There are a lot of must-try activities for visitors in the UAE capital but top of the list for me is Ferrari World Abu Dhabi. The largest indoor theme park on the planet, the venue boasts a selection of rides for all age groups, including the piece de resistance – Forumla Rossa, the fastest rollercoaster in the world. The park is located on Yas Island, where visitors will find a large number of other attractions that are well worth a visit, including Yas Waterworld and Yas Marina Circuit. Another signature UAE experience is the desert safari drive. Numerous tour companies offer variations on this excursion, which generally includes a trip to a camel farm, dune driving and a feast of Arabian food at a camp in the desert complete with traditional activities such a henna and shisha smoking. Back in the city, visitors can take in some of the major landmarks, including the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, which is one of the largest and most beautiful in the world. In the evening I recommend booking a table at one of the city’s many excellent eateries. Some of my favourites include Villa Toscana at The St. Regis Abu Dhabi, which serves exquisite Italian food or, for a really stunning setting, Turquoiz at the The St. Regis Saadiyat Island Resort. New restaurants open up here all the time. At Le Royal Méridien Abu Dhabi we have recently launched Market Kitchen, an innovative dining concept that recreates the atmosphere of the traditional Arabian souk with international cuisine served over two levels. We have also just re-opened our popular award-winning Italian venue, Amalfi, which now has a chic new look. For first-rate Arabian cuisine there are lots of options but one of the best is Diwan L’Auberge at Emirates Palace.
Another way for visitors to tap into the history of the UAE is to book a place on the Jalboot - the traditional pearling boat and join a guided tour through the turquoise waters. Pearls were once the lifeblood of the local community and local men would spend up to four months in a row at sea, diving great depths without any equipment to forage on the ocean floor for the precious gems. Demonstrations on board show visitors how the divers managed this feat and offers an opportunity to try a hand at cracking open an oyster, (the pearl inside is yours to keep). The experience, which departs from the pier at Eastern Mangroves Hotel & Spa by Anantara, also includes traditional Arabian food and snacks For more information visit: adpearljourney.ae
D I S C OV E R Ramadan
The end of June marks the start of Ramadan, the Islamic Holy Month. During this period Muslims fast during the hours of daylight, abstaining from all food and drink until the sun sets at night. At this point, the bell tolls for iftar, the traditional fast-breaking feast. Visitors can experience this meal at restaurants around the city where large buffets of Arabian cuisine will be laid on every evening throughout Ramadan. The exact start date will be determined by the position of the moon but is expected to be around June 28.

The birth and subsequent spread of Islam from the Arabian Peninsula to the shores of the Mediterranean and the eastern reaches of Iran brought with it a rich cultural influence. As a result, between the seventh and 12th centuries in particular, the Islamic civilisation became reputed for its great scientific, philosophic and artistic contributions. One important aspect of this was the development of specific styles of Islamic pottery. Countless academic journals, excavation reports and field surveys have since been dedicated to the subject and what started out as the humble craft of shaping earthenware became the prevalent form of Islamic art from the ninth to the 19th century – both in the form of pottery and ornate tiles for walls. Research on its quality and wide array of techniques has led to the Islamic period being regarded as one of the most important in the development of fine-glazed ceramics. From the technically complex ninth century Mesopotamian miniature lustre bowls, to the elegant blue and white Persian Safavid pottery vessels inspired by porcelain from the Yuan and Ming dynasties of China, each period and region added something new. Depending on the context – either religious or for use at court – floral, geometric, calligraphic and animal decoration was used and often combined to result in rich and luxurious vessels. As depictions of human figures in a religious setting was largely frowned upon, tiles decorating the interior walls of mosques tended to show beautiful f loral, geometric and calligraphic motifs.

DIS C O VER/ PO TTERY
Pottery-making first flourished as an art form in Iraq during the ninth century. As a result, ingenious artisans from all over the Islamic world flocked to the capital of the caliphate, Baghdad. Their earliest works were visibly experimental in nature, but a combination of experience and innovation set the tone for later developments. Foreign invasions and dynastic upheavals meant master potters moved with their secrets to new centres of power. Aesthetic styles and technical knowhow evolved in this way over the years and Islam’s medieval artisans left a rich heritage of cultural treasures behind.
1
Referring to the technical side of Islamic ceramics, Kristina Sanne, a London-based art consultant and Islamic Art expert, says: “Potters used minerals that were available to them, such as lapis lazuli and turquoise, continuously developing new techniques to enhance the aesthetic. A striking development was the creation of lustre-ware, which was fired once with an opaque white glaze and a second time in a low-oxygen kiln using glazes containing silver and copper oxides that gave the decoration a shimmery metallic finish.” It was this innovation by the Abbasid artisans of Baghdad that established the legacy of early Islamic potters. The technique was valued by many generations and lustre-ware reached a peak of creativity in Persia during the late 12th
2
and early 13th centuries. According to art historians, potterymaking suffered a blow when the Mongol invasion paralysed Persia’s cultural life and, sadly, it never fully recovered. By the end of the 13th century, the Mongol had largely adopted Islam and supported a revival of its arts. Unfortunately, the new pottery which was created was more subdued in spirit. Islamic artisans did produce some magnificent objects between the 14th and 19th century, but overall, their work at this time lacked the distinctive character of their counterparts from the Middle Ages.

Some of the finest, most authentic, examples of Islamic pottery to have survived the ages are today on display at museums and across the globe. It is important to recognise, however, that the intricately decorated objects showcased at museums were made largely for the wealthy and make up only a small proportion of the total amount of pottery produced. The vast majority was much simpler, unglazed and wheel-thrown vessels meant to perform a wide range of functional tasks. For Abu Dhabi resident Ruth Impey, vessels of the functional variety are her focus. Originally from Scotland, Impey has been working with ceramics since her move to the UAE in 2009. Upon realising the clay she initially began creating pottery with was imported from Europe, she launched the Pottery Research Project and a quest for local clay.

At the forefront of the local pottery tradition in the UAE is Ras Al Khaimah, once known as Julfar. The emirate was famed for its Julfar ware – a type of coarse unglazed pottery – that was produced from the 12th century until around 1950. Commercial pottery production thrived at the foot of the Hajar Mountains with the growth of trade during the 15th and 16th centuries. In fact, the remains of at least 20 stone kilns carved into Wadi Haqeel’s earth here can still be seen in the area – their significance clear, as essentially the last sites of a significant pottery industry in a pre-oil UAE. The Pottery Research Project aims to enrich the country’s cultural narrative. It also endeavours to create an archive of existing research on pottery, retell the forgotten stories of the Julfar potters and analyse clay sources to ascertain minerals that could be used by modern potters. Impey is currently working with academics, museums and Bedouin tribesmen to document traditional techniques, resources and firing methods. She is also reaching out to the government in the hope that historic kiln sites can be preserved for future generations. Impey hopes to make and show a body of work honed from locally sourced clay, formed using traditional and modern

methods. Last year, she travelled to Wadi Haqeel to reconnect with the last remaining links to a bygone era. Here, she met Ahmed Rashed, a potter’s son who spoke of the gruelling conditions in which his father worked. Families would grind mud from stones and collect enough wood to make a fire that could burn at over 700 degrees Celsius for four or five hours in order to shape the clay. “I was able to observe some ancient techniques, such as using a seashell to give a pot’s exterior a smooth finish,” she recalls. Impey received a bag of clay and soil which she brought back to her studio. “The clay becomes a beautifully rich red colour upon firing and produces a strong body, which means it will be possible to make anything from tableware to large jars from it,” she explains. RAK Ceramics, the largest ceramics manufacturer in the world, is also based in Ras Al Khaimah. The company’s geologist is helping Impey experiment with blended local clay and gain access to clay quarries. She hopes to build a replica kiln
from the Julfar period in order to fire pots using traditional techniques. Impey also envisions a visitor centre at Wadi Haqeel, where Emiratis can become apprentice potters and visitors can see traditional pots created before purchasing one. Impey says: “By re-establishing clay sources that can be used by local artists, my dream is to revive the ancient craft.” 8

Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque Abu Dhabi’s beautiful tribute to its Islamic heritage is a striking symbol of peace, harmony and cross-cultural understanding
STATELY STRUCTURE More than 1,000 columns support this magnificent house of worship, many of them clad in marble and inlaid with mother of pearl. Crowning these are some 82 gold-tipped onion domes that contribute to the stunning silhouette of the mosque when viewed from afar. At night, the scene is even more magical as coloured lights cast blue, green and purple pools of light onto the walls and floors in a pattern designed to reflect the phases of the moon.
There are more than 1,400 mosques in the UAE and between them they represent a broad cross-section of Muslim houses of worship around the world. There are the Shi’ite mosques with their ornate blue tiling, Iranian designs with their spacious courtyards and Anatolian-style mosques which display Turkish influences in the large central domes supported by grand pillars. One structure, however, dominates the religious landscape in the UAE and serves as a symbol, not just of the country’s faith, but also of its commitment to uniting and embracing people of different cultures and beliefs. Commissioned by the late president of the UAE, Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nayhan, the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque is a proud emblem of Abu Dhabi’s cultural diversity and, unlike most mosques which are strictly Muslim only, it welcomes visitors of all creeds. Equivalent in size to five football pitches, this vast and beautiful building is wrought of marble, gold, semi-precious stones, crystals and ceramics and features a design inspired by Persian, Mughal and Moorish mosque architecture. It is easy to get caught up in the buzz of Abu Dhabi. With an ever-expanding list of glamorous restaurants, lavish hotels and luxurious attractions all clamouring to be tried in the city, there’s little need to look further afield for entertainment. However, beyond the city borders lies a beautiful and fascinating country complete with dramatic desertscapes, exotic animals, historic castles, ancient ruins and other intriguing sights. There’s the vast swathe of little-occupied land known as the Western Region or Al Gharbia, where beautiful beaches and exotic islands await or Liwa, the oasis town that sits on the edge of the famous Rub Al Khali desert, the largest body of continuous sand in the world. History enthusiasts, meanwhile, can head over to Al Ain, the capital’s second city, which is home to a number of important archaeological sites and museums while adventure seekers can drive out to Hatta for a day spent hiking through the mountains and clambering across rocks to discover hidden pools and canyons. Concierge takes to the road to explore all this and more with a view to discovering some of the best UAE adventures.

Al Gharbia, Abu Dhabi Also known as the Western Region, Al Gharbia is feted for its beautiful beaches – gleaming arcs of white sand that see very few people from one day to the next. The best way to reach them is by hiring a car and driving out along the West Coast road that runs all the way from Dubai through Abu Dhabi to the Saudi Arabian border, offering access to these quiet and unspoiled beach parks along the way. Another opportunity for visitors looking to immerse themselves in nature awaits on Sir Bani Yas Island, an animal sanctuary that’s home to an exotic array of beasts that once formed the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nayhan’s private collection. Now known as the Arabian Wildlife Park, this unusual and fascinating reserve is open to visitors and guests at Desert Islands Resort & Spa by Anantara, the only hotel on the island. Over on the mainland, Jebel Dhanna also boasts beautiful beaches and clear waters where road-trippers can soak up some sun or simply stop off on their way along the coastal highway. The Jebel Dhanna Resort offers weary travellers the perfect place to rest their heads in five-star luxury.

There are many reasons that make it worth undertaking the long trip to Liwa, not least because of its historic significance. The origins of what has since become the UAE can be traced back to Liwa Oasis where the Bani Yas tribe, ancestors of the current ruling family, lived before moving to the coast and laying the foundations of modern Abu Dhabi. The 200-kilometre journey is made more enjoyable by the beautiful scenery with undulating golden sand dunes, some of which reach up to 300 metres high, dominating the landscape. Liwa is situated on the edge of the Empty Quarter, which is known in Arabic as Rub Al Khali and is part of the larger area encompassed by the Western Region. This vast desert stretches from the UAE to Saudi Arabia, Yemen and Oman. Visitors can face southwest and absorb the fact that there’s nothing but dunes for 1,000 kilometres. For the ultimate desert experience, pitch a tent in the sand, light a campfire and enjoy the starry night skies away from the light pollution of the cities. A number of local tour companies offer variations on this experience, including Arabian Desert Safari, Arabian Tours and Arabian Adventures.
4
Those that prefer the comfort of a hotel will find that Liwa has a few excellent accommodation options to choose from. Qasr Al Sarab Desert Resort by Anantara is a five-star palace complete with beautifully designed rooms, a series of excellent finedining options, a world-class spa and a wide choice of action-adventure activities that take advantage of the surrounding landscape. The Tilal Liwa Hotel also offers guests a glimpse into the Empty Quarter with expeditions from the comfort of fourstar accommodation.

Hatta, Dubai Located in the Hajar Mountains, the rugged Hatta landscape is brimming with opportunity for adventure, beginning with desert driving experiences. For those new to off-roading, the area around Fossil Rock provides a relatively easy introduction. More challenging terrain can be found further on around Big Red, a massive 300-foot dune that attracts the most adventurous drivers in mad dashes to the top. Hatta is also a favourite destination among hikers. Jebel Rawdah offers some less arduous walking trails with several routes that can be completed in around two hours while the Jebel Hatta mountain hike a bit further down the road is more challenging and can take 10 hours to complete. Nearing the Oman border are the Hatta pools – one of the UAE’s most popular road-trip destinations. Here, a canyon cradling miniature lakes of fresh water is surrounded by steep rocks on all sides. For those willing to clamber their way in, a beautiful oasis awaits that’s perfect for an idyllic day spent swimming and picnicking in the sun.

Al Ain, Abu Dhabi
Qasr Al Sarab
Known as the garden city thanks to the abundance of oases and date-palm plantations here, Al Ain has long been the agricultural heart of Abu Dhabi. More recently, the area has been recognised for its historic significance, with several locations identified as UNESCO World Heritage Sites in 2011. These include the ancient tombs around Hili, some of which date back 5,000 years and an example of the ancient falaj irrigation system that enabled early occupants to transport water from the higher planes to support villages in more remote areas. The tombs offer a fascinating insight into primitive life in this area with various relics from the period on display at the Al Ain National Museum, including pottery and funerary objects that hail from the Stone and Iron ages. More recent history of this area can be discovered at Al Jahili Fort which houses a permanent exhibition on the life of Wilfred Thesiger, the late British explorer who became known as Mubarak bin London and was famous for crossing the Empty Quarter twice in the 1940s. The fort itself is one of the largest in the UAE and once served as the royal summer residence. Towering over all this is the majestic Jebel Hafeet mountain – an unusual monolith that dominates the surrounding landscape and affords sweeping views of Al Ain from the summit.

Time to unwind Top-quality pampering in a fraction of the time
Spending a few days in Abu Dhabi is a great way to gain an overview of all this city has to offer but, inevitably, it will be an action-packed stay. Fun as short city breaks are, they can also be taxing on the body and mind so it’s important to take some time out to sit back and relax. The emirate’s luxurious spas are one of its top assets and a five-star pampering session should be part of any itinerary. It needen’t be a time-consuming treatment. Even if it’s just for 30 minutes, the body will feel the effects instantly and the soul will be forever grateful. As the trend for express beauty treatments grows on a global scale, spas across Abu Dhabi are adapting their menus and proving that quality pampering doesn’t have to be overly time-consuming. Concierge speaks to spa managers from some of the capital’s top wellness destinations about how they manage to make their clients feel rejuvenated within a matter of minutes.

With contemporary lifestyles in mind, Namm Spa at Dusit Thani Abu Dhabi has recently introduced 30- and 45-minute treatments across a range of categories, giving guests the option to specify the length of their treatment. In these cases, rather than cut out certain stages, the procedures are simply compacted so that guests still gain the full benefits but in a shorter space of time. Thanyathorn Khosinthanaphat, spa manager at Namm Spa, said: “Clients these days know 2
what they want and they want it quick. This is why we have created treatments that are perfect for people on a tight schedule. Our recently introduced 45-minute anti-stress massage was a big hit and brought to our attention a need for more packages like this.” This massage is particularly popular as it is proven to quickly and effectively release muscle tension in the back, neck and shoulders in just one short session. Additional condensed treatments are also scheduled for introduction in the coming months. Another option is for guests to combine their treatment selection in such a way that targets every part of the body in one session, eliminating the need to return to the spa several times. Khosinthanaphat adds: “Guests can mix and match treatments. For example, a 45-minute back massage with a 30-minute refreshing facial or a 30-minute relaxing facial plus a 30-minute head and shoulder massage can be selected.” So SPA at Sofitel Abu Dhabi Corniche takes a different approach, offering a restaurantstyle menu of mini-treatments under the labels Starters, Sides and Desserts. Starters include short treatments such as scrubs, ref lexology and mini-massages; Sides entail treatments such as face masks, Hope ear candles

and Indian head massages, while Desserts consist of manicures and milk baths. These options can be booked separately, combined or added as supplements to the Mains options. “Although these treatments are shorter in time, we do not compromise on quality,” assures Myriam Tesson, assistant spa manager at So SPA. Tesson adds that it is also possible to shorten many of the menu’s main treatments. For example, guests that don’t have time for a full manicure can book in for a 15-minute buffing session which leaves nails looking healthy and shiny. So SPA also enables clients to reserve spa time by the minute and then work with therapists to customise packages by combining options from the menu to match perfectly with requirements on the day; an ideal choice if clients don’t have time to study the menu in advance. A final option that female guests at Sofitel Abu Dhabi Corniche have is to book an in-room massage. Ideal if you’re short on time during the day, guests can reserve a slot for late evening, just before bedtime and reap

the benefits from the comfort and privacy of the suite. “Imagine receiving a deep relaxing massage at night when you feel sleepy. You can relax and go to bed almost immediately. That’s luxury!” says Tesson. Elsewhere, Eden Spa at Le Méridien Abu Dhabi offers a huge range of ready-made short treatments to target every area of the body, inspired by the needs of clients. Fanny Cataldo, spa and recreation manager at Eden Spa, says: “Many of our spa treatments were created based on customer demand and feedback and there’s a great demand for express treatments. With hectic, modern lifestyles people’s leisure is limited and they aren’t able to dedicate so much time to themselves. We can save a lot of time for our clients by optimising the process of our treatments.” A popular option geared specifically towards UAE visitors is the instant revival treatment – a 35-minute back and head massage that alleviates the stress placed on the body by travelling. Another therapy of the same length is the Sundari Jivana Body Polish, a nourishing therapy with glowing after-effects for both the body and mind. The is partly thanks to the hydrating Roseship seed oil, firming Gotu Kola and stress-relieving cardamom oil used throughout. One particularly time-effective

treatment for the body is the 35-minute sea essential satin treatment, a combination package featuring both a cleansing marine scrub and a moisturising massage. It’s not only hotel spas that have jumped on the trend. Spas in malls and even airports are offering express treatments to suit the requirements of busy clients and travellers in need of a hasty pick-me-up. “Everybody is on a tight schedule but we still need to care for and spoil ourselves from time to time,” adds Cataldo.
“Clients these days know what they want and they want it quick. This is why we have created treatments that are perfect for people on a tight schedule”

Crown and glory A number of luxury brands available in Abu Dhabi have time-honoured links with imperial families. Concierge explores the relationship between royals across the globe and their bespoke jewellers
From the heavy gold headdresses worn by the pharaohs in Ancient Egypt to diamond-studded tiaras displayed by modern-day princesses, jewellery has long been synonymous with the wealth and power of the world’s ruling families. Passed down from generation to generation, many of the jewels in royal collections are priceless heirlooms, some of which have been present at key historical events, including royal coronations and weddings across the centuries. In addition to their political significance, these regal ornaments also offer valuable insights into the private lives of royal families, particularly those pieces that were exchanged between lovers. Often commissioned in secret, the stories of these love tokens are, for the most part, lost or forgotten but in some instances they endure in the memories of the brands that created them. Other royals celebrated their love in the public arena, making extravagant gifts of jewellery and spending lavishly on their favourite gem-encrusted creations. Some of the most expensive jewellery pieces ever made have been owned by, or specially designed for, royal families. One particularly renowned collector of fine jewellery was Wallis, the late Duchess of Windsor, also known as Wallis Simpson. During her relationship with King Edward VIII, the sovereign ruler showered her with luxurious gifts. Cartier was a firm favourite both of the power couple and of Edward VIII’s father, King Edward VII, who described the brand as “jeweller of kings, king of jewellers”. As such, Simpson owned a number of pieces from Cartier including a panther bracelet adorned with precious gems, a pug’s head brooch that Cartier designed specially because of her love for dogs and a flamingo brooch featuring 102 diamonds and 42 rubies, sapphires and emeralds that the Duchess dismantled from other pieces of her jewellery to complete.

Besides the Duke and Duchess of Windsor, Cartier boasts a wealth of noble followers that have included the likes of Princess Grace of Monaco, Princess Marie Bonaparte and Adele Capell, Countess of Essex, all of whom possessed extravagant Cartier tiaras – headpieces synonymous with royalty and for which the brand became famous in the early 20th century. More recently, in 2011 during her wedding to the UK’s Prince William, Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge, wore a Cartier Halo tiara that was made in 1936 and lent to her by Queen Elizabeth II. Another great investor in jewellery was Grace Kelly, Princess of Monaco and the wife of Prince Rainier III. The former Hollywood star’s jewellery box was laden with precious jewels from her favourite jewellery houses: Cartier and Van Cleef & Arpels. Kelly was a particular fan of animal brooches and owned a large number of gem-encrusted clips from both brands in the shapes of a butterfly, a hedgehog, a hen, a poodle, a bird and a lion. In 1956, Van Cleef & Arpels was named Official Supplier to the Principality of Monaco, cementing the love affair between the French company and the Princess. Some of the most valuable

Van Cleef & Arpels pieces owned by Kelly are the 77.34-carat tiara she wore to her daughter Caroline’s wedding to Philippe Jugnot in 1978 and her 1955 engagement set of a three-strand pearl necklace, bracelet, earrings and ring. The brand’s relationship with the sovereignty of Monaco is still strong to this day. In 2011, Van Cleef & Arpels crafted the worldfamous Océan necklace for Charlene, the Princess of Monaco, commissioned by Prince

Albert II. The unique piece was created as a token of love and features a breathtaking combination of over 1,200 diamonds set in a way that resembles the waves on the sea. The necklace can also be transformed into a tiara and in this way responds to a modern trend gathering pace among luxury jewellers that recognises a need for highly priced items to be versatile. Van Cleef & Arpels has also infiltrated the jewellery boxes of Queen Marie Jose of Italy and Fawzia Fuad of Egypt, both of whom owned the brand’s necklaces and tiaras. Yet, it is the UK’s Windsor family that boasts one of the world’s most famous jewellery collections. There are actually two distinct sets of jewels owned by the British royal family. The Crown Jewels is the renowned collection of regal sceptres, sword handles and other instruments used in stately

ceremonies. These priceless pieces, among which nestles the largest diamond in the world, may not be removed from the UK. There is also the Queen’s Jewels, a collection that contains pieces from across the globe, commissioned for, or gifted to, members of the reigning royal family since the accession of King Charles II in the 1600s. Among these are some beautiful trinkets by Boucheron. Queen Mary, Queen Elizabeth’s grandmother, encountered the luxury jeweller when she received a tiara crafted by the brand from the South African government. She went on to commission a number of Boucheron pieces and, in time, the company became the official supplier of the court. One famous Boucheron item from the Queen’s Jewels is a striking tiara, given to Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother, in 1942 by Lady Margaret Greville – a wealthy socialite and one of Boucheron’s most important customers – along with a

As well as creating jewellery for real-life monarchs, luxury brands will also collaborate with filmmakers to add the sheen of authenticity by creating pieces for actors cast as royals in big-budget productions. For the filming of Diana, which featured Naomi Watts as the late Princess, Swiss-based luxury watch and jewellery company Chopard produced imitations of the Princess of Wales’ personal collection, including tiaras, diamond necklaces, ruby bracelets and her 10-carat sapphire engagement ring. Cartier did the same for the upcoming Grace of Monaco movie, which was released in May, recreating exact replicas of five vintage Cartier pieces worn by Grace Kelly, played by Nicole Kidman in the film.
stunning ruby and diamond necklace featuring flower clusters. The tiara continues to be used for special events to this day by Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall. Outside the UK, Boucheron’s high-profile clientele spanned a wealth of monarchies and their rulers, among them the Maharajah of Patiala who presented his many wives and concubines with precious jewels, King Farouk of Egypt who showered his Queen Farida with diamond designs and the Shah of Iran, Mohammad Reza Pahlavi. In addition, the French jewellery house has long enjoyed a special relationship with Russia. In fact, Moscow was the chosen destination of Boucheron’s first boutique outside of France in 1897. Russian royals were known for their particularly opulent tastes and over several decades the brand created tailored tiaras, coronets, necklaces,
rings and luxury accessories such as pins and cuff links for generations of Tsars, Tsarinas, Grand Dukes, Grand Duchesses and Princesses. Catering to the demands of these wealthy families and furnishing the royal jewellery boxes with commissions, often unconstrained by the limitations of budget, has helped to elevate the status of now-renowned names such as Boucheron, Cartier and Van Cleef & Arpels, not to mention filled their archives with exquisite creations that are the envy of many newer jewellery houses. More recently, these brands have turned back to their historic pieces to produce modern designs inspired by the successes of the past. As a result, today’s shoppers can possess the kind of jewellery worn by royalty in contemporary collections by some of the world’s most enduring brands.

Power print Concierge explores the enduring allure of luxury fashion house Pucci, a name that has long been synonymous with luxury and glamour WORDS BY
CAROLINE SCOTT
Colours, patterns and silhouettes go in and out of style, which means there’s always an era – or perhaps even a whole decade – when a brand or designer just doesn’t feel right for the times. The history of fashion is littered with luxury labels that were so ‘of the moment’ that when they fell from favour there was no way back. Pucci, despite being very much aligned with the ’60s and ’70s, has somehow sailed through the decades remarkably unscathed. Emilio Pucci, who was from an influential Florentine family, established his eponymous brand in 1947 and opened his first boutique on the island of Capri. His colourful and easy-to-wear clothes filled a gap in the market and Pucci quickly became the go-to brand of the jet set. Although his daughter, Laudomia Pucci now declares the jet set over, the Pucci print still speaks of languid days by azure seas and a rarefied life spent in the world’s most glamorous hot spots.

A clue to Pucci’s enduring appeal can, perhaps, be found in the job title that Laudomia uses to describe her role – the image director. “What I try to do is make sure there is a coherent message for the brand in the medium to long term,” she told Concierge on a recent trip to Dubai where she was presenting Pucci’s spring/summer collection to clients and VIPs. “I have had many careers within the company. I ran both it and the design team for about 10 years and then I moved from being the owner and designer to a top managerial role.” Laudomia took up the reigns on Emilio’s death in 1992 and in 2000 LVMH acquired a controlling share of the business. She remains a partial owner and still “very emotionally attached”. It’s impossible that she wouldn’t be, as the business is still headquartered at the Pucci Palazzo in Florence where she grew up and lives to this day with her own family. Not surprisingly, hers was no ordinary childhood. Before the Italian ready-to-wear shows began each season, her father would host

fashion shows in the family ballroom. His exotic clientele, which included the likes of Sophia Loren, would often drop by. “I’m like a walking archive,” says Laudomia. “When clients or designers ask me questions about Pucci, I always have the answer. When our current creative director Peter Dundas asks ‘do you think this is Pucci enough’, or ‘why is this not Pucci?’ I don’t even have to think about it, I just know.” Laudomia is no longer involved in the “day-to-day nitty gritty” of the business and says her role is to make sure the company is “not only telling a story, but making sure the story-telling continues.”
The tale began when a ski suit that Emilio Pucci had designed was photographed by Harper’s Bazaar and from there he built a clothing line. His pieces were famously worn by Jacqueline Onassis and Marilyn Monroe; the latter was even buried in Pucci. The brand is now worn by today’s ‘it’ girls with Poppy Delevingne, Jennifer Lawrence and Alexa Chung among the many celebrities regularly seen sporting the latest Pucci designs. Does Laudomia believe today’s stars can compete with the style icons of the past? “Six months ago I saw Grace Kelly – who was a friend of my father’s – on the cover of a magazine and I said to my husband: ‘Can you imagine seeing

your grandmother like this?’ What it means is that we haven’t been able to replace these icons and we haven’t been able to replace that lifestyle, their personalities, style and that beautiful dream. They were larger than life. There is a period of history that belongs to those women. Today, the individual is maybe less important.” That said, Laudomia is all too aware that the success of the brand lies in its future, not the past. “We need to learn from younger people and other countries – not just look back at ourselves, but look ahead. That is a challenge for all of us.” Referencing the fact that Marilyn Monroe doesn’t have much resonance for young Chinese women, she says: “You have to be sure that your values

are relevant to today’s girls and that’s why I spend a lot of time talking to young people. My children are helping with this, because our way of life is not the same as theirs.” The ‘way of life’ she refers to is that of jetsetting women who were the earliest proponents of Pucci. “The jet set was a small group of privileged people, successful men with beautiful wives who would travel from America to between two or three places in the summer and in the winter; New York, London, Paris and possibly Rome. For one reason or another, they would all know each other – this is what my mother tells me – but today we are discovering people all around the planet that we have things in common with. This group no longer exists as women have changed. They have taken their lives into their own hands and they don’t have time for all of this now. The world’s got smaller, but we [as a brand] are now talking to people in Russia, Japan, South America and Dubai. Private jets are all over the place and no one stays in the same place more than a few days!” Accessibility, visibility and relevancy are all of paramount importance to Pucci’s Norwegian designer Peter Dundas. “For me, moving the print on was a challenge, but my main aim was to move to other areas of a woman’s wardrobe,” he told Vogue recently. “I saw Pucci as a jet-set label, but when I arrived, I really wanted to work on the red-carpet pieces.” For spring/summer, he focused on what he describes as a new category of “sporty deluxe”. The collection is as appealing to Middle Eastern fashionistas as it is to New York socialites and, while some of Paris and Milan’s grand old fashion houses may have
been slow at allowing people ‘in’ (holding on to a sense of exclusivity for dear life), the Pucci family has always mixed public and private. “My house has always been the office and now I’ve taken the archives to my country house,” says Laudomia. “Yes, I am embracing the outside world,” she adds. As to whether her own children will work within the family business, she’s not sure. “My eldest daughter is an artist in her own right. She’s been with Dior for the last few summers and she’s graduating now. We’ll see. It’s a question of talent. If they want to, they have the opportunity, but if they don’t have the talent, then no!” 9

Brunch
1
An important feature of Abu Dhabi social life is the weekly brunch that takes place every Friday in restaurants across town. For some, this is an occasional treat to celebrate birthdays and special events while others view it as the perfect way to kick off a great weekend out in the city. Either way, a Friday brunch is a must for visitors looking to tap into the city’s social scene and experience the extraordinary range of cuisines on offer here. The weekly feast at Urban Kitchen in Dusit Thani Abu Dhabi (02 6988888) features a pile of fresh seafood on ice and a sushi bar alongside a series of live cooking stations dishing up delectable cuisine with an Asian twist. a themed approach offers a different spin with the chocolate brunch at Al Raha Beach Hotel (02 5080555) where delicious sweet treats (in addition to savoury dishes) awaits and the ever-popular Bubbalicious brunch at The Westin Abu Dhabi Golf Resort and Spa (02 6169999) where the bubbly flows freely and those that want to watch the calories can pile a plate high with healthy delights at the superfood station. More recently, Rosewood Abu Dhabi (02 8135550) has launched its brunch – a tantalising feast of artisan cuisine, including a pasta station where chefs whip up the most delicious sauces in minutes and a fantasy dessert room
featuring all manner of goodies that have to be seen to be believed. Over at Le Royal Méridien Abu Dhabi (02 6742020) diners can treat themselves to the new Fizz Factory Royale Brunch. Start off with some fresh sashimi, nigiri and maki at the Japanese sushi counter, before sampling salads and appetisers from the chilled section and heading outside to order barbecued meats cooked to preference. Meanwhile, every Friday sees diners at 18° in Hyatt Capital Gate Abu Dhabi (02 5961234) embark on a culinary voyage around the Mediterranean with platters of cheeses, meats and fish inspired by the culinary traditions of Greece, Italy, Turkey, Lebanon and beyond.

The end of June marks the beginning of Ramadan, the Islamic holy month. During this time Muslims fast throughout daylight hours, avoiding all food and beverages. Every evening, when the sun has set, a gong sounds announcing the start of iftar – the meal at which the fast is broken. In hotels across the capital, giant iftar feasts are prepared daily, offering visitors a prime opportunity to experience local culture and cuisine. After consuming nothing all day, it’s unwise to eat too much at once so many Muslims will take a little at iftar, then eat more at a later meal known as suhoor. Some hotels, including Shangri-La Hotel Qaryat Al Beri (02 5098888) and Emirates Palace (02 6909000), erect huge tents to accommodate these feasts while others transform restaurants into Arabian dining halls.

Bespoke blends Luxury leaves are all the rage in the UAE, where tea drinkers expect the best. Concierge explores some of the different traditions surrounding this historic drink and asks the experts what it takes to make a quality cuppa
In his best-selling book A History of the World in 6 Glasses, Tom Standage takes up the story of tea, examining the beverage from its origins in China, many centuries ago through its years in the limelight as one of the great axles of the British Empire. It is a turbulent tale of exploration and discovery, war and conquest and the decline of ancient cultures in the face of modern innovation. He leaves it towards the end of the 19th century, having redefined relations between global powers and set the stage for a new era in international politics. Today, though still an important commodity in trade, tea’s influence in diplomatic affairs has declined somewhat. The glory days of what Standage describes as “imperialism, industrialisation and world domination” are left behind and tea is now enjoyed across the planet, by different cultures in varying forms. In China, where it has historically been seen as a means of spiritual and bodily refreshment, the preference is to drink it neat, with a few Jasmine leaves thrown in to subtly enhance the flavour. In Japan, where the tradition of tea drinking dates back almost as far, elaborate ceremonies evolved, enshrining every aspect of the process, from preparation to pouring, in ritual.

Only in the 16th century did the Europeans, reaching China for the first time and encountering the exotic beverage, begin shipping tea home in small quantities. First to import it were the Dutch, who placed particular emphasis on its medicinal qualities. Next, tea appeared in France where it enjoyed a brief spell in the salons of French aristocrats before it was replaced by another new drink making its European debut – coffee. It wasn’t until it made its way across the channel to England around the beginning of the 18th century that tea established a solid presence on the continent. In time, a whole culture evolved around the drinking of tea in England and the British developed their own signature style of taking
the beverage, softening the flavour with milk and sweetening bitter leaves with sugar. Today, the consumption of tea is global and the longestablished tea rituals of China, Japan and later Britain have been supplemented by new and ever more inventive ways to take the drink. Sweet, fruit-blended brews, potent blends enhanced by spices, delicate floral bouquets and refreshing iced teas with peach or lemon – the list of options open to the modern tea drinker is endless. In the UAE, a growing trend towards exotic luxury tea has seen a steady increase in highend boutiques and five-star hotels stocking a wide range of quality blends. Ting Chuang works as a professional tea sommelier at The St. Regis Abu Dhabi, advising guests on

bespoke blends and introducing less experienced drinkers to the many different varieties on offer. “Tea has been alive in Arabic culture for centuries but the sheer diversity of blends available here now has emerged in the last few decades with the introduction of different tea cultures from around the world,” she says. With a multinational resident society, enhanced by the large number of visitors coming in and out of the UAE on a daily basis, it’s inevitable that a mix of traditions and techniques has come to characterise the local tea culture, says Mathieu Delin, tea sommelier at TWG. The luxury brand set up shop in the region in 2012 and is due to open up in Abu Dhabi before the end of the year. “The UAE is a big tea-drinking country and the diverse population here makes it an ideal environment for TWG, which has the largest selection of teas in the world,” he explains, citing some 800 different types in the company’s portfolio. One of these, Gold Yin Zhen, is sourced from a single hill in China and harvested just once a year, producing around 10 to 15 kilograms in total. The tea retails at AED63,000 per kilogram while another variety, the Imperial Gyokuro goes for AED57,780 per kilogram. In many markets demand for these rare blends is limited but in the UAE the company has already sold several servings of both. As

Delin says: “People here are accustomed to quality and expect nothing less than the best. The majority of our customers here are locals who love their tea and would rather pay more for a top-quality blend that meets their high expectations. TWG achieves this by careful selection of ingredients. “We have the finest tea gardens in the world and every ingredient in our blends, from the roses grown in Grasse, Provence, to the bergamont we source in Sicily and the Indian alphonso mango, is the best available,” Delin adds, explaining that the company places all its emphasis on the flavour and aroma of a tea rather than any medicinal or health-boosting qualities associated with it. “That’s not to say tea can’t be healing. There are proven health benefits to certain varieties, but our approach is about the experience.” However, a good cup of tea relies on more than the quality of ingredients, however. Tiffany Kate, assistant venue manager of The

Lounge and Lemon and Lime at The Westin Abu Dhabi Golf Resort and Spa, identifies two key elements essential to produce a first-rate brew. “Fullness of body is vital to a decent cup of tea. It should have a strong taste that spreads throughout the mouth, giving a sense of a broad and expansive flavour.” Equally important are the freshness and colour of the leaves, which indicates not just the type of tea but also how it has been harvested and handled, she continues. “It’s easy to identify quality tea that has been properly picked and processed but incorrectly stored while awaiting shipment. The tea will be over oxidised and smell stale while a well-matured tea should smell sweet and slightly fruity.”
Great care must also be taken at the preparation and serving stages. “We never boil tea as this can cause the leaves to burn slightly. We just warm it to between 90 and 93 degrees,” explains Delin. Every one of the teas at TWG has its own particular infusion time. “This can range from 30 seconds for a strong tea like an African black variety right up to 15 minutes for a white tea.” The company also advises against adding sugar, milk or lemon but does provide special crystal sugar that doesn’t affect the flavour. Ultimately, however, a good cup of tea is subjective, Delin acknowledges, adding that this is why TWG has such a huge selection of single state and blended teas. This is the philosophy that Chuang keeps in mind when she makes up individual blends for each guest. “A clear understanding of each person’s tastes and preferences is a must as this allows me to combine my knowledge of tea with their particular requirements. I also pay attention to their mood and how the ingredients in each infusion will affect or complement their state of mind to create a positive and enjoyable experience.”

Sheikh Zayed Palace Museum Built in 1937, the palace of the late Sheikh Zayed was converted to a museum and opened in 2001. For centuries, traditional wooden boats known as dhows were relied upon to keep the UAE's bustling trading ports and markets afloat. Nowadays, waterways such as Dubai Creek and Abu Dhabi's Mina Zayed Port are key points to spot the remaining ships still in use gliding majestically on the water. Such spots are great reminders of days gone and of the deep-rooted traditions that reaffirm the country's long-lasting connection to the sea.

WINING AND DINING
As a general rule, all hotels will add a 10 percent charge to restaurant bills in addition to the six percent fee levied by the government. Most menus state whether these taxes have already been incorporated or not but check with the waiter if it is unclear.
Although the UAE is a Muslim country, alcohol is permitted in several emirates including Abu Dhabi and Dubai. Wine, Champagne and spirits are available in most five-star hotels, but be warned, there is zero tolerance to drink-driving and being drunk in public is a crime, both punishable with a fine and, in more serious cases, imprisonment.

EMIRATES PALACE The iconic palace stands in pride of place at the tip of the Abu Dhabi Corniche and embodies the luxury lifestyle the capital has cultivated. Until recently the most expensive hotel ever to be built, the impressive structure is richly adorned with precious materials. 12 different shades of marble can be spotted in the cavernous atrium, while the central dome holds dual records as both the largest in the world and the greatest gilded expanse ever created in one building.

SHEIKH ZAYED GRAND MOSQUE Built by the late Sheikh Zayed to help build a bridge between faiths and create greater cross-cultural understanding, the Grand Mosque is a must-see for any visitor to Abu Dhabi. The third-largest mosque in the world, this majestic structure is wrought from over 1,000 columns and 82 domes embellished with semi-precious stones, gold and marble. My life in Abu Dhabi UAE freestyle jet ski champion Khalid Salem Al Qubaisi shares his city highlights
}
1
1 Khalid Salem Al Qubaisi 2 Mezlai, Emirates Palace
I was born and raised in Abu Dhabi and am a UAE national citizen. For me, this city is best described as a sunshine capital with a seaside view. I love sports and the sea and this combination has led to my career as a professional jet ski champion. When I’m not practising, I work for the International Petroleum Investment Company (IPIC). I grew up with my family, who passed on their love of the ocean to me. During trips out to sea when I was young we took part in a lot of different aquatic activities, including diving, fishing and jet skiing, all of which contributed to my passion for water sports and my love of the sea. Over the years I have spent a lot of time developing my jet ski skills to reach competition level. Abu Dhabi has a thriving visitor market and a lot of people come here to enjoy the outdoor lifestyle. Water-based activities are popular
and readily available at beaches, sports clubs and hotels around the city. Visitors can also attend some of the water-based competitions held here throughout the year, which range from power boat and sailing races to wake boarding and jet-ski events. When I’m not out enjoying myself on the water I like to take advantage of the many different attractions to be found in Abu Dhabi. If I’m available in the evening time I might arrange to meet with some friends for dinner at one of our favourite restaurants. These include some of the coastal destinations in and around Yas Island, Saadiyat Island and Al Reem Island; venues with stunning settings and great sea views like Le Deck at Monte-Carlo Beach Club, Saadiyat or Beach House at Park Hyatt Abu Dhabi Hotel & Villas.
