Whether you choose to take to the desert on a safari or discover Dubai’s older districts – such as Dubai Creek, the traditional gold and spice souks and Al Fahidi Historical Neighbourhood – there are so many activities for visitors to enjoy. If you prefer something more adrenaline-inducing, Skydive Dubai offers a thrilling experience. For those who prefer to take to the skies from the comfort of a plane, a seaplane ride is a lovely way to see the city from above. Downtown Dubai is one of my favourite parts of the city. There’s always activity and a buzzing atmosphere, as well as plenty of restaurants to choose from and shops to visit. The Dubai Mall, in particular, has an incredible selection of fashion and leisure options. While in Downtown Dubai, be sure to visit The Dubai Fountain and Burj Khalifa, both of which are great for photo opportunities. There are several fantastic dining options at Four Seasons Resort Dubai at Jumeirah Beach. For seafood I'd recommend Sea Fu. Start with an apéritif at the bar, followed by a nice dinner on the beachfront terrace. Round off the experience with the restaurant’s decadent dessert of dark chocolate and orange cake. If you're heading out for beverages, Hendricks bar is a great option and is famous for its gin carts. Mercury Lounge offers brilliant views, music and cocktails. There are many more outdoor developments in the city to take advantage of. Jumeirah Beach Residence’s mall, The Beach, is very popular and with such wonderful weather at the moment it’s the perfect time to discover Dubai on foot. I’m also a fan of Kite Beach, where you can take pictures of the iconic Burj Al Arab. My tip would be to try visit in the early evening to catch the setting sun.
Cultural cuisine This luxurious new Downtown Dubai restaurant offers the best of Beirut's vibrant dining scene. Em Sherif is one of Lebanon's top dining destinations and the sister venue here in Dubai is just as spectacular. The chic blue interiors are finished beautifully while outside, there are incredible views of The Dubai Fountain. The menu boasts an array of classics cooked to perfection, including hummous, mixed grills and a delicious biryani. When: 8pm to midnight. Contact: 04 424 3000

Tales of Arabia Embrace the lure and legend of Arabic-inspired jewellery with these exotic designs
Frankincense and myrrh may have been among the most treasured possessions of trading merchants in ancient Arabia, but when it came to displaying one’s personal style and wealth, jewellery was the most valued commodity. Not only did it reflect a women’s social and economic status in Bedouin communities, but many pieces were also considered talismans of good fortune. Turquoise jewellery was particularly popular as it was thought that wearing it would ward off evil. While traditional designs were crafted predominantly from silver, and silver alloys with sprinklings of coral and garnet, these days many Arabian-style collections tend to favour gold and precious gems as the preferred choice of materials. Whether you’re looking for an investment piece or perhaps a unique keepsake of a memorable visit to the region, Dubai is home to a haven of jewellery labels and is revered for its remarkable choice of luxury trinkets that capture a contemporary yet authentic Arabic feel.

Al Zain Jewellery Founded in Bahrain in 1930, Al Zain Jewellery is intrinsically linked to the region’s rich pearl diving past because it was during this time that founder Hassan Al Zain began trading in pearls. However, since its humble start, this pioneering brand has branched out into all manner of jewellery design and distribution. With several stunning new collections to choose from, accessory aficionados are truly spoilt for choice. Designed by the brand’s new Bahraini designer, the Arabesque collection takes its inspiration from time-honoured patterns while adding a modern-day twist in the form of 18-carat gold, complex micro-setting and pearshaped diamonds. The Arab Deco collection, on the other hand, champions luxurious Oriental detailing across a range of rich onyx designs that tap into the historic use of chains and tassels. Encapsulating a more modern approach, Al Zain Jewellery also offers the Cordoba collection. A youthful range inspired by architectural motifs and geometric patterns, these pieces use brushed 18-carat gold and pastel-coloured designs to highlight the vibrancy and femininity that Andalusian women are revered for.

Azza Fahmy For former interior designer Azza Famhy, the journey towards creative jewellery began when she stumbled across an art book on classical European jewellery from the Middle Ages. From there, the rest, as they say, is history. Today, Fahmy’s unwavering passion for architecture and art, along with her relentless drive for fresh inspiration, be it a mythical motif, a poem or a piece of literature, has garnered her jewellery brand plenty of worldwide success. Proudly infusing each collection with the spirit of Egypt, the Azza Fahmy label, which was founded in 1969, remains an independent purveyor of handcrafted jewellery. Exploring the intellectual and cultural heritage of Islamic design, the latest additions to the Suma collection are the perfect example of past meeting present. Lovingly crafted by a 200-man team of skilled artisans, each piece echoes the brand’s symbolic sentiment. Discover classic button earrings embellished with clusters of stones and Arabic calligraphy, brightly beaded diamond coin necklaces, aquamarine and gold earrings and inscribed coin charm bracelets that offer a nostalgic nod to times gone by.

VAN CLEEF & ARPELS Midnight PlanĂŠtarium POETIC COMPLICATION
For over a century, Van Cleef & Arpels has combined exceptional craftsmanship with technical innovation in its creations. The Poetry of Time exhibition celebrates the Maison's artistic legacy
37
Van Cleef & Arpels' Midnight PlanĂŠtarium Poetic Complication remains one of the Maison's most stunning timepieces of all time. Having achieved the dream of capturing the wonders of the sky in a wristwatch, the Maison made use of its rich jewellery-making heritage to provide a miniature representation of the movement of six planets around the sun
Midnight PlanĂŠtarium depicts the planets of our solar system using a series of hard stones which are intricately sculpted by hand into spheres of different dimensions and colours before being positioned around a sun in pink gold on the dial. Each of the planets, along with the shooting star in pink gold, is fixed on its own aventurine disc and mimics the length of the planet's orbit. They are set in motion with the help of a complex self-winding mechanical movement that contains 396 parts
The Extraordinary Dials collection of timepieces remains one of the key craftsmanship highlights from Van Cleef & Arpels. With the Cadran Extraordinaire Midnight Constellation Gallus, limited to just 22 pieces worldwide, an intricately crafted rooster is in the spotlight on a mother-of-pearl and white gold dial, adorned with stunning champlevĂŠ and vallonnĂŠ enamel
40
The essence of the Maison's Extradordinary Dials collection is to tell a story in motion. Van Cleef & Arpels has applied all its savoir-faire in the fields of inlaying, stone selection, cutting and setting, lacquering, hand engraving and enamelling to the creation of these precious, dreamlike dials which remain unrivalled in artistry and attention to detail
41
Van Cleef & Arpels' Poetry of Time exhibition, which was presented at The Dubai Mall Atrium last month, featured an enchanting collection of timepieces themed around Poetic Astronomy. The universe and its marvels have long inspired extraordinary creations from the Maison including Midnight PlanĂŠtarium, Lady Arpels Jour Nuit, Lady Arpels Zodiac and Midnight de la Terre Ă la Lune
Van Cleef & Arpels boasts a rich legacy, crafting timepieces that evoke a sense of fantasy and emotion. From the cycles of the sun and the moon to the wonders of star constellations, the Poetry of Time exhibition celebrates the Maison’s commitment to a poetic view of life

Show off your style credentials at the most fashionable occasion of the year, Dubai World Cup WORDS BY
S A R A H J I MAA
Each year the crème de la crème of Dubai’s high society gathers for the highly anticipated Dubai World Cup. Dubbed the richest race in the world, it’s no surprise that legions of residents and visitors step out dressed to the nines in the finest attire for the annual occasion each March. While the event is undoubtedly an impressive showcase of some of the world’s greatest horse racing talent, the Dubai World Cup has become as much a spectator sport for the style set as the action on the track. For centuries, fashion has come hand in hand with horse racing and at an event like this, every detail is taken into account. From equestrian-inspired jewellery that beautifully adorns the ladies to suave timepieces worn by suited gentlemen, glamour and splendour is at the heart of this lavish event. Internationally, a
dress code has always been attached to horse racing events, but the standard at Dubai World Cup is far more demanding than most. Headwear is key and no outfit is complete without a suitable head piece. Expect to witness towering, jaw-dropping hats of all shapes and sizes and sartorial masterpieces that push
the borders of creativity. The best dressed people on the day are invited to take part in the Jaguar Style Stakes competition which awards the best dressed man, woman and couple as well as the most creative headwear. Given the parallels between fashion and equestrianism it’s no wonder a f lurry of

international luxury brands have created stunning horse-inspired collections. One such label, Hermès, expertly combines artistic craftsmanship with the world of horse racing through collections dedicated to the elite sport. The Arceau Cheval d’Orient timepieces perfectly embody this vision through intricate detailing of hand-painted horses that adorn dials. The French brand also recently created jewellery in collaboration with Pierre Hardy that transformed two major equestrian symbols – horse hooves and the riding crop – into exquisite pieces. Rings and necklaces in the silhouette of a hoof are crafted in rose gold and black jade with diamonds, while a traditional leather crop inspires one of the collection’s key pieces – a sparkling platinum necklace. Encrusted with an incredible 3,669 diamonds, this standout piece is sure to steal the limelight.
From equestrian-inspired jewellery that beautifully adorns the ladies to suave timepieces worn by suited gentlemen, glamour and splendour is at the heart of this lavish event
8
For Italian label Gucci, horses have become somewhat of a recurring emblem and the brand’s Horsebit collection – featuring horse-shoe shapes – is proving to be one of the brand’s most popular. Similarly, Ralph Lauren has enjoyed a long affinity with all equine sports and this has inspired many of its launches. This year’s collection features horses in jewellery and timepieces in a way that is both refined and romantic. Luxury Swiss brand Jaeger-LeCoultre never fails to impress with its selection of engraved timepieces that add the perfect touch to any ensemble. The Reverso Polo engraved watch is particularly impressive and features a dual-sided dial, originally created especially for polo players who could reverse the dial during a game to avoid damage. Such pieces are bound sure to take centre stage as Dubai’s fashion elite compete for best in show come March.

THE ESSENTIAL DUBAI WORLD CUP STYLE GUIDE A competition of style as well as speed, make sure you don’t hold back when it comes to fashion or fascinators. For a fail-safe option keep it sophisticated and modest – nothing too tight or above the knee. Think billowing silhouettes in pastel hues or delicate floral prints. Footwear is just as important. Make sure you choose shoes that aren’t overly challenging to walk in and instead opt for lightcoloured options that are comfortable and will take your ensemble from day to night with ease.

Spring into summer Discover the latest trends and leading styles from this season’s most influential catwalk shows
From the stylish stampede at Dolce & Gabbana to Chanel’s feminist fashion statement, for spring/summer 2015, designers have abandoned any sense of restraint as they usher in a season of bold, brave, daring designs. While the procession of extreme designs offered plenty of buzz-worthy moments, this season also heralded significant shifts within the industry. Certainly one of the most talked about was Jean Paul Gaultier’s final ready-to-wear show. Having previously announced he’d be leaving the world of prêt-a-porter to focus on his couture collections and accessories line, the original enfant terrible of fashion bowed out in a suitably flamboyant fashion. With a celebration of his most treasured themes such as 1980’s Madonna, and inspirational fashion matriarchs Suzy Menkes and Grace Coddington, the theatrical ringleader’s final show proved just how much his witty sense of style would be missed. Shortly after Gucci’s spring/summer show, it was also announced that after a decade as the house’s Creative Director, Frida Giannini would be stepping down. British designer JW Anderson made his debut at Loewe. Taking over the reins from Stuart Ververs, Anderson preceded his first show with ambitions of modernising the storied Spanish label and, judging by the absence of the brand’s signature heavy leather pieces and the arrival of sensual silhouettes in raw silks and linen, it’s clear the young British designer is determined to make good on his promises. The catwalks certainly served up a plethora of stylish options for this season. From romantic fabrics and monochrome patterning to exaggerated trimmings and eccentric accessories, Concierge looks at the key trends to ensure the right satorial statement this spring/summer.

That ’70s show There’s nothing quite like a decade dip to enliven a sense of style nostalgia and, this summer, designers revisited the 1970s by revamping classic retro elements. At Etro, models channelled a Marrakech moment, sauntering down the runway in breezy maxi dresses, intricately embroidered ponchos and plenty of festivalworthy paisley. Delicately pleated floor-length frocks were favoured at Chloé and Alberta Ferretti, while Emilio Pucci led the Bohemian tribe with a f lurry of sassy crochet minis, haute hippy blouses, psychedelic shades and knock-out knee-high suede boots. At the other end of the era, disco glam commanded the spotlight at Tom Ford and Saint Laurent with a showcase of decidedly flashy Saturday Night Fever vibes. Consider a wardrobe update of cropped leather jackets, super-lean silhouettes and lashings of high-shine lurex.

True romance
All the trimmings
Soft, sultry numbers are commonplace among spring collections and this season the catwalks were awash with dreamy designs. Playing with texture and transparency, white lace and broderie anglaise reigned at many a runway, including Valentino and Chloé. While French fashion house Chloé took the folksy route with almost vintage-like white guipure lace frocks, Valentino ushered in 18th century artisanal touches with beautiful white eyelet lace dresses toughened up by towering gladiator sandals. Several designers then turned to the ballet for inspiration, namely Giorgio Armani and Alberta Ferretti who both chose to experiment with an ethereal palette of dusty pinks, sumptuous tulle and chiffon. Also coming up trumps were sheer designs in seductive noir – think Bottega Venetta, Dolce & Gabbana and Michael Kors who all offered alluring alternatives to the classic LBD.
When it comes to party trimmings this season, think in terms of exaggeration as ruffles, frills, feathers and fringing all vie for attention. Tinged with romance and unabashed feminine charms, the pieces at Burberry Prorsum and Alexander McQueen show cascades of contrasting hues and exquisite 3D appliqués to guarantee an enviable fashion flush. Luxurious layers were also spotted at Prabal Gurung and Marchesa. Last summer may have seen a resurgence in fringing, yet this season trendy tassels have really come into their own. From subtle edging at Tory Burch to languid braids at Proenza Schouler, the runways were brimming with style inspiration. Although usually reserved for the winter months, lightweight furs and whimsical feather detailing made a surprise appearance. Daring and dynamic, the fluffy creations at Fendi, Gucci and Dsquared2 are also a sartorial dream come true.

This summer, monochrome acted as the perfect canvas for some of the season’s hottest trends. Bold black and white spots exhibited a touch of punk flair at Marc by Marc Jacobs while Dolce & Gabbana kept it flirty with pretty polka dots splashed across svelte dresses and ruffled senorita skirts. Fall’s ubiquitous penchant for plaid gave way to a daintier check. While gingham was seen in several bright summer shades, sassy 1960’s checks at Diane von Furstenberg and Oscar de la Renta offered irresistible versatility.
6

Accessorise all areas No longer an afterthought, accessories are every bit as important as the clothing they accompany. This season these essential extras took on a life of their own as a rise in pop-art inspired prints and graphic patterns equalled serious arm candy. Stella McCartney stepped up her game with a range of ‘Superstellaheroes’ crossbody bags, portfolio
clutches and chunky belts. Brazen bags also made an appearance in the collections of Christian Louboutin, Jimmy Choo and Anya Hindmarch. Alluding to the current trend for edgy activewear, spring/summer 2015 offered laid-back footwear. From high-tech trainers to elegant slingbacks and gladiator sandals, weary feet can rest in a range of cute, comfy flats.

Tough stuff Throw caution to the wind and replace floaty fabrics with spring/summer 2015’s flood of tenacious textures. This season, the fashion world has fallen in love with denim, leather and suede in new and wonderfully imaginative ways. Leading the charge with a host of masterful indigo renderings on the runway, Burberry Prorsum caught the eye of the front row with cropped patchwork denim designs and jean jackets with sheepskin fringing. Far from clichéd, the
jumpsuits at Sonia Rykiel and dungareeinspired silhouettes and oversized buckle detailing at Stella McCartney felt remarkably fresh. Gucci, on the other hand, tapped into the military trend with absolute ease offering a line-up of easy-to-wear denim and suede pieces. Super-supple suede also sashayed down the runways at Miu Miu, Emilio Pucci and Loewe, while butterysoft leather was the fabric du jour at Louis Vuitton, Givenchy and Trussardi.

Swiss watch manufacturer Blancpain, with a history that dates as far back as the 17th century, boasts a fine range of collections. These include Le Brassus and the famed Fifty Fathoms that received a modern update at last year’s Baselworld in the form of the stunning Fifty Fathoms Bathyscaphe Flyback Chronograph – water resistant to depths of 300 metres. The company’s Villeret Collection, which gets its name from Blancpain’s native village
of Villeret, remains one of the company’s most classic lines and, this year, the collection is joined by a refined grand date complication timepiece. The new Blancpain Villeret Grande Date stands out with its date display that features two adjoining windows to maximise readability. It features a red gold 40-millimetre case, an opaline dial with Roman numerals, red gold hands, the date display at 6 o’clock and a clear sapphire caseback offering a view of the complex movement.

Harry Winston American luxury brand Harry Winston was founded in 1932 and quickly revolutionised modern jewellery design. The company ventured into the business of watchmaking in 1989 before opening a dedicated Manufacture in Geneva which, today, crafts timepieces that reflect fine aesthetics and bold design. One such example is the use of feathers in artistic placement, once again in the spotlight in the new Midnight Feathers Automatic 42-millimetre timepiece from the Harry Winston Midnight Collection. Resembling textured fabric, feathers are carefully selected and shaped before being placed in an artistic motif that plays on alternating colours on the dial. Breguet
5
Founded in 1775, Breguet is one of the world’s oldest watchmaking manufacturers. It remains renowned for its innovations, including the 7027 model from the Tradition Collection that was launched a decade ago – the first timepiece to showcase the mechanism of the movement on top of the baseplate. This year welcomes a new model to the Tradition line: Automatique Seconde Rétrograde 7097, which is inspired by the famed ‘subscription watches’ that founder Abraham-Louis Breguet first produced in 1796. At the time, these one-hand watches were fitted with a simple movement and sold on subscription. The new Tradition 7097 timepiece reveals the bridges, wheels, escapement, barrel and other components of its self-winding movement that usually tend to be hidden beneath the baseplate, creating a dramatic dial in silvered gold offset at 12 o’clock.

Boasting an illustrious history – Omega was the first watch on the moon and has been the official timekeeper of the Olympics since 1932 – the Swiss watchmaker keeps innovating year after year. Constellation Pluma for women made its debut last year and stood out with an elegant wave pattern engraved on the mother-ofpearl dial, reminiscent of the lines of a feather. This year, Omega presents a new light coral-coloured dial for the 27-millimetre timepiece, decorated with 11 diamond indexes in 18-carat gold holders. The central hour, minute and second hands are also coated with Omega’s white Super-LumiNova technology, so the time can be read in even darker conditions.
Bulgari The renowned Italian house may have only begun producing watches in the 1940s but Bulgari has quickly grown to establish a strong reputation for itself in the competitive watch industry thanks to its refined design aesthetics. Adding a new chapter to its watchmaking history, this year sees a welcome update to the iconic Bulgari Bulgari timepiece with a stunning sapphire blue 41-millimetre dial with a Solotempo self-winding movement, as well as new very feminine interpretations at 26-millimetre and 31-millimetre sizes that are set with diamonds. Bulgari’s Lucea line has also been refreshed with the luxury women’s watch appearing in a new gem-set pink gold version with an alligator strap, as well as in white gold with a diamond-set case and bracelet.

The art of the matter Art Dubai presents a unique opportunity to engage with the emirate’s creative community WORDS BY
OLIVIA CUTHBERT
There is a number of must-attend events on the UAE calendar and Art Dubai is certainly one of them. Now in its ninth edition, the annual art fair is firmly established as a leader in its field and an important stop for industry players on the regional art circuit. However, it’s not just gallery owners, artists, curators and informed art fans that make up the 25,000-plus people who attend this event every year. Since its foundation, Art Dubai has been, first and foremost, a community event and a chance for visitors and residents in the UAE to come and see some of the best art from the region and beyond, engage in cultural workshops and debates and generally enjoy the show. It may have risen in the ranks to stand alongside the world’s major art fairs but, despite a VIP guest list of top gallerists, leading artists, much-admired curators and famous collectors, Art Dubai retains its appeal to the everyday ticket-holder who simply wants to wander through the displays and soak up the spectacle.

The big picture For many, a large part of the fair’s appeal is the sheer number and variety of artworks on display. Last year saw the biggest edition to date with 85 galleries from 34 countries around the world featured. A survey conducted during the 2014 edition revealed that more than 50 percent of attendees felt that it was this diversity and multiculturalism that distinguishes Art Dubai from other festivals around the world. “Art Dubai was the first fair of its nature to be launched in the region and remains the most established. Each year, we showcase around 500 artists and half come from this part of the world – South Asia and the Middle East. The fair is rooted in the UAE and wider region, yet is resolutely global – like our home, Dubai,” says Antonia Carver,

fair director at Art Dubai, adding that, “It is a great coming together of art professionals from around the world but, at the same time, a community event with programmes to appeal to all age groups.” To accommodate the growing number and range of galleries taking part, the 2014 edition of Art Dubai divided the gallery programme into three sections. This includes Contemporary, which revolves around established galleries and upcoming art spaces, and Art Dubai Modern, that this year will be dedicated to influential 20th century masters from

their works in the context of the MENASA region and brings together all the art initiatives across the emirate to unite under the Art Week umbrella,” says Yasmin Atassi, gallery director at Green Art Gallery in Dubai, which is taking part in the Contemporary section of the galleries program this year. “Green Art Gallery has been continuously presented at the fair since 2010 and we have noticed that it is growing each and every year, with increasing interest from both regional and international collectors, as well as curators and museum groups,” she adds. The third section, Maker, is Art Dubai’s curated programme and focuses on a particular theme each year. For 2015, the spotlight is on Latin America and the connections, both historical and current, between this region and the art world. Curated by Luiza Teixeira de Freitas, this will be the largest showcase of Latin American art in the Gulf to date. “Representing the huge breadth of artistic talent in Latin America has been a great challenge,” says de Freitas, adding that: “The selection of artists from across the region and across many creative disciplines provides a very unique insight into this thriving and exciting scene.” The 2015 edition of Art Dubai will be even bigger than last year’s fair, with more galleries taking part and even more visitors expected to attend. As Carver points out: “The fair just grows and grows. We’ve grown from 40 galleries and around 7,000 visitors in 2007, to 90 galleries

A fair to discover Art Dubai prides itself on having one of the strongest not-for-profit programmes of any art fair worldwide. Its education initiatives, artists’ projects and talks series are designed to provide a platform for upcoming talent in the region and a channel for young people looking to forge a career in the arts. In doing so, the fair seeks to nurture the regional arts scene by supporting and promoting local galleries and art venues. “Dubai is now known as the centre of the Middle Eastern art market, while Art Dubai has the largest not-for-profit programme of any fair, worldwide. With our local colleagues – at the Dubai Culture & Arts Authority, The Cultural Office at d3, Tashkeel, Alserkal Avenue and the local galleries – we’re working together to build up the other pieces of the art puzzle, such as residencies, studios, education, writing and curating,” explains Carver. Art Dubai also performs an important educational role. Children are actively encouraged to follow their creative instincts with initiatives such as The Sheikha Manal Little Artist’s Programme. The aim here is to provide access to skills and ideas for children

These works are commissioned by Art Dubai in collaboration with the residency and projects programme at A.i.R Dubai. Each year, a number of artists from the region and beyond take up residency in the UAE, working together and participating in an interactive programme of talks, screenings, open studios and reading groups to produce pieces for Art Dubai. For 2015, the six artists, chosen via a competitive open call, include Fari Bradely and Chris Weaver, following a year-long residence at Tashkeel, where they have been developing a large-scale sound installation based on their research in the UAE. GLOBAL ART FORUM
A global phenomenon
For 2015, speakers will confront the timely topic of technology in the arts through a programme of live talks and presentations taking place across five days. Every year, the Global Art Forum presents a platform for cultural debate featuring a diverse line-up of expert commentators from across the globe. The title for this year’s discussions, ‘Download Update?’ represents the pressing issue of how technologies are impacting the world of art and culture. “Perhaps nothing makes our lives feel better and worse at the same time than technology,” says Shumon Basar, Global Art Forum director-at-large, adding: “And while it’s humans who theoretically ‘invent’ technology, the truth is that it’s technology that ‘re-invents’ us humans constantly, in ways we aren’t aware of. Download Update? is an opportunity to zoom out and take a screen-shot of the world today, in all its high definition glory and confusion.” For the first time, Global Art Forum will begin in Kuwait (on March 14 and 15) before moving to Dubai from March 18 to 20.
The networking opportunities that Art Dubai affords mark it out as one of the most significant events on the region’s cultural calendar. With high-profile industry professionals from all over the world in attendance, the fair is a unique opportunity to make new contacts and catch up with old acquaintances from the art world. The VIP Programme facilitates this process with a series of dedicated events and its invite-only Collectors Circle. Here, collectors and art professionals rub shoulders in an exclusive environment that offers access to major figures, not only in the art world but the wider cultural sphere, representing all creative disciplines from photography and design to film, music and writing. It’s an initiative that’s felt throughout the fair, not just in the range of galleries and countries represented but in the huge variety of themes and styles on display. It continues with the diversity of the programme and creative fields incorporated and the opinions and subjects being voiced, right down to the cosmopolitan nature of the crowd which grows bigger every year as Art Dubai continues to expand in every direction.

World cup fever The Dubai World Cup remains the crown jewel in the emirate’s calendar as it celebrates its 20th year
Anticipation ahead of Dubai World Cup begins to build many months in advance, and it’s not just here in the UAE. In stables across the world, trainers are preparing the world’s best thoroughbreds to compete for the biggest purse in horse racing, while top jockeys vie for the chance to ride one of them to victory. At the same time, Meydan’s best hospitality suites are booked up by VIP ticket holders keen to take in the spectacular show with all-important views of the finish line. “Dubai World Cup couples first-class horse racing entertainment with first-class hospitality. In addition to this, it speaks to the cultural heart of the UAE and the wider Middle Eastern region. The horse occupies a special place in the hearts and lives of the people of the UAE, and this event is a modern expression of this important heritage,” says Frank Gabriel, executive director of racing at Dubai World Cup. It’s a countrywide celebration of Dubai’s success as a global destination and a chance to show off the best the emirate has to offer with a spectacular display of wealth, prestige and hospitality. Dubai knows how to stage a good show and never is this more evident than at this annual social and sporting extravaganza.

Equestrian excellence Now in its 20 th year, Dubai World Cup is firmly established at the helm of horse racing, not just in the region but on the wider international circuit. The Dubai World Cup race day itself is renowned for being the wealthiest in the world, with a total of US$29,250 million up for grabs, US$10 million of which goes to the victor of the Dubai World Cup race. Other significant races taking place during the course of the day include the Dubai Sheema Classic and Dubai Duty Free, which both offer increased prize purses of US$6 million this year. They are part of the nine races that lead up to the Dubai World Cup and contribute towards the prestige of the day and its status as an unparalleled parade of the world’s best thoroughbreds.
“Dubai World Cup has become an extremely important event on the international racing scene, evidenced by the 27 countries that have been represented here by runners in the past,” says Martin Talty, international manager at Dubai Racing Club. “The meeting is highly respected by the world’s leading owners, trainers and jockeys who all want to be part of it,” he adds. Many of the world’s most prominent racing yards are represented in the Dubai World Cup line up, including the prestigious Godolphin Stables, owned by UAE Vice President, Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum. The local stable has had great success at Dubai World Cup over the years, with six victories to date, including a win last year with seven-year-old African Story.

This year, Goldolphin will have to fight hard to keep its crown as African Story goes up against stiff competition from the likes of Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes winner, California Chrome and the Belmont Stakes, Bayern and Breeders’ Cup Classic winner, Tonalist, among other strong contenders. “The switch in the track’s surface has seen the return of the Americans and it isn’t surprising that runners from the USA are at the forefront of many people’s thinking,” explains Talty. Previously run on an all-weather surface, Meydan has this year switched to a dirt track, a move that has encouraged the return of US contenders for the first time since the race was run at Nad Al Sheba and is sure to increase the competition for other runners.
First-class hospitality Aside from all the action on the track, there is an incredible hospitality offering. While eyes remain fixed on the horses throughout each race, there’s plenty on offer to entertain as race-goers wait for the next heat. From private terraces with unbeatable views of the track to premium lounges where guests can enjoy meals and beverages, there is ample opportunity for those looking to enjoy the event in five-star luxury at the purpose-built venue. According to Martin Bunch, general operations manager at Meydan, the facility was designed to offer guests the ultimate in luxury race-going, coupled with excellent views of the action, so those who come to socialise and see the racing can do both in the best possible environment. Among the hospitality options available to choose from is the Corporate Suite package, which starts from AED6,500 per person.

“This is fully inclusive, from free-flowing sparkling beverages and traditional afternoon tea on arrival through to a sumptuous international buffet, all served in your own private facility with a viewing balcony that takes in the two Meydan tracks,” Bunch says. Corporate clients can also develop the interior of their suite to represent their brand or enhance the guest experience. “In the past this has ranged from carpet & VIP lounges to 10-metre fish tanks and elaborate water features,” adds Bunch. Individual guests, meanwhile, can experience similar offers in the First Class Lounge, which caters to groups from two to 20 for AED3,750 per person. Alternatively, Bunch suggests booking a table in the Tiered Restaurant, where, “From all four levels guests can enjoy a fine dining menu of five courses accompanied by top-class wines while benefiting from unprecedented views of the Parade Ring and racetracks – you don’t even have to leave your seat – it all comes to you.”

The style stakes The horses are not the only competitors parading before the public on Dubai World Cup day. Of equal importance to many in the emirate’s fashion-conscious crowd are the ensembles on show in the Jaguar Style Stakes. This is a chance for Dubai’s best-dressed to strut their stuff and show off their sense of style before a panel of judges in the hopes of winning one of the competition’s prestigious titles.

“Fashion has always played a fundamental role in the world of racing and Dubai World Cup is no stranger to stylish dresses, perfect hair and sophisticated hats,” says a representative from Jaguar Style Stakes. “Every year we see elegantly dressed ladies and gentlemen; with some of the most f lamboyant and exotic hats making an appearance in the Jaguar Style Stakes.” Over the years the prize pool for the competition has amplified with cars and other major awards to be won by the lucky winners. At the same time, the judging criteria and dress code for entrants has grown stricter to ensure that contestants stay true to racing fashion. For the victors, the prizes are enhanced by the prestige of winning one of the city’s most high-profile fashion contests. The spokesman explains: “Being crowned as the best dressed at the Jaguar Style Stakes in front of a global audience at Dubai World Cup brings you to the forefront of the fashion elite in Dubai.”
The global stage Perhaps the defining feature of the event is the cosmopolitan nature of the crowd and the global environment it represents – a quality that characterises the emirate as a whole. “Dubai World Cup is one of, if not the most, important international horse racing events in the world. When the Dubai World Cup was devised through the vision of HH Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, it was to offer Dubai as a place, situated between continents, where the champions of all the other racing jurisdictions could come to test themselves against the best. Hence its name: the Dubai World Cup,” says Frank Gabriel. With more than 80,000 visitors in attendance and over AED30 million in prizes to be won across nine races, not to mention the world-class thoroughbreds, five-star hospitality, high fashion and fine society, it’s a perfect portrayal of Dubai in its element.

Literary landscape With the spotlight on Dubai for the annual Emirates Airline Festival of Literature, Concierge takes a look at the city’s poetic past and its bright literary future WORDS BY
OLIVIA CUTHBERT
As the reader murmurs the closing lines of the poem, a rapt audience breaks into soft applause. Around the camp, people are seated on floor cushions, closely wrapped in warm jumpers to keep out the chill of the desert night. Illuminated by the stars overhead and the soft glow of firelight, the speakers take it in turns to enchant the crowd with their poems in what is easily one of the most transporting experiences of the Emirates Airline Festival of Literature. “Desert Stanzas is our landmark cultural event. We take everyone out to a secluded spot nestled in the dunes, enjoy an Arabian feast and listen to poetry from around the world. It’s a truly magical experience,” says Isobel Abulhoul, director of Emirates Airline Festival of Literature. This year, poets from across Arabia and beyond, including Mourid Barghouti, Imtiaz Dharker, Yang Lian, Victor Rodriguez Núñez and Owen Sheers, will take part. The evening, which was introduced to the festival programme in 2013, brings together different elements of local culture in a way that recreates, in many ways, a typical night at a Bedouin camp. Music, poetry and the sharing of food under the stars were all part of the Bedouin way of life as the tribes undertook long journeys across the sands of the Arabian Peninsula. Desert Stanzas captures the beauty of these simple pleasures and recalls the longstanding tradition of oral poetry in these parts.

Poetic past
1
It’s a practice that dates back hundreds of years to the earliest days of Islam and even before, when nomadic tribes would share news and pass on stories as they sat around the campfire in the evening. Poetry was also used as a form of verbal warfare. The poet, or sha’ir, acted as a kind of early publicist for his tribe and would engage in mock poetry battles as a means of asserting the tribe’s prominence in the region. Competitive poetry remains popular across the Arab world to this day and reality television shows, including the UAE’s Million’s Poet and Prince of Poets, draw huge viewing audiences in the tens of millions. In addition, the fact that many local leaders publish works of poetry, keeps the art in contemporary consciousness, making it a popular form of expression for young Emiratis eager to be heard. “Our favourite verses have been passed down from generation to generation by word of mouth so we have never really lost the passion for poetry that began with the early Bedouin. Emiratis, in particular, use poetry

Encouraging aspiring authors, whether in poetry, prose, play-writing or any other form of literary endeavour, is at the heart of the festival’s programme, which includes the Taaleem Poetry Award for young poets. “Isobel
Abulhoul, Yvette Judge and the rest of the amazing literary festival team have done an incredible job of engendering a love of literature in the region’s adults and children and, with the opening of the Dubai International Writers’ Centre, this will continue and evolve,” says UAE-based author, Rachel Hamilton. The new writers’ centre was launched late last year and is part of the wider Emirate’s Literature Association, which was established in 2013 to promote and foster a literary environment in the UAE. The new facility joins the growing number of literary clubs and institutions that are contributing to the creation of an engaging environment for writers across all fields in Dubai and the wider UAE. “Celebrating the written word is a key part of the UAE’s culture and the Lit Fest is all about encouraging and promoting authors in their literary endeavours across the many cultures that make up the UAE,” says Hamilton, who was the runner-up for the Montegrappa First Fiction Competition at the Emirates Airline Festival of Literature in 2013 and has since secured a book deal with US publishers Simon & Schuster for her novel The Case of the Exploding Loo. This year, she appears as part of the Lit Fest line-up for the launch of her latest novel, The Case of the Exploding Brain. “The Emirates Airline Festival of Literature offers

incredible opportunities to aspiring writers. The authors’ talks provide inspiration, the writing workshops provide skills and the Montegrappa First Fiction Competition offers an open doorway to publication,” she adds. This year, the festival offers enhanced opportunities for aspiring authors to get their work heard. Fforde’s Fantastic Feedback – an initiative by acclaimed British novelist Jasper Fforde – affords a new chance for budding writers to submit the first 1,000 words of a novel via the festival website and then receive one-to-one feedback from Fforde during a 15-minute session. Alongside this is the host of writers workshops, masterclasses and seminars covering all literary pursuits from fiction and biography to historical writing, journalism, theatre and, new for this year, graphic novels.

A festival for everyone It’s not just aspiring authors that stand to benefit from the programme but anyone with a passion for the written word. More than 35,000 people are expected to attend as the seventh Emirates Airline Festival of Literature gets underway, including over 130 top authors from around the world. Among the big names taking part this year is British comedian turned award-winning children’s author David Walliams, who launched proceedings on February 28 with a talk about his books and career. Another highlight is much-loved children’s author Michael Morpurgo, who is taking part in a display featuring life-size puppets of Joey and Topthorn in a War Horse Concert.

A new graphic novel stand at this year’s festival features popular graphic novelists Naif Al Mutawa, Tian, Nabil Abou Hamad, Clément Baloup, Zeina Abirached and Jean van Hamme, who will share the inspiration behind their stories and offer insights into their art. In addition, artists can watch live demonstrations by the festival’s illustrators, including Grahame Baker-Smith, Satoshi Kitamura, James Mayhew and Michael Foreman and glean valuable tips on how to hone their skills. The theme for this year’s festival is ‘Wonderland’, a choice that ref lects the cosmopolitan nature of both the festival and its participants. “Every festival has its own atmosphere and provides a wonderful experience. Dubai is at the crossroads of east and west, aiding us in attracting a truly international line-up of best-selling writers,” says Abulhoul. It’s another leap in the direction of developing a dynamic literary scene in Dubai and reaching out to the wider community of writers across the region. As programmes such as this increasily afford opportunities to upcoming and established writers in this part of the world, the passion among local literary communities continues to develop. As the spotlight falls on Dubai for the seventh annual Emirates Airline Festival of Literature, the city’s status as a hub for creative endeavour grows a little greater and it becomes an evermore appealing destination for writers from around the world to come, create and have their voices heard. The Emirates Airline Festival of Literature 2015 takes place from March 3 to 7 at InterContinental Hotel, Dubai Festival City. For more information visit: emirateslitfest.com. For visitors to the city, all of this means a wonderful array of choice at the hands of some of the world’s most talented chefs. Bringing together avid foodies with international cooking maestros is one of the region’s largest celebrations of all things food, Taste of Dubai. This charming al fresco festival takes full advantage of this month’s fine weather and the lush green setting at Dubai Media City Amphitheatre. Picnic-style tables pepper the grassy slopes which are lined with stalls from around 20 of the city’s best restaurants where a taste of their first-class fare is offered. Behind the scenes, the chefs prepare weeks in advance for the festival before the teams are dispatched to serve up sumptuous plates for festival guests.

Cooking up a storm Conor Hadlington is director of food and beverage at one of the city’s best-loved Cantonese restaurants, Shang Palace at Shangri-La Hotel, Dubai. The preparations for Taste of Dubai are extensive as the team set about showcasing the very best the renowned restaurant has to offer. Hadlington says: “We start off by selecting a menu, putting together a list of equipment and putting together an action plan so everyone has their tasks. We also create new recipes, have multiple food tastings and take photographs of the food. “The biggest challenge is keeping up with the demand in a relatively small space. In Chinese cuisine there is a lot of preparation and delicate techniques involved so it can become tricky to do all this in a small tent behind our stall on the day, but we make it work.” Despite all of the hard work that goes into presenting a fantastic experience for visitors, Hadlington believes it is well worth it for the opportunities Taste of Dubai brings. He says: “I believe festivals like this one are vitally important to spread the word of good food in Dubai, and to educate people so that they know what is happening in the culinary world.

“It is also a great chance for us to introduce ourselves to lots of people who may not have heard of us yet. The exposure to different groups of people that may not know about us or visit us normally is fantastic. Being a part of this great festival is really important in Dubai where so many people come to enjoy and experience new flavours.”
A taste for the theatrical

Another top restaurant participating in this year’s edition of the festival is The Act Dubai. Indicative of the wonderful variety available on Dubai’s dining and nightlife scene, this vibrant venue has truly brought something new to the city since opening in 2013. Blending a cabaret theatre-style experience with the high-end fare served in a gourmet restaurant, The Act Dubai sets the stage for an unforgettable evening. Recreating some of that magic for the festival is executive chef Roberto Gonzales who is passionate about his native Peruvian cuisine served at the restaurant. “Taste of Dubai involves a lot of preparation from the kitchen and service teams, as well as assistance from the PR and marketing teams to prepare and execute from a logistical point of view. We all work together to bring

the best possible experience and outcome as well as represent The Act in the best light, showcasing our unique dining concept and culinary expertise.” In order to best present the restaurant’s culinary offering, Gonzales is faced with the difficult task of choosing just a few dishes to showcase at the festival. He says: “I opt for a selection of our Peruvian signature dishes as this represents the main culinary aspect of The Act 5

Dubai. The dishes also represent a taste of my home country, Peru, and as Peruvian cuisine has become increasingly more popular in recent years, it is important for me to offer customers a taste of traditional dishes. For me, having a guest at Taste of Dubai come to The Act Dubai as a result of the festival is important and a big part of what I consider when choosing the dishes to offer there on the day.” As well as a selection of delicious dishes, The Act Dubai festival stand will also offer a glimpse into some of the incredible performances on the bill at the main venue.
6
Gonzales reveals: “Our booth this year will have some of our talented performers, so that visitors can get a taste of The Act Dubai, particularly, our dinner show concept. Taking place in the evenings from Monday to Wednesday, guests can experience the show at the table with our Peruvian tasting menu as the ‘acts’ take to the stage throughout the evening. We wanted to offer a taste of this for visitors to enjoy and it all adds to the exciting atmosphere. “Taste of Dubai is a great way to meet new people and stay abreast of the industry trends. It is also a great opportunity to showcase our cuisine.”

Recipe for success Now in its eighth year, the three-day festival is expected to attract thousands of visitors to a packed programme of events. This year brings an even bigger line up of restaurants with over 100 bespoke dishes for guests to try across the weekend There’s live music from international bands on the Entertainment Stage, and for those looking to unwind in exclusive surroundings, there is an exclusive VIP area courtesy of British Airways. Positioned right at the heart of the festival, visitors to the VIP Lounge enjoy fast-track entry, two complimentary drinks and a voucher to try three dishes from the restaurant stands peppered throughout the

site. The Beverage Theatre showcases some of the best refreshments from around the world while a special Kids’ Zone is dedicated to child culinary champions, keeping little ones entertained. The Kenwood Cookery School returns this year and is undoubtedly a festival highlight. This special area is an interactive space where guests can get cooking. A range of culinary techniques are taught to participants who can also sample recipes. Another returning attraction is the Chef’s Theatre. This attracts some of the finest international cooking talent and is a space where visitors to the festival can sit back and enjoy a culinary masterclass from the best in the business. Looking to the event’s future, Chris Fountain, of organisers Turret Media says: “The UAE’s culinary scene is constantly evolving and it is important to us that the festival embraces this. We want to make sure we are giving our visitors fresh new experiences and taking them on a different culinary journey each year. Our ever-growing line-up of new restaurants and new chefs allows us to do this, making this year’s event bigger than ever before. We will continue to build on the success of previous years, further securing our place on the culinary calendar as the most popular al fresco food, drink and music festival in the UAE.”

Amongst Dubai’s many world-famous attractions lies a largely unexplored artistic quarter where understated industrial units belie a vibrant cultural scene waiting to be discovered. Al Quoz is brimming with art galleries, museums and studios as the creative space has grown in recent years to become Dubai’s main cultural hub. Artists gather here to present work and exchange ideas at around 20 galleries, which represent an eclectic mix of international styles and genres. A focal point of the artistic activity here is Alserkal Avenue, which occupies a one-block radius and is made up of myriad interconnected streets. Renowned exhibition spaces such as Carbon 12 Dubai, Gallery Isabelle van den Eynde and Green Art Gallery call Alserkal Avenue home while the area also boasts the first private museum in the area, Salsali Private Museum. Elsewhere, The Courtyard is an eclectic space where visitors can expect film screenings, art workshops and a weekly farmers’ and crafts market alongside regular exhibitions.

Dubai is awash with water sports to cool down Kite surfing This sport is so popular in the UAE that the government has allocated a number of special kite-surfing beaches that cater to enthusiasts including Jumeirah's Kite Beach and Jebel Ali Beach. When the wind picks up, kite surfers head to these popular spots to harness the power of the wind and reach speeds of up to 50 knots while performing jaw-dropping tricks. Paddle boarding When Gulf conditions are calm, paddle boarders take to the water. A number of areas prove particularly popular for the sport, such as around the world-famous Burj Al Arab and off the coast of Palm Jumeirah. Scuba Diving The UAE is a haven for underwater explorers and the coastal waters offer a variety of diving opportunities. Divers can uncover deep sea wrecks off the coast of Palm Jumeirah or explore coral reefs inhabited by hundreds of species of sea life in neighbouring emirate Fujairah.

ON TRACK Each year in the emirate, the illustrious Dubai World Cup and its preceding schedule of events, attracts the horse-racing elite from around the world to compete for huge prizes. Boasting a 1,750-metre all-weather tapeta surface track and a 2,400-metre turf track, Dubai’s purpose-built Meydan Racecourse is home to the city's annual horseracing season. The countdown to the eagerly anticipated March finale begins with the launch of Dubai World Cup Carnival on January 8, consisting of 11 race meetings spread over a three-month season. The series of races carries a total prize value of around US$38 million (AED140 million) and offers racehorse trainers a comprehensive preparation programme, carried out on Meydan Racecourse’s dirt and turf tracks. Meydan Grandstand is one of the largest in the world with a capacity of 60,000. Avoid the crowds and book a private box overlooking the racecourse for great views of all the action. Wine, Champagne and spirits are available in most five-star hotels, but be warned, as there is zero tolerance to drink-driving and being drunk in public is a crime, both punishable with a fine and, in more serious cases, imprisonment.

DUBAI CREEK, SOUKS AND DUBAI MUSEUM The heart of the city, the Creek is a stunning spot to catch a glimpse of authentic Dubai. See dhows (traditional boats) ply their trade along the waters while early morning visitors will see fishermen at work on the river banks. Also in this part of the city is Dubai Museum, which makes for a fascinating day out with interactive displays and exhibits charting the emirate’s history from its pearl diving days. Stop by the gold, spice and perfume souks for some traditional treasures before leaving this vibrant area.

My Dubai Architect and jewellery designer André C Meyerhans shares his city highlights
}
1
1 Spice Souk, Dubai 2 Al Nadi Tower in Abu Dhabi, designed by Meyerhans
I hail from Switzerland and have been in the Middle East for 13 years. I enjoy living here because of the diversity, the openness and of course, the sun. The transformation of the UAE over the past decade has been truly incredible. What’s inspiring is that a confident vision, which would seem like a dream in other parts of the world, is actually realistic here. Much of my work – whether in architecture, art or jewellery – evolves around the search for contemporary yet culturally-rooted design. For Al Nadi Tower in Abu Dhabi, for example, I used the traditional Islamic tiling principle and used a three-dimensional treatment to create a distinctive shape. I cherish art and there are lots of interesting galleries in Dubai clustered in Alserkal Avenue, Al Quoz and DIFC, but the venues a bit further away are just as interesting. TDIC (Tourism Development & Investment Company), for example, organises exquisite exhibitions at Manarat Al Saadiyat in Abu Dhabi, which should not be missed. For me, it is the diversity that makes the UAE an interesting place. If I had to choose
my favourite events on the social calendar, it would be the art festivals Abu Dhabi Art, Art Dubai and Sharjah Art Biennial. The first two are interesting because it showcases how the UAE has established itself as an international art platform, while the Sharjah Art Biennial boasts some exceptional and cultural statement pieces on display. To remind myself of home in Switzerland, I indulge in a cheese fondue at Vintage in Wafi or visit Sprüngli Boutique & Café at Village Mall in Jumeirah for some authentic premium Swiss chocolate. I also enjoy going to Panini at Grand Hyatt Dubai because they have a Swiss chef who serves traditional bread that we usually have on weekends which is known as zopf. When I have visitors, I take them on a stroll through the Al Fahidi Historic Neighbourhood to visit Dubai Museum, before continuing on to the souks nearby. We then cross Dubai Creek on a traditional boat known as an abra. Elsewhere in the city, there is a host of interesting places where old meets new such as Souk Madinat Jumeirah which is a lively modern bazaar.
I cherish art and there are lots of interesting galleries in Dubai clustered in Alserkal Avenue, Al Quoz and DIFC
