—— Revered in the region for its exceptional creations, Al Zain Jewellery has built up an impressive reputation among ardent connoisseurs ever since it was first established in the Kingdom of Bahrain in 1930. Noora Al Zain, explains: “During the days when Bahrain’s trade scene relied mostly on farming, fishing and pearl diving, the family’s forefather, the late Hassan Al Zain, was a famed tawash (pearl merchant). Hassan’s son, Abdulla inherited a great love for pearls.” Abdulla’s genuine passion and entrepreneurial spirit led the two men to combine pearl trading with jewellery making – a relatively new idea at the time. The operation was so successful that they began trading with Europe and Lebanon and, in the 1950s, father and son embarked on an ambitious international expansion plan, which began with the opening of the first Al Zain Jewellery store outside Bahrain in Saudi Arabia. Then, in the mid-1970s, Abdulla’s son Nabeel took over the business and the first Al Zain workshop was opened. By keeping the company within the family for four generations and counting, Al Zain has been able to develop and maintain its own identity in a very competitive industry. Today the jeweller continues to enthrall collectors and discerning clientele with its unique range of handcrafted designs that pay tribute to individuality and seek to celebrate many of life’s most important moments. Over the years, the brand has worked with skilled artisans to procure the highest quality materials, from precious pearls to dazzling diamonds, creating truly outstanding designs that can be treasured for generations to come. From pearl trader to a respected luxury jewellery manufacturer with boutiques across the region, Al Zain is a success story to inspire generations. It has been 86 years since Hassan Al Zain traded his first pearls and his grandsons and great-grandchildren continue to build on his legacy and ensure that his name is always remembered through jewellery pieces worn by women all around the world.

ART OF THE MATTER ——— Vacheron Constantin continues to set the standard for watchmaking excellence
For centuries Vacheron Constantin has crafted artistic timepieces that reflect the highest standards of fine watchmaking. Boasting a rich heritage that few brands can dream of today, the maison was founded in 1755 when master watchmaker Jean-Marc Vacheron signed on his first apprentice. The contract, regarded as the start of Vacheron Constantin, makes it the oldest watch manufacturer in continuous operation since it was founded. It is this legacy that continues to drive the maison forward, explains CEO Juan Carlos Torres. “The essence of Vacheron Constantin can be best described by the motto established by one of the founders – Francois Constantin – in the 1800s: ‘Do better if possible, and that is always possible’. For the last 261 years, Vacheron Constantin has nurtured this vision by striving to create timepieces that stand up to the highest standards of perfection in aesthetics, functionality and quality. From this vision, the maison has developed a unique savoir-faire respecting the rules of traditional fine watchmaking, with the determination to bring constant innovation to it and the obligation to pass it on to the next generation. “Our heritage is unique. We are the oldest watch manufacture with an uninterrupted history. But it is not being ‘old’ that is important. What’s important is that this heritage gives us a unique understanding of our past. For example, we have complete records of any calibre
ever created by our maison since 1755. And we have the watchmakers with the competence to repair any historical piece that comes back to our restoration atelier in the manufacture in Geneva. However, this understanding of the past allows us also to understand how we can constantly re-invent and innovate fine watchmaking – in line and in respect of its century old traditions,” explains Torres. Over the years, the maison has carved out an identity that balances superior technical standards with aesthetic artistry. This is immediately evident in iconic collections such as Métiers d’Art, Malte, Harmony and, more recently, the Overseas range. Featuring a stunning set of elegant sports watches, the Vacheron Constantin Overseas collection effortlessly emanates a world of travel and adventure. “One of our most important recent launches is the third generation of our Overseas collection. The Overseas has always been the sporty, elegant expression and the Overseas 3 brings this expression to an entire new level: in terms of a refined and sophisticated design, in terms of performance with three new in-house calibres and in terms of innovation, with a versatile and patented system that allows the owner of an Overseas to switch between a metal bracelet, leather or rubber strap in less than 10 seconds,” says Torres, who adds that it’s the latter factor that continues to set the Overseas collection apart.

“THE PROCESS OF CREATING A UNIQUE TIMEPIECE IS, FOR OUR CLIENTS AS WELL AS FOR OUR TEA M, AL MOST AS EXCITING AS THE FINAL RESULT”
“With every Overseas timepiece, you actually don’t just get one watch, but three different timepieces: sporty elegance with the alligator strap for work time, comfort and resistance with the metal bracelet during travels, or the cool performance of the rubber strap when you are at the beach. We designed the Overseas to become a perfect companion for our modern cosmopolitan clients, whose lives have many facets and no fixed rules. My personal highlight in the collection is the Ultra Slim Perpetual Calendar because this piece combines all the elements of the Overseas in a unique and very sophisticated way with another strength of Vacheron Constantin – high complications.” Vacheron Constantin were among the first to bring Métiers d’Art to the forefront with the launch of Les Masques in 2009. Today, the maison has some of the best artisans capable of handling important métiers in-house, including enamelling, guilloche, hand engraving, gem setting and miniature painting. “This in-house competence allows us to create exceptional works of art, combining in a new way the traditional métiers like you have never seen it before. The Elégance Sartoriale collection, launched in November 2016, is a perfect example of how the maison is reinventing the traditional Métiers d’Art,” adds Torres. With such exceptional craftsmanship, it’s only expected that the world’s elite would turn to the maison for special custom timepieces as well. While specific orders from members of royalty and other important personalities have been shrouded in secrecy for centuries, the maison’s Atelier Cabinotiers carries on this legacy to custom-make watches. “The Cabinotiers department goes back to the very roots of our maison – the first watchmakers in Geneva were called ‘cabinotiers’
and, at that time, they mostly created watches on demand for their customers. This is the spirit of our Atelier Cabinotiers today: an entire department including designers, watchmakers and artisans with only one mission: to help our clients realise their vision of an exclusive timepiece. This is a rare offer in the world of fine watchmaking today. The process of creating a unique timepiece is, for our clients as well as for our team, almost as exciting as the final result. “One of the Atelier Cabinotiers projects, the calibre 57.260 is the most complicated watch ever created and was presented in 2015 for the 260th anniversary of Vacheron Constantin. It was created for one of our clients and the journey for this piece took us over eight years. Both the client and us enjoyed every moment of it,” says Torres, who adds that “a watch is always a love affair between the watch and the buyer”. As Vacheron Constantin marches towards an even more exciting future, there’s one factor that sure to remain constant in its evolution – a true appreciation for tradition, even as the age of digital takes hold and propels the industry forward. From faster and more direct communication between brands and consumers to clients becoming more and more knowledgeable about fine watchmaking, the maison remains committed to staying true to their identity, respecting customers and not following short-term trends. After all, as Torres explains: “Vacheron Constantin has never followed trends but rather created them”. —— Discover the latest Vacheron Constantin timepiece collections at the boutique in The Dubai Mall. LAMBORGHINI —— As one of the world’s most revered supercar brands, the mere mention of the word Lamborghini instantly conjures up the sights and sounds of a roaring engine, extreme speed and those all important high performance specifications that come encased in an ultra sleek frame. In a city with a penchant for extravagance and seeking out life in the fast lane, Lamborghinis are particularly coveted. With a gorgeous showroom to boot, the experience involved in purchasing one of these supercars is taken to a whole new level. Spread over three levels and boasting two private display areas, visiting the showroom is an immersive experience Ahmed Darrag, Lamborghini marketing manager explains. “In addition to housing some of the industry’s most iconic supercars, this showroom is a striking symbol of design and architecture. It is not just a retail space; this is a building created specifically to represent Lamborghini. Designed by world-renowned architect Carlos Ott, the use of space, extreme curves and innovative engineering emphasises the design – for instance the entire glass façade is suspended by steel cables from the roof.” We’re also told that, on average, the cars on display here can total between AED14 million to a whopping AED32 million. Darrag reveals: “The most iconic car Lamborghini ever sold was the Veneno Roadster, limited to only nine cars worldwide of which two were sold right here in the UAE. It retailed for approximately AED16.5 million. This incredible car has a top speed of 356 kilometres per hour (km/h) and goes from 0–100 km/h in 2.9 seconds”.

BENTLEY —— A true mark of prestige, Bentley’s signature winged emblem is symbolic of the British brand’s commitment to redefined elegance and exceptional service – aspects clearly reflected throughout the new showroom that takes pride of place along Sheikh Zayed Road. “The showroom is the result of an AED100 million investment from Al Habtoor Motors, Bentley’s exclusive retail partner in the UAE. The striking 75,000 square foot space is Bentley’s largest standalone dealership and is set to revolutionise customer service in the world of luxury motoring,” explains international head of marketing and communications, Robin Peel. “It was designed to go beyond any previous luxury automotive experience. Featuring one of the world’s most advanced luminary façades, the exterior comprises 160,000 LED lights and is able to display a full spectrum of colours, project the visuals of all of Bentley’s iconic bespoke veneers and even stream HD quality video. Welcoming Bentley owners with the five-star hospitality that they are accustomed to in Dubai, the building also features three stories for model displays, a popular café on the ground floor and a unique roof garden offered as a private venue that grants fantastic views of the city,” explains Peel. The Mulliner room is one of the many extraordinary elements of this special showroom. Catering to a huge variety of requests, it’s here that our customers can put their own unique stamp of style on the car purchased. From requests as simple as monogrammed upholstery on the latest model to elaborate tailored modifications, the Mulliner team delivers luxury on a new level.

ROLLS–ROYCE —— With an illustrious history that dates back over a century, Rolls-Royce is often the first port of call for the world’s most discerning customers, boasting links with everyone from royalty and political figures to top name celebrities. Revealing more about the emirate’s exclusive showroom, general manager Mamdouh Khairallah explains: “The Rolls-Royce Boutique provides customers with an immersive, 360 degree experience. Spread over two floors, the Boutique features four distinct areas: the Inspiration Studio, Bespoke Atelier, Pinnacle Café and Affinity Area. It’s the place to see and be seen for the region’s eminent patrons of luxury.” Talking us through some of the latest Rolls-Royce models, Khairallah reveals: “The starting price of a Rolls-Royce is AED1.3 million for the Ghost model, however, the final price is of course also dependent on the model and the level of personalisation selected through our Bespoke programme. With highly bespoke models and limited editions, the value can easily reach a multi-million dirham range. With the Rolls-Royce Bespoke programme, anything is possible. In our atelier, visitors can browse everything from exotic leather samples such as ostrich and crocodile, rare South American woods, delicate marquetry, mother-of-pearl inlays and one-off paint commissions, to name a few. The Maharaja-era inspired cars, which were made exclusively for Dubai customers, have to be my favourite bespoke editions. So far we have delivered the Maharaja Peacock in 2014 and the Phantom Tiger in 2015. This year, we hope to unveil the final piece in this set, the Maharaja Elephant Edition.”

The cal m waters of the Ar abian Gulf affords the country’s coast the perfect temper a ment for visitors to indulge in a variet y of watersports
Fortunate enough to benefit from a picturesque coastline as well as a bustling city vibe that boasts a host of world-class attractions, there really isn’t much that the UAE doesn’t offer when it comes to leisure and recreation. Water enthusiasts especially will find it a veritable playground with myriad activities to choose from. The calm waters of the Arabian Gulf affords the country’s coast the perfect temperament for visitors to indulge in a variety of watersports and, among them, kite surfing is one that has become increasingly popular. Make a day of it and join one of the full-day surfing safaris that take visitors around Abu Dhabi’s many islands. Ideal even for beginners, safaris can be tailored to offer different challenges and visitors can also try their hand at stand up paddleboarding. Alternatively pop along to Kite Beach Dubai or Kite Beach Abu Dhabi, as both locations have various outlets from which you can book lessons and rent equipment.
1
Similarly sports such as flyboarding have also been picking up traction in the region, with HH Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai, even spotted showing off his gravity-defying skills. With the help of powerful jets you’ll have the ability to soar around 60 feet above the water, making this a pretty unique way to take in the region’s scenic coastal views. About an hour out of Abu Dhabi city, Wadi Adventure in Al Ain is a remarkable venue that offers everything from surfing to wakeboarding and kayaking. One of the park’s biggest draws is the whitewater rapids. Boasting three separate levels, with a combined length of 1.2 kilometres, Wadi Adventure is home to the world’s longest man-made whitewater channels. Whether you’re familiar with the sport or not, an afternoon tackling these rushing rapids is one you won’t soon forget. Offering even more adventure on dry land, the park also features an
impressive aerial obstacle course, with a challenging climbing wall, zip-line and must-try giant swing. Although if its even more boarding action you’re after, Yas Island’s Yas Waterworld is bound to hit the spot. In addition to the waterpark’s numerous slides and rides, the park’s Rush Rider is ideal for practicing your flowboarding and bodyboarding skills. Once you’ve mastered those moves, head to Yas Waterworld’s Bubbles’ Barrel – the world’s largest surfable sheet wave. With a three-metre high wave that pumps through a whopping 7,000 litres of water, this attraction offers serious surfing fun. For those then that prefer a slightly slower pace, Abu Dhabi is also home to miles of gorgeous green mangrove forests and there’s no better way to explore it all than while kayaking. One of the most tranquil ways to enjoy the capital’s surrounding natural beauty, book a tour and leisurely paddle your way around this stunning eco-system brimming with lush greenery and native wildlife.

With the weather now at an optimum, visitors can look forward to a range of international sporting events. This February, Dubai will play host to several big name tournaments including the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships and golf fixture Omega Dubai Desert Classic. Why not practice your own swing at one of the region’s many prestigious courses. If last month’s Abu Dhabi HSBC Golf Championship has inspired you, take to the same greens at the Abu Dhabi Golf Club. The 162 hectare, par 72 course offers a full day of entertaining play. Meanwhile, Dubai’s Emirates Golf Club is the home of the hotly anticipated PGA European Tour sanctioned Omega Dubai Desert Classic, which is on until February 5. As the first all-grass championship course in the Middle East, the club opened in 1988 and now features the Majlis and Faldo course, both 18-hole courses.

With race season now in full swing over at Dubai’s Meydan Grandstand and Racecourse, and the illustrious Dubai World Cup set to captivate horseracing enthusiasts next month, it’s a great opportunity to jump in the saddle yourself and try the sport that’s very dear to the nation’s heart. The Equestrian Centre at Al Forsan International Sports Resort in the capital boasts an international polo field and show jumping course with indoor and outdoor riding lessons and even pony rides for the kids. One for the whole family, the venue also invites visitors to take their pick from a wide range of activities, including paintballing, shooting, archery, basketball and tennis, to name just a few. If you’re looking to shift it up a gear, then try your hand at the different motorsports available. From high-performance karting to offroad buggy racing on a special floodlit circuit that
has previously hosted the FIA Desert Challenge, the sports centre will ensure it’s an action-packed visit for all. The adrenaline rush continues over at Yas Marina Circuit, home of the Formula 1 Etihad Airways Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. Designed by famed circuit architect Hermann Tilke, this waterfront venue wraps around the capital’s world-class marina, creating not only plenty of mooring space for a bevy of super-yachts but also adding to the track’s dynamic silhouette. Its distinctive design promises plenty of pulse pumping racing with tight corners, a massive hairpin and high-speed section including the longest F1 racing straight. If you’re eager to get behind the wheel and feel the thrill of these legendary twists and turns yourself, there are various super-charged vehicles that can be hired as well as drive experience packages.

One of the city’s most culturally significant spots, Dubai Creek grants a unique perspective into the emirate’s past as a pearling and fishing port. The creek, also known as ‘Khor’ or ‘heart’ of Dubai, runs through the city’s neighbouring districts of Deira and Bur Dubai. Peppered with traditional buildings, the area boasts distinctive wind-tower architecture and an eclectic variety of restaurants, cafés and retail outlets. The story of Dubai Creek is very much a tale of the generations who have earned a living from its waters. Decades ago, fishing boats and pearling dhows set sail from here in search of the emirate’s early wealth. Today, the creek’s banks are still abuzz with tradesmen and tourists catching abra water taxis, while traditional boats, known as dhows, ferry wares to nearby countries, much in the same way as times gone by. A world apart from the city’s towering skyscrapers and luxury resorts, the appeal of Dubai Creek is truly unique. Just a short stroll away, visitors can meander through the aromatic spice stalls and colourful souks that present an assortment of authentic souvenirs, perfumes and brightly hued fabrics. Undoubtedly, one of the most famous to shop at is the Gold Souk. Glittering with an array of gilded treasures, it offers some of the best choice and prices for gold jewellery in the region. From here, amble your way along the winding streets to Al Fahidi Historical Neighbourhood. Built in 1859, its picturesque lanes, steeped in the emirate’s rich history, are now home to a variety of niche kiosks and art galleries. For a taste of local flavour, Emirati restaurant Aseelah at Radisson Blu Hotel, Dubai Deira Creek is worth a visit. The popular Pullman Dubai Creek City Centre is another great find. With a great rooftop pool offering spectacular views of the neighbourhood as well as several restaurant and bars, there’s plenty to take you through from afternoon to evening. 7

THE RIGHT INGREDIENTS ——— Chef Uwe Micheel reveals his appreciation for Dubai and the culinary variety on offer at one of the city’s most iconic properties
Dubai has long been regarded as a playground for gourmands, attracting international chefs and unique restaurant concepts. One man, however, has been working tirelessly behind the scenes to build the country’s reputation for culinary excellence – chef Uwe Micheel. Since 1993, he has held the role of director of kitchens at Radisson Blu Hotel, Dubai Deira Creek. A hotel that takes pride of place in the city’s famed historical district as one of the oldest five-star hotels. That same year, he joined the Emirates Culinary Guild (ECG) – a non-profit organisation solely dedicated to the advancement of the culinary art of the UAE. Since 1999, Micheel has been president of the ECG, which is also recognised by the World Association of Cooks Societies (WACS). “Dubai’s culinary scene has evolved amazingly in the last few years. I still remember a time when chefs flew to Singapore and Hong Kong to see the latest trends and concepts. Now the whole world comes to Dubai, to see what we do here. The choice and diversity of restaurants in the city really is second to none and I love the fact that it remains focused on traditional and authentic food which was in danger of disappearing,” says Micheel, who discovered his love for cooking while helping his grandmother in the kitchen. “I decided to become a chef for two reasons. I loved to be with my grandmother in the kitchen and experienced the best times with family and friends with good food on the table and, secondly, I always wanted to travel to see the world. I grew up in the village with only 150 people and I always thought that being a chef would open a door to the world,” he explains. After an apprenticeship in Celler Hof boutique hotel and working at the hotel Schwarzer Bock, Micheel went on to serve as a chef in the army service for a couple of years. He later joined the InterContinental Hotels Group in 1981 in Berlin, Germany, before moving to the United Kingdom as the chef de partie in London’s Michelin-starred restaurant, Le Souffle. After further stints in Bahrain, Japan and Korea, he made his way to Dubai. With 11 dining venues, Radisson Blu Hotel, Dubai Deira Creek on Bani Yas Road, showcases the finest standards in culinary excellence, thanks
to the efforts of Micheel. Here visitors can discover everything from delicious Thai fare at Fish Market, Iranian specialities at Shabestan, Chinese cuisine at China Club, signature Japanese creations at Minato and all-day dining at Boulvar to sweet indulgences at Boulevard Gourmet, exceptional Korean food at Sumibiya, YUM! noodle house, British-themed fare at The Pub, memorable meals while onboard the popular Al Mansour Dhow f loating restaurant on the Dubai Creek and, of course, the famed Aseelah restaurant that serves up Emirati cuisine. “I joined the hotel in January 1993. At the time, it was known as InterContinental Hotel Dubai, the first five-star hotel in the city. A typical day starts by briefing my colleagues and teams. After that, it’s hard to predict. Every day really is very different. That is perhaps one of the greatest aspects of our profession, facing a different challenge every day or, in fact, every hour,” explains Micheel. “Some of the signature dishes visitors should try at the hotel include the prawn curry at Fish Market, the succulent meat platter at Shabestan, hearty fish and chips at The Pub, stir-fried char kway teow at YUM! and chicken margoogat and roulade at Aseelah. If they only have time to eat one dish, however, they have to order the delicious Peking duck at China Club.” Micheel has enjoyed many career highlights to date, including working at Le Souffle when it received a Michelin star, opening great hotels in Korea and Japan and winning his first major international award in 2002 as the best chef in a hotel operation under a corporate brand. “I also broke the Guinness record for the biggest cake in the world in Dubai and am involved with the ICCA Young Scholarship Programme, an AED1 million annual continuing education award for young chefs in the industry. It’s great to be recognised for your work,” adds Micheel, who takes continues to nurture and promote the city’s culinary scene. —— For more information and to book a table at any of the restaurants in Radisson Blu Hotel, Dubai Deira Creek, contact: 04 2227171

If the restaurant’s spectacular décor doesn’t impress – think regal arches complete with luxurious drapery and Arabesque patterns – the warm hospitality and menu of Arabic and Oriental dishes will. Book a table on the terrace for fine views, while private dining alcoves are also available for those that prefer a more intimate experience. Every Wednesday, the restaurant pulls out all the stops for a themed Arabian Nights feast where visitors can enjoy a lavish buffet featuring signature dishes, complemented by memorable live entertainment courtesy of talented oud musicians and belly dancers. Try the lentil soup, lamb kofta kebab and roasted lamb leg, before ending the meal with the traditional Umm Ali bread pudding and moreish Baklava sweets. —— ASEELAH
N OV I KOV
Traditional Emirati recipes and seasonal local ingredients are celebrated at Aseelah in Radisson Blu Hotel, Dubai Deira Creek where the décor reflects a wonderful sense of place. Colourful lanterns and camel figurines are dotted across the tables while intricate lights decorated in Arabesque patterns hang from the ceiling. Here Emirati rice dishes are cooked with a variety of meats and chef Uwe Micheel elevates the flavour of locally-sourced, sustainable fish by using his own homemade spice combinations and tangy, flavourful chutneys. For a true taste of the emirate, try the maleh salad of preserved fish on a bed of lettuce and grilled Gulf prawns that are flavoured with turmeric and lemon. Contact: 04 2057033
This chic Asian restaurant and bar at Sheraton Grand Hotel, Dubai effortlessly sets the scene for a memorable dinner with ease. Here the contemporary décor, complete with dark woods and statement lighting fixtures, matches the sleek service so don’t hesitate to ask the expert staff for recommendations. The restaurant’s Chinese and pan-Asian inspired menu lives up to high expectations but make sure to also check out the selection of seafood displayed proudly at the restaurant’s own ‘fresh market’. There’s a lot to choose from and on our last visit we enjoyed Novikov’s signature sashimi creations that included hamachi carpaccio and scallops with black truffle. Everything here is prepared fresh and presented with flourish. Contact: 04 3888744
One of the signature restaurants at Fairmont The Palm, Seagrill on 25° Restaurant & Lounge features a menu that’s primarily focused on ‘fruits de la mer’ with a Mediterranean touch. To start, we’d recommend ordering the delicious seafood linguini packed with mussels, shrimp, clams and squid that is marinated in a flavourful yet delicate tomato sauce. The menu’s Fish Market section lists the restaurant’s signature seafood selection, which includes seabass from Greece, octopus from Tunisia and black seabream from Turkey as its Mediterranean highlights. Contact: 04 4573457 TRESIND
Fans of Indian cuisine are in for a treat at Tresind. Located at Nassima Royal Hotel, the fine dining restaurant introduces your palate to a whole host of possibilities thanks to chef Himanshu Saini’s expertise in molecular gastronomy. Here the sciences of physics and chemistry transform tastes and textures of food in delightful ways. Seafood enthusiasts will no doubt enjoy the pan-seared scallops served with a rich peanut sauce, while the Achari monk fish that celebrates the tangy flavour of pickles and the delicious pepper prawns tossed with curry leaves is well recommended. Renel Gamboa, chief concierge at Shangri-La Hotel, Dubai, reveals the best of the city
1
Dubai offers a truly unique experience for every visitor. The city is very diverse with over 200 nationalities calling the emirate home. It is also renowned for an exciting blend of old and new attractions that celebrate the nation’s past, while also showcasing its modern ambitions. The city has something for everyone and, as chief concierge at Shangri-La Hotel, it’s my job to recommend and advise guests on the very best. While there are a variety of responsibilities during a ‘day in the office’, I find it very fulfilling when a guest returns delighted after an experience I suggested. At Shangri-La Hotel, we treat each guest as a member of our family, which they value. The hotel is situated in the heart of Dubai, close to a number of popular visitor attractions, including the world’s biggest shopping mall, The Dubai Mall, which is home to the best luxury and designer brands. Also nearby is the world’s tallest tower, Burj Khalifa, which features the At the Top observation deck so visitors can enjoy stunning views of the city

from high above. Visitors should also stop by the Dubai International Financial Centre right next door, which is home to exciting art galleries and gourmet restaurants. The city has done such a great job of unveiling wonderful attractions recently, including Dubai Water Canal. This 12-kilometre waterway now connects the historic Dubai Creek with the Arabian Gulf and has dramatically transformed the city’s landscape. Considered the longest promenade in the UAE, the picturesque canal has turned parts of old Dubai, including Bur Dubai, Karama and Satwa, into an island. Visitors can explore the vicinity onboard public water taxis. Dubai Opera is another great addition to the city, staging award-winning musicals, shows and concerts. For those who are short on time or visiting Dubai for a weekend, head over to Dubai Museum in Bur Dubai or the nearby Heritage Village for a glimpse into the city’s historic past. This can be followed by a safari drive into the dunes of the Arabian desert to watch the sun set in this magical setting. The city has a number of exciting shopping destinations and one hidden gem is Saga World, which is located on Jumeirah Beach Road. It’s a great place to shop for unique souvenirs with everything from jewellery and woven carpets to Arabic-inspired artwork and statement furniture crafted from gold and silver. After a long day of shopping and exploring, enjoy dinner at Pierchic in Madinat Jumeirah, which is located on a private pier and presents exceptional waterside views. Alternatively, book a table at one of Shangri-La Hotel’s excellent restaurants including Shang Palace for Cantonese classics, Junoon for Indian delights and Hoi An for modern Vietnamese fare.
