In many ways, this emirate is several destinations in one, from the rustic charm of Al Ain, the birthplace of the country’s founding father, Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, and the breathtaking vastness of the Liwa Desert in Al Gharbia with its mountainous dunes, to the energising pace and brightness of our capital city. We all share a desire to make you feel as welcome as possible and hope you leave with a positive, lasting impression of our homeland, traditions and people. In the pages of this magazine, you will find an overview of the emirate’s widespread appeal and I’m sure you will find much to inspire and entertain you. —— The 7th Art screening series is a landmark initiative from Abu Dhabi Tourism & Culture Authority (TCA Abu Dhabi) and Image Nation Abu Dhabi that aims to develop awareness and understanding of art and culture in the emirate. “The idea behind the screenings is to discover the cinema world beyond the classical context and to better understand the link between the different forms of art,” explains Rita Aoun-Abdo, executive director of the culture sector, TCA Abu Dhabi. The series’ title comes from the phrase coined by Italian theoretician Ricciotta Canudo who described cinema as the seventh art. He believed cinema was a synthesis of the rhythms of time, namely music and poetry, as well as the rhythms of space – the ‘plastic’ arts of painting, sculpture and architecture. Since its launch in October last year, the series has been hailed for its expertly curated programme with a pivotal focus on art and history. “The screenings held twice a month alternate between showings of The Story of Film: An Odyssey, and masterpieces of world cinema presented in

the context of the art movements from which they emerged. Several of these screenings are accompanied by a brief lecture which helps set the films in their art-historical context. We’ve seen a lot of interest from film and art enthusiasts already and we have recently launched additional screenings that will be hosted at a number of outdoor venues across Abu Dhabi,” says Peter Scarlet, veteran film historian and curator of The 7th Art series. Film enthusiasts can look forward to a fresh line-up of screenings and discussions at Manarat Al Saadiyat, while a new programme of outdoor screenings – The 7th Art Al Fresco – will take place at various locations throughout the emirate. “Audience awareness about the film world is a key part of Image Nation’s mission. Improving the public’s understanding of the history of film will enhance their viewing and help to build a film culture here in the UAE. We are delighted to partner with TCA in presenting this unique series that will give audiences a chance to enjoy seminal films they would otherwise not be able to see on the big screen,” says Michael Garin, CEO of Image Nation Abu Dhabi.

HOUSE OF HERITAGE ——— Contemporary flair inspired by the traditions of the past heralds an exciting new chapter for Aigner thanks to creative director Christian Beck
From a small town in rural Germany, where fashion was at best a second thought, Christian Beck has attained incredible sartorial success and is now at the creative helm at one of the industry’s most respected luxury leather and fashion houses. Trained in traditional tailoring methods, Beck’s bold creative vision complements a passion for design. It’s precisely this combination of skills that makes Beck a perfect fit for a brand that prides itself on blending both the classic and the contemporary. “I grew up in a place where the term fashion was more than unusual, so I wasn’t surrounded by those influences. In the end, it was my art teacher who guided me to study fashion design. She was convinced that I had to go this way. And she was right,” says Beck. The budding designer enrolled at the Fashion University of Trier in Germany where he earned a degree in fashion and soon immersed himself in the industry. Beck recalls: “My university was on the border of Luxembourg and Belgium, so from the beginning, I was in the perfect environment for high fashion as Antwerp and Amsterdam were just a short drive away. At the same time, Trier offered me a calm location where I could develop my own creativity and sharpen my senses. Still today, I need the countryside to help me to get back to the basics.” Part-time jobs during his university years were of course fashion oriented, and Beck worked in the boutiques of Dusseldorf where he gained an important grounding in the industry. His first jobs were at JOOP! a major fashion and cosmetics brand in Germany at the time, and as an accessory designer for prestigious leather goods producer
Goldpfeil. While there, a chance meeting in 2008 with Aigner CEO Sibylle Schön marked the start of a prosperous partnership. Beck rose through the ranks at an impressive pace, and within two years was appointed head of leather and accessories. By early 2012, he took over the entire creative responsibility at Aigner and, as head of design, set about meeting the challenges of reconciling the firm’s rich heritage with a drive towards the contemporary. “I wanted to understand the brand, and to carve out a path, whilst incorporating the DNA of the past. That might sound easy, but it is harder than you would expect. I think it was always important for me personally to accept challenges and to trust myself and the team, and to trust in what we were doing as a whole,” explains Beck. Aigner celebrated its 50th anniversary last year and it’s perhaps a fitting reminder of the weight of history that sits on Beck’s shoulders. The Aigner story starts with Hungarian born handbag designer Etienne Aigner who first gained recognition for his work at the haute couture shows in 1930’s Paris. As the company grew, an identity emerged which centred around the equestrian world and, at a 1950s collection presentation in New York the now iconic horseshoe-shaped ‘A’ logo appeared for the first time. Back in Germany, in 1965, Etienne Aigner joined forces with Munich businessman Heiner H. Rankl and the brand was born. With equestrianism now firmly at the heart of its ethos, Aigner began hosting regular horse races in Munich as the association deepened. Beck says: “The affinity to the equestrian sport has always been there and has always influenced our design, whether it’s the horseshoe

“A COLLECTION CAN ALWAYS BE SEEN AS SOMETHING VIVID WHICH DEVELOPS OVER A LONG PERIOD OF TIME. MY TASK IS TO MERGE THE THREADS IN THE END TO CREATE A HAR MONIOUS OVER ALL PICTURE” logo or our famous saddlebag lines. But we have other important influences too. As most of our manufactures are in Italy we also have a lot of influence from the Tuscan tradition. Our signature colour is the Chianti red which is dedicated to the Italian wine – we consider ourselves to be a German brand with an Italian soul.” Today Aigner boasts 450 outlets all over the world and has successfully extended its reach to womenswear, menswear, watches, jewellery and an assortment of luxury leather goods. An elegant approach to tailoring is felt throughout in a nod to the firm’s original roots. For Beck, retaining a strong sense of the past is an important part of forging ahead. He says: “In our Genesis Autumn/Winter 15 collection, we decided to honour our founder and the anniversary. It celebrated the people, landscapes and music of the country of Hungary. Its colourful traditional garments were a particular inspiration, and the absolute highlight for me was the floral print icon that flowed through the collection as a recurrent theme. At the same time, we felt it met the international trends of the season: folkloristic looks with embroidery, patterns and vivid colours.” For Spring/Summer 16 a fresh approach continues with an inviting colour palette of mint greens, peach and bronze across a stylish edit of handbags. When not mining Aigner’s archives for inspiration, Beck draws on the ordinary scenes of everyday life he encounters while travelling. He says: “A lot of the concepts I create are just little musings from my head, I am probably inspired by the same things everybody else

sees on a daily basis. I’m a big fan of people on the street. Floating through the streets and breathing in the here and now is something I find very inspirational. I love big cities like New York. When I come back from my journeys I’m bubbling over with ideas. Then we hold creative meetings and we find the direction that Aigner should take for the upcoming season. I have a team of great people around me, who follow and inspire me at the same time. “A collection can always be seen as something vivid which develops over a long period of time. My task is to merge the threads in the end to create a harmonious overall picture. You need to have this overview and the eye for what you want to achieve from the beginning, so that nothing falls apart.” Despite a successful foray into fashion, for Beck, Aigner is principally all about luxurious leather goods and signature handbags. The Cybill is one of the firm’s most famous handbag creations. Introduced in 2013, its distinctive angles perfectly blend both the modern and traditional. The new Cybill Metropolitan is limited to just 50 pieces and is inspired by the cities of the world, including Dubai. It’s an ostentatious piece, crafted from ostrich, crocodile and snake leathers with a glossy pink finish. Beck says: “Our Middle Eastern customers appreciate how much work and passion we put into these limited editions. Arabic women have a strong sense of fashion and luxury products, especially for handbags. The woman who chooses an Aigner bag knows that she is investing in a product for life.”

HIGH NOTE ———
Sinfónica de Galicia
Abu Dhabi Classics presents a harmonious season of music from the east and west
Alongside the city’s transformation into a global destination of note is a renewed commitment to promoting and expanding cultural ambitions. This is reflected in the landmark Abu Dhabi Classics concert series organised by the Abu Dhabi Tourism & Culture Authority (TCA Abu Dhabi) that showcases the best of classical music, with a focus on the art of poetry this season. Abu Dhabi Classics’ wide repertoire of programming, which has included performances by renowned Spanish conductor Jordi Savall, Sinfónica de Galicia orchestra and Emirati oud player Faisal Al Sarri, showcases a truly unique blend of works from the east and west.

poetry pl ays an important role in the emir ate’s heritage and is still very much alive in the local communit y
“Music is always a discovery, a way to understand life but yet it does so from very different perspectives. On the other hand poetry plays an important role in the emirate’s heritage and is still very much alive in the local community. In the western world poetry has today lost its position at the centre of society. Ask people from France, Germany or Great Britain to name three contemporary poets and they won’t be able to. The names they will come up with are of poets who lived at least a century ago. The Arab world, in this regard, is completely different. Poetry is still part of daily life and even television poetry competitions are great successes,” explains Dr. Ronald Perlwitz, head of music programming at TCA Abu Dhabi. Abu Dhabi Classics combines music and poetry effortlessly, with works by two legendary composers, Ludwig van Beethoven and Gustav Mahler, in focus for their poetic influence. Certain events on the programme have been specifically based around poetry. In October, Indian poet Gulzar recited the works of Rabindranath Tagore to the accompaniment of musical compositions performed by Ajoy Chakrabarty and, in December, Syrian poet Adonis performed with oud legend Naseer Shamma for an artistic dialogue of note. Beyond poetry, there are more musical highlights to come before the landmark season concludes in May, including concerts by the fantastic Gustav Mahler Youth Orchestra, top baritone Matthias Goerne as well as the Chinese Philharmonic. “The Gustav Mahler Youth Orchestra might not be known by everyone, but it is unanimously considered the world’s best youth orchestra and is a regular guest at the Salzburg Festival. They will stay in residence in Abu Dhabi to rehearse and present the best possible performances at the end of their stay.

“They will also be teaming up with some of the biggest names on the classical music scene: star conductor Christoph Eschenbach, cellist Gautier Capuçon, violinist Frank-Peter Zimmermann and a great rising name on the German music scene, conductor David Afkham,” says Perlwitz. Perlwitz admits that while music has always been of great relevance in the world, the role of classical music has indeed shifted today. “In the 18th century classical music was the favourite art of the royal courts in Europe, and by the 19th century it became the very expression of the bourgeois culture and its search for identity. That was the time of big symphonies and opera, but people would also go to these performances to show themselves. Today the situation has changed dramatically and music has become a global business. Classical music has also gained from several business aspects, but one distinct fact remains – that it comes from a time when composers believed in music as an absolute art and not as a means to generate money. Even today classical music carries their ideals and their vision of humanity.
“When we consider the way we listen to music today in general, we listen to a lot but most of it is either for entertainment or in the background like when dining at a restaurant. Classical music brings us back to the real role of music and our ability to understand the world through it. It’s a very active process. It’s like an appeal to understand our feelings and our vision of the world. And we definitely need this today, maybe more than ever.” While visitors to the capital can delight in a number of world-class performances this season, behind the scenes Abu Dhabi Classics also offers a unique platform to promote local talent and nurture the next generation of musicians in the region. “We work on a daily basis with talented Emirati artists, including singers, oud players and piano players, and we try to integrate them as much as possible in the overall concert programme. At the same time, we aim to promote their careers by helping them perform abroad. When looking at the younger generation, we see more and more talented and passionate musicians, which is a great sign. We also regularly bring international performers to schools and universities and it is striking to see the appetite for classical music that exists already at a young age in Abu Dhabi. “In my view, the United Arab Emirates has really become the perfect place to explore a different vision of universality. Not a one-dimensional universality but a dynamic one that draws on different identities and embraces varied cultural dialogues. I am sure that many people in the country will be able to connect with this and there is certainly no better way to keep this vital dialogue going than with music. Considering all these factors as well as the great talent coming from the region, I really think classical music has a bright future in this country.”

the finish line ——— This month’s photo essay features local artist Michael Arnold as he captures the majesty of horses in motion

“I have always had a connection with horses. Living and working in Dubai has brought me even closer to them in all set tings – r ace tr acks, polo fields and in the desert. They have a m averick qualit y about them”
In my art studies I was taught to see and understand the interplay of form, shape, colour and light. When studying horses I look for these qualities to discover the essence of the horse. My sketches attempt to reveal the power of their musculature and the unpredictability of their movement
Equestrian portraits are not necessarily the obvious choice for architect turned artist Michael Arnold, having found local renown mostly for his distinctive depictions of some of the UAE’s most famous buildings. Yet his new, much-anticipated series on horses is a stunning study of these majestic animals, and it’s precisely this impeccable eye for detail that has resulted in a beautiful body of work. From his studio, tucked away down the labyrinthine alleyways of Al Fahidi Historical Neighbourhood, Arnold blends a keen understanding and passion for horses, with an appreciation for their place at the very heart of local culture. “I have always had a connection with horses. Living and working in Dubai has brought me even closer to them in all settings – race tracks, polo fields and in the desert. They have a maverick quality about them – a sense that their will cannot be denied even when bridled. When the rider is in the same mind set, the horse and rider become one, that combined spirit is beautiful. I try to capture these moments in my polo and racing works,” says Arnold.
40
For the new series, the artist applies his signature monoprint technique to a variety of genres within the subject, including polo and horse racing. For the monoprints, Arnold starts off with a sketch of the horse before using layers of foil and oil paint to complete unique versions of the original. This allows him to capture intriguing variations of each subject. It is very much a labour of love, as he returns to a theme he loved as a child. Arnold says: “Whether racing freely over the dunes of the empty quarter or on the rolling green fields and hills of a Kentucky farm, whether racing head-to-head at Meydan or competitively challenging each other on the polo pitch, a horse embodies and symbolises the energy of free spirit. “They are beautiful, strong, graceful animals, magnificent in form, structure and complexity. Since my early childhood, I have always had a fascination with horses, specifically horses in motion. There was a connection that I felt to their seemingly wild and uncontrollable energy, to their wildness and free-spirited attitudes.
P h o t o e s s ay / Ex p e r i e nc e
41
“I can remember at the age of seven being mesmerised by paintings of the great masters depicting horses in battle. I can remember those scenes to this day from the galleries of the Philadelphia Museum of Art and often return to visit those same paintings even now.” Turning that early fascination into a finished series that depicts each line and movement of a horse has however taken hard work and many hours of research to refine. Arnold explains: “I enjoy the process and challenge of studying the horse, I start with the physical – the musculature, the movements, the body position, leg positions. Then I move to the head and I study the expressions and angles. I observe the focus of the eyes and the position of the ears and try to understand the intentions of the horse. I then set the mood through a variety of sun lighting angles accentuating the position and motion of the horse in an attempt to create drama, and the connection between horse, rider and the setting. I put all of this together in my paintings to create a complete picture of a powerful animal in perpetual motion. “The most challenging aspect is feeling and capturing a moment in a horse’s burst of energy. First, you have to see and select the moment. As a horse is in continuous motion, the challenge is to capture the spirit of the movement and then to freeze it in time. Then you have to take that frozen moment and translate the mental image onto canvas
42
or paper, in the appropriate scale, perspective of motion and proportion of structure. Doing that in a way that captures the spirit of both the horse and rider is key.” There is also a big difference in the approach depending on the style used, and Arnold adapted his technique to capture horses in both oils and monoprint. He says: “Paintings are carefully built up studies of the horse’s form and captured movement; a layering of light and shadow tones, a constant refinement of paint and brush strokes depicting shapes, values, colour and light. From the first few brush strokes and tones, through to the final layer of highlights and tonal values in light and shadow. “By contrast, the monoprint process is not as carefully planned or executed as an oil painting. In monoprinting there is an initial pencil sketch transferring pressure impressions on paper that are then transferred, through the oil paint, onto foil on glass with layered paper. This creates a single positive and negative print, delivering an immediate image of colour interplay between random shapes and colours. I am attempting to capture a flashing moment to create an image during a continuous burst of the horse’s energy.” Michael Arnold’s work will be exhibited during the SIKKA Art Festival from March 13 to 27, at villa 10 in Al Fahidi Historical Neighbourhood. INTERNATIONAL FLAIR ——— Executive chef at Sheraton Abu Dhabi Hotel & Resort, Balveer Balkissoon, invites guests to embark on a culinary adventure
Hailing from one of Mauritius’ picturesque isles, executive chef Balveer Balkissoon’s global travels have culminated in an education of exotic flavours and a true appreciation for diverse cooking techniques. Determined to gain as many new experiences as possible to add to his repertoire, Balkissoon says: “While I worked back at home, I took a month-long leave every year and I travelled to different destinations such as Switzerland, France, Malaysia, Italy, India and the Seychelles to train with local chefs. From a culinary perspective, I found Malaysia the most exciting region as it has incredibly complex customs and cuisine.” He also draws on an interesting mix of culinary influences from his homeland: “The island was colonised by both France and Great Britain so the influence of these countries is undeniable. At the same time, you can also notice the effect of Asian cooking and spices. This diversity creates a very exotic style that is unique to Mauritius.” Arriving in Abu Dhabi five years ago, Balkissoon explains, “I love my homeland so moving away from Mauritius was a major event in my life. It required a lot of adjustment to leave my roots behind but I haven’t looked back since. Spending the last five years in the UAE has been a remarkably fruitful experience. There is a wonderful culinary variety in the Gulf region and I take a lot of inspiration from other cultures.” At the scenic beachfront property of Sheraton Abu Dhabi Hotel & Resort, Balkissoon oversees all of the hotel’s restaurants, bars, lounges, banquet events and catering services. “No two days are ever the same. I start most days checking on the breakfast buffet, planning menus, ordering, scheduling and inspecting deliveries, followed by meetings with my colleagues and suppliers. In the afternoons
and evenings, I aim to spend as much time with customers as possible. From casual beachside barbecues and extravagant Friday brunches to catering for embassies, private parties and wedding meals – they are all on my agenda in any given week.” A melting pot of culinary offerings, there are several dining options to choose from at Sheraton Abu Dhabi Hotel & Resort. In addition to all-day international dining at Flavours, guests can savour authentic Mexican cuisine at El Sombrero, Spanish tapas at Bravo and traditional Italian fare at La Mamma. While it’s often difficult for chefs to whittle down their best dishes to just a few, Balkissoon confesses that it’s the “charcoal flavour and fiery taste” of the flambéed camarones al tequila at El Sombrero and the deliciously succulent tender ossobuco alla milanese at La Mamma that always wins him over. With so much vying for attention, it stands to reason he’s on the look out for new inspirations. “Menu planning always starts with the guests – who they are, why they are here and what they would like to see on the menu. I also get a lot of inspiration from magazines and fellow chefs. It is always exciting to find an idea and make it my own by adding a twist. With a clear passion for food, he tells us cooking has always been in his DNA. “There is a long culinary tradition in our family as we have run restaurants for generations. The key influence in my life was my dad – he had an absolutely amazing style of cooking.” Even today the chef reveals: “If I need to unwind and clear my mind, I get behind the stove. That is my real comfort zone.” For more information and to book a table of at any one of the restaurants at Sheraton Abu Dhabi Hotel & Resort, contact: 02 6773333

HIGH STEAKS ——— Savour top quality fare at five-star steakhouses across the capital
For meat lovers, there’s nothing quite like cutting through a perfectly charred, salty steak crust to reveal a rosy pink centre. The beauty of a good steak lies in its simplicity and high quality origins – a belief that, fortunately, many of Abu Dhabi’s premium steakhouses hold dear. Whether it is a fullflavoured Blackmore Wagyu from Australia or prime mid-western cuts from the States, purchasing the best cuts of beef from across the globe is paramount to these restaurants. When it comes to choice of meat, diners will find an edit of expertly chosen cuts, from soft, succulent tenderloins to a perfectly plump rib-eye. Those who consider themselves steak gourmands will be pleased to see the appearance of significantly marbled beef on several menus, with the high grade enhancing the overall velvety texture and mouthwatering taste. For an elegant evening out and steaks that pack a punch, we present some of the best steakhouses in Abu Dhabi.

—— Hailing from the sunny shores of Los Angeles, BOA Steakhouse proudly keeps much of its focus on American-inspired dishes and fabulous prime mid-western cuts. Think succulent rib-eyes and 35-day dry aged New York Strip. Much like its West Hollywood and Santa Monica counterparts, BOA Steakhouse’s first venue in the Middle East enjoys a prime location as the capital’s famed mangroves provide a scenic background to its waterside spot along the Eastern Mangroves Promenade. The restaurant’s turf section is peppered with premium grills, including the Blackmore Wagyu with a marble score of 9+ and Master Kobe beef as well as an impressive Porterhouse weighing in at a hefty 670 grammes. All cuts are offered with either a rub, such as tri-peppercorn, or you can pair your steak with homemade sauces including BOA’s signature J1. With so much to tempt the taste buds it’s understandable that you may struggle to whittle down your choice to a single dish. In which case, try the newly launched Friday brunch packed with some of the best-loved dishes. BOA’s al fresco terrace makes a great spot for post-brunch sundowners.

Forging is the elaborate procedure in which a high quality blade, such as a steak knife, is shaped and crafted. So, as you’d expect from a restaurant that takes its name from such a specialist process, The Forge holds all things meaty at the heart of its culinary philosophy. The kitchen is helmed by Argentinian-born chef de cuisine Gerardo Recabarren who honed his craft at stateside restaurants from Florida to North Dakota. Promoting an impressively global feel, menu highlights of French Charolais beef, Spanish Iberico beef, Canadian veal, Australian Wagyu Tomahawk and Welsh lamb, are served alongside a choice of plump lobster tail, foie gras or bone marrow. For a twist on an old favourite, the chef also recommends the ‘Wow’ Wagyu beef burger decadently dressed with pan-fried duck liver and truffle sauce. Located within The RitzCarlton Abu Dhabi, Grand Canal, the venue itself radiates a refined sense of style with plush interiors and warm lighting. For special occasions, why not elevate your experience and book into one of The Forge’s three private dining rooms.

Set within the indulgent confines of Sofitel Abu Dhabi Corniche, So SPA offers several liquidbased therapies that hone in on the importance of keeping the body hydrated. Feel your worries ease away as you sink into an indulgent 45-minute milk bath. Infusing Shiffa products with aromatic rose extracts, the bath aids relaxation while leaving skin feeling ultra soft and nourished. The spa’s signature 90-minute Turkish bath also offers a great way to unwind. As soft steam envelops the body, a skilled therapist uses black soap to effectively exfoliate the body. Infused with shea butter, this rich antioxidant soap also treats skin problems and irritations before the session draws to a close with a fragrant massage. Contact: 02 8137777

EMBRACE THE ELEMENTS Channel a back to basics approach at spas across the capital
—— DOWN TO EARTH
Located within Dusit Thani Abu Dhabi, Namm Spa seeks to create a memorable visit through holistic pampering. If travels have taken their toll, now’s the time to try the caramel sea mud body mask. A fantastic pick me up for jet-lagged bodies, the treatment uses a mineral-rich Dead Sea clay wrap to relieve muscle pain and relax stiff limbs. Suitable even for sensitive skin, the wrap’s natural elements help rid the body of excess water and reduce the appearance of cellulite. We also recommend the pink kaolin nourishing body mask to hydrate parched, sun damaged skin. Contact: 02 6988888

Located in the luxurious Park Hyatt Abu Dhabi Hotel and Villas on Saadiyat Island, the spa takes its aesthetical lead from the beauty of Arabia while treatments highlight the latest in innovation. The oxygen awakening facial is a clear example of this contemporary approach. As global jet setters will know, it doesn’t take long for the strain of constant travel to show on the skin’s appearance, making this treatment especially prevalent for frequent flyers. The facial decongests, oxygenates and reinvigorates the skin using delicate massage techniques alongside products that have been especially designed to promote the release of pure oxygen into the skin’s outer layer. The overall effect encourages cell renewal to create a lighter and brighter complexion leaving the face looking and feeling younger. Contact: 02 4071170

As the name suggests, Zen the Spa at Al Ain Rotana seeks to bestow its visitors with a sense of serenity and relaxation while in the oasis city. Drawing on the expertise derived from holistic Asian philosophies, the spa’s signature hot stone massage uses expert movements and hot volcanic stones to ease deep-seated muscle tension. Warmth is often used to not only relieve chronic pain but also create a calming effect. While massage points can be tailored to treat each individual’s main areas of concern, the hot stones are positioned on precise acupressure points. As the muscles warm and relax, they become easier for the therapist to manipulate. Also home to a sauna, steam room, plunge pool and hammam area, Zen the Spa is the perfect place to while away the day. Contact: 02 5961100

EMIRATES PALACE The iconic palace takes pride of place at the tip of the Abu Dhabi Corniche and embodies the luxury lifestyle the capital has cultivated. Until recently, the most expensive hotel ever to be built, the impressive structure is richly adorned with precious materials. Twelve different shades of marble can be spotted in the cavernous atrium, while the central dome holds dual records as both the largest in the world and the greatest gilded expanse ever created in one building.

the world’s largest area of continuous sand, Rub Al Khali, which is also known as the Empty Quarter desert. Al Gharbia hosts a number of prominent cultural events and festivals, including the Tel Moreeb festival that sees participants compete in desert driving races, Al Dhafra Festival that hosts the world’s only camel beauty contest, a Dates Festival that showcases different varieties of the fruit, and the Al Gharbia Watersports Festival that sees teams from all over the country compete in exhilarating dragon boating, kite surfing and dhow races. Located in the region, Tilal Liwa Hotel is a wonderful base from where visitors can explore the best of Al Gharbia. Our hotel organises adventure and desert activities for visitors to enjoy, including dune bashing, sand boarding, cycling through the desert, horseback or camel riding and even quad-bike safaris that will see you career across sand dunes on an all-terrain vehicle. For those keen on a slower pace, we aim to bring the best of Arabic tradition and culture to life with interactive activities such as trips to camel farms, desert walks, star gazing and more. After a long day spent exploring and making the most of the desert location, visitors can unwind back at the hotel’s stunning infinity swimming pool or book in for a relaxing massage at our Body & Soul spa. Tilal Liwa Hotel also boasts a number of restaurants that present a world of cuisines. Enjoy dinner at Al Badiya restaurant that offers contemporary and regional cuisine or dine at Layali, an intimate restaurant with live entertainment. Cadirvilu Harinathan, head concierge at Tilal Liwa Hotel, encourages visitors to discover the Western Region of Abu Dhabi
As the capital of the United Arab Emirates, Abu Dhabi offers visitors a host of unforgettable experiences across its varied landscapes from the sea to the desert. The emirate also regularly stages cultural events that celebrate its unique heritage alongside major international concerts. There is also a wide variety of leisure activities that include famous theme parks such as Ferrari World Abu Dhabi and luxurious shopping malls such as The Galleria on Al Maryah Island, Marina Mall and Yas Mall. I believe Abu Dhabi is making great strides across hospitality, business, sustainability and tourism and is emerging as one of the best destinations to visit in the world. No matter the season and time of year, there’s always lots to see and do but for a completely unique experience, a visit to the emirate’s Western Region, also known as Al Gharbia, should not be missed. About two and a half hours away from Abu Dhabi city by car, Al Gharbia comprises more than two-thirds of the emirate. This is the area where ‘the desert meets the sea’ with miles and miles of unspoilt beaches and Liwa, the site of
