As a visitor and guest in Abu Dhabi you are staying in a destination of distinction, which I hope you will find so engaging and exciting that you return time and time again. We in the UAE capital believe our homeland is something of a welcome contradiction for travellers. It is a place where deep-rooted Arabian heritage is deftly woven into a rich destination tapestry complete with luxury accommodation and world-class leisure attractions. Abu Dhabi is blessed with a diverse landscape. We have 400 kilometres of pristine coastline, over 200 natural islands, vast tracts of serene desert, tranquil oasis towns and a vibrant, cosmopolitan capital city. I hope during your stay you are able to experience as much of this variety as possible. In many ways, this emirate is several destinations in one, from the rustic charm of Al Ain, the birthplace of the country’s founding father, Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, and the breathtaking vastness of the Liwa Desert in Al Gharbia with its mountainous dunes, to the energising pace and brightness of our capital city. We all share a desire to make you feel as welcome as possible and hope you leave with a positive, lasting impression of our homeland, traditions and people. In the pages of this magazine, you will find an overview of the emirate’s widespread appeal and I’m sure you will find much to inspire and entertain you. I wish you a relaxing, enjoyable and memorable stay in Abu Dhabi.

Tradition, with a twist

‘The Souk at Qaryat Al Beri’ is a unique venue and the first of its kind in Abu Dhabi. Built on two levels, The Souk is an interesting fusion of Arabian architecture with a Venetian theme, which together reflects traditional Arab hospitality. Water canals meander through The Souk and nearby properties with abra boats ferrying hotel guests from the Shangri-La Hotel to various locations. Several restaurants and coffee shops have alfresco dining terraces that overlook the waters and afford a view of the picturesque landscape.

For more artistic exploration, Manarat Al Saadiyat and the UAE Pavilion at Saadiyat Island often hosts interesting art fairs. For a romantic night out, Vasco’s at Hilton Abu Dhabi is an awardwinning international restaurant and has a deck that offers beautiful views of the city lights and sea, while Bocca, also at Hilton Abu Dhabi, boasts a comprehensive selection of Italian wines. There are so many wonderful shopping malls in Abu Dhabi but Marina Mall’s scenic location alongside the emirate’s stunning Corniche offers some of the best photo opportunities as the city’s dramatic skyline is in the frame. With the seemingly effortless ease that Juan Diego Flórez hits the high notes, the Peruvian was always going be a shining star in the world of opera. When Luciano Pavarotti, the most famous tenor of them all, called him the “best new talent in the classical music world”, his future became brighter than ever. That was a little more than a decade ago and, today, Flórez is modest about the accolades from his idol. “We met and I sang for him. I was invited to his house and I sang this aria without warming up and he seemed to like it. He was always very good to me in the media and it was a great honour. We met many times since and I was close to him when he passed away.” Now, widely regarded as the world’s finest tenor by classical music aficionados, Flórez has been secured as one of the artists by the Abu Dhabi Music and Arts Foundation (ADMAF) to perform at the Abu Dhabi Festival, which takes over the UAE capital from March 3 to April 2. With performances at Emirates Palace and Abu Dhabi Theatre, Abu Dhabi Festival is regarded widely as one of the Middle East’s leading cultural events and will also feature performances by Brazilian music legend Sérgio Mendes, maestro Riccardo Muti – who will be conducting violin virtuoso Anne-Sophie Mutter – and the Luigi Cherubini Youth Orchestra. ADMAF’s founder Hoda Al Khamis-Kanoo says the festival has always aimed to give audiences an introduction to new cultures in a region still relatively new to theatre and classical music. “Over the years, we have offered our audiences a wide array of memorable experiences, exposing them to new and innovative performances but we have also offered the artists from this region and elsewhere the opportunity to meet, exchange and share ideas,” she explains.

“We are experiencing an exciting period of transformation as more and more cultural activities are established across the UAE. This organic growth is strengthening the momentum of the cultural sector” Since its inception in 1996, classical theatre and performing arts has been a cornerstone of the foundation, which invests heavily in nurturing the cultural growth of the UAE. Supporting the main programme, the festival’s extensive education and community programme will involve all seven emirates. Abu Dhabi Festival also includes a broad visual arts component featuring two new commissions by Emirati artists Fatima Lootah and Noor Al Suwaidi and will host the popular FotoFest exhibition, View From Inside, which continues until April 20 a nd feat u res contempora r y A rab photographic and media works from 48 prominent Arab artists. Al Khamis Kanoo says the non-profit organisation works all year round to support local Emirati talent and its Grants Scheme is offered to numerous artists seeking funds for their projects. This investment has been instrumental in slowly propelling the country’s foray into the arts sector here and worldwide. “We are experiencing an exciting period of transformation as more and more cultural activities are established across the UAE. This organic growth is strengthening the momentum of the cultural

sector and helping to develop more and more audiences for the arts.” It forms part of the quest to position Abu Dhabi as an international cultural capital. Judging from Flórez’s excitement over performing in the UAE, the organisation may have already garnered that international acclaim. “I have performed in Muscat before, so I have been to the Middle East, but this will be my first time in the UAE. My colleagues, who have performed at the Abu Dhabi Festival before, have told me it is wonderful. I am really looking forward to it. I want to try to get to know the city too, to really discover it,” Flórez tells Concierge.

Discovery seems to play a significant part in Flórez’s life; over the past 20 years, he has been working with the natural changes in his voice, while still managing to stay at the top of his profession – not an easy feat for anyone and certainly not for a performer who first found his love for classical music in his late teens, while practising to be a pop singer. “In my family, we didn’t have contact with classical music and I wanted to find out how to improve my writing and piano playing. I entered the National Conservatory of Music in Lima, discovered I could hit high notes and realised I love singing opera. Then I decided to be a tenor, which is very difficult, but I loved it. When I was 23, I was lucky to get the leading role in Gioachino Rossini’s famous opera, Matilde di Shabran.”

Translated into English as The Beauty and Heart of Iron, the story focuses on a character called Corradino, a misogynistic man with a fearsome reputation, whose doctor tries to get him to fall in love with his ward, the sharp-witted Matilde, to make him happy. Flórez was indeed lucky to get the role of Corradino, which has been described by enthusiasts as “impossible” to sing as he was only taken on when the American opera singer Bruce Ford fell ill. However, after Flórez’s astounding debut in 1996

at the Rossini Opera Festival in Pesaro in Italy any concerns about his tender age were dispelled, and the role effectively cemented his career. He was signed on to perform at the renowned La Scala opera house in Milan. From there, Flórez never looked back. Opera, unfortunately, isn’t necessarily the first choice of music for Peruvians. There are few opera theatres in the South American state and those that survive are in a state of disrepair. Flórez is determined to use his 6

status to change that. He believes artists have a duty to create a profile for classical music and he is keen to give back to the community that nurtured and supported him throughout his career, running a charity called Sinfonia por el Peru. “I create music schools to help disadvantaged children play in orchestras. They join and they change and have better self-esteem. This takes me to Peru every year to see how it is going and how the children are doing. I think it is important to work with communities to make them better.” It is clear that Flórez does not take his fame and talent for granted, insisting that it is essential to try and make a difference for

future generations. “I am very involved with young people’s causes in general. I want to set up a school for singers in Vienna where I live so they have an outlet to perform and good training to back that up,” he explains. Flórez passion for classical music and nurturing young talent mirrors the ambitions Al Khamis-Kanoo has for the upcoming Abu Dhabi Festival. The event will be introducing a brand new series of recitals by bringing in award-winning younger performers of classical music, including Dominican violinist Aisha Syed Castro. Al Khamis-Kanoo says she hopes their presence will encourage fresh, new local talent. “These intimate concerts offer a unique opportunity for audiences to experience tomorrow’s global virtuosos. Pianists Ah Reum Ahn, Julian Libeer, and Jan Lisiecki, as well as violinist Aisha Syed Castro, will also engage and inspire Abu Dhabi’s talented young musicians through workshops in schools, universities and music centres, inspiring the youth of the region with their talent and dedication.” Al Khamis-Kanoo says they will continue to support artists in the coming years and audiences can also look forward to more variety. “Looking back over the past 12 years of Abu Dhabi Festival, it is wonderful to remember all the amazing moments in the development of the festival. This fuels an appetite to expand and explore just what the Abu Dhabi Festival can accomplish over the next few years.”

Sir Bani Yas Island A day on this natural island provides an excellent escape from city life

ACTIVITIES Visitors to Sir Bani Yas Island can choose between a huge variety of activities on land and sea. Popular ocean sports include kayaking in the mangroves, snorkelling around offshore reefs and scuba diving down to underwater wrecks. Back on land, mountain biking and horse riding are excellent ways to explore the island, while the Activities Centre offers guests the chance to try traditional Arabian activities such as archery, organised by Desert Islands Resort & Spa by Anantara. Contact: 02 8015400

Descending on Sir Bani Yas Island is like entering another world. Herds of wild animals take the place of crowds of people, skyscrapers are replaced with miles of safari terrain and mountain ranges, and desert-friendly 4x4s substitute taxis and sports cars. Situated off the coast of Jabel Al Dhanna, Sir Bani Yas Island is accessible only via ferry or seaplane which adds to its exclusivity. The majority of the land is given over to the Arabian Wildlife Park; one of the region’s largest reserves where thousands of animals roam free. Visitors will come across a wide variety of species including gazelles, hyenas, cheetahs, ostriches and crowned cranes. The island is particularly proud of its Arabian oryx. The antelope-esque animals are native to the Arabian Peninsula and were in grave danger of extinction until the late UAE President HH Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan launched a breeding programme. As a result, the number worldwide has grown from just 100 to thousands. The best way to see all the animals in their habitats is to book a wildlife drive with Desert Islands Resort & Spa by Anantara on the island. In addition to nature tours and hikes, visitors can explore archaeological sites that provide fascinating insights into the lives of the early settlers, the Bani Yas tribe, who originally called the island home. Poetry in motion

VAN CLEEF & ARPELS Midnight PlanĂŠtarium POETIC COMPLICATION

For over a century, Van Cleef & Arpels has combined exceptional craftsmanship with technical innovation in its creations. The Poetry of Time exhibition celebrates the Maison's artistic legacy

35

Van Cleef & Arpels' Midnight PlanĂŠtarium Poetic Complication remains one of the Maison's most stunning timepieces of all time. Having achieved the dream of capturing the wonders of the sky in a wristwatch, the Maison made use of its rich jewellery-making heritage to provide a miniature representation of the movement of six planets around the sun

Midnight PlanĂŠtarium depicts the planets of our solar system using a series of hard stones which are intricately sculpted by hand into spheres of different dimensions and colours before being positioned around a sun in pink gold on the dial. Each of the planets, along with the shooting star in pink gold, is fixed on its own aventurine disc and mimics the length of the planet's orbit. They are set in motion with the help of a complex self-winding mechanical movement that contains 396 parts

The Extraordinary Dials collection of timepieces remains one of the key craftsmanship highlights from Van Cleef & Arpels. With the Cadran Extraordinaire Midnight Constellation Gallus, limited to just 22 pieces worldwide, an intricately crafted rooster is in the spotlight on a mother-of-pearl and white gold dial, adorned with stunning champlevĂŠ and vallonnĂŠ enamel

38

The essence of the Maison's Extradordinary Dials collection is to tell a story in motion. Van Cleef & Arpels has applied all its savoir-faire in the fields of inlaying, stone selection, cutting and setting, lacquering, hand engraving and enamelling to the creation of these precious, dreamlike dials which remain unrivalled in artistry and attention to detail

Van Cleef & Arpels' Poetry of Time exhibition, which was presented at The Dubai Mall Atrium last month, featured an enchanting collection of timepieces themed around Poetic Astronomy. The universe and its marvels have long inspired extraordinary creations from the Maison including Midnight PlanĂŠtarium, Lady Arpels Jour Nuit, Lady Arpels Zodiac and Midnight de la Terre Ă la Lune

Van Cleef & Arpels boasts a rich legacy, crafting timepieces that evoke a sense of fantasy and emotion. From the cycles of the sun and the moon to the wonders of star constellations, the Poetry of Time exhibition celebrates the Maison’s commitment to a poetic view of life

Scents & sensibility Givenchy’s fragrance expert Françoise Donche reveals some of the mystery behind perfumes

The house of Givenchy is no stranger to the world of innovation. Founder Hubert de Givenchy is famed for not only creating the first-ever shirt dress but also broke convention to be the first high-fashion designer to present the earliest ready-to-wear clothing line. When he launched Parfums Givenchy in 1957, the creative worlds of haute couture and fragrances came together in spectacular fashion. Givenchy’s renowned fragrance expert Françoise Donche is carrying on the house’s rich legacy in perfumery, having orchestrated the development of women’s and men’s fragrances at Parfums Givenchy for over 25 years. Donche co-ordinates the conceptualisation and development of each fragrance and works in collaboration with some of the world’s greatest perfumers – or noses as they are affectionately known. That impressive roster includues Dominique Ropion, Carlos Benaïm and Sophie Labbé for Very Irrésistible, François Demachy for Dahlia Noir, Jean Jacques for Gentlemen Only, Jean-Pierre Bethouart and Olivier Cresp for Ange ou Démon among others. Françoise Donche introduces Concierge to the world of Parfums Givenchy, revealing inspirations behind new fragrances and the art of perfume application.

43

World of perfumery To be a fragrance expert takes years of training and focused expertise, but a passion for scents is perhaps one of the most important criteria. Growing up at the foot of the French Alps, Françoise Donche regards her childhood as a keen indication of her decision to join the world of perfumery. “I remember my mother had a wonderful garden filled with flowers and fruits. When I was four or five years old, I started to pick flowers for bouquets with her and enjoyed smelling them. I had no idea at the time that the work of noses existed but I memorised those smells,” Donche tells Concierge. When she was teenager, a friend introduced her to the famous perfumer, Jean-Louis Sieuzac, creator of renowned scents Opium and Farenheit. He soon became her mentor and her life took a very different path. “I was only 21 at the time but I discovered France had very talented gourmet, fashion and fragrance aficionados. We also had very good schools that educated senses. In France, we have 300 years of history with the sense of smell and Jean-Louis Sieuzac introduced me to the school of noses,” she explains. After three years’ training in the

prestigious ISIPCA school in Versailles – the only school dedicated solely to olfaction studies in France – she became skilled in composing formulas and eventually joined Parfums Givenchy, a company that strongly values creative freedom. “Frankly, I’m quite privileged because I’ve been working with Givenchy for 27 years and we belong to a very exclusive club within haute couture and fragrance brands where the management offers a very high level of autonomy to the creators. The objective, after all, is to be different, not only from one of your own creations to another but also in comparison with other brands.”

1

Iconic fragrances One of Givenchy’s most successful families of fragrances is the high-end L’Atelier collection, which was unveiled to the world last year and has become a firm favourite among discerning clientele. In an ode to its haute couture history, Givenchy’s fashion archives were researched for the exclusive collection and seven dresses, dating from 2005 to 2011, were chosen for inspiration — one for each fragrance. This iconic collection is available at only 20 points of sale around

the world including Dubai, and boasts the finest and most luxurious ingredients from oud in Oud Flamboyant to delicate neroli blossoms in Néroli Originel. Another highlight this spring is Givenchy’s latest edition to the eaudemoiselle line. Created in 2010, eaudemoiselle de Givenchy is one of the house’s most timeless fragrances and the new eaudemoiselle absolu d’oranger is an Oriental floral tribute to femininity that is centred around one key ingredient – orange blossom absolute. “Our eaudemoiselle is very successful in the Middle East for several reasons. There’s a strong acceptance of vintage and the bottle design reflects that but it’s also

because of the creation itself. We’ve kept the same base notes of cedar wood and musk but the heart notes have been based on orange flower absolute. It is a Tunisian flower and one that has a long history in the world of scents – it was originally used to soothe and relax babies, lulling them to sleep. It was also used in food to perfume cakes and then, in the 1950s, it was used in soaps. “In eaudemoiselle absolu d’oranger, we used a highly concentrated dose of orange f lower to create a sensual and caressing sensation. Orange flower is loved by many cultures and I think this scent is exceptional,” Donche adds. The ingredients that go into every Givenchy creation are the most important factor and the house continues to work with trusted suppliers, building strong relationships that have spanned decades. “We have enjoyed a very long partnership with our producers. They have always offered a high level of professionalism and have been specialists in this trade for over 50 years. We don’t want to change suppliers because we do not accept variations. People buy their favourite perfumes for a reason. They hate the idea that something is not exactly as they remember it or that it has been modified,” Donche explains.

4

Often how a perfume is applied can make a dramatic difference to its overall effect. Liberal sprays should be kept to a minimum in urban cities

Art of application

4 Ange ou Étrange Le Parfum & Accord Illicite by Givenchy 5 L’Atelier De Givenchy Ambre Tigré perfume

5

In July, Givenchy will release Ange ou Étrange, an elegant woody and Oriental fragrance, which is then enhanced by the Accord Illicit concentrate applied on the body’s pulse points. “We really wanted to explore a double application, using a spray and finger. This practice has been used for generations and is well known in different countries but we have created it for today’s woman. Ange ou Étrange has a clear identity with bergamot which is very energetic. It then evolves with jasmine and is prolonged with patchouli. The special addition Accord Illicite is made of cedar wood and is used as an enhancer,” Donche explains. Ideally, women will only need one drop of the enhancer combined with four sprays of the Ange ou Étrange. Often how a perfume is applied can make a dramatic difference to its overall effect. Donche advises that liberal sprays should be kept to a minimum in cities as it can get overwhelming. “Givenchy is all about couture, so I always recommend to spray both skin and clothes. Take either your skirt or jacket and spray

inside, towards the base. The textile will absorb and diffuse it. It’s also a good way to make preferred perfumes last longer as fragrances remain on cloth for about three days on average. Also, you can mix scents with fresh notes with everything from Givenchy. Mandarin, lime and others from the citrus family bring energy to the fragrance and don’t create chaotic variations,” she says. Some perfumes lend a powerful aura of mystery to their wearers and can evoke an alluring sense of fantasy. Donche estimates to have worn at least 2,000 fragrances during her professional career and has to review about 70 perfumes every year on average. Despite having experimented with a multitude of ingredients and scents for decades, one of her personal favourites remains tuberose mingled with vanilla, which she composes herself, referring to its effect as “seeing sunshine enveloped in a soft veil”. “When wearing Givenchy perfumes, women should feel self-assured. It’s a way to escape mundane reality and I love the fact that people are happy when they wear Givenchy,” Donche adds.

In good time Fine watchmaking and avant-garde innovations are in focus at this year’s edition of Baselworld in Switzerland

Watch aficionados around the world are counting down to the annual edition of Baselworld which takes place every spring in the charming city of Basel in Switzerland. Around 1,500 brands from the watch and jewellery industry are expected to participate in Baselworld 2015, which is hosted from March 19 to 26 at exhibition site Messe Basel, showcasing their best collections and latest innovations. In anticipation, Concierge highlights early releases from some of the best in the industry, including Blancpain, Breguet, Bulgari, Harry Winston and Omega.

Blancpain 1 2

Swiss watch manufacturer Blancpain, with a history that dates as far back as the 17th century, boasts a fine range of collections. These include Le Brassus and the famed Fifty Fathoms that received a modern update at last year’s Baselworld in the form of the stunning Fifty Fathoms Bathyscaphe Flyback Chronograph – water resistant to depths of 300 metres. The company’s Villeret Collection, which gets its name from Blancpain’s native village

of Villeret, remains one of the company’s most classic lines and, this year, the collection is joined by a refined grand date complication timepiece. The new Blancpain Villeret Grande Date stands out with its date display that features two adjoining windows to maximise readability. It features a red gold 40-millimetre case, an opaline dial with Roman numerals, red gold hands, the date display at 6 o’clock and a clear sapphire caseback offering a view of the complex movement.

Harry Winston American luxury brand Harry Winston was founded in 1932 and quickly revolutionised modern jewellery design. The company ventured into the business of watchmaking in 1989 before opening a dedicated Manufacture in Geneva which, today, crafts timepieces that reflect fine aesthetics and bold design. One such example is the use of feathers in artistic placement, once again in the spotlight in the new Midnight Feathers Automatic 42-millimetre timepiece from the Harry Winston Midnight Collection. Resembling textured fabric, feathers are carefully selected and shaped before being placed in an artistic motif that plays on alternating colours on the dial. Each piece is truly one of a kind because of the craftsmanship involved, while the clear caseback reveals finishes of the mechanical movement.

Breguet

5

Founded in 1775, Breguet is one of the world’s oldest watchmaking manufacturers. It remains renowned for its innovations, including the 7027 model from the Tradition Collection that was launched a decade ago – the first timepiece to showcase the mechanism of the movement on top of the baseplate. This year welcomes a new model to the Tradition line: Automatique Seconde Rétrograde 7097, which is inspired by the famed ‘subscription watches’ that founder Abraham-Louis Breguet first produced in 1796. At the time, these one-hand watches were fitted with a simple movement and sold on subscription. The new Tradition 7097 timepiece reveals the bridges, wheels, escapement, barrel and other components of its self-winding movement that usually tend to be hidden beneath the baseplate, creating a dramatic dial in silvered gold offset at 12 o’clock.

5 Breguet Tradition Automatique Seconde Rétrograde 7097 6 Omega Constellation Pluma with a light coral dial 7 Bulgari Lucea gem-set 18-carat pink gold watch with an alligator strap 8 Bulgari Bulgari with sapphire blue dial and blue alligator strap

Boasting an illustrious history – Omega was the first watch on the moon and has been the official timekeeper of the Olympics since 1932 – the Swiss watchmaker keeps innovating year after year. Constellation Pluma for women made its debut last year and stood out with an elegant wave pattern engraved on the mother-ofpearl dial, reminiscent of the lines of a feather. This year, Omega presents a new light coral-coloured dial for the 27-millimetre timepiece, decorated with 11 diamond indexes in 18-carat gold holders. The central hour, minute and second hands are also coated with Omega’s white Super-LumiNova technology, so the time can be read in even darker conditions.

Bulgari The renowned Italian house may have only begun producing watches in the 1940s but Bulgari has quickly grown to establish a strong reputation for itself in the competitive watch industry thanks to its refined design aesthetics. Adding a new chapter to its watchmaking history, this year sees a welcome update to the iconic Bulgari Bulgari timepiece with a stunning sapphire blue 41-millimetre dial with a Solotempo self-winding movement, as well as new very feminine interpretations at 26-millimetre and 31-millimetre sizes that are set with diamonds. Bulgari’s Lucea line has also been refreshed with the luxury women’s watch appearing in a new gem-set pink gold version with an alligator strap, as well as in white gold with a diamond-set case and bracelet.

Using the flair of robatayaki, grilling chefs cook fresh seafood, vegetables and meat to perfection in front of visitors before handing them around on a large wooden paddle amid resounding cheers. It’s a very lively dinner setting, especially in the evenings, with waitresses dressed in kimonos and rounds of authentic sake on order. Visitors can also call ahead and check their meal coincides with the mochi pounding ceremony – a New Year’s tradition performed nightly at Inakaya, in which diners use a giant mortar and pestle to pound a large amount of sticky rice into a delicious sweet rice cake. The meal ends with sanbon jime, a rhythmic clapping and ‘thanking’ ceremony, with blessings of peace and harmony. Chamas Enjoy dinner with a difference at Chamas Churrascaria & Bar at InterContinental Abu Dhabi where the finest cuts of meat are served to the beat of Latin music from the restaurant’s resident South American band. There’s a generous array of salads and desserts at dedicated counters, but the prime attraction here is the meat. For those unfamiliar with the concept, Chamas serves up a popular churrascaria where succulent barbecued meat is brought to tables on long skewers and then carved off directly onto the plates by deft waiters, continuing as long as guests choose. One of the highlights is chef Guillerme’s weekly twist on Wagyu beef. It is a constant carousel of delights for carnivores in the city at Chamas Churrascaria & Bar, especially with the addition of free flowing caipirinhas, Brazil’s national cocktail. Al Fanar One of the few restaurants dedicated to authentic Emirati cuisine, Al Fanar Restaurant & Café is akin to taking a trip back in time. Designed to resemble an old neighbourhood, it features historic artefacts, traditional courtyards, mud-brick rooms and al fresco barasti booths that resemble the huts fishermen and pearl divers used to call home. There’s also a range of private dining rooms for larger groups and a small souk on site, so visitors can enjoy meandering along alleyways and taking in the entire experience. The Emirati food complements the ambience with a menu that features delicious soups and salads as well as a variety of grilled meats and seafood. Visitors can select the fish of the day, authentic rice-based dishes, or throw caution to the wind and request recommendations from the expert staff on hand. Dhow spotting For centuries, traditional wooden boats known as dhows were relied upon to keep the UAE's bustling trading ports and markets afloat. Nowadays, waterways such as Dubai Creek and Abu Dhabi's Mina Zayed Port are key points to spot the remaining ships still in use gliding majestically on the water. They remain great reminders of the past and of the deep-rooted traditions that reaffirm the country's long-lasting connection to the sea.

EMIRATES PALACE The iconic palace takes pride of place at the tip of the Abu Dhabi Corniche and embodies the luxury lifestyle the capital has cultivated. Until recently, the most expensive hotel ever to be built, the impressive structure is richly adorned with precious materials. Twelve different shades of marble can be spotted in the cavernous atrium, while the central dome holds dual records as both the largest in the world and the greatest gilded expanse ever created in one building.

My life in Abu Dhabi Sara Stosic, manager of Eight Abu Dhabi, talks about life in the UAE capital

}

1

1 Eight Abu Dhabi at Souk Qaryat Al Beri 2 Abu Dhabi Corniche

Originally from Belgrade in Serbia, I’ve been in the UAE for a few months and already find myself settling in. I’m privileged to live in a city with such amazing weather and am convinced that people here have much happier lives than those who stay in cities with gloomy weather and a lack of sunlight. In my time off, I love going to the beach and walking along Abu Dhabi Corniche. There is a real French Riviera feel to it and it allows me to see and meet people from all walks of life that highlight the melting pot this city truly is. One of my life-long dreams came true this holiday season when I was able to go to the beach, wear light clothing and actually experience higher temperatures in December. I always wanted to spend New Year’s Eve somewhere on or close to a beach and that finally happened. I lived in Greece for eight years so I am very attached to Greek culture and cuisine, which is why Acropolis at Le Méridien Abu Dhabi is one of my favourites. The authentic Greek coffee is a highlight and there are so many delicious specialities on the menu. Another fantastic restaurant in

Abu Dhabi is Iris Yas Island. Overlooking Yas Marina and the F1 track at Yas Marina Circuit, it serves an amazing lobster risotto and lamb fillet, while signature cocktails, including Iris Sin and Cool Shower, are also a must-try for visitors. For special occasions, Hakkasan Abu Dhabi is well recommended. Located at one of the most glamorous hotels, Emirates Palace, the restaurant stays true to its London flagship with its food and service. I highly recommend the grilled Wagyu beef and rose petal cocktail. I really like spending time at Eight Abu Dhabi at Souk Qaryat Al Beri. I lived in New York for 10 years and it’s a city that’s very close to my heart. Eight Abu Dhabi’s chic decor closely resembles New York’s industrial Meatpacking District and has become my home away from home. Eight also has the most spectacular views of Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque – sundowners here are a wonderful experience. Marina Mall along the Corniche is the best for shopping with a nice selection of stores, while Souk Qaryat Al Beri features amazing jewellery stores with Arabic designs that make great souvenirs.
