Tap into the history of the UAE by booking a place on the jalboot – a local pearling boat – and join a guided tour that focuses on the country’s pearling heritage. Once the lifeblood of the local community, local men would spend up to four months at sea, diving to great depths with rudimentary equipment to forage on the ocean floor. Demonstrations on board the jalboot show how divers managed this feat and offer visitors the opportunity to try their hand at opening oysters. Visit: adpearljourney.ae

—— Renowned for being one of the oldest and most prestigious perfume houses in the UAE, Ajmal Perfumes’ legacy spans more than five decades. Famed for its exquisite oudh-based fragrances, the house also lets visitors craft their own signature scent through the My Inspiration concept. Available at Ajmal’s Ras Al Khaimah boutique, My Inspiration sees visitors choose from an array of ingredients that lend different scents – whether floral, fruity, woody, musky or citrus – for a bespoke creation with guidance from experts. “At My Inspiration, people can smell different ingredients to decide what they like, which can then be used to create a personalised fragrance. We also have pre-mixed oils at the store that can be transformed into perfumes. If a customer chooses to create a bespoke scent, their formula will be written down and when they want another bottle, all
they have to do is call the store,” explains Abdulla Ajmal, general manager of Ajmal Perfumes. Several members of royalty and celebrities from the region have already crafted their own signature scent through Ajmal Perfumes, with demand growing as discerning clientele look for more unique and personalised fragrances. “One of the most expensive creations from Ajmal Perfumes is the limited edition collection of 20 year old Indian Dahn al Oudh perfume called Dahn Oudh Al Ittihad. This perfume is housed in a bottle that is beautifully handcrafted and shaped to resemble a falcon and decorated with the UAE’s flag colours. With 10 limited-edition masterpieces created, each of these rare Dahn Al Oudh perfume bottles feature a bejewelled ‘hood’ with 73 carats of real gemstones including diamonds, rubies and emeralds.
In addition, every bottle in the collection is accompanied with a 24 carat gold-plated guarantee scroll and descriptor, making it a real collector’s edition,” says Abdulla Ajmal. Some of the most popular ingredients chosen in My Inspiration are regional favourites such as traditional oudh, amber, frankincense, sandalwood and rose, while jasmine, mandarin and other citrus fruits, white lilies, tuberose and gardenia are also popular choices. Customers can also opt to have their bespoke fragrance stored in a unique crystal bottle that can be personalised. “We study our client’s personality and lifestyle and also involve them in each step of the My Inspiration process and creation of the perfume. It then becomes an expression of their identity,” explains Abdulla Ajmal. Visit: ajmalperfume.com

TALKING ART ——— Cartier’s high jewellery collections reflect the maison’s rich heritage and innovative vision
There’s something exquisitely enchanting about Maison Cartier. With a legendary history built on crafting exceptional jewellery, it’s little wonder that Cartier is renowned for being the ‘jeweller to kings’. Despite being founded in 1847, well over a century ago, its name is still revered far and wide today. From sparkling classical designs to iconic creations from the modern era, Cartier has played a pivotal role in the evolution of decorative arts. It’s a fact that not many people in the world are aware of, which is why Pierre Rainero’s role is all the more important. As the image, style and heritage director at Cartier, Rainero is tasked with overseeing all contemporary designs from the maison, as well as other communications and strategy-related issues. He is also in charge of the Heritage Department, supervising the famed Cartier Collection that consists of nearly 1,500 historical pieces that, collectively, tell the story of the maison in an inimitable fashion. The chapter on jewellery designer and style icon Jeanne Toussaint, Cartier’s creative director of jewellery from 1933 until 1970, remains one of the most interesting. She’s credited with influencing a whole new dictionary of style with the incorporation of bold colours, a playful mix of stones and a more whimsical approach to designs. “There are strong creations illustrating innovations in the world of jewellery such as the first use of platinum in the beginning of the 20th century, pre Art-Deco pieces that made Cartier a pioneer in terms of using steel and other pieces showing figurative work around animals, flowers and nature in general, which is very distinctive of Cartier.
“Many, many pieces are priceless not only because of their value on the art market but because of their significance in terms of the evolution of decorative arts,” explains Rainero. Cartier’s enigmatic panthère motif is an example of the house’s timeless allure, with the design taking pride of place across a dedicated collection of meticulously crafted rings, earrings, necklaces, brooches and bracelets. “As a pattern, the panthère was invented by Cartier in 1914 and, at the time, it was the idea to play with two colours – black and white – so onyx and diamonds on platinum as a motif. It was a sort of stylisation of the panther animal and its fur, and progressively, by the mid or late 1940s, it became more and more naturalistic and figurative. It was very successful because of the obvious symbolism that was behind it for women. The idea of a very elegant, independent and sometimes ferocious animal came at the right moment in history when women could express themselves in a way that was impossible before. The symbol of the panther is still strong today, because it’s related to that conquest of independence for women,” says Rainero. As the main contact for major international museums and cultural institutions as well as exhibitions dedicated to Cartier creations, Rainero’s job is far from easy but it’s an exciting endeavour. “My responsibilities are extremely diverse, whether it’s related to image and style purposes, or heritage responsibilities. However the most important aspect is the creations of today and tomorrow. The highlight of this part is the Friday morning meeting with the

“THE NEW ÉTOURDISSANT COLLECTION IS ABOUT EMOTION. IT REFLECTS THE DEEP MEANING OF JEWELLERY FOR MEN AND WOMEN AND HOW THERE IS A FASCINATION FOR STONES; HOW YOU CAN BE LOST IN ADMIRING STONES BECAUSE IT’S A MIR ACLE FROM NATURE”
committee where all the projects in terms of creations are presented and discussed,” he explains, adding that even designs for bespoke jewellery orders are considered very carefully and involve a wellthought out process. “Special orders have always been part of our activities. If you look at our archives, there were books for our own stock and books that were dedicated to special orders, and we still work in the same way. The process begins with a customer’s request to the sales staff at any of our boutiques around the world. All projects come to our studios in Paris and, for each client briefing, we would present three different possibilities that have all been approved internally before being presented.” Over the years, the maison’s drive and passion for innovation has only strengthened with modern-day icons such as the Love bracelet, Trinity ring and Halo tiara considered some of the most covetable today. Cartier’s recent Étourdissant high jewellery collection, inspired by the Riviera and its changing colour palettes, has elevated this tradition with a stunning set of beautiful one-of-a-kind pieces that are brought to life using colourful stones such as diamonds, sapphires, emeralds and rubies. “The new Étourdissant collection is about emotion. It reflects the deep meaning of jewellery for men and women and how there is a fascination for stones; how you can be lost in admiring stones because it’s a miracle from nature. Also Étourdissant is amazing because of the craftsmanship involved and how delicate it is. It’s a
mix between the unexpected and the illusion of movement that only very hard materials can provoke. “Everything that goes into the direction – more fluidity and more movement – is linked to pushing the boundaries of high jewellery craftsmanship. There are many pieces in this collection that are worthy of attention. For example the woven diamonds on the necklace is an example of innovation even if it’s linked to an Indian tradition. “One of the main points at Cartier is that we want to be distinct, to be recognised by a very strong and specific style. Within that frame, many influences are present in our creations, as well as inspirations from different cultures. That’s very Cartier, to be curious about cultures. In our style today, influences come from many different continents and periods from Islamic to Asian culture; Russia, ancient Egypt and even classical ancient Greece or the Roman Empire. All those influences are very strong in our style today.” Cartier has always been the embodiment of style and new wearable works of art continue to pay tribute to the house’s famed heritage, thanks in part to the creative efforts of its dedicated team of master craftsmen and artisans. Rainero adds: “Everything we do is totally fresh and demonstrates a new direction, but within the frame of a very strong Cartier style. That’s the challenge our designers have: to create a surprise and bring something new and, at the same time, create the comment, ‘oh this is very Cartier’. This is linked to the tradition that is deeply in our roots, to permanently innovate and create.”

The design takes pride of place within the yellow gold, diamond-set case. Another striking feature of the Ballon Bleu de Cartier timepiece is its crown, boasting a bold sapphire cabochon. —— The butterfly has long been a symbol of delicate beauty and quiet strength, charming characteristics that Harry Winston seeks to encapsulate in the stunning Premier Precious Butterfly Automatic collection. Using intricate feather art to create the dial façade, craftsmen then use a shimmering powder that’s found on the butterfly’s wing to lift its colours. The skill required to harvest the powder and then painstakingly place it onto the dial is one that the house has taken over three years to perfect. One of three variations, this model features a delicate 18-carat rose gold case dotted with 57 brilliant-cut diamonds and a stylish Champagne-toned satin strap.

ALTERNATIVE PERSPECTIVE ——— Abu Dhabi Festival showcases an impressive season of performing arts
Over the years, the capital has championed arts and culture by building worldclass museums, hosting iconic festivals and events that attract thousands of visitors, and by crafting key initiatives that aim to honour and celebrate the UAE’s heritage. While audiences keen on experiencing the emirate’s cultural side have been spoilt for choice recently, the best is perhaps yet to come with the Abu Dhabi Festival. Organised by the Abu Dhabi Music & Arts Foundation, the 13th edition of the popular festival boasts a comprehensive programme that features some of the brightest talents from the worlds of classical music, dance and performing arts. Hosted from April 3 to 30, this year’s festival theme, ‘A pledge for culture’, reflects its commitment to promote and nurture this burgeoning sector. As part of the festival, over 70 events will take place across multiple venues involving talent such as French soprano Natalie Dessay, Chinese pianist Lang Lang and Cuban ballet dancer Carlos Acosta among many other distinguished artists. In anticipation of another brilliant season, Concierge talks with the organisers and participating artists about the festival’s influence on the world stage.

—— Nasser Abdullah, Chair of the Emirates Fine Arts Society, stresses the importance of the new UAE Arts Archive – a comprehensive and historical resource for the country’s visual arts sector –launching at Abu Dhabi Festival.
“The f irst edition of Abu Dhabi Festival took place in 2004 under the patronage of HH Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan. It began as a very modest platform, building on the work that ADMAF had been doing since its inception in 1996. We simply decided that Abu Dhabi was ready for such a celebration and managed to organise it within a very short space of time. I remember it as if it was yesterday, and the thrill of presenting the festival has never left me. Abu Dhabi Festival celebrates culture and creativity. Our ultimate goal is to make a difference to society by promoting respect and tolerance. I firmly believe that the arts have an inherent value. It encourages us to dream, gives us the skills to excel, and promotes community ties. By creating a programme that brings together the best of all the arts within an atmosphere of enquiry and exchange, we hope to continue nurturing the development of local talent, ensuring that artistic expression and creativity of all forms are embedded as key components in our society. That is at the heart of our pledge, and we encourage all who believe in the power of culture as a form of education and enlightenment to participate and enjoy this year’s festival in all its varied forms. By bringing the world to Abu Dhabi and sharing our city with the world, we are contributing to the growth of a new capital of culture.”
“Growing up in a musical family was very inspirational for me – not just because of my father, but because my uncle Julian and both my paternal grandparents were also musicians and composers. When it comes to describing my job, not a lot of people realise that one of the most challenging aspects of being a composer is that you can have a lot of different and interesting ideas, but joining them up can sometimes be tricky. It does mean that many of our initial ideas can fall by the wayside – the blank page is a daunting prospect. Some of the best advice I’ve ever received over the course of my career is that the very best songs are often, in some way, similar to either a wellknown hymn or a nursery rhyme in terms of their ease and simplicity. Visitors to the Abu Dhabi Festival who are thinking about attending The Little Prince are in for a real treat. They can expect to experience, and hopefully enjoy, a broad spectrum of musical genres, in a heartfelt, moving and entertaining way. This will be our first real visit to the Middle East, and it is one that we are eagerly anticipating. Both me and James are really looking forward to immersing ourselves in all that the Abu Dhabi Festival, and the region as a whole, has to offer. We are proud, happy, thrilled and honoured to be invited to take part.”
“Ever since I was a child I really liked the sounds of the oud. The inherent nature of the instrument is something that attracts me. It’s like the sound of God, a nice sound, and I have always tried to do my best with it. My journey into the world of music started in 1986 when I began learning how to play the instrument on my own. I enjoy the compositions of Johann Sebastian Bach, Franz Schubert, Albeniz and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. There are many things I can learn from their compositions including the way they write music and ideas to create melodies. With my performance at the Abu Dhabi Festival, visitors can expect a collaboration of works between two cultures. It’s like a marriage, and we try to create a nice harmony between the heritage of Switzerland and the UAE. The composition also contains music from my own ideas, which has roots and elements from UAE music. This will be mixed with Western music, and it will be a very new and exciting piece that I hope visitors will appreciate. I believe organisations such as Abu Dhabi Music & Arts Foundation are very important in promoting and sharing art, in all its forms, both regionally and around the world. Music from this region has special beats. We have our own language and signature style, different to Kuwait and Saudi Arabia, which then affects the melodies and rhythms of our life.”
“The Emirates Fine Arts Society was established in 1980 with the aim of providing an umbrella body for art and artists within the UAE. Over the years, we have witnessed the country transform to become a hub for art and culture in region, which has led to the creation of a variety of work in different schools, thoughts and philosophies, harbouring a special environment for everyone interested in the field of arts. This year the society is collaborating with the Abu Dhabi Music & Arts Foundation to establish The UAE Arts Archive – a definitive and official historical resource for the country’s visual arts sector. Through this initiative, we aim to add a new source of education and help amplify the UAE’s deep art heritage. The first phase will be launched during Abu Dhabi Festival 2016 and we are creating an environment where the first generation of UAE artists can come together for different events and exhibitions, to make sure that their story is told and that new local artists will continue to be mentored and flourish into the future. My hope is that the Emirates Fine Arts Society will be able to expand to have more branches within the UAE in order to reach more artists and more audiences. To not only help build more understanding of our role but the role of culture and fine art in enhancing our society as a whole.”

Standing proud and majestic, the regal falcon is a beloved emblem of the United Arab Emirates. Over generations, its presence has been intricately woven into the fabric of the nation, transitioning from a much needed survival practice of the region’s desert dwellers into a symbol of national strength and a growing sporting scene. For visitors eager to get up close and personal with these incredible creatures, Royal Shaheen Events is a great place to start. We caught up with operations manager, Hendri Du Toit, to delve further into the fascinating art of falconry. Du Toit, a South African native, has been working with falcons in the region since 2010. The peregrine, saker and barbary falcons are among the most common species here in the UAE, although Du Toit and his team are well-versed in handling a variety of falcon, as well as eagles, owls and hawks. “We work with around 50 birds on a daily basis, and much like people, they all have different characteristics and behavioural traits. A typical day of a falconer starts at sunrise. It involves weighing the birds, preparing their food, checking to see if they are alright to fly and getting them ready for event demonstrations, which we do on a
daily basis,” he explains. “One of our most popular packages here at Royal Shaheen is the Interactive Falconry experience. We pick up a small group of guests and drive them out into the desert where they have the chance to interact with the birds. A lot of guests are nervous the first time they handle the falcons, as they can look a bit intimidating, so we always handle them first and show guests how we work with the birds, go through all the safety aspects and explain how to interact in a safe, comfortable way.” Du Toit reveals that a food-based relationship is the most common form of interaction between falcons and humans. “Falcons generally don’t recognise individuals. There are occasions when certain birds may interact better with certain trainers, but usually it’s down to the food being offered. That’s also how we work with the falcons during the display shows. We give the guest a special glove to wear and although the falcon has never seen the person before, it will fly to them as they know that there is food available.” Guests are often surprised to find out that a falcon’s diet is strictly carnivorous and doesn’t involve any plant material at all.
“A T YPICAL DAY OF A FALCONER STARTS AT SUNRISE. IT INVOLVES WEIGHING THE BIRDS, PREPARING THEIR FOOD, CHECKING TO SEE IF THEY ARE ALRIGHT TO FLY AND GET TING THEM READY FOR EVENT DEMONSTR ATIONS, WHICH WE DO ON A DAILY BASIS”

Modern day training techniques see falcons fly after food attached to a parachute, which is placed at the end of a long line and carried by a special drone. This extended lead also keeps the falcon safe from the drone’s rotating blades.

“WE ALSO HAVE BIRDS THAT ARE TR AINED TO WORK AROUND FIL M CREWS AND ON CA MER A. AS A WELL-RECOGNISED SYMBOL OF THIS PART OF THE WORLD, FALCONS ARE OFTEN USED FOR ADVERTISING, FIL M AND PHOTO SHOOTS”

Visitors taking part in the company’s tours and experiences will also have the opportunity to learn more about the history of these birds and ancient UAE tradition of falconry. One of the most surprising facts for many is that although the connection between falcons and local Bedouins dates back over 2,000 years, falcons aren’t actually indigenous to the region. “As you can imagine the nomadic life of the Bedouins was one of great difficulty, especially when it came to hunting. So to substitute their summer diet, which was pretty meagre, at the beginning of the winter season around October, the Bedouins would trap the falcons and train them for about three to four weeks to hunt. That’s how they would get the meat and protein to feed their families. In Europe, in the Middle Ages, falconry was the sport of kings and so only royalty were allowed to fly them. But for Bedu people, falcons were for everyone and an important way of putting food on the table. That’s why the birds are so special to local people.” Although instinctively falcons are migratory birds, thanks to modern day advancements like air-conditioning, these birds can now be kept and bred throughout the year. Technology has also helped further falcon training, something guests discover more about when out in the desert. “We use special drones and quadcopters for training, as well as navigation sensors that are attached to the bird. It’s a modern way to achieve a new level of fitness as the falcons have to fly higher and higher. This makes them exercise and train specific muscles, making them
stronger for racing and hunting. It’s become a very popular technique in the Middle East region,” says Du Toit. These exercises reinforce the falcon’s primal relationship with food – as Du Toit explains, it’s not the drone that the falcon hunts but rather the food. While it’s an all day job for the falconers, the birds manage to get a bit more of a break. “Once the morning falcons have been trained and fed, we can’t fly them again in the afternoon. So they return to our headquarters and we start with a new team in the afternoons as we do quite a few sunset falcon shows for different safari companies. We also have birds that are trained to work around film crews and on camera. As a well-recognised symbol of this part of the world, falcons are often used for advertising, film and photo shoots,” says Du Toit. In addition to new developments and the use of technology, many traditional elements are still involved in training and handling falcons. “Much of what is used today has been used for thousands of years. We still use a leather hood to cover the eyes of the falcon, once this happens the falcon is completely calm and relaxed. As the saying goes, out of sight out of mind, so this method helps reduce many stress factors associated with handling the birds. We also use leg tethers to secure the falcons and make sure they don’t attack each other when they are placed together.” Over the years the tradition of falconry has effortlessly evolved into a celebrated sport, encouraging people to discover more about these majestic birds and appreciate its status as a national symbol.

WORLD OF FLAVOUR ——— From fresh, seasonal ingredients to high-quality produce and artful presentation, executive chef Lev Muradov reveals his culinary essentials
With its close proximity to the capital’s Corniche promenade as well as landmarks such as the historic Qasr Al Hosn fort, Grand Millennium Al Wahda is perfectly placed to explore some of Abu Dhabi’s key sights. At the hotel itself, guests can enjoy a wealth of spa, leisure and gourmet experiences, the latter of which are helmed by Turkmenistan-born executive chef Lev Muradov. Recounting his lifelong love affair with food, Muradov reveals: “I became a chef because of my grandmother. It was true destiny. The passion I have for cooking is in my blood. Growing up, I remember spending every free minute in the kitchen, watching her prepare dishes with great love and passion using only the ingredients that were available at that time.” Having joined the hotel’s culinary team last year, Muradov’s experience in the UAE now spans 13 years and has influenced his appreciation for local cuisine. “I love Arabic food – at first because it was similar to food from my home, but now I’ve discovered that each Arab country has their own secret culinary tricks and ways of preparing recipes. This makes the cuisine very diverse and interesting. Now more than ever, chefs are inspired to create modern dishes based on traditional Middle Eastern cuisine,” explains Muradov. It is this approach of reinventing the traditional that has served as a catalyst and inspiration over the years. “I think the turning point for me was my culinary internship in 1996 in Bergamo, Italy. That was when I first saw some classic recipes turned into something that, these days, people call ‘modern’ Italian food. It was at that time I decided to travel and learn more.”
His love for grassroots cooking is something he also takes from his own country. “Back in the ‘90s, in the former Soviet Union, we used a lot of local ingredients based on seasonal cuisine and did a lot of slow cooking. Back then, we did not have the opportunity to get products that weren’t in season. That’s why all the chefs tried to create great dishes using ingredients that were readily available on the market; and it was awesome. Here at the hotel, we work with very well known food suppliers as well as with local farms and producers.” This carefully selected produce is used across all the hotel’s restaurants, where the cuisine ranges from fine Italian at Porto Bello, Asian fare at Toshi, British pub classics at Porters as well as an all-day dining and lobby lounge. “At Grand Millennium Al Wahda, I believe the secret to success is identifying with the restaurant’s clientele and finding the best ways to connect with them. Our staff work to create familiar dishes, made with quality ingredients that include signatures of both the hotel and the chef team. Of utmost importance to me, is that guests connect with a dish visually as soon as they sit down at our restaurants.” For this to happen, he explains: “Flavour needs to dictate the plating. If you think about how it looks before thinking of what the dishes taste like, it will never come out correctly.” From the soft shell crab lagoon and beef paradise at Toshi to the creative platters at Porters that make snacking a treat, the dishes from the hotel’s restaurants are a wonderful representation of clever plating and fusion of flavour. —— For more information and to reserve a table at Grand Millennium Al Wahda, contact: 02 4439999

BLUE BAR
—— Encased in a grand glass atrium, Blue Bar’s imposing floor to ceiling windows certainly deliver on the venue’s efforts to create a great first impression. It’s striking glass façade is created by the distinctive architectural curves of the Hilton Capital Grand Abu Dhabi. The sleek interiors add to the swanky after-dark feel, as dark wood floors, a lengthy, illuminated bar and plush furnishings in intense mauve hues all signal to guests that they are in for a sophisticated night out. Of course, as remarkable as the décor is, it’s the panoramic city views that remain Blue Bar’s standout feature. The extensive drinks menu is the perfect complement to the twilight views, with vintage Champagne, top shelf spirits and creative cocktails all proving particularly tempting.

Tucked away on the first f loor of Dalma Mall you’ll find Feathers Fashion, a high-end accessories boutique specialising in fine jewellery, wallets, pens and handbags. The brainchild of Emirati entrepreneur Khalid Basaeed, Feathers Fashion is the first ever homegrown luxury goods brand and it has taken the UAE shopping scene by storm. “The concept behind Feathers Fashion is to reflect the culture of the UAE. The heart of the brand is local, from the raw materials we use to the Arabian pattern designs. Our products make wonderful gifts and mementos, because you won’t find these pieces anywhere else in the world,” explains Basaeed. We love the camel leather wallets and funky watches here. Home décor enthusiasts will be in heaven at Mosaique, a high-end boutique at Nation Galleria. A labour of love is perhaps the best way to describe multi-brand boutique, LA Rags at Al Seef Village Mall on Salam Street. The California-inspired fashion store, which started life in the living room of part-time designer and personal shopper Salma Saad, was originally called Mirabelle Boutique, but was re-branded when the store moved premises and introduced menswear to its range. The boutique stocks everything from floaty maxi dresses to shoes, swimwear and accessories, and Saad travels far and wide to acquire her carefully curated selection. Contact: 02 6586512
MINBART
The first of its kind in Abu Dhabi, Minbart is a boutique and gallery at Al Raha Beach that acts as a creative platform for artists and designers to display their pieces. “There are lots of creative communities around and they were lacking a platform to showcase their work – hence the idea for Minbart was born,” says founder and owner, Sheikha Alia Al Qassimi. The boutique collaborates with a number of local, regional and international designers and now stocks an upbeat collection of fashion pieces, artworks and furniture items. Contact: 02 5522332

Located in the luxurious Park Hyatt Abu Dhabi Hotel and Villas on Saadiyat Island, the spa takes its aesthetical lead from the beauty of Arabia while treatments highlight the latest in innovation. The oxygen awakening facial is a clear example of this contemporary approach. As global jet setters will know, it doesn’t take long for the strain of constant travel to show on the skin’s appearance, making this treatment especially prevalent for frequent flyers. The facial decongests, oxygenates and reinvigorates the skin using delicate massage techniques alongside products that have been especially designed to promote the release of pure oxygen into the skin’s outer layer. The overall effect encourages cell renewal to create a lighter and brighter complexion leaving the face looking and feeling younger. Contact: 02 4071170

Set within the indulgent confines of Sofitel Abu Dhabi Corniche, So SPA offers several liquidbased therapies that hone in on the importance of keeping the body hydrated. Feel your worries ease away as you sink into an indulgent 45-minute milk bath. Infusing Shiffa products with aromatic rose extracts, the bath aids relaxation while leaving skin feeling ultra soft and nourished. The spa’s signature 90-minute Turkish bath also offers a great way to unwind. As soft steam envelops the body, a skilled therapist uses black soap to effectively exfoliate the body. Infused with shea butter, this rich antioxidant soap also treats skin problems and irritations before the session draws to a close with a fragrant massage. Contact: 02 8137777
As the name suggests, Zen the Spa at Al Ain Rotana seeks to bestow its visitors with a sense of serenity and relaxation while in the oasis city. Drawing on the expertise derived from holistic Asian philosophies, the spa’s signature hot stone massage uses expert movements and hot volcanic stones to ease deep-seated muscle tension. Warmth is often used to not only relieve chronic pain but also create a calming effect. While massage points can be tailored to treat each individual’s main areas of concern, the hot stones are positioned on precise acupressure points. As the muscles warm and relax, they become easier for the therapist to manipulate. Also home to a sauna, steam room, plunge pool and hammam area, Zen the Spa is the perfect place to while away the day. Contact: 02 5961100

Perfect for diners looking for a little joviality with their meal, take prime position at the counter and enjoy the showmanship of the grill masters in action as they expertly prepare skewers of succulent cuts that are enthusiastically served straight to your plate on long wooden paddles. Robata ingredients range from the menu’s Kobe beef and free-range chicken to black cod fillet and king crab leg. Contact: 02 4041921
With its smattering of bright fixtures, funky lighting and kitsch wall décor, Circo, which means circus in Italian, certainly lives up to its quirky reputation. Located in the InterContinental Abu Dhabi, Circo brings its carnival vibe to the capital. Discover a host of typical Tuscan fare and much-loved Mediterranean classics, many of which have been given a contemporary spin. Tuck into sumptuous dishes including quail and porcini mushroom risotto, tagliatelle with slow cooked Wagyu bolognese, panseared duck breast with cauliflower purée and veal ossobuco with pecorino and thyme-crusted rack of lamb. HERITAGE VILLAGE Designed to resemble a traditional oasis village, this quaint attraction provides an interesting glimpse into the emirate’s past. There’s a Bedouin tent, reconstructions of original date-palm houses, an example of the ancient falaj irrigation system and a small spice shop selling dried herbs and other trinkets.

EMIRATES PALACE The iconic palace takes pride of place at the tip of the Abu Dhabi Corniche and embodies the luxury lifestyle the capital has cultivated. Until recently, the most expensive hotel ever to be built, the impressive structure is richly adorned with precious materials. Twelve different shades of marble can be spotted in the cavernous atrium, while the central dome holds dual records as both the largest in the world and the greatest gilded expanse ever created in one building.

ASK THE CONCIERGE
Hisny Hassan, head concierge at Radisson Blu Hotel, Abu Dhabi Yas Island, reveals some of the island’s top attractions
1
Over the last few decades, Abu Dhabi has quickly emerged as one of the world’s bestvalue tourist destinations because of its excellent infrastructure and interesting attractions. The capital’s famed Yas Island, for example, has developed into an ultimate entertainment centre with iconic world-class theme parks such as Ferrari World Abu Dhabi and Yas Waterworld waterpark as well as the famed Yas Marina Circuit, home to the Formula 1 Etihad Airways Abu Dhabi Grand Prix that brings together celebrities and fans of the sport every year. I really believe that Yas Island is one of the best addresses in the capital for weekend getaways for residents and a longer stay option for those who are travelling from afar. It’s a great entertainment hub with a host of recreational facilities and excellent leisure choices. For a memorable day, visitors should make the most of the sunshine at Yas Beach and shop for the latest fashions at Yas Mall. Afterwards they can tee off on the beautiful Yas Links Abu Dhabi golf course, enjoy gourmet fare at leading hotels and experience the best of island life at
“FOR THE BEST VIEWS, I RECOMMEND SUNDOWNERS AT SHA MS POOL BAR AT R ADISSON BLU HOTEL WHICH OVERLOOKS THE YAS LINKS GOLF COURSE AND PRESENTS A REFRESHING ARR AY OF DRINKS”
1 Shams Pool Bar 2 Etihad Airways F1 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix 3 Filini Italian Bar & Restaurant
Yas Marina which has become a vibrant dining, lifestyle, fitness and entertainment district. For the best views, I recommend sundowners at Shams Pool Bar at Radisson Blu Hotel which overlooks the Yas Links golf course and presents a refreshing array of drinks and shisha. Belgian Beer Café is another ideal place to unwind after a busy day exploring thanks to its al fresco terrace – don’t forget to order our irresistibly crispy Belgian fries. For a romantic dinner, Filini Italian Bar & Restaurant ticks all the boxes and guests can choose to enjoy a nice Italian meal inside the cosy restaurant or outside by the terrace that presents beautiful views of the golf course. Visitors to the capital quickly find that there is a lot to experience in Abu Dhabi. Aside from the more conventional tourist activities such as visiting the magnificent Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque and heading out to the Arabian desert on an adrenaline-fuelled 4x4 safari, you can take advantage of the sunny weather with a host of watersports at Yas Beach as well as unique kayaking tours around the Eastern Mangroves National Park. Stop by the Abu Dhabi Falcon Hospital to learn more about the national bird and the history of falconry as you watch them glide around the hospital’s unique free-flight aviary. By valuing its heritage and cultural traditions, Abu Dhabi continues to set itself apart. Rapidly transforming into a dynamic, cosmopolitan city, the capital has attracted so much international attention in the last couple of years. It is one of the most talked about cities in the world because there is so much going on. Every day there is something new in Abu Dhabi and I can only see it developing further into one of the top 10 destinations in the world.
