‘The Souk at Qaryat Al Beri’ is a unique venue and the first of its kind in Abu Dhabi. Built on two levels, The Souk is an interesting fusion of Arabian architecture with a Venetian theme, which together reflects traditional Arab hospitality. Water canals meander through The Souk and nearby properties with abra boats ferrying hotel guests from the Shangri-La Hotel to various locations. Several restaurants and coffee shops have alfresco dining terraces that overlook the waters and afford a view of the picturesque landscape.

A CUT ABOVE ——— Concierge catches up with Alain Schimel, Zilli founder and chairman, about the importance of fashion and family
Championing inimitable craftsmanship, high quality textiles and a keen eye for style, it’s easy to see why Zilli is now a firm fixture on the radar of today’s urban gent. From a humble workshop in Lyon to a name that is respected globally for luxury menswear, Maison Zilli’s meteoric rise is nothing short of remarkable. Reflecting fine French elegance with Italian heart, the enigmatic family-owned business already boasts a presence in over 20 countries, including the United Arab Emirates, and shows no signs of slowing down. Famed for its fashion-forward thinking and exemplary technique, much of Zilli’s success stems from the creation of the first luxury leather jacket in 1970. A jacket that, even decades later, remains extremely covetable. While a luxe leather jacket is considered a mainstay in any modern wardrobe today, Maison Zilli was chief ly responsible for elevating its style status with bold designs crafted from exotic skins. Think slick jackets made with peccary and crocodile skin, while details such as silk linings in dynamic patterns and triple-stitched seams quickly became hallmarks of the brand. And the trailblazer behind it all was Alain Schimel. Despite a short vocational detour, during which he almost pursued a career in business management, Schimel confesses he’s “always been impassioned by style and elegance”. Even at a young age he was surrounded by clothes, as his parents owned a coatmaking workshop in Lyon and opened several shops in the French city. “By chance, when I was 25, I went with my father to his Italian tailor Teofilo Zilli in Lyon and was immediately impressed with his craftsmanship when working with leather. He may not have been great as a suit tailor but was really a master when it came to working on skins and furs. I quickly decided to invest in Zilli’s workshop and we
became partners,” explains Schimel. Right from the start, his focus was on desirable outfits that weren’t available in the market at the time – starting with sporty leather jackets in very luxurious fabrics that were, above all, as light and comfortable as possible. “I travelled a lot and brought the most unexpected leathers I could find to Zilli. It was a permanent challenge to work on all the different categories of hides, most of them exotic, and it was kind of a revolution at the time.” Recounting the inspiration behind his avantgarde leather jacket, Schimel explains: “I wanted to give men freedom by going against the trend of the very formal suits at that time and offer them something special, unique and emotional. That was the ultimate sensation of luxury – fantastic, rare and sensuous skins for exceptional jackets as light as silk. I knew it was crazy to work on these kind of clothes at the time but I have always had faith in the products, combining Zilli’s know-how and my intuition to find the best materials and quality that would make the difference.” Soon enough, Schimel was joined by his wife and children, and 50 years later and Zilli is still very much a family-owned business, growing from just four people in the first workshop in 1965 to nearly 400 employees worldwide today. “I feel lucky to work with my family. As a family business, it means we can make decisions more quickly and that we can tackle challenges and take more risks. It also means we can trust our intuition. Actually, the main challenge we face is to avoid talking about Zilli all the time and preserve our personal life. It’s not an easy subject as we are all passionate about what we do. A few years ago my daughter-in-law and sonin-law joined us too, so we act like an Italian house with all the family on board,” he says.

This season, the Spring/Summer 2016 collection echoes the brand’s signature blend of laid-back luxury championing soft, fluid designs and drea my palette of blues
While its trademark leather jackets remain the house’s core business, since 1996 Zilli’s main collection has come to include suits, jackets, jeans, knitwear, shirts, ties, shoes, bags and leather goods. This season, the Spring/Summer 2016 collection echoes the brand’s signature blend of laid-back luxury as it champions soft, fluid designs and a dreamy palette of blues. Once again jackets prove to be the hero pieces, in particular Xiam, a featherweight, quilted silk number; Xavier, a velvety calfskin cover-up and Xerus, in a bold cobalt blue with contrasting orange stitching – all sporting plenty of springtime style. Take your pick from casual separates, comprised of 100 percent linen joggers, boat-neck knitwear and silk and bamboo tees, as well as soft calfskin Derbies, espadrilles and funky loafers with alligator braiding and velvet orange details. For more formal occasions, however, the striking midnight blue dinner jacket is a definite evening essential. For the first time, Zilli also introduces caiman snake scales to leather goods which is brilliantly paired with other rich textiles, most notably silk in the Boomerang collection and a dapper new messenger, briefcase and clutch from the Classic range which combines the exotic skin with new-grain calfskin. Despite the house’s continued new additions, to the enigmatic Alain Schimel, a good luxury jacket is still as much of a fashion investment as an expensive timepiece. “For me, classic never means boring. It means real value, true elegance and timeless appeal. I think a classic piece is as precious as a high-complication watch that you keep for ages. Then you give your jacket to your son and it becomes more and more appealing over the years – never too trendy and never out of fashion. Our peccary leather jackets are a good example of this definition as are our simple cashmere and vicuna coats with fur lining.”
Maison Zilli has come a long way thanks in part to the dedicated craftsmen and their invaluable skills. “We still have people who have been with the company ever since the first collection launched in 1970. Before they retire, they will pass down their know-how and train the next generation of craftsmen. I am very proud that the artisans in our Lyon workshops were awarded France’s prestigious ‘Entreprise du Patrimoine vivant’ (Living Heritage Company) in 2011 for their savoir-faire. In fact, we’re the first men’s luxury company to receive it,” says Schimel with pride, adding that the Maison is now looking to the future. “We cannot count on just our history and recognition to help us accelerate the business. We still don’t have a certain level of brand awareness in some parts of the world such as Asia or South America. But it’s good in a way and my children will have to go further in the development of Zilli. It’s already been quite a success despite our young age.” For Zilli, the Middle East remains an important market. Partnering with BinHendi Enterprises, the Maison boasts three stores in Dubai – Wafi City, Mall of the Emirates and The Dubai Mall – with plans to expand to Abu Dhabi. Speaking about the future of the menswear fashion industry, Schimel believes the focus will now be on innovating and developing new technical fabrics that are comfortable without compromising on the service aspect, including made-to-measure requests and bespoke orders. With Zilli’s avant-garde approach to men’s fashion, there’s a lot to be excited about, as he explains: “Succeeding in the transmission of our rich heritage is a challenge but I am confident that we will manage this with patience and time. Zilli is, for me and my family, an extraordinary story and adventure. I’d never hesitate to do it all over again.”

While the monochrome variation we’re so familiar with was undoubtedly present, this season, its best to shake up your wardrobe with a bold splash of colour. Don’t know where to start? The linear movement really comes into its own over at Salvatore Ferragamo with the Italian label’s shirt and jumper combos in eye-catching shades. For on-trend points, pair with luxe baseball caps and skinny ties.
Keen to reinforce the fact that there is something effortlessly stylish about a head-to-toe muted colour palette, several top labels are leading a rebellion against summer’s typical clash of colour. Givenchy’s urban gent pairs a steely gaze with all-white and cool opaque ensembles that smoothly mix tailoring with more casual elements. Elsewhere, Brioni steps up the game with traditional officewear, playing off subtle differences in texture and tone to create a more polished yet fashion-forward look.
The staple piece of any man’s wardrobe, the humble jacket can have transformative super powers when it comes to style. Simply look to the lover of all things extravagant, Tom Ford, for designs that stand out from the crowd. For a trendy alternative to the traditional tuxedo pairings, snap up printed dinner jackets that deliver plenty of impact. Other stand-out designs and opulent prints also graced the runways of Hugo Boss, Louis Vuitton and Gucci ensuring that, this season, there’s an art to covering up.

Boho Vibes
——
The king of magpie exoticism, Gucci’s Alessandro Michele led the procession of geek-chic eclecticism with stunning effect. As the show notes aptly described, the collection offered a ‘treasure chest of aesthetic references’. From sequins, lace and embroidery to glitter, ruff les and vintage bows, the only rule when pairing pieces and prints with such unabashed brazenness, is to wear them with confidence. Hot on the heels is Lanvin with designs that boast almost graffiti-like prints as well as pop art aesthetics of the maison’s heels, handbags and perfume bottles. Accessories here are key. So don’t be shy, brave those chandelier earrings, pile on statement necklaces and keep those lapels brooch laden.
Ushering in a new era of disco divas, the runways edged out the usual slinky sequined numbers in favour of a fearless new sheen. Designs, while dipped in a decadent dose of high shine fabrics and finishes, took on an unconventional relaxed silhouette. Among our favourites were the sassy pieces seen at Lanvin. Follow suit with gem toned sequined two-pieces and rough-around-edges evening dresses or layer up with a glitzy blazer for an androgynous after dark look. Edgy and modern, we’re loving the trend’s fresh take, as well as the new label directions, seen at Nina Ricci for Guillaume Henry’s second season – think sultry boudoir vibes – and Massimo Giorgetti’s debut at Emilio Pucci.
Peasant blouses, folksy frocks and gypsy-inspired skirts have long been a staple of the festival scene and this summer is no different. Sporting a more mature take, this season there are several big names that have this luxed up bohemian trend nailed. Etro in particular has caught our eye. Borrowing from the antique clothing aesthetic of Eastern Europe, luxurious silk robes and embroidered silk tulle dresses with tiered ruffles and flouncy layers are among the standout pieces, all perfectly paired with pretty satin ballerina slippers. Elsewhere, a tribal approach was spotted at Fendi and Valentino, especially. With the latter Italian label mixing in splash of tie-dye to elevate its Out of Africa theme.

This season the tough wearing utility favourite enjoys a new lease on life with this closet classic undergoing a chic makeover. Getting remarkably more dressed up over at Alexander McQueen and Alice & Olivia, discover hard-wearing denim laden with floral appliqués and intricate detailing then cheekily finished off with a flash of midriff. For those who prefer a more delicate approach, Chanel has us swooning over its bold indigo and pale blue-washed separates, the epitome of casual luxe, while Chloé opts for frayed hems and raw edges to reveal a seemingly undone look. Simply put, gone are the days of drainpipe denims, now is the time to slip into relaxed cuts, from highrise and flared to straight-legged and ankle-cropped.
Summer’s ubiquitous floral is hardly a style revolution, yet the sombre tone offered by this season’s moody blooms gives the seasonal print a fresh, sophisticated feel. Enticing us with not only the sheer choice of gorgeous floral prints but also the multiple guises in which designs were presented, think billowing maxi gowns, slouchy pyjama suits, midi prom dresses and tailored two-pieces, Dolce & Gabbana’s Riviera love affair comes up trumps. Embellished tiaras and flirty floral shades are also highly encouraged. For wistful femininity, we’re still pining over the dainty appliqué detailing at Alice & Olivia and Erdem’s fall-inspired watercolour prints, perfect for transitioning the trend into after dark.

If you want to see what the cities of the future will look like, head over to Masdar City in Abu Dhabi. This landmark development near the Abu Dhabi International Airport aims to be the world’s most sustainable eco-city and it’s already well on its way to delivering on that promise. Since breaking ground in 2008, Masdar City has proven to be a global model for sustainable urban development. The city combines ancient Arabic architectural techniques with modern technology to generate clean energy on-site. Here existing winds are captured and directed through winding walkways while rooftop solar technology and one of the largest photovoltaic installations in the region helps to convert the sun’s rays into energy. The focal point of the city is the Masdar Institute of Science and Technology, a research university dedicated to the fields of energy and sustainability, though there are a number of other attractions in the area. Visitors can spend the day exploring Masdar City using the on-demand Personal Rapid Transit system of automated electric-powered vehicles that can be individually operated using a touchscreen. Another popular sight is the Masdar Wind Tower that rises 45 metres above the open-air public square. A modern interpretation of the Arabic wind towers of the past, its height allows it to capture winds and effectively cool the square below. A number of retail outlets, cafés and restaurants are spread across the city. We recommend enjoying a meal at Osha Gourmet which is dedicated to authentic Emirati cuisine and stopping by the Eco Planet boutique to pick up a unique gift. A few thousand people live and work in Masdar City and there are plans for more businesses, restaurants and residential areas to open here over the coming years. Once complete, it’s expected that 40,000 people will live and work in this futuristic city. 7

H ISTORIC CRAFTS ——— Dhow building remains a time-honoured practice in the United Arab Emirates
39
the m a jestic sight of dhows cut ting across glit tering waterways such as Dubai Creek and the capital’s Mina Zayed Port is a welcome reminder of days gone By
Earlier in the year, the Bu Tinah dhow sailing race delighted thousands of visitors at Abu Dhabi’s Corniche where sights of these traditional boats gliding against the backdrop of towering skyscrapers presented a striking contrast between the country’s past and present. All eyes are now on the Al Gaffal Dhow Race, set to take place in Dubai this month where around 100 traditional boats, measuring 60 feet each, will compete in a prestigious race that was created in honour of pearl divers of the past who played a key role in the economic development of the country. Concierge goes behind the scenes to witness the craftsmanship of these majestic boats, reflecting centuries of skill and expertise handed down from father to son. When we visit the Jaddaf dhow-building yard in Dubai, a dedicated craftsman is already hard at
work, crouching beneath the great hull of a wooden ship, shaping and smoothing each plank until it takes on exactly the right form. No structured plans have been drawn: instead the dhow is realised through a combination of inherent skill and expert knowledge handed down through the generations. Slowly months of hard work and diligent attention to detail begin to pay off as the magnificent boat takes shape. Much of the endeavour is conducted with traditional tools and methods even today, meaning the entire exercise requires a great deal of patience and a steady hand. Finally, the dhow is ready to take to the waves, shaped by the many skilled artisans who have painstakingly hammered and honed every rivet and wooden plank into place. For most, the majestic sight of dhows cutting across glittering waterways such as Dubai Creek and
the capital’s Mina Zayed Port is a welcome reminder of days gone by and the deep-rooted traditions of the past that reaffirm the country’s long-lasting connection to the sea. Traditionally these wooden boats were relied upon to keep the bustling ports of Dubai and Abu Dhabi af loat as they serviced busy markets and facilitated the export and import of a wide range of produce. The boats not only carried local wares for sale across oceans to India, China and East Africa, they also returned to port laden with fish to eat. During the summer months, these versatile vessels also played a central role in the pearl diving trade which was at the time the mainstay of the country’s economy. The boats sailed out to the Gulf’s oyster banks where brave divers plunged into the waters to retrieve precious pearls.
P h o t o e s s ay / ex p er i en c e
While modern dhows are driven by engines instead of sails, the boats still feature the hull’s traditional shape and distinctive triangular sails. In another ode to the past, builders continue to forego complex drawings and plans and instead craft dhows using temporary pieces of wood that are eventually substituted with permanent wood.
41
The annual Al Gaffal Dhow Race takes place on May 23. The challenging course begins at the small uninhabited island of Sur Bu Na’air, 50 nautical miles west of the UAE, and ends in Dubai. The best way to experience this traditional sporting event is by hopping aboard ferry rides operated around Dubai Marina.
42
In an effort to protect the tr aditions of the past, dhow-building is still carried out in a m anner faithful to early techniques
These extraordinary boats, once the lifeblood of the nation, are still used today to ferry produce by a new generation of dhow builders. “I was raised by watching my father and grandfather working on dhows and it became part of my life. Dhows are still so important to trading in the UAE. When I was old enough, I started building dhows alongside my brother,” says local dhow builder Huraiz bin Touq. Materials for these grand vessels were originally imported from surrounding countries. Teak for the keel and masts was brought from India, rope came from Zanzibar and sail canvas was sourced from Bahrain and Kuwait. Nowadays wood comes from Malaysia, India or Pakistan while iron and pins are available in Dubai. Traditional tools of the dhowbuilding trade were simple aids, such as a hammer, saw, chisel and plane.
In an effort to protect the traditions of the past, dhow-building is still carried out in a manner faithful to early techniques. “You should have good experience in this industry. From five to seven years, depending on the size of the dhow. We do not work from drawings at all. Instead we start the dhow with temporary wood cuts and then substitute them with permanent wood pieces. This procedure works better because it gives you an idea of how the dhow will look rather than trying to imagine it from drawings. “We have around 20 workers in our dhowbuilding teams. One group works on cutting the wood, another on the design templates and the rest work on melting the iron to join with the wood,” says Huraiz who is currently working on a dhow he believes will be one of the UAE’s largest.
Modern dhows are now driven by engines instead of sails, but their heritage still shines through in the hull’s traditional shape and distinctive triangular sails called lateens. Dhows continue to ply regular trade routes to and from the UAE and take centre stage at a host of racing events held across the country each year. The skills of both dhow builders and sailors are showcased at prestigious competitions such as the Al Gaffal Dhow Race held in Dubai in May that sees hundreds of dhows participate. Just like his father and grandfather, Huraiz has dedicated his life to the art of dhow building. Many months of tireless toil pay off when the magnificent boats finally take to the waves and the satisfied builders look on with a sense of pride that is shared by the generations before them.

CARLOS GUEDES ——— The composer and associate music professor at NYU Abu Dhabi reveals the vibrancy of the capital’s music scene
These are exciting times to be living in Abu Dhabi. One can witness, almost in real time, the rapid development of a thriving multicultural society. I moved here two and a half years ago and since then I have been a privileged spectator as well as a modest contributor to this continuous change. An increase in highprofile musical performances has also been visible. When I first moved to the city, my friends asked me about the musical life here and I told them that there was a week or so when amazing artists come over for the Abu Dhabi Festival, a couple of concerts with leading rock and pop artists and, aside from that, bands playing covers in hotels, but that’s about it. Being a musician myself, it was a matter of particular concern to me, especially as I was to direct a music programme at New York University Abu Dhabi. I wondered how we could educate musicians without a live music and performance scene. Since then a lot has happened and, in parallel with the pace of the city’s urban development, one can witness increasing richness in Abu Dhabi’s musical life almost every day. Several initiatives have systematically contributed to today’s thriving scene. The return of Abu Dhabi Classics by the Abu Dhabi Tourism
& Culture Authority is one example. It celebrates classical music from around the world with widely renowned artists performing in the capital during an entire season. It also perfectly complements the recent Abu Dhabi Festival by Abu Dhabi Music & Arts Foundation that now spans an entire month. Meanwhile the opening of the NYU Abu Dhabi Arts Center brought an alternative stream of high-quality performances through my colleague Bill Bragin’s eclectic and visionary programming. In the past year alone, the emirate has hosted incredibly diverse musical events attracting a wide audience – a lot of which is more erudite and not as commercial as the mainstream concerts by famous rock artists. One of the important aspects of the recent increase in musical activity in the emirate is also the educational effort connected to this programming. Without exception, Abu Dhabi Festival, Abu Dhabi Classics and our own Arts Center provide important educational activities in connection with their performances. With a similar degree of importance are a growing number of seasonal or periodic musical events taking place across the city such as Rooftop Rhythms, an R&B and soul open mic night at the Saadiyat Beach Club,
IN THE PAST YEAR ALONE, THE EMIR ATE HAS HOSTED INCREDIBLY DIVERSE MUSICAL EVENTS that are contributing, as well expanding, Abu Dhabi’s musical life and promotion of young and local talent. The events hosted by NYU Abu Dhabi’s music programme provide yet another layer of activity that ranges from student recitals, concerts and interactive workshops, to other activities in collaboration with entities such as Chamber Music Abu Dhabi or the Arts Centre. This layer is perhaps the most important for further developing musical talent as it can effectively contribute to ensuring a new generation of musicians will flourish in the country armed with a truly eclectic and multifaceted approach to music making. In a short space of time Abu Dhabi has managed to transform its music scene. Not only is it now incredibly diverse and multilayered, but it is also fast approaching what one would expect from a vibrant multicultural capital that is at the very crossroads of the east and west.

JOIN THE CLUB ——— Armed Forces Officers Club & Hotel presents an array of culinary delights in the capital
The Armed Forces Officers Club & Hotel at Khor Al Maqta is a capital landmark in its own right and has long been a preferred venue for the community to stay, play and unwind in since opening in the early 1990s. The hotel boasts an instantly recognisable exterior while the club features five-star recreational facilities including an Olympic swimming pool and football fields, but the culinary offerings also stand out for its sheer variety and contemporary European flavours. At the helm is executive chef Karsten Gottschalk who trained and gained experience in both London and Germany before transferring to Abu Dhabi. “I was always very interested in cooking, especially after watching my mother prepare dishes at home. I remember when I was younger, I would often check what was cooking in the pots as my mother and grandmother prepared dinner and Sunday roasts. After my apprenticeship, great chefs in London further inspired my passion for cooking and, over the years I have trained myself to be more creative with food. To me, food is a way of expressing myself,” says Gottschalk. The many years spent in Abu Dhabi have also influenced Gottschalk’s culinary style, as he now masterfully uses exotic spices from the region and beyond to experiment with different flavours, creating remarkable dishes. “I now really enjoy cooking using lots of spices and with Arabic cuisine there are lots of opportunities to do this. I like the flavours of traditional local dishes as both the preparation involved and taste is really unique. I always recommend visitors try the delicious ouzi served with local biryani rice. It is a whole lamb that is marinated and cooked on the open wood fire in an authentic way. At the hotel, we use long grain biryani rice that is complemented by Indian spices and dried lemon before being garnished with raisins and nuts.
“Our ouzi is served every day in different styles at Al Bathna. This international, all-day buffet restaurant offers a wide range of cuisines including continental, Emirati, Arabic, Indian, Asian, American, Japanese and more. In fact there’s more than 150 different dishes presented in our buffets, while our seafood nights every Sunday evening and Friday family brunch here are also very popular with guests.” In the evenings, a visit to Armed Forces Officers Club & Hotel isn’t complete without enjoying a memorable dinner at Kennedy Restaurant. With its light and airy décor, pristine garden views and an intimate al fresco terrace, this elegant restaurant is a culinary gem. The menu features the best in European fare with local touches also evident thanks to Gottschalk’s expert touch. The restaurant’s signature dishes include contemporary favourites such as pan-seared foie gras, Guinean fowl breast, braised lamb shank with rosemary jus and grilled beef tenderloin on broccoli hash. The attention to detail is evident in every dish and the restaurant also presents degustation menus for those who would like to enjoy the chef’s recommendations. “Kennedy Restaurant has a Swiss, German and French twist. With a relaxing ambience, high standard of service and carefully selected beverages, Kennedy really is a one of a kind restaurant in Abu Dhabi,” says Gottschalk. From the sumptuous grills and Emirati specialities at Al Bathna to the laidback Tex-Mex cuisine at Taverna Restaurant, light bites at Leisure Lounge and contemporary fare at Kennedy Restaurant, the hotel presents an array of delectable choices that are worth savouring while in the capital. —— For more information or to book a table at any of the restaurants in Armed Forces Officers Club & Hotel, contact: 02 4975169

Think warm sunset hues and gilded ornate detailing that lend an elegant feel to the venue, while the menu easily tempts fans of Southeast Asian cuisine with an edit of classic dishes. After a medley of exotic Thai flavours there’s no better way to round off your meal than with a serving of mango sticky rice. Undoubtedly one of Thailand’s most popular desserts, chef de cuisine Yongyos Chimthe, explains: “We always try to showcase the most authentic culinary traditions of Thailand through our dishes. The mango sticky rice as a dish is rich in both taste and presentation style. It’s something everyone has to try.” Artfully presented, the generous mound of sweet sticky rice sits alongside refreshing slices of mango and a pot of creamy coconut milk. Heavenly.

—— One of the capital’s culinary highlights, Pearls by Michael Caines at Jumeirah at Etihad Towers showcases some of the finest dishes from the acclaimed British chef. Explaining the concept behind the restaurant that opened in the capital late last year, the celebrity chef reveals: “The ‘pearls’ refers to my signature dishes, the Michael Caines classics that I have developed and refined over two decades of cooking to a two-star Michelin standard. When we created Pearls, my aim was to devise a menu that is a celebration of the food and dishes that I have created over the years.” One such dish that’s certainly been causing a stir on the epicurean scene is Caines’ white chocolate candle. This striking looking dessert, crafted to resemble a melting candle, offers a sweet burst of rich white chocolate perfectly accompanied by a sprinkling of tart raspberries and a delicate rose infused mousse that gives this signature dessert a deliciously refreshing twist.

—— With it’s smattering of bright fixtures, funky lighting and quirky wall décor, Circo, which means circus in Italian, brings its carnival vibe to the capital. As you’d expect from a restaurant that exhibits such eclecticism across the board, the dessert offerings are equally as vibrant. Reflecting the “spirit and colour of Circo”, as chef Matteo Fontana puts it, the bright Tuscan raspberry semifreddo cake offers a burst of flavours with each mouthful as it combines a sweet, gooey heart of honey gelato with Italian meringue and fragrant vanilla sauce. Another great dish comes is Circo’s famed tiramisu sphere. With its scrumptious mix of quality coffee, creamy mascarpone cheese and a crunchy biscuit base encased in a dark chocolate shell, this contemporary update of the classic dessert is a must-try.

—— As is the intention of this cool venue in Le Royal Méridien Abu Dhabi, Market Kitchen’s funky urban vibe, blend of warm lighting and wooden furnishings brilliantly brings together its ‘hotel as a home’ concept. The menu runs the full gauntlet of flavours, from fresh fettuccine pasta to grilled New York strip steak. However, for those with a sweet tooth, you’ll be excused for struggling to avert your eyes from the tempting treats on offer. The salted caramel ice cream sundae, which the restaurant chef Grant Balinger refers to as “pure indulgence”, has big dollops of smooth ice cream on a bed of chocolate fudge sauce generously sprinkled with peanuts and salted caramel popcorn. Balinger’s favourite though is the caramelised banana cake. The dessert, which he fondly says takes him back to his youth, is perfectly paired with a scoop of rich hazelnut ice cream and crunchy praline.

Tucked away on the first f loor of Dalma Mall you’ll find Feathers Fashion, a high-end accessories boutique specialising in fine jewellery, wallets, pens and handbags. The brainchild of Emirati entrepreneur Khalid Basaeed, Feathers Fashion is the first ever homegrown luxury goods brand and it has taken the UAE shopping scene by storm. “The concept behind Feathers Fashion is to reflect the culture of the UAE. The heart of the brand is local, from the raw materials we use to the Arabian pattern designs. Our products make wonderful gifts and mementos, because you won’t find these pieces anywhere else in the world,” explains Basaeed. We love the camel leather wallets and funky watches here. Home décor enthusiasts will be in heaven at Mosaique, a high-end boutique at Nation Galleria. A labour of love is perhaps the best way to describe multi-brand boutique, LA Rags at Al Seef Village Mall on Salam Street. The California-inspired fashion store, which started life in the living room of part-time designer and personal shopper Salma Saad, was originally called Mirabelle Boutique, but was re-branded when the store moved premises and introduced menswear to its range. The boutique stocks everything from floaty maxi dresses to shoes, swimwear and accessories, and Saad travels far and wide to acquire her carefully curated selection. Contact: 02 6586512
MINBART
The first of its kind in Abu Dhabi, Minbart is a boutique and gallery at Al Raha Beach that acts as a creative platform for artists and designers to display their pieces. “There are lots of creative communities around and they were lacking a platform to showcase their work – hence the idea for Minbart was born,” says founder and owner, Sheikha Alia Al Qassimi. The boutique collaborates with a number of local, regional and international designers and now stocks an upbeat collection of fashion pieces, artworks and furniture items. Contact: 02 5522332

Located in the luxurious Park Hyatt Abu Dhabi Hotel and Villas on Saadiyat Island, the spa takes its aesthetical lead from the beauty of Arabia while treatments highlight the latest in innovation. The oxygen awakening facial is a clear example of this contemporary approach. As global jet setters will know, it doesn’t take long for the strain of constant travel to show on the skin’s appearance, making this treatment especially prevalent for frequent flyers. The facial decongests, oxygenates and reinvigorates the skin using delicate massage techniques alongside products that have been especially designed to promote the release of pure oxygen into the skin’s outer layer. The overall effect encourages cell renewal to create a lighter and brighter complexion leaving the face looking and feeling younger. Contact: 02 4071170
T H E H E AT I S O N LET IT SOAK IN
Set within the indulgent confines of Sofitel Abu Dhabi Corniche, So SPA offers several liquidbased therapies that hone in on the importance of keeping the body hydrated. Feel your worries ease away as you sink into an indulgent 45-minute milk bath. Infusing Shiffa products with aromatic rose extracts, the bath aids relaxation while leaving skin feeling ultra soft and nourished. The spa’s signature 90-minute Turkish bath also offers a great way to unwind. As soft steam envelops the body, a skilled therapist uses black soap to effectively exfoliate the body. Infused with shea butter, this rich antioxidant soap also treats skin problems and irritations before the session draws to a close with a fragrant massage. Contact: 02 8137777
As the name suggests, Zen the Spa at Al Ain Rotana seeks to bestow its visitors with a sense of serenity and relaxation while in the oasis city. Drawing on the expertise derived from holistic Asian philosophies, the spa’s signature hot stone massage uses expert movements and hot volcanic stones to ease deep-seated muscle tension. Warmth is often used to not only relieve chronic pain but also create a calming effect. While massage points can be tailored to treat each individual’s main areas of concern, the hot stones are positioned on precise acupressure points. As the muscles warm and relax, they become easier for the therapist to manipulate. Also home to a sauna, steam room, plunge pool and hammam area, Zen the Spa is the perfect place to while away the day. Contact: 02 5961100

HERITAGE VILLAGE Designed to resemble a traditional oasis village, this quaint attraction provides an interesting glimpse into the emirate’s past. There’s a Bedouin tent, reconstructions of original date-palm houses, an example of the ancient falaj irrigation system and a small spice shop selling dried herbs and other trinkets.

EMIRATES PALACE The iconic palace takes pride of place at the tip of the Abu Dhabi Corniche and embodies the luxury lifestyle the capital has cultivated. Until recently, the most expensive hotel ever to be built, the impressive structure is richly adorned with precious materials. Twelve different shades of marble can be spotted in the cavernous atrium, while the central dome holds dual records as both the largest in the world and the greatest gilded expanse ever created in one building.

ASK THE CONCIERGE
Abdulaziz Al Marri, chief concierge at Four Seasons Hotel Abu Dhabi at Al Maryah Island, reveals the best of the city
1
Our authentic culture and heritage complemented by a modern, innovative and continually developing landscape makes Abu Dhabi a truly iconic city for travellers. A traditional, family oriented city, the emirate is also home to beautiful scenery with more than 200 islands on the coastline. Born and raised in the UAE, I studied at Jumeirah Group’s Emirates Academy of Hospitality Management and am proud to be the only Emirati with Les Clef d’Or membership in the UAE. It’s a pleasure to be working in the capital at Four Seasons Hotel Abu Dhabi at Al Maryah Island as part of the opening team, bringing the renowned, international luxury brand and its service culture to the capital. Al Maryah Island, named after the Arabian oryx that once inhabited the island and its surrounding areas, offers the ultimate luxury lifestyle experience. It currently features highend residences and hotels, as well as premium shopping and dining in The Galleria on Al Maryah Island and a stunning waterfront

promenade. Home to Abu Dhabi Global Market (ADGM), the island is also Abu Dhabi’s new international financial centre. When visiting the emirate, stop by the iconic Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque that has been designed to unite the cultural diversity of the Islamic world, and reflects the historical and modern values of both architecture and art. As a thrill seeker and driving enthusiast, I highly recommend Ferrari World Abu Dhabi– the largest indoor theme park – and Yas Marina Circuit that hosts the annual Formula 1 Etihad Airways Abu Dhabi Grand Prix that takes place in November. Here you can also learn how to drive like a professional, drift, race or enjoy a range of passenger driving experiences. If you have the time, venture into the Abu Dhabi desert to explore the rolling sand dunes in a 4x4, or choose to take in the views on a camel ride. Head out at sunset or sunrise, when the weather is cooler. At Four Seasons Hotel Abu Dhabi at Al Maryah Island, we are committed to offering extraordinary guest experiences and can organise visits to historic areas and cultural attractions including local markets, Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque and Abu Dhabi Falcon Hospital. I really enjoy sharing my local heritage, anecdotes and stories with discerning guests. After a day out in the sunshine, I would encourage visitors to experience our ‘living room’ – Al Meylas, the hotel lobby lounge. It extends onto outdoor terraces with plenty of natural light, and overlooks the water, making it the perfect spot to relax and view Abu Dhabi’s glittering skyline. Here guests can also experience the finest Arabic hospitality complete with a warm welcome, premium teas and coffee and inspired Middle Eastern cuisine. 3
