We in the UAE capital believe our homeland is something of a welcome contradiction for travellers. It is a place where deep-rooted Arabian heritage is deftly woven into a rich destination tapestry complete with luxury accommodation and world-class leisure attractions. Abu Dhabi is blessed with a diverse landscape. We have 400 kilometres of pristine coastline, over 200 natural islands, vast tracts of serene desert, tranquil oasis towns and a vibrant, cosmopolitan capital city. I hope during your stay you are able to experience as much of this variety as possible. In many ways, this emirate is several destinations in one, from the rustic charm of Al Ain, the birthplace of the country’s founding father, Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, and the breathtaking vastness of the Liwa Desert in Al Gharbia with its mountainous dunes, to the energising pace and brightness of our capital city. We all share a desire to make you feel as welcome as possible and hope you leave with a positive, lasting impression of our homeland, traditions and people. In the pages of this magazine, you will find an overview of the emirate’s widespread appeal and I’m sure you will find much to inspire and entertain you. I wish you a relaxing, enjoyable and memorable stay in Abu Dhabi.

LEADING THE WAY ——— Concierge talks history and heritage with Longines’ president Walter von Känel

In January Longines launched the official countdown to the Dubai World Cup by timing the opening night of Dubai World Cup Carnival, which includes 10 exciting race meetings before the event’s main day on March 25. As the official timekeeper, official watch and official partner of Meydan Racecourse, Longines long association with the prestigious event is one that taps into the maison’s enduring passion for equestrian sports. “Longines has been committed to equestrian sports since 1878. It is thus natural that the brand decided to launch a collection dedicated to this long-lasting passion: The Longines Equestrian Collection. The Longines Equestrian Pocket Watch Jockey 1878 is also part of this collection and perfectly illustrates the brand’s strong devotion to tradition,” says Walter von Känel, president of Longines. This connection to the world of equestrian sports has also helped endear the watchmaker to the United Arab Emirates, a nation that shares a similar passion. Walter von Känel reveals that he is proud the brand is “growing substantially” in this part of the world. With a heritage that dates back to 1832, Longines is no ordinary brand. The Swiss watchmaker has the honour of having the oldest brand name in use and it’s one that tells the story of its illustrious origins. In 1832, Auguste Agassiz joined a trading office established in Saint-Imier

in Switzerland, which remains the base of Longines even today. He rose up the ranks and the company was renamed Agassiz & Co., producing timepieces under the établissage system that saw watchmakers work at home and supply their creations to trading offices. Over time his nephew, Ernest Francillon, took over operations, and came up with the idea of bringing all the stages involved with watchmaking under one roof. Francillon bought two adjoining pieces of land in 1866 on the right bank of the River Suze, which was known locally as Les Longines. This name was then adopted by the factory built there in 1867. Decades of innovations, expansion and world acclaim followed. Today, as part of Swatch Group, Longines’ visionary approach continues to shine through as Walter von Känel explains: “Our brand has respected three values in its history: elegance, tradition and performance. Since the beginning, those elements are mirrored in our collections and present in all our activities; they are part of Longines’ DNA. “I like to describe watches as emotional branded consumer goods and Longines has always respected its DNA in the aesthetics and philosophy of its products. Longines’ signature consists of a truly timeless elegance based on a rich heritage that keeps up-to-date with a blend of refinement and classicism,” explains von Känel who has been at the helm of Longines since 1988.

“My role consists of waking up very early to be able to take care of the paperwork and be available for my teams. I go in the field and travel very often, talking to the local people. I do not stay behind a computer writing never-ending e-mails. Actually, I do not use a computer at all,” says von Känel. “At the beginning of my career, the manufacturing managers were dictating the offer of watches. Nowadays the consumers’ desires are translated into the collections a brand presents. “There have been a lot of changes in the whole watchmaking industry, in particular with the creation of the Swatch Group that transformed the watchmaking industry deeply. Before this, the technical developments used to command the markets, and afterwards, technical development had to adapt itself to market needs. Longines is proud to be an important member of the Swatch Group.” Famous personalities that span the worlds of sports, arts and entertainment, including Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and Kate Winslet, are honoured as Ambassadors of Excellence for Longines. They are each carefully chosen to reflect the inherent values of the brand. “Kate Winslet joined the Longines family in 2010. Like all our Ambassadors of Elegance, she embodies our identity and our image around the world. Over the last six years, Kate has personified the Longines motto ‘Elegance is an attitude’. Kate has also demonstrated an elegance of the heart through her work with the Golden Hat Foundation, a non-profit organisation that she co-founded in 2010 which is dedicated to changing public perceptions of people with autism,” explains von Känel.

24

A pioneering collection that blends past and present, Longines’ Heritage collection – which saw the addition of standouts such as Heritage 1969, Railroad and Heritage 1918 this year – remains one of the watchmaker’s key pillars, as von Känel explains. “We started our Heritage collection in 1987 almost 30 years ago. At the time, we were among the first watch brands to go with this trend. Today, the Heritage segment is one of the five pillars of our collection, the others being Elegance, Watchmaking Tradition, Sport and Equestrian. These five pillars reflect our values and we are lucky to have such a long history of watchmaking to rely on. For the Heritage models, we draw our inspiration from historical pieces to reissue models using modern technologies. With its unwavering commitment to excellence, centuries of tradition and exceptionally crafted timepieces, Longines has a bright future ahead, which the company continues to steer towards. “For me, there are three keywords: continuity, consistency and focus. Longines is the leader in its price segment – 1,000 to 3,000 Swiss Francs – and maintaining this position is our main objective.” ——Discover the latest Longines timepiece collections at the Rivoli boutique in Abu Dhabi Mall. SET SAIL ——— Azimut Yachts prepares for the Dubai International Boat Show

Azimut Yachts, part of the Azimut|Benetti Group, is renowned for its luxurious range of 34 -120 feet yachts that reflect the finest in contemporary design and functionality. The company will take part in this year’s edition of the Dubai International Boat Show, which takes place from February 28 to March 4, where it will host the world premiere of the new Azimut Grande 35 Metri and showcase a wide range of models through their official distributor for the United Arab Emirates, Seas & Deserts Group. BEST IN CL ASS

—— The Azimut 77S, the Azimut 80 Fly and Azimut Grande 95RPH are just a few of the standout models from the company’s portfolio. The latter is a definite highlight as the high-end Azimut Grande 95 RPH boasts a raised pilothouse, providing more space for the main deck interiors – both in the generouslysized saloon and in the owner’s cabin, which is located on the bow, granting panoramic views with full-height windows along the sides. The elegant interiors of the 28-metre Grande 95RPH are custom designed by Studio Salvagni Architetti and can comfortably seat 10 people. Guests can also unwind in one of four VIP cabins with private baths or make the most of the 65square metre flybridge, which can be reached by two stairways. The boat has a spacious exterior dinette designed to encourage socialising, as well as a corner bar, Jacuzzi and a comfortable sun pad complete with modular seating for multiple configurations. Meanwhile, to the stern there is a garage with a pivoting platform and davit for a Willliams Dieseljet 445 with automatic inflation system to house a four-metre tender or Jet Ski.

GOOD SPORT

—— The Azimut Atlantis collection of sport cruisers is also extremely desirable, reflecting the perfect combination of sporting spirit and Italian creativity. Ranging from 34 to 58 feet, these models represent the best choice for those in search of high-quality performance and sleek aesthetics.

The boat has a spacious exterior dinette designed to encour age socialising, as well as a corner bar, Jacuzzi and a comfortable sun pad complete with modul ar seating For more sporting options, the Azimut S collection won’t disappoint. These elegant and super fast yachts, which come in varied sizes of up to 77 feet, combine comfort with innovation. The exteriors boast the use of carbon fibre and opening hard tops. One of the collection’s highlights is the Azimut 77S, which is designed like the rest of the S Collection by Stefano Righini – with Carlo Galeazzi responsible for the interiors – but also features many distinctive features from the Azimut sport yacht range. What sets the Azimut 77S apart from other models are two exclusive features: its pivoting stern platform and the double open air areas, one fore and one aft. There are also two very spacious open air living areas on board the Azimut 77S. The traditional aft cockpit with a sunbathing area of eight square metres, a dining table for as many as eight and a kitchen-bar area with a barbecue, fridge and ice-maker. Meanwhile, the fore cockpit remains secluded, even when docked, and features a large sofa, coffee table and all the space needed to relax. The efficiency of the new high performance hull combined with the three Volvo Penta IPS 1200 engines (900 HP each) guarantees top performance matched with excellent fuel consumption ratings.

WORLD OF CHOICE

—— When it comes to flybridges, Azimut stands out from the crowd courtesy of its powerful hulls, big windows with distinctive contours and innovative living solutions. The Azimut Flybridge Collection, featuring 13 flybridge motor yachts from 42 to 100 feet, presents exceptional attention to detail. The Azimut Magellano collection is also note worthy. These fast semi-displacement yachts, from 43 to 76 feet, are ideal for long cruises. Unique in the yachting world, models from the collection can act as either displacement or planing hulls. The new Azimut 80 is an exclusive on-thewater spa. It offers exceptional comfort: four cabins, five bathrooms and a 42-square-metre flybridge. With the honour of being the first yacht over 72 feet designed entirely at Azimut’s headquarters in Avigliana, Italy, the Azimut 80 has been crafted with luxury lifestyle in mind. Discover all this and so much more at the Dubai International Boat show.

Step back in time ——— Relive the region’s treasured past at Abu Dhabi’s Heritage Village

To truly appreciate the extraordinary progress Abu Dhabi has made over the past few decades, visitors need to better understand its past. As new modern-day developments continue to spring up across the capital, transforming this once sleepy fishing village into a global hub for retail, culture, business and leisure, the city moves further and further away from the desert outpost it once was. At Heritage Village, perched along the Corniche Breakwater, visitors are given the chance to explore the city’s not-so-distant past and marvel at the extent to which it has changed since oil revenues transformed the emirate’s fortunes in the 1970s. The simple existence carved out by the Bedouin folk, who settled here to make a living from the sea in the late 1700s, is epitomised by Heritage Village’s barasti huts and goat-hair tents, once the only real form of protection against the desert’s unforgiving elements. Take the time to wander around recreated Bedu tents, traditional houses and charming stalls. Browse through the selection of historic photographs that depict the old ways of life and watch as master craftsmen display their skills in everything from Al Sadu (traditional weaving) and glass-blowing to pottery. There’s also the opportunity for visitors to try their hand at the handicrafts themselves if they wish. With a variety of handmade items for sale it’s a wonderful place to pickup unique souvenirs. Be sure to stop by the small souk, which offers a great selection of spices, handmade soap, silver jewellery, antiques and more. While henna tattoos, interactive workshops and camel rides all add to the village’s vibrant atmosphere.

DUBAI WORLD CUP

P h o t o e s s ay / Ex p e r i e nc e

race to glory ——— The 22 edition of Dubai World Cup promises plenty of revelry nd

41

From seasoned race-goers to equestrian enthusiasts and trackside stylistas, Dubai World Cup brings together a melting pot of fans eager to revel in the electrifying atmosphere of the world’s richest day in thoroughbred racing. Now in its 22nd year, the event is a firm fixture not only on the city’s sporting calendar, but also on the global stage. While Dubai World Cup Carnival’s 10-week race schedule officially began in January, anticipation has been steadily gaining momentum for months as the hard work and dedication from all those participating culminates in the run up to the big day on Saturday March 25, by which point the excitement will no doubt be palpable. Held at the prestigious Meydan Racecourse, Dubai World Cup day features nine group races worth US$30 million in prize money, with the final race on the card – the Group 1 Dubai World Cup – carrying a prize purse of US$10 million. Dubai Kahayla Classic kicks off the event’s exciting schedule, along with other significant races including the Dubai Gold Cup, Dubai Golden Shaheen and the Longines Dubai Sheema Classic with a sizeable prize fund of US$6 million up for grabs. With the world’s leading owners, trainers and jockeys all vying to be part of the action, the line up this edition brings together the best of the best from across the globe, including participants from Godolphin stables founded by HH Sheikh Mohammed bin

Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the United Arab Emirates and Ruler of Dubai. Since the competition’s return to a dirt track in 2015, rather than the all-weather synthetic Tapeta surface that had previously been favoured at Meydan Racecourse, there has been a resurgence in American racers. HH Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum’s Prince Bishop from Godolphin Stables stormed to an unexpected victory the same year, while American thoroughbred California Chrome, trained by the father and son team of Art and Alan Sherman, won the title in spectacular style in 2016. Regarded as the highest-earning American thoroughbred of all time, California Chrome is nearing retirement so anticipation is already reaching fever pitch among fans eager to see what’s in store for this year’s edition. “The Dubai World Cup Carnival continues to attract some of the most exciting horses in global racing,” says Malih Lahej Al Basti, Meydan Group vice chairman and chairman of the Meydan Racing Committee. “This season we made some changes to the Dubai World Cup Carnival programme and we are pleased with the response from the racing community. Meydan represents the world stage of horse racing and we are delighted to welcome back many returning horses and connections as well as fresh challengers for the new season.”

Horses have excellent 360-degree vision and can reach speeds of up to 60 kilometres per hour. With typical thoroughbreds weighing in around 1,200 pounds (544 kilogrammes), a jockey’s skill lies in handling the powerful animal masterfully right from the start through to the finish line.

43

The historic Swiss manufacturer Longines is also the official timekeeper, official watch and official partner of Meydan Racecourse, which means that all nine races during the Dubai World Cup are timed by the brand. Winners of key races are also gifted iconic Longines timepieces. The storied maison’s passion for equestrian sports dates back to 1878 when Longines created a chronograph engraved with a jockey and his mount.

while all eyes rem ain fixed on the horses throughout each r ace, there’s plent y on offer to entertain as r ace-goers wait for the next heat Among the changes include the minimum purse for a Dubai World Cup Carnival Handicap now standing at US$100,000 while the Dubai World Cup day Al Quoz Sprint has been increased in distance from 1,000-metres to 1,200-metres and replaces the Dubai Golden Shaheen as the UAE leg of the Global Sprint Challenge. Other changes include the increase of prize money across the Dubai World Cup Carnival by US$467,500 over the 10 meetings, including Super Saturday. Aside from all the action on the track, there is also an incredible hospitality offering and while all eyes remain fixed on the horses throughout each race, there’s plenty on offer to entertain as race-goers wait for the next heat. From private terraces with unbeatable views of the track to premium lounges where guests can enjoy meals and beverages, there is ample opportunity for those looking to enjoy the event in five-star luxury. Popular with corporate guests and networking parties, the Turf Suite on Level 4 of the Meydan Grandstand presents a lavish private dining area with outstanding views of the finish line for 300 to 500 people. The First Class Lounge and Falcon Suite are also exclusive venues that offer fabulous vistas of the track from the terrace and balcony.

If you’re after a grandstand view, head to The Premium area. Perfectly positioned opposite the finish line, it boasts a variety of food and beverage kiosks. Ahead of race day, those with a passion for all things equestrian should try the Breakfast with the Stars package. Taking place at Meydan Grandstand Apron Views, get an inside look at some of the Dubai World Cup contenders as they prepare for the event with morning track work, as you tuck into a sumptuous al fresco buffet breakfast. The Apron Views is another spot where guests can catch all the post-race entertainment and the fireworks display on the big day itself. With previous headliners including Kylie Minogue, Jennifer Lopez and Janet Jackson, the concerts are always guaranteed to be a big draw. It’s not just the horses that go head to head on race day, when it comes to off-track fashion the competition has been known to be just as fierce. From the ladies donning extraordinary hats and fabulous frocks, to dapper gents turned out in their best suits, each year the city’s style set comes together to battle it out for the crown of best dressed at the Jaguar Style Stakes. With equestrian history once again set to be made at Dubai World Cup, Meydan Racecourse is the place to be and be seen.

DATEs WITH HISTORY ———

Concierge visits date farms across the country to discover more about this beloved fruit

Dates have been consumed in this part of the world for thousands of years and were a vital lifeline for Bedouin tribes surviving in the harsh, arid desert environment. Still revered in the region today, the fruit remains a regular feature at mealtimes and has become symbolic of UAE culture. It’s a tradition that is based on necessity as well as religion. Dates have a high nutritional profile that provided an essential source of sustenance for early Bedouins surviving against the odds in the desert. “Dates are a power fruit and offer all sorts of health benefits. For a long time, the local tribes relied on them for food and their cultivation in this region dates back centuries,” explains Tina Memic, general manager – retail & operations at gourmet date boutique Bateel. In Al Ain and Abu Dhabi, large swathes of land are given over to date palm plantations, a number of which, some claim, have been there for several thousand years. It’s only very recently, however, that the fruit has begun to be produced for the mass market. There isn’t a long standing tradition of commercial farming in the UAE. Most of the farms in the UAE are small family-run entities that

were started about 40 years ago as part of a social welfare programme designed to settle the roaming Bedu people. Once established, the farms were used as vehicles to distribute surplus income from oil to the people via government-financed development and support initiatives, most of which have since been dismantled. The result today is that many of the country’s nearly 25,000 date groves are hobby farms and, while some fruit goes to commercial markets, much of the yield is still consumed by the larger family or used as animal feed if the quality is poor. Now, the UAE capital is looking to develop this natural resource and the Abu Dhabi Farmers’ Services Centre (ADFSC) is working to reform the capital’s farming system with the aim of encouraging local date producers to harness the massive earning power of their product. The heavy use of water is of particular concern to experts at ADFSC who point to a general misconception among local farmers that the more water lavished on date palms the better. Many of the farms use water to excess, which is disastrous for the health of the trees and the quality of the yield.

visitors can purchase beautifully pack aged boxes of luxury dates from specialised boutiques such as Bateel and enjoy them dipped in chocol ate, sprinkled with nuts or stuffed with candied or ange

The soil structure here is extremely fragile and, when oversaturated, cannot retain the nutrients necessary for the date palms to thrive. As part of ADFSC’s Date Improvement Program, a team of dedicated experts travel from farm to farm educating workers and owners about best practices, including proper irrigation techniques, in addition to offering fertiliser and pesticide spraying services. Slowly but surely, ADFSC is making headway, as one by one the local farmers begin to appreciate the economic potential of their date palms and consequently take better care of them. Larger varieties, such as the glossy Medjool dates, an import from North Africa, fetch the best prices on the market while local tastes tend towards UAE varieties including Khalass, Khenaizi, Fard and Dabas. Here in the UAE, Khalass dates are the most planted and popular as the warm, dry conditions are ideal for cultivation. The date farming cycle begins in January when the palms begin to produce flowers and are ready for pollination. In March, when the fruit starts to appear, farmers thin the stalks by hand to ensure a quality yield. At different times of year the crop is at risk from a variety of pests and

diseases and must be sprayed regularly. After this the fruit is covered with protective nets until harvest time in August when farmers deftly scale the palms using only a rope for leverage. Date palms in the UAE grow up to around 30 feet in height and, if properly cared for, carry on producing dates for up to 150 years. One of the most significant changes in date farming since Bedouin times has been the introduction of modern drip irrigation to avoid over-saturating the soil, which creates ideal conditions for diseases and washes away nutrients resulting in a weaker crop. With over 100 varieties of dates grown in the country alone, there’s a lot for visitors to discover. Fruit and vegetable markets often sells seasonal varieties or, alternatively, visitors can purchase beautifully packaged boxes of luxury dates from specialised boutiques such as Bateel and enjoy them dipped in chocolate, sprinkled with nuts or stuffed with candied orange. A growing number of datethemed products, such as date mustard and date jam offer multiple ways to enjoy this delicious fruit and provide the ideal gift to take home for a taste of Arabia.

Liquid gold ———

Concierge goes on the honey trail to discover the world’s most prized elixir

While there is no way of knowing exactly when honey first came into existence, the world has been under its spell for centuries. Records of cave paintings in Spain from around 7000BCE highlight the first attempts at beekeeping while the ancient Egyptians and Romans considered honey not just a sweetener but a gift worthy of the Gods and a prized healing medicine. Its allure remains just as strong today. For those unaware, honey is the result of a remarkable natural process. Bees collect nectar from flowers, which is altered by the insect’s digestive enzymes and then regurgitated back in their hive. Over time it dries and becomes honey that is then harvested. Considered a superfood for its extensive health properties, honey is an excellent source of essential vitamins and minerals, including vitamin C, iron and calcium, plus antioxidants that help boost immunity. The type of honey produced depends entirely on the flowers honey bees visit and can differ in composition and nutritional value. Dark-coloured honey tends to have a fuller and more intense flavour and is packed with more nutrients than light-coloured honey that presents a much milder flavour. While raw honey is more expensive than traditional store-bought varieties, it is considered to be significantly healthier as the pasteurisation steps involved in the processing of most honey tends to destroy essential enzymes and nutrients. Besides, people have collected honey straight from beehives for centuries and is said to contain more than 80 different health-related proponents in its raw and unprocessed state.

The world’s most expensive honey is sourced from Hadhramaut, a mountainous region in Yemen. It is here that the famed sidr tree flourishes and remains characteristic of the country. Sidr honey is made from bees that feed solely on the nectar from this tree and have a much shorter life span because of this. The honey can only be harvested twice a year which adds to its high value. For thousands of years semi-nomadic Yemeni farmers have climbed mountains in Hadhramaut to collect sidr honey and this practice is still carried out today. No chemicals or machinery are used in the production process, with beekeepers using simple tools such as a knife and a little smoke from dried camel skins to manage hives. The honey is then poured, unheated and raw, into containers that preserve all the benefits of this syrup. The capital sells a fantastic range of honey sourced from different parts of the world. Balqees is one of the best companies for raw Yemeni honey and has a presence at many of the city’s best shopping malls including Marina Mall. The company only works with top suppliers from Yemen through its headquarters in the capital of Sana’a. In Dubai, Blossom Honey at Town Centre Jumeirah and Global Village are also worth a visit for the wide variety available. Top-quality sidr honey can cost upwards of AED1,000 for just one kilogramme and while cheaper versions are also available at markets, they are often mixed with other types of honey. Visitors who are worried about obtaining pure sidr honey can identify the strength of its quality by ensuring the syrup is a dark golden colour with a thick texture and a buttery sweet and rich taste that is enhanced by a warm aroma.

When it comes to finishing touches that pack plenty of glitz and glam, Itan Jewels is often the first port of call for many. Beloved for its dazzling array of bejewelled bangles, bracelets and cuffs the jewellery brand brings new meaning to the expression ‘arm candy’. The brainchild of Haresh Pahuja, joined then by Sudesh Pahuja and Arun Pahuja, Itan Jewels boasts over four decades of jewellery know-how. With a knack for creating pieces that instantly stand out from the crowd, the brand excites with an assortment of designs that illustrate a love of modern day techniques and trends while also paying tribute to traditional designs. Modern memories Qasr Al Muwaiji has watched over the emirate’s heritage heartland of Al Ain for nearly a century. Built in the early 20 th century, the fort was home to generations of the Al Nahyan family including UAE president HH Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan. Having reopened last year after extensive renovation, the historic fort’s restored towers, traditional architecture and panoramic viewing platforms are certainly worth the visit.
