—— The city’s favourite fashion event is back and in a brand new location. Returning for its seventh edition, Fashion Forward Dubai (FFWD) will now showcase its runway and style extravaganza at Dubai Design District (d3). Also new this season, thanks to its continued success in providing a forum for the region’s rising talent, is an official endorsement from the Dubai Design and Fashion Council, a move that will no doubt further strengthen the event’s reach and influence. Commenting on this support, Dr. Amina Al Rustamani, chairperson of Dubai Design and Fashion Council (DDFC) says: “Initiatives like Fashion Forward Dubai are making a substantial contribution by offering regional designers the opportunity to enhance their creativity and providing a platform for emerging talent to propel their careers. DDFC is proud to support Fashion Forward’s seventh edition.”

Taking place from March 31 to April 3, style seekers will be able to peruse the latest apparel and accessory designs from some of the hottest names in local talent in a new custom-built space. In addition to previewing collection shows and presentations, visitors can also attend the popular d3 Fashion Talks. Hosted by industry insiders – which have previously included Steven Kolb, the CEO of the Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA); the creator of New York Fashion Week, Fern Mallis; supermodel Yasmin Le Bon and The Sartorialist founder Scott Schuman – these panel discussions provide key insights into the rapidly evolving world of fashion. There will also be a host of food and beverage stations along with special areas dedicated to networking. Bong Guerrero, CEO and co-founder of FFWD, reveals: “We are delighted to present A/W ’16 from our new location at Hai d3. FFWD’s success so far would not have been possible without the support of our strategic partner, d3, and as Dubai’s hub for creativity and design, the space offers the ideal home for FFWD. These advancements for our seventh edition are a huge milestone and an incredible step forward for the designers we support as well as the maturity of this platform upon which to showcase the Middle East’s exceptional design talent.”

Touch of class ——— Bringing chic Italian design to the region, Capritouch has opened its flagship Middle East store at The Dubai Mall
Homegrown Italian maison Capritouch is something of a newcomer to the luxury scene. Yet since its launch in 2009, the brand has gone from strength to strength and developed into a dynamic design house with a new boutique in Dubai. Capritouch includes apparel, accessories, footwear, fabrics, works of art and designer furniture from the Capritouch Home Collection – all of which are exclusively made in Italy. The brand has opened its first store in the region with a stunning boutique at The Dubai Mall. Partnered with Ludovica Andreoni, the talented Italian designer behind LA Jewellery, the firm creates truly stunning hand-made adornments. The metals used by Ludovica Andreoni are primarily white, yellow, pink or burnished gold, combined at times with enamels of all colours, or with precious stones ranging from diamonds in all colours (from classic white, to brown, black and yellow) to rubies, sapphires and emeralds. Not to mention semiprecious stones such as amethysts, garnet gems, coral and turquoises all set to create intense shades of colour with a touch a sheer elegance. 3

Tonino Cacace, Capritouch CEO, says: “Today Dubai is the place to be with millions of potential customers. The boutique will offer a different type of retail experience, offering a glimpse of life on Capri Island.” The Capritouch story began at the prestigious Capri Palace Hotel & Spa, one of the island’s most beautiful venues frequented by Europe’s stylish set. It was here, at the atelier of the historic Mariorita boutique, within the hotel, that Capritouch came to life. Drawing on the finest Italian production techniques, the team has created a selection of fashion, crafts, furniture, art and architecture, all now carrying the Capritouch name. Capturing the ‘Dolce Vita’ of 1950’s and 60’s Capri, the maison’s fashion line showcases bold colours and fabrics. Linens, cashmere and silks in myriad hues are evocative of the sophisticated fashions from the streets of Capri. Each piece is handmade, ensuring quality at every stage, from cutting to finishing. Very important for Capritouch are the handcrafted sandals, each adapted to the preferences of each customer. In-house cobblers have created more than 200 models to choose from, which are then made in front of clients to preserve the timehonoured shoe-making craft. The bespoke nature of each piece means sandals can be personalised with embellishments such as precious stones and Swarovski crystals, by customising the heel height or initials monogrammed on the leather sole. Artisans from the island also craft the exclusive Capritouch Ballerina sandals, created entirely by hand. Each piece is then finished with Swarovski crystals and bows. Cacace adds: “The idea that everything is handmade and Italian for Capritouch and Ludovica Andreoni jewels, is our main value.”
Capritouch is distributed in Capri, Bodrum, Marmaris, New York, Miami, Paris and Dubai. Ludovica Andreoni is also distributed in Rome. Visit: capritouch.com and ludovicandreoni.it

Boho Vibes
——
The king of magpie exoticism, Gucci’s Alessandro Michele led the procession of geek-chic eclecticism with stunning effect. As the show notes aptly described, the collection offered a ‘treasure chest of aesthetic references’. From sequins, lace and embroidery to glitter, ruff les and vintage bows, the only rule when pairing pieces and prints with such unabashed brazenness, is to wear them with confidence. Hot on the heels is Lanvin with designs that boast almost graffiti-like prints as well as pop art aesthetics of the maison’s heels, handbags and perfume bottles. Accessories here are key. So don’t be shy, brave those chandelier earrings, pile on statement necklaces and keep those lapels brooch laden.
Ushering in a new era of disco divas, the runways edged out the usual slinky sequined numbers in favour of a fearless new sheen. Designs, while dipped in a decadent dose of high shine fabrics and finishes, took on an unconventional relaxed silhouette. Among our favourites were the sassy pieces seen at Lanvin. Follow suit with gem toned sequined two-pieces and rough-around-edges evening dresses or layer up with a glitzy blazer for an androgynous after dark look. Edgy and modern, we’re loving the trend’s fresh take, as well as the new label directions, seen at Nina Ricci for Guillaume Henry’s second season – think sultry boudoir vibes – and Massimo Giorgetti’s debut at Emilio Pucci.
Peasant blouses, folksy frocks and gypsy-inspired skirts have long been a staple of the festival scene and this summer is no different. Sporting a more mature take, this season there are several big names that have this luxed up bohemian trend nailed. Etro in particular has caught our eye. Borrowing from the antique clothing aesthetic of Eastern Europe, luxurious silk robes and embroidered silk tulle dresses with tiered ruffles and flouncy layers are among the standout pieces, all perfectly paired with pretty satin ballerina slippers. Elsewhere, a tribal approach was spotted at Fendi and Valentino, especially. With the latter Italian label mixing in splash of tie-dye to elevate its Out of Africa theme.

This season the tough wearing utility favourite enjoys a new lease on life with this closet classic undergoing a chic makeover. Getting remarkably more dressed up over at Alexander McQueen and Alice & Olivia, discover hard-wearing denim laden with floral appliqués and intricate detailing then cheekily finished off with a flash of midriff. For those who prefer a more delicate approach, Chanel has us swooning over its bold indigo and pale blue-washed separates, the epitome of casual luxe, while Chloé opts for frayed hems and raw edges to reveal a seemingly undone look. Simply put, gone are the days of drainpipe denims, now is the time to slip into relaxed cuts, from highrise and flared to straight-legged and ankle-cropped.
Summer’s ubiquitous floral is hardly a style revolution, yet the sombre tone offered by this season’s moody blooms gives the seasonal print a fresh, sophisticated feel. Enticing us with not only the sheer choice of gorgeous floral prints but also the multiple guises in which designs were presented, think billowing maxi gowns, slouchy pyjama suits, midi prom dresses and tailored two-pieces, Dolce & Gabbana’s Riviera love affair comes up trumps. Embellished tiaras and flirty floral shades are also highly encouraged. For wistful femininity, we’re still pining over the dainty appliqué detailing at Alice & Olivia and Erdem’s fall-inspired watercolour prints, perfect for transitioning the trend into after dark.

The staple piece of any guy’s wardrobe, the humble jacket can have transformative super powers when it comes to style. Simply look to the lover of all things extravagant, Tom Ford, for designs that stand out from the crowd. For a trendy alternative to the traditional tuxedo pairings, snap up printed dinner jackets that deliver plenty of impact. Other stand-out designs and opulent prints also graced the runways of Hugo Boss, Louis Vuitton and Gucci ensuring that, this season, there’s an art to covering up.
Keen to reinforce the fact that there is something effortlessly stylish about a head-to-toe muted colour palette, several top labels are leading a rebellion against summer’s typical clash of colour. Givenchy’s urban gent pairs a steely gaze with all-white and cool opaque ensembles that smoothly mix tailoring with more casual elements. Elsewhere, Brioni steps up the game with traditional officewear, playing off subtle differences in texture and tone to create a more polished yet fashion-forward look.
If its appearance on countless catwalks were any indication, the reign of the super-sized stripe is here to stay. While the monochrome variation we’re so familiar with was undoubtedly present, this season, its best to shake up your wardrobe with a bold splash of colour. Don’t know where to start? The linear movement really comes into its own over at Salvatore Ferragamo with the Italian label’s shirt and jumper combos in eye-catching shades. For on-trend points, pair with luxe baseball caps and skinny ties.

TALKING ART ——— Cartier’s high jewellery collections reflect the maison’s rich heritage and innovative vision
There’s something exquisitely enchanting about Maison Cartier. With a legendary history built on crafting exceptional jewellery, it’s little wonder that Cartier is renowned for being the ‘jeweller to kings’. Despite being founded in 1847, well over a century ago, its name is still revered far and wide today. From sparkling classical designs to iconic creations from the modern era, Cartier has played a pivotal role in the evolution of decorative arts. It’s a fact that not many people in the world are aware of, which is why Pierre Rainero’s role is all the more important. As the image, style and heritage director at Cartier, Rainero is tasked with overseeing all contemporary designs from the maison, as well as other communications and strategy-related issues. He is also in charge of the Heritage Department, supervising the famed Cartier Collection that consists of nearly 1,500 historical pieces that, collectively, tell the story of the maison in an inimitable fashion. The chapter on jewellery designer and style icon Jeanne Toussaint, Cartier’s creative director of jewellery from 1933 until 1970, remains one of the most interesting. She’s credited with influencing a whole new dictionary of style with the incorporation of bold colours, a playful mix of stones and a more whimsical approach to designs. “There are strong creations illustrating innovations in the world of jewellery such as the first use of platinum in the beginning of the 20th century, pre Art-Deco pieces that made Cartier a pioneer in terms of using steel and other pieces showing figurative work around animals, flowers and nature in general, which is very distinctive of Cartier.
“Many, many pieces are priceless not only because of their value on the art market but because of their significance in terms of the evolution of decorative arts,” explains Rainero. Cartier’s enigmatic panthère motif is an example of the house’s timeless allure, with the design taking pride of place across a dedicated collection of meticulously crafted rings, earrings, necklaces, brooches and bracelets. “As a pattern, the panthère was invented by Cartier in 1914 and, at the time, it was the idea to play with two colours – black and white – so onyx and diamonds on platinum as a motif. It was a sort of stylisation of the panther animal and its fur, and progressively, by the mid or late 1940s, it became more and more naturalistic and figurative. It was very successful because of the obvious symbolism that was behind it for women. The idea of a very elegant, independent and sometimes ferocious animal came at the right moment in history when women could express themselves in a way that was impossible before. The symbol of the panther is still strong today, because it’s related to that conquest of independence for women,” says Rainero. As the main contact for major international museums and cultural institutions as well as exhibitions dedicated to Cartier creations, Rainero’s job is far from easy but it’s an exciting endeavour. “My responsibilities are extremely diverse, whether it’s related to image and style purposes, or heritage responsibilities. However the most important aspect is the creations of today and tomorrow. The highlight of this part is the Friday morning meeting with the

“THE NEW ÉTOURDISSANT COLLECTION IS ABOUT EMOTION. IT REFLECTS THE DEEP MEANING OF JEWELLERY FOR MEN AND WOMEN AND HOW THERE IS A FASCINATION FOR STONES; HOW YOU CAN BE LOST IN ADMIRING STONES BECAUSE IT’S A MIR ACLE FROM NATURE”
committee where all the projects in terms of creations are presented and discussed,” he explains, adding that even designs for bespoke jewellery orders are considered very carefully and involve a wellthought out process. “Special orders have always been part of our activities. If you look at our archives, there were books for our own stock and books that were dedicated to special orders, and we still work in the same way. The process begins with a customer’s request to the sales staff at any of our boutiques around the world. All projects come to our studios in Paris and, for each client briefing, we would present three different possibilities that have all been approved internally before being presented.” Over the years, the maison’s drive and passion for innovation has only strengthened with modern-day icons such as the Love bracelet, Trinity ring and Halo tiara considered some of the most covetable today. Cartier’s recent Étourdissant high jewellery collection, inspired by the Riviera and its changing colour palettes, has elevated this tradition with a stunning set of beautiful one-of-a-kind pieces that are brought to life using colourful stones such as diamonds, sapphires, emeralds and rubies. “The new Étourdissant collection is about emotion. It reflects the deep meaning of jewellery for men and women and how there is a fascination for stones; how you can be lost in admiring stones because it’s a miracle from nature. Also Étourdissant is amazing because of the craftsmanship involved and how delicate it is. It’s a
mix between the unexpected and the illusion of movement that only very hard materials can provoke. “Everything that goes into the direction – more fluidity and more movement – is linked to pushing the boundaries of high jewellery craftsmanship. There are many pieces in this collection that are worthy of attention. For example the woven diamonds on the necklace is an example of innovation even if it’s linked to an Indian tradition. “One of the main points at Cartier is that we want to be distinct, to be recognised by a very strong and specific style. Within that frame, many influences are present in our creations, as well as inspirations from different cultures. That’s very Cartier, to be curious about cultures. In our style today, influences come from many different continents and periods from Islamic to Asian culture; Russia, ancient Egypt and even classical ancient Greece or the Roman Empire. All those influences are very strong in our style today.” Cartier has always been the embodiment of style and new wearable works of art continue to pay tribute to the house’s famed heritage, thanks in part to the creative efforts of its dedicated team of master craftsmen and artisans. Rainero adds: “Everything we do is totally fresh and demonstrates a new direction, but within the frame of a very strong Cartier style. That’s the challenge our designers have: to create a surprise and bring something new and, at the same time, create the comment, ‘oh this is very Cartier’. This is linked to the tradition that is deeply in our roots, to permanently innovate and create.”

Standing proud and majestic, the regal falcon is a beloved emblem of the United Arab Emirates. Over generations, its presence has been intricately woven into the fabric of the nation, transitioning from a much needed survival practice of the region’s desert dwellers into a symbol of national strength and a growing sporting scene. For visitors eager to get up close and personal with these incredible creatures, Royal Shaheen Events is a great place to start. We caught up with operations manager, Hendri Du Toit, to delve further into the fascinating art of falconry. Du Toit, a South African native, has been working with falcons in the region since 2010. The peregrine, saker and barbary falcons are among the most common species here in the UAE, although Du Toit and his team are well-versed in handling a variety of falcon, as well as eagles, owls and hawks. “We work with around 50 birds on a daily basis, and much like people, they all have different characteristics and behavioural traits. A typical day of a falconer starts at sunrise. It involves preparing their food, weighing them, checking to see if they alright to fly and getting them ready for event demonstrations, which we do on a
daily basis,” he explains. “One of our most popular packages here at Royal Shaheen is the Interactive Falconry experience. We pick up a small group of guests and drive them out into the desert where they have the chance to interact with the birds. A lot of guests are nervous the first time they handle the falcons, as they can look a bit intimidating, so we always handle them first and show guests how we work with the birds, go through all the safety aspects and explain how to interact in a safe, comfortable way.” Du Toit reveals that a food-based relationship is the most common form of interaction between falcons and humans. “Falcons generally don’t recognise individuals. There are occasions when certain birds may interact better with certain trainers, but usually it’s down to the food being offered. That’s also how we work with the falcons during the display shows. We give the guest a special glove to wear and although the falcon has never seen the person before, it will fly to them as they know that there is food available.” Guests are often surprised to find out that a falcon’s diet is strictly carnivorous and doesn’t involve any plant material at all.
“A T YPICAL DAY OF A FALCONER STARTS AT SUNRISE. IT INVOLVES PREPARING THEIR FOOD, WEIGHING THEM, CHECKING TO SEE IF THEY ARE ALRIGHT TO FLY AND GET TING THEM READY FOR ANY EVENT DEMONSTR ATIONS, WHICH WE DO ON A DAILY BASIS”

Modern day training techniques see falcons fly after food attached to a parachute, which is placed at the end of a long line and carried by a special drone. This extended lead also keeps the falcon safe from the drone’s rotating blades.
“WE ALSO HAVE BIRDS THAT ARE TR AINED TO WORK AROUND FIL M CREWS AND ON CA MER A. AS A WELL-RECOGNISED SYMBOL OF THIS PART OF THE WORLD, FALCONS ARE OFTEN USED FOR ADVERTISING, FIL M AND PHOTO SHOOTS”

Visitors taking part in the company’s tours and experiences will also have the opportunity to learn more about the history of these birds and ancient UAE tradition of falconry. One of the most surprising facts for many is that although the connection between falcons and local Bedouins dates back over 2,000 years, falcons aren’t actually indigenous to the region. “As you can imagine the nomadic life of the Bedouins was one of great difficulty, especially when it came to hunting. So to substitute their summer diet, which was pretty meagre, at the beginning of the winter season around October, the Bedouins would trap the falcons and train them for about three to four weeks to hunt. That’s how they would get the meat and protein to feed their families. In Europe, in the Middle Ages, falconry was the sport of kings and so only royalty were allowed to fly them. But for Bedu people, falcons were for everyone and an important way of putting food on the table. That’s why the birds are so special to local people.” Although instinctively falcons are migratory birds, thanks to modern day advancements like air-conditioning, these birds can now be kept and bred throughout the year. Technology has also helped further falcon training, something guests discover more about when out in the desert. “We use special drones and quadcopters for training, as well as navigation sensors that are attached to the bird. It’s a modern way to achieve a new level of fitness as the falcons have to fly higher and higher. This makes them exercise and train specific muscles, making them
stronger for racing and hunting. It’s become a very popular technique in the Middle East region,” says Du Toit. These exercises reinforce the falcon’s primal relationship with food – as Du Toit explains, it’s not the drone that the falcon hunts but rather the food. While it’s an all day job for the falconers, the birds manage to get a bit more of a break. “Once the morning falcons have been trained and fed, we can’t fly them again in the afternoon. So they return to our headquarters and we start with a new team in the afternoons as we do quite a few sunset falcon shows for different safari companies. We also have birds that are trained to work around film crews and on camera. As a well-recognised symbol of this part of the world, falcons are often used for advertising, film and photo shoots,” says Du Toit. In addition to new developments and the use of technology, many traditional elements are still involved in training and handling falcons. “Much of what is used today has been used for thousands of years. We still use a leather hood to cover the eyes of the falcon, once this happens the falcon is completely calm and relaxed. As the saying goes, out of sight out of mind, so this method helps reduce many stress factors associated with handling the birds. We also use leg tethers to secure the falcons and make sure they don’t attack each other when they are placed together.” Over the years the tradition of falconry has effortlessly evolved into a celebrated sport, encouraging people to discover more about these majestic birds and appreciate its status as a national symbol.

NATIONAL TREASURE ——— Efforts are underway to revive Arabia’s historic pearling trade
Long before the discovery of oil, pearls were an important source of wealth for the people of the United Arab Emirates. During the 18th and early 19th centuries, pearl divers would sail for four months at a time, working from sunrise to sunset, scouring the depths of the Gulf waters for this natural treasure. It was a very dangerous practice and diving equipment at the time was rudimentary. Divers had to take to the waters with just a nose clip, or fetam, fashioned from goat or gazelle horns and hold their breath to search for pearl oysters on the seabed. Their only lifeline back to the boat was a rope that would be used to haul the divers back to the surface. Pearling in the UAE died out in the early 1930s when the introduction of Japanese cultured pearls changed the face of the industry. Fortunately, the UAE’s rich pearling heritage is now undergoing a revival thanks to the efforts of RAK Pearls Holding that operates a dedicated pearl farm in the emirate of Ras Al Khaimah. “The project started in 2004 when my brother and I explored the feasibility of making pearls in the Arabian waters. The question was very simple – if this region was the most important for producing natural pearls why not bring it back again using modern technology,” explains Mohamed Al Suwaidi from RAK Pearl Holdings. Following the Japanese method of pearl culturing, a small mother of pearl bead is implanted into the oyster along with a tiny sliver of mantle tissue from another pearl. This then forms the nucleus around which the oyster naturally secretes layer after layer of nacre, the substance that forms the pearl. The pearl farm uses local pinctada radiata oysters, found wild in the waters of Ras Al Khaimah and across the Gulf region. Comparisons to Japan, regarded as the cultured pearl capital of the world, are to be expected but
Al Suwaidi reveals that there are inherent differences in quality and production. In Japan, oysters are no longer produced naturally and are instead prepared in labs but remain quite weak in comparison. The nutrient-rich mangrove ecosystem in Ras Al Khaimah presents an ideal environment for producing cultured pearls where oysters produce layers of coating three times faster. Pearls produced here can also reach 12mm in size while in Japan the average size remains about 8mm. In the past, hundreds of oysters were collected in the Gulf waters in the hope of finding a few natural pearls. Now, through exacting pearl culturing methods, the pearl farm in Ras Al Khaimah witnesses an average success rate of 65 to 80 percent for the entire harvest of about 40,000 oysters. “The best quality of pearls are used in jewellery, while others are kept for accessories and souvenirs. The rest can be crushed and grinded and used for medicine or cosmetics. Nothing goes to waste – the meat is used in restaurants and the shell itself can be polished to create mother of pearl,” says Al Suwaidi. Implanted oysters are carefully nurtured for around six to eight months on average before they are opened. Free from artificial bleaching and colouring, pearls produced in Ras Al Khaimah are of varied sizes, shapes and colours but each reflect a lustrous shine. An expert team, that combines the talents of people from Japan, Europe and the Arab world, ensures that the right days are chosen to harvest. “Oysters can grow for a year but if you choose the wrong day, you can end up with a dull shine or pearls with blemishes. We harvest in winter because summer heat makes the oyster produce more mother of pearl but cold water polishes it so that there’s high lustre. The secret lies in managing this process. At the end of the day, you are dealing with natural species so you have to be alert 24/7,” reveals Al Suwaidi.
These cultured Arabian pearls have already been used in exclusive jewellery pieces in collaboration with international brands, including British designer Stephen Webster and luxury watch and jewellery firm Mouawad. There’s been growing interest from around the world but Al Suwaidi insists that it’s about quality and not quantity. “We produce 40,000 pearls at the moment which is very little when compared to other markets like China that produce thousands of tonnes a year. Right now we want to raise awareness that there’s a new type of pearl in the market that has the same characteristics of the old Arabian pearl. Historically, our pearls were known for their lustre and colours and we want to retain that,” says Al Suwaidi. The hope is that Arabian pearls will once again be held in high regard around the world. “For us, pearls aren’t products – they are our history and culture. In my grandfather’s time, pearls were precious. It was what he lived on and, unfortunately today, people forget this. We are working on having pearl farms in Qatar, Saudi Arabia and Oman in the future with our know-how and through collaborations. Our dream is to revive the industry back to its glory days and be one of the most important producers of pearls.”
Myconcierge members can book the Abu Dhabi Pearl Journey to discover more about the UAE’s pearling past. Guests sail on an authentic jalboot – a traditional pearling boat – and enjoy Arabian hospitality as they try their hand at opening oysters. Any pearls found can be kept as a precious souvenir. The Abu Dhabi Pearl Journey costs AED500 per person. Visit: myco.ae/pearlauh

Particularly popular with neighbouring residents, the Al Barsha Pond Park caters perfectly to families and nearby communities. Encircling a large man-made lake, the picturesque park is dotted with quaint benches shaded under pretty floral canopies and lovely green banks that are ideal for hosting family get-togethers. There’s plenty of choice for sporty types as the park features a basketball court, tennis courts, mini football pitch and outdoor gym equipment. Not to mention three kids play areas to keep the little ones entertained. Whether on foot or by bicycle, the 2.5 kilometre padded jogging track and parallel cycle track is a great opportunity to enjoy the fresh spring breeze.
Nestled between Jumeirah Lake Towers’ soaring apartment buildings and sleek office blocks, this plush green space has been a welcome addition to the populated area. There’s nothing quite like exercising outdoors and visitors are encouraged to get to grips with the open-air gym equipment, hit the jogging track or even enjoy a bit of on-court basketball action. The amphitheatre regularly hosts pop-up events and arts and crafts markets where the charming stalls are a great place to pick up quirky one-off finds. During the cooler months, visitors can also catch a free weekend film screening under the stars at the open-air cinema. Z A B E E L PA R K

As well as being one of Dubai’s largest parks, Zabeel Park is also one of the region’s first technology themed parks with its lush green lawns home to interactive displays and free wi-fi. The sprawling space also packs in plenty of recreational and leisure facilities. Whether you’re hoping to visit the ice rink, amphitheatre, mini-cricket pitch or even just popping along to one of the park’s many children’s play areas, there’s plenty for the whole family to enjoy. Getting around the park is all part of the fun. Aside from the picturesque pathways and footbridges, you can cycle around on a rental bike, cruise along the lake in a pedal boat or hop onboard the miniature train tour with your kids. Visitors can also grab a bite to eat at several cute cafés and restaurants, or make the most of the weather by gathering a few friends and taking advantage of the park’s lovely barbecue areas.
Located near the bustling banks of Dubai Creek, this green oasis is the ideal urban retreat. For those seeking a quiet place to reflect, why not take a picnic basket and find a spot under a tree or a pull up a seat at a café and watch the world go by. The park’s cable car ride, which runs the length of the grounds, is fantastic for taking in the neighbourhood sights. If a more active afternoon is on the agenda, your little ones will love exploring Children’s City. The first of its kind in the UAE, this mini ‘city’ offers several educational aspects including a planetarium and nature centre, as well as interactive workshops and live demonstrations of scientific concepts. Afterwards pay a visit to the Dubai Dolpinarium where you can watch regular dolphin shows or enjoy a special dolphin swim encounter to observe these majestic creatures up close.

SETTING THE STANDARD ——— At world-renowned hotel Burj Al Arab, executive chef Maxime Luvara is the talent tasked with taking the property’s culinary offering to the next level
An institution in Dubai, Burj Al Arab has been generating headlines the world over since its very inception. Fifteen years on from its opening, and its reputation as one of the most luxurious hotels in the world is firmly assured. Looking ahead, ambitious plans for the hotel include the addition of a luxurious North Deck which will cover 10,000 square metres and reach 100 metres into the Arabian Gulf. Set to open soon, the space will house cabanas, hundreds of sun loungers, fresh and saltwater pools, a restaurant and bar. Spearheading the new dining venues is executive chef Maxime Luvara. “We have a great renovation plan for our F&B operation throughout the entire hotel. At the moment, we are very busy working on the North Deck that will open in May. As part of that, we will have a vibrant and exciting California-Santa Monica style restaurant, a new bar and a first class pool/beach area where our guests will have incredible views of the most iconic hotel in world. This hotel is an institution, a landmark for luxury, not only in Dubai but also in the hotel industry across the world,” says Luvara. Born in Italy and raised in France the chef joined Burj Al Arab in 2010, where he took over responsibility for the entire culinary operation, in charge of a team of 230 chefs across eight outlets and a banqueting venue, he has brought a real passion for food and a wealth of experience to the position. Luvara explains: “Over the course of 26 years, I worked under worldrenowned three-star Michelin chefs such as Alain Ducasse, Antoine Westermann and Michel Troisgros, as well as two star Michelin chef Christian Constant at Hôtel de Crillon in Paris. “In the first instance, I was actually inspired to become a chef by my mother from a really young age – I was 10 to be exact. I used to watch her and help in the kitchen. She is a great chef and has always encouraged me and pushed me to be passionate about food and cooking.” With a sophisticated international clientele who are extremely well-versed in contemporary gastronomy, Burj Al Arab presents a high culinary standard. “Our customers come from London, New York and Paris to name a few, and they expect the best in terms of quality, presentation and creativity.
“That means we put a lot of effort into each and every dish. It can start from a simple idea or a seasonal product that will trigger great creations. It is actually the most exiting, exhilarating and satisfying part of our job. Quality is an extremely important factor so we search for the very best ingredients,” Luvara says. He adds: “It is very easy in the UAE to get hold of great products from around the world. We have three weekly deliveries from Paris where we receive amazing produce that allows us to regularly refresh our menus, and most importantly, provide the best in seasonal fruit and vegetables. We also have a fantastic local supplier for organic products. It’s important to us to support local suppliers and they supply excellent herbs, vegetables and dairy products.” With a roster of restaurants that includes many of the city’s finest places to dine, Burj Al Arab’s culinary offering is undoubtedly impressive. One of the most spectacular is signature fine-dining seafood restaurant Al Mahara. The stunning venue boasts a magnificent floor-to-ceiling aquarium as the backdrop to the delicious fare. He says: “We are very lucky to have so many different styles of restaurants at Burj Al Arab. In Al Mahara, our whole sea bass cooked in salt crust is very popular, as is the king crab and foie gras ravioli. Our version of the Burrata salad is a top seller too, while the venison from New Zealand with poivrade sauce is just amazing, and is a definite favourite with guests. In our newly renovated restaurant, Bab Al Yam, we also have a fantastic selection of Mediterranean specialities while our brick oven in the restaurant promotes interaction between chefs and guests.” There are exciting plans in place for the months ahead, including Al Mahara’s new look debuting in September under the patronage of celebrity chef Nathan Outlaw. Looking forward to a bright outlook for both the hotel and the city, Luvara says: “I believe the emirate’s dining scene has extraordinary potential. The range of different restaurant styles and concepts here is vast. I personally think Dubai will become a fixture in the Michelin guide in the near future, which should add a huge amount of finesse to the city’s dining scene.” —— To book a table at any of Burj Al Arab’s restaurants, visit jumeirah.com

FEASTS OF FLAVOUR ——— Brunch with the best of them at these five-star venues
Brunching in Dubai has become something of an institution for residents and an essential bucket list wish for most tourists. What began several years ago as an unlimited buffet style lunch, generally served on Fridays from noon to four, has evolved into a decadent indulgence of gourmet cuisine generously washed down with free-flowing premium beverages. No longer restricted to merely Friday lunchtimes either, these days guests can take their pick from staggered feasts occurring throughout the week, and from day to night. A wonderfully social way to sample an eclectic mix of dishes from some of Dubai’s hottest venues, coupled with fantastic five-star surroundings and service, the Dubai brunch brigade shows no signs of slowing down. Here we present our pick of the city’s must-attend brunches.

GIARDINO
—— Very Versace is probably one of the best ways to describe the Giardino Brunch at Palazzo Versace. Much like the flamboyant fashion label the brunch at Giardino, one of the hotel’s signature restaurants, doesn’t shy away from extravagance and luxury in excess. The interiors offer a distinct nod to the tropics as vibrant jungle-themed prints are splashed across everything from the luxe Versace Home armchairs through to the liberally decorated walls. In turn, buffet stations are brimming with gourmet goodies, think oysters, sushi, lobster, foie gras and an entire section dedicated to a mouthwatering selection of plump burrata, all served, of course, on chic Versace chinaware. Before summer temperatures peak, we suggest booking a table on the terrace to truly appreciate the hotel’s stunning Dubai Creek views. If you’re looking to make it an all day affair, not only does the brunch offer pool access but guests can continue the party over at the venue’s neighbouring La Vita Bar with 50 percent off post-brunch drinks. The Giardino Brunch is held every Friday from 1 to 4pm, with prices starting from AED350 per person.

If an al fresco setting, cracking choice of cuisine, live band and free-flowing Champagne is your idea of a Friday well spent, then the recently launched Brasserie 2.0 brunch at Le Royal Meridien Beach Resort & Spa is the one for you. You’ll find dishes from all corners of the globe decked out across 10 cooking stations – think Fine de Claire oysters, British staple beef Wellington and South American prawns thermidor – and that’s all before you’ve even indulged in a wine tasting experience or stopped by the signature barbecue area which features an outdoor smoker for an added punch of flavour. A quick scout out of all that’s on offer is highly recommended before you start tucking in. Brasserie 2.0 also caters to the more health conscious with a fabulous edit of gluten-free dishes and a pop-up shake and juice bar. The dessert section, on the other hand, is bursting with sugary goodness that proves impossible to resist. The toffee apples and handmade chocolates are among our top picks. Alternatively, the cheese selection is enough to make even the most discerning connoisseur swoon. Rich, creamy and crumbly cheese can be perfectly paired with signature wines. After brunch, the celebrations continue over at Le Deck, with happy hour promotions on from 5 to 8pm. The Brasserie 2.0 Friday Brunch is held every Friday from 1:30 to 4:30pm and prices start from AED400 per person.

—— Michelin-starred chef Jason Atherton’s spectacular return to Dubai caused a flurry of excitement long before the doors at Marina Social swung open. Fortunately for foodies across the city, the hype was well deserved. Located within the InterContinental Dubai Marina, the venue’s cool urban vibe fits in well with the hotel’s contemporary feel. New to the brunch scene, the weekend brunches mean guests can pop by on either Friday or Saturday for a sumptuous choice of à la carte offerings. We’re talking delicate smoked sea trout and a brilliantly put-together pulled lamb and pesto pizza. This is comfort food with a cool, sophisticated edge. The drinks too are also well thought out, as crisp Bellinis, punchy Bloody Mary cocktails and exotic gin-infused iced teas are expertly served from trollies throughout the brunch. While this is a very ‘grown up’ brunch in a lot of ways, a mix of eclectic elements – everything from the food’s almost picnic-like presentation and playful drinks, down to the quirky skull emblazoned plates – brush off those usual formal dining constraints and allows for, as the name suggests, a very social way to dine. Both Friday’s Share & Social and Saturday Social brunch are available from 12:30 to 3:30pm every weekend. Prices start from AED315 and AED215 per person, respectively. 4

—— Liven up your Saturday afternoons with a trip to Sass Café at Dubai International Financial Centre. The legendary Monaco export is all about luxury and The Sass Brunch, which has aptly been described as New York glamour meets south of France decadence, is a clear extension of this. The boudoir-like décor radiates a sultry feel while the trendy tunes create an upbeat atmosphere. The culinary offerings prove just as enticing. Infused with Mediterranean flair, the à la carte menu created by executive chef Alexander Stumpf features a mix of classics and newly added brunch items such as creamy burrata served with grilled peaches and truffle honey along with the rich nougat glacé for dessert. Ideal for social get-togethers these scrumptious plates have been designed with sharing in mind. Once your cravings have been suitably satisfied, the food is cleared, lights are dimmed and the revelry really begins as the music steps up a gear. Driven by his love of Persian poetry, Iranian artist Abbas Saberi crafts storytelling art at his Swan Palace workshop in Souk Khan Murjan. RIVOLI
We love Al Zain for its wonderful blend of traditional and contemporary styles. The Bahraini jeweller’s main collections include Natural Pearls, Bridal, Bronze and High Jewellery, while there are also limited-edition pieces available. Natural Pearls is arguably the most striking of the collections, and each piece contains precious Bahraini pearls. The jeweller is steeped in tradition, and has its roots in the pearl trade of the 1930’s. The family-run business has gone from strength to strength since then with stores across the Middle East, and of course, in Dubai with a presence that includes a boutique at Mall of the Emirates.
This is the place to come for premium accessories, from watches and eye wear to leather goods and writing instruments. There are more than 380 stores in the region, and of course plenty peppered across Dubai, meaning there is ample opportunity to pop in and browse the hundreds of international brands under Rivoli’s umbrella. You’ll be spoiled for choice here with an array of must-have pieces from brands such as Omega, Longines, Rado, Gucci, Tissot and Montblanc. For an even more exclusive experience, The R Lounge at The H Hotel Dubai, caters to Rivoli’s VIP clientele with bespoke collections in a plush space.
We love shopping at Damas where you’ll find collections from some of the most prestigious jewellery houses. Whether you’re in the mood for something that sparkles from Graff Diamonds, a heritage feel with an exquisite piece from Fabergé or a Roberto Coin design straight from the red carpet, there is something to suit all tastes. Established in 1907, from the start Damas was known for exceptional craftsmanship. Twenty years after opening its first store in the Gold Souk in 1959, Damas has become one of the region’s biggest jewellery brands. DUBAI CREEK, SOUKS AND DUBAI MUSEUM The heart of the city, the Creek is a stunning spot to catch a glimpse of authentic Dubai. See dhows (traditional boats) ply their trade along the waters while early morning visitors will see fishermen at work on the river banks. Also in this part of the city is Dubai Museum, which makes for a fascinating day out with interactive displays and exhibits charting the emirate’s history from its pearl diving days. Stop by the gold, spice and perfume souks for some traditional treasures before leaving this vibrant area.

ASK THE CONCIERGE
Ramamurthy Purushotham, chief concierge at Ramada Plaza Jumeirah Beach Residence recommends the city’s finest al fresco activities
1
Dubai is at its most vibrant in April. Make the most of the sunshine by enjoying parasailing, and windsurfing along the emirate’s pristine coastline. This is also one of the best times to explore the city by bicycle or on a traditional dhow cruise over serene waterways. This city really is a haven for food aficionados and there’s plenty of al fresco options to choose from, especially along The Walk at Jumeirah Beach Residence (JBR). For a unique dining experience, head to Ramada Plaza Jumeirah Beach Residence that is ideally located between The Walk and Jumeirah Beach. The hotel’s signature Fogueira Restaurant, located on the 35th floor, is Dubai’s first Brazilian Churrascaria. From the restaurant’s terrace, guests can enjoy stunning views of Dubai Marina and Palm Jumeirah as 15 different unlimited cuts of meat are served directly to their table. When it comes to shopping, my first recommendation would be to visit The Dubai Mall, the region’s premier shopping, lifestyle and entertainment destination. With more than 1,200 stores and a host of world-class attractions,

such as an indoor ice rink, the world’s largest indoor aquarium, as well as a mesmerising dancing fountain show just outside, the mall really elevates the modern day shopping experience. The Beach, adjacent to JBR, is another retail highlight in the city. Formed around a pedestrian esplanade, it features an eclectic mix of stores and restaurants. This month is also the last opportunity to explore this season’s edition of Global Village. The open-air entertainment complex is made up of various pavilions that represent countries from around the world, each selling authentic wares that make ideal souvenirs. Another unique visitor experience is Dubai Miracle Garden. As someone who has lived and worked here for a long time, I consider it to be one of the city’s best-kept secrets. It really is a unique attraction, with its landscaped gardens showcasing a wide variety of flowers arranged in different shapes and designs, including hearts, stars, pyramids and other charming displays. The emirate is also well known for its iconic architecture and Burj Khalifa, the world’s tallest building, is definitely one of its greatest features. Palm Jumeirah is another great place to visit. It’s unbelievable how gorgeous this manmade island is. The best way to visit Palm Jumeirah is by hopping aboard the Palm Monorail. The monorail travels at an elevated height, so many of the area’s attractions are clearly visible to passengers. Those keen on learning more about the story of Dubai and the country’s past should also take the time to explore Dubai Creek. After a long day touring the best of the city’s sights and attractions, visitors can enjoy a relaxing massage at a luxury spa or unwind by the beach to make the most of Dubai’s pristine coastline and glorious weather. 3
