WELCOME ——

As a visitor and guest in Abu Dhabi you are staying in a destination of distinction, which I hope you will find so engaging and exciting that you return time and time again. We in the UAE capital believe our homeland is something of a welcome contradiction for travellers. It is a place where deep-rooted Arabian heritage is deftly woven into a rich destination tapestry complete with luxury accommodation and world-class leisure attractions. Abu Dhabi is blessed with a diverse landscape. We have 400 kilometres of pristine coastline, over 200 natural islands, vast tracts of serene desert, tranquil oasis towns and a vibrant, cosmopolitan capital city. I hope during your stay you are able to experience as much of this variety as possible. In many ways, this emirate is several destinations in one, from the rustic charm of Al Ain, the birthplace of the country’s founding father, Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, and the breathtaking vastness of the Liwa Desert in Al Gharbia with its mountainous dunes, to the energising pace and brightness of our capital city. We all share a desire to make you feel as welcome as possible and hope you leave with a positive, lasting impression of our homeland, traditions and people. In the pages of this magazine, you will find an overview of the emirate’s widespread appeal and I’m sure you will find much to inspire and entertain you. I wish you a relaxing, enjoyable and memorable stay in Abu Dhabi.

—— With a sophisticated and refined design, two new Montblanc timepieces enhance the Bohème Collection. Echoing the distinctive Bohème design codes, the Moongarden and Day and Night timepieces offer simple lines, elegant cases with slightly curved horns and floral Arabic numerals. Mirroring the radiance, self-confidence and independence of the contemporary Bohème lady, the design aesthetic is matched by the highly functional attributes of the watch’s complication. In a sophisticated integration of the moonphase, the Moongarden timepiece (pictured) offers the name of each month’s full moon, instead of the traditional name of the month, displayed in a crescent shape window in the centre while the moonphases appear in an aperture at 6 o’clock. BOUTIQUE CHARM ——— As the capital’s retail scene diversifies, there are many niche boutiques just waiting to enhance your shopping experience Words by Catherine Langley

There’s no shortage of shopping malls and department stores in Abu Dhabi, but while these retail utopias offer variety and choice, there’s also a wealth of hidden gems for shoppers who prefer niche labels, exclusive pieces and a more personal retail experience. These boutique stores are of course well known to local fashion lovers, but if you’re visiting the capital, you might unwittingly pass them by. To make sure that doesn’t happen, we’ve scoured the city to find the best boutiques for you to visit during your stay. FE AT H E RS FA S H I O N

—— Tucked away on the first floor of Dalma Mall you’ll find Feathers Fashion, a high-end accessories boutique specialising in fine jewellery, wallets, pens and handbags. The brainchild of Emirati entrepreneur Khalid Basaeed, Feathers Fashion is the first ever homegrown luxury goods brand and it has taken the UAE shopping scene by storm. “The concept behind Feathers Fashion is to reflect the culture of the UAE. The heart of the brand is local, from the raw materials we use, such as camel leather, to the Arabian pattern designs,” explains Basaeed, who originally studied architecture before a love of product design led him to open the first Feathers store in 2010. The brand, which Basaeed likens to international players such as Carolina Herrera and Aigner, is a fantastic find for visitors who are after something exclusive. “Our products make wonderful gifts and mementos, because you won’t find

these pieces anywhere else in the world,” explains Basaeed. One such item is a special-edition Swiss watch, which was designed to commemorate the late UAE president HH Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan and features an engraved silhouette of his face on its dial. As one of the stores best selling items, buyers are often required to go on a waiting list, which only adds to the air of exclusivity. Other popular pieces are the camel leather wallets, pearl jewellery, which has strong regional significance, and accessories such as charm bracelets bearing traditional Arabian coffee pots. While Feathers Fashion prides itself on being an exclusive local brand, Basaeed has plans in the future to open more stores in other Gulf countries over the next few years before going international. “We’re a local brand with ambitions to go global. Hopefully, over the next decade, we can establish ourselves in the fashion capitals of the world and perhaps one day sell our products in London, Milan and Paris.” L A R AGS

—— A labour of love is perhaps the best way to describe multi-brand boutique, LA Rags at Al Seef Village Mall on Salam Street. The California-inspired fashion store, which started life in the living room of part-time designer and personal shopper Salma Saad, was originally called Mirabelle Boutique, but was re-branded last year when the store moved premises and introduced menswear to its range. Despite the change in location, this chic concept

retains all the intimacy and exclusivity of the original shop that garnered Saad a faithful following. “When I decided to open LA Rags in Abu Dhabi, I knew it needed to have the warmth and cosiness of my home, so we used vintage materials and natural woods throughout the interiors. Ultimately I want my customers to experience the personal touch when they visit us.” That personal touch is exactly what sets LA Rags apart from so many other boutiques that are present in the emirate. “We have a seating area at the back of the store where I get to know my customers. I then make it my mission for them to walk out with that one piece that makes them feel good. I like the challenge of it all and the best part of it is that my customers then become part of the LA Rags family,” explains Saad. The boutique stocks everything from floaty maxi dresses to shoes, swimwear and accessories, and Saad travels far and wide to acquire her carefully curated selection. “I go to a lot of the big fashion trade shows in NewYork, Las Vegas, LA, Milan and Berlin. There is something for everyone and we cater for customers who are seven years old, right up to 50.” While Saad acknowledges that LA Rags is one among a growing legion of boutiques in Abu Dhabi, she believes that the approachable and individual feel of her store makes it one of a kind. “Our customers come back because they enjoy the extra interaction I have with them. There is nothing like allowing yourself to get to know someone and making them feel so good with what they wear that they want to come back for more.”

MOSAIQUE CURRENTLY STOCKS MORE THAN 20 ELEGANT DESIGNERS FROM AS FAR AS THE US AND THAIL AND, AND M ANY PL ACES IN BET WEEN, M AKING IT VERY MUCH AN EAST MEETS WEST STORY

M OS A I Q U E

—— Home décor enthusiasts will be in heaven at Mosaique, a high-end boutique at Nation Galleria. With an eclectic choice of accessories and furniture, everything in the store has been carefully selected by owner and creative director, Lama QaddumiShahin. “Whether visitors are looking for alternative gift ideas, an original mix of home accessories, interesting art or interior design consultations, Mosaique specialises in the unique.” As an interior designer who has always been passionate about beautiful furniture and accessories, Qaddumi-Shahin opened Mosaique two years ago when she moved to the UAE capital and was after one-of-a-kind pieces for her home. “That is where the idea of having a concept boutique began,” she recalls. Since then the store has grown to become one of the highlights of the Abu Dhabi home-fashion scene and it’s not difficult to see why. With pieces from all over the world, Mosaique currently stocks more than 20 elegant designers from as far as the US and Thailand, and many places in between, making it very much an east meets west story. “A large majority of our pieces are handmade, some are limited edition and we have a few designers who are exclusive to Mosaique in Abu Dhabi.”

On top of all this, Mosaique offers customers a retail experience like no other. “Upon visiting us at Mosaique, customers always receive a warm welcome. It’s like Aladdin’s Cave in that you never know what you will find the next time you visit. So it’s always exciting and definitely a surprise when people come to see us.” MINBART

—— The first of its kind in Abu Dhabi, Minbart is a boutique and gallery at Al Raha Beach that acts as a creative platform for artists and designers to display their pieces. “There are lots of creative communities around and they were lacking a platform to showcase their work – hence the idea for Minbart was born,” says founder and owner, Sheikha Alia Al Qassimi. Al Qassimi first conceptualised Minbart – which is a play on the Arabic word ‘minbar’ that means ‘platform’ and ‘art’ – 10 years ago, but it wasn’t until April 2014 that it became a reality. The store’s inaugural theme of ‘Keep Tribal Simple’ received rave reviews and explored the idea of uniting designers from around the world. “It involved designers from Brooklyn to London, Istanbul and beyond, as well as interpreting fashion

trends, sourcing unique talents and forming this into collection themes,” explains Al Qassimi. Since then the store has collaborated with a number of local, regional and international designers and now stocks an upbeat collection of fashion pieces, artworks and furniture items. “We take an interest in designers that have unique background stories. Whether they are international brands that are rare in the region, or homegrown names that have something different to offer,” explains Al Qassimi. This is certainly evident from Minbart’s current selection, which includes pieces from British label Bionda Castana, Tibi from New York and Toga Pulla from Japan. There have also been collaborations with local label No/3, Kuwaiti designer By Nouma and Saudi designer Nasiba Hafiz, to create a collection that is exclusively made for and sold by Minbart. Infused with Al Qassimi’s innate flair and style, everything about Minbart, from the minimalist interior, to the rails adorned with inventive fashion, is exceptional. “Ultimately, we’re all about capturing, educating and investing in today’s modern discoverer. The bottom line is that we sell stories and consider Minbart to be the perfect space for creatives to showcase their work.”

In 1906, Van Cleef & Arpels was one of the first jewellers to boast an address at the prestigious Place Vendôme in Paris, France. The moment marked an important first step for the Maison and has led to a legacy that has lasted over a century.

Van Cleef & Arpels is a name synonymous with luxury. Combining exceptional craftsmanship with technical innovation across its creations, the French Maison’s legacy has triumphed for over a century. One of the most celebrated values of the Maison is its commitment to artistic excellence, an element which will proudly be on display at the Poetry of Time exhibition, hosted at The Dubai Mall from February 8 to 20. Since the beginning, the Maison’s talented artisans have strived to craft distinctive designs that defy time and tell extraordinary tales, much like the one that brought the brand to life. Towards the end of the 19th century, Estelle Arpels – the daughter of a dealer in precious stones – met Alfred Van Cleef, the son of a stone cutter. It was the start of a love story like no other and in 1895 they married. Their

passion for precious stones and desire to create a lasting legacy led them to establish the Maison of Van Cleef & Arpels. Over the years that followed, they succeeded in making Van Cleef & Arpels one of the most respected jewellers in the world. A celebrated spirit of creation became the essence of artistic and bejewelled timepieces made by the Maison throughout the 1920s, a period when watches were considered essential accessories that served a functional purpose. Van Cleef & Arpels took its first steps into the world of watchmaking by going against the grain and transforming timepieces into luxurious pieces of artistic jewellery. In 1935 Van Cleef & Arpels crafted a wrist watch that effortlessly combined beauty and functionality. The Cadenas, or ‘lock’ in French, was meant to reflect a sacred union and was thought to

be originally inspired by the Duchess of Windsor. Within a few years the Cadenas watch was given an elegant update – designed as an exquisite bracelet, the timepiece contained a dial that only its wearer could see. Recently the Maison refreshed the classic piece, incorporating an enlarged white mother-ofpearl dial for increased visibility and 12 hour markers. Available in nine different versions, including a variety of straps, stones and metals, the Cadenas is a jewel of a timepiece thanks to its unique design. This eye for clever aesthetics is reflected in all of Van Cleef & Arpels’ elegant timepiece collections, especially in the Extraordinary Dials range where every watch dial is designed like a painting. Inspired by miniature art, which was popular between the 16th and 18th centuries, miniature painting is a skill that only a few craftsmen have mastered over the

For over a century, Van Cleef & Arpels has been combining unparalleled craftsmanship, technical prowess and innovation to create truly iconic timepieces. At the Maison, talented artisans use traditional skills and techniques that have been passed down for generations to work on delicate materials and precious metals and stones.

years. Van Cleef & Arpels often uses this technique on mother-of-pearl as well as gold. The miniaturist needs to be a talented painter in order to compose the original design freehand, using a rich tapestry of colours and a very fine stable brush. The design is sketched using a binocular microscope, before the dial is heated for an hour at 80°C to dry this preliminary version. More and more layers of paint are then added – each calling for additional firing – to create a work of art that reflects every detail and nuance of the original design. Lapidaries, enamellers, engravers and stonesetters also use many time-honoured traditions and skills to further embellish the dials. This year Van Cleef & Arpels shines a spotlight on miniature feather art, which is evident in recent creations such as the Lady Arpels Colibri Indigo Extraordinary

Dials Collection watch that brilliantly ref lects the wonder and colours of nature. The technique involves the maître d’art choosing the perfect bird’s feather and then using sections where colours are the most vibrant. These are then carefully smoothed, stuck down and trimmed to the desired design. It’s an incredibly delicate process that has been perfected with help from Nelly Saunier, a renowned French feather artist. The Maison’s attention to detail extends beyond just aesthetics. Beneath every decorated dial lies the timepiece’s beating heart. Several innovative movements bring Van Cleef & Arpels collections to life, including the Quantième de Saison movement that was developed in-house. The intricate and complex movement reveals the elements that make up the back of the dial and allows time to

be structured in line with the seasons. At Salon International de la Haute Horlogerie (SIHH) last month, Van Cleef & Arpels recreated the ethereal lightness of nature with a brand new movement in the stunning Lady Arpels Ronde des Papillons Poetic Complications watch. The timepiece features a self-winding mechanical movement with a jumping retrograde hour, variable speed minutes and on-demand animation module. The vibrant 13-second animation, visible on the dial, features three colourful butterflies in an aerial to-and-fro as they dance around clouds. It is this coming together of different crafts and avant-garde creativity that makes Van Cleef & Arpels shine in the world of watchmaking. The Maison’s legacy is reflected in every creation, evoking a sense of dreamy emotion and timeless appeal.

STYLE QUEEN ——— Emirati designer Lamya Abedin is pioneering a modern take on the abaya

Geometric prints, bold colours and edgy fabrics are not traditionally associated with the abaya, a garment often viewed as more functional than fashionable. On the whole, attempts to add to the aesthetic have centred on subtle touches and enhanced detailing – that is until Lamya Abedin came along. The Emirati designer has brought a fresh creative approach with abaya designs that have succeeded in making a serious fashion statement. Since the launch of her label Queen of Spades in 2008, Abedin’s creations have been worn by a steady stream of A-listers, and are in high demand around the world. Her work has been snapped up by major retailers and exclusive boutiques where the city’s fashion elite vie for the unique styles.

“It all began in 2008, I was searching for an abaya for myself and I just could not find a one-of-a-kind piece. I have a real love for fashion, styling and creative design, so it seemed to me I should explore that calling and started making abayas for myself. It all grew from there. My family’s support, as well as encouragement from friends, were the final elements that got me to where I am today,” says self-taught Abedin. Influences from all over the world can be seen in the designer’s work, which combines various cultural cues. There are abayas which can be worn during the day in bright colour palettes, crafted from lightweight fabrics with tassels and intricate patterns. Others are perfect for a special occasion and come in stunning blacks and golds with dramatic detailing and glittering needlework. “Abayas have evolved and have been redefined to not only suit the Emirati woman, but women of all nationalities and all cultural backgrounds. It has become an admired garment, and is becoming a staple in the wardrobes of many women. “My belief is that a designer is someone who brings style into life, so I always look for ways of making the everyday extraordinary through my designs,” Abedin says. While the abaya’s role in Middle Eastern society features prominently in her work, Abedin is far from limited by traditional notions in her creative process. Influences come from all walks of life to give designs a truly global feel. “I have taken inspiration from folk dancers in Mexico and the spring ceremonies of the Japanese Cherry Blossom season. At other times, I’ll look a little closer to home and find myself intrigued by my son’s car collections or my daughter’s bedtime stories.” She adds: “I love sourcing materials and drawing inspiration from all around the world. I believe

every country holds treasures, and depending on the theme, mood board or vision I’m working on, I start collecting my textiles to produce the collection I want the world to see. I also feel this helps my collections reach out to fashion-loving women, no matter where in the world they are.” The designer has an impressive roster of clients and A-list collaborations under her belt, from Lady Gaga and Tory Burch, to Rolls Royce. She is keen to build on that reach to ensure the abaya appeals to women everywhere. “In a deck of cards, the Queen of Spades is regarded as powerful. So as the name of my label suggests, I make each and every piece fit for a queen. My clients could be socialites, the girl next door, a mother, an entrepreneur, a travel enthusiast or a trend setter. She is a woman who always strives to be a pioneer and distinguishable in a crowd of fashionistas,” says Abedin. At the heart of each piece she crafts, Abedin blends contemporary influences with a sense of history and culture. Her hope is that the abaya is soon taken seriously in fashion circles. She says: “My designs are all about living up to the richness of our tradition in a contemporary world. I want to tell the world that our national dress is as fashionable as any runway trend, without compromising our culture.”

NATIONAL TREASURE ——— Efforts are underway to revive Arabia’s historic pearling trade

Long before the discovery of oil, pearls were an important source of wealth for the people of the United Arab Emirates. During the 18th and early 19th centuries, pearl divers would sail for four months at a time, working from sunrise to sunset, scouring the depths of the Gulf waters for this natural treasure. It was a very dangerous practice and diving equipment at the time was rudimentary. Divers had to take to the waters with just a nose clip, or fetam, fashioned from goat or gazelle horns and hold their breath to search for pearl oysters on the seabed. Their only lifeline back to the boat was a rope that would be used to haul the divers back to the surface. Pearling in the UAE died out in the early 1930s when the introduction of Japanese cultured pearls changed the face of the industry. Fortunately, the UAE’s rich pearling heritage is now undergoing a revival thanks to the efforts of RAK Pearls Holding that operates a dedicated pearl farm in the emirate of Ras Al Khaimah. “The project started in 2004 when my brother and I explored the feasibility of making pearls in the Arabian waters. The question was very simple – if this region was the most important for producing natural pearls why not bring it back again using modern technology,” explains Mohamed Al Suwaidi from RAK Pearl Holdings. Following the Japanese method of pearl culturing, a small mother of pearl bead is implanted into the oyster along with a tiny sliver of mantle tissue from another pearl. This then forms the nucleus around which the oyster naturally secretes layer after layer of nacre, the substance that forms the pearl. The pearl farm uses local pinctada radiata oysters, found wild in the waters of Ras Al Khaimah and across the Gulf region. Comparisons to Japan, regarded as the cultured pearl capital of the world, are to be expected but

Al Suwaidi reveals that there are inherent differences in quality and production. In Japan, oysters are no longer produced naturally and are instead prepared in labs but remain quite weak in comparison. The nutrient-rich mangrove ecosystem in Ras Al Khaimah presents an ideal environment for producing cultured pearls where oysters produce layers of coating three times faster. Pearls produced here can also reach 12mm in size while in Japan the average size remains about 8mm. In the past, hundreds of oysters were collected in the Gulf waters in the hope of finding a few natural pearls. Now, through exacting pearl culturing methods, the pearl farm in Ras Al Khaimah witnesses an average success rate of 65 to 80 percent for the entire harvest of about 40,000 oysters. “The best quality of pearls are used in jewellery, while others are kept for accessories and souvenirs. The rest can be crushed and grinded and used for medicine or cosmetics. Nothing goes to waste – the meat is used in restaurants and the shell itself can be polished to create mother of pearl,” says Al Suwaidi. Implanted oysters are carefully nurtured for around six to eight months on average before they are opened. Free from artificial bleaching and colouring, pearls produced in Ras Al Khaimah are of varied sizes, shapes and colours but each reflect a lustrous shine. An expert team, that combines the talents of people from Japan, Europe and the Arab world, ensures that the right days are chosen to harvest. “Oysters can grow for a year but if you choose the wrong day, you can end up with a dull shine or pearls with blemishes. We harvest in winter because summer heat makes the oyster produce more mother of pearl but cold water polishes it so that there’s high lustre. The secret lies in managing this process. At the end of the day, you are dealing with natural species so you have to be alert 24/7,” reveals Al Suwaidi.

These cultured Arabian pearls have already been used in exclusive jewellery pieces in collaboration with international brands, including British designer Stephen Webster and luxury watch and jewellery firm Mouawad. There’s been growing interest from around the world but Al Suwaidi insists that it’s about quality and not quantity. “We produce 40,000 pearls at the moment which is very little when compared to other markets like China that produce thousands of tonnes a year. Right now we want to raise awareness that there’s a new type of pearl in the market that has the same characteristics of the old Arabian pearl. Historically, our pearls were known for their lustre and colours and we want to retain that,” says Al Suwaidi. The hope is that Arabian pearls will once again be held in high regard around the world. “For us, pearls aren’t products – they are our history and culture. In my grandfather’s time, pearls were precious. It was what he lived on and, unfortunately today, people forget this. We are working on having pearl farms in Qatar, Saudi Arabia and Oman in the future with our know-how and through collaborations. Our dream is to revive the industry back to its glory days and be one of the most important producers of pearls.”

Myconcierge members can book the Abu Dhabi Pearl Journey to discover more about the UAE’s pearling past. Guests sail on an authentic jalboot – a traditional pearling boat – and enjoy Arabian hospitality as they try their hand at opening oysters. Any pearls found can be kept as a precious souvenir. A much-loved part of the city, Al Mushrif has been enjoying a recent revival that’s in many ways thanks to the revamp of Mushrif Central Park. One of the oldest parks in the capital, the grounds, which were first opened to the public in 1982, saw a massive two-year redevelopment begin in 2013. Proving even more popular since its reopening, the new space offers plenty for the whole family to enjoy. For the little ones a visit to the Animal Barn is a definite highlight. Working with Emirates Park Zoo, the barn houses different animals all through the year, and can include everything from goats, cows and donkeys to ponies and camels. There’s also the Children’s Garden, an interactive play area that boasts a lovely little wadi stream. The lush manicured lawns are also home to a botanical garden and the Shade House – brimming with a glorious assortment of indigenous plants. This cooler, semi-sheltered space is perfect for a leisurely stroll on a sunny afternoon. Not far from the Mushrif Central Park visitors will also find Al Mushrif Palace, a grand venue that is often used by the royal family for special occasions. For those keen to explore the region’s cultural creativity, pop by the Women’s Handicraft Centre where you’ll discover a showcase of local arts and crafts. Watch skilled Emirati women weaving textiles, crafting colourful baskets and working on embroidery and silver-thread needlework creations. Don’t miss the opportunity to pick up a unique souvenir from the in-house store. For a more contemporary shopping experience, however, head over to Mushrif Mall, which offers a mix of high-street retail, niche Arabic fashion boutiques, fragrant oudh scents and quirky souvenir kiosks. After a long day out exploring, enjoy refreshing sundowners and a gourmet dinner at 18 Degrees in the nearby Hyatt Capital Gate Abu Dhabi hotel.

DATE WITH HISTORY ——— Discover the UAE’s culture at the Qasr Al Hosn festival this month

Qasr Al Hosn was the first permanent structure to be built in the capital and began life in the 1760s as a coral and sea stone watchtower that overlooked the sea. Over time the Bani Yas tribe moved to the coast and Sheikh Shakhbut Bin Dhiyab, who ruled Abu Dhabi from 1795 until 1816, transformed the watchtower into a fort. The Qasr Al Hosn fort went on to become the epicentre for the emirate’s admirable growth

and transformation. Today the UAE capital is a modern metropolis that attracts millions of visitors each year. From February 3 to 13, the emirate will host the annual Qasr Al Hosn festival that celebrates Emirati culture and tradition in the setting of this historic fort. The event features a host of exhibitions and workshops that will bring the story of Abu Dhabi to life.

Stills Bar & Brasserie at Crowne Plaza Abu Dhabi – Yas Island delights visitors with exceptional service and an al fresco terrace with stunning views across Yas Links golf course and the capital’s lush green mangroves. SEAFOOD DELIGHTS ——— Finz at Beach Rotana Abu Dhabi serves up a fine culinary experience in a spectacular setting

Finz at Beach Rotana Abu Dhabi has always been a popular choice among gourmands in the capital but since presenting its fabulous new look in September, it has cemented its reputation as one of the finest seafood restaurants in the country. With charming décor, sophisticated interiors and a showstopper terrace complete with views of the channel and glittering lights of Al Maryah Island, Finz offers a culinary experience like no other, and that’s before guests even look at the menu. Chef Christian Rosse is the man behind the culinary transformation at Finz. The menu, which celebrates modern fare with Mediterranean and Moorish touches, retains some of Finz’s classics while introducing new signature dishes. “At Finz, we offer a daily selection of the freshest seafood available; much is locally sourced and we do have items that are flown in daily. Because we want to showcase the natural flavours of the ingredients, we keep our cooking methods simple with steaming and grilling. Our ‘Just Hooked’ daily menu highlights these selections, and guests can choose directly from our open kitchen seafood display. Additionally, we have added a creative bar snack menu which is perfect for guests who wish to have a taste of Finz while relaxing in the lounge area with its amazing views,” explains chef Rosse. The menu covers classics such as pan seared sea scallops that are given an innovative twist by being combined with smooth celeriac purée, crunchy apple sticks and crispy butter crumbs for nutty and fruity nuances. For mains, make sure to order the signature seafood cataplana that features Gulf prawns, clams, mussels and fish fillets that are cooked in a sealed copper kettle with a seafood broth, beef chorizo and saffron. Desserts are just as innovative – the dulce de leche ice cream sundae features a bar of vanilla ice cream and dulce de leche mousse served with toasted hazelnuts and caramel corn.

Rosse’s passion for culinary arts was sparked at a young age: “While my friends wanted to become famous footballers or pilots, I always wished to be an awesome chef.” He joined Beach Rotana Abu Dhabi in January 2015 after learning his trade in Europe where he gained invaluable experience in Michelin-starred kitchens. Excited by the opportunities at Finz, Rosse jumped at the chance to join the team and contribute to Abu Dhabi’s exciting gourmet offerings. “Simply put, it’s impressive. The overall transformation of Finz at Beach Rotana makes it unique. The fantastic seaside location, relaxed atmosphere of the restaurant, the lounge and terrace views, and the new menu all simply make the place buzz. The combination of coastal Mediterranean seafood with Moorish North African spices make all our dishes unique and different. From the moment you enter, you will notice just how everything from the music to scenery and style mix effortlessly, while the ambience is also the perfect setting for the colourful flavours of food and beverages on offer. We say that we specialise in the unforgettable, but don’t take our word for it, come see for yourself. “The culinary scene in the emirate is already well developed and has grown a lot over the last couple of years. It is exciting to see so many different international concepts in one place as well as the increase of outlets led by globally recognised celebrity chefs. I especially love how the people of Abu Dhabi are so open minded and willing to try new concepts. But development and innovation never stop, and that also applies to the restaurant scene in Abu Dhabi – that’s what makes it so exciting for me to be here.” —— For more information and to reserve a table at Finz in Beach Rotana Abu Dhabi, contact: 02 6979011

LA DOLCE VITA ——— From charming ambience to authentic cuisine, Abu Dhabi boasts a stellar selection of five-star Italian restaurants

With an emphasis on fresh, earthy ingredients, vibrant flavours and a culinary philosophy that enthusiastically promotes lively family get-togethers, Italian cuisine has endeared itself into the hearts of food lovers from all walks of life. Arguably one of the most popular cuisines to make its way over from the Med, Italian food is celebrated for its simplicity. Taking inspiration from the country’s varied cultural and local inf luences, whether it be risotto alla milanese from Lombardy, pasta alla Norma from Sicily or a classic pizza pie from Naples, these regional dishes only serve to strengthen our love affair with Italian cooking. Here in Abu Dhabi, many restaurants put an upscale twist on this traditional fare with modern interpretations complemented by plush surroundings. Concierge presents the emirate’s must-try Italian venues. Buon appetito!

—— Much like the stunning seaside town after which it is named, Amalfi at Le Royal Méridien Abu Dhabi reflects true Italian charm, transporting diners to the picturesque locale of the Amalfi Coast with classic fare. Although the restaurant champions elements found in a typical Italian meal, such as separate menus for starters, soups, pastas, pizzas and mains, each dish is peppered with a hint of exoticism that speaks to the creativity and passion of Amalfi’s expert chefs. Enjoy a gastronomic tour of Italy as you dine your way through decadent plates of plump burrata topped with salmon roe, chicken mattone with cauliflower couscous and hazelnut dressing, and ossobuco alla milanese with saffron risotto. Brimming with rich cheeses and tasty charcuterie cuts – think bresaola, pancetta and prosciutto, to name a few – Amalfi’s decadent meat and cheese menu is the perfect accompaniment to the restaurant’s collection of fine wines. To end your meal, the signature tiramisù creativo comes highly recommended.

C I RCO

—— With its smattering of bright fixtures, funky lighting and kitsch wall décor, Circo, which means circus in Italian, certainly lives up to its quirky reputation. Oozing the same statement style and modern glamour found at Circo’s other global locations in New York and Las Vegas, the lively venue brings its carnival vibe to the capital. This eclecticism carries through to the menu as diners are invited to discover a host of typical Tuscan fare and much-loved Mediterranean classics, many of which have been given a contemporary spin. Tuck into sumptuous dishes including quail and porcini mushroom risotto, tagliatelle with slow cooked Wagyu bolognese, panseared duck breast with cauliflower purée and veal ossobuco with pecorino and thyme crusted rack of lamb. Situated within InterContinental Abu Dhabi, if you’re looking for a restaurant that combines an exciting feel with enticing cuisine, be sure to add Circo to your list of must-try venues.

—— Beautifully presented and full of flavour, the food at Villa Toscana aims to impress on all culinary counts. Located in The St. Regis Abu Dhabi, the restaurant showcases hearty Italian fare in elegant surroundings. Whether you’re taking advantage of the cooler climes with a table on the picturesque terrace or enjoying the cosy ambience in the warmly lit dining room, the venue radiates an inviting and authentic vibe. And fortunately for fans of Italian cuisine the menu more than measures up to this traditional feel. Kick things off with a tempting array of antipasti, think lobster carpaccio with stracciatella cheese and Italian veal ‘tonnato’ with tuna sauce and crispy gorgonzola, followed by rich oxtail agnolotti with porcini mushrooms and the delicate squid ink lobster ravioli. For the main event, the red snapper fillet, which is cooked and served in a pan sealed by pizza dough to enhance the flavours, is a dish that’s as aesthetically pleasing as it flavoursome. Bound to be a draw for certain diners, Villa Toscana is one of the city’s few five-star restaurants to offer a specially crafted gluten-free menu. From rich risottos and tasty pastas to a gorgeous vanilla panna cotta, there’s plenty of variety.

AMICI

—— While it may be housed in Yas Viceroy Abu Dhabi, one of the region’s most recognisable buildings and next door to the world famous Yas Marina Circuit, Amici boasts a wonderfully relaxed, laid-back vibe complemented by rustic, cicchetti-style cuisine. Much like the traditional small plates served in Venice, cicchetti is a great way to sample a variety of dishes in a manner similar to tapas-style sharing. What’s more, the restaurant recently revamped its menu and guests are now offered the chance to make up their meal with a choice of any two or three cicchetti and pizzette. Take your pick from an assortment of vibrant mini dishes, including yellow fin tuna tartar, Sardinian fregola pasta and clam soup, grandmother’s style lasagna alla bolognese with beef ragout and the seafood feast of roasted tiger prawns, calamari, scallops and sea bass fillet with marinated zucchini. In keeping with tradition, there’s no better way to bring your meal to a refreshing end than by indulging in Amici’s sgroppino sorbet selection delicately infused with prosecco, sambuca liqueur, Italian grappa or Aperol.

CULTURAL ATTRACTIONS Rediscover the country’s past and rich history at these spectacular sites

While the mosque is a striking monument to view from afar, we recommend having a tour of the mosque as it exceeds all expectations. To get a closer look at its many facets and gain a deeper understanding of Islam, join one of the complimentary guided tours that take place every day in the mornings and evenings. AL JAHILI FORT

Earlier this year we had the privilege of attending Abu Dhabi Classics’ fantastic Staatskapelle Dresden concert at the historic Al Jahili Fort in Al Ain. The setting was spectacular and made us appreciate the charming fort even more. Al Jahili Fort also houses a permanent exhibition on British adventurer Sir Wilfred Thesiger’s famed journey across The Empty Quarter desert. Contact: 03 7843996

AL AIN CAMEL MARKET

The last souk of its kind in the UAE, visitors to Al Ain Camel Market are in for a treat as it houses hundreds of camels and presents excellent photo opportunities. The market also has several stores selling traditional items. Tour guides are available but it’s easy enough to explore on your own. Situated east of Jebel Hafeet in Al Ain, the market is open from 6am to 7pm. Entry costs AED20 per person.

This cultural gem can be found at the heart of Al Ain’s serene Al Qattara Oasis. Specialising in local and Arab art, we’ve loved the calligraphy workshops and community art events at the centre. ABU DHABI FISHING HARBOUR

An offbeat cultural attraction, this quaint harbour by the Mina Zayed port is a hive of activity. We recommend heading there early in the morning to see the traditional abra boats set sail or later in the evening as catches are offloaded. The scene presents a striking contrast between the past and present with the emirate’s modern skyline in the distance.

ASK THE CONCIERGE

Lyndon Quindipan, chief concierge at Shangri-La Hotel, Qaryat Al Beri, Abu Dhabi reveals some of the emirate’s cultural attractions

1

Abu Dhabi is regarded as one of the most popular destinations in the world today. It is home to a number of world-class attractions and the most iconic is the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque. Considered an architectural work of art, Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque is one of the largest mosques in the world and welcomes visitors of all faiths. Guests are welcome to explore its many facets and join guided tours to learn more about its history as well as the religion of Islam. I recommend visiting in the late afternoon to enjoy a sunset tour of the grand space. The Shangri-La Hotel, Qaryat Al Beri, Abu Dhabi in Khor Al Maqta is conveniently located across Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque and offers fantastic views. Visitors will find themselves in awe of the hotel’s great location and of course the authentic and beauty of the property itself. With its Arabian architecture and interiors, it presents a wonderful sense of place to all who visit. Guests can spend the morning at the hotel’s stunning CHI, The Spa before heading to the private beach and enjoying a gourmet meal and

drinks at one of our nine bars and restaurants, including the award-winning French restaurant Bord Eau and p&c by Sergi Arola, a new venture by the Spanish Michelin-starred chef. The infinity pool at the side of the hotel faces the serene canals and also overlooks the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque. It is the ideal spot for photo opportunities as well as lounging in the sun. The hotel has a few private beach cabanas that can be booked and customised for an exclusive experience. The restaurant reservations team are always happy to assist with special requests and visitors can choose their preferred food, beverages and even entertainment while sitting in a secluded location on the beach. Abu Dhabi also has great shopping and entertainment offerings, with a good selection of malls and theme parks. With Abu Dhabi International Airport also currently undergoing a milestone expansion, the UAE capital is set to welcome even more visitors to experience the best of the city. Saadiyat Island, located just 500 metres off the coast of Abu Dhabi, is home to the Saadiyat Cultural District. A mere five-minute drive from downtown, there are a number of internationally-renowned cultural sites under development here, including the Guggenheim Abu Dhabi, Louvre Abu Dhabi and Zayed National Museum. To learn more about what’s in store, stop by Manarat Al Saadiyat, an artistic centre that hosts interactive exhibitions and workshops, as well as a permanent exhibition on the Saadiyat Island development. Further afield, in the port area of Mina Zayed, is Warehouse421, a vibrant new district that is also worth a visit while in Abu Dhabi. The space regularly hosts community events with a strong focus on local arts and culture.
