Abu Dhabi never ceases to amaze. The city is still growing and I believe what we are witnessing now is just the beginning of an amazing tourist destination. Where else in the world can you find a natural island with such beautiful buildings and monuments? Amazing towers are found all over the city. To appreciate the sparkle of the UAE capital at night, the revolving restaurant and bar, Stratos, at Le Royal Meridien Abu Dhabi offers remarkable 360-degree views. Some of the most popular cultural attractions here include the magnificent Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque that also houses the largest man-made Iranian carpet. The Heritage Village by the Corniche is also a wonderful destination to learn all about the history of Abu Dhabi, the royal family and how the UAE blossomed into the country that it is now. Qasr Al Hosn (Al Hosn Palace) is the oldest site in Abu Dhabi, built in 1793, and was the original residence of the ruling family. Now it has been renovated to a cultural site where Abu Dhabi Festival takes place, showcasing the country’s rich history. Further away from the city centre, Liwa Oasis offers a quick escape with natural desert beauty and is known for date farming. The Abu Dhabi Women’s Craft Centre in Al Mushrif is the best place to find traditional handmade crafts and gifts that make ideal souvenirs, while The Galleria on Al Maryah Island offers a wide selection of high-end fashion and jewellery brands. For a special dinner, Olive Restaurant at Zaya Nurai Island Resort is perfect. The journey there is romantic in itself as visitors take a short boat ride to the new Nurai Island from Saadiyat Island. The ocean views from the restaurant are breathtaking and the food is simply exquisite as well. The St. Regis Abu Dhabi’s Nation Riviera Beach Club is ideal to watch the sunset with views of the Corniche and city skyline.

D I S C OV E R Islamic customs

Prayer is one of the five pillars of Islam and must be performed five times a day by practising Muslims. During the holy month of Ramadan the schedule remains the same although the evening prayer is longer as additional passages of the Qur’an are recited. Muslims are required to be clean when handling the Qur’an so before each prayer they must perform a bathing process known as ablution or Wudu. All mosques are equipped with facilities for this procedure such as this beautiful ablution area at the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque in Abu Dhabi. Visit: szgmc.ae

saadiyat cultural district

Abu Dhabi’s location in the Gulf makes it the perfect meeting point between East and West. The mix of nationalities residing here brings the best cuisine, fashion and architecture from across the globe to the city. The development of Saadiyat Cultural District extends this reach to the art world. Situated on Saadiyat Island and pioneered by Abu Dhabi Tourism and Culture Authority (TCA Abu Dhabi), the district will house the world’s largest single concentration of premier cultural assets in one area. International museums Louvre from Paris and Guggenheim from New York are in the process of building extensions in the capital that will sit alongside local developments Zayed National Museum and Manarat Al Saadiyat. Concierge explores the projects that are set to elevate Abu Dhabi’s profile as an international arts destination.

Guggenheim Abu Dhabi The Guggenheim in New York is a key hub in the global art world, boasting vast collections of modern, contemporary, impressionist and post-impressionist artwork. Its forthcoming sister museum in Abu Dhabi, estimated for completion in 2017, is set to bring this concept to the UAE and revolutionise the emirate’s art scene. “The museum’s transcultural narrative theme examines the cross-currents among worldly concepts, where each gallery will tell a distinct notion that came to focus with the passage of time across places and cultures,”

1 Artist’s impression of Guggenheim Abu Dhabi 2 & 3 Seeing Through Light exhibition at Guggenheim Abu Dhabi

explains Maisa Al Qassimi, programmes manager, Museums Department for the Culture Sector of TCA Abu Dhabi. The museum’s story will start in the 1960s, universally acknowledged as an age of significant political, social and cultural change worldwide. Contemporary art from the past six decades will then be brought to the capital from around the world and displayed in themed exhibitions. In doing so, organisers hope to strengthen the understanding and awareness of modern art and its history, and, in turn, further enrich the UAE’s cultural landscape.

2

The Abu Dhabi development is Guggenheim’s first museum in the region, adding to a portfolio that spans New York, Venice and Bilbao, Spain. While the museum’s international reach will be ev ident t hroughout many collections, Guggenheim Abu Dhabi will also make the most of its Gulf location and the region’s distinctive arts and cultural scene. Al Qassimi adds: “While geographic plurality underlies the very ethos of the Guggenheim Abu Dhabi collection, there is a dedicated focus within it on artists from and working in the Middle East. This makes it more opportune to presenting a prominent and truly special platform of modern and contemporary art derived from the art movements that occurred regionally, as well as those that worked as an influence and influencers of the region’s cultural, communal and political movements, from the 1960s to this day.” 3

Louvre Abu Dhabi Musée du Louvre in Paris is one of the world’s most visited museums, revered in the art world for its expansive range of artworks covering several centuries. Thanks to a special collaboration between the governments of France and the UAE, Abu Dhabi will be the home of a second Louvre venue, based at Saadiyat Cultural District. Louvre Abu Dhabi will be the first universal museum in the region and will house diverse collections of works spanning from pre-historic to contemporary art. “What distinguishes Louvre Abu Dhabi is the inherent idea of presenting art history in a way that has not been presented before. Major universal museums tend to group collections based on their geographic origins or sometimes specific themes. At Louvre Abu Dhabi, the concept of universalism is highlighted through the choice of displays

with which the links of these civilisations are influenced. I think that by placing the objects chronologically and displaying artworks from different civilisations side by side, it allows the visitor to draw a visual link between the objects and understand the differences and similarities in the aesthetics and ideas of these objects,” explains Alia Lootah, a researcher from the curatorial department at Louvre Abu Dhabi. Scheduled to open in December this year, the museum is set to boost the city’s cultural outreach. It will have a strong educational aspect where future generations can be exposed to artistic masterpieces from all over the world. It will also become a cultural centre where researchers can exchange ideas and access academic and visual resources. “Louvre Abu Dhabi will have a very important impact on the cultural landscape, not only for the country, but for the Gulf and the Arab world, and also for the world in general,” says Lootah. the most influential men in the world and is widely regarded as the ‘Father of the UAE’. The Zayed National Museum tells his story and the history of the emirates that he united. Visitors will be able to explore a series of permanent and short-term exhibitions, witness cultural performances and take part in interactive workshops and activities. The building’s architecture is a work of art in itself. Designed to reflect the Sheikh’s love of falconry, the roof is made up of several steel ‘feathers’, the tallest rising 125 metres. Enclosed under each feather will be a gallery space, while the cluster will be surrounded by water and lush gardens landscaped out of the desert. The space, which is scheduled to open in 2016, creates the perfect juxtaposition between the past, present and future of the emirates. For more information , visit: zayednationalmuseum.ae

Manarat Al Saadiyat Translated to ‘the place of enlightenment’, Manarat Al Saadiyat was designed to bring the Saadiyat story to life. The first artistic venue to open on Saadiyat Island, it features a modern arts and culture centre, four gallery spaces and a theatre. A highlight is the Saadiyat Experience, an interactive exhibit about Saadiyat’s history and culture in which visitors can explore the island’s past and future through a series of multimedia platforms. The galleries hold space for exhibitions and educational programmes organised by TDIC (Tourism Development & Investment Company), which has created an ongoing programme dedicated to promoting awareness of art and culture. Tradition, with a twist

‘The Souk at Qaryat Al Beri’ is a unique venue and the first of its kind in Abu Dhabi. Built on two levels, The Souk is an interesting fusion of Arabian architecture with a Venetian theme, which together reflects traditional Arab hospitality. Water canals meander through The Souk and nearby properties with abra boats ferrying hotel guests from the Shangri-La Hotel to various locations. Several restaurants and coffee shops have alfresco dining terraces that overlook the waters and afford a view of the picturesque landscape.

Building a legacy Abu Dhabi boasts an array of worldclass modern architectural marvels

It’s hard to believe that not long ago, the United Arab Emirates was a sparse desert inhabited by Bedouin tribes. For miles around, there were few fishing villages and date farms, and the skyline of Abu Dhabi consisted of no more than a few hundred palm barasti huts, some basic coral buildings and the Ruler’s Fort just before the turn of the 20th century. Today, the emirate boasts some of the finest examples of modern architecture in the world, from the stunning Sheikh Zayed Bridge and Capital Gate building to the new Louvre Abu Dhabi museum taking shape at Saadiyat Island. Boasting lofty ambitions and some of the most avant-garde designs of our time, Concierge takes a closer look at some of Abu Dhabi’s most iconic buildings.

National Exhibition Centre (ADNEC), Capital Gate stands out in the city’s skyline with its unique design. Known affectionately as the leaning tower of Abu Dhabi, it features an 18-degree westward lean, which won it the title of “world’s furthest leaning man-made tower” from The Guinness Book of Records. One of the other striking elements of the

the city’s binding ties with the sea and desert with a wave-like effect. The building is the address of the city’s first Hyatt hotel, Hyatt Capital Gate Abu Dhabi. Anyone who’s driven into Abu Dhabi from Dubai will have noticed the gleaming disclike building in Al Raha. Aldar Properties’ new headquarters is the first spherical building in the Middle East, standing at approximately 110 metres in height with 23 floor levels. The structural design has been the subject of much admiration, consisting of a central concrete core, with support columns forming the building’s envelope. For its architect Marwan Zgheib from MZ Architects, the power of the monument lies in its simplicity. Inspired by the clam shell which links back to Abu Dhabi’s seafaring heritage, as well as the symbolism of the geometric

Natural inspirations The theme of linking back to the emirate’s desert and seafaring heritage and landscapes is consistent with a number of projects in the capital, including the Sheikh Zayed Bridge that has become one of Abu Dhabi’s landmarks. Inspired by the shapes of sand dunes in the desert, highly-acclaimed architect Zaha Hadid created a triplearched bridge where the main bridge arch structure rises to a height of 60 metres above water level. As the steel arches rise and spring from concrete piers asymmetrically, the overall sinusoidal waveform provides an iconic structural silhouette shape.

The theme of linking back to the emirate’s desert and seafaring heritage and landscapes is consistent with a number of projects in the capital, including the Sheikh Zayed Bridge

Yas Viceroy Abu Dhabi hotel is another project that looks to the region’s topography as a design reference. “The building’s architectural qualities speak to the land and sea scapes of the city and to the mathematical aspects of the arabesque and the elegance and magic of Islamic and indigenous architecture in the region. As far as a building for the 21st century goes, the vision was also to evoke technological speed with Formula 1 and yachts, as well nature’s quiet and omnipresent power,” explains Hani Rashid, architect at Asymptote Architecture.

Looking back It’s no surprise that Islamic-inspired design and Arabesque patterns are prominent in the UAE as it’s an Islamic country, but the emirate of Abu Dhabi reinterprets history with a more contemporary approach. For

example, for the Emirates Palace hotel on the Corniche,Wimberly Allison Tong & Goo (WATG) envisioned the project as a majestic palace rising from the sand, but it remained important to instil a sense of place. Here, modern opulence blends with traditional patterns on the façade design which became a reality thanks to the techniques of etching and casting. Another great example is the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque. It boasts a brilliant white exterior, crafted from the finest marble from Macedonia, and features a blend of Mamluk, Ottoman and Fatimid styles. The design of the minarets is also a wonderful sight to behold, as is the fusion of artistic glasswork and mosaic displaying Islamic designs of symmetry and repetition. Qasr Al Hosn is the oldest stone building in the city and began life in the 1760s as a watchtower. Today, the historic monument hosts regular heritage festivals and is currently undergoing a restoration project that aims to showcase its traditional design and architecture. Once work is completed, original bricks of the structure will be restored along with the historic ‘Barjeel’ ventilation system, an ancient form of air conditioning where air is directed into the interior rooms of the building with the help of recessed arches.

Sustainability in focus Over the last couple of decades, the UAE capital has placed a primary focus on the issue of sustainability, which is also part of the Abu Dhabi 2030 economic plan. In fact, all new buildings in the emirate have to abide by the Estidama design methodology of construction to put sustainability into practice. “Abu Dhabi’s architecture scene is no doubt maturing as the city is now benefitting from some of the joined-up thinking initiated by the leadership and implemented by the Urban Planning Council as part of the 2030 Vision. Key master plans such as Saadiyat, Yas and Reem Islands are all gathering pace as the emirate seeks to realise lofty ambitions,” explains Richard Fenne, senior associate at Woods Bagot. “In terms of developments, Masdar City is setting the blueprint for sustainable cities, not just regionally, but also globally. Woods Bagot were privileged to contribute to the Masdar story with the recent completion of the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) headquarters, an exemplar building that was awarded the highest Estidama Pearl Rating (4) issued to date for a commercial building,” says Fenne. The IRENA building is fitted with 1,000 square-metres of rooftop photo-voltaic solar

panels for renewable energy along with key systems in place to help reduce water usage by more than 50 percent when compared to a typical building in Abu Dhabi. For a large part of the year and especially during summer, it can be uncomfortable to remain outside for prolonged periods unless in an air-conditioned environment. This poses a challenge to both architects and building designers in the emirate, but careful design of external spaces can greatly improve conditions as evident in the first residential development at Masdar City in Abu Dhabi. The development features plenty of shade, clever use of light and the ability to channel wind effectively. “We’ve noticed there is a greater importance placed on the way that buildings engage with the public realm these days, with a view to creating both attractive and liveable communities,” explains Fenne. After the success of Cityscape Abu Dhabi 2015 last month, the emirate is once again at an exciting phase of development with bold projects and great enthusiasm for the future.

Abu Dhabi Classics has been delighting classical music aficionados across the UAE. The international concert series, hosting its season finale this month, has been praised for its line-up of artists that have held exciting and compelling performances based around this season’s theme of the traveller. From the opening night on October 14 last year which featured French pianist Lydie Solomon at Manarat Al Saadiyat, through to Jordi Savall’s world premiere of a concert dedicated to the famous Islamic traveller Ibn Battuta in November, Abu Dhabi Classics concerts have played to record audiences at venues across the city and helped spur cultural dialogue, highlighting the harmony that exists between music from both the east and west. One of the season’s key highlights takes place this month when the new Abu Dhabi Classics Music Awards by the Abu Dhabi Tourism & Culture Authority (TCA) will be presented to leading international talent for the first time in the event’s history. The grand awards ceremony, on May 12, is followed by a solo piano concert by French pianist Bertrand Chamayou at Manarat Al Saadiyat Auditorium on May 27, titled Global Encounters. The Abu Dhabi Classics 2014/15 season will close with another rousing performance by Chamayou in Al Ain at Al Qattara Arts Centre on May 28.

Diamond in the Gulf For over a century, Damas has experienced phenomenal growth from its origins as a humble workshop to an empire for high-end jewellery Words by

Zeina Eid

Under large wooden panels protecting pedestrians from the sun’s rays, runs a maze of narrow streets lined with a series of small shops where the windows seem to overf low with precious gems. Here, in the heart of Dubai’s historical gold souk,‬ visitors soon discover why the UAE is renowned for gold as they embark on a journey back in time. Back in the 1940s, a series of free trade policies attracted entrepreneurs from neighbouring Iran and India to come and set up shop on the banks of the creek. This is where the story of Damas begins, as CEO Anan Fakhreddine recalls: “Damas was established in 1907 as a humble family workshop for the manufacture of silver jewellery, before moving on to gold. From the start, Damas was known for exceptional craftsmanship as the skills where passed through the family from one generation to the next.” Twenty years after opening its first store in the gold souk in 1959,‬ Damas has become one of the biggest jewellery brands in the entire region − its network spanning 300 stores throughout the Gulf, across Qatar, Oman, Bahrain, Kuwait and Saudi Arabia. Despite its phenomenal growth, though, the UAE remains an important market for the brand. “This is our home and the birthplace of Damas,” says Fakhreddine. “The UAE has always been a regional hub for the gold trade and, in the last few years, it has strengthened its position as an international hub for jewellery, gold and diamonds, as the world’s biggest brands continue to set up regional headquarters in the country. This is largely thanks to factors such as economic stability, a sophisticated infrastructure and the availability of shipping and insurance services.”

31

“Today, the amount of re-exported gold and diamonds from Dubai to Europe and the Far East is valued at tens of billions of dollars, which is a huge percentage of the overall size of the world industry. Gold prices in the UAE are very competitive compared to the rest of the world and when customers visit one of our stores, they can enjoy all these unique benefits.” Already a major gold trade hub in the region, the UAE has also developed into a global retail destination in the last two decades. “In the 1980s, it was hard to convince foreign brands to set up shop in the Gulf, as European markets thrived in the absence of major regional fashion capitals. Back then, the Gulf region didn’t have as many malls and, when Damas managed to start a partnership with its first foreign jewellery brand, it was considered a real feat,” says Fakhreddine. “By inaugurating its Al Ghurair Mall store in the 1990s, Damas was the first local jewellery brand to have the courage to move out of the traditional setting of the gold souk, enter the modern mall and compete with global retail brands.” After this initial leap of faith, it continued to expand its network across many of the major malls, attracting some of the biggest international brands.

From the launch of its first collection in 1988, Damas’ own brand portfolio has continued to grow over the past 10 years, numbering more than 10 popular brands today

Indeed, Damas’ brand portfolio includes some of the most prestigious jewellery houses, from Graff, whose diamond tiaras have crowned kings and princes worldwide, to Fabergé’s exquisite egg-shaped masterpieces and Roberto Coin whose designs are coveted by Hollywood’s biggest stars. Despite this impressive collection of foreign brands, Damas has made a name for itself creating hugely successful collections that have captured the essence of the UAE. From the launch of its first collection in 1988, Damas’ own brand portfolio has continued to grow over the past 10 years, numbering more than 10 popular brands today. Three years ago, Onesixeight was unveiled as an affordable diamond jewellery brand, while Orana’s stunning designs combined diamonds and high-quality South Sea pearls. More recently, Solana’s range of beautiful

yellow diamond gems, designed to be worn every day, was met with equal enthusiasm. “The secret to Damas’ success was that it understood the nature of local society and the cultural importance of buying jewellery,” explains Fakhreddine. “It was present at every occasion, from engagement parties to weddings, graduation ceremonies or new births, until it formed an integral part of the city’s celebrations and of its social tapestry. “Customers come to Damas looking for modern, unusual designs. Indeed, innovation is a key characteristic of the brand and we always make sure we stay abreast of the latest design trends, and adopt the most advanced techniques and manufacturing methods. In fact, the new product development unit constitutes one of the most important aspects of the business. Its eight experts are working

around the clock, watching the latest world news in the design sphere from displays at international exhibitions to releases by major design companies.” Keeping track of all the latest trends, Damas has noticed a tremendous change in customers’ needs and expectations, as Fakhreddine reveals: “The pace of change in the youth segment is phenomenal compared to traditional jewellery, which evolves at a much slower rate. This means we have to launch new collections every three weeks in that category, as opposed to every few months in the conservative segment. “One of the main trends we’ve noticed in 2015 is that, away from typical Arabinf luenced, single-coloured diamond necklaces, the country’s nature as a melting pot has inspired a brand new generation of jewellery aficionados who share a similar modern taste, regardless of their nationality and cultural background. Women today prefer multi-coloured gold jewellery that is

studded with unusual shades of diamonds such as blue, brown or pink.” As well as a keen unmistakable eye for design in the industry, unmatched quality is the second most important factor in Damas’ success, as testified by the establishment of the diamond division in 1995. Fakhreddine explains: “Damas has earned its customers’ trust, thanks to the quality of the raw materials it selects. An army of experts exerts every possible effort behind

the scenes to make sure that clients obtain the highest possible value for their investment. Here, each piece of gold, every diamond and gemstone, either supplied by international brands or by our own factories, is closely scrutinised to guarantee utmost clarity. Damas is proud of these high standards which are superior to not only many others in the market but even to the UAE’s legal requirements, which are considered among the most stringent in the world.” With the aim of strengthening its position as a market leader, Damas announced a development strategy in 2013 with a key focus on high-end jewellery. Fakhreddine says: “This reorientation is much more than just a catchy slogan. It constitutes a deep philosophy that ref lects in every aspect of our business. We have worked for months to establish clear and unified working guidelines and to redefine the company’s identity, from the design of our stores, to packaging, customer service and product quality. We have also re-examined the array of brands available in each branch to make sure we cover all consumer segments. All of these efforts are aimed at providing clients with the best possible experience in each and every one of our stores.”

Sunshine style Fashion trends and designer recommendations for the season

Who can forget the bold and daring designs that ruled the runways during spring/summer 2015 shows and heralded a dramatic season of change. Reviving the classics, Gucci celebrated the glorious 70s era with A-line skirts and shirt dresses, while ChloÊ turned up the feminine charm with lace dresses and flowing fabrics and Burberry Prorsum presented an explosion of colour and bold patterns. There have been several highlights on the runways but the focus is now back on the season’s most significant looks from designer retro pieces to monochrome patterning. Concierge reveals key trends that reflect the right sartorial statement this summer.

High fashion takes a trip back in time with a renewed love affair with the 60s and 70s. From Emilio Pucci’s paisley prints to Gucci’s oversized glasses and Louis Vuitton’s white woven dresses, the emphasis this summer is all about reinterpreting classic styles. Elham Chegini, head buyer at House of Fraser, recommends investing in a few pieces with botanical prints in dramatic tones of red, orange, yellow and green. The designer department store at The Mall at World Trade Centre has introduced a new shop-in-shop concept called Runway, presenting a curated edit of designer collections that is also worth a look. The classic trend is also evident in key accessories. “Designers are re-inventing classic accessories in new colours and other interpretations. When it comes to jewellery this season, they make a statement, particularly in gold,” says Ismail Al Fahim, group commercial manager and member of the board of directors from Paris Gallery. Italian jewellery brand Rebecca has a new Sahara collection that works well when paired with elegant summer dresses.

True romance Soft, sultry numbers are commonplace among spring/summer collections and catwalks were awash with dreamy designs. Playing with texture and transparency, white lace and broderie anglaise reigned at many a runway, including Valentino and Chloé. While French fashion house Chloé took the folksy route with almost vintage-like white guipure lace frocks, Valentino ushered in 18th century artisanal touches with beautiful white

Designers then turned to the ballet for inspiration, namely Giorgio Armani and Alberta Ferretti who chose to experiment with an ethereal palette of dusty pinks, sumptuous tulle and chiffon. Browse the latest collections at The Galleria at Al Maryah Island, including sheer designs in seductive noir from Bottega Venetta, Dolce & Gabbana and Michael Kors who all offer alluring alternatives to the classic LBD.

Denim dreams

Throw caution to the wind and replace floaty fabrics with spring/summer 2015’s flood of tenacious textures. This season, the fashion world has fallen in love with denim, leather and suede in new and wonderfully imaginative ways. Leading the charge with a host of masterful indigo renderings on the runway, Burberry Prorsum caught the eye of the front row with cropped patchwork denim designs and jean jackets with sheepskin fringing. Gucci, on the other hand, tapped into the military trend with absolute ease offering a line-up of easy-to-wear denim and suede pieces. Liu Jo has an elegant range of denim available at its store in The Galleria, while s*uce at Marina Mall presents a selection of soft and versatile styles. “Our favourite has to be our first capsule denim collection by s*uce, which is called This is Denim and consists of tops, kaftans and 70s-inspired button-down skirts and dresses, featuring beautiful intricate floral embroidery,” says buyer Ruler Saleh.

This summer, monochrome acted as the perfect canvas for some of the season’s hottest trends and made a splash on the runways in a variety of different styles from fierce to romantic. For example, the bold black and white spots exhibited a touch of punk flair at Marc by Marc Jacobs while Dolce & Gabbana kept it flirty with pretty polka dots splashed across svelte dresses and stunning ruffled senorita skirts. Autumn’s ubiquitous penchant for plaid gave way to a lovely daintier check this time around. While gingham was seen

in several bright summer shades, the sassy 1960’s checks at Diane von Furstenberg as well as Oscar de la Renta also offered irresistible versatility. “White is no doubt a big trend for the summer. From comfortable white trainers to vibrant white skirts and gorgeous lace summer dresses, white is the shade to wear this season. At s*uce, we are loving the monochrome juxtaposition of white lace on stripes as seen on Sacai,” explains Ruler Saleh, buyer at s*uce.

Sense of Arabia The traditions of the Ottoman Empire still live on today in Abu Dhabi’s five-star spas with luxury hammams

All through the Ottoman Empire’s historic reign, steam baths or hammams played an essential role in society. Not only did the ritual have a strong link to the Islamic faith, which requires both spiritual and physical cleanliness, but hammams were also a place for social gatherings where the community would come together to bathe in these grand settings, complete with elaborate décor, stunning dome ceilings and generous use of marble. The popularity of hammams has not faded over time and today Abu Dhabi boasts more than a few high-end spas that offer luxury hammam experiences. Visitors are welcomed to these specially heated sanctuaries where they lie on marble slabs as a trained specialist begins to thoroughly cleanse and scrub skin in rhythmic strokes, akin to a regular massage. Concierge speaks to the city’s experts to find out more about the benefits of hammams.

ESPA at The Ritz-Carton Abu Dhabi, Grand Canal With a secret beach reserved exclusively for spa guests and a host of signature therapies, ESPA at The Ritz-Cartlon Abu Dhabi, Grand Canal offers a tranquil escape from the bustle of the city. The Indulgence Hammam is a true highlight that involves a deep cleanse of the skin, followed by a body scrub, foam massage and marine mud body mask that detoxifies, tones and firms the skin. The popular ritual also includes a nourishing

ESPA Pink Hair Mask that leaves hair feeling soft, as well as a relaxing scalp massage. “Hammams are still very much a place to socialise with most spas offering facilities to accommodate groups of up to five guests in their relaxation areas,” says spa director Paris Kounoudis, adding: “Of all the treatments to relieve stress, the Moroccan hammam is one of the oldest and most effective. Anantara Spa A true wellbeing haven, Anantara Spa is one of the finest in the city. One of the spa’s signature treatments is the Royal Ottoman Hammam that involves a therapeutic kessa mitt body scrub – a traditional foam massage using 100 percent pure olive oil soap, a pressure-point head massage as well as hair conditioning and even a nourishing royal honey mask. “Anantara Spa at Eastern Mangroves is the only property currently in Abu Dhabi to offer the authentic Turkish hammam in the splendour of a real Roman-style bath house. Our therapists have been trained by a Turkish hammam specialist,” explains spa manager Daniella Swanepoel. The ritual affords a host of health benefits, according to Swanepoel. The heat from the steam and sauna rids the body of impurities, while the scrub removes dead skin, increases circulation and improves skin complexion. So SPA Blending local Shiffa products with the finest in French beauty, So SPA is a gem in Abu Dhabi and is a popular choice for hammam rituals. The spa’s Traditional Hammam Ritual is inspired by an authentic Moroccan hammam and makes use of scented black olive soap, though there are more indulgent options to choose from, including the Royal Gold and Diamond hammam. “Hammams, as a whole, are very natural treatments and also very efficient. Aside from boosting skin health, they can also relieve muscle pain after a strenuous workout. The whole process is extremely invigorating,” explains assistant spa manager Myriam Tesson. “While some people claim to go each week, we usually recommend visitors have a hammam treatment only once a month because the skin renews itself every three or four weeks. It also depends on skin types – European skin, for example, can be more fragile and sensitive.” Where: Sofitel Abu Dhabi Corniche, Corniche Road East, Capital Plaza Complex / Contact: 02 8137777

Emirates Palace Spa Offering one of the most indulgent settings for a hammam experience, Emirates Palace Spa boasts treatments that stand out in the capital for their added precious ingredients. “We use two fantastic product ranges for our hammam treatments. Charme d’Orient for our Traditional Moroccan Hammam incorporates ingredients from the Atlas Mountains of Morocco but the more luxurious offering from Amra uses precious ingredients. It features five ranges dedicated to elements: gold, diamond, platinum, pearls and caviar. An additional Precious line features all five elements together in a signature range,” explains spa director, Hannah Dowd. Hammams are gaining popularity in the capital for offering a wonderful cleanse, with benefits for both the inside and out. “It really is one of the best experiences for your whole body,” adds Dowd. Artistic endeavour Abu Dhabi Art Hub’s residency programme gives artists from around the world the opportunity to capture the UAE in a unique light WORDS BY

In the capital’s Musaffah industrial area, surrounded by warehouses and building sites, is a distinctive white and orange building that looks a bit out of place. While it may be hard to believe, this structure is home to some of the world’s greatest artistic talents. Above the art galleries, hidden behind a printing studio, visitors will find a row of six wooden doors with names pinned to them. Behind them are the private temporary homes and workspaces of artists on monthly residency programmes. These programmes are popular because it enables artists to get outside of their comfort zone and fully immerse themselves in a fresh area of inspiration without the distractions of everyday life. While there are many such opportunities available across Europe and America, they are quite rare in the Middle East. Abu Dhabi Art Hub is the only venue in the UAE that hosts a residency programme throughout most of the year. Each month, artists from a different country are invited to explore the capital and capture their perceptions of the vibrant emirate. Concierge visits during the recent Latvian Art Month to find out more about the initiative as well as the artists in residence.

Giving nothing away, the simple sign says Ritums Ivanovs. No description, no extravagance, just black text on white paper. Behind the door lies a bright living space with turquoise walls, an unused kitchen and ‘creative’ chaos. Papers lie scattered across all surfaces, a painting of a smiling man sits atop a sofa and suitcases peek out from every corner. Through a second door, the white walls of a sun-washed studio are covered with completed and in-progress paintings. At the back, two desks are covered with open paints, used brushes, sketches and photographs. Ivanovs, a Latvian artist with a proficiency for capturing human faces, is preparing for an exhibition of his work called Sungazing,

which explains the creative disarray in his room. The previous week he and five other artists from Latvia spent a few days exploring the city, absorbing a vast orientation of all walks of life and landscapes. Ivanovs found particular solace in the desert. “One early morning we went to the desert as the sun was coming up and I saw all these colours in the faces,” he says. “It was totally different to what I’ve seen before so I started making photos of people and how they looked into the sun. In a way, that defined my concept – the colours, people’s emotions and a close up of the face. I usually work with cooler tones but here is a different contrast and colour range, so that’s the core of my work.”

No idea is too innovative and the Art Hub provides all the materials, canvases, paints and tools required. Nigerian artist Collins Abinor, for example, fused striking sculptures of Bedouin faces and falcons from hundreds of metal spoons during his residency for Africa Art Month. For Latvia Art Month, most inspiration seemed to come from the local landscape. Sandra Krastina, a Latvian painter famed for her use of textures, took more than just inspiration from the desert; she took the sand. Mixing it with glue and acrylic paint and leaving it to dry, sand turns into stone, and Krastina used this process to add depth

to her paintings. Pointing to a striking image of a woman holding up a camera she explains: “That’s a visitor taking a photo, trying to catch a moment to remember. I drew this woman in blue because, for me, the desert is like a sea. It’s huge and changes all the time. All we can do is look at it. We can’t keep it and it has its own life. The dunes are like moving waves. In photos I never saw this, I always thought they were like mountains, like sculptures. I try to catch this sense of movement in my paintings.” Most visiting artists have never been to the Middle East before so the residence gives them a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to open their eyes to the realities of life in the region, be it the rolling dunes or the people that inhabit the emirates. Reinis Hofmanis, a photographer with a speciality for documentar y photography, found enjoyment in capturing everyday life in

5

4

the capital by taking a person or item from the background and bringing it to the fore. While many visitors take photographs of Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, Hofmanis approached it from an alternative angle, capturing a security guard sat on a bench with the magnificent building behind him. He also documented high rise buildings in the distance with cement building blocks in front of them to resemble the constant construction happening in the city, and a rich man enjoying a feast while his footman

6

stands to attention just metres away. In another project, he photographed Emiratis in national dress on a white background to showcase all the details of the clothing. Hofmanis says: “In most European countr ies, ever y t hing is built up and there’s a huge history there. Here, the history is happening right now, and it’s pretty impressive for me. What I like about documentary photography is that after a few years it’s going to be like real evidence of this time, and I feel that this is very important.” As a photographer who depends on scenes and people for his craft, Hofmanis found the residency at Abu Dhabi Art Hub useful in a number of ways. “The best thing is during this time you are very focused. In my country I can’t live just like an artist. I do commercial work and portrait photography for magazines, so I’m divided. But here you can focus only on your artwork,” Hofmanis says. “With photography I’m always exploring, I’m not sitting in a studio. I’m meeting people and talking to people. People here are very open minded in comparison with people in places like Germany and France.” While some artists, like Hofmanis, take time to delve into local culture, others are inspired by their first impressions. Andris Vitolins, who focuses on “the materialised fruit of human fantasy” by painting objects and buildings, was captivated by Abu Dhabi’s architecture. Referencing a painting of a skyscraper that appears to be floating in

the sky, he says: “That’s the feeling here because when you’re travelling the first impression is that it’s a desert and houses are falling from the cosmos, from space.” “I come from a place where 60 per cent is covered with forest, so being here is a new experience for me. I decided to concentrate on Arabic houses and Middle Eastern architecture. My first idea was to use real buildings, but then I decided to destroy them and make them more abstract as a symbol. I think it’s much more interesting this way.” Another artist, Vineta Kaulaca, followed a similar route but in a unique way. Inspired by the paradox that Abu Dhabi is a city built from the sand, Kaulaca created colourful oil paintings arranged to create a beautiful juxtaposition between architecture and the desert. “The diversity of impressions makes me think of two extremes, that which you can find in nature in the desert, and on the opposite side, the strict lines of architecture,” she says. “This is my first time to Abu Dhabi and it’s quite striking that it was built on sand, with complete desert around. In all the cities I’ve been in, downtown would be the area where culture and life meet but here, walking through the streets, suddenly you can find a square of desert. I have never ever been in a place where next to these huge buildings are just pieces of nothing. I decided to work with the imagery that comes from this diversity, particularly with surfaces.”

8

Clearly visiting the UAE has got her creative juices flowing. “A residency has always been a turning point in my life,” she explains. “You boost your own confidence and get completely new impressions and fresh perspectives. Through every residency I have solved some artistic problems or found new ground for creative development. It has always been a very important experience.” Works of art created by resident artists are displayed at exhibitions at Abu Dhabi Art Hub and at the centre’s sister venue, Liwa Art Hub. Pieces also go on tour around many galleries across the UAE before they settle back in the Art Hub’s on-site museum. Meanwhile, the memories and lessons learnt go back with the artists to their home countries, where they are shared and used as sources of inspiration for years to come.

In just over a few decades, the UAE capital has transformed from a sparse desert into a modern metropolis. One of its most interesting aspects is its rich heritage. Historical and cultural symbols are present all through the city, from the charming traditional dhows sailing across the waters of the Corniche to the stately Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque gleaming in the distance. Abu Dhabi is an emirate where the past and present intertwine in harmony

Abu Dhabi hosts a number of world-class events all through the year. For an aerial perspective with a difference, look to the skies for the bi-annual Abu Dhabi Air Expo that attracts thousands of visitors who are eager to experience the action live

53

There really is no better way to see Abu Dhabi than from the sky. Seaplane tour operator Seawings takes visitors on an unforgettable journey that involves a water takeoff and landing. Choose to depart from the waters of Yas Marina or Emirates Palace before enjoying panoramic views of Ferrari World Abu Dhabi and more

Take in a memorable sunrise with a romantic hot air balloon ride over the desert. With the Hajjar mountains in the distance, the deep red sand dunes take the form of a seemingly endless ocean, while oryx, gazelles and wandering camels come into view as the balloon soars higher towards the sky

The emirate boasts a varied topography with a stunning coast and sea, natural islands, magnificent sand dunes and abundant mangrove forests. The mangroves, commonly seen around the capital's islands and sheltered coastal areas, go on for miles and miles and provide essential shelter to local marine life

Master chef Celebrity chef Todd English reveals his recipe for success in Abu Dhabi

As American chef Todd English walks into Abu Dhabi’s Mina Fish Souk on a Monday morning, all eyes are immediately drawn to him. Striding confidently along rows of fresh catches of the day including seabream, crabs, prawns, sword fish and more, English examines the variety of seafood on offer, asking questions about the UAE’s fishing culture and variety of catches available. But, past the long corridors, English soon discovers the rustic restaurant stalls tucked away in the market. Here, it’s a flurry of activity. Visitors are placing orders as men behind stalls furiously de-shell prawns, marinate fish and man the ovens. The air is filled with the scent of fresh seafood as well as traditional spices such as saffron, turmeric and chilli. English seems just at ease here as he is in a five-star kitchen, and rolls up his sleeves to turn juicy tiger prawns on the grill that have been coated in a fiery spice marinade, much to the delight of the stall owners who cheer him on in Arabic. As Concierge finds out, the language of cooking is, after all, universal.

Todd English began his career at the age of 15 working at a professional kitchen before going on to attend the Culinary Institute of America, where he graduated with honours. He went on to hone his skills with Jean Jacques Rachou at New York’s La Cote Basque and then relocated to Italy, apprenticing at Ristorante “dal Pescatore” in Canneto sull’Oglio (Mantova) as well as Paracucchi Locanda dell’Angelo (Ameglia). It was during his time in Italy that English drew on his own cultural heritage and crafted his own signature approach to cooking. Returning to the United States at the age of 25, English’s future as a chef was cemented after being appointed Executive Chef of the award-winning northern Italian restaurant Michela’s in Massachusetts. Yet another milestone followed with the opening of his first restaurant, Olives, in Charlestown,

Boston in 1989. This 50-seat storefront restaurant drew international applause for its rustic Mediterranean menu and Olives eventually went international, with new locations in the iconic Bellagio hotel in Las Vegas, Mexico city and now, Abu Dhabi. The decision to open an Olives restaurant in the UAE capital was not hard at all. “Abu Dhabi has a bustling multinational community with a great appreciation for food and international cuisine. It really is the perfect playground for a passionate chef. The better question would be, why not Abu Dhabi?” says English. Olives Abu Dhabi will open its doors later this month at the Venetian Village, a project by the Abu Dhabi National Hotels (ADNH), which is located within The Ritz-Carlton Abu Dhabi, Grand Canal development.

The location is ideal as the Venetian Village showcases elegant Italian architecture at its spectacular beachfront location in Khor Al Maqtaa, and it’s here that English hopes to impress visitors. “Designed in its signature setting, Olives Abu Dhabi presents my own interpretation of Mediterranean cuisine in a wide range of delicious homemade pastas, steaks, rotisserie dishes, brick-oven pizzas and much more. Olives was the first restaurant concept that I opened up and has always been a second home for me – a feeling I hope Abu Dhabi’s diners will get to experience,” explains English. Offering a taste of what’s to come, an exclusive dinner during Abu Dhabi Food Festival at The Forge restaurant featured fine flavours and textures with lobster and corn bisque, foie gras raviolini, pan-seared

seabass with crab risotto and Australian beef tenderloin with rosemary polenta, while lemon and lime pannacotta ended the exceptional meal on a sweet note. While the Abu Dhabi menu will feature his signature “rustic Mediterranean” dishes, he has also been open to local Arabian inspirations, which was evident even while touring the Mina Fish Souk. English explains: “I have always been fascinated by the wonderful f lavours of Middle Eastern food and the aromatic spices in the region. I couldn’t help but indulge in it all during my visit in Abu Dhabi. Each and every spice engages all of your five senses and tickles your taste buds. “At Olives, we serve a wide variety of delectable dishes, however, if I had to point out the best one from the whole menu, it would have to be the beef carpaccio – the combination of the flavours is divine and it’s grown to be a definite favourite with diners. To fully cater to the market, we will also be

offering some regionally inspired dishes to Olives Abu Dhabi menu. One of the ideas in mind is a shawerma-inspired flatbread.” English has quickly become one of the best-known restaurant brands in America, publishing several popular cookbooks and producing an Emmy-nominated show, Food Trip that sees the chef travel the world for inspiration. There’s no denying that he’s a very busy man. “There are many different aspects to being in this business nowadays. Today, chefs have to wear many hats and that is all part of the route to success. Each component in this business is linked to one another, and the real challenge remains whether or not you do it right,” says English. Olives Abu Dhabi is poised to become a culinary highlight in the UAE capital with Todd English’s fine, fresh take on rustic Mediterranean cuisine. But then, you would expect nothing less from a chef who still regards food as, quite simply, “magical”.

HERITAGE VILLAGE Designed to resemble a traditional oasis village, this quaint attraction provides an interesting glimpse into the emirate’s past. There’s a Bedouin tent, reconstructions of original date-palm houses, an example of the ancient falaj irrigation system and a small spice shop selling dried herbs and other trinkets.

EMIRATES PALACE The iconic palace takes pride of place at the tip of the Abu Dhabi Corniche and embodies the luxury lifestyle the capital has cultivated. Until recently, the most expensive hotel ever to be built, the impressive structure is richly adorned with precious materials. Twelve different shades of marble can be spotted in the cavernous atrium, while the central dome holds dual records as both the largest in the world and the greatest gilded expanse ever created in one building.

My life in Abu Dhabi Emirati artist Mohammed Rashed Naser Al Mazrouie talks about life in the UAE capital

}

1 Abu Dhabi Corniche 2 Artwork by Mohammed Al Mazrouie

As an artist and writer in Abu Dhabi, my interests always veer towards anything related to arts and culture in the UAE. I really enjoy spending my free time at the city’s cultural centre, which is now known as Abu Dhabi Authority for Culture and Heritage (ADACH). I have worked there in the past, having immediately felt a strong connection to the place. I think ADACH is a great venue for networking and to get together with likeminded people. To be honest, I am always attracted to such places – those that are vibrant and full of positive cultural vibes. I do not stick to a specific schedule and always prefer my weekends to be relaxed. I endeavour to try something different each week, even if that means just trying out a new dish. I love Asian cuisine in general because it’s so varied and flavourful. While there are many wonderful restaurants in the city, one of my favourite Asian restaurants remains Toki at Hilton Abu Dhabi. When I have friends visiting, I always recommend they head to Abu Dhabi

Corniche. Just walking along t he Corniche at night is one of life’s simple pleasures. Also, visitors should take the time to visit the quaint fish market by the marina, which is another special spot for me. One of my fondest memories has been meeting the late UAE president HH Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan near Marina Mall. As the country’s founding father, he was such a visionary and it really was a moment I will never forget. I also regularly participate in different cultural and art events across the country. My most recent exhibition was in March at Fann-À-Porter Art Gallery in Kempinski Hotel Mall of The Emirates in Dubai and I’ve received great feedback. Overall, it has been very encouraging, which in turn motivates me to keep experimenting. I’m always trying to do something different and creative in life. There’s no shortage of things to do and see in Abu Dhabi, from the iconic Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque to the annual Abu Dhabi Art fair, but I

One of my fondest memories has been meeting the late UAE president HH Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan

believe that the Emirates Writers Union (Abu Dhabi) has special significance. It puts a lot of thought and effort into creating daily and ongoing cultural activities for enthusiasts throughout the year, independent of the usual annual events and seasonal occasions that are already established in the emirate’s social calendar. I really admire the growth and potential of Abu Dhabi and cultural initiatives such as the Emirates Writers Union really help bring the artistic community together.
