LEADING THE WAY ——— Concierge talks history and heritage with Longines’ president Walter von Känel

In January Longines launched the official countdown to the Dubai World Cup by timing the opening night of Dubai World Cup Carnival, which includes 10 exciting race meetings before the event’s main day on March 25. As the official timekeeper, official watch and official partner of Meydan Racecourse, Longines long association with the prestigious event is one that taps into the maison’s enduring passion for equestrian sports. “Longines has been committed to equestrian sports since 1878. It is thus natural that the brand decided to launch a collection dedicated to this long-lasting passion: The Longines Equestrian Collection. The Longines Equestrian Pocket Watch Jockey 1878 is also part of this collection and perfectly illustrates the brand’s strong devotion to tradition,” says Walter von Känel, president of Longines. This connection to the world of equestrian sports has also helped endear the watchmaker to the United Arab Emirates, a nation that shares a similar passion. Walter von Känel reveals that he is proud the brand is “growing substantially” in this part of the world. With a heritage that dates back to 1832, Longines is no ordinary brand. The Swiss watchmaker has the honour of having the oldest brand name in use and it’s one that tells the story of its illustrious origins. In 1832, Auguste Agassiz joined a trading office established in Saint-Imier

in Switzerland, which remains the base of Longines even today. He rose up the ranks and the company was renamed Agassiz & Co., producing timepieces under the établissage system that saw watchmakers work at home and supply their creations to trading offices. Over time his nephew, Ernest Francillon, took over operations, and came up with the idea of bringing all the stages involved with watchmaking under one roof. Francillon bought two adjoining pieces of land in 1866 on the right bank of the River Suze, which was known locally as Les Longines. This name was then adopted by the factory built there in 1867. Decades of innovations, expansion and world acclaim followed. Today, as part of Swatch Group, Longines’ visionary approach continues to shine through as Walter von Känel explains: “Our brand has respected three values in its history: elegance, tradition and performance. Since the beginning, those elements are mirrored in our collections and present in all our activities; they are part of Longines’ DNA. “I like to describe watches as emotional branded consumer goods and Longines has always respected its DNA in the aesthetics and philosophy of its products. Longines’ signature consists of a truly timeless elegance based on a rich heritage that keeps up-to-date with a blend of refinement and classicism,” explains von Känel who has been at the helm of Longines since 1988.

“My role consists of waking up very early to be able to take care of the paperwork and be available for my teams. I go in the field and travel very often, talking to the local people. I do not stay behind a computer writing never-ending e-mails. Actually, I do not use a computer at all,” says von Känel. “At the beginning of my career, the manufacturing managers were dictating the offer of watches. Nowadays the consumers’ desires are translated into the collections a brand presents. “There have been a lot of changes in the whole watchmaking industry, in particular with the creation of the Swatch Group that transformed the watchmaking industry deeply. Before this, the technical developments used to command the markets, and afterwards, technical development had to adapt itself to market needs. Longines is proud to be an important member of the Swatch Group.” Famous personalities that span the worlds of sports, arts and entertainment, including Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and Kate Winslet, are honoured as Ambassadors of Excellence for Longines. They are each carefully chosen to reflect the inherent values of the brand. “Kate Winslet joined the Longines family in 2010. Like all our Ambassadors of Elegance, she embodies our identity and our image around the world. Over the last six years, Kate has personified the Longines motto ‘Elegance is an attitude’. Kate has also demonstrated an elegance of the heart through her work with the Golden Hat Foundation, a non-profit organisation that she co-founded in 2010 which is dedicated to changing public perceptions of people with autism,” explains von Känel.

A pioneering collection that blends past and present, Longines’ Heritage collection – which saw the addition of standouts such as Heritage 1969, Railroad and Heritage 1918 this year – remains one of the watchmaker’s key pillars, as von Känel explains. “We started our Heritage collection in 1987 almost 30 years ago. At the time, we were among the first watch brands to go with this trend. Today, the Heritage segment is one of the five pillars of our collection, the others being Elegance, Watchmaking Tradition, Sport and Equestrian. These five pillars reflect our values and we are lucky to have such a long history of watchmaking to rely on. For the Heritage models, we draw our inspiration from historical pieces to reissue models using modern technologies. With its unwavering commitment to excellence, centuries of tradition and exceptionally crafted timepieces, Longines has a bright future ahead, which the company continues to steer towards. “For me, there are three keywords: continuity, consistency and focus. Longines is the leader in its price segment – 1,000 to 3,000 Swiss Francs – and maintaining this position is our main objective.” ——Discover the latest Longines timepiece collections at the Rivoli boutique in Mall of the Emirates. SET SAIL ——— Azimut Yachts prepares for the Dubai International Boat Show

Azimut Yachts, part of the Azimut|Benetti Group, is renowned for its luxurious range of 34 -120 feet yachts that reflect the finest in contemporary design and functionality. The company will take part in this year’s edition of the Dubai International Boat Show, which takes place from February 28 to March 4, where it will host the world premiere of the new Azimut Grande 35 Metri and showcase a wide range of models through their official distributor for the United Arab Emirates, Seas & Deserts Group. BEST IN CL ASS

—— The Azimut 77S, the Azimut 80 Fly and Azimut Grande 95RPH are just a few of the standout models from the company’s portfolio. The latter is a definite highlight as the high-end Azimut Grande 95 RPH boasts a raised pilothouse, providing more space for the main deck interiors – both in the generouslysized saloon and in the owner’s cabin, which is located on the bow, granting panoramic views with full-height windows along the sides. The elegant interiors of the 28-metre Grande 95RPH are custom designed by Studio Salvagni Architetti and can comfortably seat 10 people. Guests can also unwind in one of four VIP cabins with private baths or make the most of the 65square metre flybridge, which can be reached by two stairways. The boat has a spacious exterior dinette designed to encourage socialising, as well as a corner bar, Jacuzzi and a comfortable sun pad complete with modular seating for multiple configurations. Meanwhile, to the stern there is a garage with a pivoting platform and davit for a Willliams Dieseljet 445 with automatic inflation system to house a four-metre tender or Jet Ski.

GOOD SPORT

—— The Azimut Atlantis collection of sport cruisers is also extremely desirable, reflecting the perfect combination of sporting spirit and Italian creativity. Ranging from 34 to 58 feet, these models represent the best choice for those in search of high-quality performance and sleek aesthetics.

The boat has a spacious exterior dinette designed to encour age socialising, as well as a corner bar, Jacuzzi and a comfortable sun pad complete with modul ar seating For more sporting options, the Azimut S collection won’t disappoint. These elegant and super fast yachts, which come in varied sizes of up to 77 feet, combine comfort with innovation. The exteriors boast the use of carbon fibre and opening hard tops. One of the collection’s highlights is the Azimut 77S, which is designed like the rest of the S Collection by Stefano Righini – with Carlo Galeazzi responsible for the interiors – but also features many distinctive features from the Azimut sport yacht range. What sets the Azimut 77S apart from other models are two exclusive features: its pivoting stern platform and the double open air areas, one fore and one aft. There are also two very spacious open air living areas on board the Azimut 77S. The traditional aft cockpit with a sunbathing area of eight square metres, a dining table for as many as eight and a kitchen-bar area with a barbecue, fridge and ice-maker. Meanwhile, the fore cockpit remains secluded, even when docked, and features a large sofa, coffee table and all the space needed to relax. The efficiency of the new high performance hull combined with the three Volvo Penta IPS 1200 engines (900 HP each) guarantees top performance matched with excellent fuel consumption ratings.

WORLD OF CHOICE

—— When it comes to flybridges, Azimut stands out from the crowd courtesy of its powerful hulls, big windows with distinctive contours and innovative living solutions. The Azimut Flybridge Collection, featuring 13 flybridge motor yachts from 42 to 100 feet, presents exceptional attention to detail. The Azimut Magellano collection is also note worthy. These fast semi-displacement yachts, from 43 to 76 feet, are ideal for long cruises. Unique in the yachting world, models from the collection can act as either displacement or planing hulls. The new Azimut 80 is an exclusive on-thewater spa. It offers exceptional comfort: four cabins, five bathrooms and a 42-square-metre flybridge. With the honour of being the first yacht over 72 feet designed entirely at Azimut’s headquarters in Avigliana, Italy, the Azimut 80 has been crafted with luxury lifestyle in mind. Discover all this and so much more at the Dubai International Boat show.

JOURNEY TO ARABIA ——— The Emirates Airline Festival of Literature presents an inspiring programme based around memorable travels and experiences

From the rich tradition of Bedouin poetry that extolled the allure of a simple desert life to the stories of bravery passed down through generations of sea-faring families, the Middle East has always had an affinity for literature. This legacy is celebrated at The Emirates Airline Festival of Literature (EAFOL). Taking place from March 3 to 11 this year, the region’s largest celebration of the written and spoken word brings together thousands of people and authors from across the world to promote dialogue, debate and a passion for reading and writing. Spanning nine days and held under the theme Journeys, visitors can look forward to an unforgettable literary experience. More than 160 authors are participating in this year’s edition of EAFOL, a third of which hail from the UAE and Arab world. The line-up includes Jeffrey Archer, Dr Monther Al Kabbani and Emirati writer Abdulaziz AlMusallam among many others. “Part of the success of the Festival is the efforts we make to be as inclusive as possible, bringing a range of personalities and topics that can be enjoyed and appreciated by all, whether they are readers or not,” says Isobel Abulhoul, director of the Emirates Airline Festival of Literature. “With this year’s fascinating array of writers, thinkers, and commentators, as well as topics that are entertaining, inspiring and thought provoking, the 2017 programme most definitely will have something for everyone.” One of this year’s highlights is the return of Desert Stanzas, which celebrates the emirate’s traditional literary roots as poets from all over the world

gather together for a night of words and rhythm under the stars. New for 2017 is the Emirates Literature Foundation Dubai International Publishing Conference, held in association with The Executive Council, and the introduction of three-day creative writing courses. There are a number of inspiring stories in the spotlight this year, including the one told by celebrated musician Paul MacAlindin who was the musical director of the National Youth Orchestra of Iraq from 2009 to 2014. The orchestra became a beacon of hope in tumultuous times as revealed in MacAlindin’s new book UPBEAT: The Story of the National Youth Orchestra of Iraq. I N T E RV I E W: Pau l M ac A l in d in

“UPBEAT: The story of the National Youth Orchestra of Iraq was essential for me to write. As the only person who knew the whole story, I understood that these amazingly talented young musicians were an often an ignored part of Iraqi history. This is their story as much as mine. I found writing the book easy on one hand, as I’d lived the story as conductor so viscerally, and also tough as there was so much detail and darkness I had to leave out so the reader could enjoy a clear, gripping book from beginning to end. I will always remember our first concert in the Palace of Arts in Suleymaniyah, 2009. We performed Haydn’s Symphony 99. This composer writes in so many daft pauses and false endings as musical jokes. The audience of about 750 locals burst out in applause after every single one. Western

audiences are no longer fresh to these wonderful trick moments, and I imagined this is how Haydn’s audience would have also reacted. I was honoured indeed that my publisher, Sandstone Press, took an interest in the manuscript, and didn’t think any more of it at the time. But when the international media storm hit at the book’s launch last August, I was overwhelmed by people’s generous interest in the story. The overall message answers the question I asked at the start – who are the Iraqis? The war had made Iraq the most overreported country in the world, and yet its victims, the people, were ignored. Surely they must have music, culture and stories to tell? So the book sets out to tell the truth. Despite the recent history of war, these wonderful people are full of astonishing resilience. If Iraq is ever allowed to be in peace, we’ll see a country full of young people like them rebuilding their futures. This will be my first visit to Dubai. I knew Emirates Airline Festival of Literature was right for the story and I’m delighted to be part of it. In my opinion, the city could become a powerful creative force globally. There are more books in the works and I’ll be staying with my love, classical music, but it’s time for me to move on from Iraq. I’ve done all that I can. UPBEAT literally closes that chapter of my life.”

—— “I was very humbled to be named fair director in April last year and am proud to join what I’ve always considered to be a global cultural powerhouse. Having lived in the UAE for so long, covering the fair since its inception when it started as a commercial platform and then grew into its role of a central cultural institution over the last decade, I was and still am very excited to be part of this nucleus of the art world. My aim is to support and strengthen the fair’s positioning as a leading cultural body through the many avenues that we operate in. The planning and work behind each edition of Art Dubai begins the minute the last fair closes, so essentially we work all year round. Art Dubai is not just a fair that happens over a week in March but 4

“Art Dubai is not just a fair that happens over a week in M arch but is very much a year-long event that pulsates with activities and pl anning over the other 11 months of the year”

Art Dubai’s first incarnation was the DIFC Gulf Art Fair before being rebranded the following year to take on the now renowned title. From the offset, the fair was held under the patronage of HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of UAE and Ruler of Dubai who, even decades ago, was keen to promote arts and culture in the city.

is very much a year-long event that pulsates with activities and planning over the other 11 months of the year. The tempo then steps up in the months preceding the fair – it is akin to putting the pieces of a giant puzzle together to present a culturally stimulating experience over five days. There is so much to look forward to in our 2017 edition. We have over 90 galleries from 44 countries showcasing the works of modern and contemporary artists from all over the world. The critically acclaimed Global Art Forum presents Trading Places focused on the theme of trade, while Abraaj Group Art Prize winner, Rana Begum, will unveil her winning work alongside those of the three shortlisted artists under the curatorship of Omar Berrada. Other highlights include The Room, our engaging, gastronomic, installation-based performative experience conceived by Atfal Ahdath. A wealth of knowledge will also be brought through the inaugural Modern Symposium focused on Art Dubai Modern. Don’t miss our first performance-only Commissions under the curatorship of Yasmina Reggad as well as the

commissions curated by Amanda Abi Khalil that will see public art dot the city. What continues to inspire me about art in general is the story behind it and how it relates to you as a viewer. I also find its ability to be historic, a form of documentation and the experiences within that contribute to its story fascinating. It never really belongs to one person. I’d like visitors to Art Dubai to feel like they have seen something for the first time and to have been moved by an artwork or conversation. I hope they learn something or are inspired and want to do more to support the art scene and come back next year for more incredible experiences.” I n t e rv i e w: R a n a B e g u m , Wi n n e r o f t h e Ab r a a j G ro u p A r t P r i z e 2 017 a n d r e p r e s e n t e d by T h e T h i r d L i n e i n D u b a i

—— “It’s such an honour and a privilege to be the winner of the Abraaj Group Art Prize this year. I hope that the finished work lives up to the amazing opportunity that the committee has afforded me. The Art Dubai fair and Abraaj Group provide widespread international exposure for artists. This is vital for the art scene in the Middle East as it expands cultural horizons and ensures that there is a constant flow of fresh talent and new ideas. The work commissioned by the Abraaj Group Art Prize reiterates my interest in the interplay between light and colour. The commission stems from a series of studies on MDF (medium-density fibreboard) panels which focus on overlapping transparent coloured planes that create a third

layer of geometry and colour. This initial interaction was the starting point which led me to explore this concept further and make them more concrete through the use of glass. I am constantly inspired by what I see around me in everyday life as I walk around London. It’s always fantastic to visit other places too – it’s impossible not to draw inspiration from things that are fresh and new. I assisted the talented Tess Jaray for about five years and not only was she an amazing artist, but I also look up to her as an individual. At the moment, I’m working towards a solo show at Sainsbury Visual Arts Centre and curating a group show with young artists connected to the Arts Council Collection at the Yorkshire Sculpture Park. I’m also really excited about a collaborative project with electronic musician Hyetal. By working with music, I am seeing my work from an entirely new perspective.”

2/21/17 4:00 PM

From seasoned race-goers to equestrian enthusiasts and trackside stylistas, Dubai World Cup brings together a melting pot of fans eager to revel in the electrifying atmosphere of the world’s richest day in thoroughbred racing. Now in its 22nd year, the event is a firm fixture not only on the city’s sporting calendar, but also on the global stage. While Dubai World Cup Carnival’s 10-week race schedule officially began in January, anticipation has been steadily gaining momentum for months as the hard work and dedication from all those participating culminates in the run up to the big day on Saturday March 25, by which point the excitement will no doubt be palpable. Held at the prestigious Meydan Racecourse, Dubai World Cup day features nine group races worth US$30 million in prize money, with the final race on the card – the Group 1 Dubai World Cup – carrying a prize purse of US$10 million. Dubai Kahayla Classic kicks off the event’s exciting schedule, along with other significant races including the Dubai Gold Cup, Dubai Golden Shaheen and the Longines Dubai Sheema Classic with a sizeable prize fund of US$6 million up for grabs. With the world’s leading owners, trainers and jockeys all vying to be part of the action, the line up this edition brings together the best of the best from across the globe, including participants from Godolphin stables founded by HH Sheikh Mohammed bin

Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the United Arab Emirates and Ruler of Dubai. Since the competition’s return to a dirt track in 2015, rather than the all-weather synthetic Tapeta surface that had previously been favoured at Meydan Racecourse, there has been a resurgence in American racers. HH Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum’s Prince Bishop from Godolphin Stables stormed to an unexpected victory the same year, while American thoroughbred California Chrome, trained by the father and son team of Art and Alan Sherman, won the title in spectacular style in 2016. Regarded as the highest-earning American thoroughbred of all time, California Chrome is nearing retirement so anticipation is already reaching fever pitch among fans eager to see what’s in store for this year’s edition. “The Dubai World Cup Carnival continues to attract some of the most exciting horses in global racing,” says Malih Lahej Al Basti, Meydan Group vice chairman and chairman of the Meydan Racing Committee. “This season we made some changes to the Dubai World Cup Carnival programme and we are pleased with the response from the racing community. Meydan represents the world stage of horse racing and we are delighted to welcome back many returning horses and connections as well as fresh challengers for the new season.”

Horses have excellent 360-degree vision and can reach speeds of up to 60 kilometres per hour. With typical thoroughbreds weighing in around 1,200 pounds (544 kilogrammes), a jockey’s skill lies in handling the powerful animal masterfully right from the start through to the finish line.

The historic Swiss manufacturer Longines is also the official timekeeper, official watch and official partner of Meydan Racecourse, which means that all nine races during the Dubai World Cup are timed by the brand. Winners of key races are also gifted iconic Longines timepieces. The storied maison’s passion for equestrian sports dates back to 1878 when Longines created a chronograph engraved with a jockey and his mount.

while all eyes rem ain fixed on the horses throughout each r ace, there’s plent y on offer to entertain as r ace-goers wait for the next heat Among the changes include the minimum purse for a Dubai World Cup Carnival Handicap now standing at US$100,000 while the Dubai World Cup day Al Quoz Sprint has been increased in distance from 1,000-metres to 1,200-metres and replaces the Dubai Golden Shaheen as the UAE leg of the Global Sprint Challenge. Other changes include the increase of prize money across the Dubai World Cup Carnival by US$467,500 over the 10 meetings, including Super Saturday. Aside from all the action on the track, there is also an incredible hospitality offering and while all eyes remain fixed on the horses throughout each race, there’s plenty on offer to entertain as race-goers wait for the next heat. From private terraces with unbeatable views of the track to premium lounges where guests can enjoy meals and beverages, there is ample opportunity for those looking to enjoy the event in five-star luxury. Popular with corporate guests and networking parties, the Turf Suite on Level 4 of the Meydan Grandstand presents a lavish private dining area with outstanding views of the finish line for 300 to 500 people. The First Class Lounge and Falcon Suite are also exclusive venues that offer fabulous vistas of the track from the terrace and balcony.

If you’re after a grandstand view, head to The Premium area. Perfectly positioned opposite the finish line, it boasts a variety of food and beverage kiosks. Ahead of race day, those with a passion for all things equestrian should try the Breakfast with the Stars package. Taking place at Meydan Grandstand Apron Views, get an inside look at some of the Dubai World Cup contenders as they prepare for the event with morning track work, as you tuck into a sumptuous al fresco buffet breakfast. The Apron Views is another spot where guests can catch all the post-race entertainment and the fireworks display on the big day itself. With previous headliners including Kylie Minogue, Jennifer Lopez and Janet Jackson, the concerts are always guaranteed to be a big draw. It’s not just the horses that go head to head on race day, when it comes to off-track fashion the competition has been known to be just as fierce. From the ladies donning extraordinary hats and fabulous frocks, to dapper gents turned out in their best suits, each year the city’s style set comes together to battle it out for the crown of best dressed at the Jaguar Style Stakes. With equestrian history once again set to be made at Dubai World Cup, Meydan Racecourse is the place to be and be seen.

HERITAGE HEARTLAND ——— The worlds of history and art come together at Sharjah Biennial 13

The cobbled pathways of Sharjah Art Area wind their way through a fascinating part of the city. Here, among the traditional buildings and historic treasures, is a cluster of cultural communities and venues that are fast making their mark on the region’s art scene. The Sharjah Art Area is revered as one of the country’s oldest residential neighbourhoods. Its 18th century buildings were once home to wealthy pearl traders who exported the natural gems from Sharjah’s Mina Khalid Port, once the main port on the southern Arabian Gulf. As the discovery of oil further secured the emirate’s prosperity in the 1970s, HH Sheikh Sultan bin Mohammad Al Qasimi, Ruler of Sharjah, remained committed to preserving the traditional architecture of the Al Shuwaiheen area. As a result, a large-scale renovation of the 12,000 square metre neighbourhood was undertaken between 1993 and 1997. Today, people visit the area for the unique charm that lies in its connection to old Sharjah, as well as its rich cultural collateral. A vibrant scene has quickly developed, and at its heart is Sharjah Art Museum. Inaugurated in 1997, it is now a centre for exhibitions, seminars, workshops and lectures. Set up in 1997 by the Ruler of Sharjah, Sharjah Art Museum is one of the city’s main landmarks and a pioneering venue on the local art scene, run by Sharjah Museums Department. The museum’s

traditional architecture offers an interesting contrast with its newly hosted permanent exhibition on contemporary Arab art. Along an arched hallway, over 100 cutting-edge works displayed in 32 galleries offer a glimpse at the rich art scene that has developed in this part of Sharjah over the past three decades. Bright watercolours, pastels, acrylics and etchings depict daily scenes inspired by the region’s culture and way of life. Visitors can walk through the museum and have a tour of world class exhibitions, participate in any of the workshops offered, or walk across the street to visit the studios at Bait Al-Shamsi where you can meet with artists and watch them work. Elsewhere in the district, there’s a beautiful 18th century mosque and atmospheric souk, as well as stunning examples of traditional architecture. Every two years Sharjah Biennial brings together celebrated artists from around the world for the UAE’s longest running contemporary art event. The 13th edition (SB13) is now underway at the Sharjah Art Area with the theme Tamawuj, an Arabic word for ebb and flow. Curated by Beirutbased Christine Tohme, it features over fifty international artists, a series of exhibitions and a public programme staged in two ‘acts’ both in Sharjah and Beirut; a year-long education programme in Sharjah; an online publishing platform as well as projects in Dakar, Ramallah, Istanbul and Beirut.

The official Opening Week Programme will take place from March 10 to 14, which will feature the highly-anticipated official SB13 exhibition as well as a full line-up of performances, films and lectures. Just a few of the celebrated creatives taking part include Japanese painter and film artist Takashi Ishida; Indian graphic novelist, artist and filmmaker Sarnath Banerjee; Mexican conceptual artist Mario García Torres alongside Dubai-based artists such as Vikram Divecha. While Act I takes place in Sharjah from March 10 to June 12, Tohme is also drawing on the emirate’s unique positioning to expand the biennial through various nodes, inviting four ‘interlocutors’ to present artistic variations across four other sites: Dakar in Senegal, Ramallah in Palestine, Istanbul in Turkey and Beirut in Lebanon. The thematic focus of SB13 is grounded in the four keywords – water, crops, earth and culinary – which form the foundations of social interaction and exchange. Upcoming highlights include curator Zeynep Oz leading the Istanbul programme related to crops on May 13 and curator Lara Khalidi addressing the subject of earth in Ramallah on August 10. Meanwhile, Ashkal Alwan will organise the closing Act II of the biennial alongside a project based on the culinary concept, both in Beirut, on October 15. —— For more information on the Sharjah Biennial 13 and Sharjah Art Foundation, visit: sharjahart.org

PARK LIFE ——— Experience daredevil adventures, dine along the riverside and watch a Broadwaystyle musical – all in a day in Dubai

D U B A I PA R KS A N D R E S O R T S

—— No visit to the city would be complete without exploring Dubai Parks and Resorts. The supersized venue houses no less than three theme parks and a water park – Bollywood Parks, the first ever Bollywood inspired venue of its kind, MOTIONGATE Dubai, which takes its inspiration from popular Hollywood films, as well as LEGOLAND Dubai and LEGOLAND Water Park. Overall, the 30.6 million square foot venue, located on Sheikh Zayed Road opposite Palm Jebel Ali, offers almost 100 truly enticing rides and attractions At MOTIONGATE Dubai theme park visitors can experience the magic of three of the most successful motion picture studios in Hollywood – DreamWorks Animation, Columbia Pictures and Lionsgate – with interactive play zones, themed rides and theatrical shows. Hours of fun await as you emulate the Green Hornet and embark on a high-speed chase or join the Ghostbusters in a paranormal battle to save New York City. The Rajmahal Theatre at Bollywood Parks Dubai is another signature highlight at Dubai Parks and Resorts. The 850-seat theatre is famed for hosting the region’s first Broadway-style Bollywoodthemed musical Jaan-e-Jigar. This 120-minute extravaganza celebrates a fantasy tale of two brothers named Jaan and Jigar, in a classic story of good versus evil. Visitors can also reminisce about strolling the streets of India at Mumbai Chowk with its famed food and shopping attractions. Meanwhile LEGOLAND Water Park, aimed at families with children aged two to 12, is a sprawling venue that features 20 water slides and attractions including the popular Build-A-Raft River where families customise their own raft using LEGO soft bricks before floating down a lazy river. Families will also enjoy the Red Rush where they can ride together in a family-sized raft down a 312-foot-long

THE NIKKI EFFECT ——— Chef Brendan McGowan leads the culinary charge at one of Dubai’s most exciting beach resorts

When Nikki Beach Resort & Spa Dubai opened its doors in December, the city was introduced to a unique taste of luxury at Pearl Jumeira. With panoramic views of the Arabian Gulf, elegant décor and an unmistakable sense of chic, there’s a lot that impresses, including gourmet dining experiences. From the globally-inspired cuisine of Nikki Beach Dubai and all-day urban bistro Café Nikki to the exclusive fare at the Nikki Privé lounge, refreshing cocktails at Soul Lounge and fantastic St. Tropez-themed Friday brunch, there are culinary attractions at every corner. The five-star resort is also set to open the highly-anticipated Key West restaurant in spring, which will offer a delectable blend of Floridian and Caribbean cuisines with Latin influences. It’s testament to the creativity and hard work of chef Brendan McGowan, director of culinary creations, and the entire team at Nikki Beach Resort & Spa Dubai. McGowan reveals that he was inspired to start cooking because of his grandmother: “I know it sounds like a cliché but she always had a slowly simmering stock on the back burner due to the multitude of potential lunch guests that could arrive unannounced to her house – it was the family house for our parents, uncles, aunts, children and grandchildren – and this was before everyone had a mobile phone. She would consistently provide good wholesome meals on the table and always had a few sweets in her apron pockets. Watching her as she shuffled around her kitchen, stirring and tasting, with a glint in her blue eyes that showed everything was under control despite the mayhem around her is a fond memory. “Additionally, stumbling across a poem from one of the many books in my grandmother’s living room, titled The Dinner Hour, highlighted the importance of the culinary craft to me.” Following stints in many other countries, including San Francisco, Turkey, Saudi Arabia, McGowan today spends challenging, yet wholly rewarding days at Nikki Beach Resort & Spa Dubai.

“Each day offers a wide variety of unique opportunities to showcase the talents of our team. I arrive early to attend the morning line-up to explain breakfast culinary creations and review inhouse guest comments. I then support the team during the breakfast service, receive produce for the day and conduct quality inspections. Being with the team creates a bond and enhances handson development of both people and products. Guest interaction is also a great pulse check of the team’s performance and always a highlight.” Every dish at the resort is a signature in its own right, with careful attention given to sourcing ingredients locally. “We all need to promote UAE produce. We have the support of the local organic farm Greenheart UAE and we collaborate closely with them. We also have a local cheese producer and choose fish from the Choose Wisely sustainability program to support and create awareness of the dangers of overfishing certain species. For certain ingredients, we have to source them from as far afield as Saint Lucia, for example. I’ll also be presenting a signature chocolate tasting experience for our Key West guests that is based on a chocolate that I collaborated especially with a cocoa plantation owner for,” adds McGowan. He also believes that while the rise of fusion fare has armed chefs with a vast collection of ingredients to craft exciting creations, authenticity remains key. “An understanding and respect for authentic dishes prior to fusing is very important. Similar to learning music, there must be a discipline for the classics and then creativity will flow. To me, food is life, love and happiness,” says McGowan. “The city has an incredible array of dining destinations whether it’s an old established curry house in Satwa, five-star Michelin-starred restaurants at luxury hotels or a hole in the wall on Jumeirah road that prepares thin flat bread with eggs; we have it all in Dubai.” —— For more information and to book a table at any of the restaurants at Nikki Beach Resort & Spa Dubai, contact: 04 3766000

—— Aseelah

Traditional Emirati recipes and seasonal local ingredients are celebrated at Aseelah in Radisson Blu Hotel, Dubai Deira Creek where the décor reflects a wonderful sense of place. Colourful lanterns and camel figurines are dotted across the tables while intricate lights decorated in Arabesque patterns hang from the ceiling. Here Emirati rice dishes are cooked with a variety of meats and chef Uwe Micheel elevates the flavour of locally-sourced, sustainable fish by using his own homemade spice combinations and tangy, flavourful chutneys. For a true taste of the emirate, try the maleh salad of preserved fish on a bed of lettuce and grilled Gulf prawns that are flavoured with turmeric and lemon. Contact: 04 2057033

This chic Asian restaurant and bar at Sheraton Grand Hotel, Dubai effortlessly sets the scene for a memorable dinner with ease. Here the contemporary décor, complete with dark woods and statement lighting fixtures, matches the sleek service so don’t hesitate to ask the expert staff for recommendations. The restaurant’s Chinese and pan-Asian inspired menu lives up to high expectations but make sure to also check out the selection of seafood displayed proudly at the restaurant’s own ‘fresh market’. There’s a lot to choose from and on our last visit we enjoyed Novikov’s signature sashimi creations that included hamachi carpaccio and scallops with black truffle. Everything here is prepared fresh and presented with flourish. Contact: 04 3888744

One of the signature restaurants at Fairmont The Palm, Seagrill on 25° Restaurant & Lounge features a menu that’s primarily focused on ‘fruits de la mer’ with a Mediterranean touch. To start, we’d recommend ordering the delicious seafood linguini packed with mussels, shrimp, clams and squid that is marinated in a flavourful yet delicate tomato sauce. The menu’s Fish Market section lists the restaurant’s signature seafood selection, which includes seabass from Greece, octopus from Tunisia and black seabream from Turkey as its Mediterranean highlights. Contact: 04 4573457 Tresind

Fans of Indian cuisine are in for a treat at Tresind. Located at Nassima Royal Hotel, the fine dining restaurant introduces your palate to a whole host of possibilities thanks to chef Himanshu Saini’s expertise in molecular gastronomy. Here the sciences of physics and chemistry transform tastes and textures of food in delightful ways. Seafood enthusiasts will no doubt enjoy the pan-seared scallops served with a rich peanut sauce, while the Achari monk fish that celebrates the tangy flavour of pickles and the delicious pepper prawns tossed with curry leaves is well recommended. ASK THE CONCIERGE

Royston Sixtus, assistant concierge manager at Burj Al Arab Jumeirah, shares top recommendations for new visitors

Dubai is the ultimate global destination for millions of visitors, for a million reasons. The emirate is the perfect choice for everyone from luxury aficionados through to thrill-seekers. The city is growing at breakneck speed but, at the same time, it is making extraordinary efforts to preserve its rich cultural heritage. Iconic landmarks such as Burj Khalifa and The Dubai Mall are truly unique to this desert oasis. The distinctive sail-shaped silhouette of Burj Al Arab Jumeirah is more than just an attractive design feature; it is a symbol of modern Dubai. For all the wonder this beautiful structure provides when you see it in person, it is the service within the five-star hotel that makes it extraordinary. My day at the hotel starts very early. I look after general itinerary requests and deal with guests who are departing and require taxis to meetings, or to the airports. One essential aspect of my role is to know what’s on, where’s good to eat, and how people can get to where they need to go – not just in Dubai, but across the UAE. From the timeless tranquillity of the desert to the bustle of vibrant souks, Dubai boasts a mix of contemporary attractions and intriguing

historical sites. When in the city, plan a visit to the world’s tallest tower Burj Khalifa and The Dubai Fountain before taking a stroll through Al Fahidi Historical Neighbourhood in Bur Dubai that presents striking wind tower architecture and stunning gallery spaces. For visitors looking to shop, Mall of the Emirates and Madinat Jumeirah houses some of the finest brands, while some of the best places to find souvenirs are Antique Museum in Al Quoz, Gold Souk in Bur Dubai, Souk Al Bahar and the Fatima bint Mohamed bin Zayed Initiative on Jumeirah Beach Road, where proceeds from the sale of handicrafts go towards worthy charitable causes. A true shopper’s paradise, Dubai is also home to some of the world’s best-known designer and luxury brands and The Dubai Mall provides a complete shopping experience like no other. It houses prestigious labels such as Vertu, Louis Vuitton, Gucci, Kenzo, Tag Heuer, Bloomingdale’s, Cartier and Alexander McQueen to name a few. Elsewhere, Miracle Garden at Dubailand offers a serene setting to escape the bustle of the city for an afternoon. The region’s biggest flower garden is said to feature more than 45 million blooms. Alternatively, experience the magic of the Arabian desert and its rolling sand dunes with an unforgettable desert safari. After a long day of exploring, unwind at Burj Al Arab Jumeirah. The hotel has nine exceptional restaurants and bars that each ensure an exceptional experience. While each restaurant is unique, I would highly recommend dining at Nathan Outlaw at Al Mahara for Dubai’s freshest seafood catch. Experience the two-star Michelin chef’s unique culinary style and signature dishes at the restaurant.
