E D I T O R ’S N O T E —— Dubai is a city of intriguing contrasts, with everything from luxury beachside resorts and gourmet restaurants to historical quarters and cultural attractions all vying for attention. May is one of the best months to explore the emirate before temperatures peak, so be sure to make the most of all that Dubai has on offer. A trip to the city wouldn’t be complete without exploring Dubai’s exceptional retail offering. If you’re in need of accessory inspiration, turn to page 28 for our edit of stunning jewellery watches from some of the horological world’s leading maisons. Then, on page 40, Emirati jewellery designer Fatema Al Dhaheri talks about the inspiration behind her fine jewellery line, Ruwaya. In just a few short years Dubai’s burgeoning art scene has led to the city becoming one of the foremost art and culture hubs in the region. On page 52, we take a look at the city’s most inspired artistic quarters, from the old world charm of galleries in Al Fahidi Historical Neighbourhood to the trendy show spaces of up and coming districts like d3 near Downtown Dubai. Keeping our focus on all things cultural, this month’s photo essay, on page 56, delves deeper into the historic tradition of dhow building. A true labour of love and time-honoured legacy, these magnificent vessels were once the lifeline of the nation and today continue to play a role in the trading industry while also establishing a beloved sporting pastime. We head to the Jaddaf dhowbuilding yard to discover more. With so much of the city just waiting to be explored, it’s best to get an early start on your day. This month, on page 66, we bring you Dubai’s best breakfast spots that combine iconic locations with fabulous fare. Finally, if you’re feeling inspired by our magazine, visit myconcierge.com to book an experience and start your Dubai adventure.

From underwater viewings to oneon-one meetings and photo experiences, it’s a great way to spend the afternoon and learn a little more about these loveable seabirds. At the end of last year, the penguin colony welcomed its first chick into the fold. Peter, the Gentoo chick of Ski Dubai residents Sneezy and Mr Sim, added much excitement to the enclosure. Since then, the successful breeding programme has seen the arrival of three more chicks, affectionately named Litmit, Apple and Pecan. With each birth the team at Ski Dubai has been kept busy, monitoring their weight, nutrition and progress as they get to grips with feeding and exploring their new environment. Catch up with these new arrivals and the rest of the penguins during their daily afternoon march. Afterwards be sure to head up to Ski Dubai’s cosy Avalanche Cafe. Perched mid-way up the slopes, this picturesque spot is perfect for enjoying a warming cup of hot chocolate as you recap on the day’s activities and enjoy the wintery scenes below.

TOUCH OF CLASS ——— Bringing chic Italian design to the region, Capritouch has opened its flagship Middle East store at The Dubai Mall
Homegrown Italian maison Capritouch is something of a newcomer to the luxury scene. Yet since its launch in 2009, the brand has gone from strength to strength and developed into a dynamic design house with a new boutique in Dubai. Capritouch includes apparel, accessories, footwear, fabrics, works of art and designer furniture from the Capritouch Home Collection – all of which are exclusively made in Italy. The brand has opened its first store in the region with a stunning boutique at The Dubai Mall. Partnered with Ludovica Andreoni, the talented Italian designer behind LA Jewellery, the firm creates truly stunning hand-made adornments. The metals used by Ludovica Andreoni are primarily white, yellow, pink or burnished gold, combined at times with enamels of all colours, or with precious stones ranging from diamonds in all colours (from the classic white to brown to black to yellow) to rubies, sapphires and emeralds. Not to mention semiprecious stones such as amethysts, garnet gems, coral and turquoises all set to create intense shades of colour with a touch a sheer elegance. 3

EVERY THING IS HANDM ADE AND ITALIAN FOR CAPRITOUCH AND LUDOVICA ANDREONI JEWELS 5
Tonino Cacace, Capritouch CEO, says: “Today Dubai is the place to be with millions of potential customers. The boutique will offer a different type of retail experience, offering a glimpse of life on Capri Island.” The Capritouch story began at the prestigious Capri Palace Hotel & Spa, one of the island’s most beautiful venues frequented by Europe’s stylish set. It was here, at the atelier of the historic Mariorita boutique, within the hotel, that Capritouch came to life. Drawing on the finest Italian production techniques, the team has created a selection of fashion, crafts, furniture, art and architecture, all now carrying the Capritouch name. Capturing the ‘Dolce Vita’ of 1950’s and 60’s Capri, the maison’s fashion line showcases bold colours and fabrics. Linens, cashmere and silks in myriad hues are evocative of the sophisticated fashions from the streets of Capri. Each piece is handmade, ensuring quality at every stage, from cutting to finishing. Very important for Capritouch are the handcrafted sandals, each adapted to the preferences of each customer. In-house cobblers have created more than 200 models to choose from, which are then made in front of clients to preserve the timehonoured shoe-making craft. The bespoke nature of each piece means sandals can be personalised with embellishments such as precious stones and Swarovski crystals, by customising the heel height or initials monogrammed on the leather sole. Artisans from the island also craft the exclusive Capritouch Ballerina sandals, created entirely by hand. Each piece is then finished with Swarovski crystals and bows. Cacace adds: “The idea that everything is handmade and Italian for Capritouch and Ludovica Andreoni jewels, is our main value.”
Capritouch is distributed in Capri, Bodrum, Marmaris, New York, Miami, Paris and Dubai. Ludovica Andreoni is also distributed in Rome. Visit: capritouch.com and ludovicandreoni.it

Jewellery has long been regarded as a universal adornment. It has evolved over centuries when the use of shells and stone were more prominent in prehistoric times to the more modern day use of precious metals and gems. While in the past jewellery was used to represent status, today it best reflects individual style, much like luxury timepieces. Leading maisons are combining the best of both worlds to create timepieces that boast the highest technical functions and movements, housed in exquisite jewelled cases. Concierge highlights some iconic timepieces with a sparkling touch.

Clé de Cartier has won over many admirers this season. One look at the gorgeous Flying Tourbillon watch and it’s easy to see why, as the complex complication commands attention even amidst its fully diamond-set case. Clé means key in French and the timepiece crown represents this aspect with flair. Clé de Cartier recalls the traditional turning of a key to wind a clock and effortlessly combines the maison’s watchmaking heritage with more creative interpretations. The Dubai Mall, 04 4340434
The maison’s iconic Serpenti watch was first created in the 1940s and still remains one of its most recognisable designs. In a fitting tribute, Bulgari’s stunning Serpenti collection features a head-over-tail design where coiling ‘scales’ are assembled and carved one by one, in red enamel or diamond pavé. One of our favourites is the chic 26mm edition in 18-carat pink gold that boasts over 200 brilliantcut diamonds on its case and pink mother of pearl dial. The Dubai Mall, 04 3410662
We’re in awe of the new Fabergé Lady Libertine II timepiece. A striking addition to the brand’s Dalliance collection, it’s inspired by Gemfields’ Kagem emerald mine in Zambia and uses gems in an unconventional manner that moves away from conventional cuts. The stylised sun motif in the middle of the dial mesmerises while the central dome is set ablaze with a bed of snow-set diamonds, while two blued silver arrows indicate the time. A CUT ABOVE ——— Concierge catches up with Alain Schimel, Zilli founder and chairman, about the importance of fashion and family
Championing inimitable craftsmanship, high quality textiles and a keen eye for style, it’s easy to see why Zilli is now a firm fixture on the radar of today’s urban gent. From a humble workshop in Lyon to a name that is respected globally for luxury menswear, Maison Zilli’s meteoric rise is nothing short of remarkable. Reflecting fine French elegance with Italian heart, the enigmatic family-owned business already boasts a presence in over 20 countries, including the United Arab Emirates, and shows no signs of slowing down. Famed for its fashion-forward thinking and exemplary technique, much of Zilli’s success stems from the creation of the first luxury leather jacket in 1970. A jacket that, even decades later, remains extremely covetable. While a luxe leather jacket is considered a mainstay in any modern wardrobe today, Maison Zilli was chief ly responsible for elevating its style status with bold designs crafted from exotic skins. Think slick jackets made with peccary and crocodile skin, while details such as silk linings in dynamic patterns and triple-stitched seams quickly became hallmarks of the brand. And the trailblazer behind it all was Alain Schimel. Despite a short vocational detour, during which he almost pursued a career in business management, Schimel confesses he’s “always been impassioned by style and elegance”. Even at a young age he was surrounded by clothes, as his parents owned a coatmaking workshop in Lyon and opened several shops in the French city. “By chance, when I was 25, I went with my father to his Italian tailor Teofilo Zilli in Lyon and was immediately impressed with his craftsmanship when working with leather. He may not have been great as a suit tailor but was really a master when it came to working on skins and furs. I quickly decided to invest in Zilli’s workshop and we
became partners,” explains Schimel. Right from the start, his focus was on desirable outfits that weren’t available in the market at the time – starting with sporty leather jackets in very luxurious fabrics that were, above all, as light and comfortable as possible. “I travelled a lot and brought the most unexpected leathers I could find to Zilli. It was a permanent challenge to work on all the different categories of hides, most of them exotic, and it was kind of a revolution at the time.” Recounting the inspiration behind his avantgarde leather jacket, Schimel explains: “I wanted to give men freedom by going against the trend of the very formal suits at that time and offer them something special, unique and emotional. That was the ultimate sensation of luxury – fantastic, rare and sensuous skins for exceptional jackets as light as silk. I knew it was crazy to work on these kind of clothes at the time but I have always had faith in the products, combining Zilli’s know-how and my intuition to find the best materials and quality that would make the difference.” Soon enough, Schimel was joined by his wife and children, and 50 years later and Zilli is still very much a family-owned business, growing from just four people in the first workshop in 1965 to nearly 400 employees worldwide today. “I feel lucky to work with my family. As a family business, it means we can make decisions more quickly and that we can tackle challenges and take more risks. It also means we can trust our intuition. Actually, the main challenge we face is to avoid talking about Zilli all the time and preserve our personal life. It’s not an easy subject as we are all passionate about what we do. A few years ago my daughter-in-law and sonin-law joined us too, so we act like an Italian house with all the family on board,” he says.

THIS SEASON, THE SPRING/SUMMER 2016 COLLECTION ECHOES THE BRAND’S SIGNATURE BLEND OF LAID-BACK LUXURY CHAMPIONING SOFT, FLUID DESIGNS AND DREA MY PALET TE OF BLUES
While its trademark leather jackets remain the house’s core business, since 1996 Zilli’s main collection has come to include suits, jackets, jeans, knitwear, shirts, ties, shoes, bags and leather goods. This season, the Spring/Summer 2016 collection echoes the brand’s signature blend of laid-back luxury as it champions soft, fluid designs and a dreamy palette of blues. Once again jackets prove to be the hero pieces, in particular Xiam, a featherweight, quilted silk number; Xavier, a velvety calfskin cover-up and Xerus, in a bold cobalt blue with contrasting orange stitching – all sporting plenty of springtime style. Take your pick from casual separates, comprised of 100 percent linen joggers, boat-neck knitwear and silk and bamboo tees, as well as soft calfskin Derbies, espadrilles and funky loafers with alligator braiding and velvet orange details. For more formal occasions, however, the striking midnight blue dinner jacket is a definite evening essential. For the first time, Zilli also introduces caiman snake scales to leather goods which is brilliantly paired with other rich textiles, most notably silk in the Boomerang collection and a dapper new messenger, briefcase and clutch from the Classic range which combines the exotic skin with new-grain calfskin. Despite the house’s continued new additions, to the enigmatic Alain Schimel, a good luxury jacket is still as much of a fashion investment as an expensive timepiece. “For me, classic never means boring. It means real value, true elegance and timeless appeal. I think a classic piece is as precious as a high-complication watch that you keep for ages. Then you give your jacket to your son and it becomes more and more appealing over the years – never too trendy and never out of fashion. Our peccary leather jackets are a good example of this definition as are our simple cashmere and vicuna coats with fur lining.”
Maison Zilli has come a long way thanks in part to the dedicated craftsmen and their invaluable skills. “We still have people who have been with the company ever since the first collection launched in 1970. Before they retire, they will pass down their know-how and train the next generation of craftsmen. I am very proud that the artisans in our Lyon workshops were awarded France’s prestigious ‘Entreprise du Patrimoine vivant’ (Living Heritage Company) in 2011 for their savoir-faire. In fact, we’re the first men’s luxury company to receive it,” says Schimel with pride, adding that the Maison is now looking to the future. “We cannot count on just our history and recognition to help us accelerate the business. We still don’t have a certain level of brand awareness in some parts of the world such as Asia or South America. But it’s good in a way and my children will have to go further in the development of Zilli. It’s already been quite a success despite our young age.” For Zilli, the Middle East remains an important market. Partnering with BinHendi Enterprises, the Maison boasts three stores in Dubai – Wafi City, Mall of the Emirates and The Dubai Mall – with plans to expand to Abu Dhabi. Speaking about the future of the menswear fashion industry, Schimel believes the focus will now be on innovating and developing new technical fabrics that are comfortable without compromising on the service aspect, including made-to-measure requests and bespoke orders. With Zilli’s avant-garde approach to men’s fashion, there’s a lot to be excited about, as he explains: “Succeeding in the transmission of our rich heritage is a challenge but I am confident that we will manage this with patience and time. Zilli is, for me and my family, an extraordinary story and adventure. I’d never hesitate to do it all over again.”

MODERN CLASSICS ——— Emirati designer and founder of Ruwaya, Fatema Al Dhaheri talks about the allure of jewellery
Fatema Al Dhaheri’s eyes light up when she speaks about jewellery. Since founding her own jewellery brand Ruwaya late last year, the talented Emirati designer has become highly-sought after by discerning clientele who appreciate her striking accessory designs and grand one-off pieces that are crafted using precious gems. Al Dhaheri was initially introduced to the industry through the family business, which includes popular jewellery chain Amwaj, but it wasn’t long before she decided to forge her own path. “My father always said that if you want to be perfect then you have to learn. I did just that and studied all I could about jewellery design – I thought it was amazing. I started looking at different catalogues and displays, and began to imagine the sort of jewellery I would like to wear myself and what I thought would appeal to others,” says Al Dhaheri. Discovering her love for jewellery design, she began to experiment with creations and sketch customised pieces for the company’s clients, all while training to become an accredited jewellery professional. Recognising her natural talent and growing potential, her father suggested she consider starting her own brand of accessories. “After exploring and learning more about other jewellers in the market, I realised I wanted to do something new in the world of jewellery. To me, stones are fascinating. For example, no two diamonds are the same and they each have different clarities and properties – when you look at it, you see different things. I use a method that’s inspired by this and all my pieces are entirely handmade. My
designs are dictated by the shape of the stones used and are complemented by their natural colours,” explained Al Dhaheri. Inspired by her heritage and family as well as traditional Arabian art, Ruwaya has been a labour of love for the designer. It is named after her grandmother, who Al Dhaheri explains was also very creative. With a wonderful vintage feel to it, the name also cleverly represents the old and new coming together in spectacular fashion. Ruwaya boasts three distinct collections, including Dujaan that features one-off and limited edition jewellery pieces, Marari that is inspired by the tradition of wearing long chains in the Arab community and Nayra with delicate pieces at more accessible prices. One of the highlights of Ruwaya’s collection is the Dujaan Dancing Doll necklace and ring that reflects the grace of a dancer using cascades of pastel pink gems. The stones used are the most important element and their individual natural characteristics and colour shines through in all three collections. Sourced directly by Al Dhaheri from all over the world, precious gems such as brown diamonds are often used as is, without being overly polished and statement necklaces and rings are designed around each stone. This is in stark contrast to other jewellery brands that refine and often cut gems to fit designs. The avant-garde packaging is also creating a buzz, with jewellery placed in elegant pink leather cases that resemble old-fashioned trunks. “I travel a lot and find really nice gems so the pieces are dependent on what I find. Some settings
have brown diamonds while others have pink or pastel colours. I believe that life is full of colour. I like, what I call, ‘real’ colours that represent nature. I then design around the stones because I want the piece to retain a natural feel. “In all three collections, I tried to combine modern designs with a traditional Arabic aesthetic. Even with the name Ruwaya, the font we’ve used is a cross between English and Arabic, so it has a different feel,” explains Al Dhaheri. Insisting that Ruwaya is not just another ‘design and produce’ jewellery brand, Al Dhaheri also considers bespoke requests from clients that appreciate her creative approach. “I want women to feel more intimated with nature and use jewellery to feel more confident. We live in a small society so if you see others wearing the same piece, you won’t be particularly impressed. People always want to be different and unique. “I consider special requests that are a good fit with my designs and reflect my identity. If a client wants a Marari or Nayra piece from Ruwaya, I’ll take a look at the stones I have and sketch a few designs that are based on my inspirations and what I love most about the stones.” From the grand baroque-inspired pearl chains dotted with sparkling diamonds to the colourful gems encased in white and rose gold, Ruwaya is an ode to timeless elegance.

Located in Dubai Marina’s luxe Grosvenor House property, B/Attitude Spa invites guests to embrace a world of far off exoticism where every element has been carefully crafted to evoke the tranquillity and spirituality of the east. Here, dark wood floors, black marble and imposing Oriental statues are contrasted by intimate candlelight and rich sunset hues. Fortunately the spa menu follows suit on the diversity front, boasting a host of treatments that infuse traditional techniques with state-of-the-art beauty advancements. Often referred to as liquid gold, the benefits of honey and royal jelly are championed in the Honey Paradise Hammam Ritual. Ideal for those seeking an ultra nourishing body overhaul, the 75-minute treatment begins with a full cleanse and body peel which prepares the skin for the rich body mask that follows. Made from natural ingredients, this super mask not only leaves the skin feeling soft and supple but also gives off a lovely fragrant scent.
For many chocolate is generally revered as a temptation to approach with caution, yet thanks to The Pearl Spa’s Chocolate Indulgence treatment, you can satisfy your sweet tooth without the guilt. Deliciously decadent, the 75-minute session promises to firm up the body and provide extra nourishment for the skin due to the active ingredients found within Swiss chocolate. An invigorating full body scrub kicks things off by getting the body perfectly prepped for a delightfully chocolately wrap. This is used together with an anti-aging concentrate for added plumpness and younger looking skin. Nestled within the luxurious Four Seasons Resort Dubai at Jumeirah Beach, the spa also offers treatments that harness the power of rich camel milk as well as the exfoliating benefits of crushed pearl extracts. After your session be sure to try the venue’s fantastic facilities, including a steam room, heated whirlpool, ice fountain and a ‘sensory shower’ complete with ambient sounds, relaxing aromas and mood lighting.

But while the emirate does towering and grand with incredible ease, this is a city that has also established itself as an art destination, and is set to become the global crossroads for culture in the Middle East. “The art scene in Dubai has come of age during the past 10 years,” says Laura Egerton, a Dubai-based curator and one of the original team behind Art Dubai, the UAE’s leading international art fair. “Not only have gallery districts been established in areas where there were perhaps only one or two commercial spaces a decade ago but, more importantly, a culture for nurturing creativity has been established.” With a number of artist residency programmes and educational initiatives underway, the grassroots art scene is blooming with fresh talent, while established auction houses including Christie’s, Bonhams and Sotheby’s regularly hold sales of Arab and Middle Eastern art. Egerton says: “Due to its geographical centrality Dubai is the ideal global meeting point and its truly cosmopolitan mix of residents means this is the place to experience art from all over the world.” So what can visitors expect from the city’s main art areas? From industrial charm and atmospheric appeal to trendy cultural hangouts, we take a closer look at the expanding artistic community.

—— Built along the Dubai Creek, Al Fahidi Historical Neighbourhood, also known as Bastakiya, is one of the most picturesque spots in Dubai and amid its labyrinthine lanes you’ll find an array of quaint art galleries. The most famous is The Majlis Gallery, which was originally opened by long-time Dubai resident Alison Collins in 1989. Back then it was a place for local art enthusiasts to gather, but 27 years on it is one of Dubai’s premier fine art venues. The XVA Gallery, which specialises in contemporary art from the Arab World, Iran and the subcontinent is another must-see. Close by you’ll also find Tashkeel, a villa divided into six individual studio spaces, which are rented out to artists, who use the space to work and exhibit. Members of the public are free to drop by Tashkeel and chat to artists, as well as view their work and check out the latest exhibitions. Elsewhere in this area you’ll find Dubai Museum, which is housed in the Al Fahidi Fort (Dubai’s oldest existing building) and Sheikh Mohammed Centre for Cultural Understanding, which holds regular talks on UAE heritage.
—— Dubai’s newest creative zone, d3, is a purposebuilt development aimed at Dubai’s creative industry. Located near Downtown Dubai, it takes its inspiration from London’s Shoreditch and New York’s Meatpacking District, and while only in its first phase (it opened in 2015), d3 aims to be the epicenter of Dubai’s counterculture in the coming years. This impressive art hub is already home to an assortment of funky art galleries, boutique stores, pop-up cafés, studios and offices, and recently played host to the Dubai Photo Exhibition and Mario Testino’s Heat showcase, as well as events such as Downtown Design, Sole DXB and Fashion Forward. The first d3 gallery opening was familyowned Sconci Art Gallery, which houses an impressive collection ranging right from the seventeenth century to the modern day. Pieces of note include a signed Andy Warhol print, as well as one of the most important works in modern Italian art history, I’m Infantile, by Italian painter Mario Schifano. Located on the first f loor of building eight, it’s definitely worth a look.

—— With more than 20 galleries and creative spaces spread across 250,000 square feet of warehouse space, Alserkal Avenue is Dubai’s foremost arts district. Admittedly, it has a more urban aesthetic than the cultural and heritage quarter, and isn’t as polished as areas such as DIFC or d3, but within this industrial neighbourhood you’ll find an impressive concentration of large art galleries with regular exhibitions that bring an edge to the local art scene. “Alserkal Avenue is now home to original Dubai galleries, The Third Line and Green Art Gallery,” says Egerton. “As well as Grey Noise and Lawrie Shabibi, which are gaining critical recognition through their presence in international art fairs and curated exhibitions.” Meanwhile, new openings such as the Custot Gallery and the Jean-Paul Najar Foundation have further cemented the increasingly popular area as a haven for international art.
—— The Arc de Triomphe-style Gate building at DIFC is an imposing structure and perhaps not one you’d automatically associate with an art district. However, this grey-slate construction is the entrance to the Gate Village, where corporates and creatives meet. As well as banks and financial institutions, there are currently 14 art galleries operating in this vibrant area, and with swanky bars and restaurants added to the mix, this is where well-heeled art enthusiasts flock. While established galleries, including Opera Gallery and Cuadro Fine Art Gallery, offer more than enough to keep connoisseurs happy, it’s also worth looking out for DIFC’s biannual Art Nights showcase, which take place in March and November. For one night only all the galleries here throw open their doors and the area buzzes with exciting exhibitions, art shows, talks and live music.

H ISTORIC CRAFTS ——— Dhow building remains a time-honoured practice in the United Arab Emirates
57
the m a jestic sight of dhows cut ting across glit tering waterways such as Dubai Creek and the capital’s Mina Zayed Port is a welcome reminder of days gone By
Earlier in the year, the Bu Tinah dhow sailing race delighted thousands of visitors at Abu Dhabi’s Corniche where sights of these traditional boats gliding against the backdrop of towering skyscrapers presented a striking contrast between the country’s past and present. All eyes are now on the Al Gaffal Dhow Race, set to take place in Dubai this month where around 100 traditional boats, measuring 60 feet each, will compete in a prestigious race that was created in honour of pearl divers of the past who played a key role in the economic development of the country. Concierge goes behind the scenes to witness the craftsmanship of these majestic boats, reflecting centuries of skill and expertise handed down from father to son. When we visit the Jaddaf dhow-building yard in Dubai, a dedicated craftsman is already hard at
work, crouching beneath the great hull of a wooden ship, shaping and smoothing each plank until it takes on exactly the right form. No structured plans have been drawn: instead the dhow is realised through a combination of inherent skill and expert knowledge handed down through the generations. Slowly months of hard work and diligent attention to detail begin to pay off as the magnificent boat takes shape. Much of the endeavour is conducted with traditional tools and methods even today, meaning the entire exercise requires a great deal of patience and a steady hand. Finally, the dhow is ready to take to the waves, shaped by the many skilled artisans who have painstakingly hammered and honed every rivet and wooden plank into place. For most, the majestic sight of dhows cutting across glittering waterways such as Dubai Creek and
the capital’s Mina Zayed Port is a welcome reminder of days gone by and the deep-rooted traditions of the past that reaffirm the country’s long-lasting connection to the sea. Traditionally these wooden boats were relied upon to keep the bustling ports of Dubai and Abu Dhabi af loat as they serviced busy markets and facilitated the export and import of a wide range of produce. The boats not only carried local wares for sale across oceans to India, China and East Africa, they also returned to port laden with fish to eat. During the summer months, these versatile vessels also played a central role in the pearl diving trade which was at the time the mainstay of the country’s economy. The boats sailed out to the Gulf’s oyster banks where brave divers plunged into the waters to retrieve precious pearls.
P h o t o e s s ay / ex p er i en c e
While modern dhows are driven by engines instead of sails, the boats still feature the hull’s traditional shape and distinctive triangular sails. In another ode to the past, builders continue to forego complex drawings and plans and instead craft dhows using temporary pieces of wood that are eventually substituted with permanent wood.
59
The annual Al Gaffal Dhow Race takes place on May 23. The challenging course begins at the small uninhabited island of Sur Bu Na’air, 50 nautical miles west of the UAE, and ends in Dubai. The best way to experience this traditional sporting event is by hopping aboard ferry rides operated around Dubai Marina.
60
In an effort to protect the tr aditions of the past, dhow-building is still carried out in a m anner faithful to early techniques
These extraordinary boats, once the lifeblood of the nation, are still used today to ferry produce by a new generation of dhow builders. “I was raised by watching my father and grandfather working on dhows and it became part of my life. Dhows are still so important to trading in the UAE. When I was old enough, I started building dhows alongside my brother,” says local dhow builder Huraiz bin Touq. Materials for these grand vessels were originally imported from surrounding countries. Teak for the keel and masts was brought from India, rope came from Zanzibar and sail canvas was sourced from Bahrain and Kuwait. Nowadays wood comes from Malaysia, India or Pakistan while iron and pins are available in Dubai. Traditional tools of the dhowbuilding trade were simple aids, such as a hammer, saw, chisel and plane.
In an effort to protect the traditions of the past, dhow-building is still carried out in a manner faithful to early techniques. “You should have good experience in this industry. From five to seven years, depending on the size of the dhow. We do not work from drawings at all. Instead we start the dhow with temporary wood cuts and then substitute them with permanent wood pieces. This procedure works better because it gives you an idea of how the dhow will look rather than trying to imagine it from drawings. “We have around 20 workers in our dhowbuilding teams. One group works on cutting the wood, another on the design templates and the rest work on melting the iron to join with the wood,” says Huraiz who is currently working on a dhow he believes will be one of the UAE’s largest.
Modern dhows are now driven by engines instead of sails, but their heritage still shines through in the hull’s traditional shape and distinctive triangular sails called lateens. Dhows continue to ply regular trade routes to and from the UAE and take centre stage at a host of racing events held across the country each year. The skills of both dhow builders and sailors are showcased at prestigious competitions such as the Al Gaffal Dhow Race held in Dubai in May that sees hundreds of dhows participate. Just like his father and grandfather, Huraiz has dedicated his life to the art of dhow building. Many months of tireless toil pay off when the magnificent boats finally take to the waves and the satisfied builders look on with a sense of pride that is shared by the generations before them.

A TASTE OF THE EXOTIC ——— Concierge chats about authentic Asian cuisine with Darrell O’Neill, executive chef at Shangri-La Hotel, Dubai
With premier properties across the globe, the Shangri-La Hotel brand is revered for its five-star hospitality and gourmet fare and here, in Dubai, the first-class culinary offerings fall under the charge of executive chef Darrell O’Neill. With over 24 years of experience in the industry as well as a previous tenure in Dubai working at prestigious properties such as Burj Al Arab and Madinat Jumeirah, O’Neill joined the culinary helm at Shangri-La Hotel, Dubai in 2014. “I oversee the whole culinary operation, ensuring quality and consistency in our all products at Dunes Café, Shang Palace, Hoi An and ikandy ultralounge. I make sure our menus are creative, well balanced, and exciting to our guests and I’m also responsible for making sure we have the right staff for each restaurant and that they are trained correctly. “I also love coming up with new creative promotions, such as launching brunches, unique dining experiences and even having Michelin star chefs visit from Shangri-La hotels around the world,” explains O’Neill. As a Singaporean hotel group, Asian fare is an integral part of the brand identity and Shangri-La Hotel, Dubai boasts some of city’s best eastern offerings at its signature Chinese restaurant Shang Palace and Vietnamese fine dining restaurant Hoi An. Speaking on the contrasts between the two cuisines, O’Neill says; “Chinese and Vietnamese cuisine are very different. Vietnamese cuisine is lighter and more delicate in its flavours and it benefits from a strong French influence. I would personally say that it leans more towards Thai cuisine in terms of the similarities in the fruit and herbs they use in their dishes. The Chinese dishes we prepare at Shang Palace are very authentic and provincial in their style with very distinct flavours.” Expanding on this traditional approach to cooking, O’Neill reveals: “all of the chefs from Hoi An are from Vietnam, headed by our talented Chef Quan. This ensures we achieve 100 percent authenticity in the cuisine we deliver to our guests. In Shang Palace, we follow the same thought process and only hire Chinese chefs, but we are very fortunate in this restaurant to have chefs with their own areas of expertise from preparing dim sum to creating delicious barbecue dishes and even expert wok fare. It’s very interesting and our head chef Chunlin Xu runs a tight ship. “In addition to authenticity across our culinary teams, we try where possible to mirror this philosophy in the restaurants too. In terms of the décor at the restaurants, they have both been designed to reflect the countries they represent. So in Shang Palace, you can expect a refined ambiance with gold
and red hues and Chinese antique replicas, with the service staff taking pride in ensuring dining experience truly reflects the art of Chinese cuisine. In Hoi An, you’ll experience a more intimate and cosy atmosphere, full of colour and charming lanterns hanging from the ceiling. Dunes Café provides an open, light space to enjoy a lively meal of your choice with buffet-style service – this is perfect for groups that have a range of tastes.” With Dubai’s ever-expanding repertoire of high-end restaurants, O’Neill admits that competition can be fierce. “Dubai remains one of the most exciting culinary destinations in the world, and what’s even more exciting is that there is still so much more to come. Although this makes competition very tough, particularly as there are a lot more standalone restaurants that have emerged on the scene, and this will certainly challenge many hotels on the way they run their business, I do think this has enriched the dining scene in Dubai.” To stay ahead, O’Neill emphasises: “we are true to the product and the cuisine by making sure it’s an authentic experience. We have systems in place so we can track what the bestselling dishes are and we make sure to keep them on the menus as signature dishes. We have many loyal guests, so we try to ensure that their favourite choices are always available. Our chefs are always brimming with ideas, so when developing new dishes and products, we check what products are in season and we also keep an eye on what our competitors are doing and what they are good at. Dubai has such a fantastic choice of restaurants so it’s important to stay true to your own values as a restaurant while constantly innovating to bring something new to the table. “Like most restaurants in Dubai, our products are sourced from all over the world, but of course the hardest products to get would be the dry items like basic spices and sauces for the Chinese kitchen and each chef has his preference in brands. For us it’s even harder as we have a policy of no MSG in any of the dishes we serve, so although it is a challenge, we manage to source very high quality ingredients.” Much like the diverse offerings found at Shangri-La Hotel, Dubai, O’Neill’s pick of his favourite dishes is bursting with exotic influences. “The pho soup from Hoi An is a particular favourite of mine as it reminds me of my travels. The Sri Lankan lobster curry from Dunes Café is irresistible, and proves very popular at our Lobsterlicious theme night every Thursday. Finally, the braised beef rib from Shang Palace is a recent addition to the menu and is absolutely a must-try.” —— To book a table at Shangri-La Hotel, Dubai, contact: 04 3438888

There are several Café Bateel outlets across the city and we recommend you drop by to try their innovative date-infused drinks and selection of desserts with a twist, such as opera cake made with date cream. Pick up preserves including date jam, date balsamic vinegar and date honey along with a signature sparkling date drink as a unique souvenir for friends and family.

If you’re in the market for a world-class timepiece then look no further than Ahmed Seddiqi & Sons. The family-run firm has been in operation for decades, and has grown from humble beginnings on the banks of Dubai Creek to become one of the biggest purveyors of premium watch brands. As one of the region’s most established and trusted timepiece purveyors, only the most exclusive names can be found here. With boutiques across the city including at The Dubai Mall and Mall of the Emirates, each boasts an impressive selection including Rolex, Audemars Piguet, Baume & Mercier, A. Lange & Söhne and Breitling. DA M AS
AL ZAIN
RIVOLI
We love Al Zain for its wonderful blend of traditional and contemporary styles. The Bahraini jeweller’s main collections include Natural Pearls, Bridal, Bronze and High Jewellery, while there are also limited-edition pieces available. Natural Pearls is arguably the most striking of the collections, and each piece contains precious Bahraini pearls. The jeweller is steeped in tradition, and has its roots in the pearl trade of the 1930’s. The family-run business has gone from strength to strength since then with stores across the Middle East, and of course, in Dubai with a presence that includes a boutique at Mall of the Emirates.
This is the place to come for premium accessories, from watches and eye wear to leather goods and writing instruments. There are more than 380 stores in the region, and of course plenty peppered across Dubai, meaning there is ample opportunity to pop in and browse the hundreds of international brands under Rivoli’s umbrella. You’ll be spoiled for choice here with an array of must-have pieces from brands such as Omega, Longines, Rado, Gucci, Tissot and Montblanc. For an even more exclusive experience, The R Lounge at The H Hotel Dubai, caters to Rivoli’s VIP clientele with bespoke collections in a plush space.
We love shopping at Damas where you’ll find collections from some of the most prestigious jewellery houses. Whether you’re in the mood for something that sparkles from Graff Diamonds, a heritage feel with an exquisite piece from Fabergé or a Roberto Coin design straight from the red carpet, there is something to suit all tastes. Established in 1907, from the start Damas was known for exceptional craftsmanship. Twenty years after opening its first store in the Gold Souk in 1959, Damas has become one of the region’s biggest jewellery brands. Its network spans 300 stores throughout the Gulf, across Qatar, Oman, Bahrain, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, and of course throughout Dubai.

DUBAI CREEK
THE WORLD UNDER CONSTRUCTION
DUBAI CREEK, SOUKS AND DUBAI MUSEUM The heart of the city, the Creek is a stunning spot to catch a glimpse of authentic Dubai. See dhows (traditional boats) ply their trade along the waters while early morning visitors will see fishermen at work on the river banks. Also in this part of the city is Dubai Museum, which makes for a fascinating day out with interactive displays and exhibits charting the emirate’s history from its pearl diving days. Stop by the gold, spice and perfume souks for some traditional treasures before leaving this vibrant area.

ASK THE CONCIERGE
Ali Mohamed Khaja, chief concierge at Pullman Dubai Creek City Centre, offers his suggestions for exploring the emirate after dusk
1
Dubai has so many events and activities to keep residents and visitors entertained all year round and, with summer just around the corner, the spring evenings are the perfect time to explore the city. Whether it’s the waters of the Arabian Gulf or the city’s impressive skyline, sunsets here are a breathtaking experience. One of the best venues for sundowners is 360° at Jumeirah Beach Hotel, which boasts great beachfront views and a lively atmosphere. The city never sleeps and there are many lounges, clubs and bars to explore that attract well-known artists, DJs and performers, playing everything from intimate gigs in clubs to large-scale outdoor concerts. The city is also a melting pot of nationalities, so the nightlife is always buzzing as people come together to enjoy great music and good company. Stop by Nasimi Beach at Atlantis The Palm, Mahiki at Jumeirah Beach Hotel or Pacha Ibiza at Madinat Jumeirah for a memorable night out. Couples looking to enjoy a romantic night out should book a dhow cruise along the waters

of Dubai Marina. A number of cruise operators also organise gourmet dinners under the stars, complementing the views of spectacular skyscrapers and twinkling lights along the water’s edge. For a standout culinary experience in Dubai, Al Mahara at the iconic Burj Al Arab Jumeirah is one of the best seafood restaurants in the city, presenting gourmet fare and exceptional service in a stunning setting. There’s plenty for families to enjoy in the evenings too. Take a walk along Jumeirah Beach Residence and The Beach, located just opposite. Both are easy to explore on foot with a wide range of excellent restaurants and cafés to pop in to. The same can be said for Downtown Dubai, which has a lovely promenade of attractions and places to dine in. The city attracts shoppers from all over the world thanks to its varied retail destinations that include everything from world-class malls to charming boutique options. The Dubai Mall is one of my top recommendations for its sheer variety of international and regional brands, many leisure and entertainment attractions and lively atmosphere. While there visitors should definitely try and catch The Dubai Fountain show and visit Burj Khalifa’s At the Top observation decks at Level 124 and Level 148. Other shopping malls of note include Mall of the Emirates and Ibn Battuta Mall. Embrace the UAE’s historic past by visiting Dubai Creek and the Bur Dubai neighbourhood to shop for traditional goods at the local markets and souks, including the famous Gold Souk and Spice Souk. Then, after a day of exploring, relax at our hotel with a signature massage at The Spa by Pullman or enjoy stunning city skyline views from the Azure rooftop bar.
