We saw that traditional watchmaking in itself was in danger and, after talking to independent watchmaker Philippe Dufour, we realised that the training on offer was being threatened. The time had to be shorter, the curriculum was squeezed and there was pressure on the cost of training. We could see that watchmaking skills were in decline and in danger of being lost forever,” explains Forsey. Working with Dufour and select watchmakers, they created the Time æon Foundation and began a grand project named ‘Le Garde Temps – Naissance d’une montre’. It involved choosing one person to craft a complicated mechanical timepiece entirely by hand and then pass on their knowledge and skills to students. A French watchmaking teacher from the Diderot vocational training college in Paris, Michel Boulanger, was chosen for the task. After several years of hard work, the project’s turning point came

at the 2015 edition of SIHH when Boulanger’s working prototype was presented to the public. “Naissance d’une montre was shown as a working model that had yet to be hand finished. Suddenly we had leverage and these last few months have been fantastic for the project as we now have concrete partners. Christie’s will auction this first ‘school’ watch in May 2016 in Hong Kong and all of the proceeds from the sale will go to Time æon, so this is a chance to build a financial resource for the foundation to be able to transmit the know-how. There are other partners including Ahmed Seddiqi & Sons, Elegant Watch in Hong Kong and we will hopefully add more from other regions too. It’s a project with huge dimensions and it’s very exciting,” says Forsey. The world of watchmaking continues to evolve as collectors focus on the craftsmanship on offer. Looking to the burgeoning local market, Forsey regards the Middle East as dynamic with a number of avid watch collectors. “We’re seeing a very, very rapid evolution in terms of a widening of interest. The Middle East market is more mature and has evolved a lot. There’s positive potential and it’s a bridging point between

Europe and Asia. I’m always surprised by how quickly you can start a dialogue with a collector from the region,” says Forsey. “In 11 years, the average age of our collectors has moved by nearly a generation. Our collectors are more in their 40s today while before they were more in their 60s. There’s a positive evolution with a younger generation becoming interested in mechanical watches. “Alongside a rush of technology with connected watches and high tech, there’s still a lot of interest in mechanical watches. I think people want to have something that’s handcrafted by an artisan and, in a way, by investing in that you are safeguarding the tradition of watchmaking.”

TARIQ MALIK ——— The watch specialist and founder of Momentum talks about the growing interest in collecting timepieces

Is there a place for nostalgia in today’s busy modern world? As our lives become ever more complex, is there any point in longing for days gone by – for a simpler time, when life held more of a sense of wonder? Surely new is always better than old, so why hold on to the past? A growing number of people are discovering that sometimes ‘old’ is better than ‘new’. With the unstoppable flood of all kinds of new digital gadgetry, it might come as a surprise, but it’s true. Vintage watches are more popular today than ever. Collecting is on the rise. This is because timepieces have heritage and history – something that is sorely lacking in a new gadget. Vintage watches remind us of the past, but not in the way that a history book does. Watches are delicate, intricate and artfully made, and more importantly, wearing them on the wrist is fun. Rolex, Omega and Patek Philippe are the most popular brands among today’s collectors. It’s an exclusive niche for a new breed of horological connoisseurs. It’s almost like a secret handshake, only for those in-theknow. A vintage watch is like a little detail that contains a vast, hidden world of interest. This is why I am so passionate about them.

The right vintage watch is also a great investment, not merely an over-priced accessory. Your grandfather’s prized old Rolex or even his pocket watch might be worth far more than you think. The value is determined by its age, brand, movement, condition, rarity – and also its back-story. Unlike new technology that becomes outdated soon after it is made, these fine old micro-machines were built to last. Walking into a shiny boutique and picking up a new designer watch is the way to go for some, but in my opinion, they are missing out on the real joy of watches and watchmaking. The advantage of vintage lies in the story that surrounds the watch: The first watch in space, or the same model that Paul Newman or Sean Connery wore, for example. It’s a deeply personal thing – and certain watches just feel right. There is also a kind of joy in the hunt for vintage watches. Finding out about the movement, the designer’s style and the artful techniques that were used all add to the experience. In years gone by, this was mostly inaccessible. Today, though, there are growing online communities dedicated to exploring this rare art. Exploring this fascinating world, you’ll find everything from hidden gems to

A VINTAGE WATCH IS LIKE A LIT TLE DETAIL THAT CONTAINS A VAST, HIDDEN WORLD OF INTEREST

those rare discoveries of models long thought to be lost. It’s a science, an art, and a passion. So how does one go about starting a collection? With so many pitfalls involved in trading vintage timepieces online, how can you be sure you won’t end up making a mistake? My advice: buy the seller first. It is very important to find a trader you trust. The first step is to find someone who really knows the details, and is passionate about collecting. A knowledgeable enthusiast will be able to guide you, and to spot a good investment. It pays to do your homework – or better yet, find someone who’s done the research already. A wristwatch is a very intimate accessory. It becomes part of you – an expression of something in your nature, something you love. That’s why it’s important to find a watch that really speaks your language. Vintage is certainly not outdated, so why not try something new, and invest in something old?

EXPERIE NCE In the shade

As the sun sets in Dubai, the city takes on an entirely new feel. A burnt orange glow casts the scene in a new light, superbly setting off the juxtaposition between the new and the old parts of town. Traditional-style architecture sits alongside some of the world’s most contemporary buildings, to perfectly represent the contrasts that define this dynamic destination.

blazing a trail ——— Concierge takes flight on a hot air balloon adventure

58

59

We drive down lonely roads as the city sleeps, watching the sky turn warm tones of blue and pink. Turning towards the desert and, as the sun prepares to rise, colourful hot air balloons come to life amid the backdrop of picture-perfect sand dunes. As we wait to board our hot air balloon with Balloon Adventures Emirates, the mammoth aircrafts are inflated using hot air from strategically maneuvered propane burners. While all the passengers are given a detailed briefing on what to expect, nothing quite prepares us for the excitement in store. The early morning start is more than worth it. In a matter of minutes, passengers are filing into the basket from the left and right and the balloon slowly takes off. This is the moment everyone has been waiting for – soaring higher and higher as great swathes of desert dunes come into view creating a dramatic setting. It’s a scene that captain Peter Kollar,

a seasoned hot air balloon pilot and managing director of Balloon Adventures Emirates, is very familiar with. He says: “I’ve been doing this for 24 years now and I still love my job. Every day is different and is influenced by several factors such as the weather, the passengers and overall flight, and some flights are better than others. The problem with ballooning, at least from a business point of view, is that the guest experience can’t be standardised because it depends largely on the wind. “To make it even more complicated, the starting time of our flights also depends on the month we fly, and that changes based on the sunrise. In winter, it’s later and as we progress into summer, it’s earlier so we can’t even tell people the exact take off time in advance. As you can imagine, you have got to be reasonably flexible to run a balloon company.”

Flights take pl ace early in the mornings when the cal m, cool conditions are ideal for ballooning. Every morning a dedicated ground crew is on hand at the take off site, by Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve, to prepare the balloons for flight

Captain Kollar has always had a love for the outdoors and has been flying hot air balloons since 1991. He set up his own ballooning company in New Zealand before deciding to move to the UAE after a chance encounter with businessman Abdullah Al Ashram in 2003. At the time Al Ashram was on his honeymoon when he flew with Kollar and enjoyed the experience so much that he suggested setting something similar up in Dubai. “I initially refused because I was already commuting regularly between Frankfurt in Germany and Christchurch in New Zealand for work, which involved a 23 hour flight, but the idea remained in my head. I later called Abdullah and said I’d plan to stop by in Dubai on my next trip. As luck would have it, that same year, Emirates Airlines started direct flights between Christchurch and Dubai,” Kollar explains.

This is Balloon Adventures Emirates’ 11th season in the UAE, with daily flights organised from the beginning of September until the end of May. Flights take place early in the mornings when the calm, cool conditions are best. Every morning a ground crew is on hand at the take off site, by Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve, to prepare the balloons about 45 minutes before the pilots and passengers arrive. “The experienced ground crew, also known as the advance team, lives in our camp in the desert. They prepare the balloons for hot inflation, which is essentially when you turn on the burners and heat the air around the balloon causing it to stand up. They take it up to the very last point and then wait for the pilot. It’s similar to an airplane where engineers prepare the plane before the pilot arrives and get things organised before take off.

“We also have to file a flight plan with air traffic control. We tell them what time we take off and other basic information. The flight plan is the same every day but we still have to call it in as we are a registered aircraft. Every country has a prefix for an aircraft and in the UAE its A6, so even all Emirates planes have A6 too. If I don’t feel it’s safe for flying, and safety is our number one consideration, we just don’t fly,” explains Kollar. Thankfully, the conditions on our trip are fine and as the sun slowly rises on the horizon, and the picturesque landscape is painted in hues of red and orange, we are presented with a different perspective of the UAE from 4,000 feet in the air. The journey is surprisingly smooth and passengers hardly notice movements of the balloon as it floats gently with the wind. Afterwards, Kollar makes a few adjustments so that the balloon is closer to the ground, gliding above waves of sand dunes as young gazelles and oryx come into view offering even more awe-inspiring photograph opportunities. Before long, we’re braced to land and we lock our safety belts to the basket and hold on tight. Our balloon

64

descends fairly quickly and in a matter of minutes, the basket tilts and safely lands on its side with all the passengers securely fastened. “For me, the best flights are when we have a variation of wind direction. In that situation, I can play with the balloons to go up and down and manoeuvre it. “Another enjoyable aspect is when we have a reasonably fast landing – it’s more of a technical challenge for me. The landing is the best part as it’s always interesting and exciting, even for the passengers. You could get a light landing where it’s two or three knots like a leaf, or you could be coming at 10 knots and slide on the ground. It’s impossible to know which kind of landing you’ll have in advance. I can always estimate but there’s no way to really know until it happens,” says Kollar. The balloon flight is undoubtedly an exhilarating experience for everyone, including Kollar who plans to keep flying for as long as he possibly can, though he doesn’t necessarily expect his young sons to follow in his footsteps: “My wife doesn’t want them to fly. She thinks I’m crazy.”

It’s easy to see why flyboarding has become such a popular pastime. Created by French jet-ski designer Franky Zapata, the exciting new sport has become a hit with high-profile fans the world over including Dubai’s own Crown Prince, HH Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum. In flyboarding the feet are strapped to a small board, not too dissimilar to that of a wakeboard, which in turn is connected to a jet ski through a long pipe. It’s the jet ski that then provides the power to propel flyboarders up to 10 metres above the waves. With just a decent sense of balance required, and no previous experience needed, there’s really no reason not to give it a try. Once you’ve mastered the board, learn tricks including backflips and diving, for endless entertainment. Day & Night Dubai, located in Jumeirah Fishing Harbour, offers flyboarding sessions with experienced instructors for a day out to remember.

While it’s generally considered to be a fitness fad that’s taken the world by storm of late, Stand Up Paddleboarding or SUP is actually a tradition that dates back thousands of years. Previously used by native cultures in Africa and the Pacific Isles for fishing and travel between smaller islands, today it’s a common site at public beaches and luxury resorts. The laid-back vibe, serene viewpoint and minimalist equipment all add to the sport’s attraction and thanks to the board’s generous size, Stand Up Paddleboarding is often integrated with several other trendy workouts, such as yoga and pilates. Visit Eden Beach Club at Rixos The Palm to try your hand at this new style of fusion fitness. Visitors can hire boards and paddle along the calm ocean waters of Palm Jumeriah at their leisure or opt for an al fresco workout with the resort’s SUP-FIT class that combines paddleboarding with a boot camp style workout.

Explore the east ——— Luxury spa treatments pay homage to the ancient healing philosophies of the east

For centuries health and beauty professionals have looked to the age-old customs of the east to aid wellbeing and restore balance and energy to the body. From practices in spiritual awakening to therapies championing naturally healing substances, many of these techniques are still so highly sought after because they go beyond the physical and attempt to address the individual’s overall needs. Today, traditional and modern methods meet at luxury spas across the city. Boasting eastern inf luences that hail from Thailand, Bali, the Philippines and Tibet, Concierge presents a selection of unique treatments that fuse five-star pampering with ancient wisdom.

A seamless mix of past meets present, CHI, The Spa is ideal for those on the hunt for a luxurious city retreat. Nestled within the plush surrounds of Shangri-La Hotel, Dubai, the spa aims to provide a tranquil space where the needs of each guest can be given special attention. This is especially evident in the spa’s choice of Asian Wellness massages, which includes the deep tissue Rescue Release, Oriental Thai Massage and the Asian Blend Massage. A leisurely two-hour treatment that combines several of these aspects is the Indulgence of Time spa journey. Blending Swedish, Shiatsu and reflexology techniques with powerful natural plant and herbal extracts, a skilled therapist starts the session with a stimulating massage that sends guests into a blissful state of relaxation. The latter half of the ritual then includes the spa’s popular Balancing Facial with a deep cleanse and soothing facial massage. Using a targeted bio-brightening face serum, this final step illuminates the skin and leaves the face looking and feeling totally refreshed.

Every single element of the ornate B/Attitude Spa, located in Grosvenor House Dubai, has been carefully crafted to evoke the tranquillity and spirituality of the east. Dark wood floors, black marble and imposing Oriental statues are contrasted by warm candlelight and fiery red hues. The menu is brimming with signature treatments infused with eastern influences. Designed especially for Dubai, try the Bushido Spa treatment – also known as ‘tiger roar from within’. Combining silk and bamboo elements, the 90-minute treatment takes its inspiration from ancient samurai stretching tecnhiques. The Tibetan Spa Ritual is another highlight. Promoting a sense of inner peace, this traditional treatment involves a steady stream of warm oil being gently poured onto the forehead. Running along the temples, scalp and down the hair, the trickling of the oil induces a state of relaxation. Round off your treatment with a dip in one of the temperature controlled mosaic pools or unwind in the lavish dark stone Jacuzzi.

Deriving much of its philosophy from nature’s ability to heal and nurture, it’s only fitting that the spa takes its name from the Thai word namm signifying ‘water’. As one would expect from the spa at leading Thai hotel brand Dusit Thani, Namm Spa holds dear the therapeutic teachings of its homeland. Truly feel yourself unwind with the twohour Thai Heritage Therapy. Using traditional remedies that have been passed down through the generations, the treatment aims to release negative energies and return equilibrium to the body. Throughout the session a skilled therapist will use a unique stretching technique, also known as the Hermit’s Body Twist, to revive tired muscles. The treatment also involves an aromatherapy massage using a special blend of oils that promotes detoxification before a pressure point massage restores body balance. Guests can also opt for the 30-minute Thai Herbal Steam water treatment, with aromatic steam to boost blood circulation and further detoxify the body.

Located in the heart of Dubai’s financial district, guests can find a calming haven within the luxury confines of The Ritz-Carlton Spa. Whether you’re after an express treatment to ease away work worries or a leisurely pampering session, this urban sanctuary combines firstclass facilities with traditional healing therapies. A prime example of this therapeutic fusion is the signature East Meets West ritual. Exclusive to the spa, the treatment was carefully crafted by the hotel’s global team of therapists. A unique blend of international influences, the tailored massage borrows techniques from Bali, Mexico, India and the Philippines. Also on the menu is an energy enhancing Thai massage. Renowned for its effective massaging strokes, the oil-free massage uses pressure, rocking and stretching to work out muscle ailments. Guests can also opt for the Hot Stones Melter add-on, which uses the ancient Chinese remedy of placing heated stones along key areas of the body to relieve deep-seated tension.

One of the region’s most important business hubs, Dubai International Financial Centre (DIFC) is perhaps an unlikely venue for culture. Yet over the years, a thriving art scene has blossomed beneath the skyscrapers. With its bold architectural design and cool urban vibe, the contemporary space of DIFC Gate Village is home to an increasing number of internationally renowned galleries and art businesses including prestigious auction house Christie’s. There’s also quirky cafés and a host of restaurants to try in this vibrant part of town. Drawing in scores of visitors to Gate Village, Opera Gallery is a must for modern and contemporary art enthusiasts. The Parisian founded gallery benefits from an incredible worldwide network and its Black Room houses a selection of modern masterpieces from artistic greats such as Auguste Renoir and Salvador Dali. Joining this slew of global names is a burgeoning collection of homegrown and regional galleries. Among those is The Empty Quarter, a Dubai-based exhibitor, co-founded by Saudi Arabian princess HRH Reem Al-Faisal and Emirati Safa Al-Hamed. The sophisticated space boasts a fantastic selection of fine art photography. Also eager to support talent from the Middle East is Ayyam Gallery. One of two locations in Dubai, the sleek DIFC studio recently showcased the solo work of Beirut-based Syrian artist Abdul Karim Majdal Al-Beik. In an effort to nurture its flourishing cultural scene, DIFC Gate Village has also launched popular community initiatives. Currently taking place twice a year, Art Nights sees the area come to life with pop-up art exhibitions, live music, film screenings and interactive workshops. Also adding to the lively locale, visitors will find a host of gourmet culinary picks, including Mediterranean favourite BOCA, Argentinian haunt Gaucho and fine-dining British eatery Wheeler’s of St. James’s. 6

RIGHT ANGLES ——— Dubai Creek Golf & Yacht Club gives a distinctive edge to the old town skyline

Jutting out over the water’s edge at Dubai Creek are the structured sails of a clubhouse that has come to define any view of the area. The work of British architect Brian Johnson, the building opened at Dubai Creek Golf & Yacht Club in 1993 and its roof detailing is intended to represent the crisp, white sails of the traditional Arabian dhow. An ode to the emirate’s long-held connection to the sea, the

now iconic building celebrates the fishermen and pearl divers who once earned their living in and around Dubai Creek. Its innovative design marks the perfect contrast between the traditional architecture that surrounds the historic waterway, and modern interpretations of Dubai. Not only is the clubhouse an important feature on the skyline here, but it takes pride of place on the 20 dirham note.

EXCELLENCE AS STANDARD ——— Jens Muenchenbach, executive chef at Waldorf Astoria Dubai Palm Jumeirah, brings his world-class culinary approach to the plush Palm Jumeirah property

As Dubai’s dining scene continues to mature, a number of first-class restaurants in the city are also contenders on the international culinary scene. Among the hotels reaching new heights with their gastronomic proposition is Waldorf Astoria Dubai Palm Jumeirah. Since opening on Palm Jumeirah in 2014, the iconic New York brand has brought with it the famed world-class service standards it is known for. At each one of the hotel’s six dining outlets the focus is, as you would expect, on exceeding expectations. Overseeing it all is executive chef Jens Muenchenbach, whose passion for offering an extraordinary experience shines through in the property’s amazing culinary creations. He says: “I’ve always had this curious and creative side. Growing up, I would watch my father cooking on special occasions and I remember being drawn to the kitchen. Once I was old enough, I joined in the cooking and it became a tradition for us to cook together. From there, I pursued a formal education.” After years spent cooking at some of the world’s most prestigious hotels, Muenchenbach joined the team at Waldorf Astoria Dubai Palm Jumeirah in 2013 as executive sous chef. He was soon promoted to his current role, which sees him take charge of the culinary direction throughout the hotel. “Together with my team I work on menu development for each of our restaurants, sourcing vendors that provide ingredients in line with our high culinary standards, and training and developing my team to consistently deliver the best dishes for our guests,” he says. “Our guests can always expect a high quality and honest approach. These days, people are more savvy with their food choices and want to know more about the food they consume. Knowing this, we have plans to develop our menus using high quality ingredients sourced locally with sustainability in mind. “I have always held myself to a high standard. Guest satisfaction is at the forefront of what I do and when I see people enjoying the food, it makes all the hard work worth it.” Maintaining such high standards is a serious undertaking at Waldorf, where its restaurants and lounges have made their mark on the city’s dining scene.

Mezzerie is the hotel’s main dining venue offering flavours from around the world, while LAO boasts a menu of delicious South East Asian dishes. Social by Heinz Beck, under the tutelage of the Michelin-star chef, is Italian finedining at its very best. While Peacock Alley is the place to go for a sumptuous afternoon tea. Elsewhere, Palm Avenue and Serafina Bar offer plush spaces to unwind with light bites and drinks. For Muenchenbach, ensuring an enticing offering at each one of the outlets comes down to the strength of his team. He says: “A large part of my inspiration comes from my team, they are constantly bringing me new ideas and dishes. Learning from other chefs and adopting new cooking techniques also helps me formulate new ideas.” Some of the favourite dishes amongst Dubai diners so far include Heinz Beck’s signature fagottelli carbonara, a fresh take on the classic which sees hot pools of sauce encased within fresh pasta parcels. The tasty Vietnamese Pho served at LAO is full of flavour and also a stand-out dish. As for Muenchenbach’s own favourites, he says: “Most chefs will admit that it’s difficult to name a favourite as you take great care perfecting each dish. If I had to name a couple, the foie gras hot dogs we serve at the Waldorf Astoria Brunch are exceptional. Also, the ricotta pancakes with white chocolate and homemade blueberry jam at Palm Avenue are sublime.” Looking to the future of the culinary offering at the hotel, Muenchenbach and his team have some ambitious plans based on a sustainable approach. He says: “In the coming year we plan on having our own organic garden, beehives for our own organic honey and a composting initiative to turn our biodegradable waste into fertilised soil that we will in turn use in our gardens. “Currently, there are better products available to work with that are locally sourced. I think it’s a sign that customers are becoming more quality conscious and demanding more honesty and transparency when it comes to the food they eat.” To book a table at one of the restaurants at Waldorf Astoria Dubai Palm Jumeirah, visit waldorfastoria3.hilton.com

Boasting an impressive portfolio of 26 restaurants across 10 countries worldwide, three-starred Michelin chef Jean-Georges Vongerichten clearly has the recipe for success. And cool New York inspired venue JG Kitchen at Four Seasons Resort Dubai at Jumeirah Beach is no exception. Spacious and airy, light wood fixtures give the venue a lovely, laid-back feel. On the weekend brunch feel like a true New Yorker, leisurely nibbling late morning treats of buttermilk pancakes, Maine lobster grilled cheese on brioche and perfectly cooked shakshuka eggs, complemented by sparkling Bellinis in exotic varieties of passion chilli and raspberry lychee. Championing seasonal produce and international influences, the dinner offerings are just as enticing. Think snapper ceviche, seared scallops, black truffle pizza and caramelised lamb chops. Make your way to the JG Terrace for a host of after-dark themes. From ladies nights to gentlemen’s evenings, this attractive al fresco area is set to be one of the most ambient terraces in town. Also here is JG Dining Room, a stand-out option for an unforgettable meal.

A foodie trend that’s been steadily gaining traction the world over, the vibrant flavours of Peru have now well and truly registered on the radar of every passionate gourmand. And Inka Restaurant & Lounge, located in Sofitel Dubai Downtown is the latest venue to capitalise on this exciting culinary craze. Keeping it authentic, the menu has been carefully crafted by head chef Christian Motte. Raised in Peru, Motte puts a modern spin on signature dishes. Think aromatic plantain wrapped smoked sea bream and grilled octopus served over quinoa risotto with squid ink and white truffle oil. While the eclectic mains certainly prove tempting, the menu also offers several smaller dishes that highlight the brilliance of Peruvian cooking. There’s freshly prepared ceviche cured in an authentic citrus marinade called tiger’s milk, a selection of tiraditos, like Inka’s gorgeous salmon sashimi with salsa criolla and pomegranate, and succulent skewers of chicken, beef and grilled octopus also known as anticuchos. After dinner, saunter over to Inka’s sleek art-deco lounge area and enjoy zesty cocktails and sweeping views of Downtown Dubai and Burj Khalifa.

VESNA

—— One of Dubai’s more recent arrivals, Vesna at Conrad Dubai, certainly brings something unique to the table as it takes a fine-dining approach to Slavic cuisine. Drawing inspiration from across Eastern Europe, the menu is a melting pot of f lavours and influences with starters and soups including teschin yazik, aubergine caviar with Georgian spices and speciality borsch with a pinch of Indian spices to give it a contemporary twist. The mains are as you’d expect, rich, hearty and full of f lavour. From the slow-cooked sturgeon fillet with horseradish and beetroot sauce, to the black Angus beef stroganoff and chakhokhbili – a Georgian lamb favourite – diners can expect robust dishes presented in an impressively sophisticated manner. Dreamy desserts of honey cake, crêpes and an oh-so-pretty pavlova aren’t to be overlooked either. The venue itself presents an interesting contrast of exposed brickwork and grand chandeliers with plush dining chairs. While the strains of live music from Vesna’s on-site pianist and vocalist seal the deal for an elegant evening out.

Hailing from London’s posh Mayfair neighbourhood, culinary export Novikov Restaurant & Bar at Sheraton Grand Hotel Dubai is a perfect fit for Dubai’s glam gourmet set. The interiors feature cracked stone and cool granite walls housing dark wood and leather fixtures, while the menu is filled with trendy Asian offerings of dim sum, sushi, tempura and grilled delights all vying for attention. Along with the artfully presented whole lobster tempura and scallop and black truffle ‘new style sashimi’, menu highlights include Novikov’s famed black cod, king crab leg wasabi gratin and the impressive Peking duck. The Seafood Market counter, in front of the open kitchen, is undoubtedly one of the restaurant’s key features. Here diners can take their pick from a display of whole premium fish flown in every second day from Portugal. As a venue eager to impress, the addition of Novikov’s swanky bar area, well stocked with fine Champagne and top shelf spirits, will no doubt please revellers looking to make a night of it. 14

—— STILET TO DREA MS

Level Shoe District at The Dubai Mall is our guilty pleasure. The world’s largest luxury shoe store boasts over 300 designers that cover designer, contemporary and men’s footwear. We love the Level Shoe District’s Trend department for its fresh new designs and always stop by Sole Lounge by Margaret Dabbs to pamper our feet. Aside from Level Shoe District, some of the best names in fashion can be found at The Dubai Mall as well as some of the city’s most popular attractions including Dubai Aquarium & Underwater Zoo, while recordbreaking Burj Khalifa and The Dubai Fountain are just outside. Open from 10am to 10pm Sunday to Wednesday, 10am to midnight Thursday to Saturday. Visit: myco.ae/dubaimall

There aren’t many malls in the world that boast their own ski slope – that honour goes to Mall of the Emirates in Barsha. We’ve already mastered the slopes at Ski Dubai and have now taken up zorbing in the cool space. To thaw out, enjoy some retail therapy at the mall which boasts more than 560 international brands and a host of exceptional dining options. Open from 10am to 10pm Sunday to Wednesday, 10am to midnight Thursday to Saturday. Visit: myco.ae/moe DESIGNER CHARM

Driven by his love of Persian poetry, Iranian artist Abbas Saberi crafts storytelling art at his Swan Palace workshop in Souk Khan Murjan. Combining multiple techniques, he painstakingly creates extraordinary scenes that are embossed, engraved and painted on copper and aluminium sheets. They are then embellished with semi-precious gems. Swan Palace is open from 10am to 10pm Sunday to Wednesday, 10am to midnight Thursday to Saturday. Visit: myco.ae/khanmurjan

If you’re hunting for the perfect gift or a souvenir to take back home, an exquisite piece of Arabic calligraphy is the perfect choice and involves script written in decorative handwriting. We recommend visiting master calligrapher Amir Hossein Golshani’s boutique, Golden Pen, which is located in Souk Khan Murjan at Wafi mall. The boutique boasts an array of charming artwork so you can pick up ready-made pieces or, if you have the time, customise a design as a bespoke reminder of your time in the city. We love shopping for colourful pashmina scarves at Souk Madinat Jumeirah. If you’re nervous about quality and authenticity, this plush modern souk is one of the best places to visit in Dubai. There are a number of retailers here including Al Jaber Gallery and Pride of Kashmir where the staff are knowledgeable when it comes to the quality and craftsmanship of handwoven pieces. The name pashmina originates from the Persian word meaning ‘made from wool’. Stores open daily from 10am until 11pm. Visit: myco.ae/madinat

Those in search of a true taste of Arabia need look no further than Café Bateel, a charming boutique offering an array of gourmet dates. Café Bateel allows visitors to immerse in local culture by discovering over 20 varieties of sticky, sweet dates, all grown in Saudi Arabia. Each lavish variety is neatly stacked in impressive pyramids behind a glass counter alongside sumptuous chocolate-covered confectionaries. There are several Café Bateel outlets across the city and we recommend you drop by to try their innovative date-infused drinks and selection of desserts with a twist such as opera cake made with date cream. The family-run firm has been in operation for decades, and has grown from humble beginnings on the banks of Dubai Creek to become one of the biggest purveyors of premium watch brands. As one of the region’s most established and trusted timepiece purveyors, only the most exclusive names can be found here. With boutiques across the city including at The Dubai Mall and Mall of the Emirates, each boasts an impressive selection including Rolex, Audemars Piguet, Baume & Mercier, A. AL ZAIN

RIVOLI

We love Al Zain for its wonderful blend of traditional and contemporary styles. The Bahraini jeweller’s main collections include Natural Pearls, Bridal, Bronze and High Jewellery, while there are also limited-edition pieces available. Natural Pearls is arguably the most striking of the collections, and each piece contains precious Bahraini pearls. The jeweller is steeped in tradition, and has its roots in the pearl trade of the 1930’s. The family-run business has gone from strength to strength since then with stores across the Middle East, and of course, in Dubai with a presence that includes a boutique at Mall of the Emirates.

This is the place to come for premium accessories, from watches and eyewear to leather goods and writing instruments. There are more than 380 stores in the region, and of course plenty peppered across Dubai, meaning there is ample opportunity to pop in and browse the hundreds of international brands under Rivoli’s umbrella. You’ll be spoiled for choice here with an array of must-have pieces from brands such as Omega, Longines, Rado, Gucci, Tissot and Montblanc. For an even more exclusive experience, The R Lounge at The H Hotel Dubai, caters to Rivoli’s VIP clientele with bespoke collections in a plush space.

We love shopping at Damas where you’ll find collections from some of the most prestigious jewellery houses. Whether you’re in the mood for something that sparkles from Graff Diamonds, a heritage feel with an exquisite piece from Fabergé or a Roberto Coin design straight from the red carpet, there is something to suit all tastes. Established in 1907, from the start Damas was known for exceptional craftsmanship. Twenty years after opening its first store in the Gold Souk in 1959, Damas has become one of the region’s biggest jewellery brands. Its network spans 300 stores throughout the Gulf, across Qatar, Oman, Bahrain, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, and of course throughout Dubai.

Undoubtedly one of the best ways to garner a better appreciation for the region’s culture is with an expertly guided tour – which is why we consider a visit to Sheikh Mohammed Centre for Cultural Understanding (SMCCU) an absolute must. CRUISE THE CREEK

It was along the buzzing banks of Dubai Creek that the city’s enchanting story began. Reminiscent of the region’s rich seafaring past, today, traditional wooden boats, or dhows as they are known, continue to command the waterways as they ply their trade. While a bustle of daytime trade is an experience not to be missed, we also recommend taking in the area’s glorious evening views. Tour Dubai offers a buffet dinner cruise that completes a round trip along the creek’s brightly lit banks and illuminated architecture. Enjoy the sights and fantastic fare for AED250 per person. Visit: myco.ae/dhowcruise

One of the best ways to truly appreciate the contrasts of this dynamic city is from the air, which is why we love nothing more than taking to the skies with Helidubai. Hop into one of their luxurious helicopters and take in the sights in style and comfort. For a glimpse at the emirate’s rich past, we suggest the Heritage Tour. Taking off from the waterfront of Dubai Festival City, you’ll hover above the city’s oldest and most charming districts, including Dubai Creek and Al Fahidi Historical Neighbourhood. Witness the hustle and bustle of this captivating waterside locale before whizzing past some of Dubai’s most recognisable skyscrapers, lush green golf courses and the gently lapping waters of the Arabian Gulf. ASK THE CONCIERGE

Zain Naseer Tuan, assistant chief concierge at Palazzo Versace Dubai, gives his retail recommendations as Dubai Shopping Festival (DSF) gets underway this month

1

Dubai is without doubt one of the best places in the world to shop, and this month’s DSF means there is even more to explore. For high-fashion brands, The Dubai Mall is of course the best. As the biggest shopping mall in the world, it has all of the top-end designer labels under one roof. There’s more than 1,200 stores, and for those who love designer shoes, I strongly recommend a visit to Level Shoe District in the mall. It’s an area dedicated entirely to shoes, with everything from Prada to Vans. Mall of the Emirates is also an excellent shopping destination. It’s fresh from a major expansion, and there is a fantastic selection of high-end brands such as Versace, Chanel, Bulgari and Burberry, to name a few. There’s also plenty of entertainment and after a long day of shopping why not enjoy a session on the ski slopes? For somewhere a little bit different, CityWalk is a great shopping destination. It’s an al fresco shopping space in a trendy part of town where you’ll find nice boutiques, local fashion designers and a great selection of restaurants

“THERE’S MORE THAN 1,200 STORES AND FOR THOSE WHO LOVE DESIGNER SHOES, I STRONGLY RECOMMEND A VISIT TO LEVEL SHOE DISTRICT IN THE M ALL”

1 Level Shoe District, The Dubai Mall 2 Ski Dubai, Mall of the Emirates 3 Souk Khan Murjan, Wafi mall

and cafés. It’s the perfect place for a walk, a leisurely coffee and an amazing shopping day. Dubai is known for its fashionable people. So why not hire a personal shopper to help you find that dream dress or exclusive watch? From shopping to Champagne, there is a host of personal shopping experiences in the city. For jewellery aficionados, the Gold and Diamond Park is a great day out where there is a large variety of shops offering endless choice. If it’s high-end watches you’re looking for, head to The Dubai Mall where you’ll find the world’s finest timepiece brands. Besides its enormous array of malls and shops, Dubai also allows shoppers to travel the world with some interesting retail concepts. Wafi mall is designed around an Egyptian theme where you’ll find yourself shopping amongst the ancient pharaohs and replicas of the famous pyramids. At Mercato Mall, you can explore stunning Italian-inspired architecture with cobbled-style streets. At Ibn Battuta Mall, follow in the footsteps of the famed Arab traveller Ibn Battuta. Each section of the mall is themed around a country he visited, from China to India and Egypt. It’s an educational experience, as well as a great place to shop. For me, however, Dubai’s best kept shopping secret is Souk Khan Murjan, hidden away beneath Wafi mall. The souk is a real gem for those looking for traditional wares. After a busy day shopping, Dubai has an excellent selection of restaurants. In and around The Dubai Mall, there is a great variety to choose from, most of which offer spectacular views of The Dubai Fountain. Or, for something completely different, try Enigma at Palazzo Versace Dubai where the concept and chef changes every three months.
